ANN MURTLOW
PRESIDENT AND CEO OF UNITED WAY, BOARD MEMBER, BAND MATE, NEIGHBOR
Writer / Marcy Vigren
We’ve all heard of the United Way of Central Indiana. Many of us have even donated to it through our workplace. But do you really know what UWCI does and who they help? If, like most people, you don’t, you can just ask our Geist neighbor, Ann Murtlow. She runs the place. Murtlow became the 13th executive to lead UWCI in April 2013. After nearly 10 years with IPL, she decided it was time to do something new. She took six months off to travel, have surgery on her rotator cuff, and do some consulting and mentoring. She then took the job with United Way. The organization serves Marion, Hendricks, Boone, Hancock, Morgan and Hamilton counties. Since taking over UWCI, she has been busy informing the community about UWCI’s mission and new strategy, the “New U,” and is all too excited to explain how they are making a difference on big community issues. “United Way is about bringing people together to create a force for change that is greater than any of us individually or as a single institution can hope to achieve on its own,” explains Murtlow. “We do three unique things. First, we support 91 human service agencies that are aligned with our priorities that we hold to very high standards, or we have to separate from them. Second, we focus on organizations, programming and partnerships that create what we call The Path to Self Sufficiency. We connect the work of our agencies and others in working along the path to help those in need improve their situations over the long-term. Finally, we keep a bird’s eye view on this entire Path so we can identify big gaps and strategically invest in ways to close them.” Murtlow had a long career in the energy industry and did quite a bit of moving around. She never had the opportunity to get involved in her community. “When I moved here and took the job as CEO of Indianapolis Power and Light, I was able – for the first time – to get involved in my community and realized how much I enjoyed it,” says Murtlow. “In addition, I fell in love with this community. My family and I decided to make this our permanent home.” She and her family moved to Admirals Sound on Geist Reservoir in 2002 because of its beauty and their love of the water. Murtlow originally got the water bug sailing on Chesapeake Bay as a kid. “We have always longed to live near the water, and there is nothing more relaxing and beautiful than sunlight – or moonlight – reflecting off the lake,” says Murtlow. “This is a real neighborhood,” she continues. “One can always count on seeing lots of friendly neighbors while exercising or walking the dog. In addition, my membership at Geist Fitness has not only improved my health but also led to many lasting friendships with other residents. We often meet at local hot spots like Eddy’s, Sushi House or Mama Bear’s to catch up.”
UWCI builds the Path to Self-Sufficiency through a focus on four priority impact areas, which are all part of the “New U” long-term, high level community goals: 1. EDUCATION the best path out of poverty
- 80% of early childcare centers to be high quality by 2021. We started at 14% at high quality and are now at 26%. Many of the centers were not only below high quality, but didn’t even meet basic safety standards. To attain this goal, UWCI is: A. Using public information campaigns to drive demand through parent awareness B. Advocating for financial incentives for the childcare centers C. Providing capital grants to build out childcare facilities so they can get on the state’s Paths to Quality rating system. Because of this effort, both the state and citycounty governments have taken steps to expand access to quality Pre-K for all families. - 90% of Central Indiana kids to be reading at grade level by grade three. Currently, the average is 83% over all six counties, but high poverty areas tend to be much lower. - 90% on-time high school graduation rate. Although the current average for UWCI’s six counties is 89%, there are significant challenges in many of the higher poverty areas.
2. INCOME STABILITY for families who are one challenge away from financial ruin
Reduce the proportion of financially unstable families in Central Indiana from 32% to 25%. Financially unstable families are defined as those that spend more than 30% of their income on housing and utilities. They typically won’t have enough disposable income to save for an expensive incident that could put their families at risk. The cornerstone of UWCI’s income strategy is implemented through the Center for Working Families model in neighborhoods. The model focuses on providing immediate income support for participating families, employment counseling and financial literacy skills (managing a budget, cleaning up credit, etc.).
3. HEALTH so kids can learn and adults can earn a sustainable income
Indiana is ranked the 47th state in healthy Americans. Central Indiana has the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd counties in the state as well as the 25th, 40th and 78th. In high poverty areas, 50% of the kids are obese. UWCI would like to reduce the childhood obesity rate in alignment with the goals of Jump IN for Healthy Kids, a partner of United Way.
4. BASIC NEEDS so people can focus on improving their situations longer term Continue the relationship with 211 Connect-to-Help, which is the 911 for human services. When people dial 211, they are connected to the human services agencies and programs that can help them. The top three needs are housing, hunger and energy assistance. UWCI and its partners administer the Marion County Energy Assistance program that helps people pay their winter utility bills so they will be able to stay in their homes.

“WE TRY TO ENGAGE COMPANIES AND THEIR PEOPLE WITH THEIR TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE. WE WANT TO INVOLVE THE COMMUNITY.”
