Business Spotlight
Butterfly Consignment: A Unique Shopping Experience
B
utterflies attract our attention because they represent an array of colors and eye-catching wing designs. They are gentle in nature and evolved through a process of shedding from their original form of a moth. Discovering the Butterfly Consignment upscale ladies’ boutique, located just a few blocks east of Castleton Square with their advertised theme of “Where Fashion Has Evolved,” really connects to this observation. In the “word-of-mouth” trail, shoppers have discovered a place where fashionistas gather.
So what is a bit different about Butterfly Consignment?
Butterfly Consignment has a spectacular selection of designer quality apparel, handbags, shoes, jewelry, perfumes and accessories in a variety of styles (casual to formal) and sizes (juniors, misses and plus sizes). An almost daily restocking of new items has garnered the attention of store regulars who love the opportunity to buy expensive finds, but pay much less for Butterfly’s too-good-to-be-true merchandise. 4

Helping Children at Risk from Falling Through the Cracks By J. Andy Murphy
Being a parent is an awesome responsibility. It would be wonderful if there was one book that contained all the answers to countless questions that arise on a multitude of issues relating to a child’s physical, oral communication, and social development. Unfortunately, there isn’t such a book, which makes the role of parents even more difficult as children come into the world unique in their own being. As they grow, a child’s ability to learn and function cannot always be charted under one personal growth umbrella. It’s fair to say that some children are indeed at risk of falling between the cracks, especially when it comes to uncovering issues and behavioral patterns that speak to underlying problems of development not being addressed. Many times parents, the first line of observation, can suspect that something is wrong but don’t know how to work through this nagging and, at times, unspoken concern. Small signals can indeed be sending out larger calls for help. 8

Maybe it starts with a child being a really picky eater or a kid that even at the earliest age fights you to do simple tasks. Maybe it’s the way they don’t handle social settings. Maybe it’s the attitude of not wanting to go to school or participate in verbal communication. It’s usually not just one concern, but a range of presenting issues. As we said before, each child is different. Searching all the crossroads for what’s really going on with your child can be overwhelming like a giant puzzle that needs to have all the pieces sorted before it makes sense. This is where I would like to introduce you to Ann Marie Noll, MS, CCC-SLP, Director of Outpatient Therapy Services with Theracare (TOTS) located at 9957 Allisonville Road in Fishers. Professionally, Noll is a licensed pediatric Speech Language Pathologist with over 12 years of experience with developmental teams including speech, occupational and physical therapy. The work that she and her team provide is clearly driven beyond the boundaries of standard care for
| f e b r u a r y 2 0 1 2

those children who are at risk. Noll deeply cares about her “kiddos” as she affectionately calls the children she treats as a speech therapist. “As a mother of two children, I know personally that parents who find us are looking for help in seeing what they perhaps can’t quite put their finger on in their child’s behavior. Development issues are not always blatantly obvious. When we consult with parents, we pay attention to their concerns, as well as observing the broader area of small signals the child might be sending in behavior patterns,” Noll said thoughtfully. “I believe that a mother’s instinct is a powerful resource that should never be taken lightly,” she adds. Theracare Outpatient Therapy Services (TOTS) has 3 main areas of pediatric therapy services: Speech, physical and occupational therapy. 1. Children with (speech) language delays that are not addressed early on have more difficulties with reading and academics, as well as social, peer-to-peer interactions. This delay can affect their overall behavior and, just as important, their personal confidence to communicate effectively. Speech therapy will assess a child’s speech and language skills; their oral motor strength coupled with coordination and swallowing concerns.
“Each child we treat is unique and one-on-one care is essential. We created a different approach to developing a pediatric therapy program that combines treatment with fun – children respond best when they are helped in this kind of an environment. We put together a custom tailored treatment plan designed to reach individual desired goals. It’s a kid friendly environment,” Noll said. “All too often our society attaches a stigma when it comes to perception of a child’s normal development. Fear can also plant a seed. To me, each child is a masterpiece. Sometimes it just a few more brush strokes to help a child’s whole being come to life,” she said with one of her big smiles that fits her joyful outlook on life.
2. Occupational therapy works on fine motor and sensory issues. Often times, children can struggle with handwriting skills because there are underlying tone and strength If you are a parent with concerns, don’t hesitate to call issues. Hand and eye movements are not in sync and make Theracare as complimentary developmental consultations are ordinary skills difficult to manage and control. This can available. It could make all the difference in the world to a cause behavioral problems as they struggle to focus on struggling child. learning tasks. It’s important to look at range of movement through a variety of child friendly and fun activities. A physical therapist is involved in helping a child improve their overall muscle strength, balance and flexibility.

