Let’s play a game of “What if…?” What if you were hiking in Fort Harrison State Park and you suffered a heart attack? What if there were no road or path into or out of the rugged ravine where you lay in need of immediate medical attention? Would you: a) be forced to accept that no ambulance, truck or car would be able to get to you in a timely manner? or: b) take some comfort knowing that immediate medical help was on the way thanks to a tank-like vehicle capable of traversing virtually any terrain—a six-wheeldrive, 53,000-pound behemoth that, most recently, patrolled the streets and sands of Afghanistan? This not-so-unlikely scenario is one of the reasons Lawrence Police Department (LPD) jumped at the chance recently to snatch up a surplus U.S. Army allterrain vehicle for pennies on the dollar (not many pennies, but a whole lot of dollars.) Indeed, the sticker price—still affixed to the vehicle—was $733,000 when it initially rolled off a military contractor assembly line. The Beast (as I’ll call it here) was sitting in Texas when Chief Michael Walton accepted the Army’s offer: “If you can pay to transport the vehicle, it’s yours.” Sixty-two hundred dollars later, LPD had itself a beast of a vehicle for emergency rescue and SWAT incident use. “We’re constantly looking for government equipment that the military is no longer using,” Walton explained during a recent interview with Lawrence Community Newsletter. “Anytime we have an opportunity to upgrade our equipment, we take advantage.” For example, the department has in its weapons arsenal several military-grade M-16 rifles.

The interior will be outfitted with benches to safely seat 12 fully outfitted SWAT Team members or up to 20 victims.

LPD currently employs a former BRINKS truck that’s been converted into an emergency-response vehicle, but the obvious benefits of the much larger, better-armored vehicle were too good to pass up. “This vehicle will travel uphill, through snow, water, mud. If we’re doing a rescue, we can do it in a better way,” Walton said. “With the existing vehicle we might not be able to.” LPD SWAT commander Capt. Tim Steele acknowledged that the department has been looking at a civilian version of a similar vehicle with a price tag of about $250,000. “By doing this, the chief saved the city a lot of money. It benefits citizens for future protection. This vehicle could drive right up to the bad guy and not even be damaged,” Steele said. The prospect of an active shooter is an ever-present threat that police around the country frequently train for. “Overall, there now are more dangers than there used to be,” said Chief Walton. “Thirty years ago when I started, you worried more about one-onone confrontations. We now are training for two or three people assassinating people in a school. Those things were unheard of [previously]. Now, we’re more worried about high-powered rifles and explosive devices. The potential is always great.” That’s where The Beast would come into play. LPD’s entire SWAT force of 15 officers, along with three medics from Lawrence Fire Department, can comfortably sit inside (2025 if standing). A turret atop the truck opens for use by a rifle marksman, and large, swingout rear doors allow for a swift exit. “It’s 100 percent safer than what we had. I feel

more comfortable sending my guys into a hot zone…going in and getting citizens out. With a patrol car there’s no true protection. Now, we have true protection,” explained Capt. Steele. Indeed, the former military vehicle’s bulletproof glass and steel-plated exterior can withstand a 50-caliber shell. The threat of a violent police run isn’t hyperbole. Capt. Steele recounted a recent call involving a Lawrence resident with mental health issues. “He was loaded with weapons—rifles, shotguns.” The Indianapolis Police Department Bomb Squad will also have access to the vehicle—providing technicians the opportunity to get closer, and to do so more safely, when dealing with an explosive device. LPD conducted a recent training session at an abandoned house using The Beast to practice tactical maneuvers. “It worked better than we expected,” said Chief Walton. “We learned some new ways to allow us more safe tactical approaches, entries. It will provide us with more successful response.” The department plans to replace The Beast’s jump seats with benches, and paint the vehicle black. Ominous? Yes. Intimidating? Perhaps. The point is to take some of the stress out of the equation—whether a police action or rescue-related event. “It’s like an umbrella,” offered Chief Walton. “I hope we don’t need it, but if we do, what I like best about it is providing our officers with the safest piece of equipment we could provide to make sure they go home at the end of the day, and that they can stay alive while rescuing someone else.”

The cockpit is well-outfitted and requires two drivers.

Local dance instructor Eric Blythe performed the “dance of a lifetime” recently when he flew to Los Angeles to compete in the TV competition “So You Think You Can Dance.” “It was truly an experience,” laughs Eric, now back home. “An awakening to see all the good dancers and to see how Hollywood works!” Eric says not only did producers want to see contestants dance, but also they wanted to hear a good story. “They asked a lot about my family,” he says. Eric told them about his father, who died when he was 10 and never got to see him dance.

Eric did start out in sports and quickly became a track star at North Central High School. He was offered track scholarships to four different colleges—Alabama, Florida, Purdue and Louisiana State—but a severe hip and knee injury ended his track career.

