Longtime TV news anchor for WTHR Scott Swan and his wife Janaè talk about their family's holiday traditions. They often surprise their children with a spring break trip, not telling them where they are headed until their layover at an airport.
Geist area homeowners are concerned over a rash of lowprofile home break-ins where thieves are targeting jewelry. Retired police officer Tom Trathan of Geist Neighborhood Patrol gives readers insights on why they are targeting jewelry and tips on how to avoid being a victim.
One of the best known holiday light displays in the Midwest sits just off of State Road 37 and I-69 at Reynolds Equipment in Fishers. Read about the early days of Mac and Arline Reynold's business and the genesis of the drive-thru Winter Wonderland.

BIG Family Traditions | Christy Watson
Two Geist families with a combined 15 children talk about how they manage the chaos around the holidays.
‘Organized chaos’ may be used to describe our own successful ability to juggle somewhat hectic but ordinary life events, but it sure takes on a whole new meaning for these two Geist families. Each family is raising an extremely large family, or as some might think, a crazy amount of kids. Yes, all the children are from a single happy marriage. No, they are not home schooled, and yes, each of the couples still has “date nights.” Coleman and Rachel Gerstner are the proud parents of SEVEN children: Ellie, 14; James, 12: Jack, 10; Adam, 8; Grace, 5 ½; McKay, 2 ½; and Mark, 4 months. The Gerstners moved back to the Geist area in August after living in China and Alabama most recently. “Embrace the chaos” is a mantra Rachel uses to tackle the amazing task of raising this beautiful family, often while Coleman travels overseas. “It’s never going away, and once you’ve embraced it, it really doesn’t feel crazy or too chaotic.” Saturday jobs and nightly chores help to teach the children self-esteem while they learn and feel good about themselves. The Gerstner children are all active in sports while the three oldest take piano lessons as well. “We juggle it all with lots of planning, a big calendar and carpooling when possible.” Loading up their own Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 12-passenger van with their large family in tow is the Sundling family. Kurt and Leigh have EIGHT kids at HSE schools: Aviendha (Avi), 16; Kilarendha (Kiki), 14: Lethridge (Leth), 13; Kaylarendha (Kayla), 12; Loudenridge (Louden), 9; Landridge (Lan), 6; Ziendha (Zizi), 5; and Luxtonridge (Luxton), 3.

The Sundlings had no plans to have a large family. With Leigh having two siblings and Kurt having four, they admit the biggest challenge in managing a large family is prioritizing activities and lifestyle choices. The

Sundlings volunteer with several organizations and their children’s schools, serve on Boards and coach sports in addition to a myriad of kids activities and sports. “Our children are all in advanced classes, so they are very self-sufficient. It is not uncommon to see the older children helping each other or their younger siblings.”

Costco, buying in bulk and freezing anything and everything are just a few ways these moms try to keep to the budget while feeding such a large crew. “We do try to stick to a budget most of the time, although it is hard because we are constantly having unexpected expenses like field trips, coaches’ gifts, school projects, house projects, etc.,” says Leigh. A successful day for her would be sleeping through the night without being woken up and having free time to go to lunch or see a movie of her choice with a friend. “A great man, David O. McKay [inspiration for McKay Gerstner’s name] said, ‘No success can compensate for failure in the home,’ and I really believe that. Even though we are going to fail our kids a thousand times with the little things, if we keep trying and asking for forgiveness and showing kindness, I really believe in the end it will all work out,” says Rachel. These two families seem to be a living example of how to thrive in ‘organized chaos.’

Sundling Christmas Tradition
Every Thanksgiving morning, we have “Turkey Bowl” where we gather family and friends and have a game of touch football in a nearby field. It is usually followed by donuts and hot chocolate.
On Christmas Eve, we bake and decorate sugar cookies, make homemade pizzas, open one present each (pajamas and a holiday book), wear those pajamas and watch It’s a Wonderful Life. DECEMBER 2013

YATS
Community Cajun Cuisine
| Stacey Place
YATS is not a new name to many of Indy’s residents. This Cajun Creole eatery has been tantalizing the taste buds of Hoosiers since Joe Vuskovich opened the original location in South Broad Ripple at 54th and College. Since then, YATS has opened its doors in various communities across the state, all representing a shared philosophy but each also expressing their own unique Louisiana flair. As of August 28, Hamilton Town Center brought some spice to its shopping center by becoming home to a community YATS. These Creole concoctions are a combination of flavorful sauces and tender meats, served over a bed of rice with two pieces of buttery bread enhancing each meal. An extensive selection of hot sauces and spices lets customers dial up the heat on their New Orlean’s style fare. The rotating menu, posted on a chalkboard, lists such mouth-watering dishes as the best-selling chili cheese etouffee with crawfish, spicy jambalaya, drunken chicken, chili and also vegetarian and vegan meals. Typically 7-10 dishes are posted daily, but customers should come early and come hungry because when certain options are gone, they are done for the day. These Cajun eats keep it simple with only two price options: $6.25 for a regular entree and $7.25 for a combination. With no printed menus, no wait staff and disposable dishes, YATS is able to focus on what they believe is most important: great people, amazing food and quick service. The YATS philosophy centers on people. Rick Dowden, general manager of the Hamilton Town Center YATS, said, “The people who work here are the 14
geist C O M M U N I T Y
Geist_December_2013.indd 14
friendliest people you will ever meet. We are fortunate enough to have the right personalities, combined with the right place and offering the right type of food service.” Being community focused is a top priority, and this value is obvious to the guests who walk through their doors every day. “We love this community, and we look forward to serving all of the residents. We are very excited to be this community’s YATS.” In celebration of the YATS Grand Opening, a celebration was held October 12. The day was filled with live jazz music, colorful beads for children and adults, drink specials and hourly food giveaways. In true New Orleans style, the parties will continue; more celebrations are planned for the future. November 9th brings Hamilton Town Center’s shopping season kick-off, the Holiday Festival, with live music on the outdoor patio outside of YATS. This location serves beer and wine for adults to enjoy, and even the “bottoms up” pouring system is fun and unique. The kegs use a magnet system to fill each individual cup from the bottom to the top; this way, customers can enjoy a perfect pour every time. With a focus clearly on people, food and service, YATS has found a new home to the many residents who visit Hamilton Town Center daily. The upscale visual ambiance of the seating area in combination with the Down South Creole cooking makes for an authentic dining experience, all located in the center of an outdoor mall. Dowden exemplified the YATS attitude when he said, “We go out of our way to make everyone feel welcome and at home as soon as they walk through the doors. We want people to feel that this is their place; this is their YATS.”

ENTRUST ADVOPAY WITH YOUR BUSINESS AND THEY’LL GIVE THE CONTROL BACK TO YOU! By: J. Andy Murphy William Wise was looking for a career in business services that could provide both benefit and value to community business entrepreneurs everywhere. An entrepreneur in spirit, he found his true calling when he was in his early 20s and knew that serving the business community and providing a much needed service had unlimited growth potential. By his own words, “yes, working hard provides excellent benefits for any business owner, but working smart creates lasting relationships ensuring sustainable, continual growth”. Today, his company AdvoPay is in 38 states across the U.S. and serves thousands of merchant accounts with a customer centric sales force and dedicated corporate office staff. “There’s a unique value my business offers unlike typical merchant service providers as we offer local, in person service with transparent interchange plus cost pricing. Businesses, large and small need swift transaction methods that actually determine what the cost of doing business will be,” he stated. “I love what I do and the business operation of my company definitely provides a service and protective value for a broad range of businesses. In short, we help our clients achieve a substantially lower total cost of credit card processing than they would experience with a traditional merchant processing account, resulting in a more profitable, efficient growth focused customer”. Being a responsible neighbor in his community is also important to Wise. He is a supporter of many charities and can be seen at many fundraising events held around the city, including St. Simon where his lovely wife, Erica is a reading interventionist teacher (K-3rd). No matter what business you own, product or service you sell, technology and merchant services affect your daily operations and bottom line. Today’s economic changes have forced many business owners to downsize or restructure operations in order to meet their objectives; while others have benefited from these changes and have experienced significantly different results. Whether your business is 16
seeking sustainability or accelerated growth, AdvoPay provides industry specific integration and customized processing solutions to meet your business objectives. “We make it easier for you to focus on what matters most, the bottom line”. Three simple, yet effective, business directives that guide AdvoPay’s commitment, focus & dedication to its clients • AdvoPay provides informative and effective education that empowers its clients to meet their own business objectives • AdvoPay continually remains on the forefront of innovation by providing integrated service solutions • AdvoPay continually exceeds its client’s demands for transparency, speed and efficiency As a business owner, ask yourself if your current credit card processor has forced you to lower your expectations? AdvoPay is the voice between the merchant processor and your business. As a true Advocate, AdvoPay provides exceptional local service at a fair and transparent price. So why does your business need a Processing Advocate? AdvoPay does not take chances with their services or your company’s reputation. They understand the need for accountability and simplified, easy to understand billing. There is so much more to this company such as electronic check acceptance; gift, loyalty and reward cards; terminals/ software integration; processing systems support and integrated sales, marketing, and inventory management to name but a few of the extraordinary services AdvoPay provides. One thing is for sure: They will be the first merchant processor to tell you what you need to know and the last merchant processor you will ever need!

