In 2007 Judy Kendall had just sent her youngest child off to college and began contemplating what the next chapter of her life would look like. Working full time at IU Health, Judy was an organizer and self-described detail-oriented person, not someone to go anywhere without a plan. But now an empty nester, she remembered her lifelong dream to travel to Africa. Eventually, she and a friend, who happened to be a native of South Africa, set off on a month-long African Safari. This was always intended to be the trip of a lifetime, but what she experienced on her trip changed her and South Africa forever.

Seated among close friends, delicious food, and a local band playing our favorite classics, I realized FoxGardin Kitchen and Ale had quickly grown into exactly what the founders envisioned. As I enjoyed the atmosphere and indulged in my favorite FoxGardin sandwich, I also realized there were many familiar faces seated throughout the quaint Main Street restaurant, familiar faces from Geist and Fishers. Less than a year after launching, FoxGardin Kitchen and Ale was much more than a “local favorite,” it was a regionally acclaimed restaurant.

From the upstairs lounge to the inviting outdoor dining area, FoxGardin Kitchen and Ale has expanded and innovated its way to becoming a staple of Fortville’s Main Street. Indiana has made it clear – it wants more of what FoxGardin is serving.

Fortville’s newest restaurateurs are eager to meet this demand, as they will be launching a new restaurant at Geist, “FoxGardin Family.”

FoxGardin Family will open in 2017 at 104th Street and Olio Road.

I spoke with founding members of the FoxGardin Kitchen and Ale management team, Chef/Owner Jacob Burgess and Managing Partner Toby Shelton, to get the scoop on this exciting news: What factors led you to open this new location?

“Ultimately, the demand and location really spoke to us. We are fortunate to be in a position where getting a reservation at

FoxGardin can be difficult, so the new location can certainly help with the demand. Additionally, many of our guests live very close to the new location and have families to feed. We felt this location and opportunity could accommodate that.”

Will this location feature the same menu as FoxGardin in Fortville?

“You should expect to see a menu with a very similar influence.

Certainly, keeping a scratch kitchen and local vendors will be a focus on the new menu.”

What type of environment are you planning to cultivate within this new location?

“We want to make sure the service remains at a high level. The environment should provide a little bit of everything from private dining, family dining and bar / lounge seating.”

Why do you think FoxGardin has experienced so much success in such short time?

“I think that there was a demand for a dining experience that provided great quality in a laid-back environment. We can provide a similar experience that one may get downtown Indianapolis, but with a much shorter drive.”

People were walking hours just to get clean water that was typically full of parasites and created sickness beyond anything you have ever known. If they did go to the emergency room in a hospital, they oftentimes did not have the facilities to accommodate those needing the treatment, so they often would lie down on the lawn of the hospital to wait.

It was on the 30-hour trip back to the United States when Kendall knew she had to raise money to help those children. She had no idea where to start, but she knew she could not return home and allow those kids to suffer or die.

The details for her effort began to materialize. When she met a clerk at the Disney store she was connected to Dr. Sula Mazimba, a Zambian cardiologist at the Kettering Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio. During a meeting with Mazimba, she expressed her desire to help an orphanage in Zimbabwe. As a native of Zambia, he agreed to share with her then names of orphanages that needed assistance. But on the drive back to Indianapolis, she decided not to wait, but to join his medical mission team. She then travelled alone to meet

with Mazimba’s medical mission team. Once their medical work was done, Mazimba took her to a dozen orphanages, one of which built by Mother Teresa. She eventually decided on an orphanage because of an eightyear-old boy named Ben that captured her heart. She returned home and formed Anchor of Hope Charities as a non-profit organization dedicated to sponsor and implement educational programs for underprivileged kids in Africa. She chose to focus on Zambia because it was the poorest nation and most in need of services.

With a population of more than 13 million people there were about one million that were orphaned and undereducated.

Kendall has the heart and the passion, and she’s learned through trial and error what is needed. If the students were hungry they would not be able to focus in school, so she secured daily lunches for the students. Many of the students often had to walk up to three hours to get water or to go to school — often without shoes — so she partnered with Toms to provide new shoes twice a year.

The program started out helping just 24 students, but now provides new shoes for 45,000 children twice a year. She partnered with the Carmel Rotary to provide money to build wells for clean water. She provides pants for the boys and dresses for the girls and now is in contact with an organization helping to create literacy programs in their native language in Zambia. She has developed the relationships to implement the programs that she has in Africa. She said she does these things because she wants to help the children.

While the job is huge, Kendall has found the work rewarding. She has long since retired from her job at IU Health, and her former employer has provided donations, as well. She has even used her own personal income to ship supplies when in a pinch. But the infrastructure is in place and next year she will go from feeding lunch to 1,500 children every day to feeding lunch to 10,000 every day.