Many of those neighbors, in turn, donate to United Way, lead companies that run campaigns or volunteer as ReadUp tutors. Murtlow believes she brings both a corporate and individual donor’s perspective to understanding how corporations think about their community engagement, allowing UWCI to connect quickly and meaningfully with them. “We try to engage companies and their people with their time, talent and treasure,” said Murtlow. “We want to involve the community.” Anyone who has a passion for people and helping in one of the United Way’s focus areas can do so by being part of the UWCI team. “You don’t have to be a part of a workforce campaign to get involved,” says Murtlow. “You can give online. You can volunteer online.” Murtlow possesses two traits that she feels make her successful: discipline and passion. She is passionate about UWCI and has the discipline to make the difficult decisions to “lean into change.” She is bringing a long-term strategy to this successful non-profit organization, which is vital in the always changing technological world in which we live. Murtlow has had the pleasure of working with another Geist neighbor and Indiana Pacer George Hill. He has been working closely with UWCI on the Hubbard Life-Changing Teacher Award. The Pacers organization has really bought into United Way
with team members and staff generously donating and holding charity events. Paul George and Roy Hibbert are members of the Tocqueville Society, United Way’s group of most generous donors. Murtlow met her husband of 28 years – Jim – at her first job. Like her, he is an engineer. They have two kids, who, after Park Tutor, attended IU. Their daughter, 24, is living in Chicago, and their son, 20, just returned home from studying abroad in Australia. If that isn’t enough to impress you, Murtlow currently serves on the boards of Indy Chamber, The Mind Trust and Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee. She is also a director of First Internet Bank, Great Plains Energy and Wabash National Corporation and an emeritus director of Central Indiana Corporate Partnership. But perhaps most extraordinary is that she is a backup singer in a local band called Nucklehead, which often plays at George‘s Neighborhood Grill. She also knits, cooks Greek food and treasures time with her family and friends. Visit the United Way website for more information at uwci.org – you know, if you can’t get a hold of your neighbor, Ann. Marcy Vigren is the stay-at-home mother of 4 kids, 2 dogs and 2 turtles. THE FUTURE OF GEIST
DREDGING TO BEGIN THIS SUMMER ON THE HEELS OF A NEW WATER STUDY Writer / Tom Britt
A long-awaited study on the current status of Geist Reservoir was released by the City of Fishers, painting an optimistic outlook for the 71-year-old lake. Consulting firm Cardno JFNew completed a $100,000 study commissioned by the Geist Impoundment Fund last February. Fishers’ Mayor Scott Fadness says the study was an important first step to deciding the future of the area’s greatest resource. “There was a lot of misinformation going around,” said Fadness. “We decided to start with an assessment of where we are from a third party, objective position.”
The report entitled “Geist Reservoir Restoration Long-Term Capital and Maintenance Plan” is 187 pages long and details the findings of a year-long study that looked at the entire 140,194 acre watershed which stretches as far northeast as Anderson. Readings taken last summer were compared to previous readings dating back to 1991. In the end, the report finds that phosphorous, which is present in the sediment under the lake water and continues to pour in from the upstream watershed, is the biggest limiting nutrient and largest driver of water quality.
PUBLIC ENEMY NO. 1: PHOSPHORUS
Geist Reservoir Restoration Long-Term Capital and Maintenance Plan Town of Fishers Project Number: 140104200
However, the biggest surprise in the report is just how to eliminate the phosphorous, and in turn control unwanted vegetation like blue green algae and Eurasian Milfoil. Studies show that over 82 percent of the phosphorous pouring into Geist Reservoir each year comes from cropland in the watershed. To mitigate the biggest culprit of incoming phosphorous farmers in the watershed would have to adopt no-till and stream run-off best practices. Cardno JFNew’s summary stated, “The implementation of various best management practices throughout the watershed would reduce phosphorus, but would
produce little or no improvement to the water quality of Geist Reservoir.” “According to the report, even if you could get half of the farmers to adopt these changes, the difference in clarity in the water is only a few inches deep,” added Fadness. “You could literally spend millions of dollars and still not make a dent in the problem.” Brian Hall, president of the Geist Lake Coalition – which has been leading the nonprofit’s initiative to treat Geist Reservoir with chemicals to combat invasive aquatic plants – was also surprised by the report. “We were surprised at how little we can actually move the clock back in time,” Hall said. “We believed there could be more of an immediate impact by reversing the rise in nutrient loads by best practices among others; however, scientists are telling us otherwise.” The issue at hand is the phosphorous already covering the bottom of Geist Reservoir after years of sediment loading from the watershed. Chemical treatments can knock the unwanted weeds down each year, but the problem will continue year after year until the sediment is removed.
GEIST’S OVERALL HEALTH
One piece of good news for Geist residents, the overall health of Geist Reservoir, “appears to be static with little further decline expected to water quality.” This was welcome news to all of the major
12 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / FEBRUARY 2015 / atGeist.com
stakeholders in the Geist Reservoir discussion, especially the City of Fishers. Fadness was relieved to hear that the odds of Geist becoming toxic are relatively small, but he also adds “the recreational issues will not go away on their own.”
Willman stated that Citizens has been in discussions with the Geist Lake Coalition, City of Fishers and state regulators to finetune a maintenance dredging plan. The study reinforced what Citizens has known for years.