he Fortville Winter Festival was originally envisioned as a classic small town celebration of the holiday season — but that hasn’t stopped organizers from adding some contemporary touches to the annual event.
A zip-line and miniature train rides for the kids highlight the list of new additions for the fourth annual festival, which comes to downtown Fortville from 2-8 pm on Saturday, December. 7. Having been involved with organizing each of the previous festivals, Fortville resident Bob Sterrett said it’s been a hit with the community, noting it drew roughly 4,000 people last year. Even so, he said they’re always seeking attractions that will draw an even wider cross-section of the community. “We try really hard to add something new every year, to maybe get a few more people who weren’t there last year,” Sterrett said. The festival shuts down five blocks of Main Street to make way for Santa Claus, a performance stage and horse-drawn wagon rides. There is an hour-long community parade at 3 pm and a Snowflake Princess contest to determine which young girl flips the switch on the downtown light display at 6 pm. Sterrett, who heads-up the organizing committee with his wife Milda, said the day wraps up with fire pits on Main Street when it gets dark. “It’s just a wonderful event,” he said. “It’s a nice way to kick off the holiday season.” Members of the all-volunteer Fortville Action Committee prepare for the annual Fortville Winter Festival on Saturday, December 7. The festival is held the first Saturday of December each year. Since that falls on Pearl Harbor Day in 2013, Sterrett said there would be a memorial with The Indianapolis 500 Gordon Pipers bagpipe troupe. Admission to the festival is free and Sterrett said they make a point of keeping things affordable, saying the wagon rides and zip-line will be only $5 each.

“We try very hard to make it affordable for families to come and have a great day and see friends they maybe haven’t seen in a while,” he said. To help celebrate winter fun, girls aged 5 through fifth grade can participate in the Snowflake Princess Contest. Participants donate funds to help provide gifts for local children in need, with the winner determined by a random drawing. Participants can enter by making a donation of any size, with additional entries available in $25 increments. “We want everyone to have an opportunity,” said Sterrett. “It’s been a really fun part of the festival.” The Winter Festival itself is the primary fundraiser for Fortville Action Inc., a nonprofit organization that was incorporated in 2012. Sterrett said the group has been involved with several community improvement activities, adding that they refurbished local trash barrels and helped purchase a new entry sign for the community. The Sterretts got involved with the festival shortly after moving to Fortville. Bob Sterrett said the downtown was going through a patch of high vacancies and thought a community celebration seemed like a good way to bring people back to the area. “We thought if we could get people to come to town, maybe they would remember what it used to be like,” he said. “We have a really cool main 20

Also important to recovery are hydrating and stretching. According to Sallee, if there isn’t enough fluid in the tissues, they won’t heal. It’s important to note that tea, coffee, beer and pop (even diet) don’t count, as they are diuretics. Only water truly hydrates the tissues; so fill up that water bottle. This is the type of support and guidance you can expect from the talented Accelerated clinical team. Since we work with a variety of patients and injuries, we are fully prepared to meet your needs and provide you with an individualized plan of care to help return you to an active lifestyle. RACING TO SHARE WITH NEIGHBORS AT THE HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN 5K | Diane Harrington . Photos | Maria Lyon Those folks tromping through the streets of Geist on Saturday, October 26, weren’t running in circles — they were running the Holy Cross Lutheran 5K Race for charity. Organized by the church on Oaklandon Rd., the race raises money for The Sharing Place over at 6501 Sunnyside Road. It’s a ministry of Lutheran Child and Family Services, providing a food and clothing pantry for Indianapolis citizens in need. “This is our 10th annual 5K run here at Holy Cross,” said the Rev. John Sattler of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, wearing a T-shirt with the race’s other name: the Neighbors Sharing with Neighbors 5K. “The reason we do this is to help raise funds for our Sharing Place. That’s where we try to help the community.” While the average time for the 3.1 miles was 35 minutes and 17 seconds, several runners really kicked up their heels. Among those turning in top times for the day: To find out how other runners fared, race results are posted online. • • • • •

Sattler — as trim and enthusiastic as the runners who turned out that gray, cold and windy late-October day — says the congregation enjoys doing its part to help the community. “We’ve always been a church involved in the community. We try to do what we can to spread the word of God and also help people with their physical and spiritual needs,” he said. The 100-plus residents who tied on their sneakers, plus a few dogs all gussied up in various costumes, were eager to hit the pavement to shake off the day’s gloomy weather and lift spirits at The Sharing Place. Crystal Wilmot, development manager for the food and clothing pantry, expressed appreciation for the effort, TOP TO BOTTOM: Men - 3rd Nathan Luepke, 2nd Joe Bergin, 1st Mike Hlavek . especially since the demand for services has increased over the past year. With 100 percent of the goods and services needed to put on the 5K race donated, all $1,400 raised will go directly to The Sharing Place. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans contributed another $700. Several other area organizations also provided support to help make the event possible: • Au Bon Pain (food for racers) • Kellee Peek and Castleton Trophy Center (medals) • Andrew and Amanda Fritz with The End Result Co. (chip-timing of race) • Jan Smith and Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Centers (water for racers) • GetMeRegistered.com (race registration) • Cheri Kirkpatrick (certificates) • Tom Britt of atGeist.com (publicity) • Holy Cross Lutheran Church (coffee and shelter) Gail Henricks, Greg Gossart and Debbie Sapper were the “Team Tenacious” race-day volunteers. These eager volunteers and Sattler hope to see even more residents turn out for the race next year. Take a look at the race’s very own Facebook page for pictures of this year’s exciting event.

Going for the “Ho Ho Ho” with Funny Holiday Cards | Kara Reibel Everyone enjoys receiving holiday cards in the mail, from friends and family around the country and even around the world. The cards with photos are especially fun since those offer a chance to see the growth in children, fun vacation destinations throughout the year and a warm message of holiday cheer and goodwill. Then there are those who are out for a laugh… There are challenges associated with the creation of a ‘funny’ holiday card. First comes the inspiration for the photo. This spark of creativity could originate from a classic movie, a scene indicative of the family dynamic or from a funny television or pop culture event. Inspiration for such a project may come from an endless, unpredictable source.
26
geist C O M M U N I T Y
Geist_December_2013.indd 26
Then there’s the implementation process. The project typically requires the entire family to cooperate. I can speak from experience that getting a 7-year-old boy into a pink bunny costume does not come cheap! The details, the costumes and the participants all make or break the perfect shot. And sometimes the ‘perfect shot’ happens quite unplanned and works beautifully. Lauren and Ryan (formerly of Straight No Chaser) Ahlwardt paid homage to the classic Olan Mills studio experience. Having both been subjected as a child to the floating head of his sister in his baby photo in Ryan’s example, or the fake wagon wheel and library backgrounds in hers, they decided to give it a go. They donned not only matching red sweaters (note: Ryan is wearing a women’s XL), but
they got their cat, Rusty, into the photo. Not clear what their secret is to fitting a small red sweater on a cat… Unbeknownst to them, someone sent their photo to The Ellen DeGeneres Show as an ‘awkward family photo.’ The Stockberger family has turned their Christmas cards into an art form. “We used to send out the ‘peace and love’ message with a nice photo of the

kids. Then their personalities started to shine, and we began having more fun with it,” says Lisa. They now out-do themselves every year with sticking with a consistent theme: A Christmas Story. “One must be intimately familiar with the movie to understand the humor behind our cards, but that’s the fun of it,” Lisa shares. Their first recreation from the movie was the classic flagpole scene. Her daughter’s tongue actually stuck. “Thanks to hot coffee, we were able to quickly detach it,” said Lisa. After she got the perfect shot, of course.
FUNNY? Other families take NICE pictures for their Christmas cards! And besides, I am too short to wear a beard!” I responded with, “That’s what’s funny about it!”
Kara Reibel lives in the Geist area with her family. In addition to writing, she owns Geist Pilates.

