RATING CELEB

10 YEARS!

It was the usual hot and dry July 4th holiday in 2003. Tory, my youngest daughter and I were stuffing flyers in the mailboxes of my neighbors in Crossing South announcing the launch of a website project that I had been working on for about a year called atGeist.com. Two weeks later, I got a letter and fine from the United States Postal Service for “postage due” on the flyers. Needless to say, the road to the success we’ve had over the last 10 years hasn’t always been easy. As we celebrate the 10 year anniversary of atGeist.com, it’s a good time to reflect on some of the milestones along the way that were instrumental to our growth. If you have lived in the Geist area for more than 10 years, hopefully these will jog your memory, too. atGeist Professional Services Directory In-Home Personal Training

SEPTEMBER 2005 Calendar of Events John and Tina Gianfagna Their story begins at the Pratt Institute of Design in New York when then 16-year-old sweethearts fell in love and were married after graduation four years later. They began a design firm and settled in Marietta, Ohio where they raised four children; Gianni, Thomas, Diane, and Jeanette.

“We had some large brand clients like 3M and Timex that we worked with for years,” said John as he reminisced over his years with the Gianfagna Group he and Tina started in 1973. The Gianfagna Group was a family business with oldest son Gianni active in the business up until they sold the business in 2001.

In 1999, their daughter Jeanette was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. She lived in Windermere with her husband and two children. “John and I would drive over from Marietta every weekend to help out with the kids and visit with her while she was going through radiation, chemotherapy, and radical surgery,” recanted Tina. While the family business was thriving in Marietta, John and Tina felt the need to move to Windermere to be closer to Jeanette. “We loved Marietta and raised all our kids there,” said Tina. “We packed up the moving trucks and moved to Fishers

We profiled a couple from Windermere that was organizing a walk in the neighborhood to benefit a cancer charity that their late daughter has started called Creating Hope. Through that story and introduction to the Gianfagnas, the Vines for Life Wine Tasting Event evolved which now raises over $20,000 annually for area cancer charities.

We published a newsletter in Fishers and launched the second local portal, atFishers. com. Blame timing, an annexation, or just having the wrong business plan, but we ceased publication after only 12 months. However, lessons learned from the first attempt helped us to develop the licensing model we have today. It also marked our first full color newsletter.

NOVEMBER 2005 Geist Annexation

At a press conference the week of Thanksgiving, Town of Fishers officials announce the annexation of unincorporated areas around Geist Reservoir. Our Geist Community Newsletter became the voice of residents opposed to the annexation since over 90% of those affected signed a petition against the effort.

JANUARY 2007 Call Out for the Geist Half Marathon

We published a short blurb in the newsletter looking for locals to help organize a run around Geist Reservoir. What followed was an outpouring of support and help to launch the inaugural Geist Half Marathon & 5K the following year. To date, the event has raised over $250,000 for Geist area schools.

AUGUST 2008 TownePost Network Begins

SEPTEMBER 2008 Carmel Community Newsletter Launches

Originally launched as atGeist.net, the TownePost Network launches as a local networking website for local business owners. It was rebranded as TownePost.com when other publications are launched serving the greater Indianapolis area.

After the failed Fishers expansion, we decide to go into Carmel and launched atCarmel.com. With other local monthly magazines ending or going out of business, our new model was well-received. It was later licensed in 2012 to Ann and John Cinnamon.

JANUARY 2009 atGeist.com Makes National News

JULY 2009 Geist Fireworks Moves

JANUARY 2010 Full-Time Position

APRIL 2010 Team Luke

A local money manager tries to fake his death near Birmingham, Alabama by jumping out of an airplane. While he’s on the run from the law, he emails me from a campground which eventually leads to his capture two days later. The story makes national news and lands me a spot on such shows as Good Morning America, Larry King Live, 20/20, Dateline, and even the Today Show.

This was the first year the fireworks show was moved to the Geist Marina and the Fall Creek bridge was closed and used as a viewing area. Today, over 12,000 spectators come to the bridge and thousands more enjoy the Geist Lake Coalition’s 4th of July event from their boats or homes.

I end my last consulting contract with AuthorHouse in Bloomington, committing full-time to atGeist.com and atCarmel.com. Up until this time, I was traveling to speak at various writers conferences around the country each month and managing their online lead generation program.