Focus On Your Child’s Future With a CollegeChoice 529 Plan should be aware of called “CollegeChoice 529 Savings Plans.” They are unique savings plans that can provide your child with a greater opportunity for achieving success. Advice to parents and grandparents: The sooner you get started saving a few dollars each month, the more time your money will have to potentially grow. And, as an incentive, you may be eligible to receive tax benefits to help your money go farther. What is CollegeChoice 529? CollegeChoice 529 plans are education savings programs administered by State Treasurer Richard Mourdock and the Indiana Education Savings Authority. “Indiana has one of the best tax advantages in the country with our 20% state income tax credit up to $1,000 maximum credit for contributions in the CollegeChoice Plans. And, yes, I said tax credit, not deduction. I encourage all Hoosiers to begin planning early and start saving now. Although, it’s never too late to start saving as every dollar counts,” states Mourdock.
Jodi Golden is the Executive Director of the Indiana Education Savings Authority.
By J. Andy Murphy
The journey of life starts when a child is born. Parents welcome their bundles of love into the world with open arms and love in their hearts. First steps of parenting usually concentrate on providing daily emotional and materials needs for the child. As parents, we all can relate to those first hectic years. One thing that is generally put on a list way down the road is the savings path that provides for a child’s college education. They may be young now, but before you know it that little bundle of joy will be ready for college. As parents, the question is: “Will you be ready to pay for their college education?” In Indiana, we have something all parents and grandparents 16

Grandparents Can Get in Gear with a Lesson in Saving – Little by Little Grandparents can also get involved with their grandchildren by giving them a gift of saving for them through their own CollegeChoice Plan. Birthdays, holidays and special family occasions add up year -afteryear. So why not help out with a gift that will not be forgotten in a matter of time? The icing on the cake with a designated CollegeChoice529 plan is that it will not only send a powerful message to the child that Grandma and Grandpa have faith in their future dreams, but they too would be eligible for the state income tax credit based upon their contribution. The nature of this plan is that you can take each grandchild along on your savings trip starting as early as you are prepared to do so. College Choice 529 makes it easy to get started with multiple investment options and enrollment can be done online as well. There is also the ability to earn college savings on everyday purchases when you shop online, dine out and much more. It’s a choice that keeps on giving to your