the Bank that’s Close to home.
Last year, I was finally able to implement a plan I had for many years – a family photo where I wear white, my husband wears black and all 3 kids wear gray. It took years of patience waiting for the kids to grow to a size where I could find gray (tough color for find in kids’ sizes) turtlenecks for them to wear in the photo. Wouldn’t you know that this idea would come to fruition the same year as a certain inappropriate book trilogy? So most recipients of our card questioned the lack of ‘color’ in our family shot, thus not ‘getting’ my intended interpretation and some were offended! (I simply told them to ‘lighten up!’) So this year I decided I would raise the bar a bit.

Keep in mind when viewing my family’s card this year that my husband’s company makes fishing lures and fishing tackle, thus the ‘Fish Dynasty’ tag line. Finding hunter camo accessories was far more challenging than I had anticipated. Since when does Walmart not carry camo bandanas?! Left with no other alternative than to buy fabric at JoAnn’s (after striking out yet again at Gander Mountain for more camo accessories), I made my husband’s and the boys’ neck ties and head bands on my sewing machine. The night before the photo was to be taken, the now 8-year-old was complaining, “Why do WE have to be

The sales and service shop (which is pronounced “low key” bicycles) opened at 11640 Brooks School Rd. in Fishers in late October. Moffitt said the name is indicative of the store’s philosophy, which is based on talking with riders to understand their goals and objectives. “The idea with the name — and the feel I want to have with the shop — is consultative in nature,” he said. “It’s the bicycle that you want, not the bicycle I want to sell you.” LoKe Bicycles carries equipment for Jim Moffitt, owner of LoKe Bicycles

Discounts range from $20-$50, with the second-hand bikes either re-sold at the shop or donated to a regional charity that connects disadvantaged youth with bicycles. “I don’t have any now because the shop is brand new, but eventually I’ll

Moffitt anticipated that would be useful for families looking to have several bikes serviced at the same time. Moffitt said LoKe is also starting a bicycling club, which he described as a community for people who enjoy riding and want to do it socially. Signup information is available at the company website, lokebicycles.com. A graduate of Noblesville High School and Ball State University, Moffitt was a competitive cyclist in college and co-founded Midday Deli in the mid 1990s before moving on to a career as an account manager at a major food distributor. Throughout those changes, Moffitt remained a dedicated cyclist, saying that was the direction he wanted to take his next business venture.

Preventing the Most Common
Childhood Disease:
Dental Decay by Whitney Mucha Did you know that it is recommended to have your child seen by a dentist six months after the first tooth appears or by their first birthday? I’m not sure how I missed that tip in all the parenting books, magazines, and online articles I read when I was expecting my first child. I now know what I should have known years ago thanks to the helpful staff at Fishers Pediatric Dentistry. My boys were much older when they went to the dentist for the first time. I was shocked to learn that they already had several cavities. If only I would have known that taking my children to the dentist earlier was just as important as well baby checks with my pediatrician. Armed with this information, I could have prevented my boys from having cavities at such a young age.

I wondered what other information I may have missed during all of my new mommy reading so I decided to visit Fishers Pediatric Dentistry to learn more about cavities in children and pick up tips that I could help pass along to other parents. Dr. Ana Vazquez and her team have been established in Fishers since 1996. I visited the office on a rainy Wednesday morning and a tropical oasis welcomed me when I walked in the door. Children of all ages were playing while they waited for their office visits. I wasn’t surprised by the friendly office staff or the brightly colored environment because I had previously heard about the excellent customer service and family-friendly office. However, I was surprised by the in-depth information I learned about pediatric dental care and the cavity process.

Here are some of the pearls of wisdom I learned: • Moderation is key in helping prevent your child • Did you know that the single most common from getting early childhood cavities. Focus less childhood disease is dental decay? This is why on what they eat and more on HOW OFTEN the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry encourages parents to schedule their child’s first they eat it. A majority of all foods contain sugars and starches that allow the bacteria in the mouth dental appointment by their first birthday. • Cavity causing bacteria can be transmitted from to produce acids. This acid attack can last for 20 minutes or more, creating a ‘cavity mode’ that mothers to infants even before teeth erupt. This leads to cavities. bacteria can be passed from parent to child by sharing the same cup or even when you test the temperature of your baby’s food by taking that first bite. As a parent, it’s important to take care of your oral health to help decrease the chances your child will have problems at a young age.
• Clean your infant’s mouth after nursing or feeding a bottle by wiping their gums with a wet washcloth. This helps establish an early dental hygiene routine. Use a soft bristle toothbrush as soon as the first tooth appears and brush every morning and night using a smear of fluoridated toothpaste. • Never put your child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. Any sugary liquid, such as formula, milk or fruit juice, causes the teeth to be under attack by bacterial acids. This increases the chance for tooth decay. Bedtime drinks should be water only.
• All types of sugars, from candy to crackers, play a role in causing cavities. It is safer to give that ‘special sugary treat’ with a meal and not as a snack. • Sipping on a sugary drink throughout the day and making snacks readily available pose a greater risk for creating cavities. Frequency is a key factor for helping your child stay cavity free. • Choose healthy snacks between meals such as cheese, yogurt, or popcorn. Most importantly, drink water throughout the day and between meals to help rinse the teeth. • Establish a dental home before your child’s first birthday to help build a positive relationship with the dentist and provide important education to about preventing cavities.
Frequency is a key factor for helping
your child stay cavity free.
Wow, this might explain why cavities were found at my son’s first dentist appointment. Brushing twice a day was in our routine but it was when we first woke up, not after breakfast. I have to admit, chewy snacks and gummy vitamins were also a part of our early habits. It all seems so obvious now, but at the time, I didn’t realize ‘cavity mode’ was so important to avoid. Won’t my future daughter-in-laws be lucky someday that I’m now armed with this great information to share with them about dental health?

Fall Creek Township Has Angels All Year-Round | Janet C. Striebel
A
s discussed in a recent New York Times article (“Poverty in America is Mainstream,” 2013), nearly 40 percent of Americans between the ages of 25 and 60 will experience at least one year below the official poverty line during that period. In essence, destitution is becoming conventional in America. Who would ever think that people here in the Fishers/Geist area would face this type of adversity? “In some of our schools in this area, 20 percent of students get free or reduced breakfast and lunch,” says Jeff Hern, Fall Creek Township Trustee. The trustee’s office provides short-term help when families need immediate relief before they can become stable again. Hern adds, “While we do live in a predominately affluent area, our clients range from those making over six figures and have lost their jobs to families working several jobs to make ends meet. Many families are struck with a medical situation where they
have to miss work to care for themselves or their children which results in a loss of income. For those barely making ends meet, this can be a true hardship in avoiding disconnection of basic services such as electricity or water.” Another common obstacle is when a spouse is left in divorce situations has to find a job to support their children. Hern recalls a time when a stay-at-home mom was forced to seek employment after her husband left her. Her car had mechanical problems, and she needed temporary transportation to keep her job. The Fall Creek Township assisted her with her utilities and used a joint ministerial fund with Delaware Township to pay for her car repair, allowing her to get to work and find stability. Amid the holiday season, Fall Creek Township (FCT) collects for Toys for Tots by accepting donations onsite. FCT also participates in the Adopt-aFamily program by reaching out to local churches and contacting school principals to find families who need help providing gifts under the tree.
“Every kid deserves to open something up on Christmas morning,” says Hern who has served as trustee since January 1, 2011. “I would rather be proactive and reach out to find those who are struggling than to wait for them to find us. I don’t want a parent of a kindergartner or first–grader to have to explain why Santa did not show up at their home.” The FCT office also provides these year-round services: • Food pantry located onsite and is donation driven (open M - F, 10 - 2) • Back to school event that provides backpacks filled with basic school supplies • Township assistance to help people in financial distress with basic necessities such as shelter, food, water, clothing, medicine, etc. • Fire protection • Burial assistance when no other means of payment are available • Cemetery maintenance • Weed control • Fence disputes • Notary • Rental space availability • Computer use for seeking employment
Christina Sipka (left) and Stacy Puls (right) help organize the onsite food pantry. They both assist Jeff Hern at the trustee's office. 34

