Geist Lake Coalition Steps Up to Treat Reservoir for Milfoil | Tom Britt

Local builders agree, the best option for your next home might just be a new home at Geist. Find out why new construction may be the right choice for you.

Cal Burleson’s Called Shot | Neal G. Moore Long-time Fishers resident Cal Burleson started working for the Indianapolis Indians 39 years ago in the box oďŹƒce. Over the years, Burleson rose through the ranks as business manager, marketing manager, assistant general manager, and in the fall of 1997 was named general manager.

Urban deer are creating problems at Geist. They are becoming so accustomed to living around people they are losing their natural fear. Anderson is proposing a $350 million Mounds Lake Reservoir about 200 acres larger than Geist Reservoir. If constructed, it would mean the end of the Mounds Mall and other local landmarks.

As Geist Reservoir turns 80 years old, the signs of aging are becoming more pronounced. The proliferation of invasive Eurasian milfoil prompted the Geist Lake Coalition to act, and act quick. AUGUST 2013

Time marches on | Gina Kammerer The beginning of a new school year marks yet another year of growth – not only for our children, but parents as well. A new school year can be viewed as comparable to our New Year’s traditions of starting over, making resolutions, and pledging renewal – again, both for children and parents. Each passing year places more expectations on our children, and brings less parental control. This can often lend itself to some form of anxiety, mixed with joy. Our children lavish in the excitement of purchasing new school supplies, backpacks, lunch boxes, and school clothes, while parents experience the overwhelming financial weight of school supplies, lunch money, tuition, and book rental fees. As parents, we feel a sense of pride in sending our children to new classrooms with new teachers, and we are hopeful that they will find our children to be just as special. Back-to-school anxiety for kids comes in the form of questions such as, “Will any of my friends be in my class”, “Will my teacher be nice”, “Will I know how to get to my classroom, the cafeteria, or the restroom”, and “Will I be able to unlock my locker?”

Just like New Year’s, the beginning of a new school year forces us to reflect on the reality that our children are growing up, maturing, and becoming more independent which, in turn, means that we as parents are getting older, are relinquishing more independence to our children, and, quite possibly, no longer continue to be the star of our children’s show. This is what we strive for as parents, molding these human beings into productive citizens. We encourage their independence, right? Then why does the beginning of a new school year cause such emotional chaos, joy and jitters? It’s about growth, change, the unknown and time. Growth is positive, and is what we all want and need for our children and ourselves. But, with growth comes change which can cause jitters and anxiety. The unknown creates fear, and time is marching on. The beginning of school comes every year like clockwork. Embrace the chance to start anew. Refresh and create opportunities for reflection and resolution. Happy New School Year to you! Gina received her bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work from IUPUI and is a licensed social worker in the state of Indiana with a focus on children and families. Gina lives in the Geist area with her husband, son and daughter.

He led the decorated boats through the Geist coves and shoreline leading up to the judging at the Fall Creek Road bridge. Scott Campbell of Scott B. Campbell Custom Homes, Inc. says the biggest advantage of building a new home is getting “the exact features you want.”

ou’re in the market to purchase a home, and you’ve targeted a few desirable neighborhoods in your search. Your realtor shows you a home, but your response is often the same. You’d consider the existing home if only it had a better kitchen, the shiny brass features were antiqued bronze, and the hall closet leading from the garage was a functional mudroom. If your list of changes expands with every offering your realtor presents, you may want to consider building a new home. One of the most obvious advantages of building a custom home is the ability to design every aspect of the house to fit your needs and wants. “You get the exact floor plan you want, you get the exact exteriors, you get the exact features you want when you purchase a custom home,” said Scott Campbell, president of Scott B. Campbell Custom Homes, Inc. Campbell also encourages those who are thinking of purchasing an existing property and renovating to consider what they’re not seeing when calculating a budget. “With a new home, you know the costs up front; with a remodel or a renovation, you don’t know what the hidden costs will be. Anything unexpected could add substantially to your cost,” said Campbell.

In fact, maintenance on existing homes tends to be deferred over many years and at a certain point, everything may break at once or need replacing. According to data from the 2009 American Housing Survey (AHS), for routine maintenance expenses on existing homes, 26 percent of all homeowners spent $100 or more a month on various upkeep costs. In contrast, only 11 percent of owners of newly-constructed homes spent this amount. In fact, 73 percent of new homeowners spent less than $25 a month on routine maintenance costs.

“Don’t get too caught up in the ‘good deal’ that you may get with a foreclosure before you know what kind of risk you will be assuming.” When you build a home, you eliminate this risk completely,” said Rob Bussell, realtor and vice president of marketing and sales at The Marina Limited Partnership. Randy Bennett and his family have lived in the Cambridge neighborhood for 14 years and are in the process of building their third home. “We upsized in Cambridge, and we’re now downsizing to a ranch home with greater outdoor entertaining space overlooking the water,” said Bennett. Bennett and his family love both the active lifestyle and calming serenity that come with being on the water – and in Central Indiana, bodies of water are hard to find. “When you’re building a home, you get 100 percent of what you want, but

Randy Bennett has lived in Cambridge for 14 years in two different homes. He and his family are building their third home. when you buy an existing home you get someone else’s ‘dream home,’” added Bennett.

