SHOP FISHERS SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES OLD & NEW AT THE POPULAR SUMMER SERIES EVENT
10 / JULY 2022 / TownePost.com
“IT’S A FUN WAY FOR THE COMMUNITY TO LEARN ABOUT AND SUPPORT LOCALLY OWNED BUSINESSES LIKE RESTAURANTS, SERVICE PROVIDERS AND SHOPS, ALL IN THE SAME WEEK.” — ANGELA CASTELLI
Writer / Renee Larr Photographer / Amy Payne
The Shop Fishers: Summer Series event started two years ago in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the shutdowns of local businesses. City leaders created the event to boost the local economy and support small businesses in Fishers. The citywide celebration is back July 16 through 23, and offers shoppers discounts and promotions at their favorite local boutiques, restaurants, gyms, spas and online retailers. “The last few years have been especially tough on local businesses,” says Kara Hall, marketing and public relations manager for the City of Fishers. “Entrepreneurship is a huge, community-wide focus. This initiative really rallies behind our local entrepreneurs and directly affects the local economy.”
Sales in July are typically slower for local businesses, as many families are traveling for one last summer getaway before returning to school in August. Hall says the event is meant as a last blast for summer. Shoppers can take advantage of back-to-school deals and dining on patios before the fall weather arrives. Since its inception, boys boutique Roman & Leo has participated in the event. Owner Angela Castelli says she participates year after year because she feels fortunate to have her small business in a community that promotes entrepreneurship and innovation. She says she’s in a group of boutique owners across the country, and many do not feel the same level of support from their community that she receives from Fishers.
“We love participating in Shop Fishers each year because as a proud 14-year resident of Fishers, we love our community Last year more than 70 homegrown retailers and couldn’t imagine raising our family participated, highlighting Fishers’ diverse or building our business anywhere else,” retail sector. This year city leaders hope to Castelli says. “It’s also a fun way for the increase the number of businesses joining community to learn about and support the event. The companies are spread out locally owned businesses like restaurants, through the growing areas of Fishers service providers and shops, all in the same including Saxony, the Nickel Plate District week. the shutdowns of 2020. “I had to close down my storefront in 2020, and am now focused on my catering and participating in the Fishers Farmers Market each Saturday,” Dinkel says. “I am at the market each Saturday selling traditional Filipino lumpia and pancit. I’m really hoping participating in these types of events introduces more local Fishers residents to Filipino food.” Discounts and promotions vary by business. Some offer a free gift with a purchase, a percentage off your total, and even special events throughout the week. Hall says it’s a diverse way to shop locally and save money. She says a ton of new businesses have opened in the last few years, and this event is a great way to support your tried-and-true favorites while also finding new businesses to love. “At the end of this event each year, we survey to see what worked, and make changes for the following year,” Hall says. “Last year we
heard that one of our local businesses had record-high sales during this initiative.” Residents are encouraged to follow the City of Fishers on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for deals and giveaways during the week. “Many of our participating businesses will donate items for us to give away, and those are always popular with our shoppers,” Hall says. “It’s a great way to increase their exposure within the community.” Shopping local offers residents a personal touch from smaller businesses, as opposed to large corporations. The items sold are often unique and exclusive to that small business. It also reduces environmental impact by reducing travel. Lastly, it ensures the money spent at local businesses stays in the local community. For a complete list of participants, go to thisisfishers.com/shop-fishers.

eing from Pennsylvania, Tiffany Schlueter was no stranger to the homemade ice cream Bruster’s sold. When the opportunity arose for her and her husband, Ben Schlueter, to open up a shop in Fishers, they jumped at the chance. “I grew up in Pittsburgh and Bruster’s was the ice cream shop I went to, and I thought it was just a Pittsburg thing,” she says. The idea to open a store in Fishers started back in 2020 when the couple decided they wanted to give back to the community by opening a franchise. They did some research on top franchises to open and work for. That’s when they found Bruster’s. “We were always wondering how to get more involved in the community and this was our way to do that,” says Ben, a co-owner. The couple has called Fishers home since 2004, and fell in love with the community that surrounds it. With determination and support from Bruster’s, they were able to open their location on Olio Road in early March of 2022. They both say Olio Road was the place they wanted to be, due to the fact that not only are they just down the road, but the shop also gives the east side of Fishers a new ice cream place to enjoy. “This way it’ll be right there for the kids, for us, and all of our