As trustee, Hern has lowered taxes every year, moving from red to black financially, and has paid off all debts. He has helped expand relief care dramatically by growing the food pantry, implementing the back to school and adopt-a-family programs and working with Toys for Tots. Furthermore, he collaborated with the Town in preparing contracts for all unincorporated areas outside of Fishers to ensure that these areas would receive fire and EMS protection.

Although this is a part-time job for Hern, he remains on call 24/7 with calls from the police. Hern recalls an incident when the police contacted him about a 19-year-old boy living in the woods with nowhere to turn as he worked his nearby job. Christmas Swans | Neal G. Moore . Photos | Brenda Staples Photography
More so than other holidays, the Christmas season brings with it a sleigh full of traditions. Holiday decorating, festive food and drink, gift exchanges, family outings and religious observances all provide deep reservoirs of emotion and familiarity for most families. That’s certainly the case with Scott and Janaè Swan, for whom Christmas is equal parts faith, family and fun.

Janaè laughed, “We had about four ornaments by the end!” Eventually, they gave in and bought an artificial tree, and that too, had a memorable story. “It was the last one Walmart had, and it didn’t come in a box. There wasn’t room in the car, so we tied the tree to the top of the van with the strings of lights still on it. We drove home about five miles an hour, and thank goodness, the Colts game was on TV, so no one saw us!” Scott explained. Recalling the incident, Janaè failed to see the humor. “This was an all-time low for tacky – the kids were mortified,” she smiled mockingly. “We live in a neighborhood with a real emphasis on Christmas lights,” Scott confessed. Added Janaè, “When we bought the house, we heard, ‘You know about the lights, right?’” and noted that ‘holiday light gapers’ often drive the neighborhood streets looking, in particular, for the house (not the Swans) with the reindeer poop fashioned using red Christmas lights.
The little lights “ aren’t twinkling.” {Art, Clark’s father-in-law}
I know, Art, and “ thanks for noticing.” {Clark Griswold}
“You don’t turn on the lights until the day after Thanksgiving – not before!” Scott emphasized. “You can put them up any time; just don’t light them. I don’t think I’m Clark Griswold,” he laughed, “but my son and I have always decorated the basketball goal with lights and the ball too. We put the lighted ball inside the net.” It is these stories and memories that the Swans cherish. “When the kids can count on the same things every year: putting the lights up; watching Christmas Vacation while decorating the tree; the advent calendar; the gift sheet – I think that’s good. The kids love those traditions, and someday they may continue ours and create their own,” Scott offered. While they hold dearly to our Hoosier values, Scott, 50, and Janaè, 49, are native Californians. The couple began dating in high school in Corona del Mar near Newport Beach. Scott’s TV news career took the couple from Palm Springs to Hawaii to Indianapolis (yes, they left Hawaii for Indiana), then Salt Lake City and back to Indy where Scott has been with the NBC-affiliated station for 12 years. “I love what I do. When I was 15 years old, I took a broadcasting class and did a newscast for the first time. I was hooked,” Scott explained, even if it did include wearing makeup for the cameras. “When your husband says, ‘I can get you a discount at the makeup counter,’ that’s kinda weird,” Janaè laughed. Janae’s position with the Pacers and Scott’s TV job often involve non-traditional business hours, and both have worked their fair share of Christmas Eves and Christmas Days. “The news doesn’t stop for Christmas,” reminded
Scott. On those occasions when work conflicts with Christmas, “We change the celebration date as needed. The kids understand that we have crazy jobs. Luckily the kids are old enough to get it. It’s not the date so much as it is being together,” said Janaè. The holidays provide plenty of fond memories, including the time Scott cleared his Admirals Bay driveway using only a small fireplace shovel to dig tire tracks. “We were from California!” reminded Janaè. “My neighbors still give me grief,” a sheepish Scott added. The Swans take impish pleasure in a particular kind of gift-giving creativity. Using Scrabble tiles provided by Mom and Dad, the kids must figure out the destination of certain family vacations. “We often surprise them with a Christmas gift of a spring break trip, but we don’t provide any details in advance. Usually it’s during flight layovers at the airport when the kids sort the Scrabble tiles to determine our destination,” explained Janaè. “Not until they’re on the plane will they know where we’re going,” laughed Scott. The couple emphasized they’re modest with the number of Christmas gifts exchanged. “We have always preferred to put our money into memories,” said Janaè. And the Swans are unapologetic about the true reason for the season. “For us, it’s always about faith. This is Christ’s birthday. The whole month is spent thinking about that and looking forward to Jesus’ birthday,” Scott remarked. “Our faith remains a central part of what we do at Christmas.” That’s why advent services at their East 91st Street Christian Church home are so meaningful. And come December 24th, it’s a safe bet you’ll find the Christmas Swans sitting in a pew, although Scott may be working that evening. The news, indeed, does not stop for Christmas. Neal G. RECENT HOME INVASIONS HAV
E ONE COMMON THEME
Gold for Drugs | Terence Faherty A pair of recent high-profile home invasions have made Indianapolis homeowners extremely security conscious. But residents should also be aware of an increase in what might be called low-profile break-ins. In these examples, burglars are specifically targeting gold and silver jewelry that can be turned into quick cash.
In keeping with the non-professional nature of these burglars, the break-ins are often low-tech, crimes of opportunity. The perpetrators are looking for relatively soft targets: homes in affluent areas whose occupants are away during the day, homes without alarm systems, homes whose doors are inadequately secured or perhaps left unlocked during the day and homes whose hidden keys can be easily located.
According to retired police officer Tom Trathan of the Geist Neighborhood Patrol, these crimes are a byproduct of two seemingly unrelated economic factors: the high value of precious metals and the low price of addictive drugs. By now, everyone has seen commercials and roadside advertising for operations that offer to buy unwanted gold jewelry. These are legitimate businesses that make it possible for the rightful owners of gold to turn it into cash. But like pawn shops before them, these firms can also be used by thieves to dispose of stolen property. Until recently, cash-for-gold outlets were not required to maintain records of a seller’s identification or photographs of purchased jewelry. The items in question typically weren’t offered for resale in their original form as is the case for pawned articles. The intention from the start was to scrap the jewelry to recover its gold and other precious metals, and jewelry could be melted down as soon as it was purchased. The opportunity for fast cash with low risk has created a specialized type of burglary. In these break-ins, other kinds of valuables, such as consumer electronics, which would force the thieves to deal with pawn shops or fences, are deliberately overlooked. The target is precious metal. But again, the high price of gold and silver is only one economic factor behind these break-ins. According to Trathan, a second and more compelling motivation is the low price of illegal drugs. The street price of drugs like heroine has declined to the point where they are attracting younger and more geographically diverse buyers. Though cheaper, these drugs retain their traditional power to addict. The result is hooked users desperate for cash and willing to force a door or window to find gold. 42