Long-term prognosis – according to the report – is to continue chemical applications and start dredging on the north end of the reservoir. This area east of the Olio Road bridge near 113th and Olio Road has been a concern for recreational users as well as Citizens Energy, the utility company that owns the water and has the biggest stake in the lake’s capacity.
“We’re not sure what type of dredging we will do just yet, whether it will be mechanical or hydraulic, but either way we plan to start this year,” added Willman.
According to Jeff Willman, executive director of water operations at Citizens Energy Group, dredging the north end of Geist should start this summer.
“Much of that area has been lost to silt and sediment over the years, we’d like to dredge that area to stop the continued loss of capacity,” said Willman in an exclusive interview with the Geist Community Newsletter.
Pete Peterson, president of the Fishers City Council and representative from the Geist Southeast District, sees the conservancy district differently.
“If the conservancy district was supported by the residents, we could then maintain As for the depth that Citizens plans to Geist Reservoir at the highest levels we can,” achieve or where the sediment will be moved said Peterson. “This isn’t a Robin Hood tax to, Willman was unsure at this juncture. where we take from one party and someone else enjoys the benefits. This tax money would be spent right where it comes from.”
WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?
CITIZENS TO BEGIN DREDGING THIS SUMMER
“I do not like the idea of putting additional property taxes on residents to pay for this; I’d rather try to get enough money from user fees,” said Fadness.
Since the January 2014 Geist Community Newsletter story entitled “Saving Geist Reservoir,” the notion of setting up a Geist Conservancy District has been a topic of conversation amongst stakeholders around the lake. A special taxing district, similar to the one set up at Lake Lemon in southern Indiana, would assess usage fees, dock fees and/or property tax assessments to homeowners living in the defined district. All the fees collected are then used to maintain the reservoir and pay for dredging, erosion control, security and chemical treatments.
Leading the charge and acting on the lake clean-up has been the Geist Lake Coalition. Through a series of door-todoor solicitations and arm bending, the group has been able to raise thousands of dollars from homeowners and businesses to treat the lake for algae and Eurasian Milfoil. According to Hall, they have a huge obstacle each year. “Funding remains our biggest challenge as there is no one agency, governmental entity or utility that bears responsibility for the reservoir,” Hall said.

THE FUTURE OF GEIST
Ultimately, the cost falls on the stakeholders and homeowners’ shoulders. We must identify a sustainable revenue stream that is fair and equitable for everyone. A conservancy district allows us to gather user fees such as dock and boat stickers in addition to property assessments.”
NEW WATER THINK TANK
Sen. Jim Merritt, R-Indianapolis, authored Senate Bill 410, which would create a new think tank, or water institute, to oversee the state’s water supply. AquaLaurus, as Merritt calls the group in his white paper, would have no legislative power, but would be able to make recommendations, conduct studies and help educate people on the growing issues
around Indiana’s water supply. This does not mean that Indiana is concerned about shortage in its water supply, but rather that Indiana has no central entity to oversee the water. “If there was a problem on Geist Reservoir or Fall Creek, we could go to a lot of places to have a study done,” said Merritt. “My legislation creating a statewide water institute—AquaLaurus—is a critical approach that’s long overdue in Indiana to focus on the State’s overall water policy. It will provide some concentrated pool of expertise to emphasize long term strategies for water management and water policy statewide.” Merritt went on to explain that AquaLaurus
would complement conservancy districts with water management tools. “AquaLaurus is not a replacement for the need for conservancy districts at the local or regional level. Conservancy districts provide critical focus on the local level, and they empower residents to be able to maintain and strengthen water resources focusing on the health, use and the recreation of the water provided. The citizens around the Geist Reservoir should strongly consider creating a conservancy district that would have the authority to enable the people closest to the issues to resolve them.” Senate Bill 410 has been referred to the Environmental Affairs committee, where they can hear testimony from those supporting or opposing the bill.

towards the formation of a conservancy district. Dredging by Citizens Energy is merely addressing one small area of the lake while the rest of Geist Reservoir, especially those areas with shallow coves and docks, are in dire need of ongoing maintenance dredging as well. The only sustainable model for ongoing lake maintenance is the establishment of a conservancy district.

At question will be the boundaries of the district. Which neighborhoods, cul-de-sacs and private drives will be in the district and which ones will be excluded. According to Matt Troyer, attorney for Bingham Greenebaum Doll LLP, spreading the costs across more homes lowers everyone’s financial responsibility. “Some think only the lakefront homes should be in the district, others say only those with docks, and others seem to think that entire neighborhoods should be included. It’s going to be a fair debate to discuss the scope and breadth of the conservancy district.”

DAVID BECKER, CHAIRMAN AND CEO OF FIRST INTERNET BANK Writer / Kara Reibel
College Mentors for Kids Sixth Annual Inspire Awards Lifetime Achievement Award winner opens up about his business experience and who have been his mentors. “They can’t eat you.” This valuable piece of advice from David Becker’s grandfather is possibly one of the most unforgettable phrases of truth in business. Shared when Becker started his first company, “Remember, whatever happens, they can’t eat you. You as a person will always survive, and you can start over.” These words of wisdom set the stage of an already independent thinker, solidifying the fearlessness to step forward. Growing up in Speedway, Becker had the unique experience of living near the track when crews rented out the surrounding garages of homes during the month of May. “As kids, we were allowed to stay out until the drinking was well under way and the language turned south,” recalls Becker.

