WE CHANGE LIVES As a health services researcher, I know the importance of education. At Geist Fitness, I am confident in my trainer s ability to not only deliver results, but to keep me safe thanks to their unmatched Exercise is Medicine™ credential. With a family history of osteoporosis, I know I need high quality resistance training. I also want to be able to do the things I truly en oy, like hiking in high-altitude areas which the trainers at Geist Fitness have definitely helped me with. I have lost over 20 pounds training at Geist Fitness 3 times per week and refining my diet with the assistance of my expert trainer. I feel great on the trails but most of all, my training helps me to cope with my daily life demands and to sleep soundly! -Teresa D. Following my retirement, I discovered cycling and became an avid cyclist. Cycling helped me stay in shape into my 60 s but I still experienced some back pain and arthritic shoulder pain. These issues led me to Ben, my Pilates Reformer instructor at Geist Fitness. I recently began Pilates Reformer and Ben s unique approach has already yielded significant results, including overall core strength. My oint mobility program at Geist Fitness was specifically-designed to address my sti ness and it is undoubtedly working. The progress I ve experienced so far is exciting and I know it will pay dividends on the bicycle. Whenever I recommend Geist Fitness to friends and I often do I always start by telling them this place is the fitness center version of the emotionally warm bar in Cheers. If you re looking for a private club that fits your lifestyle, I d suggest Geist Fitness. And while you re there, say hi to Rikki, the gym s Golden Retriever. -Alan W.

SCIENCE DAY IS “OUT OF THE BOX” EXPERIENCE FOR HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN SCHOOL STUDENTS Writer / Allie Nash
Holy Cross Lutheran School students got an “out of the box” experience at Science Day on Nov. 7. The idea to start Science Day came when a lot of girls at the school were not enjoying science or wanting to be involved, but Geiger said that has changed.
Carpenter answered students’ questions, like “How does an engine work?” and “Do you like dogs?” “It’s always fun for me to come and visit schools. As a parent of three, I understand the importance of a good education because I was fortunate to get an education that a lot of drivers don’t get. “But he said that visiting a school on Science Day was especially important. “We can give them a glimpse to what may seem boring in class or school,” he said. “They get see how it relates to the real world and how you can do something really cool and really fun with it. Hopefully it will make them see what they are doing can be really fun someday.” Younger students rotated through Science Day stations that consisted of experiments and activities. Parent volunteers with a career or background in science ran many of the stations. The older students, including seventh and eighth graders, learned about friction and force from doing an Amazing Race-like activity.
“I had a parent of a fifth grade girl tell me that her daughter wanted a “Science Day helps students associate fun with science and job in science,” Geiger said. “And when her mom asked her why, she learning,” said Principal Karen Geiger. “Everyone is playing, from said it was because of Science Day.” 2-years-old to eighth graders, and they are all gaining something.” This was the fourth year for the school to host Science Day. The focus of the day was movement, friction and force. To help students understand science, Indy Car owner and driver, Ed Carpenter, told them how it plays a large role in his car and his success.
But Geiger did have a goal for the day. “We want them to want to figure something out and [know] that they can; to have a love for science and a passion for learning.”

DUCKWALL FORD DEALERSHIP Documented with Historic Photos Writer / Janet V. Gilray
Most car and truck enthusiasts can immediately state their preference. But this never stops a Ford or Chevy dealer from working to win a change of heart. Therefore, even at a time when Indiana boasted nearly a 100 independent manufacturers of the newfangled, ‘horseless carriage,’ a dealer of each persuasion had already set up shop in the heart of Noblesville. Who dealt in these two classics back in the day? Hare Chevrolet and Duckwall Ford. Hare Chevrolet’s story is well documented in Hamilton County by local historians. According to a 2009 Car and Driver Magazine article, Hare is the oldest ‘purveyor of vehicles’ in the entire United States. The article details how in 1847, 22-year-old Wesley Hare began manufacturing wagons and buggies from his log cabin near downtown Noblesville. And when at the turn of the century Wesley Hare’s son Elbert Hare began managing the firm, it grew to occupy one of the town’s largest buildings, as the company produced some 700 carriages per year. But now, the question still remains. Who sold all the Fords? Leading the automotive industry since 1906, even baring the fact that there were more than 200 makers in the nation, the Ford Company was the maker of America’s top selling automobile. Customers flocked in droves to purchase the top selling Model T, at an approximate cost of $400 (or $9,440 when adjusted for inflation). In the first year, 8,720 units were produced with over half a million cars pouring off the moving assembly line. A decade later, somebody was selling Fords — and a lot of them!