Tom Trathan, a special investigator with Geist Patrol, has seen an increase in home burglaries over the past months.
NEWSLETTER | DECEMBER 2013
11/25/2013 5:26:59 PM
This is a nationwide phenomenon, as a quick scan of the Internet will attest. The Lake County, Ohio, Sheriff’s Office reports that cash-for-gold “burglaries have increased significantly this year,” according to a News-Herald story posted August 11, 2013. Last November, the Baltimore Sun reported that local police had arrested two women for selling a “shoebox full of gold and silver allegedly linked to a string of 30 area burglaries.” The police caught the women by staking out a store that paid cash for gold. The police in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, did even better last January, according to Philly.com, when they arrested the last member of a ring that may be responsible for 40 break-ins. Police describe the ring members as “heroine addicts who broke into houses and stole jewelry for drug money.” Last July, police in Indiana received an important new tool for combating precious metal break-ins. According to the Indiana Public Media website, a new law that took effect July 1 requires precious metal buyers to obtain seller identification and to hold purchased items in their original form for 10 days. Tom Trathan suggests that homeowners can also take steps to help the police. He offered the following tips for avoiding break-ins: • Be wary of people going door-to-door. Report anyone who gives a vague or suspicious reason for ringing your bell. That person may simply be looking for unoccupied houses. • Watch out for people who appear to be checking out your home or your neighbors’ homes. • Be sure your doors and windows are locked, even when you’re home. Don’t forget the service door to your garage. • Watch out for prowling cars. • Don’t advertise where you hide a house key. (Under the doormat is not a secure location.) • Be wary of having work done by people you don’t know. One recent break-in was done by a member of a tree trimming crew. Bob Hittle, president of the Admirals Sound homeowners group, echoes Trathan on the importance of vetting workmen and being vigilant. He suggests that when getting estimates for any work, residents should ask contractors whether they do background checks on their workers and avoid companies that don’t. Hittle also praised Indianapolis Star carrier Marie Berry for spotting suspects in a recent break-in. Trather urges Geist residents to follow Berry’s example by reporting all suspicious activity to the police.
Police are investigating a disturbing pattern of home invasions in the Geist area. Here are summaries of recent break-ins and police activity: NOVEMBER 15 A home was burglarized in Feather Cove 1. The victim was working in her yard with the garage door open. When she finished, she went inside and noticed the door to the inside of the house was open. Later, she noticed an open jewelry box. Missing items included three gold necklaces, costume jewelry and earrings. The victim noticed a gray car parked across the street which may have been related to an Admirals Sound break-in the day before. NOVEMBER 14 A burglary in Admirals Sound. The homeowner had just left, and the suspects kicked in the doors and went directly to where the jewelry was without disturbing anything else including multiple electronic devices. Prior to the break-in, a neighbor had noticed a vehicle occupied by three or four college-age white males sitting suspiciously near some homes. OCTOBER 8 Geist Patrol and Fishers Police Department caught two black male suspects who fled from a home invasion near 86th and Fall Creek. The homeowners, retired IMPD police officers, fired shots at the intruders who fled on foot and were later caught in Windermere. OCTOBER 1 An Admirals Sound home was broken into sometime during the day. The burglar(s) came in the back door and primarily stole jewelry, leaving laptops and iPads alone. AUGUST 27 Geist Patrol responded to an alarm call on Fall Creek Road. They identified a worker for DJ’s Tree Service in the yard, and moments later, they arrested him for burglary. MID-JULY Police were looking for a male suspect who broke into a house on Anchor Mark Drive in Admirals Bay during the day and stole more than $22,000 in jewelry. Authorities believe that burglars are casing homes in the Geist area and may be driving a dark-colored mid-sized SUV with Illinois plates. This description is of a suspect vehicle wanted in one of the burglaries. “We are advising all residents to increase their awareness and to call us or the police if they notice something unusual or suspicious,” warned Geist Patrol’s Jim Cleek (317-842-8082). “There are many desperate criminal groups committing crimes every day near your neighborhood. Please use caution and avoid confrontation with them. Let police authorities confront them.”

Author Alison Martin-Books of Echo Pointe
Leading Through Mentoring Echo Pointe Author Hits it Big | Kathi Moore Alison Martin-Books likes to say, “Everyone has a story”; that telling moment in your life where you had a choice to overcome or give in, to be empowered to prove everyone wrong or admit everyone was right. Often that story colors who you are and what you become. It certainly did for Echo Pointe resident Martin-Books, President and CEO of Mentoring Women’s Network, nationally headquartered here in Indianapolis and her own company, EndorseIndy. In her book, Landing on My Feet: Learning to Lead Through Mentoring, Martin-Books sets out to explain why mentoring is so important in our lives and how to cultivate those relationships. She, sparing no vulnerability, uses her own life as an example of why especially women would be better served if they concentrated more on supporting and developing one another. From the time she left home at 16, was emancipated at 17 46

and had a son at 18, she learned to be fiercely independent and persistent. Mentors taught her to feel empowered and “fake it ‘til you make it” as you find your inner strength. “Life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent how you choose to respond,” she reminds us. Find the five people around you who can help you achieve the things you want in your heart. Focus on those people who will support you, not the ones who do not have a good perspective. As a first generation college graduate, for example, Martin-Books frequently had to look outside her own family for advice. We’re seeing a shift in the business world, she commented, where more leadership development is available, yet women still earn just 77 percent of their male peers. There has been no female CEO of a national bank. Only 13 of America’s largest 500 companies are run by women, and women account for just 2 percent of top executive positions such as chairperson, president and CEO. PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi once said, “The glass ceiling will go away when women help other women break through that

ceiling.” That is exactly what Martin-Books had in mind when she founded the Mentoring Women’s Network three years ago with the mission being ‘a community of empowered women developing one another personally and professionally through mentoring relationships.’ The book goes into much more depth including eight specific mentoring lessons with worksheets for you to fill out as you go along. It also includes the personal stories of 17 female leaders, from a 21-year Lilly scientist and manager to the chairperson of the International Downtown Association, CEOs of their own companies and the marketing director of a major health organization. All are women…all have a story… all were nudged along in their careers by amazing mentors. Martin-Books has a passion for advancing female leaders. The book is a toolkit for cultivating your own mentoring relationships, and it seems to be working. A manager at Roche Diagnostics recently read the book and promptly ordered 300 copies for their new mentoring program (available on Amazon.com and landingonmyfeet.org). Kathi Moore, a career marketer and public relations director, has a natural curiosity that leads her in many different directions and helps to provide ideas for her writing. She and her husband have 3 children, 3 dogs and 3 cats.

If you are thinking of adding a piano room to your home, it may be time to Invest in Your Nest and make your music room sing! Piano rooms are unique spots in the home, and they need a special look and design. They need to inspire those who practice and offer a seat for listening pleasure. The room for music needs to have its own style, and with a few tips from the pros, you can pull together the room of your dreams! In this Geist home, the new black Ritmuller player piano was an early holiday gift to the family and needs a room to call home. They chose a main level room that was a little small for a dining room but perfect for a piano room. The room wasn’t too hot or too cold and was without direct sunlight… things that can damage a piano over time. The room also had beautiful hardwood floors, but pianos can be loud in a room of hard surfaces so a large area rug was added to help absorb sound. Once the scene was set, it was time to give the piano room a look of its own! Lisa (Designs by Lisa) says piano rooms are fun to decorate because the focal point is already there…the piano! But this room needed some glitz and glam. They began by removing all the beige floral wallpaper and white wainscoting from the lower half of the room. Once the walls were clear, Lisa painted the walls in shades of gray. “It’s a treatment where I drag three different shades from ceiling to floor, giving the the appearance of a much higher ceiling," says Lisa. “Then I add touches of gold to the walls and the ceiling of the piano room.” Shades of gray offer a striking background for the piano. The gold ceiling and rope lighting add sparkle to the room.