TOWNEPOST RELAUNCHES ITS TOWNIES APP The new Townies Super Local App (available now for download) was designed to further connect “Townies” (that would be you) with local businesses. Here’s how it works: Smartphone users (Apple or Android) download the Townies app, sign in using their free TownePost.com account, and are then able to check-in at local retailers and obtain special discounts or offers. Check-ins appear on TownePost.com and you can share your Facebook and/or Twitter accounts. Local businesses win in many ways: • Local offers encourage repeat customers • Check-ins create online social traffic and awareness • Real-time, paperless offers reduce the need for costly direct mail or newspaper couponing • Mapping feature shows your offers to Townies in close proximity to your retail location Townies Super Local App is powered by TownePost. com, Indy’s Networking Hub. In an effort to promote locally-owned businesses, TownePost.com provides a free members-only portal that allows small business owners the ability to post to their free blog, upcoming events, photos, videos, and share updates through Facebook and Twitter. In addition, a free business directory, groups, and forums allows for an ongoing dialogue with locals and your business. Features available through the mobile app include: • Offers, time-sensitive coupons, and discounts redeemable on location

• Yelp reviews, Open-table reservations, website links, phone numbers, and other information for each business • Push notifications • Banner advertising Like TownePost.com, the Townies Super Local App shares many of the same features: • Detailed information on featured Indianapolis-area events • Post photos from your smart phone • Read news feeds from the TownePost.com network • Earn points for activity which can be redeemed for local gift cards

After installation, you’ll need to sign up for TownePost.com to begin check-in with local retailers, share reviews, post photos, or get the latest news feeds from the TownePost.com network of hyper local websites! Townies encourages all users to check-in to Indianapolis-area restaurants, bars, and retailers to support your local merchants. For checking in, you’ll be given a special discount or promo. Share your check-in on Twitter or Facebook to give your local spots even more love! The Townies Super Local App will launch in beta in August, and is looking to partner with a small number of local retail businesses. Townies is willing to offer and extended testing period free of charge for those willing to participate!

Oh Deer!

Urban Deer at Geist Creating Problems

Photo | Kim Shurig | Kathi Moore s it Bambi, or is it a neighborhood nuisance/public policy problem yet to be resolved? Opinions run the gamut about the deer we see frequently in our neighborhoods and crossing our roadways. The Geist area is representative of many communities across the country experiencing the burgeoning problem of “urban deer” – an influx of deer into suburban backyards. “They have become so acclimated to living around people, they lose their natural fear,” explained Chad Stewart, deer management biologist, Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR). “In their natural habitat, deer would normally run from you.”

I

Geist_August_2013.indd 20

Stewart noted that many people are somewhat fascinated by the amazing experience of seeing these beautiful creatures up close and personal. But at what point is it too much? At what point does it reach people’s tolerance level? Flattened and munched-upon landscaping, vegetable garden buffets, family pets who roll in deer feces – all tend to wear upon our love of Bambi and his relatives. The good news is deer are generally disease-free and nonaggressive. There are, however, certain times of the year we should be more wary of them. May and June are when fawns appear and the mother becomes highly protective, with some rare instances of attacking small dogs. Late October and early November are the ‘rut’ season when more than 30-40 percent of deer-vehicle collisions occur annually. During this deer mating season, according to Stewart, “they go crazy”, and don’t pay attention to cars, etc., and is the time

newsletter | august 2013

of year for motorists to be particularly watchful for them. Why do we have so many deer? Records indicate very high levels in Indiana – more today than in past decades – and a very high density in urban areas. The reason is there are no real predators. Yes, there is the occasional coyote or domestic dog who will take fawns, and certainly deervehicle collisions account for some loss, but the primary deer predators are hunters which, of course, we don’t have in urban areas. There are small areas where the DNR authorizes limited deer hunts. At Ft. Harrison State Park, licensed archery hunters are allowed to hunt four days in November and December. Last year, 64 deer were taken, up from 46 in 2011. “Deer hide very well,” said Stewart, so those numbers aren’t a significant percentage of the actual population. Varying opinions about deer in populous neighborhoods create a sticky issue that can put policy makers at odds. Reducing the herd is something many people oppose. The DNR does not trap and relocate deer because it is a nearly impossible task. Contraception is a consideration that, in theory, could work, but in practice would require capturing and spaying 80 percent of females every year – not a longterm solution. Another solution are firearm hunts which almost always are controversial.

Nancy Lockhart regularly sees this in her backyard. So, Bambi lives near you. There are steps you can take to keep the deer in check. Experts urge that you not feed the deer. Put fences around your gardens or spread dog hair or Irish Spring soap or coyote urine (yes, you really can buy this) to protect plants. And, have your camera ready for some beautiful nature shots. Kathi Moore, a career marketer and public relations director, has a natural curiosity that leads her in many different directions and helps to provide ideas for her writing. She and her husband have 3 children, 3 dogs and 3 cats.

DONUT WARS: ROUND 3 Daylight at the Corner of 116th and Olio Road

| Tom Britt Our third round in the Donut Wars took us to Daylight Donuts on the busy northwest corner of 116th Street and Olio Rd. Daylight fights in the super heavyweight division with few takers willing to compare to their 13-donut “monster donut.” Owner Bradd Morse spent 18 years in the retail supplement and vitamins business, deciding to cross over to the other side three years ago and open the second Daylight Donuts in the central Indiana area. “I love a business where everyone comes in happy,” Morse said while talking about his new life in the donut world. “The first time one of our employees came back and said someone Tom Britt with GeistTV talks to Daylight Donuts owner Bradd Morse, who went from selling vitamins wanted to speak with the manager, I was and supplements to donut maker. worried that a complaint was headed my stvincent.org/medicalgroup way. Fortunately, they just wanted to thank me for the delicious donuts. I wasn’t used to that.” During our visit, Sam Lukomski stopped by with his mom and sister, kicking off his 8th birthday with his favorite local donuts. Following behind was Chris Collins with his