from www.wzpl.com grandchild long after the candles on the cake are blown out. Studies Show… Parents’ who start talking to their child while they are young and, then take the next step by getting them involved with the process of saving, introduces the child to solid lifetime habits that will remain with them forever. Studies show that youths who have school saving plans are almost 4 times more likely to attend a 4-year-college than youths with no savings plan in place. It’s a habit well worth establishing at an early age and it doesn’t have to wreck your budget. “We have 3 great programs for Hoosiers to start their college savings in. The CollegeChoice Direct and CollegeChoice Advisor 529 Plans offer a wide range of investment opportunities with low fees and a simple userfriendly website. Both plans offer individual investment options and also an Age-Based program that automatically invests your assets based on the age of your beneficiary. Last year we also began to offer the CollegeChoice CD
Plan, which gives participants an opportunity to save through a variety of FDIC insured certificate of deposit products. It is important for Hoosiers to begin saving as early as possible. As college expenses rise yearly, every dollar counts as each dollar you save is one less dollar your loved one will walk off campus in debt with at graduation,” states Jodi Golden, executive director for the Indiana Education Savings Authority, which acts as the administrator for the CollegeChoice 529 plan. Being a parent presents many responsibilities. Not every child will go on to college for various reasons, but for those children that want to take this journey, investing in CollegeChoice 529 makes perfect sense. For more information on CollegeChoice 529 Savings Direct Plan call: 1-866-485-9415 or go to www. collegechoiceplan.com. Fishers Resident Takes the Go Red BetterU Challenge By Beth Taylor
Fishers resident, Ruthann Graham, is one of seven women selected to participate in the American Heart Association’s 12-week Go Red BetterU Challenge. As one of the faces of this year’s challenge, she hopes to inspire others by sharing her personal account of sudden cardiac arrest. On April 1, 2005, the healthy 52-year-old Graham went to work as usual. As the day progressed, she began to feel nauseous. She told the receptionist at her office that she was ill. Moments later, she was unconscious. The receptionist at Graham’s office called 911, but told the dispatcher that Graham had fainted. When the paramedics arrived, Graham had been unconscious for 45 minutes, with no pulse or heartbeat – she was clinically dead. At the hospital, doctors wrapped Graham in therapeutic hypothermia blankets to reduce her core temperature and placed her in an induced coma for four days. Her doctors prepared her husband and family for the probability that she would be in a vegetative state. “When I woke up, I didn’t know anyone, not even my husband,” Graham said. Remarkably, Graham regained her memory and has no lasting physical or mental disabilities. After she stabilized, her doctor implanted a pacemaker. She left the hospital 12 days later, feeling panicked about what might happen if the pacemaker failed to work. She spent six weeks in both physical and occupational therapy to help regain muscle tone, but gaining confidence in her pacemaker took more than a year. Due to her fears about the limitations of her pacemaker, Graham avoided exercising, which resulted in a 50-pound weight gain. Her best friend, Anne Ward, knew that Graham was struggling to regain control of her health. After seeing a news segment about how to become a participant in the BetterU Challenge, she immediately called Graham and urged her to submit an essay about her experience with sudden cardiac arrest. On Feb. 17, Graham along with the other BetterU challengers attended the annual Go Red For Women Luncheon and participated in the fashion show.
“I was thrilled to be chosen, because I needed the chance to change my lifestyle with the support of the other challengers and the tools that the program provides,” said Graham. In addition to the invaluable tools that the online program

provides to all women who register, as a featured challenger, Graham received additional health opportunities. She met with a weight management counselor and dietician from St. Vincent Health and received a three-month membership to the Y in Fishers to work with a personal trainer on a fitness regimen. Graham learned a great deal about nutrition from her weight management counselor and feels better about making educated choices about food. “I don’t count calories, I now focus on limiting sugars,” said Graham. “I’m unlearning bad behaviors and relearning good ones!” The free online program is available to all women who may start at any time. Women who register online at www.GoRedForWomen.org/BetterU can improve their health in 12 weeks. The program provides: • Step-by-step guidance to becoming healthy • 365 daily tips from expert coaches on nutrition, stress, physical activity and more • Structured long- and short-term goal setting • BetterU forum to connect with other participants • Healthy recipes

Going Big with a Little By Janet C. Streibel
Katie is someone I can talk to and call on if I need advice. We have made several pieces of pottery and we really enjoy baking cupcakes together. I struggle with math so she helps me out with my school work which has made a big difference. York, Katie’s Little Sister
Katie Pallone and York enjoy their time together at Big Brothers Big Sisters Summerfest in downtown Indy.

ig Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana (Big Brothers Big Sisters) has been matching mentors with children for forty years now. Although Big Brothers was first established in the 60’s followed by Big Sisters in the 70’s, both organizations operated separately until combining forces in 2002. Currently, there are over 800 youth already established in mentoring relationships through this program. Big Brothers Big Sisters will create 400 more connections this year. This means this organization will match at least one child to a mentor each day of the year. “I’ve always been inspired by the stories of parents and caregivers who contact Big Brothers Big Sisters,” says Darcey Palmer-Shultz, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana. “It takes a lot of love and a lot of courage for parents to ask for help, and it’s an amazing

demonstration of how much our parents believe in their kids that they contact Big Brothers Big Sisters to be a part of their family. We consider it an honor to take those calls.” Many different family situations require the need for a mentor, such as a family that is dealing with some health issue or a single parent. Darcey reminds us, “Big Brothers Big Sisters is proven to have positive academic, socioemotional and behavioral outcomes for youth who face adversity. We are a research backed, evidence-based program. Our standards are high, and our practices are exemplary. We take our work very seriously and are honored to work with so many amazing families, volunteers, and supporters…There are always more boys ready to be matched with mentors, so we especially need more male mentors and Big Couples.”