According to Kent Duckwall, manager of the Geist and Morse Marinas, the owner of the Ford dealership was his grandfather, Walter Duckwall. As evidence, Duckwall toggles through an archive of nearly 200 black and white photos he has had scanned into his computer. With haunting quality of the black and white time period, street scenes from the early 1900s emerge from a century gone by. Shiny new tractors parade along Conner Street. A large array of Model Ts hug the 8th Street curb. Sleek mules and stylish pedestrians promenade close by the square. Ever present is a backdrop of familiar buildings as they may exist today — mixed with many long gone.
But luckily Duckwall was close to one family member that would leave him a piece of history.
One notable set of structures are partnered, side-by-side, on the west side of 8th Street, south of Conner, catty-corner to Central Square. The similarly-styled, brick structures feature stair-stepped facades, and each are embedded with a name and date in the upper reaches. High atop the building to the south, a square of limestone is inscribed ‘C.O. Hare, 1924’. To the north, next door, the building features not one, but two limestone squares. The one on the left is inscribed “W. Duckwall, 1917.” A stone on the right is carved, “Ford Sales and Service.” Many other structures in the photo collection are now but ghosts, lost to the years. But, anchoring the dealerships, diagonally across Conner Street, proudly stands the sheriff ’s residence as it does so today.
“I knew my grandfather’s daughter, my Aunt Dorothy [Dorothy Duckwall Stewart], a little better. She lived almost 100 years,” Duckwall said. “Before she died, she gave me a box of photos. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but when I started going through them last year, I was pretty dumbfounded by the explosion of history in that carton. If an individual or organization wanted to view my collection, I’d be happy to show them.” In an attempt to find another piece of the W. Duckwall and Ford Sales & Service puzzle, a search in the Indiana Room of the Hamilton East Public Library was made, but turned up nothing. County Historian David Heighway, who works at the Hamilton East Public Library, believes the Duckwall discovery is significant.
Who was Walter Duckwall? Where did he start his business and where did he go? Beyond the black and white photo archives so recently come to light, very little is known.
“This is a part of the city that was not photographed very often,” Heighway said. “There is a possibility that this collection may have images of the Dorman store [which had been the Wainwright Hotel] and the Judge Stone House. Having this as a resource will be a big benefit to people who want to study and preserve historic buildings in the area.”
“I know very little about my Grandfather Duckwall,” says Duckwall. “I was only 7-years-old when he passed away. He had two brothers and two sisters but all the family are gone or moved away. I wish I’d paid more attention to their stories and asked questions while they were still alive.”
Given that Duckwall’s photographic archives could provide researchers with an important look at turn-of-the-century buildings surrounding the dealership, the Hamilton East Public Library is considering a future display of these photos in the library’s Indiana Room, when and if the details can be arranged.

LIGHTING THE WAY TO SOBRIETY When Amy Temple walked through the doors of The Salvation Army’s Harbor Light Center in April 2013, it was not her first attempt to conquer addiction. This time, though, would be different.
addiction, but each time she would fall off the wagon. “It’s true what they say about life getting worse and worse each time an addict goes back out,” she said. “Mine certainly did. My using ran rampant and completely ruled my life.”
Amy’s story looked much like any other Hoosier’s until about 14 years ago. That’s when she underwent bariatric surgery and developed medical complications during her recovery. Prescription narcotics helped with the pain, but it wasn’t long before Amy became addicted.
After an intervention by family, Amy found herself on the doorstep of the Harbor Light Center for the third time. Though embarrassed and filled with shame, Amy was welcomed with open arms. She saw this as her last chance to reclaim her life.
The facility addresses the medical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs of its clients. From detox to 12-step classes and “I was never one of those addicts who was in denial about having a problem,” Amy explains. “That was apparent to me fairly early. My willingness to do something different and their tough love helped to make the difference.” For the first time, Amy was able to fully embrace the changes that had to be made in order to overcome her addiction. “We have so many clichés in recovery, but one of the things that’s said a lot is ‘you only have to change one thing, and that’s everything’ and that really has been true for me. I feel like everything has changed. I went from having no hope and praying to God to die every single day, to having so much hope for the future, so much hope for what God has in store for me.”
“WE HAVE SO MANY CLICHÉS IN RECOVERY, BUT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT’S SAID A LOT IS ‘YOU ONLY HAVE TO CHANGE ONE THING, AND THAT’S EVERYTHING’ AND THAT REALLY HAS BEEN TRUE FOR ME.”
Now well into her second year of recovery, Amy is still at the Harbor Light Center, but now in a supportive role. She is a Ladies Resident Assistant for the Transitional Housing Program at the facility and teaches several classes for clients going through the 12step program. As a role model for residents, she is able to encourage them in their own difficult journeys. Amy is thankful for the supportive staff at The Salvation Army who saw her through her darkest days. “I finally have some peace and serenity in my life,” she remarks, before adding, “but God both deserves and gets all the praise and all the glory for my transformation.”