Chris gives Daylight his vote, saying “The thing that sets this place apart is their freshness.” Jensen Lewis was enjoying a Long John with her family as they talked about an upcoming vacation to Florida in July. Ah, the happier mood and times enjoyed at a donut shop. Working behind the counter, Morse has enlisted his two sons in the family business. Oldest son Max – at least a head taller than his dad – was busy taking orders and keeping the shelves stocked all morning. Seventh grader, Alex, works occasionally helping dad with paperwork and organizing receipts. If you didn’t know it, you’d swear the rest of the staff was family as well given the friendly smiles and occasional joking around with regulars. As for the taste and quality of the donuts, our judges definitely noticed a difference from the previous two rounds. Morse touted the potato flour as giving them an advantage over other donut shops. Simply put, “It just has better flavor” according to him. Daylight Donuts is open seven days a week from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., except on Sundays when they close at 6:00 p.m. For more information, or to place advance orders, visit www.daylightdonutsfishers.com.

Max Morse, son of owner Bradd Morse, holds up a local creation: the “Monster Donut”. This 13-donut weight donut is popular for birthday or office parties.

Donut Wars: Round 4 Knock-Out Blow Dealt at Jack’s Donuts in Saxony their retail end cap on 131st Street.

morning. However, duty called.

Our judges had to call the fight in the fourth round of the Donut Wars. With sugar levels and donut love at an alltime high, Jack’s Donuts at Saxony in Fishers delivered a potential knock-out blow that put the quest for the ultimate donut in Geist into a “too close to call” category.

Jack’s Donuts in New Castle is an institution, boasting more than 50 years in business. Their first franchisee in Saxony probably has the most buzz of any of the four contenders for the Sugar Cup (that’s the name we came up with for the Geist Jewelers trophy that we’ll be awarding next week). To clarify, the “buzz” is not only from the glazing on their wide variety of donut creations, but also from the word-ofmouth advertising they receive every time Saxony hosts a farmer’s market, outdoor movie or concert just behind

After a long July 4th celebration on the Geist Lake Coalition’s Blast on the Bridge, the thought of fresh donuts from the area’s newest donut shop was the only thing motivating me this

Tanglewood resident and former Indiana Weslyan University collegiate basketball player Angie BoneDowns could not be happier with the reception they’ve received since opening February 28. “In my little hometown, we had a small donut shop named Vogul’s that closed when the owners decided to retire. When I met my husband (from New Castle), he told me I had to try Jack’s,” recalled Bone-Downs. “I loved their donuts and found out that they were thinking of franchising, so the rest is history.” Why is Jack’s Donuts so good? One secret is in the kitchen. It’s not a secret ingredient or a proprietary oven, but the baker himself. “Dough Boy” Greg started working at Jack’s Donuts in New Castle when he was 13 years old. Outside of the kitchen, one might mistake him for a WWE wrestling star, bouncer, or football player. “I never played sports in high school, I was always too busy working at Jack’s,” he said while rolling out some famous pretzel donuts and sporting a Mohawk and a sleeve of tattoos. The ink highlight were the words “Dough” on his right fist and “Boy” on the left. After watching Greg during Neal

Jen Wilson stops in frequently with her 2-1/2 year old triplets for a dozen mixed donuts. She casts her vote for Jack’s Donuts saying, “It’s the only place I go, they are great!” Hamilton Southeastern’s girls basketball all-time leading scorer Taya Reimer stopped by to take home a box of donuts. She was home for the holiday, taking a break from basketball workouts at the University of Notre Dame where she will be a freshman this year. Her vote? “Jack’s is my favorite here at Geist.”

When our judges were asked for their predictions, Andy Murphy from atGeist.com and WriteStuff Writers called the fight, predicting Jack’s as the winner. Ballots were dropped off with the accounting firm of Wysocki & Company to be tabulated for the big announcement on July 12. At stake: bragging rights to the “Best Donut at Geist”, and the coveted “Sugar Cup”.

New Reservoir Proposed Northeast of Geist Region

| Terry Faherty ark Twain once advised people to “buy land, they aren’t making it anymore.” These days, that advice is often narrowed to waterfront property. But that’s not only incorrect as a quotation, it’s also untrue. New waterfront land is occasionally made. The forward thinkers of Anderson, Indiana, are considering a proposal to make a good bit of it. In exchange, they’re willing to give up a portion of Anderson itself.

M

According to an article in the Herald Bulletin of March 14, 2013, written by Stuart Hirsch, the proposed Mounds Lake Reservoir — to be created by damming the White River — would be seven miles long and cover 2,100 acres (Geist covers 1,900 acres). The estimated cost on March 14 30

geist c o m m u n i t y

Geist_August_2013.indd 30

was $300 million to $350 million, though that estimate had risen to $400 million by the time the Republic of Columbus, Indiana, ran an Associated Press follow-up on the reservoir proposal on May 10. Those millions are one way of expressing the cost of Mounds Lake. Another way is the percentage of Anderson’s land and infrastructure the lake would cover. According to the Herald Bulletin article, approximately “400 homes” and “several thousand feet of retail space” will have to be sacrificed. The latter includes Mounds Mall, not a big mall by Indianapolis standards, but one of the first enclosed malls in Indiana, complete with food court and multiplex. (Chesterfield and Daleville, two smaller communities, will also be affected.)