“We’re in here doing everything right now, opening the store, making the ice cream, scooping ice cream, closing things down and getting our books run,” Ben says. Scooping and creating ice cream isn’t the only factor that goes into the process of opening an ice cream shop. “Right now the big process is not only keeping the store running and building a client base, but also training our employees,” Ben says. As of right now, Bruster’s employee base is mainly Hamilton Southeastern High School students. However, Bruster’s uses this opportunity to help give first-time employees good experience for future jobs. “It really gives us a blank piece of paper to write our story, and hopefully we’re teaching them good habits about how to run a business, how to be a good entrepreneur and how to be a good steward in the community,” Ben says.

but also that customers receive the service they deserve. Ever since they opened, Tiffany and Ben have been working with their staff to make sure all customers are greeted with a smile and given the best service possible for whatever they may be celebrating. “People are coming here to celebrate stuff - they’re coming here to celebrate a good report card, a baseball win, or whatever else they have going on, and we want to be able to give them that treat that they’re hoping for,” Ben says. Reviews have been coming in for Bruster’s, most of them positive. “We wanted to be involved in the community,” Ben says. “The support around us has just been amazing.”
The Schlueters are excited for their journey as franchise owners. They both feel as though the reviews have been in support of the new shop, and are happy that Bruster’s has come to Fishers. “It’s like we’ve filled in something that was missing,” Tiffany Ben believes in creating a fun atmosphere says. “I feel that I’ve been talking up the ice for the workers that will then result in cream for so long that I started thinking, better customer service overall for the ’What if my friends come try this and they establishment. “We want our workers to don’t like it?’ But every single person liked love what they’re doing and to be passionate it. CONNECT Dr. Maria Summers with Dr. Matt Vogt
Dr. Matthew Vogt had one goal when he opened his dental practice in McCordsville in 2018 — to provide exceptional dental care and an extraordinary patient experience. In naming his office, The Dentists at Gateway Crossing, Dr. Vogt always knew there would be more than one dental provider. Dr. Vogt is bringing on fellow Indiana University School of Dentistry colleague Dr. Maria Summers as a second dentist at the practice in July. “The goal was always to create a place in this community where patients can go for all facets of dental care,” Dr. Vogt says. “It became clear at the end of 2021 that this was no longer a one-dentist job. Dr. Summers and I have known each other since our time in dental school and having multiple doctors here will be great from a patient care perspective.” One reason is that each dentist brings a particular skill set or specialty interest to the table. Dr. Vogt is especially interested in dental implant surgery and full-mouth smile reconstruction, while Dr. Summers enjoys restorative treatment and root canal therapy. Both doctors continue to be focused on general family dentistry as well. Dr. Summers brings an additional service to the table. She was born in Venezuela and is fluent in Spanish. The practice is located near Lawrence, where the Hispanic population is a large part of the community. “Spanish is my first language,” Dr. Summers says. “I think this appeals to Spanishspeaking patients because it’s more comfortable and easier to understand what is going on in your language of origin. It helps to build trust.” TownePost.com / JULY 2022 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 25
Dr. Vogt says his team has grown quickly from a team of two to a team of 11 in the last four years. He says they’ve become a valued community member by treating patients like family when they arrive for dental care. “I think one of the main reasons we’ve grown so much is because, as a team, we provide exceptional patient care but treat everyone that comes through the door with respect,” Dr. Vogt says. “No matter their background or where they are in life, we’re here to help. We’re here to offer advice and care in a very straightforward, down-toearth way.” Dr. Summers says she enjoys educating patients on their dental health as well. By combining forces they can provide a complete patient care experience in one place. They both participate in continuing education and utilize the latest technology to stay on top of cutting-edge procedures. Dr. Vogt is looking forward to Dr. Summers starting and believes he has found the perfect addition to the practice. “Our team couldn’t be more excited,” he says. “One of the most rewarding things you can do in dentistry is give someone their smile back. Comprehensive, full-mouth care has become a big part of our practice, but we’re still just as focused on general dentistry and the things that have brought us so many wonderful patients over the past four years. Collaborating with Dr. Summers will benefit our patients immensely and allow us to continue to provide the level of service we believe in.” The Dentists at Gateway Crossing is located at 6621 W. Broadway STE 600 in McCordsville. For more information, visit thedentistsatgc.com or give them a call at 317-643-9434.