ifty years ago, acting on an idea to become a missionary, share his faith with others, and perhaps feed his sense of adventure, Father Phil Bowers embarked on his journey to serve God as a priest. Now, on the occasion of the Golden Anniversary of his ordination, Father Phil, pastor of Holy Spirit Parish at Geist, has announced his retirement. Parishioners knew the time was coming, and perhaps chose to forget about it; perhaps many even prayed faithfully to the Holy Father that Father Phil would stay the father eternally. Many would describe the distinguished pastor as the rock and glue that holds the parish together. But, after serving the parish for more than 20 years, the end of an era has arrived. We meet in Father Phil’s office to reflect on his time in the priesthood. As he ushers me in, I find it impossible to imagine a new leader. His office, adorned with a plethora of Purdue memorabilia; his persona, that of an eternal Boiler fan just as much on the altar as off. His homilies throughout the years have often been sprinkled with comments about the game, or about racing back from the game just in time to say mass. The Boilermaker banter is difficult for this Hoosier Alum and fan to hear. But I quickly remember the lesson on forgiveness and let it slide. We sit down to talk, and it seems parish life is carrying on as normal. It hits me that his days of active priesthood are waning, and I begin to feel a profound sense of loss. I lead off with a litany of pleas like, “But you’re too young,” and “It’s too soon.” True to form, Father counters with “Change is good. Without change, you don’t have growth.” And growth is exactly what Father Phil has brought to the

parish during his tenure. Upon his arrival at the parish in 1993, Father Phil launched his very first capital fundraising campaign. That first campaign took the parish from a few families meeting at a storefront on 96th Street to a parish of more than 8,000 families gathering in the beautiful building that now stands off Fall Creek Road. Since then, he’s overseen the construction of the education wing, the gym and parish life center, football and baseball fields, parish rectory and so much more. A monumental task for any pastor, Father Phil guided the parish through it with ease. Though he claims he’s not characteristically humble, he humbly says, “We got through it because we’re blessed with a tremendous amount of talent among the parishioners. They’re capable of doing everything. People were generous, and they sacrificed their time and talent to make it successful. Others handled design, colors and specs, so I was able to focus on the fundraising.” While Father Phil credits the incredibly capable, talented and generous parishioners, it’s undeniable that his fundraising efforts were so successful the parish was debt-free within two years after the church was constructed. As Father Phil continues to sing the praises of the parishioners, I smile as I remind him that tremendously capable and talented parishioners are very passionate and have very strong opinions. I add that it takes a special leader to navigate that. He nods and grins widely in agreement and says, “It all works because we’re in a faith-friendly environment. It tempers things and reminds people that the church says life is sacred and we all are called to be respectful. So that’s what happens.” Just like the successes of the parish came together

serendipitously, it’s clear there was a path that led Father Phil to Holy Spirit Parish. Although he often delights the parish with stories about his past as pastor at Purdue’s Newman Center, most cannot remember a time when he was not part of the parish. Like Jesus’ parables, the stories seem almost mythical. Father Phil explains that his stay on campus was supposed to last just four weekends. “I was assigned to help out while two of the four priests were completing their graduate degrees. I stayed 21 years and completed my graduate degree, too.” While the students were having the time of their lives, so was Father Phil. “I wasn’t an administrator in charge of fundraisers, so I had plenty of time to be with the students and minister to them. With 5,000 students at mass every weekend, there was never a dull moment,” he says. His ministry didn’t extend just to students. He says, “I got to know professors, people in the athletic department, and often got invited to events with guest speakers.” Father Phil and Mika Shaw at her First Communion.

We reminisce about campus days a while longer, then he takes me back to another wonderful time in his priesthood, his time at Immaculate Conception Baganga Parish in the Philippines. “It was a wonderful time. The people were the most delightful I’d met,” he begins. He describes how the Filipino culture, being very religious and incorporating expressive devotions and processions, taught him a lot. “The Filipinos showed me how the relationship with God can be seen like God is a very good friend.” Father Phil says that although learning the Cebuan language was a challenge,

everything about their kindness, welcoming nature and strong sense of family was wonderful and inspirational. Now, after five decades filled with many exciting adventures and countless ministries, it’s time for the good shepherd to leave his flock. “I’m not leaving, I’m just moving down the street,” he reassures me. Which means, I will still pass him during my morning jog. He says he’ll stay busy filling in for other area priests, and meet new people while visiting other parishes

“YOU CAN’T IMAGINE WHAT IT’S LIKE AND WHAT AN HONOR IT IS TO BE INVITED INTO PEOPLE’S LIVES TO SHARE IN THE MOST INTIMATE EMOTIONS, THE JOYS AND SORROWS OF THEIR LIVES IN THE MOST INTENSE FORM. TO EARN THAT KIND OF TRUST IS VERY HUMBLING.” Indianapolis Monthly 2011 - 2014 Five Star Realtor

for the weekend. The slower pace and the opportunity to get a broader vision of the whole diocese will be enjoyable, but he has a much simpler goal in mind. “I plan to make it to all the Purdue home games, tailgate, have fun and not have to race back to say mass.” As he offers his final reflections on his priesthood, Father Phil says it’s all that he thought it would be and much more. “You can’t imagine what it’s like and what an honor it is to be invited into people’s lives to share in the most intimate emotions, the joys and sorrows of their lives in the most intense form. To earn that kind of trust is very humbling.” Father Phil has surely earned that trust and more. He was chosen to serve two parishes, each for more than three times the length of a priest’s usual assignment. His absence at the parish will leave a deep void for some time to come. Though the new priest, yet unnamed, who follows him has gigantic shoes to fill (perhaps not unlike the famed red Bruno Maglis), Father Phil has some advice: “I’ll tell him he’s very lucky to have this parish. Ask what better looks like. Show them it’s time to trade up and put energy into what needs to be done.” Sage advice indeed from the wise father, as always. No matter what, it will be a big adjustment for a large parish that is so used to his no-nonsense, straighttalking, humorous manner. His poignant “homework” assignments have never failed to keep the congregation on the right path for the week. So what is his parting homework? “You should know I am not management, I am only labor. Pay attention: This is CHRIST’S church. So make it the parish HE wants it to be.”