The construction of Geist Reservoir in the early 1940s required sacrifices, too, including a crossroads town called Germantown, whose footings still snag the occasional fishing line. But Germantown didn’t apply for inundation. Its movers and shakers, if it had any, didn’t donate money for feasibility studies, as Anderson’s currently are. Geist was the brainchild of Clarence Geist, owner of a water company in the then distant city of Indianapolis. In contrast, the Mounds Lake idea is homegrown. It originated with Quinn Ricker, President and CEO of the Ricker Oil Company, during a Leadership Academy of Madison County class. It has been shepherded since by the Madison County Corporation for Economic Development. Anderson has been a place of starts and stops. It had to be incorporated as a town three times in the early nineteenth century before the designation stuck. Later, the discovery of natural gas led to a period of prosperity and growth and then to another setback when the gas ran out. The city’s next source of prosperity was the automobile industry, but eventually that ran out, too. From a peak of 70,000 in 1970, the population has dropped to 56,000. The city is ready for the next new thing. The next wave. This time, it might literally be a wave. Or rather many waves sent out by many recreational users of the proposed Mounds Lake. And unseen waves passing through pipelines to still-growing cities like Indianapolis. As Quinn Ricker described his proposal to the Herald Bulletin, “It’s not incremental, it’s transformational.” One might almost say it’s biblical. It’s the kind of idea God had when he told Noah to build an ark, the notion that wiping the land clean—of multiplexes and strip malls—might really be the way forward. Would Mark Twain be amazed by all this? Probably not. Though he died around the time Clarence Geist was proposing his lake, Twain had a pretty good handle on the modern world. In addition to the investment advice cited above, he once said, “Apparently, there is nothing that cannot happen today.”

Geist Lake Coalition Steps Up to Treat Reservoir for Milfoil | Tom Britt Geist Reservoir turns 80 years old this summer, and like any body of water or land-loving amphibian, it’s starting to show the effects of aging. Our lake’s health was first called into question in 2007 when we learned

of toxic blue green algae blooms, resulting in warnings that scared many boaters out of the water. In 2010, Zebra mussels were found in the reservoir, threatening to clog drains and attach themselves to boats, docks, and props. Perhaps the most noticeable signs of aging have occurred over the last

two years with the proliferation of algae and invasive Eurasian milfoil. Something has to be done, and the Geist Lake Coalition (GeistLake.org) is stepping up its efforts to preserve the reservoir and subsequent property values of everyone in the greater Geist community.

Late last year, the GLC applied for a Lake and River Enhancement grant (LARE) to treat Geist for Eurasian milfoil. Scott Rodgers, a founding board member of the GLC and member of the Upper White River Watershed Alliance, spearheaded the effort that netted the GLC a $5,000 matching grant to embark on a pilot program in 2013. While the $5,000 from LARE is low, historically, once it starts funding a project, LARE sticks with it and sometime increases its contributions. Donations collected during this year’s

Blast on the Bridge covered the $5,000 matching portion of the LARE grant, and additional monies were committed to treating our ailing patient. Finally, the Town of Fishers also chipped in $15,000 to be used on milfoil on the north half of the lake. With some seed money in hand, GLC President Brian Hall began the process of nailing down needed permits from the Department of Natural Resources and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to treat

nearly 70 acres of the most-affected shorelines, coves, and access areas. Meanwhile, calls and emails started coming in from around the lake looking for a miracle drug to fight the algae and milfoil problem. “With only $5,000 from LARE and $5,000 from the GLC, we knew that we’d have to raise a lot of money privately as quickly as possible,” said Hall. “The conditions were deteriorating by the day, so we had to move fast to get treatments started.” In March, Hall painstakingly went through aerial images of Geist Reservoir, identifying problem areas to formulate a request for proposal to treat the worst of the worst areas. After reviewing competitive bids, Aquatic Control (headquartered in Seymour, Indiana) was selected, and made the first house call to Geist Reservoir. After submitting a map highlighting the hotspots, Hall went looking for funding from homeowners willing to back up their concerns with dollars.

Approximately 38 acres in five key areas south of the Fall Creek Bridge were treated July 12 for milfoil and algae. Discussions with residents in Cambridge and Masthead II near the Fall Creek Road causeway followed, with Hall and company passing the hat for more monies to fund other affected areas. “Managing expectations during this pilot phase is tough to do,” said Hall. “There are several native plants that people see in the lake that are actually good for the ecosystem. Not everything in the water needs to or should be treated.” Coontail and duck weed are two such plants. Neither takes root nor poses any threat to Geist Reservoir. They might be green, and in the case of coontail, mistaken for milfoil, but they are not harmful and should not be treated. Short term, the GLC is soliciting donations direct from homeowners,

neighborhood groups and home owner associations that are looking to get their shorelines or coves cleaned up. They are hoping to learn more about the types of treatments that respond the best, the frequency of applications, and which neighborhoods or organizations should align together for a longerterm strategy. Rodgers admitted that treating the problem with chemicals is a delicate balance that has been vetted by IDEM, DNR and Citizens Energy Group. "We are in triage mode right now with this milfoil problem, and we are seeking the best long term solutions. It is all part of a complex and intertwined puzzle where erosion, sedimentation, invasive aquatic plants and species like Zebra mussels come into play. Add to that, fertilizers and other pollutants feeding into the lake via storm drains from neighborhoods surrounding the general Geist area – all have brought us to this point,” added Rodgers.