A HAVEN RIGHT HERE AT HOME
Craig Sturgis, Jim Brown & Joe Wanninger at their Haven office in Fishers
Writer / Marcia Vigren
Maybe you just bought your first house, or fifth, and are wondering: What needs to be done to care for this place? Who is a credible HVAC expert that I can call? There will soon be an app for that right here in the Indianapolis area. It’s called Haven. Haven is a company that was founded in February at the Launch Fishers site by President Jim Brown, Head of Marketing Joe Wanninger and Head of Product Craig Sturgis. Each has a background that helped build the perfect combination for a computer app start-up. In Brown’s words, the idea of Haven came out of their own “frustration of being homeowners and not knowing what to do and how to take care of our homes. We have a varying degree of DIY nature in us, going from me, with none, to Craig who likes to

CALLING ALL FOODIES! Writer / Pat Carlini
Fishers resident and Small Potatoes Event Planning and Catering Owner Karen Kennedy is calling on all “foodies” to try the new Indie Indy Foodie Tours. The chauffeured tours go through four independently owned restaurants in one night, for a culinary adventure foodies won’t soon forget! “I just love it,” says Kennedy, who launched the tours in November. “It’s a win-win for all! The guests discover new restaurants and the restaurants enjoy new business. It’s a great night out for everyone!” The bubbly Kennedy is a self-proclaimed foodie who enjoys choosing the restaurants and helping with the menus for each tour. The Huntington, Ind., native spent 20 years in restaurant business in Chicago, Vermont and Indiana planning special events and operating restaurants of her own. She moved back to Indy a couple of years ago and opened Small Potatoes to cater and plan events around central Indiana. Kennedy says upon her return home, she noticed something interesting; most area residents seem to stay in their own communities when dining out. “They stick pretty close to home,” says Kennedy. “In Chicago, it was nothing to drive a half an hour to try a new restaurant but, not here. So, I came up with a way to get people out of their neighborhood and try new things– get out of their bubble!”
The foodie tour diners drive to the first restaurant then from there they are chauffeured in a luxury motor coach to the other restaurants for a house dish and sometimes a meet-and-greet with the chef and restaurant owners. The first foodie tour was planned in Carmel beginning at: Jerseys Café for Tomato Florentine Soup, J. Razzo’s Italian Restaurant & Wine Bar for homemade meatballs, fish tacos at Upland Brewing, and truffles at Chocolate for the Spirit. The tours cost $95 and include transportation, tax and gratuities. Diners buy their drinks. Indy indie foodie Tours are set to expand to Broad Ripple, Fishers, Zionsville and to Mass Ave. in 2015. Kennedy attends the tours and says she was made for this job. “There’s nothing I enjoy more than getting out and about, feeding people and throwing a good party!” Private tours are available by appointment for groups 14-32 and gift certificates are available. Special events are also planned at the Prairie Guest house in Fishers, including a Caribbean-themed New Year’s Eve party. For more information, go to smallpotatoesindy.com.

RECAP OF ST. SIMON’S 15TH ANNUAL ROYAL EXTRAVAGANZA
Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger
The numbers are still coming in, but all signs point to a smashing success for St. Simon’s 15th Annual Royal Extravaganza, The Royal Ball. This year’s event was the first time the dress code called for formal attire. The ladies dazzled in their sparkling gowns while the gentlemen looked sharp in their suits and ties. Event cochair Jennifer Keller said, “It set the tone for the entire event and made guests feel like they were at a very special event.” Live and silent auctions were at the forefront of this fundraiser, and among the hits was the Big Green Egg Backyard Experience package. The winner of this dream package scored not just the popular grill, but a mother load of items to make their next cookout a backyard bonanza. It included tons of accessories plus a $200 gift card to Archers Meats, a $200 gift card to Tasteful Times and a live performance by The Bumpus Hounds, which was donated by band member and St. Simon parishioner Matt Adolay. “Needless to say, the item was a huge hit that did really well in the Live Auction,” said Keller. But the honors for the most bid on item went to the “Vice Principal for a Day” package. The first ever Bling Ring Raffle was a great success, Keller said. The generous donation given by Distinctive Diamonds impressed everyone and they loved it. Keller said, “We plan to continue our relationship with them in the future.” More than 400 packages were available for purchase in the Silent Auction. Keller said that over 90 percent of items were sold, making the event a huge success. The crowd danced the night away to the tunes of popular local band, My Yellow Rickshaw. “They did not disappoint!” said Keller. “They had the guests dancing and singing for over two hours. They are always a crowd favorite, and I was not disappointed in my selection of having them at the event.”
Father Bill Marks (middle) thanks co-chairs of the St. Simon Annual Royal Ball Mary Williams & Jennifer Keller.
Keller and her committee would like to thank all the generous donors and the dozens of volunteers who gave up countless hours to make the event happen. They look forward to seeing everyone at the 2015 Extravaganza!

local Tree Farm Gives to Troops & Families

y first trip to Piney Acres Farm was exactly what I had envisioned upon planning the visit — a beautiful, crisp December afternoon and that indescribable holiday scent. This year, my second trip to Piney Acres Farm was on a cold and rainy Tuesday, Veterans Day coincidentally. Following the gloomy drive through Hancock County, my mood quickly changed when I arrived at Piney Acres Farm and talked to the owner, Rex Zenor, about their efforts to help U.S. soldiers and their families.