We profiled a young boy named Luke Andritsch battling leukemia that had inspired his friends, neighbors, and classmates at Geist Elementary School to form Team Luke. They have participated in the Geist Half Marathon, Vines for Life Wine Tasting, and will be the benefiting charity at the upcoming Geist Triathlon on July 27.

JUNE 2012 Townies Super Local App Launches

NOVEMBER 2012 World Headquarters Moves

I meet Jody and Dann Veldkamp from Center Grove on the south side of Indianapolis to talk about our annexation fight and their incorporation efforts. One thing led to another and they launched the Center Grove Community Newsletter in April of 2012. We went on to launch atFishers.com (February 2013) and atZionsville.com (April 2013).

After a few years of doing video, we launch the video component of our media business by streaming the Geist Blast on the Bridge fireworks and CarmelFest parade live online. Both events have over 275 simultaneous live viewers with over 25,000 on demand views each after 30 days.

Our Townies app debuts on iTunes and Google Play with our news feeds and the ability to upload photos and status updates to TownePost.com. The new release, scheduled for this summer, will feature mobile coupons from locally owned retailers.

After nine years, we finally moved out of our house in Crossing South into an office above Eddy’s Neighborhood Bar & Grill. We hired our first full-time employee, Alyssa Sander, and have since expanded into two more cubicles to support our growing media business.

Courtyard | Kathi Moore “It will be absolutely fantastic – a new experience for the resident, much like a cruise ship every day,” enthused Neaizy Massoud, Food Services Manager for the beautiful, newlycompleted Allisonville Meadows Assisted Living Apartments at 104th and Allisonville Road. Food service is an important component when you’re looking for a place to retire or to recommend to aging parents. Massoud, chef-trained in Paris, France, has planned his meals to be a step up from what residents are accustomed to. For example, the dining room will be open all day with no rules outlining certain times meals are served. “I waived all that,” explained Massoud. “This is your home and, just like at home, you can walk to the dining room to eat whenever you want a snack or a meal. The location of Allisonville Meadows is convenient, close to I-465 and I-69 for easy family visits. The grounds are well-landscaped with both patio and courtyardaccess apartments available. There are 89 assisted living apartments and 21 Memory Care apartments, all equipped with small kitchens, emergency pull-cords, nightlights, and more. “From the time residents move in, we tailor our services around their needs,” said Ann Jee Kirstein, General Manager. “We have so many options of services and activities to choose from.”

There’s a community bus for outings, doctor appointments, and standard shopping trips. There are perks such as a pool table, activity and fitness room, a resident library with computers, a beauty shop for haircuts and shaves, a theater room with fresh popcorn, a coffee bar and a formal dining room to host meetings or visiting family. The Mad Bomber Strikes Again (and it's all good!)

| Neal G. Moore ach Fourth of July, thousands of area residents gather for the annual Blast on the Bridge at Geist fireworks celebration. Some watch the aerial display aboard boats or while sitting on the marina bridge, others from the decks of shoreline homes, still others from favorite viewing spots surrounding lake. But, I wonder how many celebrants give consideration to the “who” and the “how” behind this much-anticipated event?

Marty Miller and J,R, Brooks prepare electrical launch system for a recent fireworks display in Lebanon, Indiana. Right: Go to www.atGeist.com to see an interview with Marty Miller. Meet Marty Miller, Geist resident and owner of Mad Bomber Fireworks Productions. “I’m the kid who never grew up – that’s what my wife says,“ smiled Miller whose father launched Mad Bomber in 1982. “I started working there when I was 12 years old. You get to be a kid forever, and there’s nothing better than putting on a good show.” I caught up with Miller and employee J.R. Brooks in the midst of a three-hour set up of a 15-minute show for a church celebration in Lebanon, Indiana. Miller explained that the secret sauce of a great fireworks display is variety and timing. For the Lebanon show, a combination of low-level effects and larger aerial shells were used, alternating between the two for pacing and to limit “dead sky” time. Shells were launched to a height of 150 feet or so using two methods: by hand with a highway safety-style flare, and with a hand-held electronic controller hard wired to the launch boxes. “The controller unit allows us to shoot as many as 400 shells. You get a lot of them in the air with this system,” said Miller.