“THE MASS NEVER ENDS. IT MUST BE LIVED. SO LET US GO FORTH IN PEACE TO LOVE AND SERVE THE LORD. THANKS BE TO GOD. ALLELUIA!”

And so we shall, Father Phil. After all,

SHOW YOUR PRIDE LAKESIDE FOR 6TH ANNUAL BOAT PARADE Writer / Janet C. Striebel

The boat parade represents a time to show off your patriotic spirit. From decorating the boat’s exterior to choosing the music on the interior represents a suspenseful ride for the whole family. Whether the judges pick your boat to win a prize or not, one thing is for sure: preparing for this contest marks a 4th of July tradition that establishes exceptional family memories. “It’s more about what the kids want to do with the boat-decorating than the adults,” says Kimberly Irish, founder and chair of Geist Boat Parade. She thought of this idea six years ago as she sat talking with Brian Hall, Geist Lake Coalition President, in his back yard. She adds, “What warms my heart is that this family event is the making of special memories.” Each year, boats are decked out to satisfy a particular theme such as: Red, White & Blue, M*A*S*H, the ’70s, and Show Your Spirit for Your Favorite Team.

“Since Fourth of July falls on a Friday this year, the theme is Family Movie Night,” says Irish. “We may see boats decorated from movie titles such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Grease, or Spider Man.” Look for your favorite movie characters in the grand marshal boat as teens will dress up to celebrate this theme. She recalls how one year, the kids related to the M*A*S*H theme even though they were too young to know this show. “They managed to relate so well by choosing ‘Monster Mash’ as their music....I think it’s special that kids will remember this 4th of July tradition creating a legacy for the families at Geist Lake.”

participants can feel free to build structures as high as they wish.

This year’s Grand Prize will include ownership of the traveling trophy that goes from winner to winner and $500 cash from Geist Marina. The second place prize will be a Bud Light wakeboard and Budweiser dartboard from T.A. Smith Distributing. The third place prize will be a $100 gas card from Geist Marina.

The boat parade spirit ricochets across the lake. Many residents decorate their yards in red, white and blue, displaying their patriotism. Irish encourages everyone to Show Your Pride Lakeside when she says, Packet pick-ups will take place at 6 p.m. at Eddy’s on Tuesday, July 1. The parade will start “Even if you can’t be a part of the boat parade, gather your family and friends and by the wooden bridge near Geist Road and cheer us on as we pass by your home!” Fall Creek at 6:15 p.m. The boat procession will head south to the dam and then head back to the Geist Marina Bridge where judges Contact Kimberly Irish at 317-414-4729 or kirish05@gmail.com to learn more or to will choose the top three winners. Boats will not actually go underneath the bridge, so register for the boat parade. 28 / GEIST / JULY 2014 / atGeist.com

RECYCLE, REUSE, RESTYLE, REPURPOSE:

VITIAN’S REUPHOLSTERY Writer & Photographer / Kathi Moore

Reupholstery seems like a lost art—taking grandma’s old floral sofa and redesigning it with new fabrics. It’s too detailed and daunting a task for many people to undertake on their own. But as ‘recycle, reuse and restyle’ is becoming increasingly popular, more people are starting to appreciate the economic and quality values of repurposing older furniture from thrift stores or in the attic. Vitian Robinson, owner of Vitian’s Reupholstery, noted how older pieces not only have memories attached to them, but they’re often more solid, quality-constructed pieces that can be customized for less than the cost of an equally sturdy new piece.

“Look for the bones,” she advised. A broken spring can always be repaired. So can burns, zippers, leather and even covered buttons. In fact, Vitian’s shop also works on boat and car seats and covers, patio furniture and commercial reupholstery projects. The business started in South Chicago, where Vitian’s mom Marian was working on furniture and her aunt was making draperies. Now, Vitian’s daughters Tawanna and Erica work with Marian. It truly is a family business. “The tools and techniques haven’t changed much over the decades,” Vitian pointed out, “but the business part is way different. It’s so much harder being a small business owner now…keeping books, advertising, networking.” She went on to say her biggest

shop Angie’s List Super Service awards. Each piece is done by hand and can easily last another generation or two. Cost to redo an upholstered chair is around $375 (dependent on chair and fabric) and a sofa could be $1,200. Then that sofa or chair is much more custom and high-end than anything you could find new in that price

HOOSIER ‘KARATE EXPERTS’ AUDITION FOR AMERICA’S GOT TALENT Writer / Tom Britt

CommonForm_July_2014.indd 1

6/25/14 1:52 PM

THIS IS MY FRIEND TERRY AND I AM HIS SENSEI

I

t was a Tuesday night after a long Memorial Day weekend and I was watching television, flipping back and forth between America’s Got Talent and a baseball game. Unfortunately, the Dodgers were beating the Reds, so I spent most of my evening watching the “talent show on steroids” premier episode. That’s when a 20-something kid came out and said, “My name is Dustin’s Dojo and I’m a trained black belt and I learned to be a black belt at Roger Baker’s Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida.” He took a bow with his silent sidekick who was wearing a ski mask “This is my friend Terry and I am his sensei,” he added, followed by a roar of laughter from the audience. Over the course of the next five minutes I witnessed the funniest karate parody I’ve ever seen. Dustin’s Dojo put on a demonstration featuring the breaking of flimsy wood slats, 60 seconds of full-extension punches, and a face full of salt thrown into his eyes by Terry “when he least expected it.” Comedy genius was rewarded with a golden buzzer save by judge Howard Stern, which allowed them to go to the next round in New York this July.

