farm is located off a gravel lane on East 86th Street. There you’ll find a fridge stocked daily with fresh eggs, and seasonal produce fresh-picked from the farm and available for purchase on an honor system.
For Nick, it is important that Mud Creek Farm helps to maintain local food supplies and provide an opportunity to learn about local food. For most of us, local food means heading to the local grocery where produce is shipped from faraway places inside and outside the U.S. Nick’s idea of local is collecting the eggs his hens laid that morning and offering them for sale that day.
What are the challenges in establishing a new farm? A big one, Nick says, is learning to outwit the wild animals who like fresh produce as much as humans do. He learned that raccoons know when to pick sweet corn at peak ripeness. They once wiped out the farm’s first batch one season the night before Nick was planning to harvest. Now Nick installs a temporary strand of electric wire 6” and 18” off the ground to protect the corn that’s ready to be picked. Raccoons can climb but they can’t jump, and the simple
Why is local food so important? The pandemic has given us one reason. With supply chains disrupted, some grocery store shelves started to look bare. Things we assumed would be readily available, like beans, flower and yeast, were suddenly in short supply, and some items had to be rationed. The inclination to buy in quantity and stock up was strong and understandable. Even the Mud Creek Farm owners experienced panic buying early in the pandemic. Nick would stock his farm

Mud Creek Farm began taking shape in 2018 when Nick Carter and his wife Kendra purchased 25 acres of land and a home there for their family between Sargent Road and Mud Creek, south of 86th Street in Indianapolis. Having grown up on a farm in rural Indiana, Nick understands the work and rewards in producing food. He wanted his children to learn those lessons and raise awareness about the benefits of local foods. The property provided the perfect location for both. Years later, Mud Creek Farm is now a thriving local food producer and community resource. The solar-powered
Overall, the challenges have been surmountable, and the farm has exceeded Nick’s expectations. He thought it might produce more food than the community would buy. He thought he’d have a surplus to sell through Market Wagon, the online farmers market that Nick co-founded to give consumers access to local food delivered to their doorsteps or a local pickup spot. There hasn’t been any surplus, and demand seems to be growing along with the farm.

stand with dozens of eggs, and within an hour they would all be gone. Nick finally posted a sign asking the panic buyers to stop. His hens would keep producing eggs. Plenty of eggs would be available each day. That’s one advantage of local foods. Local food doesn’t have to travel far, requiring fewer resources to transport and keep fresh. Mud Creek Farm takes this a giant step further. Food produced at the farm requires fewer resources to reach our tables, and the farm itself also helps to restore the environment. How? Mud Creek

Farm is a regenerative operation. As Nick explains, at the core of regenerative farming is the idea that soil should be alive with microbial and fungal activity. This allows the soil to harbor not only rocks and minerals, but also organic matter - chiefly carbon. (Your car emits carbon. Mud Creek Farm’s soil helps sequester it.) To keep soil alive, a farmer has to keep chemical use and tilling to a minimum, which Mud Creek Farm does. Nick still has to battle weeds. To control them and provide fertilizer, Mud Creek
Farm integrates small livestock, like goats and chickens, with the vegetable garden. Goats are the original weed eaters and they, along with the chickens, create natural fertilizer. As the Carters apply composted manure to the soil year after year, the soil is enriched, and each new layer suppresses more and more latent weed seeds in the soil, allowing for less and less tilling. In other words, the animals produce manure that feeds the soil, which harbors carbon, stops the weeds, and feeds the plants. This produces nutritious food that we can eat, along with the eggs the chickens lay each day. Mud Creek Farm is showing us how we can address some of the complex challenges of excess carbon in the atmosphere, and how to ensure safe, reliable food supplies. Thank you, Carter family, for being trailblazers and good neighbors. Mud Creek Farm is located at 9375 East 86th Street in Indianapolis. For more info, visit mudcreek.farm.

