Chickens Roost at St. Simon the Apostle School By Tom Britt St. Simon the Apostle is boasting some unlikely new members to their catholic flock: Three laying hens. “My mission is to put a chicken coop in every school in Indianapolis,” said Andrew Brake, founder of Nap Town Chickens, a nonprofit group advocating urban chicken farming based in Indianapolis. Principal Donavan Yarnall explains that chickens can teach students about recycling, composting, and science. “The kids will see the whole cycle of the chicken,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity to bring the core curriculum into the classroom.” All students and teachers were called to an assembly in the gymnasium where Brake spoke about their new tenants. 8

With a scaled model of the coop, he explained their daily habits and the design of their chicken coop. Then the students were led outside on the north end of the building to view the coop, asking questions of Brake as they peeked inside the wire mesh. “We throw away so much food everyday,” said kindergarten teacher Katie Boester, “we’ll start giving these chickens some of our scrap food each day and they will produce eggs in return.” Throughout the school year, each grade of the K-8 school will adopt the chickens and care for them. Teachers will also be integrating various lesson plans into their curricula. During the summer months, various parishioners have agreed to care for the chickens. Brake came up with the idea of Nap Town Chickens last fall

after he organized the first annual “Tour de Coupe.” This self-guided bike tour took visitors to 12 backyard chicken coops throughout the Butler-Tarkington, Broad Ripple, and Rocky Ripple area. Through donations, the event raised over $5,000 and hosted over 600 visitors. Thanks to corporate sponsors like Garrity Stone and Heldman Exteriors, Brake will deliver 12 chicken coops by the end of May to schools around Indianapolis. “There is so much interest in this amongst teachers and communities, this hasn’t been a hard concept to sell,” admits Brake.

(Right) Watch a video from the day featuring kindergarten teacher Katie Boester on www.atGeist.com. If you plan on attending the St. Simon Festival June 7-9, look for the chickens on display. Yarnall confirmed that extra precautions will be made to insure the coop is safe and their inhabitants are unharmed. For more information about the Nap Town Chickens, visit www.NapTownChickens.org.

Grant Could Fund Sidewalk Along Carroll Road

By Tom Britt Residents living in Admirals Bay, Treasure Pointe, and Cardinal Woods know the dangers of trying to walk, bike, or run along Carroll Road just south of 96th Street. A sidewalk from the Hamptons at Geist dead ends just across from Cardinal Drive, leaving pedestrians to fend for themselves for approximately 400’ of curved, heavily wooded, shoulderless roadway until they reach Treasure Pointe. Several residents have sent emails or stopped me at Mama Bears to see what can be done about this stretch of road.

Putting in a sidewalk couldn’t be that hard. However, after some research, I found out that this small stretch of road is actually in Hancock County and falls under the jurisdiction of the the Town of McCordsville. In addition, the terrain is not flat, has at least a 12’ change in elevation, and will require two and possibly as many as four bridges to span ravines and ditches. Last spring, I attended a Town of McCordsville Public Works Committee meeting to talk about this project. The board was very receptive to the idea of building a sidewalk, unfortunately their budget for such projects was already spoken for. A few weeks later, Mark Witsman and Ron Crider from the committee followed up with an on-site visit to survey the situation. Based on the elevation change and complexity of the terrain, they recommended getting an engineering design study completed. This blueprint would give contractors, and the Town of McCordsville, a better idea of the design and costs to build this sidewalk. Geist Harbours Property Owners Association (“GHPOA”), the homeowners association that encompasses Treasure Pointe, Admirals Bay, and 11 other neighborhoods around the south end of the reservoir, has wanted to get behind this project for a long time. Their 2,380 homes would all benefit from this sidewalk, creating a trail system that would connect over 95% of the circumference of Geist Reservoir.

(Top) A sidewalk from the Hamptons at Geist dead ends in front of the entrance to Cardinal Woods, leaving pedestrians to fend for themselves down this narrow, curving, shoulderless Carroll Road corridor. (Above) The yellow line highlights the scope of the sidewalk project that the Town of McCordsville and GHPOA hope to build. 10

newsletter

| a p r i l 2 0 1 2

Last spring, the GHPOA board earmarked $10,000 to be used on this sidewalk project. Bids were solicited for the engineering design study and the average price tag came in around $20,000. I for one did not want the GHPOA to go into this project alone. The project has been at a stalemate since last spring, until I got a phone call from McCordsville’s Town Manager, Tonya Galbraith. “We’re looking for a partner organization to apply for a Place Based Investment Fund grant to get that Carroll Road sidewalk built,” she said.

At stake is a matching grant from the Indiana Department of Tourism for up to $50,000 to fund “efforts by Indiana communities to become even greater places to visit, live and work.” The Town of McCordsville and GHPOA will commit $50,000 towards the project, the Indiana Department of Tourism matches that $50,000 to give the project $100,000 for completion.

GHPOA voted to commit their $10,000, the Town of McCordsville committed $40,000, and the application was submitted on April 13. The Indiana Department of Tourism will be making their decisions on April 23, so keep your fingers crossed! A big “thank you” to Tonya Galbraith who sought this grant out and pulled all the necessary paperwork together to make the application. At the end of the day, all Geist residents around the reservoir will benefit by having a safe sidewalk connecting the Fall Creek Road bridge to the neighborhoods to the south and east. Abby Appelt, founder of Thermography of Indianapolis.

Thermography of Indianapolis:

Finding Thermal Abnormalities in the Body By J. Andy Murphy The world of medicine, which is supported by the wonders of specialized imagery, is moving toward what might be the difference in discovering a disease well before it has advanced to life threatening situations. Abby Appelt was a woman diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue/ Fibromyalgia Syndromes. She went from doctor to doctor, undergoing multiple examinations, tests, blood draws and consultations. With no results or improvement in her condition, she found herself spending 95% of her time in 12

One day she decided she had to go beyond traditional methods and seek out alternative medicine. With this new perspective of alternate pathways, she told me she began by making healthier choices. First, she stopped all the pills, changed her diet and began slowly to exercise. She then began to read everything she could on diseases that had been diagnosed for her. “I didn’t find the answer right away

and had to try several things before I found something that worked for me,” Abby said. “Eventually my search led me to the Internet for alternative medical practitioners who were involved in the FDA approved, digital infrared thermal imaging commonly known as Thermography, which is a brief, non-invasive, radiation-free, pain free, clinical imaging procedure for detecting and monitoring a number of diseases and physical injuries, by showing the thermal abnormalities present in the body,” she added.