Confirming this feeling, Becker met CEO Jack Welch during a company seminar in Chicago. Welch concluded his speech by asking if there were any questions. In a sea of suits, only one arm raised, Becker’s. No one ever questioned Jack. As Becker’s boss, seated next to him, was covertly yet frantically trying to get him to lower his arm, Welch called on him. After answering Becker’s proposed question, Welch called him up to the stage. “No one ever raises their hand to ask a question. I commend you for being brave enough to ask. And it was a GOOD question,” said Welch to Becker off to the side of the stage.
After seventh grade, Becker’s family moved to Monrovia, where Becker graduated from high school. “I thought we had moved to Green Acres,” shares Becker. It was here in Monrovia where Becker developed an appreciation of land and space, influencing his current home built on 150 acres. Becker opted not to accept a highly-coveted spot with the United States Coast Guard Academy and instead attended DePauw University. He listened to his gut again four years later, deciding not to go to law school, just three weeks before graduation. “It may have been impulsive, but I just knew where I was supposed to go, or more so where I was not intended to go,” said Becker. His first job was with General Electric Credit Corporation. “This experience was TOWNEPOST NETWORK / FEBRUARY 2015 / TownePost.com
This event confirmed what Becker already knew. He was not meant to be a sheep. He was a shepherd. Having absorbed as much as he could at GE, he sought his next experience. It was through the challenge of finding an adequate computer system for credit unions in Indiana that Becker found himself launching out on his own. After working with the Indiana Credit Union Trade Association during the deregulation phase of the early ‘80s, Becker wrote a business plan on how to solve their problem. The solution was simple and outlined in his business proposal. Upon presenting the business plan to the credit union, it was clear that the union had no idea what to do with a business plan. Evident that this was going nowhere, Becker promptly quit his job and formed a company on his own. He would solve the computer problem and the credit unions would become his clients.
Becker found a guy in Michigan to sell him what he needed at wholesale. Without first solidifying capital, Becker immediately got into his car and drove straight up to Michigan to forge the deal, arriving at 9 p.m. The meeting wrapped up at 1 a.m, and with his brain in overdrive with what he was taking on, he drove home. “I think the most influential mentors in my life were my parents and my grandfather,” said Becker. “My grandfather [with a seventh grade education] was one of the most successful businessmen I have ever met in all kinds of different industries, and my parents instilled me in from a very early age that my only limitation in life was me and my belief in myself. They gave me a lot of independence as a child and taught me the responsibilities that went along with that independence. I have always felt that if I put my mind to something and worked hard enough, I could accomplish almost anything.” This conviction held true, for several tech companies later, First Internet Bank was started. It’s ironic that he runs a tech-based, banking business. During his DePauw days, Becker would pay a frat brother to punch in his codes for a computer class. “I hated computers, I swore I would never do anything with computers,” said Becker. Not only that, he used to make fun of bankers. “They love widgets and something tangible,” said Beckers. “First Internet Bank is intellectual property. Acquiring capital was next to impossible without a brick and mortar location.” Becker’s oldest son, Jason, said, “Dad, the last thing I ever thought you’d be is a banker.” “My style of management is a massive change for the conservative banking industry,” said Becker. “The mantra at First Internet Bank is, ‘The only constant is change.’” The traditional banking model focuses on maintaining status quo. “A local bank did a year-end shareholder press release talking about the great success they had growing
their assets close to 5 percent over the past year. We grow more than that on a quarterly basis,” states Becker, “We are changing the way consumers handle their financial needs, practically on a daily basis.” Becker has kept his NASDAQ-traded First Internet Bank headquartered here, in Indiana, recently occupying a long-vacant Fishers building near I-69 and 116th Street. When asked in New York City why he would have his headquarters in Indiana, Becker’s response was, “Why not?! I can be anywhere in a couple of hours, the Midwest work ethic is good, it’s a great place to live, and the cost of living is hard to beat.” Throughout Becker’s career, he has always given back. Whether this involves his countless charitable work, assisting the entrepreneurial sector or commissioning artwork, Becker gives his time and efforts to bettering the community. “I like bouncing both ideas and problems off others to get different perspectives,” he said. “I think I get more out of the conversations than they do.” Becker’s positive influence in the community cannot be understated. When former Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith started the High Tech Task Force, Becker was immediately on board as a member. It was on this task force that Becker first met Kyle Salyers, the TownePost.com / FEBRUARY 2015 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK
senior vice president of Health Catalyst, a healthcare data and analytics company. “David is tremendously busy, yet he always makes himself available. Always,” said Salyers. “He listens, asks questions and leads you down an intentional, thoughtprovoking path. Becker exhibits great humility. He somehow makes you feel like he is the one learning and growing from the relationship. This builds great confidence and gratitude in the people around him. But ultimately, he simply takes a genuine interest in people, and for that I am grateful.” According to College Mentors for Kids, “The Inspire Awards are an opportunity to connect with other business and community leaders who value mentoring in the workplace and community.” People like Becker and a few others on that High Tech Task Force had the foresight to attract high tech companies to Indianapolis. Since that time, it is easy to track the influence and impact those individuals have made for the area. “David Becker takes the time to grow the people around him,” said Salyers. “In turn, you feel an obligation to do the same and pass along support and knowledge to others without ever asking for anything is exchange.