barges are in the water, aligned properly, and pushed into place, organizers must then ensure that pleasure boats (and the people on them) are set back at a safe distance. Wind direction determines if the barges are nearer the dam or the bridge. “Depending on how the wind goes is how we set it up. We want the debris to land where we want it to land,” Miller noted.

programs, joked that his coaching and administrative responsibilities are “more explosive,” and conceded Mad Bomber is definitely the fun job. After all, the last four digits of his cellphone number are 1776. “I get more satisfaction out of the Geist Lake show than I do anything else,” said Miller. “I’m pretty well connected in the community with the coaching and stuff that I do, and there are a lot of people who know I put on the fireworks. It kind of puts a bit of extra pressure on to make sure it gets done the correct way and it goes off the way I want it to go off.”

"I get more satisfaction out of the Geist Lake show than I do anything else.”

In contrast, the Geist Blast show requires four employees working about 50 hours to set up the 45-minute show. “Geist is one of our more unique shows. We have four barges we set up and chain together. Everything is shot from those barges,” explained Miller. Once the

Blast is an all-electronic launch requiring hours of wiring and testing. “It takes a long time because once you plug it in, you have to make sure you have continuity, and make sure the shooting cues are when you want them,” said Miller. The 3,500 or so shells are ignited with electronic charges – similar to how a model rocket is fired. The aforementioned transmitter in Miller’s skilled hands controls the entire show. Safety, of course, is of paramount importance. “Just like any other business, there are little things that can go wrong,” said Miller as he knocked on a nearby wooden platform. “We’ve been pretty successful, and a lot of it comes from experience and double and triple checking.” Miller, who also is responsible for Holy Spirit Catholic Church’s athletic

Miller anticipates his children will one day join the business, but not quite yet. “They’re itching to come out now, but I want to wait until they’re a little bit older. They certainly understand the danger of fireworks. There’s plenty of time to fill dad’s shoes.” This mark’s the tenth consecutive year Miller has orchestrated Blast on the Bridge. He once did a $250,000 show in Chicago. And, considering the hundreds of festivals, football homecomings, weddings, even indoor fireworks for the Indiana Pacers, his will be awfully big shoes to fill. Cocktail Cove

A Partier's Paradise Photos & Story | Stacey Place It is a summer weekend. Work dragged all week, and it is time for some fun in the sun. For the local party people, Cocktail Cove is calling. Although boating coves on Geist Reservoir have been around for as long as locals can remember, many are still unsure of the nature of the notorious Cocktail Cove. The “party” location has shifted over time, but the atmosphere thrives as the boaters stay dedicated to their weekends shared on Cocktail Cove. Each weekend, when the sun shines high in the sky, the boats begin their parade into the Cove. The tie-up can be large, often 20 boats, all strung together using rope, the result being one big party in which people can hop from boat to boat, socializing, drinking, and soaking up the rays. Boater Jay Gagne described a typical tie-up as “Broad Ripple on boats. Each boat has its own distinct personality,

16

geist c o m m u n i t y

Geist_July_2013.indd 16

like a street lined with various bars and clubs. The sound systems are cranking; many boats blare country, some rap, and others club music.” It seems as if the boats would be in competition with one another, but the variety in the tie-up works on Cocktail Cove, encouraging swim-clad party goers to mix up their social networks and meet new people. Not everyone on Geist Reservoir seems to appreciate the party atmosphere as much as the boaters. The Cove is lined with beautiful homes, and many homeowners are not thrilled about the party being held just beyond their back yard. DNR officer Bollman explained, “People have a right to look out their windows and not see nudity and drunkenness. Also, if the music is too loud, they are violating a town ordinance.” The DNR’s stance is that if boaters are obeying the city, county, and state laws, then there is no problem; but once those laws are broken, boaters will have to deal with the consequences in the

form of warnings, tickets, and possible arrests. From the boaters’ perspective, the Cove tie-up is a weekly summertime social event not to be missed. The crowd may often be loud and the bikinis small, but the entertainment value is priceless. Cocktail Cove is not necessarily a location on the Reservoir; it is a summertime way of life. Here, the drinks flow, the music blasts, new friends are made, and old friends are celebrated. Gagne summed up the attitude of the Cove dwellers, “Despite our jobs, our income, our social standing, or our political affiliation, we all have one commonality, and that is the love of water, music, and good people.” Stacey Place graduated with an Undergraduate Degree in English Education from Purdue University and earned her Masters from Ball State. She currently is a freelance writer as well as a Learning Consultant for numerous Indiana universities.