Spring Means Farmer’s Markets, Healthy Food By Melissa Webb Spring is here and summer is just around the corner. As we make our way outside after a long winter, our thoughts often turn to the garden. We all want fresh food, but we don’t all have a green thumb. Thank goodness the Farmer’s Market

has made a huge comeback in recent years. The push to eat local and organic drives more people to support Indiana’s smaller farms. It’s good for the local economy, good for the planet, and good for nutrition. Farmer’s markets enhance our sense of community. They become a weekly activity that the entire family can enjoy. There’s more than vegetables at the local farmer’s market. Local artisans bring bread, cheese, eggs, meat, even baked goods, caramel corn and flowers. Here are several other trends that go hand-in-hand with the farmer’s market.

Community Supported Agriculture Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) differs from the farmer’s market in that you purchase a “share” of a local farm, usually an organic farm, and you share in the harvest all summer long. CSA’s differ slightly in their set up, but generally you pay for the entire season in advance. Then as the season progresses, you receive a weekly delivery of whatever the farm has harvested. Each farm grows different vegetables based on their location, soil, etc. Farmer’s markets are great resources for organic vegetables and fresh produce. Here, farmers sell their crops at the Geist Farmer’s Market at the corner of Oaklandon and Fox Road.

You’re bound to see Indiana favorites like tomatoes and cucumbers, but might also be surprised by mushrooms or melons. Powered by

Joining a CSA is a food adventure and a great way to eat not only local but seasonal. There’s still time to find and sign up for a CSA before the season is too far underway.

Canning CSA’s and Farmer’s Markets have brought back the age-old tradition of canning. Many of us recall the days when Grandma spent hours in the kitchen putting up green beans and tomato juice. Now a new generation has embraced this practice. All you need is a pressure canner, lots of produce, and some extra time. Canning can be a lot of fun and the whole family can help. Short on extra time? Many veggies can be frozen instead.

juicing Juicing is also a hot trend these days. All you need a juicer and an excess of produce. The fun is in creating new blends that will please everyone in the family. Most people think of fruit when they think of juice. Most fruits, except the banana, make wonderful juice, but they can be high in sugar. Juicing the many varieties of vegetables is a great way to lower the sugar content of juice, while increasing the nutritional value. Of course, the grill is a great way to cook vegetables, and many veggies can go into a big salad on those nights when it seems too hot to be in the kitchen. So head out to your local

farmer’s market, pick up what looks fresh and delicious, and do something creative with them. Melissa Webb is a certified yoga instructor that lives in the Geist area. For more information, visit her website www.breathlifeyoga.com.

Geist Half Marathon & 5K Notes Due to high demand, the 5K race field will be expanding this year. In previous years, only 2,500 runners were allowed to participate. To accommodate the larger field, runners will start in waves of approximately 600 people. The first wave will start at 7:30 am. This year’s community garage sale for Geist Harbours neighborhoods will be June 1-2, 2012. Business Spotlight as he talks about his newly opened store.

Tasteful Times 11677 Olio Road Fishers, IN 46037 317-436-8226 www.Tasteful-Times.com

“I love the fact we are a little bit different. We carry a lot of Indiana produced products, but we also have a strong relationship with national vendors, especially Stonewall Kitchen, which produces so many wonderful kitchen and gourmet products and food items. We are hoping to expand this line as the demand grows. We also carry hand-selected wines from the sweetest of the sweet to the biggest and boldest of the wine varietals. We specialize in the small boutique wineries from across the globe and welcome the opportunity to introduce a new wine or two to our customers.”

Tasteful Times:

A Perfect Fit for Geist By J. Andy Murphy

Tasteful Times is a perfect fit for a wonderful Geist gourmet grocery store that brings to the area a splendid selection of regional, national and international wines and food specialities hard to find. And judging by the swift traffic in and out of the store, it delivers the niche goods people are looking for in our Zip Code. Jonathan Sadler, owner of Tasteful Times, beams with pride 16

| a p r i l 2 0 1 2

Sadler is impressive with his extensive knowledge of wines and specialized food products. He had always loved wines so he took the next step and began what would amount to a 7-year study period of the industry, which led to his dream of opening a neighborhood specialty store. As he spoke, I found myself wanting to know more about each and every product sitting in the carefully designed display areas as he enthusiastically walked me through his own personal learning and tasting process. His “a little bit different” includes a Divine Wine Club. The Club allows a customer to join in a new discovery process where they will receive two bottles of wine every month on the 15th. “ It’s a great way to be introduced to new wine and to learn all about wonderful food recipes that will blend with the bouquet,” Sadler adds.

The vendor list is also impressive as it includes at least 10 different food suppliers ranging from jams, Jeni’s ice cream, Tate’s cookies, pizza sauce, gourmet crackers, delicious Salt Sisters rubs and sea salts and, least we not forget, the wildly popular Indiana Smoking Goose meat products, which produces all natural, organic, gluten and casein free, handcrafted meats (salami, fresh sausage, slow cured and smoked meats) raised on family-owned farms. There is also a private label of Tasteful Times spices produced especially for the store.

Tasteful Times owner Jonathan Sadler has created a unique gourmet food store at 116th and Olio Road.

If you are looking for a unique gift that will delight, then look no further than creating your own beautiful custom gift basket with a theme or specific items of choice. No matter what the occasion, this is a pleasing way to celebrate something special. And, with Geist reservoir in our backyard, Tasteful Times offers options for food and drink with three completely customizable Sunset Cruise Packages. Call ahead, pick up or have one delivered to your favorite boat ramp. So if you haven’t discovered Tasteful Times yet, be sure to mark your calendar for Saturday, May 12th as there will be a wine tasting under the tent outside of Tasteful Times from 3 to 6 p.m. It is a great way to kick off Mother’s Day weekend! Tasteful Times is another fine example of a locally-owned business who chose the Geist area. The welcome mat is always out, and we guarantee you a “tasteful time” of shopping and exploring and much more!