But there is much work to do. She rents a four-wheel drive vehicle to get to the rural areas at a cost of $110 per day. She is looking for a partnership with a local car dealership that can provide her a vehicle, which will saver her money in the long run.

In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.

There are many needs to keep a program like this going and Kendall is working tirelessly to make a difference to the children of South Africa. She has laid the groundwork and the infrastructure is in place to impact the way support is given and the way the needs are being met through Anchors of Hope Charities. Kendall’s efforts will impact lives for generations to come.

Karen Mangia, Vice President of Customer and Market Insights for SalesForce, recently discovered an old email exchange with a friend stating how “email was ridiculous and it would never catch on.”

This is laughable now, but back then, the most radical idea was a handheld cell phone for talking, not texting.

Since her college days, Mangia knew she wanted to work with customer data and took a nontraditional path to a tech career.

Karen enjoyed the constant change with AT&T, but Cisco was growing and she saw opportunity.

Through a series of building blocks and choices at Cisco, Karen’s job ultimately transformed into what she had desired since college. She was the Nielsen ratings for Cisco.

“I managed the annual survey process to customers,” says Karen, who performs a very similar job at SalesForce. “I assessed what was working and what wasn’t, where is the risk and sought market opportunities.

“I have been fascinated by why people make the choices they make, what are the trends, study the data points and weave together the story,” says Karen, who earned her undergrad and masters degrees at Ball State. “I wanted to work for Nielsen, until I discovered they were located in Iowa.”

“Like with anyone’s career path, every step is additive to the process as a whole.

The steps lead someone somewhere. The technical data of customer feedback helps us figure out what to build next, what our customers want.”

Building her wheelhouse, Karen dug into project management and sales with AT&T before being recruited to Cisco.

Disruption is a concept Mangia has welcomed into her life time and again. Not all of the disruptions have been welcome, but all provided learning experiences.

From a personal perspective, one pivotal moment in Karen’s life was backing out of a wedding after the invitations had been sealed and stamped.

The longest car ride of Karen’s life was sitting in silence with her mother after her bridal shower on the way back to Karen’s home. Her mom pulled into a parking space and Karen started crying and told her mom not to unload the gifts. They would need to be returned.

“The voice inside my head was screaming, DO NOT MARRY THIS GUY,” shares Karen. “By listening to the inner voice inside my head, I disrupted my entire life course and took a detour, which was my intended path all along.”

The next major disruption occurred while Karen was working at Cisco. She was noticing signs something was not quite right. In her early 30s and experiencing success on many levels, she was displaying signs of fatigue. She justified her lowerthan-normal energy level as a result of

recently moved to a new house. Yet more symptoms were appearing.

She told herself stories to explain the unwelcome signs her body was exhibiting. Karen’s health was in decline and she was doing her best to deny it.

She became unrecognizable to herself in the mirror. Her hair was falling out, she had gained weight, her skin was yellow, and her once-vibrant blue eyes had turned grey. But she kept pushing herself as if nothing was wrong. She also started to forget where she placed things.

“It was not until I couldn't remember my brother's name that I thought, ‘Oh my gosh. I can't ignore this any more,’” she shares.

It was three and a half years before she was diagnosed with pesticide poisoning. Even in the midst of her health crisis, she did not slow down until she was forced to. She had to heal.

Karen had to pay attention to what her inner voice — and her body — was telling her.

“The first step is discovering what pushed the snowball down the mountain,” states Dr. Kevin Logan, Mangia’s physician. “Then a personalized prescription for diet and lifestyle changes are essential to the process of bringing the body back into balance.”

It takes many lines of code to have a program perform as designed, and it takes time for your actions to propagate.

The same applies to your health, especially when a body is in crisis.

In her book Success With Less, Karen details her journey back to health.

It’s not the physical healing that is dominant in the book, but more the emotional element that was her trigger.

This healing opportunity impacted Karen’s approach to life. She was forced to audit her circumstances and figure out for herself what her idea of success looks like and how it needed to change.

“It's so easy to look at everyone else's life and find that success is easy for other people. ‘If I only had the right education, the right boss, the right job.’ But success is available to everyone,” she says. “The key piece is determining what success means to you and calibrating to that. Because when it is that definition, it is available to everyone. There is no key to a secret club.

A more circuitous and unpredictable path could not have been had by Sun King President Bob Whitt with regards to his career, nor a more enjoyable one.