This is how entrepreneurial communities grow, and our community has benefited greatly from David’s example in this regard.” At the 1999 launch of First Internet Bank, which received huge international media coverage, a reporter from the BBC asked, “What do traditional banks have that you don’t have?” Becker replied, “Long lines in the lobby.” “I think I have always been an out-of-the-box thinker because I never knew there was a box,” says Becker. Each year, College Mentors for Kids hosts the Inspire Awards to recognize and celebrate workplace and community mentoring. It’s at this luncheon where David Becker will receive his award for his 30+ years inspiring and motivating others in our business community to achieve greater things. ACCELERATE INTO NURSING WITH MARIAN UNIVERSITY INNOVATIVE PROGRAM HELPS STUDENTS LEVERAGE EXISTING BACHELOR DEGREES
Writer / Kara Reibel
Marian University’s Online Accelerated Nursing Program has created an alternative path into nursing for college-educated students seeking more rewarding options. This 16-month program allows students to leverage a four-year degree into a bachelor’s in nursing with top quality training through a partnership with St. Vincent Health. For one local family, this “second degree” option helped extend a family legacy of nursing and faith-inspired healthcare. Rachael Brown, a recent graduate of the Online Accelerated BSN Program, was attracted to Marian University for a number of reasons. “The Franciscan values of Marian University and those of St. Vincent Hospital are complementary, and I was drawn to their thoughtfulness in caring for a patient’s body, mind, and spirit. These are the values that I grew up with, and applying these on a daily basis in a work environment where I am truly helping people is what I knew I wanted to do.”
Mother-daughter duo (left to right) Rachael and Loraine Brown both graduated from the Marian University School of Nursing. TOWNEPOST NETWORK / FEBRUARY 2015 / TownePost.com
Rachael attended Southern Illinois University (SIU) on a volleyball scholarship for her undergraduate degree. “At 18 years old, I had no idea what I wanted to major in. I just knew that I wanted to play volleyball,” says Rachael. But motivated by a desire to help others, Rachael had a role model in nursing close by.
Rachael’s mother, Loraine Brown, began her own career as a nurse at St. Vincent 29 years ago. Having also attended Marian University (then Marian College), she was drawn to St. Vincent for the same reasons as her daughter and now serves as Executive Director of Mission Integration for St. Vincent Hospital. “Being a nurse is so special. To serve the patient and their family is so rewarding. I don’t think of this as a job,” shares Loraine. “During a visit to Evansville, I witnessed the Sisters [The Daughters of the Poor] and nurses caring for patients, and I could see myself doing that,” shares Rachael. While having lunch with her mom in the St. Vincent Hospital cafeteria during her junior year of college, Rachael saw a Marian University table. “I picked up a brochure on the online accelerated program and started asking questions,” adds Rachael.
The Marian University Online Accelerated BSN Program is an intense, yet flexible, 16-month commitment. Lectures are online, with hands-on classroom exercises and clinical training at St. Vincent Hospital. “I graduated from SIU in May and started with Marian in August,” says Rachael. “The real-world clinicals at St. Vincent were great. The nurses and staff were very welcoming. It is a teaching hospital, and we were able to work closely with the wonderful nurses there. We gained confidence every day,” shares Rachael. Students of the accelerated nursing program come from a wide array of backgrounds, ages, and experience, but they share the desire to pursue meaningful work in a highly sought-after field. “In my class, there were students like me who just graduated from a four-year college,
a lawyer who practiced for 15 years, an Army Ranger, former teachers, an engineer and a marketing executive. All were making a career change,” shares Rachael. Marian University’s Online Accelerated BSN program exposes their students to a multitude of options for careers in nursing without having to start over in a traditional program. With Marian University’s close relationship with St. Vincent, students are trained with state-of-the-art technology alongside some of the best healthcare practitioners in the country. Nursing remains among the nation’s fastest-growing careers; through Marian’s innovative approach, students earn a second degree for a second chance at success. “THE GRATITUDE IS INDESCRIBABLE. NURSES WORK SO HARD, AND THEN YOU GET THANKED BY A PATIENT AND IT MAKES IT ALL WORTH IT.” - RACHAEL BROWN

Pete Peterson Goes from Chief Antagonist to Fishers City Council President Writer / Tom Britt . Photographer / Brian Brosmer
At the first city council meeting for the city of Fishers, Geist representative from the southeast district Pete Peterson was voted by his fellow council members to be the first city council president for the upcoming year. “I WAS SURPRISED. HE WASN’T THE ‘THREE-HEADED SNAKE’ EVERYONE HAD BEEN TALKING ABOUT DURING THE ANNEXATION.” - SCOTT FADNESS, MAYOR OF FISHERS -
26 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / FEBRUARY 2015 / atGeist.com