Geist’s “Blast on the Bridge” July 4th Celebration

Timeline Announced

By Tom Britt Make plans now for the Geist Lake Coalition’s “Blast on the Bridge” Independence Day celebration, in partnership with the Town of Fishers, taking place on Wednesday, July 4th at the Fall Creek Road bridge over Geist Reservoir. Last year over 10,000 area residents enjoyed an evening of live music, games, food and drink vendors, skydivers, and a boat parade topped off with one of the area’s largest fireworks show simulcast to music at dusk. This year’s celebration begins at 6:00 pm when the Fall Creek bridge is closed to vehicular traffic and transformed into a milelong family-friendly festival. Free e tth he parking is available at Holy Spirit at Geist Catholic Church just south off of Fall Creek Road. Carpooling or parking at family/friend homes nearby is also recommended. Organizers suggest bringing lawn chairs or blankets to sit on during the fireworks show. No carry-in alcoholic beverages are permitted.

Early attendees will be treated to a boat parade decorated to the theme of “Show Your Team Spirit” with recent College Football Hall of Fame inductee and Indianapolis Colts radio commentator Mark Herrmann as the honorary parade marshall. Throughout the evening, a live band will be playing, courtesy of radio partners WJJK 104.5 FM and i94 WRWM. Around 8:00 pm the world-famous Indianapolis 500 Gordon Pipers will march across the bridge playing their bagpipes. As the sun n sets, visitors find their n o o favorite viewing spot along the bridge for a spectacular fireworks show shot from a barge just south of the Geist Marina docks.

While the July 4th celebration is a great community event supported by the Town of Fishers, the true mission of the Geist Lake Coalition is to raise awareness of water quality initiatives and lake safety education around Geist Reservoir. Thanks to private

donations and corporate sponsors like Eddy’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill and Miller Coors/Monarch Beverage, the Blast on the Bridge is the main fundraiser for the Coalition. Proceeds are used to educate residents on the importance of using the proper fertilizers, reducing sediment runoff, controlling blue-green algae blooms, aquatic weed care, stormwater management, and other lake improvement initiatives. The Geist Lake Coalition is a 501c3 nonprofit that welcomes your support, either monetarily or through volunteering. Ready, Set, Pour! Annual Lemonade Day May 19, 2012

By Mindy Fleming The annual and much anticipated Lemonade Day of Greater Indianapolis is scheduled for Saturday, May 19. So if you haven’t already, get signed up, get your Lemonade Day backpack and start building your lemonade stand! For one local youth, Brady Fischer, 8, of Carmel, it was a no-brainer – he’s all signed up and ready to pour! Two years ago, Brady came in 3rd place for ‘best business’ with a total profit of about $250 (after he paid back his loan and paid for all supplies). “It was a fun experience,” explained his father Brandon. “He figured out all the aspects of running a business, including business expenses, materials and paying his employee, Isabella, to help.” Your Family Chiropractic Wellness Center

Brandon is an entrepreneur himself; he owns a business called Anacore, a custom software development company. So like father like son, Brady created a job for himself. Selling 118 glasses of lemonade that day kept the kids busy and happy! Brady, being the good business man that he is, split the tips (which were half of the profit) with his assistant, Isabella. Brady’s dad loaned him around 50 dollars to start the process and buy supplies. He also paid a store owner (a family friend) twenty dollars to ‘rent’ the store front for his lemonade stand. “That first year Brady had to understand how important location was,” said his dad. “Traffic was a big part of our success.” Unfortunately they do not have access to a store front this year. “Our primary goal is to find

a creative way to generate traffic and find a good location,” said Brandon. The core concept of Lemonade Day is for kids to spend some, save some and share some. “Brady donated 100% of his profits to the USO,” said his dad. “He actually picked that charity himself. My son said ‘I’d like to help out the Army’ – well, that translated to the USO. Then half of Brady’s share of the tips went to his savings account and the other half he was able to spend.” This year Brady will donate his profits to Peyton Manning’s Children’s Hospital, once again – this was all Brady’s idea! Lemonade Day is about creating and running your own business as well as learning daily business operations and fundamental philanthropy. It is open to kids of all ages and it’s FREE to sign up! 2010 was the first year of Lemonade Day of Greater Indianapolis in which over 7,400 kids participated. In 2011, the number rose to over 10,000 participants! This year, they are shooting for 15-20,000 eager entrepreneurs. To find out more about Lemonade Day, visit their website at indianapolis.lemonadeday.org. Mindy is a wife and stay-at-home mom of three beautiful children. She also owns Salsa Creative Marketing LLC - an advertising/ marketing company.

Gary Fammartino, a 10-year employee of St. Vincent, was named administrator of the St. Vincent Medical Center Northeast and will oversee the expansion of the Fishers hospital. He will be the official starter of the 5th Anniversary Geist Half Marathon on May 19.

New Administrator to Guide St. Vincent Fishers Expansion By Jane Von Osdol St. Vincent Medical Center Northeast in Fishers has grown up over the last few years. Built in 2008 around the needs of the Fishers community and under the guidance of site director Kim Nealon, the medical center has seen the demands for its services grow along with its burgeoning population. This past February, St. Vincent officials chose Gary Fammartino, a 10-year employee of St. Vincent, to be the administrator for the facility. Kim Nealon will take over the position of chief nurse officer. Both will collaborate on the expansion project scheduled for completion next year. “From the very beginning when we built the outpatient center, we wanted to have an anchor service, which was the freestanding Emergency Department (ED),” Fammartino said. The decision to proceed with the ED was based upon a community survey of 400 homes in Fishers, asking what medical services were important to the community. The results that came back from that survey were tailored to the very services that the medical center currently offers: the first freestanding ED in Indiana, as well as an ambulatory surgery center, an all-digital imaging center, laboratory services, behavioral health (stress center), rehab, women’s services, pediatrics, and a pediatric and adult sleep disorders center.