Bob’s previous work experience included Senator Lugar’s presidential campaign in 1995 and1996, where he worked with his wife, Ellen, a lawyer who spent 25 years in politics and public service at the state and federal level. She is now Executive Director for The Exchange at Marian University. During the campaign, Bob planned many rallies, fundraisers and additional events in the key primary states of Iowa and New Hampshire.

“The job I am in and the job I just left are both dream jobs,” says Bob. “I am fortunate enough to experience two in one lifespan.”

Prior to Sun King, Bob served 11 years as the Executive Director of White River State Park, having been appointed by thenGovernor Mitch Daniels and reappointed

by Mike Pence. The 250-acre downtown Indianapolis park includes the Indianapolis Zoo, White River Gardens, Eiteljorg Museum, Indiana State Museum, IMAX Theater, NCAA National Headquarters, The Lawn music venue, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians), Military Park and many other green spaces.

“I was essentially the landlord, and was well prepared without knowing it in advance, as I understand event and property management,” shares Bob, who had worked for years as a commercial real estate

He started his career in business with some of the best sales and management training available at Xerox Corporation. He earned his MBA at University of Maryland while working for Xerox in Washington, D.C. The combination of his later commercial real estate development and brokerage experience, his personal obsession with food, wine, craft beer and the “locally grown and made” movement, his significant event experience and community/political involvement made him the ideal candidate for what the Sun King team needed, regardless of his lack of actual craft brewery experience.

As part of the company’s initial push to help the community and create brand awareness, Sun King began popping up at local events in 2009. Bob noticed they seemed to be appearing all over the place. Sun King was located in downtown Indianapolis, so Bob dropped by and introduced himself.

Walking into Sun King Brewery today looks dramatically different than it did at that time. The growth of Sun King has been exponential. The company exceeded its fiveyear production and sales goals within its first 18 months in business, creating a push for the state to raise the limit for allowable craft brewery production.

“Originally, there were only a few tanks in that section,” says Bob, waving his hand towards the corner of the building. “I would occasionally come in, hang out, drink a beer, and get to know founders and brewers Clay Robinson and Dave Colt, plus partners Andy Fagg, Steve Koers, and Clay’s father, Omar.”

As the relationship grew, Bob discovered they shared similar business philosophies regarding how a business should run responsibly, commitment to the community, and respect and treatment of employees.

“Our downtown Indy brewery is somewhat automated, but in Fishers one measures everything. It’s very hands on,” says Bob. “I’ve also been out with the draft technicians cleaning the draft lines in restaurants, a key to quality with kegged beer, which often resides a significant distance from the taps.”

“A lot of people were curious why Sun King chose to bring on a new president with no experience in the world of brewing. But as a company that is transitioning from scrappy start-up into a mature business there is a whole different set of skills that are necessary for success,” Clay says. “Bob’s background and connections throughout the community, combined with his passion for all things local and his desire to help make Indiana a great place to live, work, and play, made him a great fit for Sun King.”

Since inception, the commitment to a quality product is evident in the thoughtful consideration of each product Sun King produces. For example, it took Dave and Clay two years of research and a significant financial investment to make Sunlight Cream Ale and Wee Mac Scottish Ale shelf stable at room temperature for grocery stores. For care in distribution, most beers would just be thrilled to have third-party sales and distribution. While Sun King does have distribution throughout the state of Indiana, they self-distribute within Marion County and regularly clean the lines from

keg to tap, ensuring the highest quality beer reaches their customers.

Sun King maintains a strong presence at numerous events. In 2016 they participated onsite or donated to more than 700 events.

To date, Sun King has more than 350 community partner organizations and a full team focused exclusively upon community development.

Sun King’s goal is to become Indiana’s beer, with plans to extend outreach through festivals and events in the bordering cities of Louisville, Cincinnati and Chicago. The intention is not to sell beer out of state, but to create the demand for those residents in Kentucky, Ohio, and Illinois to cross the state line to buy Sun King.

Bob refers to Dave and Clay as the visionary driving forces behind the company, its innovative concoctions, and the expansion into spirits.

The distillery will be built from the ground up in the Midtown District of Carmel with a prime location on the Monon Trail between Main Street and the Palladium.

Construction is set to begin during the first quarter of 2017 with hopes of opening before the end of the year.

"I worked closely with Bob as Sun King developed its plans for building something unique along our Monon Trail,” says Carmel Mayor Jim Brainard. “I am consistently impressed with his vision and ideals for how he sees Sun King growing in the future. We're pleased he chose Carmel for this new direction and we are happy to be sharing in his success."

“You really can live as close to local as possible if you know where to look,” says Mel McMahon Stone, which is why she, along with her husband, Lance, created Indiana Originals, a network of Indianaowned and founded businesses looking to serve Indiana residents.