Mentoring Opportunities Close to Home Katie Pallone: Big Sister to York Katie Pallone, of Carmel, has been a Big Sister to 11 year old York, for two years now. “York is very creative,” says Pallone who works as a Financial Advisor at La Salle St. Securities and has served as a board member for Big Brothers Big Sisters for three years. “I have taken York to paint pottery, decorate cupcakes, and other places that bring out her creativity.” Pallone has even taught York how to swim. York sings in choir and plays the cello. Someday, she wants to move to California and become a singer.
of the most memorable experiences was the day they went to pet the dolphins at the Indianapolis Zoo. Ever since, this exciting day, Will has been talking about going to college to become a veterinarian or oceanographer. He also plans to play professional hockey someday. Quesenberry offers his inspirational message to anyone thinking about becoming a big brother. He says, “This is a very reputable program. If you want to give back and have a positive influence, it feels good to help out.” Also, he likes the flexibility. “It’s not like we have to meet at a certain time and day of the week. We can schedule our activities whenever it works out best for our individual schedules… this program allows you to provide a good aspect in a child’s life that he might not otherwise have.”
“I try to instill tradition whenever I can within our activities” says Pallone who has decorated gingerbread houses and carved pumpkins with York. They have even helped out at the Fishers Food Pantry at P R United Methodist Church and then treated themselves to cupcakes afterwards. Pallone recalls one of her favorite family traditions when her mom would make her homemade cookies on the first day of school. Even in HE college, her mom would send her cookies to celebrate the new beginning of the school year. Likewise, Pallone has also taken York cookies on the first day of school to carry out this special custom.

We have not been together very long, but so far we have done lots of fun things such as bowling and putting together puzzles. I always come home from our outings very happy. Nathan, Matt’s Little Brother
Matt Cohen, (Big Brother) takes his Little Brother, Nathan, to Climb Time, as one of their weekly visits.
Matching Personalities & Interests Incredibly Well Matt Cohen: Big Brother to Nathan Matt Cohen is a father of two and lives in Carmel. Before becoming a big brother to Nathan, a few months ago, he cleared it with his children who were open to sharing their dad, so he can help serve the community. Nathan comes from a middle-class family with two parents who care about him greatly. They are so consumed with the two older siblings who have medical conditions that they guided Nathan to Big Brothers Big Sisters so that he could receive more personal attention and mentorship. “Nathan has really wowed me with some of his quoted facts and concepts about science and technology,” says Cohen who shares many of the same interests. It’s no wonder that Nathan is in the gifted program at school. Some of their “brotherly” activities so far, have included going bowling,
playing arcade games, getting frozen yogurt and assembling a Star Wars puzzle together. Reflecting back on his personal life, Cohen reveals, “After losing my job in July, I had time to shift my focus from myself to realizing that others have more difficult situations than me. I began to see that it makes perfect sense to offer up my assistance to others in the community.” Cohen has since started a non-profit educational organization called Project Lead the Way, where they provide STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) curriculum in middle/ high schools across the nation. Cohen marvels at how well Big Brothers Big Sisters has done with connecting him and his little brother, Nathan. “They did such a tremendous job. They did as much research as possible with matching Nathan to my background, interests, job, and activities.”

Rick and Shirley have introduced me to new things. I didn’t even know I liked classical music before Shirley and Rick took me to the Palladium in Carmel. We have gone to different restaurants and tried new foods together. They offer me academic advice. I was struggling in Biology and with Shirley and Rick’s help, I was able to raise my grade by an entire letter! They are both very dependable and I know I can ask them anything or call on them if I need to.

Mentoring as a Big Couple: Twice as Nice Shirley and Rick Altstadt: Big Couple to Allen
Go to www.bebigforkids.org to volunteer or to support Big Brothers Big Sisters. If you are unable to mentor, then you can give a gift that helps connect a mentor with a child.
Shirley and Rick Altstadt, of Carmel, are a” Big Couple” to 16 yr. old Allen—meaning that together, they mentor him as a team. Actually, Shirley began mentoring Allen (solely) when he was in third grade as part of the school program. She would have lunch with him weekly. Eventually, this progressed into a “Big Couple relationship” (Shirley and Rick), just before Allen started sixth grade. “Allen lives with both his parents and his mom used to be a little.” says Rick. “Her experience was so positive that she wanted to extend this opportunity to Allen. Shirley and Rick, whose two daughters are grown, have enjoyed their time with Allen. They have taken him to the Carmel Palladium, and to Chicago (as part of an organized trip and one of many, by Big Brothers Big Sisters.) They have also frequented various sports-themed places like the bowling alley and the Colts game. Allen, a freshman, plays football, basketball and runs track. Shirley and Rick attend most of his sporting events. “It doesn’t matter what age you are as a mentor,” says Shirley. “Each generation gives a child a different perspective of life.” Let’s face it. Every child can benefit from more adults who believe in them, inspire them, and help them discover their possibilities. february 2012 |