A FRESH TAKE ON MORNINGS MORNINGS BREAKFAST & BRUNCH OPENS IN FISHERS
Writer / Noah Alatza Photographer / Walker Photography
Mornings Breakfast & Brunch has expanded to Fishers. It’s their first northern Indianapolis location, and the new eatery officially opened in early June. The new restaurant is located on 116th Street near the I-69 interchange. When the owners started looking for their
next location to open, they felt Fishers made the most sense in terms of geography and the local economy. General Manager Marco Martinez says they had been contemplating opening a second location for some time, and the City of Fishers checked all of their boxes. “This is something that has been on our mind forever, and we had this opportunity 10 / AUGUST 2022 / TownePost.com
come up and we took it,” Martinez says. “We’re really looking forward to establishing ourselves at this new location.” Mornings focuses on a traditional American breakfast, but also incorporates a Latin American spin on the dishes. That spin is something Martinez says sets them apart from other local breakfast spots.
Martinez says they want to continue to grow Mornings across the Indianapolis metro area. As a family-run business, Martinez says the breakfast locations are unique because of the customer service and the familyfriendly atmosphere. He says they give back to the community as much as they can. “We support a lot of our community’s businesses by buying local,” Martinez says. “That’s everything from our meats to some of the smaller things that we can’t get from our big producers.” The Fishers location has already been a hit with locals and travelers alike. “So far there’s been great positive feedback and everyone is loving our food,” Martinez says. “We greatly appreciate the response from the public. It has truly been amazing.” Expansion of the popular spot is expected in the coming years according to Martinez. He says another location will likely be in the works on the south side of Indianapolis in the near future. For now, he says they are focused on continuing to build up their new Fishers spot. “The purpose at Mornings is not just to sell food, but to build a strong community and consume locally,” Martinez says. “We really take pride in being locally owned and operated, and providing the best experience for our customers.” Mornings Breakfast & Brunch is located at 8235 East 116th Street, Suite 245 in Fishers. them that were the same. In today’s day and age with everything being electronic, it’s nice to see that it’s really helping a lot in the city and in some places that kids might not necessarily have access to a library.”
Bill Reed, a retired math teacher, started maintaining the LFL outside of his house around three years ago, making sure to keep the library stocked and ready for those who came by. He says he knows how important reading can be in a kid’s life.
LFL locations are exactly what they sound like. Whether they are in front of a school or placed in a nearby neighborhood, they include a small collection of books that people can choose from, and either return or replace with a different book.
“I was talking to one mother whose daughter is only 2 years old, and she told me her daughter would scream to get a

“The LFL program is very simple - bring a book, take a book,” says Colleen Sommer, an LFL steward in east Carmel. “Unfortunately the book demand outweighs book donations, and many LFLs go empty for days or sometimes weeks if someone is not checking up on them regularly.”

Thankfully, that is where the steward program comes in.
“A steward is the person that takes care of the Little Free Library,” Reed says. “The steward is really the one that makes sure that there are no inappropriate books, or making sure there’s no trash or things like that in the library.” Clifford Bennett was also a part-time steward for the Carmel community. After tending to an LFL that hadn’t been cared for, he found more around the Carmel area that library volunteers were unable to maintain due to limited staffing. “There are a lot of LFLs in Hamilton County that are not getting a once-aweek visit to make sure it hasn’t been vandalized and hasn’t ran out of books,” Bennett says. He has been working on making sure LFLs are enjoyable for all who come to grab a book, and says it’s important that the library isn’t only clean, but also has a variety of books. “The best thing we can do to support reading growth in our community is to make sure there are beginning-reader books as well as early-reader books,” Bennett says. People can go online to get started with an LFL, and also donate and help keep the local LFL locations free of messes.

“Get involved,” Sommer says. “Like you, the LFL stewards are busy with their families and jobs. Most can’t make it to every location every day, so please consider bringing a couple books when you visit the parks. Feel free to tidy up the library box too. Maybe even consider volunteering as a steward for an LFL close to your home.” “To me it is the absolute best possible investment into the future generations,” Reed adds. “Kids that read are better at school, much more informed and all around better off.” You can learn more and find a library near you at littlefreelibrary.org.