They hope to make it easy for Hoosiers to ensure their dollars benefit the local economy by providing a one-stop source for local products and service providers, rooted in their own communities.

Mel’s passion for all things local comes from her strong Indiana roots. Born and raised in Irvington, Mel attended college at Indiana University in Bloomington and has never had the desire to leave the state she loves.

“I love taking the road less traveled, literally,” Mel says. “I enjoy

getting off the interstate, taking the back roads and seeing the small towns, businesses, and people that make Indiana such a great place to live, work, and raise a family.”

With more than 13 years in the Indianapolis radio and television scene, she has a strong history of supporting local businesses. Mel has worked both on air and as an account executive dedicated to helping local businesses.

Lance’s love of all things local runs deep, as well. He grew up on a farm in Warren County and has always worked with locally owned businesses. It wasn’t the large chains from whom he and his family shopped, but rather it was from their neighbors and those rooted in the local community. That way of doing business stuck with him, and now he’s more passionate than ever about drawing attention to the locally owned businesses in our own community.

HEALING POWER: GEIST FITNESS STRIVES TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN PHYSICAL FITNESS TRAINING AND HEALTH CARE Writer / Jon Shoulders

Ask a member of the training staff at Geist Fitness and they’ll tell you physical exercise can be much more than a technique to blow off stress or enhance energy levels – it can actually serve as a form of medicine.

Each trainer at Geist Fitness, a locally owned, private club on Fall Creek Road, holds an Exercise is Medicine (EIM) certification – a worldwide health initiative launched in 2007 by the American Medical Association and the American College of Sports Medicine to integrate physical activity more closely with the U.S. healthcare system. General manager and full-time trainer Ben Mitchell, a Brownsburg native who has been with Geist Fitness for nearly five years, says local physicians and therapists refer chronic disease and post-rehabilitation patients to his facility, where he and fellow EIMcertified trainer Jake McKinley create fitness programs tailored to individual clients.

“The rehab or hospital phase is a temporary fix, and people need to remember that after they’re done with that phase it’s still an ongoing process to keep their bodies healing and functioning, and that’s where we come in to fill that void,” Mitchell says.

Clients may find themselves sweating away on cable machines, stability and medicine balls, free weights and step platforms under the close guidance of their trainer at Geist Fitness, which Mitchell says is currently the only facility in the state where all trainers are EIM Level II certified.

“The Level II certification means we can work with post-rehab clients and those with orthopedic or chronic disease issues after they’ve been cleared by their doctor and move out of that rehab setting,” Mitchell explains. “We’re trying to make connections with a lot of hospitals in the area, which is something we’ll be hitting hard through 2017 to establish client referrals.”

Mitchell says Geist Fitness members don’t have to deal with the sorts of distractions common to many fitness establishments, such as the constant clanging of weights from throngs of exercisers or long waits for equipment use. The facility, founded by owner and

New Jersey native Joe Damush in 2000 after he relocated from California, has recently transitioned away from offering general memberships and group classes, and all of its clients are personal trainees.

“We’re a small, boutique-style gym – we’re not the big-box, intimidating type of place, and I think that’s what people like about our setting,” Mitchell says. “It’s always fairly quiet in here, with Jake and I as the full-time trainers and Joe doing some training as well.

People can’t just come in the door to join and work out on their own. We do that because we want room to work with our clients who like the privacy and that personal connection.”

In the spirit of advancing the healing power of exercise, McKinley says the workout routines customized for clients at Geist Fitness, centered on pragmatic, functional body strength, can improve day-to-day living for post-rehab individuals and make daily tasks easier for those of advanced years.

“Functional exercises are typically full-body movements that use

multiple joints and planes of movement while emphasizing stability of the core musculature,” says McKinley, who has been with Geist Fitness for nearly two years. “It’s all about teaching all the muscles to work together rather than isolating them to work independently.”

McKinley says such training can improve balance and coordination, making daily tasks as simple as getting in and out of a vehicle easier for aging adults. One of McKinley’s clients is local Geist publisher Tom Britt.

“For me, it’s not about trying to get huge and kick sand in people’s faces, it’s about quality of life,” said Britt. “I turned 50 this year so staying flexible, active, and keeping as trim as possible is more important to me now. My training sessions with Jake are just part of my weekly schedule.”

Mitchell’s credentials also include certification with the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI), an educational organization specializing in fitness and physical rehabilitation geared specifically toward something near and dear to the hearts of many seniors and retirees – the golf swing. Steve Bullerdick, a Fishers resident and avid golfer who began TPI training with Mitchell in February of 2016, says the program has helped him shed a few unwanted pounds, increase his agility and enhance his golfing prowess in the process.