Bob encourages me to behave and do well in school by teaching me manners and helping me with school work. We also enjoy going to Colts games, playing golf and doing other sporting activities. I really like having him as a Big Brother. He is a role model to me. Ziah, Bob’s Little Brother
Bob Tollini (Big Brother) recently took his Little Brother, Ziah, to the top of Monument Circle during Super Bowl week.
Experiencing Indianapolis Through a Young Person’s Eyes Bob Tollini: Big Brother to Ziah Bob Tollini, of Geist, has served as a big brother to three boys over the last twenty-three years. He is now mentoring his fourth little brother, 11 year old Ziah, who loves History. Tollini can tell you everything you’d ever want to know about the sites to see right here in Indy. He has taken his little brothers to experience culture and so much more. Some places they have seen are The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, the Indiana State Museum with IMAX theatre
and Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center. They have also visited the NCAA Hall of Champions and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art. In addition, they have played basketball and baseball—both sports that Ziah loves to play. Plus, they’ve attended many games of different sports. “I’ve been doing this for twenty-three years now and it is fun,” says Tollini who was awarded “The Unsung Heroes Award” in mid-December by the Indianapolis Rotary Club for his dedicated commitment to helping others in the community. He continues, “Being a mentor isn’t work. You enjoy it. You get to see much of what Indianapolis has to offer through a young person’s eyes. It reminds you of when you were a kid. You can see how different the kids are from you as they’re living in a different culture and environment.

Changing Lives for the Better Here is what some of the Big Brothers and Big Sisters are saying about how their Littles have changed their lives: “My experience as a Big has been rewarding, fun and educational! I get to not only play a positive role in a child’s life, but have a lot of fun doing it. Everyone involved in the entire process, has been nothing but great. I can see myself being a part of this program for a long time!” Ryan Quesenberry “It has changed my life adding another dimension where I feel I am giving to the community, helping to shape a person and getting back a lot from him. I love being around this young person and I like how he shares information with us.” Shirley Altstadt, Big Couple “Without the involvement of Allen, my association with young kids would be limited. I’m learning about what kids are doing today, their culture, and how he deals with everything.” Rick Altstadt, Big Couple “Becoming a Big Brother has been a personal lifeenhancing episode. It has allowed me to begin sharing my life experiences with a bright young individual and forged a relationship I know will last for a very long time.” Matt Cohen, Big Brother
“One quote that truly sums up my experience thus far with York and Big Brothers Big Sisters is from Ralph Waldo Emerson, ‘It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another Katie Pallone, Big Sister without helping himself.’” “Being a mentor is not a one-way street. You don’t just give to the community but you get something out of it as well.” Bob Tollini, Big Brother If you would like to make a difference in the community and lend your mentorship to someone in need, consider becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister. This may be the perfect way to fill a void in your life. Perhaps you never had the opportunity to have children or you have always wanted to help guide a young child to realizing his/her full potential. Whether you mentor someone as a “Big Couple,” or you go solo, either way, you can help discover new meaning in someone’s life—including your own. Go to www.bebigforkids.org to volunteer or to support Big Brothers Big Sisters. If you are unable to mentor, then you can give a gift that helps connect a mentor with a child. City of Fishers?
Debate Over Reorganization Plan Goes to State Supreme Court
I
n 1990, the Town of Fishers was an exit off of I-69 with a McDonalds, gas station, and only 7,200 residents. According to 2010 census data, the town has grown to 76,794 residents, nearly 10 times the size in just 20 years. In the Indianapolis metro area, Fishers is second in size only to the City of Carmel which has 79,191 residents. With this in mind, a group of Fishers residents thinks that it’s time for Fishers to change from a town form of government to a city. Spearheaded by Geist resident Joe Weingarten, “City Yes” collected 1,700 signed petitions asking the Town of Fishers to put the question on the ballot in the form of a referendum last Fall. Petitions were filed in May of 2010, and three days later the Fishers Town Council announced they were going to reorganize, buying them six months to propose an alternative plan. During that time, the Town of Fishers commissioned an independent study group to look at ways to consolidate local government and possibly reorganize. In December 2010, the Town Council proposed and adopted their reorganization plan, which on the surface seemed like a step in the right direction. However, buried in the details of the plan were some changes that take away the rights of voters to elect their own city mayor and appoints the current town council members as the city’s first council members.