Residents and neighborhood associations that would like to participate yet this summer in the pilot program should contact the GLC through its website at www.GeistLake. org. Also, individuals, companies, neighborhood associations, and residents who would like to serve as volunteers with the GLC should also sign up via the website. This is not just an issue for those living on the water. Everyone who lives, shops, or calls Geist Reservoir home is affected by the health of the lake. Visiting hours are open and we all need to pull together to stabilize and save our shared neighbor and patient, Geist Reservoir. Spiritual Connections | Kathi Moore Geography, community, family and faith are drawing some Geist-area business people together for their collective benefit. “How many times have you been at your kid’s kickball game with the same parents, but you have no idea what they do for a living, that together you could share great business success?” asked Roger Reeves, Territory Manager for Interactive Intelligence and founder of the St. Simon Business Network. “We already share the same values and beliefs. What this is about is breaking down the barriers between personal and business lives and working together to tap into opportunities for each other.” The St. Simon Business Network is a group of like-minded people who meet at St. Simon the Apostle Catholic Church the fourth Thursday of each month for an evening meeting of networking, high-level speakers and even employment opportunities. It is the embodiment of the ‘many heads are better than one’ philosophy. “Our mission is to help connect St. Simon parishioners so they might be able to work together,” explained Reeves. 40

geist c o m m u n i t y

Geist_August_2013.indd 40

Reeves suggested this sense of community and sharing on a business level has been lacking in the church. Some parishioners felt that if they could connect on that level, perhaps small business owners and business-to-business companies could learn from each other on topics such as changing tax laws and the health care act. “If you can’t share your problems in your church, where can you?” Reeves pointed out. Breaking down those barriers between personal and business lives can be awkward and the St. Simon Business Network offers the connection for those who want it. The gain is beneficial opportunities to learn, network and hopefully make connections that lead to people doing business with other St. Simon professionals. Appropriately, “A camaraderie in spirit found only where people pray together,” is part of the St. Simon mission. Join the St. Simon Business Network on LinkedIn www.linkd.in/12PvW7Z or visit the meeting in the Parish Life Center from 8 p.m. – 10 p.m. the fourth Thursday.

etaphorically speaking, it’s certainly correct to describe Cal Burleson’s career in professional baseball as “a home run.” Taking it a step further, one could rightly say it was a “called shot” by the 63-year-old Fishers resident. “I learned early on that I couldn’t play shortstop, “ Burleson shared during a recent coffee shop conversation. “But, I always knew I wanted professional baseball as a career.” And for 39 years, off-the-field baseball management has been the only job he’s had. “I’ve been grateful for the opportunity,” he added.

Geist_August_2013.indd 45

Burleson is vice president and general manager of Indianapolis Indians, Inc., the city’s first professional sports franchise. He joined the front office in 1975 as Indians ticket manager. Over the years, Burleson rose through the ranks as business manager, marketing manager, assistant general manager, and in the fall of 1997 was named general manager. He joined the publicly owned team’s board of directors about a year-and-a-half ago. “I’ve never asked for the next job. I just tried to do what it was time to do,” said Burleson.

7/24/2013 12:06:34 PM

Cal’s love of baseball began in his hometown (Akron, Ohio) where he played the game until age 15. “Usually third base. I wasn’t very good,” he conceded. As a kid Burleson listened to radio broadcasts of the Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Indians. “My first memories go back to the two World Series between the Milwaukee Braves and New York Yankees in 1957 and ’58,” he recalled. “I can still remember that I was driving a car when I heard that Roberto Clemente had died. I had to pull off road. Clemente and Al Kaline were my favorite players. I met Kaline a few years ago – that was a real thrill,” he smiled. When hitting curveballs became too challenging, Burleson jumped at the chance to be batboy and manager for his high school baseball team. He earned a business degree, and a master’s degree in sports administration at Ohio University in Athens, a college choice that was intentional. “It’s still regarded as the premier sports management program – that’s why I went there,” he said. As general manager, Burleson takes four road trips with the team each season. Otherwise, he’s in his ballpark office that doesn’t overlook the pristine playing field. “It faces west toward the parking lot!” he laughed. He busies himself with “bigger picture things” including a focus on community involvement to ensure that the Indians are engaged in

the community. Burleson also represents the Indians at International League meetings, and is on the marketing committee for AAA baseball. Time also is taken communicating with the Pittsburgh Pirates front office (the Indians’ major-league affiliate.) “The major league team provides the players, manager, coaches, and pays their salaries,” he explained. “Bats and balls are a shared expense. The Indians turn over a portion of ticket revenue to Pittsburgh, and Internet revenues are shared.” Burleson said he flirted with a move to major league baseball management, “But that was more than 30 years ago. I’m where I want to be, doing what I want to do,” he said contentedly. ““I still enjoy watching the game. It’s what pulls you through the day. [You’re] working on other things, but there’s always attention to the upcoming game that night,” Burleson added. Of primary importance to Cal is the fan experience at Victory Field. Burleson said he has a “terrific staff” that works hard to ensure the franchise fulfills its mission of providing affordable and memorable family fun. And, he’s quick to acknowledge the vital role that Victory Field plays. “The ballpark has given us an important base – it’s been a big part of our success,” he enthused.

Burleson has a ‘winning isn’t everything” attitude, conceding the team isn’t going to win every year, but that it’s important to provide competitive baseball. As of this writing, the Tribe is in first place with the best winning percentage in all of baseball, including the majors. But not everything that happens between the lines is about the game. “We had a challenge with ducks earlier this year walking across the field while game was in play,” he laughed. “Right between the mound and home plate – three or four ducks. They flew off on the own. We didn’t shoot the ducks,” he smiled.