“I was an ironworker for 28 years and I’ve always had some strength, but when I retired in June of 2015 I could tell I wasn’t as nimble as I wanted,” Bullerdick says. “With the TPI you’re working out and using weights, but it’s incorporated in swing motions. I ended up developing muscle and losing several pounds within the first few months of training with Ben. It’s a lot of focusing on the hips, core, upper arms and shoulders.”

Mitchell feels the TPI training program, while related specifically to the improvement of his clients’ golf abilities, ties in to the general mission of the Geist Fitness staff – to provide the local community with a means of enhancing their physical well-being.

“Basically, people are looking for improved quality of life, and that’s the majority of our clients,” Mitchell adds. “They want to be able to get through a day and play with their kids without pain.

It’s like the old saying that you can’t enjoy your wealth if you don’t have your health. It’s important to be able to physically do what you want to do and enjoy your life in that way.”

After a lengthy application and audition process, which included a full physical and psychological evaluation among many other requirements, Joyner was chosen as one of six cast members for Discovery Channel’s new extreme survival challenge series, “The Wheel.”

The show, according to The Discovery Channel, is the ultimate survival test. Six participants are challenged to survive in six grueling landscapes across South Shon, who was a Marine for six years and America. Once Joyner received the news he’d been selected, he had only two weeks back in Fishers to prepare himself, and then was flown back to Los Angeles briefly before beginning the challenge, where he was flown to an undisclosed location, at which time all six participants met for the first time. They were then split up, and each dropped in their first environment.

The hardest part of the experience, he said, was the isolation. Because there was no camera crew, he was taught how to film his

He says it’s hard to put into words what the isolation feels like, including depending only upon yourself for your own survival. He credits his time in the Marines for helping to prepare him, but the isolation made it a vastly different experience.

One unexpected result of the experience was a change to his senses, and how he experiences his environment.

Joyner said, “Combat with the enemy versus combat with yourself in complete isolation are two totally different battles. In combat, you have other Marines to go through the experience with. With this you’re completely on your own. The isolation is horrible.

“Every day felt like 5 days,” he continued. “Your entire concept of time changes. You only see the 30 minutes of edited footage. You don’t see the other 23.5 hours of the struggle that I go through. But it happened and I lived it.”

Joyner says that the experience challenged him in ways he never thought possible, even with his service in the Marines. The most surprising thing to him was how emotionally broken he became as days stretched on and his sense of isolation grew.

Even during transports from one hellish location to the next, the production crew could offer no comfort, assistance, or even interact with him on any level not critical to moving him to the next location.

Joyner was unable to share the final result of his experience, but he said that upon returning home he had a hard time re-acclimating to his “normal” environment. In fact, he said he isolated himself for a week before leaving his home and reengaging with the outside world. He said he had a hard time remembering how to use his phone, and the first time he got in his car he sat there for 10 minutes because he had a hard

“I felt like my body transformed, became animal like in some way, because it had to,” he said. “My survival depended on it.”

When asked by the producers of the show if he would consider doing it again, he said he absolutely would.

“It’s a rare, life-changing opportunity.”

KEEPING A RIVALRY ALIVE: GAUGUIN V. SEURAT Writer / Kara Kavensky

The Indianapolis Museum of Art, founded in 1883, is one of the oldest art museums in the United States. That same year, 35year old Paul Gauguin left his successful position as a Parisian stockbroker to dedicate his life to art (to the distress of his wife, with whom he had five children). Three years later, Gauguin would paint a pivotal and influential work, Still Life with Profile of Laval.

Still Life with Profile of Laval, which is currently on display in the European Galleiesr, is the cornerstone of the Pont-Aven Collection acquired by the IMA from international art collector Samuel Josefowitz in 1998. This famous painting is going on tour later this year, first to The Art Institute of Chicago, and then on to the world famous Musee d’Orsay in Paris.

The acquisition of works by Gauguin and his followers, included in the Pont-Aven Collection, elevated the prestige of the IMA in international art circles. Of the 17 paintings in the collection,

three are by Gauguin. The Pont-Aven Collection also includes 84 prints by Gauguin and his cronies.

“In addition to the Pont-Aven Collection, we have the best collection of Neo-Impressionist paintings in the world outside of the Musee d’Orsay and the Kroller-Muller Museum in Europe,” says Ellen Lee, Wood-Pulliam Senior Curator and a friend of Josefowitz.