I rewound the skit, watched it with my wife several times, and posted a link of the clip on my Facebook wall the following morning, noting, “This was the hardest I’ve laughed in a long time.”

Then something magical happened. One of my Facebook friends left a comment that Terry Terry was his wife’s cousin from the Indy area. These guys are locals? I had to meet them. So we headed west with a carload of people: our trusty videographer Mitch Jacki, and magazine designers and fans Alyssa Sander and Austin Vance. Our rendezvous spot was in Covington, Indiana at the famous Beef House Restaurant in their back parking lot. From there, Dustin’s Dojo and Terry Terry took us to two of their training locations in Fountain County: The “snake pit” and the “road that leads down to the river.” Dustin’s Dojo, donning his WWE Santino Marella t-shirt, treated us to an on-camera, in-character interview. He told us about his karate inspirations, being bullied in 3rd grade and roundhouse kicking his nemesis in the ear, the ever-presence of attackers and what they would do with the $1 million grand prize should they win America’s Got Talent. “We would build the Roger Baker Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida, Fountain County.” Off camera, Dustin Britton (Dustin’s Dojo) and Ed Kent (Terry Terry) talked about their backgrounds and the events that led up to their premier. They met through their church, where Britton is the youth minister. When they heard that America’s Got Talent

was doing auditions in Indianapolis, they came up with these two characters and fleshed out the skit on the drive over to the Indiana State Fairgrounds. “We were in character all day long,” said Britton. “The producers didn’t know what to think of us. At the end of the day, I broke down and laughed when he questioned my ‘world record’ for full extension punches thrown in 60 seconds. The entire room erupted.” Their act is like watching Napoleon Dynamite trying to understudy Bruce Lee. Dustin’s Dojo speaks loudly, as if you’ll believe him if he says it with pronounced authority. Terry Terry, whose name is a spoof on local horror movie host Sammy Terry, looks around aimlessly, trying to spot attackers. “Only locals would get the Sammy Terry reference,” Kent said with a laugh. With their newfound fame, Britton has created a website at DustinsDojo.com where he posts exercise videos, karate demonstrations and merchandise including a “Roger Baker’s Taekwondo and Pizza, Pensacola, Florida” t-shirt. INDIANA’S NEW SECOND CHANCE LAW Writer / Mario Massillamany

We all make mistakes in our youth. Sometimes even as adults. Luckily for us, the Indiana General Assembly just revised the expungement laws (Indiana Code 35-5-5.5 and 35-38-8, 9) to give Hoosiers a second chance. The Legislature understood that old arrests and convictions can prevent you from getting a job, renting an apartment, serving in the military, or participating in service groups. Known as the “Second Chance Law,” the new law allows for sealing arrest records and expunging certain convictions.

SEALING PRIOR ARRESTS

Sometimes a person will get arrested but the charges will be dismissed due to mistaken identity, not committing the crime, or lack of evidence. But those arrests still appear in that person’s record. Under the new law, if you were arrested but never convicted of the crime charged, you can have the arrest sealed one year later. This can be vital for future employment, as the arrest will not appear in a background check, nor would you need to disclose the arrest on a job application.

EXPUNGING YOUR RECORD

If you were convicted of a misdemeanor or Class D Felony that was reduced to a misdemeanor (AMS), you can petition the court for an expungement five years after the conviction. For D Felony convictions that did not result in a bodily injury, the waiting period is eight years from the date of conviction. For more serious felonies, the waiting period will be either eight or ten years and can require written consent from the

If you have multiple convictions that qualify, you must expunge them at the same time. If your convictions occurred in the same county, you can file them under one petition. If they are from multiple counties in Indiana, you must file separately in each county. There are no filing fees for sealing records but there is a $141 state civil filing fee for expunging convictions. Due to the intricacy of the law and only getting one chance at expungement in the State of Indiana, it is highly recommended that you consult an attorney. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that restores all of your civil rights, including the right to vote and the right to own firearms. A DAUGHTER’S TRIBUTE TO THE FATHER SHE NEVER KNEW Dad. Despite the physical absence, Brigitt knew he was near. “I learned about my dad at Indianapolis native Corporal Robert V. Brigitt spent much of her life discovering the father she never met and yet loved all the same—grateful for the pieces of his life left behind.

THEN A MIRACLE HAPPENED.

Fifty-nine years after her father’s death, Brigitt found an AWON online chat group discussing the discovery of recordings that a few of their fathers made prior to deployment. As a free service, Pepsi Corporation had offered GIs the opportunity to record personal messages on vinyl records to be sent home. Could it be possible? Brigitt asked her mom if she recalled any such recording. Initially, she said no. A few months later at Thanksgiving dinner, her mom produced an envelope containing a warped 45 rpm record with Cpl. Reno’s handwriting on the cover. Brigitt’s heart raced with excitement. Thanks to the technical genius of a Caito family neighbor who was an audiologist, Brigitt heard her father’s voice. “Hearing my dad’s voice for the first time was incredible. No one ever told me he sounded just like his brother,” remembered Brigitt. AWON members are proud of their fathers’ sacrifices. For them, dads are forever young, forever perfect, and are heroes. “They died that we might live in freedom. Their lives were cut short, but they are with us still,” said Brigitt. If you grew up without your father, wouldn’t it be natural to make him perfect? This writer says, “Happy Father’s Day, Dad. I love you.” A more detailed version of this story is available at TownePost.com.