2013.The expansion will also significantly increase the employee base of the Fishers’ hospital from 120 employees to 320 employees. Of the 40 beds, 30 will be medical/surgical beds and 10 will be labor/delivery/recovery/ postpartum rooms— multipurpose rooms which will enable the woman and her baby to remain in one room for the duration of her hospital stay. Additional plans include spa-like amenities, indoor and outdoor dining, and convenient 24-hour room service for patients. As the newest member of a network of 23 health care entities, St. Vincent Fishers Hospital will have the ability to refer its patients to other St. Vincent locations. Because of that referral base, a huge infrastructure in Fishers is not necessary. For example, the St. VIncent Fishers Hospital will be able to stabilize heart attack patients or extremely injured car accident victims in their own ED and then

Fammartino points out that all along the plan allowed for future expansion of the facility to include inpatient services as the community grew. Shortly after construction started on the medical center, however, the economy crashed. Once the economy picked back up, officials resumed the expansion plans for Fishers, which is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. “We knew at the right time … that having that extension on the inpatient services was going to be a key for this community,” Fammartino said. The 110,000-square-foot tower expansion will focus on women’s and family health and will turn the health center into a 40-bed inpatient hospital. Its new name will be St. Vincent Fishers Hospital, and the scheduled opening is April ap r i l 2 0 1 2 |

transfer them over to one of their other facilities for further care as needed. Serving the community is one of the core tenants of St.Vincent, as evidenced by the wide range of services, classes, and programs they offer to the community. Here’s just a smattering of what you’ll find on their website at www.stvincent.org. • Health and Healing physician presentation series • Weight management programs • Exercise consultations • Certified prenatal and postnatal massage therapy • 338-4-HER, a nurse advice line for answers to women’s health questions • 338-KIDS and kidshealthline.com, a nurse avdivce line for parents • Diabetes care • C.O.A.G clinic for those taking Coumadin and other anticoagulant medications • $49 Heartscan • Sports performance • Sponsor of Geist Half Marathon • Fishers Safety Day Fammartino knows that the key to a successful hospital is inextricably tied up in service—to the community and to its people; a service that reaches mind, body, and spirit. (Right) Surrounded by golf memorabilia and family photos, Fammartino settles into his new office. mission statement of this faith-based hospital reads: Rooted in the loving ministry of Jesus as healer, we commit ourselves to serving all persons with special attention to all those who are poor and vulnerable. Our Catholic health ministry is dedicated to spiritually centered, holistic care, which sustains and improves the health of individuals and communities. We are advocates for a compassionate and just society through our actions and our words. St. Vincent was started 130 years ago by the four Daughters of Charity. Today, their intent is reflected in the three doves of the St. Vincent logo, which represent the three aspects of holistic healing—body, mind, and spirit. Each of the St. Vincent facilities begins every morning with an 8 a.m. prayer time. Every meeting also starts with a spiritual reflection. Leaders at St. Vincent are offered spiritual training such as Lay Spiritual Formation, a two-year program offered by the Aquinas Institute of Theology, which Fammartino is currently taking. Fammartino sees the spiritual aspect of health care just as important as the physical. “Not only is St. Vincent

recognized as a top [health care] organization in the country, but we also emphasize spiritual healing. It’s part of who we are.” Fammartino earned his Bachelor of Science in education in 1978, an associate degree in respiratory science in 1982, and his MBA in finance in 1992 from Youngstown State University in Ohio. He worked for 17 years at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio. He and his wife Suzanne, owner of the Love at First Sight Floral and Design shop in

Ultimately, Fammartino points out that what is important in health care is making sure you serve your community in the best way possible, by efficiently streamlining the services to the community’s needs, thereby avoiding redundancy and saving money. “We’ve done our homework, looked at the demographics, and surveyed our community, and all of that has come together to exactly what we’re putting together here right now,” he said.

Francina’s: New Boutique Aims to Give Back By Pat Carlini Francina, the inspiration behind the name of a new boutique in town, was a woman who never got to work a day in the shop she knew she would adore. Nor, did she have the opportunity to see the Grand Opening of the shop that bears her name. Francina died after a 3-year battle with bladder cancer, two months shy of the opening of her daughter’s boutique in the Kroger complex at 116th & Olio roads. “She was so excited about the shop,” says daughter and owner Pamela Portee. “Clothes brought her a lot of joy and I hope this boutique will do the same for many other women,” said Pamela. Pam Portee, who actually is a cancer survivor herself, picked up the fashion bug from her Mother and studied fashion merchandising in school. She and her family moved to the Geist area over 10-years ago, bringing her Mother 30

with her so she could care for her while she was sick. They began talking about a store and putting all their years of shopping in department stores, boutiques, and consignment shops into one unique idea for a shop; a boutique style shop with new and used under one roof! “I want women to experience shopping in a nice boutique for the clothing that makes them feel good, all at a price they can afford,” says Pamela. “I think that is what makes women smile.” Shoppers may smile over some of the labels found in Francina’s too; Prada, Missook, Gucci and True Religion jeans, all in the new clothing section at the front of the store. The consignment section carries a variety of labels including: Ellen Tracy, Nine West, Moschino, Michael Kors and Coach, all in a wide variety of prices. Pamela says the consignment bags are a bit hit, too. “A Burberry bag and a Louis Vuitton bag sold the day I got

them in the store! say Pamela. The Portees say they will also donate unwanted items that don’t sell in a certain period of time. “The community has been overwhelming to us in their support, says Pamela. “We want to give back by launching Wishing Well Charities in May, where we will donate dollars to different charities each month. Francina’s is open 7 days a week. If you would like to learn more about Francina’s or how you can bring your items in for consignment, give them a call at 317-2885467 or look them up on line at www.facebook.com/ FrancinasFashionsatGeist.

Brothers Steve and Dave Buckner have owned Sundaes Homemade Ice Cream & Java now for 15 years.