The IMA already possessed one masterpiece by the founder of the movement, Georges Seurat, The Channel of Gravelines, and Petit Fort Philippe, through a generous donation in 1945 from Mrs. James W. Fesler, in memory of her parents. Indianapolis businessman W. J. Holliday gave the IMA’s core collection of works by Seurat’s followers to the IMA in 1979. Other strategic additions were made more recently through the family and friends of Robert S. Ashby.

collection gallery continues a rivalry, which now stretches across an ocean.

The history of the contentious relationship between Gauguin and Seurat is something of legend. Gauguin is 11 years older than Seurat and yet their artistic journeys are parallel. Each began drawing and painting in 1873.

The eighth (and final) Exhibition of Impressionists opened May 15, 1886, in Paris. The lead up was filled with controversy as Monet, Renoir, Sisley and Caillebotte withdrew from participation due to the acceptance of newcomer Georges Seurat.

Camille Pissarro had pushed for Seurat’s inclusion. Just before the opening, Degas insisted the word “impressionists” be removed from the announcements. Gauguin displayed a huge collection, whereas Seurat showed only a few works, including La Grande Jatte, (owned by The Art Institute of Chicago). La Grande Jatte and the other paintings of Seurat garnered the most attention from the Exhibition. Gauguin’s keen disappointment that Seurat had garnered most of the Exhibition’s acclaim was heightened by the realization that his former mentor, Pissarro, was now a follower of the young Seurat.

Arguably much of the best and most

representative work of Gauguin will be in close quarters with Seurat in Chicago this June since La Grande Jatte, the talk of the eighth Exhibition, is in the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.

At the IMA, the Gauguin paintings in the Pont-Aven Collection include: Flageolet Player on the Cliff, Christmas Night and Still Life with Profile of Laval. Flageolet Player on the Cliff, was painted by Gauguin the summer before Seurat created The Channel of Gravelines, both currently on display in the IMA’s European Galleries.

Pont-Aven is located in the Brittany region of France. It is here that Paul Gauguin attracted a group of artists, creating the PontAven post-impressionist movement. Georges Seurat moved in a different direction, to various ports in northern France, when he wanted a break from the Paris studio.

Still Life with Portrait of Laval almost didn’t make the flight to Indianapolis when the collection was acquired in 1998, as it was flagged during the legal due diligence because a prior owner bore the name Herzog.

The wealthy Herzog family, led by patriarch Baron Mor Lipot Herzog, amassed the largest collection of art in Budapest, Hungary in the early 20th century. The baron died in 1934, leaving his estate divided amongst his three children. Still Life with Portrait of Laval was given to his middle son, Andras Herzog.

Andras married and divorced Maria Izabella Farravicini, with whom he had two daughters. Andras later died in a forced labor camp in 1943.

Allied postwar protocol required works of art to be returned to their countries of origin. There is existing litigation today by other Herzog heirs, regarding other works of art still in Hungary. After the war Still Life with Portrait of Laval was

safeguarded and inventoried in Germany by Indiana native Thomas Carr Howe, Jr., one of the original Monuments Men. It was then shown to have been legally released

by Hungary to a Countess Istvan Bethlen in 1948.

This countess was Andras’ ex-wife, who had remarried.

The painting bears the stamped seal of the Hungarian government on the back of the canvas, which enabled its legal departure from Hungary. The Countess promptly sold the Gauguin masterpiece, and it was eventually purchased

by Josefowitz.

“It was my dream, made possible by the IMA’s expansion in 2006, to juxtapose our Seurat collection with our Gauguin material, creating a permanent space in the European Galleries for these two major movements of the late 1800s,” adds Lee. Gauguin’s Still Life with Portrait of Laval is small in stature, yet rich in meaning. Art historians may continue their discourse in perpetuity over the symbolism of each element of this painting.

“The Pont-Aven period for Gauguin is when he became a mature artist,” shares Lee. “He painted incredible works while in Tahiti, but it was Pont-Aven, years earlier, where he had his breakthrough.”

Still Life with Portrait of Laval abounds in personal symbolism of the artist. The ceramic vessel in the center of the table was created by Gauguin. In an 1887 letter to his wife, Gauguin drew a sketch of the sculpture and wrote: “Did you also bring a pot I made; keep it carefully for me. I like it, unless you are able to sell it (for a good price, 100 francs).”

There is no evidence today that the piece still exists, as its whereabouts are unknown.

The still life and white tablecloth are an homage to Cezanne, whom Gauguin admired greatly.

Charles Laval is a Gauguin groupie and friend. They met in Pont-Aven the summer of 1886. The cropped image of Laval in the painting is indicative of the style of Degas, who was a mentor to Gauguin. The choppy nature of the addition of Laval’s profile is a modern approach to a portrait, referencing Degas’ style.