Beige wallpaper was not going to provide the appropriate background for the glossy black piano. Lisa and her team cut two dozen trim pieces, painted them bright gold and hung them evenly around the room. “The trim around the floor and the inset ceiling were also painted gold for an overall Hollywood glam look!” says Lisa, “Just like adding a diamond necklace to top off your evening gown, a gold-toned crystal chandelier became the jewelry for this piano room. It’s the final splash of drama for the music room!” Now you might say this is a music room that hits all the right notes! For more information and photos, visit patcarlini.com. Lawrence Township Schools Superintendent Search Well Under Way | Lynda Hedberg Thies The Board of Education is just weeks away from concluding their search for the next Superintendent of Lawrence Township Schools. The Board is grateful for the input of over 150 people including staff, teachers, administrators, parents, elected community officials, students and former board members. Because of the involvement and input of the community in partnership with The Board of Education, the field has been narrowed, and the interview process which began in midNovember will conclude by mid-December. According to Kathy Varie, Vice President Chairperson for the Superintendent Search Committee for The Board of
Education, “We appreciate the broad interest in our district and are excited to begin the interview process with this highly competitive pool of candidates.” The applicants come from 12 states with 10 applicants selected from Indiana. The Board of Education is utilizing the services of BWP & Associates, a search firm, to narrow the field of applicants. They are using the Superintendent Leadership Profile created by the community to create the top candidates and proceed with the interview process. The interviews will be conducted through mid-December with the goal of having a new leader in place as Superintendent Dr. Concetta Raimondi concludes her term at the end of the year. For further details about the search, visit ltschools.org.

| Charles Waldo During the 50+ years I was in business and/or higher education, I was involved with any number of change projects, few of which went off exactly as planned. For a number of years before retiring as a professor in Anderson University’s Professional MBA program, I taught numerous sections of the “Managing Change” course. I collected many “war stories” from my working students, showing few of their change projects ever fully met their objectives with a surprising number going under altogether or never even getting off the ground. What have been your experiences? Why this dismal success rate? It’s so easy to blame everything on Murphy and his (her?) infamous Law – “If anything can go wrong, it will.” But this is just one explanation for change failures. Over the years, I have collected hundreds of other laws, axioms, postulates, corollaries and observations that more fully explain why things so often go wrong. Here are a few of my favorites: CHISHOLM’S SECOND LAW When things seem like they can’t possibly get worse, they will (also sometimes known as Gattuso’s Extension of Murphy.) It is related to Boling’s Postulate: If you’re feeling good, don’t worry. Bad things will soon happen to get you over it.

GUMPERSON’S LAW The probability of anything happening is in inverse ratio to its desirability. FINNEGAN’S AXIOM The farther away the deadline on a project, the more doable it looks. The inverse is also true.

THE NON-RECIPROCAL LAWS OF EXPECTATIONS Negative expectations will yield negative results. Positive expectations will yield negative results. BENEDICT’S PRINCIPLES 1) Nature always sides with the hidden flaw. 2) The hidden flaw will only reveal itself after it’s too late to do anything about it. KUSHNER’S OBSERVATION The chances of anyone taking initiative and doing something positive is inversely proportional to the number of other people who are in a position to do it instead but probably won’t. Lynch’s Law is related: When the going gets tough, everyone leaves.
2) But who said things will get better? HOWE’S OBSERVATION Everyone has a plan that will not work, but you will find this out too late to do anything about it. THE FINAL LAW If several things that could have gone wrong did NOT go wrong, it would have been ultimately beneficial if they had.
It has been widely rumored but never proven that Murphy actually did not invent this law, but rather it was derived by someone else with the same name. I hope these observations and principles been helpful. And always remember, Murphy was an optimist. ANONYMOUS It is impossible to make anything foolproof since fools are so ingenious and plentiful. MOLLISON’S BUREAUCRATIC HYPOTHESIS If an idea can survive a bureaucratic review and be OK’d for implementation, it isn’t worth doing. If attempted, it will fail. CONWAY’S OBSERVATION In any organization, there will be one person who actually knows what’s going on. That person will be fired. Waldo’s Corollary to Conway: Never let your boss know you are smarter than he is. Owen’s Corollaries to Conway: 1) Every organization has an allotted number of positions to be filled by misfits. 2) Once one misfit leaves, another must be recruited. WESTHEIMER’S RULE Because everything takes longer than planned, use Westheimer’s Rule to project how long a job might really take: Estimate the time you believe the task should take, multiply by two and change the time measure to the next highest unit. Thus we allocate two days for a one-hour task. EHRMANN’S COMMENTARY 1) Things will get worse before they get better.

BUILDING A WINTER WONDERLAND FOR GENERATIONS Story | J. Andy Murphy . Photos | Brian Brosmer It has long been rumored that Santa Claus had an idea that brought a twinkle to his eyes every time he flew with his reindeers over a spacious piece of land resting in a sleepy little town called Fishers. So on one starless winter’s night, he sent Elf to the cozy house of Arline and Mac Reynolds. It was the very night they were celebrating the start of a new life as the proud owners of a new family business. No one is exactly sure what Elf did to plant the seed of Santa’s idea to create the best Holiday Winter Wonder Way of Lights that would brighten the lives of all who gazed upon it for generations to come. But the magic was planted, nesting quietly in Arline’s heart for several years until one day a simple suggestion by a trusted employee began a tradition that would change the fabric of State Road 37 from Thanksgiving to Christmas to this very day. Before we go on with the story, perhaps it would be wise to share with you how it all began.

The Year was 1955... Mac and Arline Reynolds had made up their minds to sell their family farm as allergies made it impossible to continue farming. They knew taking their three children away from the life of being farmers would not be easy, but times had fallen hard on the life of farming, and tough decisions had to be made. To be honest, everyone except the banker (who encouraged them to make the move) felt the couple was making a big mistake selling the farm in a depressed market, let alone taking the money and reinvesting it back into a business in which neither one had ever worked. But together, they had a driving faith and a firm commitment to build a business based in agriculture, tractor parts, equipment, toys and a public service model for themselves and their children that would last no matter what the weather brought. And so on December 15, 1955, the Reynolds family opened Reynolds Farm Equipment in a store in the middle of Fishers, Indiana. It was a John Deere dealership from the beginning, and from the first day, the whole family worked at it. Mac and Arline handled ordering, picking up, stocking and selling parts. Mac was the salesman, and Arline also took care of all the bookkeeping. The Reynolds children who were 14, 12 and 10 at the time worked after school, on weekends and during the summer. Employees John Wilder and Neal Bower handled service. Howard Barnhill was hired as a salesman shortly after the business opened. To say that the road has always been easy for the Reynolds family would not be telling the whole truth of this story. As with any business, challenges lurked within each new sunrise. But this family found the way to get past the rough times. Mac used to say, “What kept it interesting are the people you meet. If you’re out there having a rough time, it could be very discouraging, but then someone walks in wanting a part, and you have it. Or if you can help him keep his combine running, then it offsets all the problems of the day and makes it all worth it.” A solid reputation and lots of hard work soon saw the business expanding. Although Mac and Arline encouraged their 58
geist C O M M U N I T Y
Geist_December_2013.indd 58
children to get a good education and investigate other opportunities, the family business is where they all wanted to be after their college educations. “It’s satisfying to have created jobs, to have places for your children,” says Arline. Today a third generation has come along, and the attraction is strong for them to be a part of their very successful family business if they so choose. So what began in one rented building in Fishers has grown to an industrial park at the intersections of State Road 37 and I-69, plus a service center in Anderson, Mooresville, Muncie, Lebanon and Sheridan, Indiana as well as stores in Xenia, Ohio and Nicholasville, Kentucky. Reynolds Farm Equipment has indeed grown into one of the largest John Deere dealerships in the country with a reputation for giving back through a generous and giving community stewardship which leads us to sharing with you how the spectacle of Christmas lights began. As we said, an employee asked one year about putting up some lights to brighten up the holiday season on the property. Arline told him to go ahead and give it a shot. He decided to use an old Model D tractor sitting in the warehouse. He strung lights across the body of the tractor, and it looked as if the tractor was moving. When people began commenting on how much they enjoyed seeing the display as they drove by, they also encouraged them to do more. This moved Arline to ask one of their experienced staff welders if he could add reindeer antlers to the tractor display. Needless to say, tractors gave way to hundreds of crafted displays, including several pieces from L.S. Ayres original window scenes. Today, Arline thinks there might be nearly one million lights strung on the multiple creative displays strategically placed which range from the Manger in Bethlehem and horse drawn carriages to hockey players, flying skiers, a farmer planting a field, windmills and so many additional wonderful and magical lighted scenes. You just have to see it for yourself as you drive through this incredible maze of a Winter Wonderland spectacle which is open to the public free of charge.