rowing up in Indianapolis, Theron Brooks found great joy in cooking and baking, especially desserts. She would watch baking shows on Food Network and foster that love of baking. It always intrigued her, and baking was still in the back of her mind as her other aspirations grew.
She made cakes for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and friends’ birthdays in the following weeks. A friend from high school asked Brooks to make her daughter’s birthday cake, and offered to pay for it. She realized she had more than enough experience to open her own bakery. By December of 2020, Cake Joy was up and running.
In April of 2020, Brooks was supposed to go on a trip to celebrate her much-anticipated 30th birthday. Unfortunately the trip was canceled, along with her birthday cake. So, Brooks decided to take matters into her own hands and bake her own birthday cake.
Potential clients submit requests through Brooks’ website. She reaches out to discuss flavors, design and size to create a truly customized creation. Brooks, a Geist resident, has clients all around Indianapolis including Geist, Fishers and Carmel.
“I did my research, purchased all the tools and ingredients I would need, and got to work,” Brooks says. “I already had a love for baking, so I figured I could do it. I thought it turned out pretty well for the first time, so I posted it on my social media. I got so many comments saying I should do this more often.”
“One thing that separates Cake Joy is these are truly one-of-a-kind cakes and completely customizable,” Brooks says. “When someone reaches out to me inquiring about a cake, we work together to find inspiration. Sometimes they tell me they don’t care too much about the design and trust me to come up with something 18 / AUGUST 2022 / TownePost.com
beautiful, which is really fun.” She offers 14 different cake flavors, from classic favorites like vanilla and chocolate to lesser-known flavors like banana, coffee and piña colada. She also provides 14 different cake fillings including vanilla, chocolate, mocha, strawberry, lemon buttercream, caramel cream, apricot and more. “One of the first wedding cakes I made had a maple bacon filling,” Brooks says. “I actually put bacon in it. In my head I thought, ‘This wedding cake has pork in it,’ but it was very well-received. I’m all about trying out whatever the customer wants.” Brooks specializes in buttercream design using a Swiss meringue buttercream. It’s made by whipping egg whites with sugar to make a thick meringue, and then whipping in butter. This makes the buttercream extraordinarily light and fluffy.
Cakes vary in price based on size, ingredients and detail. Brooks says she leaves pricing open at a base price, depending on the degree of work the cake will take. In her short tenure, the producers of “The Good Dish” discovered Brooks and her custom cakes through her social media presence. She was approached to participate in their recurring segment, “The Great American Dish Off.” “They reached out to me to participate in a competition about sheet-pan desserts,” Brooks says. “It wasn’t specifically about cakes, but I thought it would be an awesome experience because it’s national television, great marketing for Cake Joy and a good experience in general.” Brooks submitted her recipe for her Bourbon Peach Cinnamon Crunch Bar. The episode was filmed in March and aired in April. She saw a boost in her online traffic almost immediately. The show aired at different times in different parts of the country, and she could see when viewers in those locales would watch the show based on website clicks. “My engagement grew around 200% within a day or a few hours of the episode airing, so that was really interesting to see,” Brooks
says. “I had people reaching out through Instagram, and even a few who reached out for the recipe showcased on ‘The Good Dish.’ ”
“I love this being more of a hobby than my full-time business,” Brooks says. “I love the flexibility of taking on cakes around what is going on with my family that particular weekend. Maybe I’ll change my mind in For now, Cake Joy is a passion project for five years and want a storefront, but I’m not Brooks. She currently works at a local law quite there yet. I am thrilled with where I’m firm as a communications manager. She’s at currently and how much Cake Joy has also a full-time wife to Courtney Brooks and grown since I started.” mom to Athen Brooks. KENNY MOORE’S ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON AND OFF THE FIELD REFLECT AN UNYIELDING WORK ETHIC Writer / Ryan Kennedy Photography Provided by the Indianapolis Colts 20 / AUGUST 2022 / TownePost.com
I
ndianapolis Colts fans have known about Kenny Moore’s talent since the team signed the undrafted rookie out of Valdosta State University off of waivers in 2017. In 2021 the defensive back cemented his status as a star player, recording 101 tackles, a sack, four interceptions and a forced fumble. He was one of only two defensive backs to register 100 tackles and at least 10 passes defensed. The fans and the rest of the league took notice and Moore was selected to his first Pro Bowl.