Secrets to Sundaes’ Success Exposed By J. Andy Murphy It’s a family owned and operated business. It’s no secret they produce the most delicious homemade ice cream and yogurt found anywhere. But there are a few things that might surprise you about Sundaes. First Secret: Dave Buckner is known in the industry as a master ice cream flavor-mixer. If you have a taste for chocolate raisins or as the owner of Sweetie’s in Broadripple requested, a special Red Velvet ice cream to match their wildly popular cake, Master Dave can produce it right down to the “Yummy, this is good” taste bud delight. Dave’s freshly home-made ice cream mix is created in the secret mixing room beyond the ice cream counter, and Sundaes has a propriety mixed recipe that is part of the success and separates their ice-cream from others. They use all natural products such as in their bourbonvanilla, which comes from Madagascar. Vanilla can cost a lot of money, about $90 a gallon. Imitation vanilla runs about $17 per gallon. “We buy the best we can and then 34

worry about the cost later. It’s all about producing a super flavor that brings your customers back for more,” Dave says. Recently, when creating a brand new banana/graham cracker flavor, Dave peeled about 50 pounds of bananas before he got it right. I tasted it and it was amazing! It was like eating a fresh banana cream pie. Throughout the day, Dave whips up about 10 gallons of ice cream every 15 minutes. It’s immediately transferred to a freezer that’s kept at 30 degrees below zero. It’s flash frozen to prevent ice crystals from forming. Second Secret: Sundaes sells to restaurants, ice cream dip-shops, country clubs, hotels and caters. “Actually, we sell ice cream to anyone who wants ice cream,” said Miera (Dave’s lovely wife) with a contagious laugh that would brighten anyone’s day. So the next time you order ice cream out, you might very well be eating Sundaes special brand. And, if the ice cream is not-so-good, go ahead and tell them about Sundaes.

Third Secret: Frozen yogurt. Sundaes was making frozen yogurt before all the other yogurt stores popped up. Currently, they offer multiple flavors, 6 to 10 popular ones and new recipes are always in development in this genre of deliciousness.

they are smiling because ice cream is the topping on the cake. It’s a great business and we’ve made lots of friends. We have families who when they were younger came in for ice cream treats with their parents and now they are bringing in their own kids!”

Fourth Secret: They import green coffe beans from all over the world and roast and flavor their own coffee (again in the secret area out back of the store, which is in operation all year long).

P.S. Some secrets are too good not to share!

Steve Buckner, Dave’s brother and co-owner of Sundaes, stated they made the decision to roast their own so they could once again sell the highest quality of coffee. You need to roast it fresh from the green beans. And let me tell you, green coffee beans look like peas used to make pea soup. The roasting process turns the beans a rich brown color. They buy their beans from Africa, Hawaii, Brazil, Kenya, Guatemala. Anywhere that grows beans around the equator might very well in end up in your coffee cup!

Solutions for Life’s Transitions

Sundaes also sells whole roasted beans to the public if you want to brew your own at home. They also flavor the beans; blueberry, hazelnut, cookie doodle and so it goes up to 20 different flavors that are within their speciality. You can buy the roasted coffee by the pound or the ounce. In the store, they can make you a cup of coffer from a wonderful menu of specially brewed roasted beans and whip up favorites such as: Cappucino/ Latte, flavored Lattee Mocha White Mocha, Espresso shake, Hot chocolate or Hot caramel in a jiffy. Fifth Not-So-Much-A-Secret: Sundaes is very community involved. They are sponsors of charities, churches, schools, neighborhood festivals and the Indianapolis Sailing Club Annual fundraiser to name just a few. When asked what they liked most about operating a neigborhood ice cream business, Dave, Miera and Steve all agreed: “It is a happy place to be. Our customers love our product and when they come in to the store

Country Club Chef resigned and they were looking for a new Chef. After a conversation with her neighbor, an Indian lake Club member, Chef Suzanne met with club officers and they came up with a recipe for success. Chef Suzanne will take over the kitchen at Indian Lake with her catering team working in the morning for corporate lunches and other parties, then concentrating on lunches and dinners for club members during golf outings. “It is a win, win for all,” says Club President Todd Bullerdick. “We get the fresh, delicious cuisine of Chef Suzanne while she continues to conduct her catering business from the kitchen. She has a lot of freedom here with the menu and rearranging the kitchen so it works for her.”

Chef Suzanne Cooks Up a New Gig By Pat Carlini

So how will the once Executive Chef of the Fox Pub & Grill and former Frazier’s Gourmet Food instructor fit into one of the oldest private clubs in the Indianapolis area at Geist? Very carefully! Some members wasted no time asking her if she is taking their favorites off the menu.

The well-known Geist area cook and caterer, Chef Suzanne, has a new gig in town!

“There were comfort foods such as fried chicken, meatloaf and a favorite pasta with alfredo sauce,” says Suzanne. “I know they want to keep those items. I will “tweak” them a little just enough to make them a litte healthier.”

Chef Suzanne Rockwell has taken on another role in her quest to help hungry Hoosiers find delicious healthy cuisine. She is the new Chef at Indian Lake Country Club.

Her savory scallop appetizer on a bed of greens has already been a big hit! Does all of the this mean double-duty for the already busy Chef on the go?

“I’m very excited” says Chef Suzanne.” “I’m moving the kitchen around the way I want it, and I have some exciting new dishes to introduce to my new friends.”

“No, I just have to be more organized,” laughs Suzanne. “However, it does make for a great excuse to put my feet up when I get home, and let my husband do the cooking!

The kitchen was a big part of Suzanne’s new deal. Her lease was up for the kitchen at the Sterrett Center in Lawrence where she prepared her catering menu and corporate lunches for several years. At about the same time, the Indian Lake

The family business of the Fort Grille in Fortville, owned by the Dowless family (left to right) Michele, Rachel, James, Cameron and Caleb.