His journey started as the “Chief Antagonist” for the then Town of Fishers during the forced annexation fight that started in 2005. As president of the Geist United Opposition (GUO), Peterson was rallying Geist residents to form the Towns of Geist in an effort to avoid the annexation. In the end, a judge determined that Fishers initiated their annexation before the Towns of Geist were filed and the 2,000 plus unincorporated residents became Fishers residents on January 1, 2010. “The governor [Mitch Daniels] passed a 1 percent property tax cap which pretty much made the property tax increase we were fighting a nonissue,” said Peterson. Once Geist was part of the Town of Fishers, voting districts were drawn up in 2010, and Peterson was the likely candidate to fill the area’s first seat on the town council. Geist and Fishers residents alike were still bitter over the annexation which made for a close race in the 2011 election. Fishers’ districts were voted on at large, meaning that Peterson needed a good showing in the Geist area to counter the anti-GUO, anti-Peterson sentiment in the rest of the town. He beat out two other candidates for the seat by only 12 votes and was sworn in on Jan. 3, 2012. “Nobody knew what to expect,” recalls Peterson. “Here I was fighting these guys for the last five years, and now I’m sitting next to them at a town council meeting.” A meeting prior to his first council meeting with then town manager Scott Fadness changed that dynamic and set the stage for what has now become some of the most productive changes in recent history. “Scott reached out to me and asked me to go to lunch. To this day, we have a tremendous relationship.” Fadness, now the city’s first mayor, recalls meeting Peterson for the first time. “I was surprised. He wasn’t the ‘three-headed snake’ everyone had been talking about during the annexation,” laughed Fadness. Geist residents were skeptical as well. Peterson summarizes the sentiment of Geist residents as “distrusting,” a feeling that over time has diminished considerably since his first days on the town council.
Signs around the 2,000+ homes on the north end of Geist Reservoir reminded residents for five years of the ongoing annexation battle.
Annexation opponents formed the Geist United Opposition which staged rallies like this one in front of Bella Vita Lakeside. The Hamilton County Republican Club was hosting a Christmas party at the restaurant, and “No Forced Annexation” signs littered the entry to garner support for annexation reform.
Since that time, Peterson and the rest of the Fishers Town Council have worked with Fadness to create a robust economic development plan which has already taken shape in the downtown Nickel Plate district, Fishers amphitheater and Launch Fishers to name a few.
Proven expertise for uncertain markets.
“Of all the things we’ve done, Launch Fishers is probably the biggest feather in our community cap. I really want to push more smart economic development and responsible development to the east of Geist Reservoir towards the county line.” Business development is important to a vibrant city, according to Peterson. While property taxes on homes is capped at 1 percent, rentals are taxed at 2 percent and businesses pay 3 percent. “As a rule of thumb, a financially healthy city has a 30 percent business tax base which helps keep taxes low on the residents.” Short-term, Peterson admits that the transition from a town to a city presents the council with their own growing pains. “We’ve never been a city before, so it’s going to be a learning experience. The council is mainly responsible for approving permits, budgets and the like. All that economic development and visionary stuff goes up to the mayor [Fadness].”

Grayson says, “It wasn’t easy, but I worked hard at it and I saw a lot of change in my schoolwork and my life. I even got better at my sports. They have given me teaching tools to use at home for future reference through their brain-training program. Both Grayson and Chandler are currently using the skills they learned in training to work through junior and senior high school.” “LearningRx takes the frustration out of school work. It is a sacrifice of both time and money; however, the time and money are far less than most people spend on their kids’ sporting activities. My boys are able to soak up what they are being taught, and work through homework now that would have felt impossible before. Being an active community participant is nothing new to Scoty’s Brewhouse. So it makes sense that the local restaurant chain chose to involve the community when it decided to update its 96th Street location. Scoty’s Brewhouse is currently running a social crowdfunding campaign with the hopes of raising $750,000 from Hoosier donors. Tis investment will allow Scoty’s to remodel its Northside restaurant, pay back a current debt at a lower rate and involve the community in the company’s growth.
to provide loans for “brick and mortar” remodels. What is a successful business to do when it is too big for SBA loans and too small for private equity? In Scoty’s case, they decided to turn to the very people who made the restaurant chain successful to begin with: Its loyal customers.
Scot Wise – the president and CEO of a Pots & Pans Production, which is the parent management company for Scoty’s Brewhouse and Tr3e Wise Men Brewing Company – saw Localstake as an opportunity to explore non-traditional ways of funding his business.
Partnering with Indianapolis-based crowdfunding platform Localstake, Scoty’s is asking individual investors to fund this remodel and other working capital expenditures. In return for their dollars, Localstake investors do not just receive an incentive or a product; they also receive a fnancial return on their investment. Scoty’s is ofering a revenue share opportunity. Te company will pay investors 5 percent of monthly revenues over a period of fve years until they have been paid 1.5 times their original investment.