Moore says during the season he’s focused on one thing - doing his job to the best of his ability. He says that as the season progresses, players start thinking more and more about the possibility of making the Pro Bowl.
Selection to the Pro Bowl hasn’t dampened Moore’s hunger to be the best. Every season is different, but Moore’s preparation is the same. “Proving myself first that I am who I say I am - I am who I believe I am,” he says. “It’s that worker’s mentality of being that Division II player, of being unknown, Moore has been involved in charity work unrecognized - just that hungry feeling. going all the way back to his days at Valdosta There’s a continuous chip on my shoulder State. “This is part of the reason why we play,” he says. “I mean, who wouldn’t want to be known as one of the best at their position? Yeah, we want to win a Super Bowl. Yeah, we want to win each week. But for us to do that, I have to play great.” Moore keeps an eye on all of the other defensive backs around the division, tracking their accomplishments, always working towards being the best defensive back in the American Football Conference (AFC). When Colts Head Coach Frank Reich read Moore’s name off the list of Pro Bowl selections, Moore flashed back to all the hard work, stress and preparation he had put himself through, from college to being an undrafted rookie, all the way through his professional career. The work Moore puts in to succeed on the field is matched by the work he puts in to help the community around him. Moore was nominated by the Colts for the 2021 Walter Payton Man of the Year award. We figured this would be a great way to be able to fundraise a lot of money.”
The run starts at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, and people can register to be a part of the 5K run or the one-mile wagon walk. “We’re going to have a lot of Riley kids at the event so that people can talk to them and share their stories,” Koley says. “Overall it’s just a good day fundraising for the children.”

ANDREW TODD OF MARY CASTLE ELEMENTARY NAMED TEACHER OF THE YEAR Writer / Matt Keating Photography Provided by Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township
Andrew Todd, a sixth-grade teacher at Mary Castle Elementary School, is proud that he won the Teacher of the Year award for the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, and says he enjoys teaching his students to be leaders. “I just finished my ninth year at Mary Castle, all of which have been in the sixth grade, where I teach all sixth-grade subjects,” Todd says. “I hope a few things that others saw when they visited my classroom were high expectations for all students, rigorous learning tasks, and a genuine love for my students and my position at Mary Castle. I want my students to be leaders in the building, and we strive for a classroom environment where students collaborate on virtually everything and play an important role in deciding how they’re going to practice a particular standard.” One of the many reasons Todd won the award is that he goes out of his way to help his students. “I think I go the extra mile to build relationships with my students, whether that’s inviting a small group back to the room for lunch, spending my prep time talking through a concern with a student, or attending a sporting event or performance for a student,” Todd says.
Todd loves teaching the sixth grade at Mary Castle, and doesn’t miss an opportunity to let his students, families or administration know it. “I think Lawrence Township teachers are some of the hardest-working teachers in the city, so to be selected to represent our district as the Teacher of the Year is a huge honor,” Todd says.
that the classroom runs smoothly. Our work is no different. Being a teacher provides me an opportunity to serve the community the best way that I know how. We are doing our part to ensure that this next generation of Hoosiers are socially, emotionally and academically fit to carry the torch when their time comes.” Todd believes his students made the school year special.
Teaching and coaching are the only “I’m a pretty competitive person, and two things Todd ever wanted to do this particular group of 30 students really professionally, and he considers himself fortunate to be able to pursue both passions. responded to the high expectations and collaborative environment that I try to establish in my classroom,” Todd says. “They “I was in the fifth grade the first time that I realized I wanted to be a teacher,” Todd says. let me push them all year, we built great “I always thought I’d be a high school social relationships along the way, and at the end of it all, many showed a ton of growth when studies teacher, but I decided not to major in education as an undergraduate at Wabash it mattered most.” College. He was offered a sixth-grade teaching position at Mary Castle in the summer of 2013, and he has been there ever since. Todd loves the career choice he made. “My parents raised my siblings and me with a service mindset,” Todd says. “We teach kids that they have to do their part to ensure 26 / GEIST MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2022 / TownePost.com

My class and my team brought out the best in me daily and I couldn’t have reached this milestone in my career without them. MOBILE DELICIOUSNESS JUST IN TIME FOOD TRUCK BRINGS ELEVATED CUISINE TO HANCOCK & HAMILTON COUNTIES
Co-Owner Justin Meadows serves up Texas-style barbecue, as well as Mexican and Cajun food.