For the past seven years, Piney Acres Farm has contributed hundreds of Christmas trees to a national program called Trees for Troops. Trees for Troops is a special initiative Indiana consistently sets the standard for and Piney Acres has played a pivotal role in the process. Trees for Troops is a program of the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation, which provides free farm-grown Christmas Trees to United States armed forces members in all branches of the military and their families. The program is made possible through donations, sponsorships, grants and the work of volunteers. FedEx, a huge partner in the mission, delivers these trees to more than 60 military bases both in the U.S. and overseas. Piney Acres is one of 450 Christmas Tree growers who donate to Trees for Troops. Zenor added that Indiana is leading the way in the Trees for Troops program, calling it the “nation’s kick starter.” Each year before Christmas, the local National Guard picks up the trees from Piney Acres and delivers them to the central location in Boone County for FedEx packaging and travel. The process may experience roadblocks, Zenor mentioned, but Trees for Troops will “make sure the soldiers and families get their trees before Christmas.” To contribute to Tree for Troops, you can select a tree at Piney Acres and write a personalized note, or you can make a monetary donation online. For more information about Trees for Troops or Piney Acres Farm, check out pineyacresfarm.com or stop by their Christmas Tree farm located just three miles east of Fortville. Other local tree farms that contribute to Indiana’s leadership in the Trees for Troops program are Yakey Tree Farm in Fishers and Dull’s Tree Farm in Thorntown.

IT’S TIME TO END THE WAR ON FAT Writer / Dr. Christy Watson
How many times have you read or been told that fat is enemy No. 1 and should be avoided? Diets are simply based on calories in versus calories out and all calories were created equal. This was the message given to the public in the early ’80s. The dietary food pyramid was based on grains and carbohydrates, with little fat or protein. It was a diet that was supposed to make us healthier, to lower our risk of heart disease. Twenty years later the results are in, and the low-fat experiment was a failure of epic proportion. Americans are sicker and more overweight than at any time in history. Obesity is not just an epidemic;v it’s a pandemic. There are only three macronutrients – fat, carbohydrates and protein. Our dietary intake of them must equal a total of 100 percent. If we lower one, by definition we have to increase at least one of the others
to keep the total the same. Without fat, something had to be added. The scientific concept seemed to make some sense – if we limited saturated fats in our diet, then it would reduce “fat” in our bodies in the form of cholesterol. The idea was that we would replace saturated fats with healthy fruits and vegetables. But that wasn’t the case. Refined, processed carbohydrates and added sugars replaced fats that should have been a part of a balanced diet. These carbs were found in wheat bread, low-fat crackers and pasta. These sugars caused our blood chemistry to change, which caused us to store energy and gain weight. This also increased our hunger, which made it even more difficult to lose weight. It created a vicious cycle and has had devastating consequences to our health. How did this happen? Can fat free bread and corn be sugars? Yes, they can. To our bodies, a low fat bagel is no different than a TOWNEPOST NETWORK / DECEMBER 2014 / TownePost.com
bag of skittles. A calorie is NOT a calorie. Since 1970, egg consumption is down 21 percent and refined white sugar is down 35 percent. Yet high-fructose corn syrup is up 8,853 percent, and corn products, 198 percent. These are the processed food products that the food industry used to replace fat. In that same period, there was a 42 percent increase in calories from flour and cereals. As a result, consumers unknowingly increased caloric intake from 2,109 calories per day in 1970 to 2,586 calories in 2010. From just calories (not even the kind of calorie) alone, if those were extra calories not burned off, this would contribute to ONE pound of weight gain EVERY WEEK! And unfortunately for us, the caloric pie (unlike the macronutrients of fat, protein and carbohydrate) is not one that must remain 100 percent. If we consume more than we need, we store that energy as fat,
which goes right to our waistline. Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and high triglycerides are the result, and it happens with little to no involvement of “evil” dietary fat! So what is really going on inside our bodies in regard to proteins, carbohydrates and fats? Think of your body’s metabolism as a fire. It has to be stoked to keep the fire going. If it doesn’t, then it starts to die down. We can stoke the fire in different ways. When we give our body sugar, we get a quick burst of energy, and our body uses some of this for basic functioning of our organs. The rest – usually quite a bit – gets stored. This is quick fuel for our cells. When this quick energy is used up and put in storage, our body thinks it is starving because there is no usable energy around. It tells our brain that it needs more energy, that we are hungry; even though we just ate and there was plenty of energy there. Therefore, we are constantly hungry and storing away more energy. And we never burn the extra because we never force our body to use an alternative fuel source.
When sugars are withheld from the diet, and we stop living on quick sugar metabolism, our body quickly figures out that it needs a fuel source. It turns to the most abundant supply of energy all of us have – our fat cells! This is called nutritional ketosis. And remember, in keeping with the 100 percent total for macronutrients, if one goes down, at least one other must go up. This is where protein comes in. In simple terms, proteins have the same caloric energy as carbohydrates. But they have a drastically different effect on our metabolism. First, we actually burn some calories just digesting protein. Second, proteins provide building blocks for our cells, especially muscle. Third, and in my opinion most important, protein is the best appetite suppressant we have. Protein fills our stomach, and sends a true signal of satiety or “fullness.” Now this isn’t saying that you can eat more protein than you can burn, because it all gets stored if it is in excess, but it does not stimulate the quick sugar metabolism like carbohydrates. Where does dietary fat fit in? There has always been evidence that fat was not the