Keeping to the spirit of giving back, the Reynolds invited the “Come To Me Food Pantry” (located just off 116th Street in Fishers) to join with them in collecting donated cans of food, clothing or accept a monetary gift to help others less fortunate. [Publisher’s note: Last year, $36,000 was collected and donated to this worthy community cause. If you’re interested and want to learn more about the good deeds of “Come To Me Food Pantry,” please contact Linda Williams, director of the program at 317-695-0069 or Don Greenlee at 317-522-8006. Just tell them Arline sent you!.] If you’re wondering what it costs the Reynolds family to construct this wonderful light show each year, I’m afraid this is one secret the family does not share. They only say they wholeheartedly want to share the holiday spirit experience with all who take the time to come out to see it year after year, generation after generation. To the Reynolds family, the substantial yearly cost is completely offset when Arline (who will soon be 95) walks to the control box and says, “Ladies and gentlemen, let the show begin!” It is also rumored that a certain man in a red suit with a white beard and a jolly laugh that warms your heart picks up the whopping electric bill year after year! After all, it was really his idea in the first place! So gather up your family, pack the car with goodwill and prepare to drive through a setting that is truly modeled after Santa’s village at the North Pole. Yes, Virginia, there really are angels, and they live right here in Fishers, Indiana! We call them the Reynolds! P.S. This year, the first Long Tractor (110) the Reynolds family ever sold 50 years ago was bought back by Mac and once again resides with the Reynolds family. The second such tractor sold in the state of Indiana now resides in the Smithsonian Institute! J. Andy Murphy is a published author and works as a literary agent for regional writers. The Strike Zone hits home run with renovation, instructors It wasn’t enough to have batting cages, a pitching area and three former Major League Baseball players as instructors at The Strike Zone. The owners of the Fishers sporting site wanted the facility to hit more of a home run than a double, explains Tyler Underwood, a senior associate with management company Revel & Underwood. So The Strike Zone brushed off its figurative home base, revamped the interior and made a few business tweaks, too. The result of the August face-lift is a fresher, cleaner appearance with additional features that offer more of what customers want, as well as more safety. Open since 2007 at 12550 Promise Creek Lane — and well-positioned right across the street from Billericay Park, home to the area’s Little League program — the sporting venue offers much-needed access to year-round, 24/7 batting and pitching practice. Consequently, its three independent instructors, who rent time there, started picking up more and more clients. “We decided to change our style from thinking about [having] all members to [adding] more classes. We want to be able to do more classes

and camps and work even more with the instructors,” Underwood said. The Strike Zone has already brought on a fourth instructor to add to the mix. Instead of four batting cages and one pitching area, The Strike Zone now has three batting cages and two pitching areas. “We realized that the fourth cage wasn’t being utilized as much, so we decided to back that cage out and add another pitching area,” Underwood said. Two of their former MLB instructors focus on pitching skills, so this change makes it easier for them to book clients. “Before, if one of them was doing a lesson, the other struggled a little bit,” Underwood said. In addition, the pitching lanes are wider now. “You don’t feel like you’re in some really small tunnel trying to throw the ball. It’s nice to have a little more room,” he said.

That change allowed The Strike Zone to create three 60-foot-long batting cages that are taller, larger and wider than before. It helped transform the increasingly raggedy look of the cages. Before, a lack of room meant swinging bats sometimes put holes in the cages.
thestrikezonellc.com 12550 Promise Creek Lane Fishers, IN 46038 (317) 578-9400
“Now, people can move around a little easier in there and not cause any damage to the cages,” said Underwood, noting that by no longer having to pin back ripped nets, the area is significantly safer.
INSTRUCTORS
The west wall is now covered with plywood and painted a bright blue. That serves to hide the building’s insulation but, more important, gives the batter a much better view of the ball as it flies. The east wall also is adorned with blue-hued plywood, both to protect the drywall and so catchers can pick up the baseballs a little more easily.
The Strike Zone’s newest instructor is Travis Reboulet, who played IPFW Division 1 baseball. He’s focusing on pitching and hitting.
A new rack area keeps equipment tidy, and a new security system allows better monitoring of the facility to keep unwanted behavior at bay.
THE OTHER THREE INSTRUCTORS ARE:
“Their experience, their knowledge, shows how we take baseball serious; we don’t let just any Joe come in off the street and give instruction,” Underwood said. “We make sure we have quality and very professional people in there giving instruction to our members and people in the community.” The instructors are independent from The Strike Zone, but they work with the facility like a well-coached team, coming together to offer camps and classes. “Our members are families with any kid between the ages of 8 and 18 that’s big into baseball and wants to be able to practice during the winter and on the side during the season. When we opened the facility, I was in high school, and we were tired of driving 35 minutes into Noblesville. There was nothing right here in Fishers,” Underwood said. The instructors and clientele have been extremely happy with the renovations, Underwood said. “It’s just given a little more room for everybody to work,” he said.
• Jim Reboulet (Travis’ father), a former St. Louis Cardinal and Pittsburgh Pirate. He’s been coaching for more than 18 years and specializes in hitting and throwing. • Casey Mulligan, a former Cardinal. He works with clients on pitching, hitting and catching. • Wes Whisler, who has been with the Chicago Cubs and White Sox and currently plays for the Charlotte Knights. He tackles pitching and hitting during October, November and December.
“We make sure we have quality and very professional people in there giving instruction to our members and people in the community.”

Girls About ToWn Follow us to see where we’re @ - Rachel Q. & Chalene B. -
Geist Spa Day L
ooking for a fab gift idea? We suggest checking out one of Geist’s local spas for their offerings. Your Girls About Town had a hard day’s work on this one having to experience facials, massages and mani-pedis. As we always say…work work work, what more must we endure?! Our first stop was to visit The Woodhouse Day Spa located in the Geist Pavilion shopping center at Olio and 116th Street. Newly owned and COMPLETELY refurbished, we are lucky to have this new addition in Geist! Your holistic experience begins the moment you walk in as the wonderful aromas and tranquil music ease you into a peaceful mode of relaxation. Owner Terri Smith warmly greeted us along with spa director Susanne Loehr and gave us the grand tour of this exceptionally unique spa. No attention to detail has been spared here! The 13 treatment rooms were spectacular. Most interesting to us was the Vichy Room where you can receive body treatments like a detoxifying seaweed wrap which includes a Vichy shower or rain bar. Never seen that 64
geist C O M M U N I T Y

before! The rain bar actually hangs above the table and washes away the all-natural products used during your treatment. Fifteen second spurts of hot to cold “rain” are cascaded over your body and concludes your stimulating and delightful experience! The second treatment room that caught our attention was the Tub Room. Inside was an actual pedestal bath tub and fireplace! Start your rest and relaxation
experience by soaking yourself in the beautiful tub for 15 minutes before your treatment. The fireplace combined with the delicate lighting create the perfect ambience for your day escape! Finally we were treated to a 50 minute massage by the amazing Ryan Knotts and The Woodhouse Signature Minkyti 80 minute facial by Danette Waymire. We loved both! What a relaxing way to spend the afternoon. The Woodhouse offers over 10 types of massages that can be customized to your preference. We chose the deep muscle massage. Now take 3 deep breaths and R-E-L-A-X as you inhale scents of lavender, sage and chamomile to begin your calming entrance into this therapeutic full body massage. Ryan used Serene bath and body oils, Armica gel and even Biofreeze gel during the massage. The products complimented his strategic strokes used to increase circulation and relieve muscle tension, strain and stress. Before you know it, you are brought out of your wonderland experience with three more deeps breaths of those same intoxicating scents. Is this really over? WHAH!!!