A backyard cookout started it all. The Just in Time food truck was an idea formed about a year ago among partners Scott Jones and Justin Meadows. Since then they’ve taken their idea to new heights, one neighborhood and one location at a time. “Justin had invited me to a cookout at his house and the food was much better than something we ever paid for,” Jones says. “Three months later, we were invited to another cookout and the food blew me away. I asked Justin if he ever thought about opening up a restaurant or food truck.” That question changed everything for the duo. They started brainstorming on how to go about developing a food truck with a specialty 28 / GEIST MAGAZINE / AUGUST 2022 / TownePost.com
in Texas-style barbecue, as well as Mexican and Cajun food. Their recipes are inspired from the cultures and flavors of Texas and Louisiana, where Meadows grew up. “Everything’s made to order and we try to source as many authentic ingredients as possible,” Meadows says. “I just felt like the food was lacking in the area and I wanted to bring my style. I have always had a passion for cooking since I was little, and I wanted to do it but never had the opportunity to follow that dream until Scott came along with the business side while I handled the creative side.” Meadows says being truly authentic with their food sets them apart from others. The duo even goes as far as ordering po’boy bread from New Orleans, which is flash-frozen and sent to the food truck before events.

The food truck primarily serves Hancock and Hamilton counties, with events once or twice per week on average at varying locations including in some select neighborhoods.

There are plans to keep operating the food truck through the fall. The partners are hoping to be in business in the winter, but they are still working through some logistics. “The business has been more than what we initially expected,” Meadows says. “We haven’t done any marketing and we are turning down stuff because we don’t have the time. It has definitely exceeded expectations and our community has been phenomenal. They have really rallied around us.”

“We have been so fortunate,” Meadows says. “After our first event we had a ton of referrals from people that know people, so we haven’t had to spend a single dollar on marketing.”

“This is one of the very high-end food trucks in Indiana,” Jones says. “Everything we have on the truck from a food perspective - that quality of food we are serving - is not something you would get from the traditional food truck. All of our meats are smoked right before the event, and plates are pretty high end. Wait times might be longer but it’s worth it.”
REEL COMPETITORS
LOCAL DUO HEADING TO NATIONAL FISHING CHAMPIONSHIP Writer / Kylee White Photography Provided
In August, Cathedral High School juniors Wes Wodarz and Kyle Braun are headed to Lake Hartwell in South Carolina to compete in the 2022 Bassmaster high school national fishing championship. Braun and Wodarz competed in the Indiana BASS Nation state championship in order to
qualify for the national tournament. More than 13,000 people participated over the course of four tournaments, and only the top two finishers in the state championship head to nationals, one team being Wodarz and Braun. Both are excited for the opportunity. “I’m most excited for the experience,” Braun says. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime type of deal. I may never get this experience again.”

Wodarz says he’s excited not only to work with the lake and fish in South Carolina, but also to talk to locals to figure out the dos and don’ts of fishing in Lake Hartwell. “I’m most excited to spend a week down in South Carolina trying to figure out the lake and talking to the locals,” Wodarz says. Wodarz and Braun started fishing together at a young age, and have been able to make fishing a long-term goal. Starting at age 5, they began their fishing journey together and have continued ever since. “At my old house we lived right next to each other, and there was a pond we would walk to,” Braun says. “We would fish at that pond all the time. Eventually we caught more fish and kept fishing at more places.” Moving forward, both Braun and Wodarz are excited to take their fishing to the next level during nationals. “I’m just going to go out there and play with my heart out,” Braun says. “Scholarship would be great, maybe a sponsor or two,” Wodarz adds. “Nothing too big - we’re just happy to have made it as far as we did, really.” The national event will be televised. “It really means a lot,” Braun says. “It’s a big step in the career.”