Undoubtedly you’ve seen or heard about the newest restaurant at Hamilton Town Center. Everybody is trying to get to Chuy’s for some Tex-Mex food. The question is… does Chuy’s live up to the hype? Straight from Austin, Texas, this chain restaurant brings a funky new Tex-Mex addition to the typical Mexican restaurants here in Central Indiana. From the moment you walk in, you’ll imagine you’re visiting the Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio. With its vibrant colors and whimsical Mexican artwork,

CHUY’S TEX MEX AT HAMILTON TOWN CENTER

Chuy’s just feels like a fiesta! And that certainly caught your Girls About Town’s attention. Whether it’s the Nacho Car Bar on the immediate left, the main dining area with its forest of palm trees created and hand-painted by an artist from Belize, or the quaint outside patio with Tejano music playing in the background, you’ll want to sit back, relax, and order up some margaritas. Surprise, surprise: we started in the bar. We loved the Elvis-inspired 1950s car (yes, it is actually a car) stuffed full of tortilla chips and salsas. Its self-serve style makes it easy to scoop up extra chips…and nobody will know. Even better, from 4-7 p.m. daily, the Nacho Car Bar really revs up during happy

hour, serving ground beef, refried beans, warm chili con queso and an abundance of salsas and chips for an unparalleled nacho experience you won’t find anywhere else… and it’s free! The walls are decorated with colorful art and framed pictures of cute dogs; you can even bring in your own poochie pic for display. TVs surround the room as well, so diners are sure not to miss their favorite sporting event. Our waiter automatically brought us the Salsa Fresca and then happily explained all the other seven different sauces available to go with dinners and our ultra-thin tortilla chips. They’re all spice-meter ranked on the menu, from mild to medium to hot, so you know what you’re getting into before they dish

it out. Both of us really enjoyed trying the different sauces and ultimately settled in with our favorites, with Rachel preferring the Creamy Jalapeño, and Chalene preferring the Salsa Fresca. It’s made fresh every hour and is amazing…like the kind you probably make at home. When we opened the menu to order some beverages, we were taken aback by the selection and ingenuity of margarita styles. We were impressed with their freshness. Every margarita here is made with fresh-squeezed lime juice, and premium tequilas are in no short supply. You’ll love Chuy’s Famous Ritas, served on the rocks, frozen, strawberry, or “swirl and dot.” You can also try the not-to-miss Texas Martini, made to order with the tequila of your choice—”all shook up, not stirred”—and served with jalapeñostuffed olives.

As fun and impressive as the decor, bar, and margaritas are, la estrella real is the food. (That’s the “real star,” for all you gringos.) Food is taken seriously here! From the onsite comal machine whipping out fresh hand-rolled tortillas behind a glass wall, to the homemade daily salsas frescas, you’ll love it all. The food here is so fresh they don’t even have a freezer in the kitchen. It’s all made from scratch daily, and you can definitely taste the difference. This place is Tex-Mex heaven! The Appetizer Plate, chock-full of everything from guacamole to flautas and quesadillas, was awesome and more than filled us, but that didn’t stop us from over-indulging with some off-thehook entrees. The fajitas made with real beef skirt steak and whole chicken breasts are marinated for 24 hours in a signature blend of Shiner Bock beer, serrano peppers, lime juice and special spices. The Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom enchiladas are a Chuy’s original with the chicken roasted daily and hand-pulled for an exceptional enchilada that’s topped with green chile chipotle sauce. Do not miss trying this dish!

DRAT! MIL-FOILED AGAIN! GEIST RESERVOIR’S EXPENSIVE BATTLE AGAINST EURASIAN MILFOIL HOW A CONTROVERSIAL FUNDING SOURCE MIGHT CLEAR THE WATER Writer / Neal G. Moore atGeist.com / JULY 2014 / GEIST / 45

O

nce again, Eurasian Watermilfoil is making waves at Geist Reservoir. For several years, Geist homeowners, boaters and jet skiers have watched— somewhat helplessly—as the nasty aquatic plants with their feathery leaves invaded the lake’s coves and inlets. This summer is no exception. On any given day at certain spots on the lake, you can see what looks like a slimy, green carpet covering the water’s surface. The real trouble lies beneath. Milfoil wraps around boat props, and is sucked into the intakes of jet skis. There’s the prospect of a swimmer getting tangled in the green mess and possibly drowning. In a word, the milfoil is foul. There is, however, an ongoing treatment program to foil the milfoil. Last year, the Geist Lake Coalition (GLC), a loosely constructed watchdog group concerned with lake safety and water quality, launched a pilot program to beat back the reservoir’s milfoil. Roughly 130 acres of the hardesthit spots on the lake were treated with chemicals at a cost exceeding $100,000— money donated by concerned citizens. Brian Hall, the coalition’s president, says it worked. “Just look out there at the reservoir and tell me if it doesn’t look better than

After

it did two years ago. I think it’s definitely making a difference. And, if we hadn’t [used the chemicals] you could only imagine what the condition would be like today,” he adds. “At any point in time, this lake could become toxic, and we’re trying to hold it at bay with the effort we’re making.” Managing public expectations is proving to be more difficult. Hall maintains that many people can’t distinguish between milfoil and the lake’s natural plant life. “They see a plant and think we’re not being effective,” Hall laments. “That may be a plant that we can’t kill.”

the milfoil would die. There’s a problem, however. Citizens Energy—which owns the reservoir, and provides drinking water to Indianapolis—isn’t on board with the idea. Hall says Citizens is concerned the lake might not recharge to its needed level in the event of insufficient snow melt and spring rains. But Hall’s not buying. “The likelihood is that it would. That would be the preferred way, and then you’d save the cost and effort of raising funds, and we’d also save ourselves from the chemicals in our drinking water,” he says.