problem. The Mediterranean diet includes healthy fats like olive oil, and has been proven to have many heart-healthy and waist-healthy benefits. It is a diet espoused by reputable medical groups such as the Mayo Clinic. It has been referenced in study after study as a healthy diet. Meta-analyses of even saturated fat in the diet have failed to unequivocally prove that it alone causes higher levels of heart disease and death. On the contrary, there is mounting evidence that added sugar in the diet has a direct and linear relationship to higher levels of cardiovascular disease and death. So how can a consumer keep it all straight? How can we guide our own diets and those of our families? First, read every label. The label on the back of the package, not the one on the front from the marketing department of the food company. And know what you are putting in your body. Just for fun, journal everything you eat in a week to get an idea of your actual caloric (energy) intake, and look at where those calories come from. Are they sugars, flour, and processed foods? Finally, do a little research yourself. Don’t rely on the government, the food industry or even the diet industry to safeguard your

☐ Treat each holiday as one meal only. Do not make leftovers into several days of meals. Go back to your regular eating routine and get rid of leftovers. Remember, waste it or waist it! ☐ Continue tracking calories and exercise more than normal. ☐ Don’t skip meals before the big holiday meal. You are more likely to overeat then. Do eat small, high protein, lower calorie meals during that day. ☐ Don’t deprive yourself. If we tell our brain we can’t have something at all, we obsess over it and end up overindulging more. Instead, allow yourself a small portion of that food, so you can stop thinking about it. But be aware of overall calories. ☐ Control your stress. We all tend to overfill our lives with commitments during the holidays. Don’t be afraid to say no. The less stress you have, the and the more likely you are to continue in your normal routine and organization. LINCOLN SQUARE PANCAKE HOUSE OPENS 9th LOCATION Lincoln Square Pancake House is a staple in central Indiana. Stop by on a Saturday or Sunday morning and the full tables speak for themselves. The locally owned breakfast and lunch joint has opened its newest location in Fortville where there was once the Fortville Grill. But the building is not the only thing that transferred from the original restaurant. James Dowless, former owner of Fortville Grill, is now the most recent chef to be hired onto the Lincoln Square team.
The 11-year-old business has seen lots of growth, as Fortville will be their ninth location. And the business hopes to still grow, but Dowless has his own ideas for what the secret to success is. “The secret is the people that work here and the food is pretty amazing,” said Dowless.