Fit & Figured Out Story & Photos | Kathi Moore

One of the first things you see as you enter Koko FitClub, located at 11581 Geist Pavilion Drive, Suite 110 in Fishers, is a framed sign reading, “in a gym, this is where the mirror would go.” In short order you realize there are no mirrors here. No clanging free weights. No sweaty weight machines. No pool. No sauna. Koko FitClub has effectively removed all such intimidating things found in “normal” health clubs, concentrating instead on the things you need to achieve your health and fitness goals. “Koko Smartraining is customized, efficient and convenient,” says Meghann Wilson, 27, who, with business partner Chintu Patel, has opened three Koko FitClub locations on Indy’s northside since last July in Noblesville, Fishers, and now, Carmel. “Everything is set up with your Koko Key so the machine gives you custom settings and workouts based on your goals, your range of motion and current fitness level,” added Wilson. “You keep a steady pace moving from exercise to exercise with no wait time, so you get the benefits of a 90-minute workout in just 30 minutes.” The program is nearly flawless. Each time a member goes to the club, they do a different workout. A single machine can facilitate more than 100 exercises. For cardio development, the treadmills and elliptical machines have their own 15 programs. Members listen to a MP3 player as a world-class trainer literally walks them through each workout. New programs are introduced seasonally and are said to provide twice the calorie burn of traditional cardio in just 15 minutes. Members have their own web page to track progress and gain nutritional assistance based on personal goals for weight loss, strength training, a maintenance “protection” plan, as well as specific programs for those suffering from arthritis, back pain, diabetes, men’s health or recovery from breast cancer. As workouts are completed points are earned and members receive recognition and prizes as they progress toward their goals. Each machine has a video screen to guide the user through their workout, including a pace bar that keeps you moving at optimal speed (no more crashing weights.) It appears foolproof; you must do each exercise properly and in a timely manner. Everything is digitally tracked to monitor your progress, which of course, is motivating. Wilson said she was drawn to this franchise for many

reasons. Like many girls, she struggled with her body, though she was a high school athlete. In college she dated a football player (now a CFL player) who introduced her to good workouts and she eventually became his trainer. Her parents, longtime Subway franchisers, encouraged her to make the leap into ownership, introducing her to Patel, the financial end of the business. Their goal is to develop the market into 10-plus locations, including downtown Indianapolis. “The biggest challenge,” explained Wilson, “is educating people about our program and how different and effective it is. We don’t measure success by weight loss. At Koko, you’ll focus on strength and health from the inside out, burning fat, measuring strength gains and increasing lean muscle levels.” That starts with the name. Koko is a Japanese word meaning one-by-one. For more information visit www.kokofitclub.com.

Indiana Bastille Day as Louisville, Kentucky, but has not lost the relaxed back yard feel. You will feel that you have stepped into the heart of a small town in France with the park setting as you stroll along the famous “L’Avenue des Champs Elysees,” taste French wines and Indiana beers, listen to an authentic French singer, watch a Petanque tournament, and enjoy a variety of French and American cuisine. There will be costumed performers who will provide a dimension of French history to the event. And if you speak the French language, they invite you to do so. There will be plenty of activities for young children including an opportunity to make a candlelight lantern and participate in the traditional lantern procession at dusk. The celebration concludes with a choreographed laser light show sure to please all ages.