Another long-term solution requires dredging out the heavy sediment that is This summer, 300 of the reservoir’s several feet deep at lake bottom, a result approximately 1,650 acres are being targeted of agricultural, business and residential in locations where the milfoil is most soil run-off. Hall says this sediment holds troublesome. The chemical treatments are various nutrients that feed the plant life and the work of Aquatic Control, the Seymour- algae. “If we can get that out, it will help based vendor hired by the GLC. Some cyanobacteria can produce toxins that are among the most powerful natural poisons known. These toxins have no known antidotes. The toxins are poisonous to humans and may be deadly to livestock and pets.” Hall warns that such an event would be devastating. “The EPA will lock us out—for swimming, boating or fishing.”

can’t continue to go door-to-door, asking for dollars,” Hall cautions. “We create a district that encompasses the communities that are adjacent to the reservoir, and through an assessment based on their property values… that assessment goes directly into the CD fund and then is managed by the elected officers [of the CD],” says Hall, adding that another means of generating revenue might be a required DNR-type sticker for all boats using the Geist launches. “It’s not creating another layer of government. It’s really about us, and the transient boaters who use the reservoir. It kind of becomes a user fee, so it’s the most fair, as far as charging those who enjoy the reservoir.”

While treatment chemicals continue being dumped into the lake, discussions are underway to establish a Geist Reservoir Conservancy District (CD). The GLC argues Hall concedes that there are differences the time has come to generate sustainable of opinion about how to address the revenue to pay for more aggressive lake’s future, including the likelihood of eradication programs, like dredging. “We

opposition to the Conservancy District. But he’s convinced it represents the most equitable solution to a problem that, if not addressed more aggressively, will hurt property values and put a dent in the local tax base. “The reservoir has been in decline for several years now. We treat as much as we can. We believe the conservancy district is the best solution,” emphasizes Hall. “It’s definitely a case of pay me now, or pay me later. And, if you pay me later, it’s going to be a hell of lot more than if you pay me now.” More information about the milfoil interdiction effort is available at geistlake.org.

FIRST LADY, GOVERNOR VISIT GEIST RESERVOIR Writer / Ali Duff

On June 18, First Lady Karen Pence (also joined by her husband, Governor Mike Pence) met the Indy SurviveOars at Geist Reservoir and presented them with not only Vera Bradley bags, but also words of encouragement and hope. The women of the SurviveOars are Indiana’s only breast cancer survivor dragon boat team. “It gives me great pleasure to share the Vera Bradley bags with the dragon boat team members,” Pence said. “Vera Bradley’s signature charity supports breast cancer awareness and the continued search

for a cure. Her dedication to this cause through the First Lady’s Charitable Foundation provides a wonderful connection to these women and honors their personal stories of survival and hope.”

The special pink-flowered Vera Bradley bags were designed for Pence’s inaugural First Lady Luncheon this past April in support of the Indiana First Lady’s Charitable Foundation. The Foundation was started by Pence in August of 2013 as a means to acknowledge and support charities around Indiana. Pence also encouraged the Indy SurviveOars to apply for a grant from the First Lady’s Charitable Foundation.

For some, fashion is about more than keeping up with the current trends. Just ask Geist-area resident Judy Kendall. In fact, Kendall might tell you that fashion—at least in part—funds her passion. She’s the founder of Anchor of Hope Charities, a nonprofit organization that supports educational services in Africa.

Kendall and her fellow volunteers brought the Third Annual Anchor of Hope Charities Fashion Show to the Yacht Club at Geist Lake May 30.

The event featured designer duds from Mary and Martha’s Exceedingly Chic Boutique in Zionsville and raised funds to promote Anchor of Hope Charities’ threetiered agenda. According to Kendall, her organization supports education by building

Anchor of Hope Charities has benefited more than 35,000 of the world’s most vulnerable children and families in Zambia, Africa, since it was founded in 2007. Kendall was inspired to launch the charity after a trip abroad. She had always wanted

to take a safari, and her dream trip included several stops off the beaten path in Zambia. What she saw there was shocking. “I saw an opportunity to do some good there,” she said. “And I was inspired to help.” When she returned from the trip, she founded Anchor of Hope Charities. In the years since, the group has grown to include 135 volunteers—15 in here in Indiana and 120 on the ground in Zambia. Anchor of Hope Charities has since raised close to $500,000 and used the funds to truly make a difference in the lives of those in this impoverished nation.

Kendall said the organization has built three schools in Zambia. Additionally, they are able to provide shoes to 17,000 schoolchildren through a partnership with Toms shoes. “By working with Toms through this partnership, we’re able to provide kids with brand-new shoes every six months, until they graduate,” Kendall said. “Many of them don’t have shoes, and for many, the shoes are more than just protection. They’re an incentive to stay in school.” Over the past year, Anchor of Hope Charities has expanded from helping schools and children into helping women by empowering them through agriculture.