A highly speculative element of the painting is the middle section. Scholars think it to be a window or a mirror, or possibly something entirely different. Through scientific examination, the mystery of this upper center region of the painting may be close to be being solved.

“Under infrared light, the middle area appears to be that of a mirror, as the imaging shows a clear reflection of Laval’s profile,” states Senior Conservator of Paintings Linda Witkowski.

Old Oakland Golf Club has seen its share of changes. After a fire burned much of the clubhouse, the golf club rebuilt the structure, highlighting the beautiful views and modernizing its bar and restaurant services. Now with a new owner, Old Oakland has set its sights on an even bigger project: renovating each of its 9-hole courses.

“It’s my passion,” says O’Neal, who started his golf course management company in 2011. “I’m kind of lucky. I’ve been doing for a long time what I love to do. It’s fun each and every day.”

“Steve is substantially committed to renovating the golf course and to the City of Lawrence,” O’Neal says.

Indeed, the renovations have raised the golf club to another level. The improvements began in the fall when the east nine was closed. The first thing to be updated was the

50-year-old irrigation system.

“It had a lot of failure,” O’Neal says. “The new system will keep the golf course looking beautiful.”

Along with the irrigation system update was the cart path, which didn’t exist before the renovation. A local company planned, dug, and paved the 8.5-foot-wide cart path. Now, even after heavy rains, golfers can enjoy the east course.

“It just made it a much better luxury for the members to play the east nine when conditions may have called for otherwise in the past,” O’Neal says.

The biggest part of the renovation, though, was the bunkers; 30 sand traps on the east nine. A golf course architect helped redesign the sand traps to make them more strategic. Some were moved, some reconfigured, and some removed altogether.

“It’s really kind of a whole new look,” O’Neal says, noting these “Billy Bunkers” have more depth and character. Members will definitely notice the difference.

Along with the east nine, the practice tee has also been improved. A new irrigation system, new artificial tee matt, and new targets have made the practice tee much more presentable.

“It really has a great eye appeal now,” O’Neal says.

In the coming seasons, the other nine courses will experience similar renovations.

“It’s really important that at a private club like Old Oakland, the service and experience are great each and every day,” O’Neal says.

GEIST RESIDENT TERENCE FAHERTY’S NEW MYSTERY COLLECTION FEATURES INDIANAPOLIS LOCATIONS

Mystery Author Terence Faherty’s latest book, “Tales of the Star Republic,” is a collection of short mysteries featuring a newspaper reporter who investigates strange and unexplained stories with paranormal elements. Mystery and fiction aficionados, as well as fans of “The X-Files” and the old “Kolchak: The Night Stalker” television series will enjoy the book. The stories take place in Indianapolis and several other Indiana cities and towns.

“I wanted the Star Republic character to be so focused on his story, he never quotes himself or brings himself directly into the story,” Faherty said. “He is able to keep an even tone in his stories without taking sides.

It allows him to keep an open mind.”

Paranormal elements include ghosts, levitating stones, channeling, and phone calls from the dead. Many of the poignant and entertaining stories feature strong characters with human frailties and regrets.

There is a strong mystery to each tale, but also a warm and humane touch as well.

Faherty, a longtime Geist-area resident, said the character of his Star Republic reporter

Six of the “Tales of the Star Republic” stories were first published in other publications. One of the stories, “The Quarry,” first appeared in Indiannual 1984, a Writer’s Center of Indianapolis publication.

Four others were published in the famous Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. Another story, “God’s Instrument,” first appeared in the short story collection “Unholy Orders.”

The other six stories are originals written for the collection. Another Star Republic book is already in the works.

“Each one of the tales has a different

supernatural element that is different from the other stories, but they all feature characters with a unique story to tell the reporter,” Faherty stated.

Faherty, who has won several mystery writing awards, began his mystery-writing career attending Writer’s Center of Indianapolis writing workshops and publishing short stories in its annuals. The Writer’s Center is currently located in Broad Ripple.

Faherty published his first novel, “Deadstick,” in 1991. It is the debut in a series of Owen Keane mysteries and was nominated for an Edgar Mystery Writing award for best first novel. The Edgar Mystery Writing award is named after Edgar Allan Poe and is presented every year by The Mystery Writers of America.

sleuth. The Philadelphia Inquirer called Keane “one of the freshest, most appealing figures in crime fiction.”

Keane’s pursuit of unsolved mysteries has taken him through eight novels and several short stories. In a prequel novel called “The Lost Keats,” the character investigates the disappearance of a fellow seminarian in southern Indiana.

Early in the story, Keane’s investigation briefly takes him to the Castleton area.