uring the holidays, college students return home during their mid-year breaks to reunite with families and friends. It’s also a time when Naval Academy Midshipmen return from Annapolis and convene for the annual Indiana All Academies Ball with fellow military families from Indiana.
Navy IU tailgate
This year’s chairperson of the event, Jose Alejos, has strong ties to the military and happens to live in one of the officer’s homes at historic Fort Benjamin Harrison. Alejos enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1979 and served 10 years. Following their father’s footsteps, his sons Marco and Andres graduated from Lawrence North High School and then were accepted into the Naval Academy and West Point respectively. “It’s very difficult to get accepted at the academies,” said Alejos. “Over 60,000 high school graduates apply to the academies every year with only about 3,500 getting accepted.” Not only do applicants have to have good grades and show leadership capabilities, they also must submit letters of recommendation from U.S. Senators and Congress just to be considered for the program. Central Indiana touts a high number of active U.S. Naval Academy and Merchant Marine “Midshipmen” as well as “Cadets,” and from the other three academies including Air Force Academy, United States Military at West Point and the Coast Guard Academy. There are 280 Hoosier Cadets and Midshipmen including those attending the associated prep schools, which will be returning home during the holidays. And while Alejos and his family love to spend time with his enlisted sons, he openly admits “they are our sons, but they belong to the USA.”
COLTS OWNER SUPPORTS MILITARY
Last year during the Navy’s sequestration, Navy Midshipmen were not allowed to fly on military planes to their away football games, including the Sept. 7 game against Indiana University. Parents of the midshipmen started reaching out to military families raising money on short notice to prepare for a tailgate event. Indianapolis Colts
owner Jim Irsay was one of the first donors to help fund the tailgate event, which attracted over 1,200 people. “It was the largest tailgate ever hosted at IU,” said Alejos. Dignitaries from the U.S. Navy and Department of Defense were so moved by the outpouring of support, they attended the tailgate and signed a football to give to Irsay as a token of their appreciation. The Colts owner has also sponsored the annual Indiana All Academies Ball among other military causes and functions.
INDIANA ALL ACADEMIES BALL
Military families and applicants to the academies are invited to the annual ball on Dec. 26 at The Crane Bay Event Center, located at 551 W. Merrill St. in Indianapolis. Justice Steven David will be the keynote speaker highlighting an evening featuring a plated dinner and dancing. For other local businesses or families that would like to support these up and coming leaders in our nation’s military, sponsorships are also available to help offset the costs. Writer / Suzanne Huntzinger
In a ceremony that took a year to plan, Boy Scout Troop 446 gathered Nov. 9 at the Golden-Burke Scout Center to dedicate the Angelo J. Peduto Memorial. The memorial honors their beloved Scoutmaster who passed away just a year ago. Nearly 200 guests gathered at the center for the event. As I arrive for the ceremony, anxious to see the finished product, I peek through the doors to get a glimpse. Getting no satisfaction from the peek, I proceed through the doors and down the path to the campfire ring that will now be known as the Angelo J. Peduto Memorial. At the groundbreaking ceremony in May, Scoutmasters Dan Rench and Johnn Marlatt unveiled the plans for the grand structure. Their description, though mostly accurate, couldn’t prepare me for what I was about to see, nor did they come close to capturing the finished product. When I see the finished memorial, I am struck by the tremendous amount of symbolism behind so many elements.
As promised, the campfire ring is the centerpiece. Enormous stepping stones lead the pathway toward the ring. The first stepping stone is in the shape of a heart, just like the one Angelo gave his wife, DeeDee, for their 10th wedding anniversary. The second stone, I learn later, is billionyear-old puddingstone which was formed during the Ice Age in Canada and came down to Indiana during the retreat of the Wisconsin Glacier about 14,000 years ago. The final stepping stone before the brick paver walkway is etched with the Boy Scout insignia. Across the bottom of it is part of the Boy Scout motto, “On My Honor.”
of America blanket. On the back of that boulder is etched the Boy Scout law. Directly across from that boulder and facing it are three matching large sandstone boulders that represent Peduto’s family, DeeDee, Gia and Adrian. As the ceremony gets underway, it’s clear just as much effort went in to planning the celebration of Peduto’s memory. Emotions rise as those who loved him dearly recount the things he did to make scouting a better place, not just a hobby but a way of living.
Roger Pryor, former scouting father from Troop 446, explains why he flew in from North Carolina for the ceremony. He recalls Twelve massive bench-shaped sandstone boulders surround the campfire ring, a time when his son and a fellow scout were each representing one of the 12 character working to earn their Firecrafter ranking qualities each scout must embody according in summer camp, and Peduto took a week to the Boy Scout Law. They are trustworthy, off work and away from his family to coach loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, them.” If Angelo could do that for my son obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and his friend, this is the least I can do for and reverent– all of which describe the way him,” Pryor says. Peduto encouraged scouts to live their lives. Father Bob Sims, one-time pastor at St. Simon where Peduto attended, leads the crowd in Just beyond the campfire ring is a gigantic prayer. As Sims talks about who Peduto was boulder shrouded with a red Boy Scouts

as a person, he reveals that the name in Italian means “lost angel.” Sims continues describing his friend. “But Angelo was anything but lost,” he says. “He knew who he was, where he was going and what he wanted.” Native American Indians and friends of scouting, Tony Showa and Teresa Webb, are invited to play peaceful strains on the tambourine and the flute. Webb tells the crowd she is playing her song on the medicine spirit flute. “The music helps to aid in healing by bringing peace,” she says. Then, Peduto’s children take their places at the front of the arena at each side of the large stone structure shrouded by a blanket, which also bears the Boy Scout insignia. With a drum roll building, Gia and Adrian Peduto remove the blanket revealing a bronze plaque bearing their dad’s likeness. The plaque reads: “In Memory of Angelo J. Peduto, Scoutmaster BSA Troop 446, Eternal Friend of Scouting. He whom we
love and lose is no longer where he was before. He is now wherever we are.” Next, in a magical display of light, Adrian Peduto shows off his Firecrafter skills as he ignites the bonfire using the fire by friction method. First, he rubs together a bow and a spindle which he carved from a branch. While he continues rubbing, he rests the two pieces in a flatboard he made from red elm until they heat up, stopping just before it sparks. Then he carefully touches the smoking pieces to a small ball of straw called a “bird’s nest” made from separating the fibers of sisal rope. In a series of dance-like moves, he waves the nest through the air, pumping it with the oxygen it needs to combust. The audience erupts as the ball ignites, and Adrian places the nest in the ring. Within moments, the bonfire is a tower of flames, the embers flying so fast they scatter across the entire area.
As the program nears the end, Scoutmasters Rench and Marlatt express their thanks to the dozens of people who were part of making this project a reality. They describe the countless hours and the blood, sweat and tears it took for the volunteers to construct the memorial. They also take care to recognize all those who donated materials or networked and negotiated to get best pricing. More than 40 tons of stone and 180 tons of gravel make up the memorial. Peduto’s wife composes herself as she delivers the final remarks of the ceremony. “The meaning these guys put behind each piece of this memorial needs to ripple across the world,” she says. “I can’t wait for my kids to grow up, get married, bring their spouses and children to look at this and say ‘My God, this is so cool’.” Suzanne Huntzinger has a journalism degree from IU and has lived in the Geist community for 18 years.