Family, Culinary Masterpieces at the Heart of the Fort Grille Photos, Video and Story by Tom Britt

In a small, simple building on the outskirts of Fortville is perhaps one of the finest restaurant destinations in the Geist area. The Fort Grille, the last stop on your left as you leave Fortville headed towards Pendleton, has quickly become a favorite of locals and the word is spreading. “I grew up working in Baltimore in our family’s 250-seat supper club,” said head chef and owner James Dowless. “I was only 14 when I started as a busboy in the back, learning the kitchen from the ground up. My uncle always wanted me to be a bartender or work the front of the house, but I fell in love with cooking and wanted to stay in the kitchen.” While in college, Dowless met his now wife Michele, a salad station employee at an O’Toole’s restaurant. He continued his culinary career and Michele began working for Eli Lilly & Company as a cancer researcher which landed them in Durham, North Carolina. 42

Life was going along great in 2004, the Dowlesses were finishing up the bulding of their dream home and Michele had just given birth to their third child, Rachel. Then, a chain of events occurred that brought the Dowlesses to Indianapolis. Within a few weeks of Michele learning that Eli Lilly was closing the Research Triangle Park, James began having severe headaches. “I could have taken a severance package, but we weren’t sure what was wrong with James,” explained Michele. They soon found out that the headaches were from a brain tumor and would be removed at Duke University Hospital. After the surgery, Michele accepted a transfer to the Eli Lilly campus in downtown Indianapolis and the family moved to the northeast end of Geist Reservoir. A few years later, another brain tumor surfaced and James again faced a tricky surgery to have it removed. After he

recovered, his itch to get back into the kitchen resulted in the purchase of a struggling restaurant called Robbie’s in Fortville which the Dowlesses reopened in May 2011 as the Fort Grille. “I just decided I’m not going to live in fear,” said James about his recurrent brain tumors. “I want to do what I love to do.” The Fort Grille is a true family restaurant. While James runs the kitchen in the back, Michele works the front in the evenings and prepares most of the homemade desserts. Occasionally you’ll see one of them leave out the back door to pick up their sons Caleb and Cameron from lacrosse practice or you’ll spot their youngest, Rachel, waiting tables.

Fried green tomatoes, a yummy appetizer.

Walking into the Fort Grille, I felt like I was walking into a diner along Route 66 somewhere in Missouri. Two waist-high counters with bar stools on the right, a row of newly upholstered booths on the left. In the rear of the restaurant, a large open room with more free-standing tables for seating. The restaurant is decorated very simply with nods to the local railroad history and works by a local artist. Nothing out of the ordinary. However, when our teenaged waitress handed us our menu, we realized this was no ordinary diner. The Fort Grille’s “eclectic” menu features entrees like the Veal Saltimbocca, Chicken Marsala, and a family favorite of Shrimp ‘n Grits. To round out the menu, they also carry a broad range of moderately priced sandwiches, salads, soups, and a $.99 kids menu. For our visit, Jeanne and I sampled the Fried Green Tomatoes, Broccoli Cheddar soup, and then shared the daily special, Baked Campanelle. Neither of us have ever tried fried green tomatoes and we were both impressed with not only the taste, but the presentation, served on greens with a balsamic vinaigrette, pesto and goat cheese drizzle. The baked campanelle was amazing, made very rich and creamy with gorgonzola cheese. I thought I could eat it all but realized quickly a take home box was in order. Michele wouldn’t let us leave without a ap r i l 2 0 1 2 |

dessert, so we tried the mint chocolate cheesecake which featured small bits of York Peppermint Patties on top. Simply amazing. “We make everything homemade,” says James as he points back to the bustling kitchen. “Even the bread we serve is homemade. We take the crumbs from the bread and use it for breading on our fried green tomatoes. You can taste the difference.” Go online to www.atGeist.com to watch a video interview with Michele and James Dowless inside the Fort Grille. (Below) The Fort Grille is a short drive from Geist Reservoir.

The Fort Grille closes each night at 9:00 pm and is open for lunch at 11:00 am Monday through Saturday, serving brunch only on Saturday mornings starting at 10:00 am. My recommendation is to pay a visit for dinner so you can have the full experience with appetizers, entree, and a homemade dessert. To see their full menu, visit www.FortGrille.com. If you are looking for a true family restaurant with gourmet food, take the 10 minute drive east to Fortville and pay the Dowlesses a visit. Their address is 901 E. Broadway Street, Fortville, IN. You’ll quickly become part of their growing fan base of loyal customers.

escorted to a booth in an interior room of one very romantic and completely inappropriate fondue restaurant. Now I’ve had fondue a number of times in my life, and I think it’s a great meal for socializing with friends or lingering with someone you know and love — a relaxing cook-as-you-chat evening — the operative word being RELAXING. Unless, of course, you find yourself on a first date with Bob. We ordered a steak and vegetable fondue combination and, as our server checked the temperature of the pot of broth sitting over the heating unit in the center of our table, she ran through her typical spiel. “It takes about 3 minutes for the meat to cook all the way through. The vegetables will take less time depending on how crisp you like them. Enjoy!” I’ve heard of a 3-minute egg, but about two seconds after our server walked away, I was introduced to OCD Bob, or as I’ve come to refer to him, “the 3-minute man.” Because he whipped out his BlackBerry, set its timer to go off at 3-minute intervals and quickly skewered his first piece of meat with his fondue fork and plunged it into the boiling broth, his eyes darting from the phone to the fondue pot and back again.

By Queenie Bishop

I was a little nonplussed. Being in my early 40s, I remember what it was like to go on a date without an electronic third wheel. And while I have no desire to relive my 20s, I wouldn’t mind — I dare say I even look forward to — the occasional evening sans cell phones.

While first dates should always occur in a public place (no exceptions), I wouldn’t recommend a fondue restaurant, particularly not one with intimate booths and mood lighting. And definitely not with someone who is already married — to his BlackBerry®.

Then I thought maybe he couldn’t see well enough in the dim lighting to tell if his meat was done, so I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, collected my thoughts, took a slow, deep breath, and dove into the obligatory first-date chitchat.