Plaintiffs in the Indiana Supreme Court case against the Town of Fishers (left to right) Joe Weingarten, Glenn Brown and Mike Kole.

Some Fishers residents are crying foul. Weingarten, along with fellow Fishers residents Mike Kole and Glenn Brown, took their grievances to the Indiana Supreme Court. Local Geist resident Steve Greisemer, an attorney with Lewis & Kappes, PC, is representing the residents of Fishers. “We would be perfectly fine with the reorganization plan,” said Greisemer, “if we only had the voting rights that came along with being a city. If this holds up, we’d be the only city in the State of Indiana that has a city council voted at large with an appointed mayor.” Mark Crandley, attorney for the Town of Fishers, claims that Indiana Code 361.5-1, also known as the “Reorganization Act,” gives the Town the ability to change elected positions into appointed positions or vice versa.
city should be able to elect the mayor,” said Mike Kole, a plaintiff in the case. The issue of becoming a city will be on the ballot in November in the form of two questions. The first will be whether or not the Town should adopt a Class II city per the petitioners’ request last year. The second will be whether or not the Town should adopt the “modernized” city plan. Weingarten feels that having two questions will only lead to confusion and result in neither being adopted. Updates will be posted to atGeist.com as they are made public.
“By and large, the study group found that most residents are comfortable with the current town style of government,” said Crandley during his Indiana Supreme Court testimony. “The residents don’t want radical change.” Town government structure allows for town council members to be voted in at large, and then those town council members nominate and choose the town council president. Currently Scott Faultless, a 16-year town council member, is the town council president. In a second class city form of government, according to Indiana Code 36-4-5-2 and 36-4-6-3(i), officials are elected by their own districts, not at large, and the mayor is then voted on by all the voters in the city.
Proven expertise for uncertain markets. FEE-ONLY PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT SERVICES FOR INDIVIDUALS AND INSTITUTIONS
“This is how every city in the State of Indiana elects their mayor,” explains Greisemer. Faultless contends that the Reorganization Act, which was legislated a few years ago in the Indiana State assembly, gives Fishers the ability to create what he calls a “modernized” or “hybrid” form of a Class II city. Under the Town’s current plan, the current Fishers town council would appoint themselves as the first city council and then they would appoint the mayor.

Goodwill Opens New Geist Location By Pat Carlini
A new Goodwill store opened it’s doors in Geist/Fishers on Valentine’s Day to a group of eager shoppers and a burst of new snow! “I was a little worried the snow would scare away shoppers for our grand opening!” says Cindy Graham, Vice President of Marketing. “But, that wasn’t the case. We had more than 30 people in line and several more waiting in their cars.” The new 15,000 square foot store is located at 11501 Geist Pavilion Drive, near 116th Street and Olio Road, in the former home of Party Tree. It is the 47th Goodwill retail store in central Indiana, 8th in Hamilton County and brand new to the Geist/Fishers area. Why Geist? Graham says Goodwill looks for a couple of things when scouting out a new area for a retail store. “We want to see residential growth like we still see throughout the Geist/Fishers area and we need people with stuff that they want to donate!” laughs Graham. Vice President of Marketing Cindy Graham inside the new Fishers/Geist retail store near Olio Road and 116th Street.
But, that is how Goodwill works, donations are accepted daily at Goodwill stores and the items are then sorted and put up for sale. Employees are hired to work the retail stores