“It’s not a traditional ‘going to a bank’ world anymore,” said Wise. “Afer coming out of the last recession, I had to think of new ways to grow. We used personal investors for previous store growth. For instance, in Fort Wayne, six doctors got behind bringing a Scoty’s restaurant there. Tey own a percentage of that restaurant. Now there’s a group in Evansville looking to do the same thing. In this new world, Localstake makes a lot of sense.”
Since Scoty’s Brewhouse on 96th Street was opened in 2006, the company feels that it’s now time for a “major remodel.” Te renovated space is slated to contain a pizza oven and a whole new look for customers, which includes doors that open up the patio. Te remodel is also expected to increase Te idea for the campaign came via one of efciencies to improve the speed of service. Scoty’s vendors, Moody’s Butcher Shop. Securing funding via the Localstake platform is similar to other crowdfunding marketplaces like Kickstarter or Indiegogo. However, Localstake focuses solely on raising funds and investing in private businesses. Te investments are regulated, and they are ofen locally-focused. Te restaurant experience coupled with these positive social connections have created a dedicated customer base for Scoty’s. “Te reason that I like how Localstake does this is that investors are not just geting 1.5 times their money back,” said Wise. “Localstake incentivizes people to give more. Persons who are interested in learning more about the details of this investment opportunity can visit Localstake.com, create an account, select Scoty’s Brewhouse and then express an interest by entering an investment amount. Investment opportunities for qualifed investors begin at $500, and monies are held in escrow until the minimum funding amount of $250,000 is met. At that time, funds are transferred to Scoty’s, and the term of the investment agreement begins. Te campaign is currently scheduled to run through the end of February, with investment incentives decreasing on Jan. 31 and Feb. 28. Tere are currently a number of other area businesses also seeking funding via the Localstake platform. According to Kevin Hitchen, one of the company’s founders, an estimated 50 percent of the companies using the service are established and 50 percent are start-ups.

“Te challenges of the current economy make banks less willing to loan money to small and medium size businesses,” said Hitchen. “Simultaneously, there’s also a growing interest in supporting all things local, whether it’s food or business. Localstake helps bring together people who are interested in investing in their community with local businesses who need funding. THINK PINK! Think Pink! Not as in Valentine’s Day, but rather let’s think pink as in Race for the Cure! The 24th Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is April 18. What better way to pink out than
to train and take part in this great cause? Yes, it’s the month of chocolate, romance, and Champagne, but we need to think ahead. So grab your pink workout gear and join us in
Our very own Tom Britt, publisher of the TownePost Network, is teaming up with Toni Folzenlogel to co-captain this team. Folzenlogel (sounds like “frozen bagel”) has been involved with this event for years. She’s excited to join forces with Tom to raise what we hope will be a great amount of money! An enthusiastic Toni told us, “Tom makes everything fun, and I’m sure this will be no exception!” Here’s the rub… while they may have fantastic resumes in the publication and design biz, they are no runners! They do know how to have a good time though! Their training will NOT take place in a gym: Their idea is a little more fun. They want to have “training sessions” leading up to the race at local watering holes. What? Raising money for a good cause AND meeting in local bars: This sounds like our kind of race!
Townies for Tatas team captains Toni Folzenlogel and Tom Britt (center) rallied supporters at Casler’s Kitchen & Bar for a kick-off training session.

Donning our workout gear (for no real reason as it turned out), we joined the kickoff party with our corporate team, Townies for Tatas. At this first of many “training sessions,” we raised our glasses pledging our commitment to the success of the inaugural Townies for Tatas Race for the Cure. Our goal? Raise over $10,000 and have a good time doing it! Joining in on this fun is easy. “Like” the Townies for Tatas Facebook page to get notifications on all upcoming training sessions. Go ahead - press that “Like” button. Visit TowniesForTatas.com to join our team or donate! Not a runner? No worries, neither are we! We don’t just need runners, we need donations! Any support in the fight against breast cancer is most welcome. Whether you choose to donate anonymously or in someone’s honor or memory, all online contributions are a simple click away. There’s even an option to donate $24 in

Wanna join our team? Yay! Help us reach our goal to be the biggest team possible to run the 2015 race! It’s only $30 to participate and includes a Race shirt and bib number. Survivors can join for $25 and receive a pink hat, a pink survivor shirt, and a pink bib number for the race. Can’t make it for Race Day? Join us in spirit! For $35 you can Sleep in for the Cure! You’ll receive a Race shirt and Sn00ze bib, which will be mailed to you after the Race!
Put your pink on, and let’s join forces and put the fun in fundraising this year! Make sure to join us at the training sessions! We’ll be posting pics and updates of this team’s training “progress” over the next few months. Bring a friend or come by yourself. You’ll have fun either way. As always… CHEERS to the Townies for Tatas FUNdraiser!