Regrettably, as you may have surmised, I found myself in just such a situation. I probably should have said, “Bob, we don’t know each other well enough yet,” because, let’s face it, ambience like that is lost on a first date. A lady doesn’t really want to go to a romantic restaurant with a near stranger, and the chances of me ending up canoodling with said near stranger in a dark corner of said romantic restaurant our first time out are slim to none. Yes, I should have said, “Perhaps a coffee house might be a better choice.” And I would have. I absolutely would have had Bob not called at 7 a.m. on a Saturday morning to set the time and place. It was difficult enough to feel around for a scrap piece of paper and a pen and scribble the information down with my eyes closed. An intelligent sentence was not an option. So fast-forward 12 hours, and Bob and I were 48

“I used to eat fondue a lot when I was a kid,” I said. “Of course, we cooked our meat in oil back then before everyone was so conscious of cholesterol and fat intake. And I have to say…” DING! Quick like a rabbit Bob extracted his first piece of meat with one hand while dropping piece number two in with the other. “You want to use my timer?” he asked, his eyes adding me to their rotation, racing from fondue pot, to me, to the BlackBerry screen glowing eerily in the dark as it ticked off the seconds. His rapid eye movement was starting to make me dizzy, so

I looked down at my plate. “No thanks,” I said. “I think I’ll just wing it.” I think I smiled. It might have looked more like a grimace from Bob’s side of the table. I waited for him to say something else, but he was intent on readying his next piece of steak for cooking.

— should be the front-runner for Mr. Basketball in 2013. Make that 8 days younger than Irwin, a Michigan recruit who averaged 17-plus points this past season. Gary’s birthday is in September. He will turn 18 as he starts his collegiate career at Michigan State in East Lansing. “Yes, Gary is young for his grade. When he started school, we lived in Nashville, Tenn. The cutoff there was you had to be 5 by the end of September. His birthday is September 14 (1994). So he was 4 years old when he started school,’’ said his mother, Joy (Holmes) Harris, a first-team Kodak All-American when she played basketball at Purdue. “We moved to Fishers when he was going into the 2nd grade. We briefly thought about having him repeat the 1st grade again here in Indiana, but his Tennessee teacher was highly against it because he was doing so well academically.” Then she said with a chuckle: “Then of course . . . there were thoughts of holding him back (on my part only) just before senior night this year.”

Indiana’s Youngest Mr. Basketball is Just a Kid at Heart Story By Mark Morrow Photos by Steve Risley Hamilton Southeastern High School’s Gary Harris, the fourth student-athlete to represent Hamilton County as the recipient of Indiana’s Mr. Basketball award, the state’s highest individual basketball honor, is believed to be the youngest ever to don that No. 1 jersey. He’s only 17 years old. And he’s already an All-American. “Yeah, I was really surprised when 50

he told me how young he was. I can’t imagine anyone who was any younger than he is,’’ said Charlie Hall, Game Director for the Indiana All-Stars. But age aside, wow . . . what a talent. What a force at both ends of the floor. What a warrior. The 6-foot-5 Harris is younger than 6-7 Zak Irwin, the school’s other basketball superstar who could — and arguably | a p r i l 2 0 1 2

Harris, who is a McDonald’s AllAmerican, and the Indiana Gatorade High School Player of the Year for the 2011-12 season, ranked No. 11 nationally by Scout.com in the 2012 class. He also was a member of the USA Junior Select Team that recently played the World Team in Portland, Oregon. He ended his high school career as Southeastern’s all-time scoring leader. He scored 612 points (25.4 points per game) this past season, finishing with 1,552 career points. That total puts him No. 7 on the all-time County scoring list. When reflecting back on Harris, coach Brian Satterfield touched on the age factor . . . “Just imagine if we had him back next year . . .’’ Yeah, one can only imagine how good

Southeastern would be if Harris was back in those Royals colors, alongside Irwin. The Royals were pretty good this past season, winning a school record 22 games, and they ranked No. 1 in the final Class 4A state polls, before falling to eventual Class 4A state champion Carmel in the sectional final. Satterfield, who marveled over his star’s unselfishness and his teamfirst approach, will certainly miss the presence of Gary Harris as the extraordinary athlete he is, and more importantly as the way he undoubtedly developed as a person through his high school years. So will the younger kids who’ve been seen constantly seeking autographs from their “rock star’’ after basketball games. There have been many Gary Harris moments throughout his career in both football and basketball.

“You’ve been out here signing autographs for quite a while now, don’t you get tired? he was asked. “Nah, he said. “. . . It’s fun. I like talking to the kids . . . I really do. We’re having a good time. His mother, for one, isn’t surprised about the way he is with young kids. “When Gary attended daycare in Nashville, the (NFL) Titans practice facility was directly behind the playground. The Titan players would come up to the fence and give the kids footballs, wrist bands and talk to the kids. she said. “Gary loved every moment of it. Those football players would make those kids day anytime they came up to that fence. Gary is still a diehard Titans fan to this day. I think he remembers how that made him feel and the impact it had, so that’s why I think it’s so easy for him to embrace the kids and take time out for them. Her son is humble, soft-spoken, respects adults, loves his teammates, and obviously relates well to kids.

Harris with his father Gary Sr. and mother, Joy. where both teams left it all on the floor, in a game HSE won by 3 points, two young boys waited in line to get Gary’s autograph. They were wearing “Red Fishers Tigers shirts. That says a lot about the impression Gary Harris left on so many kids. So maybe he is a “rock star — and his music is dribbling basketballs.

That’s Gary Harris, a mild-mannered Superman on the football field and on the basketball court, where he was first-team all-state in both sports, and a giant in the hearts of those who know him best. If he doesn’t take Michigan State by storm, it won’t be from lack of trying. But experiencing his gentle side, and how he conducted himself with the kids was really cool, something special. It was extremely extraordinary for someone so young. He genuinely enjoyed taking time for them all. But hey, what would you expect? He’s pretty much still just a kid himself. Mark Morrow owns and operates Hamilton County Sports Daily (www.hcsportsdaily.com), the only allsports website in Hamilton County.

Harris was asked by a media member how many autographs he had signed. “Oh, I don’t know, a few, I guess, he said, smiling while coming across as being a little bashful.

Lawrence Needs Your Input The City of Lawrence will soon have a new logo and brand identity. In February, key City officials and community members held a 2-hour brainstorming session led by Tom Britt of atGeist. com and Keriann Rich of Hothouse PR. Results from that session were put into a questionnaire format and put online for the entire community to participate in. “We are hoping to get as many Lawrence residents as possible to give us their input,” said Dean Jessup, Mayor for the City of Lawrence.