Goodwill Store 11501 Geist Pavilion Dr. Fishers, IN 46038 www.GoodwillIndy.org and revenue generated from the sale of the goods helps fund education and services in central Indiana for adults and youth. At the Geist/Fishers Goodwill store, as in other Goodwill retail stores, several employees were hired from the area. “We have 50 employees here at the new Geist/ Fishers store,” says Graham, “26 of them are from the area.” Along with putting some local residents to work, the new Goodwill store offers around 90,000 pieces of modern and vintage designer clothing, household items, furniture, books and toys. There’s even a full rack of swimwear in the front of the store — it’s never too early to think Spring! Graham says their shoppers know they’ll find quality, brand name merchandise at a fraction of the price. “That’s what makes it so great shopping at Goodwill,” says Graham, “not to mention the thrill of the hunt!” Goodwill uses a color coding system that shows shoppers the original price and then the discounted price after a period of time. “Items are discounted until they sell,” explains Graham. “We don’t throw items away.” Reward cards are also offered at the new store, donations can win you prizes! Store and Drive-thru Donation Center hours are 9am to 9pm Monday – Saturday and 11am to 7pm on Sunday. Welcome Goodwill!

Cooking up a New Look
Before
W
hen the Foxworthy family decided to cook up something new with their kitchen décor, they knew they had to start with their kitchen cabinets.
“We were tired of the home’s original light birch wood cabinets,” says Heather Foxworthy. “The cabinet doors had a glaze on top that made them look pink,” she added. The couple shopped around for new cabinets and then turned to a company called Furniture Fix that specializes in refinishing wood furnishings. They were open to all suggestions that would help them with this remodeling project.
After cabinet doors. The doors would be removed from the living area and stained outside the home for less mess. The cabinetry frame is then stained and will be dry by the time the cabinet doors are returned. Within a couple of days, the doors were finished with the staining process and brought back in a new color. The look completely gave this kitchen a whole new feel and atmosphere. “You even pick the sheen you want for your cabinets,” says Heather who says the family loves the new, rich look of the kitchen.
Lisa Murdock with Furniture Fix told the Foxworthy family there are options when it comes to changing the look of your kitchen cabinets, without draining your wallet with brand new cabinets.
For this project, trim was added for a more high end finished look, as well as a glass tile backsplash, new countertops and a new sink and faucet. Voila! It was a brand new kitchen for the Foxworthy family.
“We can paint dark cabinets to popular “old world white” finish, or stain light-colored wood cabinets to a deep rich cherry. We have multiple options of colors available and it all depends on your own personal choice,” says Lisa. Heather was thrilled about the idea of darkening her light cabinets. “I liked the option that we could have a custom stain and not have to pick one from a chart,” she said.
For more information on refinishing kitchen cabinets, you can go to www.furniturefixllc.com or, “Invest in Your Nest” on atGeist.com.

New Foot Massage Salon Opens in Geist By Pat Carlini
massaged, the whole body is affected. For example, rubbing your toes may help clear your sinuses while massaging the inner arches of the feet may improve an upset stomach.
Do you have tired achy feet after a long day at work? Or, have your been training for the Geist Half Marathon and would like to pamper your feet after a workout? Well, you might want to put your tired feet in the hands of the experts at the new “Foot Finesse” – a Chinese foot massage salon now open in the Geist/Fishers area at the 116th Street and Olio Road Kroger complex.
In the lobby of Foot Finesse you will find it all mapped out for you, written in both Chinese and English. Healing effects aside, you will no doubt enjoy the experience. The salon has a Zen-like atmosphere with wood floors, open rooms, and comfortable red chairs that fold all the way back for the massage.
It is a comprehensive foot rub that extends well past the feet into the back, neck, head and shoulders. You will enjoy an hour long massage at the great low price of $25. You can’t beat it for the value as well as the pleasure! The Chinese foot massage concept dates back 5,000 years, but with the renewed interest in Refloxology based massage, it has been gaining in popularity all over again.
Your journey begins with a foot soak in a wooden tub filled with hot water that is loaded with herb extracts. While your feet soak, you will enjoy the massage of your head and temples. The great foot rub is followed by back and neck massage. You feel relaxed yet invigorated at the end! This is not your traditional “how would you like the pressure” massage, but rather a well-planned, deep, assertive massage. It is a ritual the practitioners seem to know well and it is best to go with the flow and enjoy! There is a translator on site to help out with questions or concerns. The Foot Finesse salon is open 7 days per week from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Walk-ins are accepted and appointments are available. You can learn more by calling 570-2018 or visiting www.perfectfootfinesse.com.
The idea is that certain areas of the feet correspond with areas of the body, so, when the feet are