There are also several types of facials to choose from here! We went with the award winning Woodhouse Signature Minkyti facial. This treatment incorporates steam, kiwi cleanser, cranberry gommage, wine mask, cranberry toner, ytpore extraction, chamomile balm, eye serum and a liquid crystal product. The Woodhouse Day Spa carries exclusively the Arcona all-natural product line out of Santa Monica. Ooh la la, the scents alone are an experience! Not only do you receive a facial massage using the Minkyti technique, but Danette also massages your neck, shoulder, arms and hands. It’s quite an experience!! We also received a skin care analysis. Between the wonderful aromas, the soothing music, the massaging and the low lighting, we couldn’t have been more relaxed. We were in our happy place!
Chelsey Crawford and Shelby Jenkins pamper Chalene and Rachel with pedicures at ReedaTodd Salon at the Geist Marina.
Following our amazing services, we were led to the beautiful quiet room where we indulged in lemon and cucumber waters and delicious detoxifying cinnamon tea. We lounged by the fire in our Woodhouse robes as we flipped through the magazines and chatted about which services we would request on our Christmas list! And it’s getting long!! Make sure you ask about how to get your fab robe for free during the month of December! Thank you to all of the staff at The Woodhouse Day for treating us to such a wonderful day! We will definitely be back! Next stop was ReedaTodd Aveda Lifestyle Salon/Spa where we wanted to check out more great gift ideas for everyone on your list! Located at the Geist Marina, ReedaTodd carries the always-intoxicating full Aveda product line. Love walking in here and getting a whiff of all their fabulous scents! Owned by Tom Beam and managed by Sarah Burke, this beautiful spa is staffed by graduates of the Aveda Frederic’s Institute. Overlooking Geist Reservoir, indulge in a gift for yourself or special someone. Color and cut services also include a very relaxing hot towel facial for men, and ladies receive a wonderful hand massage as you take in the sparkling Geist Reservoir views. ReedaTodd offers exceptional hair salon services including extensions, along with manicures, pedicures, massages and facial treatments. Since you really can never go wrong with a relaxing pedicure, we settled ourselves into posh chairs and enjoyed a glass of wine whilst our toes relaxed in a
copper tub filled with rosemary mint hand and body wash. Our service providers, Chelsey Crawford and Shelby Jenkins, couldn’t have been more amiable as they worked their magic soaking, shaping, buffing and painting us some beautifully groomed feet and toes! We even chose to use a Shellac polish to keep our tootsies looking great on into the holiday season! Of course, now we will have to wear open-toed shoes to all our Christmas parties to show off our treatment! Okay, maybe only one or two! As we sipped our wine, we chatted about our favorite Aveda products. We especially like the Pure Abundance Style Prep line to give your hair new life and Aveda’s amazing StressFix body lotion. It’s their strongest selling body care line and claims the “clinically-proven stress-relieving aroma” is derived from French-sourced lavender, Lavandin and Clary Sage from small organic farms. It’s truly an amazing product! You’ve just got to try it out! ReedaTodd makes it easy to pop in and grab their full line of award-winning products for yourself or anyone on your gift list! Make sure you ask for our cutie pie girls, Chelsey and Shelby, as they are fully trained in cut and color salon services as well. Thank you, ReedaTodd, for the most enjoyable experience! We really enjoyed our escapes at The Woodhouse Day Spa and ReedaTodd Aveda Lifestyle Salon/Spa and hope you’ll go check them out! There are many other boutique spas offering hair and body services in our area. With so many options in the Geist area, you’re sure to have an easy time fulfilling all your holiday wish lists right here in our own backyard! DECEMBER 2013

Decorating the Home for the Holidays | Donna Marino
It’s that time of year when our families all come together to share our wonderful holidays. What better time to transform your home into its best celebration mode!
NEWSLETTER | DECEMBER 2013

Here are but a few suggestions to give your home a cozy and festive glow: • Dress up the front door with a floral wreath or colorful holiday arrangement and light the walkway with luminaries or plenty of outdoor lighting. • The foyer deserves special attention since this is where first impressions are made. The front hall must be welcoming with good lighting and perhaps a holiday arrangement on the hall table. Mirrors and candlelight will brighten a foyer nicely, and a rich oriental rug can add a luxurious touch. Perhaps this is the year to consider an elegant wall covering in your entryway. Holidays are the time of year to display your most elaborate accessories in all their glitzy glory. • Since family and friends usually settle into the living or family room, careful attention should be paid to the arrangement of your furniture. Is the furniture grouped for the best conversational arrangement? Is there plenty of room to traverse the area? Are there easily accessible places for elderly guests to sit? • In the dining room, your goal should be a stimulating ambience for dining, conversation and fun. Drape the table with festive holiday linens. For an enchanting combination, cover your table with two tablecloths – a richly colored solid base cloth topped with a beautiful sheer cloth sprinkled with “sparkly things” appropriate for the holiday. The centerpiece should be special but low-profiled since you

don’t want it to be a detriment to conversation; candlesticks are perfect. Mixing and matching your china and silver pieces can be a charming and eclectic way to enjoy those special heirlooms. • If your family likes to gather in the kitchen (and whose doesn’t?), make sure there are attractive accessories such as bowls of fruits, candies, pastries or flowers in view. Keep a kettle of Aroma Punch (see recipe on page 68) on your range top to provide that special holiday aroma throughout your home. • If you will have overnight guests, make them feel welcome by enhancing the guest room with fresh flowers or potpourri. Holidaythemed throw pillows on the bed add a cozy dimension. A good reading light and water carafe by the bed are thoughtful touches. Remember to put out plush towels and extra toiletries for your guests. There are dozens of ways to make your guests and family feel at home for the holidays. Put your own family’s customs into everything you do. Preparing to welcome friends to your home is a lot of fun and ensures a memorable visit for you and your special guests.

Geist Entrepreneurs Empower Business Leaders
| Lynda Hedberg Thies According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, women entrepreneurs will create as many as 5.5 million new jobs across the country by 2018, more than half of the total new small business jobs expected to be created during that time and about one-third of the total new jobs anticipated. And if Geist entrepreneurs and business owners Billie Dragoo and Carol Curran have anything to do about it, Indiana will be leading the way. Their vision five years ago for a statewide conference became reality November 5 when the Inaugural Indiana Governor’s Conference for Women was hosted by Governor Mike Pence. Billie, Conference Co-Chair and President and CEO of RepuCare, Inc., and Carol, Committee Chairwoman and Moderator as well as Founder, President and CEO of Phoenix Data Corporation also located in Geist, played key roles in the development of the Midwest’s largest educational event for businesswomen and entrepreneurs. The event brought together 57 bestselling authors, legendary venture capitalists and dozens of nationally and internationally-known businesspeople including Martha Stewart and Charlotte Beers. A direct result of this level of collaboration is the development of new partnerships and initiatives that will serve as an economic model for Hoosier women business owners and leaders as well as women around the country. One new partnership announced at the conference was a new crowdfunding initiative that will be open to all Indiana women entrepreneurs. This venture is backed by Elevate Ventures, Indiegogo, ExactTarget Foundation and NAWBO. “This partnership is exactly the type of collaboration we hoped this conference would generate,” said Deborah Collins Stephens, Co-Chair. “Crowdfunding democratizes the process of getting cash into women entrepreneurs’ hands.” As an entrepreneur, Carol knows firsthand how difficult obtaining funding can be and is passionate that this initiative is a game changer.

With Billie appointed as the National Board Chair for 20132014, Indianapolis will play host to the National NAWBO Conference in the fall of 2014, attracting more than 2,000 members from around the nation. Also on tap in January is a groundbreaking and exciting afterschool program called the Young Entrepreneurs Academy for middle and high school students. There are many new and exciting initiatives that will be unveiled in the coming months. Indiana will lead the way with involvement from these two visionary Geist leaders. Lynda Hedberg Thies is a freelance writer, entrepreneur and Executive Regional Vice President with Arbonne International for over 10 years. A lifelong Indianapolis resident, she is married with two children. What she loves most about her experience is making a difference to others and her community.