Photos & Story | Lynda Thies For the third consecutive year, a unique event known as Indiana Bastille Day is being held on Saturday, July 13, from 5:00-11:00 p.m. in Fortville’s Landmark Park. Bastille Day is recognized as the French national holiday and is celebrated much like the Fourth of July with fireworks, music, and food but with a Parisian feel. The event is presented this year by atGeist.com and organized by Six Feet Up, a Geist-based company owned by Geist residents Calvin and Gabrielle Hendryx-Parker in conjunction with Alliance Francaise. The event is a free family event that offers a taste of French culture right down to the temporary French street names. Bastille Day is celebrated in France but is also celebrated in other countries. Typically, those celebrations are small groups of people who have some sort of ancestral or cultural connection to France. In fact, that is exactly how Indiana Bastille Day started. Gabrielle Hendryx-Parker moved to Fortville with her husband, Calvin, a native of New Palestine, after the couple met and worked together in San Francisco. Gabrielle grew up in Burgandy, France, a town the size of Fortville, and was feeling nostalgic for her hometown after the 2009 Fourth of July celebration. Her desire was for the couple’s young sons to experience some of her country’s traditions. Since they were not able to travel to France, they decided to create the event at home. The couple invited friends and neighbors to experience French cuisine, music, fireworks, and their back yard celebration swelled to a crowd of 70. The reaction was favorable and since they outgrew their home, the idea to share Bastille Day with the town was born. Indiana Bastille Day’s humble beginning from a small back-yard crowd has grown steadily to attracting 2,000 people from as far north as Fort Wayne and as far south 20

Calvin shared, “I think this was the last thing that Fortville expected! But I think the thing that is important is that it is about the enjoyment of all things French. You don’t have to know the language to enjoy French food, play Petanque, or enjoy French music and the activities that are going on at the event.” The event provides local vendors as well to offer a variety of activities and experiences to blend both cultures. The couple is so grateful for the partnership with the town of Fortville and has worked hard to create an event that all Geist-area residents will not only enjoy, but they will make a beloved family tradition for years to come. What once started as a desire to share Gabrielle’s heritage with their children has turned into a day for the entire community. Come to Bastille Day, enjoy your neighbors, and experience a bit of French culture. You won’t be disappointed. Check out the website for further details www.indianabastilleday.com.

uch has been made about the inherent beauty and vast functionality of Apple’s iconic iPhone. Indeed, actually making phone calls is fairly low on the list of things most people enjoy about their iPhone. Thus, it shouldn’t be surprising that a segment of Indiana’s art community sees the iPhone as a digital canvas. “It’s a beautiful blending of science and art,” according to Katz Lee Finch, an iPhone artist. Now, a mash-up of such talent and tech is on public display in Fishers.

M

In mid June, a digital art show called iCreate opened at Launch Fishers, featuring more than 70 pieces of photographic art produced entirely using iPhones. “It’s really unbelievable,” enthused John Wechsler, founder of the business incubator located at the Fishers Public Library. “When you look at this photography, and then consider it was all processed on the iPhone, it’s just mind-blowing that these artists are that talented and that creative.” The gallery is a welcome mix of real-life and abstract photographic images. The featured local artists (Finch, Becky Brill, Rad A. Drew, and Colman S. Love) have drawn inspiration from recognizable Indianapolis landmarks (think Crown Hill Cemetery) while also offering a peek at the human condition with compelling shots of everyday people. “The opportunity actually gives me goose bumps,” said Lee

Finch, who was also the gallery’s volunteer curator. “I am passionate about people experiencing art in a fun and unique way, and this is a great opportunity on many different levels.” Lee Finch explained that some of the images are presented as “straight photography” with no editing. Others range greatly in their use of filters and other processing techniques. All are displayed on either canvas or cotton paper and presented with title and artist information beneath each photo. While it doesn’t really need defending, Lee Finch is certain about iPhone art’s legitimacy. “When the earliest cameras first came on the scene, they were criticized by traditional artists because it was a new and little understood medium. Yesterday’s un-convention is now today’s convention, and iPhone art will soon become a convention.” Wechsler agreed the show is a stunning example of blended science and art – something that Launch Fishers, as gallery host, wanted to provide to its members and the public. “If you

look at what it takes to start up a business, there is a ton of creativity that goes into that. It really is part science and part art, so having the iPhone show here is fundamental to what we do.” Wechsler added that Launch Fisher’s 16,000-square footprint is a welcome, additional space for this and future community events. According to Lee Finch, central Indiana has a growing community of iPhone artists who understand the obvious: that the most important camera you own is the one you have with you. “What we have now is pocket creativity. What used to be very expensive technology is now at out fingertips.” That’s what the world is about now – creating visual content and then sharing it with family and friends. I suspect iCreate would make Steve Jobs proud.