Remember, it’s your entry fee that gets us to the starting line, and it’s your fundraising effort that will help us find a cure. We need you to take the challenge to raise funds and see the impact you can make. You can easily give an additional gift or invite a few of your friends to donate or join this team! JILL HALL WINS NATIONAL AWARD
Writer / Allie Nash
Jill Hall, owner of Repro Graphix, was grateful in December with the 2014 Woman Business Owner of the Year Award from the National Association of Women Business Owners. Hall has been a business owner for 30 years and was honored by the award. “I was extremely honored,” said Hall. “As a tenured NAWBO member, I have had the pleasure of getting to know so many remarkable women business owners over the years, and to be chosen for this award is extremely humbling!” The award had more than just a personal meaning to Hall. “Winning this award confirms that after 30 years in business, we are still working hard and moving our business ahead in the right direction! I am blessed to have an amazingly smart business partner who’s also my husband that encourages me to focus on my strengths and fills the gaps of my weaknesses. We are a great team, and we have a very knowledgeable, tenured staff that supports our vision, mission and values. The award truly goes to our entire team!” But Hall will not stop here. She looks at the company’s past as she considers the future goals for Repro Graphix. “In December 1985 Repro Graphix started as a small blueprint shop, printing drawings and specification manuals for the construction industry,” she said. “we have increasingly grown into a complete graphic design and print company for small and large format print needs. Our future goals are to further grow our business by continuing to diversify our offerings in order to meet our customer needs.” Something that makes Repro Graphix and Hall stand out is the dedication shown to the community. She believes that is one of the keys to success and her advice to young women hoping to own their own business. “My best advice would be to hire wisely and surround yourself with talented and dedicated team members, as well as be thankful for each opportunity and give back to your community and customer base. Repro Graphix is very proud of our community involvement where we serve on many boards, support over 50 nonprofits and 20 industry organizations.”

GEIST HALF TO ADD 10K COURSE TO 2015 RACE
Geist Half Executive Aprill Shelburne
Writer / Allie Nash
The Geist Half Marathon will bring new experiences to runners and the community this year, while still providing the same local feel that it always has. New to the race this year is a common start and finish line, which is just south of Casler’s Kitchen and Bar on 113th Street and Olio. According to Geist Half Executive Director Aprill Shelburne, runners will be able to finish just across the Olio bridge this year. Also new for the 2015 race is the option to run a 10K. “The 10K is designed for runners that want to challenge themselves and get away from 5K’s, but maybe they aren’t quite ready for the half marathon,” said Shelburne. Runners that have already signed up for the 5K may change to the 10K online at GeistHalf.com.
and Geist areas. We have people registered from eight other states.” As the numbers of registrations keeps growing, the title of biggest 5K in Indiana gets closer. “We are on the cusp of being the largest 5K in Indiana. We need just 500 more entries to take over the Mini-Marathon’s 5K as the biggest one in Indiana,” said Shelburne. “That would be an awesome title to bring to the Fishers and Geist area.” To register for the May 16 race, go online to GeistHalf.com. Fees vary according to race and a price increase occurs after Feb. 28.
If runners want the VIP treatment, they should sign up now. “If you sign up to be in the Month of May Club or VIP, then you get to enjoy free adult beverages and food from Casler’s, but this will sell out so people should make sure to sign-up early.” This year will also bring fun for kids, while still providing adults with an atmosphere they can enjoy. “There will be a kid’s play zone area that will feature things like inflatable obstacle courses and face painting. This will allow for a kids and family area to enjoy the day. Adults will still find the beer garden for an adult atmosphere.” And Shelburne is happy with the results of the new changes. “From this time last year, we are up in registrations by 45 percent,” said Shelburne. “And we have runners from more than the Fishers 48 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / FEBRUARY 2015 / atGeist.com

HISTORY PRESERVED AT GEIST The Fall Creek Township has started it restoration project of the cemeteries around Geist and Fishers. The cemeteries that will be restored include Fort, Helms, Kinnaman, and Mt. Zion. McKay was finished in early January, while Arnett was being worked on at the time of publication. The Fall Creek Township Board approved the $193,350 project in 2014. The most expensive cemetery to restore will be Fort cemetery, taking up 25 percent of the budget. Helms will be the least expensive and only use 10 percent of the budget. Stonehugger Restoration Company, Inc. (SRCI) has been contracted for the project, which will take two years to complete. This includes a break in the project over the summer of 2015. According the Indiana codes for townships, each township is in charge of abandoned cemeteries. But this project will help preserve
and maintain the headstones, some of which are more than 150 years old. “I feel it’s very important to care for our cemeteries and preserve our history,” said Fall Creek Township Trustee Jeff Hern. “In the past few years, my office has worked diligently to repair and install fencing to help secure these cemeteries. I’m happy to see this project get underway and restore as much of these stones as close to their original state as possible. I would like to think the families would appreciate the respect being shown to their loved ones who have passed. We have not forgotten them.” SRCI is cleaning, polishing and putting new bases on the headstones. This process includes taking each stone out of the ground and putting a custom base on the headstone before it goes back in the ground. According to Hern, no stone will removed no matter what condition it is in.