“The Ordained” is a sequel and is one of Faherty’s best novels. In it, Keane returns to Indiana, where he investigates the disappearance of Southern Indiana residents. The Indiana Statehouse is featured in an early chapter.

Another highly entertaining Keane novel, “Prove the Nameless” features a character named Geist. Faherty explained that Geist means “spiritual,” and the character claims to be a spiritual leader. The story revolves

around a 20-year-old multiple homicide of all but one member of a prominent New Jersey family. The mystery has clever twists and has Keane working for a newspaper in Atlantic City.

Faherty is originally from New Jersey but has lived in the Geist area with his wife, Jan, for the past 30 years. He says Geist has been a great place to live, as well as to write short stories.

“I like the way MacDonald had the past reaching forward to grab a character,” he said.

Faherty’s other mystery series focuses on Scott Elliott, an actor turned operative for a Hollywood Security Agency. One of the books in the Elliott series, “Come Back Dead,” won a Shamus award — given by the Private Eye Writers of America — for the Best Detective Fiction, Genre Novels, and Short Stories.

Faherty will be the guest of honor at Ball State University’s Magna Cum Murder Crime Writing Festival in October 2017 at The Columbia Club in downtown Indianapolis.

Faherty is currently at work on a new Elliott novel titled “Play a Cold Hand,” which involves a con against a movie

Faherty, a lifelong mystery reader, is a big fan of the late mystery author Ross MacDonald.

The path that Geist resident Ashanti Ordone followed to fulfill her family legacy and personal passion for education is not the traditional one that you might expect. Ashanti grew up on the northwest side of Indianapolis and graduated from Indiana University Law School, after which she practiced family and real estate law. Throughout her time practicing law, her passion for education and teaching remained strong, and she often served as a substitute teacher or taught night-school courses.

Teaching is strong in Ordone’s family history. Her mother, Marcia Butler, was in education for 40 years serving as a kindergarten teacher, an elementary school principal, and was director of the Gifted & Talented program for Indiana Public Schools when she

retired. Her father had served as a high school teacher who then became an attorney. She has seven aunts and uncles who all served in education throughout their careers. Education was truly in her blood, and she felt it was her purpose and calling to pursue as well.

In 2002, Ashanti was feeling compelled to make a career transition to focus more on education. Around that time, her mother was getting ready to retire. They had a conversation with Ashanti expressing her interest in opening a day care center, and her mother revealed, to Ashanti’s surprise, that it had been a lifelong dream of hers to do exactly that. With their newfound common passion, the two began making plans to turn their daycare dream into reality to serve and educate the children in their community.

Their programming focus for the daycare was to recognize and develop the gifts and talents of all children. Whether the child’s

gifts were in art, music, interpersonal relationships, sports, or any other number of other, those gifts would be developed alongside a strong academic foundation. The goal is to help each child identify and begin to develop his or her unique talent and gifts before even entering elementary school.

The first daycare opened in August 2002 in a home near 46th Street and Shadeland Avenue. It had been renovated for the sole purpose of housing the school. With her mom’s strong connections in education, she reached out to her friends and encouraged them to start bringing their grandchildren to the school. Enrollment grew quickly, and soon was full. They realized quickly that to really have the impact they wanted to have in the community, a larger space would be necessary, and soon.

In December, 2002, they bought a building on Shadeland Avenue that was licensed to accommodate 100 children. In 2005, an additional classroom was opened at that location to allow for further growth as demand for the targeted curriculum focused on pre-writing, pre-math, and pre-reading, in addition to the talent-development component. In May, 2013, a second daycare location was purchased on Ruth Drive, near 74th Street and Keystone Avenue. That location is licensed for 140 children.

Throughout the growth of the Gifted & Talented Academy,

Ashanti’s husband Terrence had been encouraging her every step of the way. He is her biggest supporter and always challenges her to think big and maximize the positive impact she is having. In 2015, Terrence transitioned toward helping with the business. He learned it firsthand as he helped open the upcoming third location of the Gifted & Talented Academy. Running the daycares has become a true family affair.

Ordone had an experience with one of her families recently that confirmed to her the value of what they were striving to provide to the program’s children. A child that had attended Pre-K and kindergarten at Gifted & Talented Academy had recently started attending another traditional school program after the family moved out of the area. The mother of this child called Ashanti and said that the teacher had contacted her and wanted to know where the child had attended kindergarten because she had never seen a first-grader come in to her classroom so well prepared.

As an educator and daycare provider focused on helping kids prepare and develop their skills, there is no greater endorsement than that.

The school’s slogan reflects the core beliefs of Ashanti, her mother, and everyone who plays a role in the daycares and in serving and educating their children: “All children Can Be Gifted and Talented.”