A Gleeful Celebration of Indiana’s Finest Coming to the Palladium on July 20 | J. Andy Murphy If you build it … they will come! These words will forever be attached to a movie (Field of Dreams) that was about a baseball field. So how do they relate to an event christened with the title ACROSS THE ARTS that is not about sports but people who write books, movies, newspaper columns, magazines, publishers, bloggers, and the ever-expanding social media and will appear not in a field of grass, but in a brick and mortar building that holds 1600 seats? The foundation for the two stories is the same: It all started with a dream of doing something special for our own literary community to celebrate the written word across all genres of expression. The dream was easy. But the back story of accomplishing such a thing was thought to be nearly impossible.

Game Plan:

Need a super site. Nationally-recognized talent. Celebrity Hosts. Volunteers. Publicity. Sponsors. Game show with lots of prizes. Website. Facebook. Twitter. And last, but most important: Ticket sales and a box office staff with the important role of supporting the event by taking reservations to guarantee a seat and a chance to win luxury prizes throughout the day with a full program of interviews, panels and presentations followed by an After Party of wine and cheese and then a special Heartland Film! WHEW!

Was this Dream too big?

Was the thought of not trying to do it even bigger? “Yes,” said the gathered core team who put on their spikes and headed out into the world of reality. Excitement was embedded in their mitts as they surveyed the field of action. Eyes wide open, this team kept the dream right in front of them. First pitch to throw out: Recruiting the team. Would celebrated and award-winning Indiana talent, recognized nationally, take part in a home-town game with the only pay back reward being to share their personal stories, offer suggestions to other dreamers, and to mingle with those who have followed their 26

geist c o m m u n i t y

Geist_July_2013.indd 26

careers. A few pitches would test the waters of home runs versus strike outs. So the balls were thrown and then, just like the movie, the talent began to emerge from the fields.

First came:

Terre Haute’s own Michael Shelden, author of four literary biographies, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist, Orwell: The Authorized Biography, which was also a New York Times Notable Book. For fifteen years, he was a features writer for the London Daily Telegraph, and for 10 years, he served as a fiction critic for the Baltimore Sun. His latest biography is a groundbreaking account of the early life of Winston Churchill, Young Titan: The Making of Winston Churchill. And then: Edward Kelsey-Moore. Mr. Kelsey-Moore was born in Indianapolis, and his short fiction has been published in many literary magazines including: Indiana Review, African American Review, and Inkwell. His new novel is entitled The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat! KelseyMoore is published by Knopf. His short story, Grandma and the Elusive Fifth Crucifix, was selected as an audience favorite on National Public Radio’s Stories on Stage series. He is also a noted cellist. And another Indiana icon said, “Add me to the team!” Yes, it is Dan Wakefield, an American novelist, journalist, and screenwriter. His best-selling novels, Going All the Way (1970) and Starting Over (1973), were made into feature films. Amongst his other notable works are Island in the City: The World of Spanish Harlem (1959), the pioneering survey of Spanish Harlem, a Puerto Rican settlement in New York, and New York in the Fifties (1992), based on the Beat Generation in Greenwich Village, which led to a documentary film in 2001. And then Carmel’s own Rebecca Dotlich, a poet and children’s picture book author published by Simon and Schuster/Knopf/Harper Collins and Henry Holt said, “I’d love to be there!” The scouting continued and weeks passed until, in a hushed

newsletter | july 2013

room, the team knew the bases were loaded with the score board totaling 29 Yes –0 No. Just a couple calls left to fill in the managers for the day … those who knew the game and how to get to the plate of interviewing. The sound of the balls being hit out of the park now carry the names of Team Manager Debbie Knox (Anchor, WISHTV) with assists from Amanda Heckert (Editor, Indianapolis Monthly); Suzanne McAlister (Full Circle/Channel 40); Amber Strong (Real Scene TV/WTHR-13); and Dick Wolfsie putting on the uniform of game show host for “Wait, Wait! Do Tell Me” with lots of prizes tucked up his sleeve to give away to the fans in the audience during the game. (Hint: Make sure you check under your seat when you arrive and settle in.) Talk about stealing bases!