8 Tips to a Healthier 2012 By Jimmy Girot III
Whether you made resolutions or not this New Year, now is the perfect time to review your progress so far in 2012. Facilitating the complexity of change in any arena can be difficult and frustrating, especially within your personal life. The ability to create positive, lasting change is valuable to many aspects of our lives, from personal health to organizational leadership. As a Personal Trainer, I receive daily questions about exercise modes and nutrition— The majority of my answers usually begin with, “It depends. Realizing this, I began to think deeper about what this could mean and an overarching theme emerged; we must look at life through an unfiltered lens in order to reach our full potential. Here are 8 tips I have found helpful in creating and maintaining a healthier lifestyle: 1. Surround yourself with positive people “You are, or will become, the average of the five people you associate with the most. – Brian Carruthers, renowned Life Coach How true is this? I think about who those five people may be for me and it makes perfect sense. Across the broad spectrum of your weekly interactions, from family to co-
We’re on the corner... V’s is your neighborhood barbershop offering quality haircuts/styles and old fashioned straight edge shaves in an upscale atmosphere. What V’s never offers is a pretentious environment by hustling the latest fad and fancy – simply a relaxed, fun, and traditional experience for fathers and sons.

workers, think about how closely your actions and values align with these associations. If you want to be healthier, spend more time with people who value their health. If you want to be happier, spend more time with people who have positive attitudes. 2. Find patterns that work for YOU “Paralysis by Analysis”- This is what I often cite when someone thinks too much about what or how they should do something instead of taking action. If you discover a time that will consistently allow you to exercise, then exercise at that time—don’t worry about your “endocrine response to exercise” during that time or any other overanalyzed method. There is no “end-all” way to exercise or eat. Although research supports that certain trends are correlated with results, everyone responds to stimuli differently. 3. Think “Big Picture” Patience is crucial in creating and maintaining a healthier lifestyle. For the general population, the concept of patience is two-fold. A person in the process of creating a healthier lifestyle may become frustrated when results don’t appear in the beginning, whereas a person maintaining a healthier lifestyle may encounter a plateau in their results. An effective way to address your doubts is to regularly remind yourself the reason you have chosen a healthy lifestyle. So your progress isn’t yet visible or has stalled— Quit your regimen and you will likely regress. Be patient and work for longevity. 4. Getting out of your comfort zone This is something most people struggle with on a daily basis, myself included. While it sounds cliché, you really do “get what you put
in.” If you want specific results, both the amount of work and type of work must reflect that. For example, I played football for twelve years and throughout college, where we basically ran “forty yards at a time” (a very slow forty yards in my case). I recently registered for a 12 mile race and know that I must build mileage by running longer distances. This is a realization I’m not thrilled about! If a person is to experience personal growth in any aspect of life, he or she must have an open mind.

5. Win the day By focusing on small victories each day, we return to the concepts of patience and longevity. If a person gets just 1% better each day or each week, imagine how much that person will improve in a year. Choose to “win the day” and you will likely enjoy a less stressful daily life. 6. Have fun Few people enjoy every second of exercise but most people enjoy the results. When possible, make your training regimen fun. Whether you are training with a group of friends or trying a new type of exercise, you are more likely to be consistent if it’s something enjoyable!

7. Be confident, be stubborn These mindsets are the foundation of a successful lifestyle change. You are choosing to improve yourself, be confident. As my friends and family can attest to, I can be pretty stubborn at times. By channeling this seemingly negative attribute into a positive one, I have developed a regular training regimen. Tell yourself, “Nothing is going to interrupt my scheduled exercise today” and make it known to possible distractions. 8. Document goals and progress Record your goals and place them somewhere you will see each day — let it serve as a daily reminder. Revisit your goals each month and evaluate your progress. Becoming healthier in 2012 must be a lifestyle change. The process is just as much a psychological one as it is physical. Define your goals and relentlessly pursue them! I hope these 8 tips struck a chord with you and will help to facilitate the change you are seeking in 2012. Jimmy Girot is a fitness professional and personal trainer at Geist Fitness.