Burleson intends to continue building the Indians’ brand and attendance with little concern about tomorrow. “Baseball has a great future. People love it, they’re emotionally connected,” he said. “People love to go to games and have a good time. The most consistent thing I see is they’re smiling.” There’s no question Cal Burleson called his career shot – and that he knocked it out of the park. When an exchange of land with the city of Lawrence gave the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources and Ft. Harrison a chunk of isolated yet urban space, thoughts turned to a dog park to put the largely unused area to good use. “We see lots of people walking their dogs on trails in the state park and know that dog parks are popular and successful in urban park systems elsewhere,” commented Doug Wickersham, property manager. “Providing outdoor recreation opportunities while managing and conserving our natural and cultural resources is at the heart of our mission.”

Beyond the obvious exercise advantage, other good reasons to bring your dog to a dog park include socialization (with dogs as well as people); physical and mental stimulation (which lessens destructive and annoying behaviors);

educational opportunities as dog owners network; and community benefits of providing a destination for dog owners away from other activities. The Ft. Harrison dog park will open in three stages totaling nearly ten acres of partially wooded land that includes a pond. The first area – the smallest – features open grass with some shade. It is scheduled to open Labor Day weekend. There will be a water station, benches and waste stations with bags. Planners are still waiting for the grass to take root and fill in the large dirt areas. The remaining two areas are scheduled for a 2014 opening and will include a shelter and a five-acre “adventure area” with rugged woods and a large pond for dogs who like to swim. Testing is still being conducted on the pond water to ensure safety. Each exercise area is surrounded by a six-foot fence. As dog park usage increases, native wildlife such as deer, rabbits and squirrels will likely adapt to using areas outside the fenced perimeter to avoid interaction with your pet. Entrance to the dog park is limited to Fall Creek Parkway on the north side of the state park. A $75 fee (per dog) buys members an access card to this gated area. Go online www.stateparks.IN.gov/2982.htm to download the application and rules for the park. If you have suggestions or questions, please visit the Ft. Executive Director for Human Resources and Communications, Sharon Smith and Superintendent Concetta Raimondi have a staff meeting in preparation for the upcoming school year.

MSDLT Ready To

Hit The Books | Lynda Hedberg Thies

As the tenth largest school district in the state, Lawrence Township Schools has a history of excellence in education and offering innovative programs. With the start of the 2013-2014 school year, the district is poised to continue on that path. In a recent conversation, Dr. Concetta Raimondi, superintendent, Lawrence Township Schools, shared the district’s vision for the upcoming school year. Her focus continues to be excellence in education, incorporating technology in the curriculum through professional staff development and providing clear communication for parents and students.

Digital Doings

Dr. Raimondi is continuing to look for ways to improve the way the district approaches education. She noted that today’s young people are more sophisticated at much younger ages. Often referred to as “digital natives”, their daily use of smartphones, iPads and social media are a way of life. “Young people are far more sophisticated so we must incorporate technology because traditional teaching styles may not work with their learning styles,” she acknowledged. 54

geist c o m m u n i t y

Geist_August_2013.indd 54

It is imperative the district require educators to integrate digital teaching strategies in the classroom. To that end, the district began using netbooks last year in middle schools and will continue to evaluate new models of effectiveness to keep instructional styles relevant. Raimondi said the district plans to expand technology at the high schools next, then grade schools.

Chalk Talk

Staying current about available tools and classroom applications through continuing education is more relevant than ever; school is never out for the professional. Dr. Raimondi was pleased when more than 200 teachers took part in professional development training for two weeks in June. Attendance was voluntary and Raimondi said the strong participation is evidence of the caliber of professionals working for the district. The district uses a model of collaboration to ensure that students benefit in a culture that encourages teamwork. Professional training continues throughout the school year with the staff meeting 3-4 times a week for 45 minutes per session. During the meetings the teachers review data and instructional studies to help them provide the highest levels of instruction, and to find best practices that work for all students. Raimondi said this creates a culture that clearly puts student education first.

The “Doc” Is In

The district also is using technology to keep parents and the community involved in their schools. BoardDocs was launched in July as an innovative, web-based program that provides unprecedented public access via the MSDLT’s website to allow preview of school board agendas, and to review actions taken by the board at past meetings. The hope is keep more parents involved throughout the year.

Raising The Bar

Dr. Raimondi noted that high school students are doing exceptionally well throughout the township. “Collectively, our graduating class of 2013 received approximately $20 million in earned scholarships to elite colleges and universities across the country,” said the superintendent who also has convened a task force study to begin developing an “academies model” that would allow students to focus studies on specific academic disciplines. Special certifications and dual credit opportunities would help students by preparing them for studies at technical schools or colleges and universities. The academies model is in its early stage and will be unveiled in the next 3-4 years. Raimondi envisions community and business partnerships with Lawrence Central and Lawrence North High Schools, much like those at the McKenzie Center for Innovation and Technology.