“By teaching these women about farming, we’re empowering them,” Kendall said. “These women might not have the skills or tools to make it themselves, and we’re giving them the ability to feed their families and earn a living.” Part of Anchor of Hope’s agricultural work is providing access to fresh water by drilling reachable boreholes. “Without these accessible boreholes, women will spend three hours a day just getting water for their families,” Kendall said. “And that water is often contaminated. Not in my neighborhood! That’s what Geist resident Jennifer Bennett and her neighbors are saying to another couple’s petition to develop an area around 96th and Mollenkopf Road into a commercial zone. Petitioners Randy and Diane Campbell, who own two plots of land in the neighborhood, petitioned the Fishers Town Council

to rezone the property to allow for commercial development. The petition cited that the land is no longer suitable for residential use after 96th Street was expanded, leaving residents with minimal landscaping and front yards. The Campbells go on to state that the well and septic systems in the adjacent neighborhood are failing, causing drainage problems. Now, the couple wants to sell the land and rezone it to allow for commercial development. The proposed developer, Alboher Development Company, revealed they have already received bids from two national retail chains. But, just like with the addition of the unsightly billboard at 79th and Fall Creek, the petition was met with opposition. “Changing this area to a commercial zone devalues our properties, increases crime and leaves empty commercial space,” says Jennifer Bennett. At the hearing, many of her neighbors agreed, citing additional concerns such as noise and traffic congestion. Resident Denise Miller expressed concern about the private agreement among the owners of the 11 properties in the rezone. Like Miller, Patrick Klein expressed opposition to this proposal in which much is unclear and not fully disclosed. Miller also added that after a rezone, homestead exemptions would no longer apply, causing taxes to rise. Miller was also concerned that once properties are rezoned to commercial, the residents cannot build homes in that district and may face problems acquiring loans. Ultimately, the Campbells withdrew their petition when it seemed the chances of an approval were slim. Although this is the second successful Geist-area protest, the neighbors aren’t ready to breathe a sigh of relief yet. With the road expansion and constant updates in the area, change will inevitably keep coming. Jennifer says, “If a petition to rezone the area arises again, I will fight it with just as much energy. This is my home and where I’ve chosen to raise my family.” Overall, Jennifer says she trusts the Council members and planners in Fishers to look at the whole picture and do what is right to make sure no harm is caused to property owners.

lot of neighborhoods hold special events throughout the year, but few throw an event quite as grand as the Annual Cornhole Tournament of Champions held in Admirals Landing. Now in its sixth year, the tournament (which the founder refers to as a “wicked awesome display of athletic talent and endurance”) is hosting a record 32 teams and has now become a charity event. I thought it was time to meet the founder of this event—the Godfather of Cornhole, Matt Hubbard.

As I pulled up to the tennis courts where the tournament is held, I spotted Matt next to a tall trophy topped with ears of corn, the coveted prize for the winner of the tourney. “This is our Hominy Cup,” says Matt proudly. This is the third version of the Cup. The original, in 2009, was lost in a divorce settlement and the second version lasted four years, 2010-2013) until a suspected act of vandalism rendered it structurally unsafe.

Customized investment portfolios that perform.

Matt explains how the “lore of this athletic event” has reached new heights as players now dress in costumes for prizes, and sponsors such as Papa John’s, Subway, Lincoln Square, Geist Bakery, Eddy’s, and even Matt’s eye doctor, Bruce Burns, have come on board to help. A neighborhood resident sings the national anthem and another throws the first pitch. “And to think all this started with a conversation over a beer,” laughs Matt, who is an employee benefits consultant at Hylant. Along with the fun though, Hubbard, who hails from New Hampshire where they are more apt to pick up a game of hockey rather than cornhole, was looking for an opportunity to turn this annual event into something more meaningful and special. He knew it was time when longtime Admirals Landing residents Emil and Sherin Khamis lost their 9-year-old daughter, Dounia, to cancer in 2010. “We all just wanted to do something special for them,” says Matt. This year, proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Dounia Khamis Memorial Scholarship Fund. Dounia’s mother, Sherin, is providing lunch for the athletes on game day.

CHILD ACTORS DEBUT AT THE MUD CREEK BARN Writer / Ray Compton

On a perfect, sunny Saturday afternoon in mid-June, it was not surprising to find a group of teenagers gathered near Geist Reservoir. Only they were not boating on the water. Or grilling out. Or exchanging texts. Instead, the diligent dozen were bunkered for hours inside the Mud Creek Barn at Geist, practicing their lines, building their set and picking out wardrobe for their upcoming performances of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe from the fabled The Chronicles of Narnia. The five-play series, running July 25-27 and August 1-2, is this summer’s production by the A.C.T. teen group and its mentors from the Mud Creek Theater membership. The collaboration of young actors and veterans of the community theater was spawned four years ago by veteran Mud Creek actress and executive Linda Eberharter. “The kids do everything,” said Eberharter of the 21 members for this summer’s play. “We allow them to pick out the show, plan the publicity, create fundraisers and do

SCOUT’S HONOR Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger atGeist.com / JULY 2014 / GEIST / 65

Scout is: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. Beloved Scoutmaster Angelo Peduto conducted his life according to this poignant Boy Scout law and embodied it. Six months after his sudden and tragic passing, his Boy Scout Troop 446, chartered at Saint Simon, is committed to carrying on his legacy.