ZOOMING & GROOMING Writer / Julie Yates
Anyone who knew Haley Brown while she grew up in Fishers knew she was an animal lover. During her childhood years, her family home was always filled with various pets. Besides having horses, there were always cats and dogs. There was even more exotic four legged creatures like guinea pigs, rabbits and ferrets. Although she excelled in math and was adept in gymnastics as a cheerleader for Fishers High School, her affinity for animals made it no surprise that she chose a career as dog groomer.
before
Brown studied Wild Life Biology at the University of Montana and considered going to veterinarian school. However, after realizing some of the tragic situations a vet might encounter, she felt like her heart might be too soft to fulfill all the duties required. With her gentle nature and ability to work with animals, pet grooming seemed like the logical choice for Brown’s dream job. After working as a groomer assistant at a pet salon for two years, Brown was hooked. She graduated from the Carmel Animal Arts Academy and went on to work in a veterinarian’s office before she found out about mobile grooming. With encouragement from her mother, Lynne Driscoll, Brown began to make her vision of opening her own mobile grooming business a reality. Together, they
came up with the name Indy Zoom Groom and found a company outside of South Bend that converts vans into pet grooming salons on wheels. Brown used the proceeds from selling her car to purchase a brand new one ton van and had it outfitted with the most modern pet grooming equipment available, complete with custom graphics on the outside. When the business opened last month, it was off and running with many appointments already booked. According to Brown, there are several advantages to having a mobile service come directly to the client. “Pets are more relaxed during the grooming process because they can see and smell their own yard from the van, versus hearing the barking of other dogs in a vet office or conventional grooming salon,” she stated. “Having the Indy Zoom Groom van come to a home provides pets with a one-to-one personal experience that they just wouldn’t get in a kennel.” Fees are based on the animal’s breed and Brown is knowledgeable about giving huge dogs, such as standard poodles, a show cut in addition to giving small, short haired dogs a trim. While not adverse to handling cats, Brown admits that they would have to be the mellow variety. One of her funniest stories is how a cat she was grooming once adhered itself to the ceiling, holding on with its claws. At the present time, Indy Zoom Groom is concentrating on serving the Fishers and Geist area. In the future, Brown is hoping to expand the business. Meanwhile, she is thrilled to be doing something she truly loves. For more information on Indy Zoom Groom, visit its website at indyzoomgroom.com. Girls About ToWn Follow us to see where we’re @ - Rachel Q. & Chalene B. -
TOWNEPOST NETWORK TAKES CHICAGO The holiday season is upon us, so what better excuse do we need to head to Chicago for some shopping and fun? With its close proximity to Indy, the Windy City and its Magnificent Mile attracts the shopping and food enthusiast in all of us! As home to the White Sox, Bulls and da Bears, Chicago really does have it all. Not to mention, it’s bordering the southern shores of the always beautiful Lake Michigan! So much to see, so much to do – but we’re short on time. Can this be done in a day? Challenge accepted! First off, to do this city properly and in Girls About Town fashion, we need a ride! Enter David Mosey with Bada Bing Limos! We need more than just a ride though — we
need a party bus. We’ve got whole a day after all! Secondly, we need some partners in crime. Who better to have a good time (while keeping us on a leash) than our very own Tom Britt. Party with the boss man! Always the ringleader, Tom brought the rest of the circus — the TownePost Network staff! Clear your calendar, grab your plastic money and fill your flask! We are heading to Chi-town! On an unusually beautiful day for November, we all gathered at Tom’s offices and boarded the swanky and stylish Bada Bing party bus. With comfortable seating for 14, our party of eight, laden with roadies and supplies, were in for a big treat!
The TownePost team arriving in Chicago via Bada Bing Limos. L-R: Austin Vance, Alyssa Sander, Toni Folzenlogel, Tom Britt, Rachel Quade, Janelle Morrison, Allie Nash, Chalene Braun
This is how you show up in Chicago! The bus had a fully stocked bar with whiskey, vodka, tequila, bourbon, and rum — all on tap! There was plenty of outlets to keep our phones charged, comfortable leather seating, fun lighting, and an awesome TV and stereo system to host our very own party! WOW! So, here’s our day in Chicago. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did! 8 a.m. (EST): We arrive at the TownePost Network headquarters. Chalene had her suitcase for the day in hand, complete with makeup, iPad, numerous phone chargers, a hat, gloves, and a change of cowboy boots. #havebootswilltravel 8:30 a.m.: The rest of the group straggles in. They were headed up by our fearless leader, Tom Britt, who was loaded down with bottles, including champagne for, you guessed it, mimosas! 9:30 a.m.: The drinking games are already underway! Don’t doubt us! The auxiliary cord for our tunes would disconnect, so we decided to drink every time the music went out. #weneedapitstop 10:30 a.m.: We are at Love’s Truck Stop. We are assigned the duty of bringing a toy to share on the bus! With so many novelty items here, we loaded back up with goodies and hit the road again! The extendable lightup bayonet was a perfect ninja accessory. 11:55 a.m.: We have arrived! Magnificent Mile — here we come! Heading straight down Michigan Avenue, we decided to stop in at Burberry. For a mere $450, we can get a walking umbrella! Luckily, it wasn’t raining, so we passed. Continuing on down the street, the girls decided to peek in La Perla. We didn’t stay here long though, as our male friends looked like creepy peeping toms as they loitered outside. We met up with a few of the many Horses of Honor that line the Magnificent Mile. Benefiting the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation, these amazing individual works of art make for fantastic Kodak moments. So of course we took a few pictures!