Window Clings Available

To participate, residents are encouraged to visit www. atLawrence.com and click on the “Survey” link. The survey consists of 10 questions, the last of which is open-ended to give residents an opportunity to chime in on any subject they like. Deadline for online submissions is May 31, 2012.

If your retail business has signed up for the Townies Super Local App, send Tom Britt (tom@atGeist.com) an email to get free window clings for your place of business to promote more check-ins! Window clings are 4.5” x 4.5” and also come in a sticker format for cash registers or point of sale systems.

Barriers and distractions permeate our daily schedules in this fast paced, ever-changing society. From working professionals to busy parents, all of us have roadblocks that seem to stand in the way of our personal fitness. Fortunately, there are some encouraging and simple methods you can implement to battle these roadblocks. I consider these methods essential to any sustainable and effective fitness program.

Manage Your Time The primary advantage of successful time management lies in maximizing efficiency. Whether you train for fifteen minutes or one hour, make the most out of the time you have allotted. Much like anything in daily life, from business meetings to family events, your exercise session is more likely to be completed if you consider it an actual appointment. So, if you have an appointment book, go ahead and reserve an exercise time. It is unrealistic to think life will never get in the way of exercise, but proper time management greatly improves a person’s compliance. As a Personal Trainer for both working professionals and busy parents, I encounter this reality on a daily basis. If you are a working professional on the road and unable to meet at your fitness center, a quick bodyweight workout or hotel gym workout overrides not exercising at all. Similarly, if you are a busy parent at your child’s practice or school event, try to sneak a brisk walk or some bodyweight exercise.

Ensure Accountability

Fitness Tips for the Busy Adult By Jimmy Girot III

In terms of sustaining a personal fitness plan, one of the best ways to ensure accountability is to partner with someone who shares the same vision. This partner could be a personal trainer at your fitness center, friend, co-worker, spouse, or other family member, the possibilities are extensive. People are more likely to adhere to a program if someone else is depending on them or holding them accountable. This notion transcends across most aspects of life. There are also various online resources such as forums and social media

Geist Business Networking: May 10

Record Your Routine For a person lacking considerable time, there is no room for guesswork in the fitness program. This tip is two: The busy adult should record both daily nutrition and daily exercise. If you are not assessing the program then you are guessing and this is a recipe for regression or mediocrity. Record what you eat and how much you eat. Record what exercises you perform and how many you do. The depth of description in your recordings is trivial as long as you are able to sustain and develop the system.

Join us for a business after hours networking event at Ameriana Bank. Drinks and food provided, no admission charge, just bring plenty of business cards! Also, be the first to see the 2012 5th Anniversary Geist Half Marathon & 5K Pace Car, compliments of Stanley Chevrolet in McCordsville. To RSVP, join “Indy’s Networking Hub” www.TownePost.com and join the “Geist Business Networking” group.

Eliminate Excuses Many barriers are imagined; that is, we unconsciously excuse ourselves from exercise and healthy lifestyles. Logical fallacies aside, we will never find time to exercise, but we must make time. Being social, working, and spending time with family are all incredibly important to a person’s wellbeing, but these things do not supersede the need for exercise or smart dietary choices. Without personal health, a person’s ability to socialize, work, or spend time with family would be limited. I encourage you to make time for exercise in your busy schedule, as your personal health and fitness likely affect more than just yourself.

Female Problems By Dick Wolfsie The good people at the Social Security Administration are partly responsible for my feeling financially secure, but they have done a lousy job at making me feel secure socially. Hey, isn’t that what the name says? My story begins with an actual letter I received this week from my supplemental Medicare provider… Dear Richard Wolfsie Our records show that the gender we have for you doesn’t match the information received from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid. To have your gender corrected, please contact your local Social Security Office.

I could see this wasn’t starting out very well. I explained to Art the confusion that had arisen but I tried talking with a deeper voice, hoping that might move the conversation along in the right direction. At first Art thought his office had a software problem, as opposed to my having…I guess what you’d call a hardware problem, but he was clearly stumped by how to fix this dilemma. “This is a new one for me, Wolfsie. By the way, mind if I just call you Wolfsie? At least until we satisfactorily address this problem? Not sure I can fix this with a simple keystroke. This may require a face-to-face meeting.” I was uncomfortable with that possibility. I’m not a rugged looking guy. I even have some soft features. I tried to talk him out of it. “Look, how about an eyewitness report. Can you take my wife’s word for it? Or I can have the guys from the gym sign an affidavit. Or maybe the security agents at the airport could give you a buzz. Those guys have seen it all.”

I dialed immediately, hoping to reach a real person who could look into everything without having to actually look at anything, if you know what I mean. After I answered a few automated questions, a man who identified himself as Art came on the phone and offered to assist me. I told him my last name and Social Security number.

I’m very sorry, but we do have our standard operating procedures,” said Art.

“Yes, we have you on file. What can I do for you, Ma’am?”

“Are you on Medicare?” Art asked.

The term “operating procedures” really creeped me out. This seemed an extreme way to get all the information to match.

“Yes, for the past several months.”

We had been on the phone almost an hour when Art said he needed to check one more thing. He promised he’d return in a few seconds. I held for another five minutes but he never came back on the line. He just kept me hanging.

“Which parts?” “Gee whiz, you don’t have a record of those parts, either? There must be some explanation for all this.”

Isn’t that just like a man?

”Wolfsie, maybe the computer read your first name as being either a man’s or a woman’s—thus the confusion.”

Dick Wolfsie is a 20-year veteran of WISHTV’s Daybreak and authored 12 books, including Mornings with Barney and his best seller Indiana Curiosities, now in its third edition. www.Wolfsie.com

“You must be right, Art. Who doesn’t have a niece or a grandmother named Richard?” “I need to put you on hold again, Wolfsie. Sorry to make you wait.” “No problem. I’ll pass the time flipping through Bride magazine.” Moments later… “It looks to me, Wolfsie, that we have you officially listed as a man all your life, but for some reason you became a woman in our system when you signed up for Medicare. That was effective March 2, 2012. “Well, if it’s so effective, why didn’t I get a free dirty martini during Cougar Happy Hour at Harry & Izzy’s? Come to think of it, I could have hit from the ladies tee in Sunday’s golf choose-up.