A Steady Ship

According to Dr. Raimondi, the district has few staff changes for the upcoming school year. She credits Dr. Sharon Smith, executive director, MSDLT Human Resources, for implementing practices and systems to find highly qualified, energetic individuals. “The Humanex System helps us discern through a reliable and valid survey who is hardwired to meet the needs and establish the expectations necessary for a top education for every student,” Dr. Smith said. This system is used by many area school districts including Zionsville, Westfield Washington, and Center Grove. But, as most employers know, it’s not only important to find the right staff but to keep the right staff. Leading a school district that serves 15,000 students requires dedicated and committed instructors and staff, and that is exactly what exists in Lawrence Township. To learn more about what is happening in Lawrence Township Schools visit www.msdlt.org. Welcome back to the students, teachers and staff! sunday funday bella vita’s rehab

| Stacey Place Why let Las Vegas have all the fun? Several years ago, Bella Vita in Geist borrowed the “Rehab” theme from the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, and the party has been “rehabbing” patrons on summer Sundays ever since. The idea behind Rehab is for weekend party-goers to recover after a wild Saturday night with, of course, a wild Sunday afternoon. This lakeside venue offers a unique, beachy experience. Bright yellow cabanas line the upper level, where servers cater to attendees, offering bottle service, signature Bella Vita cuisine, and a luxurious slice of shade on a hot summer Sunday. Lined with brightly colored, lighted palm trees, Rehab has a tropical, party vibe. The wading pool is a refreshing centerpiece, positioned perfectly for a dancing girl to take to the water and make it her dance floor. Two stocked bars with scantily clad bartenders draw a crowd that love to indulge in the sinfully delicious signature cocktails. 58

geist C O M M U N I T Y

Geist_August_2013.indd 58

Rehab often promotes a specific theme to draw a crowd. This summer, guests have enjoyed the “Casino Royale” event, at which two Blackjack tables and a Roulette wheel tested their luck. One week, Rehab hosted a “Pre-Fourth of July Bash,” the next, a sexy swimwear fashion show, courtesy of the producers of Midwest Fashion Week, with 18 models strutting poolside. Each Sunday Rehab has something for the competitive spirit. For example, a limbo contest with prizes such as popular concert tickets, free bottle service, and a day at the spa given to the lucky winners. Mindy Winkler promotes the Rehab events through social media, and then leads the events each Sunday afternoon. She described Rehab as, “A weekly beach party here in Indiana. We encourage people to show up in their bathing suits, and for boaters to come to Rehab straight off of the water to enjoy some cocktails with friends. What else are people doing on a Sunday afternoon when it’s not football season?”

f you’ve ever visited the Geist Puccini’s near the marina, then you’ve probably seen one of the most dedicated employees in the area—Amy Spear. Amy has been with this Puccini’s for 19 years, since it first opened in the summer of 1994. Many customers have told her that she is “all over the place.” She is one of three fraternal triplets with a sister and brother. She and her sister both applied for their first job at this location when they were just 15 years old. The owners, Don Main and Brooks Powers (Digger) hired them immediately.

62

Geist_August_2013.indd 62

Amy started as a hostess while her sister began as a busgirl. Amy has enjoyed working with both owners ever since. “I love being around people and the restaurant business,” says Amy, who became a manager at age 21. “I have a very high energy level so I like this type of work. It helps me sleep at night.” “Amy works 100 miles per minute all the time,” says Deven Willis, Vice-President of Operations of Puccini’s Smiling Teeth. “She’s been a spearhead (no pun intended) in serving as a role-model to other young women as they move into management. When I train others, everything is based on

what I call the ‘Amy Spear’ way, which involves working long and hard in the kitchen without ever complaining.” Although Geist Puccini’s represents the third location, there are now 14 restaurants spanning from Indiana to Kentucky including two sister locations (Buccetos) in Bloomington. Amy has helped open four new locations.

“I’m like the guinea pig for Puccini’s. I help by doing whatever they need done, from paperwork and overseeing the construction to hiring and training new employees.”

She likes her job because Puccini’s is not a corporate company but rather a casual, comfortable, family-oriented environment. She admits that she’s a tomboy at heart and likes the way the management isn’t afraid to get dirty and right into the mess. She says, “In some restaurants you’ll see the managers all dressed up wearing a tie, but here, we get into our jobs, literally. Tonight, I will be in the pasta station and tomorrow I will be serving.”

Amy enjoys working with the youth. “This job keeps me young. We have lots of kids from different schools working here and it’s great to see how everyone’s personality fits so well.” She was raised in a family with a strong work ethic. In addition to her triplet sister and brother, Amy also has an older sister and two parents, who reside here in Indy. Today, they remain close to one another. In fact, her triplet sister still picks up a shift once in a while so that they can visit with each other. In her spare time, Amy enjoys riding mountain bikes and golfing with her boyfriend. Amy invites you to come in and taste Puccini’s exceptional salads, pizza, pasta and calzones. There is something for everyone to enjoy. The menu also offers gluten-free appetizers, pizza, pasta, and sandwich breads. In addition, Puccini’s supports the local breweries by carrying Sun King and Triton on tap. | Kara Reibel . Photo | Brenda Staples Photography Indiana War Memorial Executive Director, General Stewart Goodwin, is a natural tour guide. You can sense his boyish enthusiasm and professional reverence for the building he works in. The building is a masterpiece. The artifacts contained within honor our heroes throughout Hoosier history. Commissioned in 1919 to honor those who fought in the ‘Great War’, materials from those countries were used in its construction and are meticulously displayed in the Shrine Room. The Shrine Room is a sight to behold – photos cannot do it justice. It is with heartfelt patriotism that Goodwin explains the elements and meaning of each aspect of this room. Joining the Air Force in 1971, Goodwin’s military career spanned 37 years. He was assigned to various positions including safety director at Fort Benjamin Harrison and chemical warfare specialist at Grissom AFB. Goodwin spent a good deal of time around missile silos. As a missile launch officer working with chemical and nuclear weapons, Goodwin had the highest security clearances. Goodwin is a veteran of Operation Desert Storm and ultimately retired as a brigadier general. Having attended the University of Evansville, where his father was an architect, moving to Indianapolis brought him back to his Midwest roots. Goodwin’s history and tenure of taking care of valuable goods (explosive, dangerous, caustic chemical and nuclear weapons) as well as his safety experience, led him to the job he loves now: taking care of priceless artifacts. One of the lesser-known facts about the museum is its trove of battle flags. Some 450 flags from the Mexican War to World War II are housed in a vault. Around eighty-five percent of battle flags are from the Civil War. A few are for display, but the bulk of this extensive collection awaits restoration and preservation.