Jack Keefer fell in love with basketball at a young age. He played in high school at Oak Hill, a small school just outside of Marion. The team was successful and Keefer loved his coach Phil McCarter, who Keefer says treated him like a son. It was McCarter who convinced him to go to college. “I think my hero, which is my high school coach, got me in there, got me to go to college,” Keefer says. “I probably wouldn’t have gone to college if it hadn’t been for him.” Keefer enrolled at Ball State University where he played basketball during his freshman year. He was too small to play the forward position, so he decided to run track instead. He double majored in accounting
and education. He could’ve chosen either path coming out of college, but he went into coaching. Keefer coached four years at his alma mater Oak Hill before becoming Lawrence North’s first-ever head basketball coach in 1976. He never thought he’d still be coaching basketball a half-century later. At one point, Keefer accepted an assistant principal position at Oak Hill. Two days later he informed the board he wanted to coach instead. He’s never looked back. In 46 seasons at Lawrence North, Keefer went 804-312, with an overall record of 865-338. Forty-six years is a long time. Time has always been important to Keefer. He says the key to sustained success is the willingness by all parties involved to put the 28 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JULY 2022 / TownePost.com
necessary time in. “It takes a lot of time just like the kids have to put the time in, the coach has to put the time in,” he says. “I feel like the coach can’t put his time in unless

he’s got a family that agrees to that.” Keefer says his family has always supported him. One of the ways Keefer got his players to buy in was to make them feel like family. He and his wife would host meals for the team at their home throughout the season. His wife enjoyed getting to know the players. Only one other coach in Indiana history has won more games than Keefer, but to Keefer, winning was never the point. “It’s not wins and losses,” he says. “Those come and go. You win a few, you lose a few. We won our few here because we’ve had great players. You can’t dwell on any one of those wins. So you just keep going. Again, it’s the journey. It’s not the win. I suppose if you didn’t win your share, the journey would get very boring.” His teams did a lot of winning. With Keefer in charge, Lawrence North won four state championships in 1989, 2004, 2005 and 2006. They reached the finals in 2021. In addition to the championships, Keefer’s teams won seven regional titles, 19 sectional championships, and won the Marion County championship 10 times. From 2005 to 2007, Lawrence North, featuring future NBA players Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr., won 50 consecutive games.

Out of 865 wins, Keefer cherishes one above the rest. “Oh, that first championship,” Keefer says. Prior to establishing class basketball in 1997, all Indiana high school basketball teams competed in a single tournament to determine the state champion. In 1989, Lawrence North won it all. “I’m sure that the modern kid has no idea what basketball was before,” Keefer says. “Class basketball has some positive things, that’s for sure, but in the old days one team won a state.” Keefer remembers two rows of newspaper and radio reporters covering the game. When it was over, they asked him and his team questions. “It’s just quite a celebration,” he says. “Basketball was something different back in those days.”

Lawrence North, the school he’s worked at since he was a young man, holds a special place in Keefer’s heart. He heaps praise on everyone, from the athletes to the students who packed the gym for games and shook the bleachers, to the principals, superintendents and teachers. They’re all part of what makes Keefer proud to have worked at Lawrence North for 46 years. “When people come here, I always tell them we’re not a normal school,” he says. “All schools are different. I think there’s some great schools and I think there’s probably some bad schools. This is one of the great ones.” At 78 years old, Keefer still has the urge to coach, but he knows it’s time to retire. “I’ve got to do it,” he says. “I just can’t keep going on. My poor wife’s been going to games for 46 years on Friday and Saturday night.” In his retirement, Keefer says he plans to spend more time at his cabin in Brown County. He and his wife are planning biking trips to New Orleans and across the south of France. Where one journey ends, another begins. 30 / GEIST MAGAZINE / JULY 2022 / TownePost.com