Lunch at the Purple Pig Shopping at Bloomingdale’s Home Enjoying wine at Eataly
12:30 p.m.: Based on the popularity among our Facebook friends’ suggestions, we headed towards the The Purple Pig on W. Illinois. Inspired by a love of pig and wine, this extremely popular hot spot makes for an unusual dining experience. After all, what happens when a pig drinks too much wine… it turns purple! The twenty-somethings are not quiiite sure what to order! Rachel passed on the highly recommended bone marrow smear, but decided she was woman enough to tackle the fried pig’s ears. Wait! Don’t dogs eat pig ears? Well, let’s just say, don’t opine until you’ve tried this bovine! Crispy fried pigs ear sliced up with kale, pickled cherry peppers, all served up with a fried egg on top. Sounds delicious, right? Well it actually was! It was fantastic! Chalene, our lactoseintolerant dairy lover, ordered the cheese plate of sheep, cow, and goat cheese — ewe calf to be kidding! This is a must have for all cheese connoisseurs. We wined and swined and finally were done with our over-the-top leisurely lunch. Oink! Oink! 2:30 p.m.: Now back to the shopping and sightseeing! Half our group heads straight for the famous “Bean” at Millennium
Park. Dubbed by Chicagoans as “The Bean” because of its legume-like shape, this stainless steel wonder is the most recognizable sculpture in Chicago. Not to mention, the most photographed and “instagrammed” of selfies because of its mirror like qualities. After you’ve knocked yourself in the bean a few times whilst capturing those selfies, keep walking and admire all the artwork in the park as you escape all the skyscrapers in the backdrop.
party, everything you could want is under this one roof. On the main floor, you’ll find all your kitchen accessories, cookbooks and an Italian grocery market. Stations of deliciousness like Nutella and gourmet baked goods caught our eye. This would be one store our kids wouldn’t complain at if they had to go shopping! Upstairs we found the “food court” of our dreams. We promise you this is like no other food court you’ve experienced! We ordered a few glasses of wine and meandered around the wine shop, The rest of us headed to the Shops and North the cooking oil section, home baked breads, fish and meat display counters. Wow. Pick a Bridge. We particularly liked Pistachio’s, a restaurant up here and enjoy your meal! We cutie pie boutique featuring handmade and guarantee you won’t be disappointed! Buon unique jewelry items! Men – your wives Appetito! Eataly is a must visit where Little would love any gift from this shop! Italy meets Martha Stewart in downtown Chicago! Our friends have great taste! 3 p.m.: The shopping group heads to Thanks for this recommendation! As one Eataly Chicago – the find of the day! This of the many painted quotes that mark the place deserves its own article, there’s so walls of Eataly says, “Life is too short to not much to experience! Our top Facebook recommended store to visit, we didn’t quite eat well.” know what we had stepped into here. It’s 4 p.m.: Just around the corner, we stopped a sensation overload when you walk into in at Bloomingdale’s Home. We loved the the two-story atrium of Eataly. You’ll be beautifully decorated Christmas trees and wowed by mirrors, chandeliers, artwork fantastic home goods you can only find at and aromas! Whether preparing a simple Bloomingdale’s. family meal or a fantastic Italian dinner

5 p.m.: As the saying goes — it’s 5 o’clock somewhere! So, we jumped in a cab and headed to Division and Rush to meet up with the rest of our group. First stop, Butch McGuire’s. This is a big, old-fashioned pub with lots of woodwork and Christmas lights year-round. With The Lodge and She-Nannigans all on the same block, Division and Rush really feels like the party section of a college campus.

7 p.m.: A visit to Chicago wouldn’t be complete without a trip to one of this town’s most famous pizza restaurants, Giordano’s. 6 p.m.: Since happy hour should always be more than just one hour, we headed further down Rush. We landed at Tavern on Rush. This was a more professional, well-dressed crowd. We enjoyed some dirty martinis across the street at Gibson’s and then headed over to Hugo’s Frog Bar. All three of these places were crowded and full of friendly people. Cheers!