Encompassing 24 acres of real estate in downtown Indianapolis, the Indiana War Memorial itself is a treasure – the gem of the state, in fact. “We can’t be compared to other museums nationwide,” said Gen. Goodwin. “Our museums and grounds speak for themselves, but many do not realize what they will find inside this amazing limestone building.”

Throughout the museum are displays honoring our heroes from every war and conflict. There are displays of famous Hoosiers throughout, both living and legendary. A computer system is available to look up a Hoosier relative who is a veteran – and if you don’t find them, Goodwin will happily see to it that they are added. There is a memorial area for 9/11 honoring those Hoosiers who lost their lives on that day. And, a curiously empty display case that normally houses articles from the USS Indianapolis, but which are temporarily on loan to Hollywood for a movie about our namesake ship sunk in WWII.

It’s easy to see why the general would love his job, the building and surrounding artifacts are awe-inspiring. With Goodwin’s background of safety and care for delicate items, it is no surprise that the governor entrusted him to this position. Did I mention admission is free? Kara Reibel lives in the Geist area with her family. In addition to writing, she owns Geist Pilates.

New Geist Boutique has Patriotic Flair

7/24/2013 12:07:34 PM

Pat Carlini | Photos by Jesse Morton

A

new Geist boutique called Abby Adams has opened its doors at the Fall Creek Shoppes at Brooks School and Fall Creek Rd. The boutique is named after Abigail Adams – wife of our nation’s second President, John Adams, and mother of sixth President, John Quincy Adams. Along with a dose of patriotism, the shop is full of American-made products and works by local artists. The patriotism comes from owner, Autumn Letendre, who knows the military life very well. The Geist resident and her only son lost their husband and father in military operations in Iraq in 2006. Since then, Letendre has worked to help military families everywhere, and had always dreamed of opening her own store. “I always thought about it,” said Autumn, who plans to spend more time at home this fall. “I always admired Abigail Adams and thought it would be a perfect name for a boutique!” Abigail Adams is a well-documented first lady who was involved in the politics of her day, especially women’s rights. She’s known for reminding her husband to, “Remember the ladies” –which now is the name of the boutique’s ladies’ night every third Wednesday each month. Abby Adams occupies the space that was once “Décor Aid”, one of several boutiques that have closed in this strip mall including the bag lady boutique and Yaprak’s. However, Autumn said she’s not really concerned about her boutique’s business. “We just have a very different product. There’s such a variety of items for men, women and babies – all at reasonable prices,” she noted. Autumn said her family and friends are supportive of her new venture, and she hopes shoppers will come check it out. In the meantime, we know of one woman – Abby Adams – who would be very proud of the new boutique in Geist!

here is much discussion and reporting today about autism – it’s possible causes and how best to treat a condition affecting as many as one in 50 US school-age children. This is a 72 percent increase in the diagnosis since 2007. That, in turn, has prompted two relevant questions: Are we experiencing a marked increase in the incidence of autism or, are physicians and others doing a better job of diagnosing the condition, helped in part, by a rising comfort level in talking about autism publicly?

While these conversations continue in academic and medical circles, Damar Services, Inc., has extended its highly-effective autism treatment protocols to serve the Geist area. In early June, Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Autism Services by Damar Specialized Services LLC opened a new clinic at 9905 Fall Creek Rd (intersection of 79th St and Fall Creek Rd). Damar is the leading provider of treatment, education and other services designed to build better futures for individuals with the most severe and complex intellectual and behavioral challenges. The new Geist clinic specifically addresses outpatient autism services, and the organization said in a recent news release that its move to northeast Marion County was a recognition of the demand throughout central Indiana for therapeutic services in accessible locations. ABA is recognized as the best-practice treatment for children with autism, helping them address the challenges with communication, social interaction, and restricted and repetitive behavior common in autism. “We recognize that treatment for children with autism extends well beyond the walls of a clinic site and long after the doors are locked for the evening,” said Dr. Jim Dalton, child psychologist and Damar president and chief of operations. “The most critical component in shaping the behavior of a child with autism takes place in the family home, guided by the parents and caregivers. ABA Autism Services by Damar ensures that

the family is not only engaged in treatment, but guides the treatment of the child,” he said in the news release. With highly trained and experienced staff, a focus on evidence-based treatment and the use of technology, ABA Autism Services by Damar delivers cost-effective treatment that leads to measurable results for each client. Services include ABA therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, parent training, summer programs, evaluations, diagnostics, and evening and weekend hours. In a recent interview with GeistTV.com, Dr. Dalton explained that families increasingly are finding financial help to cover treatment costs. “Many ABA programs are now covered under Medicaid and private insurance programs,” he noted. With more than 97% of those served [all diagnoses] experiencing greater levels of independence and success, Damar’s innovative and research-informed services have consistently resulted in individuals of all ages acquiring essential communication, social and behavioral skills – allowing them to return to their family homes, return to their local schools, return to their communities, and gain greater levels of independence and opportunity, according to the release. “We look forward to welcoming new children into our programs and working with their parents, schools and communities to ensure their success,” Dalton said.