A

With the groundbreaking of the memorial honoring Mr. Peduto, the troop took the first steps in cementing his memory in the hearts of their troop and others across the state. The ceremony took place at the Golden-Burke Boy Scout Center on the city’s Northside on Monday, May 12. As I proceeded to the memorial site with the crowd of Scouts, family and friends, the somber mood in the air exposed the raw grief that would linger for some time to come. Michael Peduto (an Eagle Scout) shared a few words about fond memories he had of time together in Scouting with his brother Angelo. Everyone in the crowd got an opportunity to move a piece of earth from a temporary fire ring that will later become Mr. Peduto’s memorial.

being based at St. Simon, troop leaders explored various outdoor locations to celebrate and remember their Scoutmaster. Ultimately the decision was made to base the structure at the Boy Scout center where all Scouts in the area could enjoy it. BSA Troop 446 has a tradition of carrying a portion of ashes from their previous camping sites to be discharged into the fire of the next camping trip’s campfire. The troop began this tradition when they obtained a portion of ashes that were started from a campfire at the very first Boy Scout camping grounds in Brownsea Island of southern England, in 1907, by the gentleman who originated the Scouting movement, Lord Baden-Powell. These ashes have been carried from campfires in over 60 countries, across six continents and from the moon. During the groundbreaking ceremony, each Scout and family members of Troop 446, along with Peduto family members and friends, placed a pinch of these ancient ashes onto the site of the future fire ring. This memorial truly will symbolize an unbroken chain linking Scouts around the world.

“The plan was always to incorporate a fire structure, because Angelo had earned his A PowerPoint presentation by troop leaders Firecrafter designation in Scouting in addition just prior to the ceremony had already given to his Eagle Scout rank,” the troop leaders the crowd a flavor of the impressive finished explained. The prestigious designation is product soon to be under construction. At the awarded to Scouts who complete several center of the memorial will be a masonry stone rigorous and challenging tasks. Peduto’s widow, DeeDee, said, “If anyone is deserving of this, he is. This is so fitting The memorial sprang to life after the troop because he was so committed to always doing received a significant amount of money in the right thing.” At the ceremony, she and her his memory from the funeral. Among the children, son Adrian and daughter Gia, were donors, an anonymous source was so moved visibly moved by this gracious gesture. But by the loss, he felt compelled to donate. As an adult, he devoted countless Donations in hand, ideas began to flow. hours volunteering his time to scouting as With Angelo and his family a regular fixture a Cub Scout Pack Master, then Boy Scout at Sunday mass at St. Simon, and the troop Troop leader and role model. Though I have

heard many describe his role in Scouting, the meaning of it didn’t start to sink in until I looked around and saw the faces of all the ones who loved him so dearly. Eager to learn more about this extraordinary Scoutmaster, I met up later with DeeDee. Already I’d gotten a small sense of what a remarkable person and exemplary life he lived in his short time. Based on all Angelo accomplished and his tireless dedication, I got the impression that he was a vivacious character, full of life and laughter. But I quickly learned otherwise. A floodgate of emotions opened as she began telling me more about her husband of 19 years. “Angelo was a quiet, soft-spoken, faithful man,” she said. “He was always patient at home, even if his patience was short at work. Whether he was at home or away, he was always involved with the kids.” The conversation slipped back to Scouts. She told me that later, during his college years, he became an adult leader in a troop. He became involved in their son Adrian’s troop after being active in faith formation at Saint Simon for a while. He decided he enjoyed working with kids. “It was all an extension of his commitment to faith and family,” she said. When Adrian joined the Cub Scouts in first grade, the troop was dwindling. Angelo and a small group of adult volunteers worked hard to revive the troop and increase their membership. “He just wanted to give back to the Scouts all that he’d gotten out of it,” DeeDee explained. Angelo and son Adrian were frequently away at scouting activities and trips, and DeeDee was used to it. She was also used to knowing their campouts were in locations unreachable by cell phone. She and daughter Gia enjoyed many mother-daughter weekends knowing the Peduto boys were having a great time and probably hard at work and play. The campfire at evening’s end was always Angelo’s favorite time. But she remembers one outing very vividly. “The boys went to the Rocky Mountain High Adventure Base Boy Scout Camp in Colorado,” she began. Knowing Angelo’s history with atrial fibrillation, she worried about this particular trip. I was more than green with envy as she described that part

of the trip included a hike up a 14,231-foot mountain, which the troop was scheduled to summit at sunrise. He had suffered an acute episode of AFib due to the thin air in the high altitude. In true Scouting fashion, he made a very “brave” decision and returned to base camp, with a promise to the boys to definitely make it to the top of the next one. DeeDee managed a smile as she explained how disappointed Angelo was that he couldn’t finish that mountain climb. “Quitting early was never part of Angelo’s plan,” she said. An incurable entrepreneur, he put his all into his work, as well. Partners in business with his older brother Michael, the two grew Circle City Tickets from a small ticket broker

operation in 1982 to the successful business it is today. “I have never seen anyone so close as these two brothers. They did nearly everything together. Mike handled one aspect of the business, Angelo, the other. But they never fought,” DeeDee said. As close as they were, some things escaped the watchful eye of Angelo’s older brother. “There were things Angelo did in Scouts that I never knew about,” Mike Peduto admits, during the groundbreaking ceremony. As his emotions rose to the surface, one could only hope that he and the rest of the family find comfort in seeing Angelo’s spirit and passion for Scouting live on.

“He was an amazing person,” DeeDee said. “He was a dreamer, and he always wanted to retire, live on an island, own a bar and teach diving lessons.” Though Angelo never had the opportunity to live out that dream, DeeDee intends to make sure their children pursue theirs. She said, “Adrian is still on track to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. He wants to become an astronaut, and Gia would like to become an astrobiologist.” Although the future is unknown, DeeDee said she is certain of her husband’s legacy, “I hope this memorial will serve as a reminder about how important it is to put faith and family first.” The memorial is expected to be completed in summer 2014.