Tickets:

Take advantage of a special limited discounted ticket offer. If you order by phone, ask for Across the Arts event and tell the box office you want the “WriteStuff” promo price offer of *2 tickets for $30. If you order online, use WRITESTUFF in the promo code box. This $30 limited ticket price includes the full day of presentations, After Party, and special Heartland Film showing. P.S. Popcorn will be served courtesy of *Just Pop In! It’s an American tradition and Jeff Hutson, Chief Gondolier, will be singing a new version of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” to open this exciting day.

Just one last detail to fill. The field – the site – where people would come to see this “first” of its kind in the biggest game of all. Why not dream big the team decided. The call was made to the Center for the Performing Arts. “You’re up,” said the umpire to the team captain as the number was dialed. Sitting in silence, the team waited as the captain made the pitch. Quietly the phone was hung up. The pitch was thrown and the ball sailed out of the park … The Center for the Performing Arts had given this dream the home field of the magnificent Palladium Theater. How sweet is that! Now, as we enter the bottom of the 9th, the fans will have the chance to hit the ball out of the park by making a reservation (317-843-3800) as we ask our community to support Indiana’s finest literary talent lining the bases for a day of entertainment, prizes, wine & cheese After Party, and a special Heartland Film movie. Batters up! Take the field to support Indiana’s finest as they present Across the Arts. This is one event you don’t want to miss! It’s a Home Run of an event. july 2013

Indiana Gun Club A Long-Standing Tradition 30

geist c o m m u n i t y

| Clark Edwards When I was a child, I spent many enjoyable hours at the Indiana Gun Club. Sometimes I was shooting, but mostly I was watching my dad and his friends practice or shoot in competitions. We would often pull our pop-up camper to the Indiana Gun Club and camp on the property for the weekend when there was a sanctioned shooting event. I have very fond memories of my dad, Jim Edwards, who passed in 1996, and his friends, Doc Gottschalk and Stu Warner, playing cards in the clubhouse on Wednesday nights. Some nights, we would venture over to Kingons Gun Club and shoot there as well. I grew up on the East side of Indianapolis in Irvington, and it seemed like we were

In addition to membership, instruction and corporate events have had steady growth. Recently, the club had a few dozen individuals from a petroleum company out for a day of team building. You will hear Sporting Clays sometimes referred to as Golf with Guns. Sporting Clays is a great way to enjoy a round with family and friends and maybe a cigar or two. Phillip is tireless in constantly working to bring about improvements to the club including the Sporting Clay course and the new card-operated systems for the stations on all the disciplines. You must also see for yourself the tremendous new retail operation within the club. Ask for Rich Self when you are in, and he will get you on the right track for the perfect firearm to suit your needs. In fact, the Indiana Gun Club is the only gun club in the Midwest where you can try before you buy. In a sport where each individual shooter can react or perform very differently with each brand of shotgun, this is a very big deal. As some will tell you, sometimes the gun picks the shooter – not the other way around. If you are looking for a place to shoot rifles and pistols, Amanda and Phillip also manage the Atterbury Shooting Complex in Edinburgh. I have frequented the Atterbury facility many times, and it is well worth the drive. Within the Hidden Gem that is the Indiana Gun Club, there lay an even bigger hidden bounty. This gold mine of knowledge and experience comes in the form of Bob Self. Bob is an N.S.C.A. Master Class Caesar Guerini Pro Staff Shooter. Caesar Guerini is a preeminent Italian manufacturer of fine shotguns. The stated goal of Caesar Guerini is to build the finest quality shotguns that people enjoy shooting. After 10 years as a Browning staff shooter, Caesar Guerini lured Bob away; and he has been excelling with a Caesar Guerini shotgun ever since. Bob has won world championships and has instructed as far away as Thailand. Not only do we have a world champion in our midst, but Bob is an instructor as well. Bob Self taking aim constantly driving to get to the Indiana Gun Club; so I find it amusing now that I live a stone’s throw from the club and it is in my daily surroundings. At the Indiana Gun Club, located at 14926 East 113th Street in Fishers, you can participate in Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays. In addition, they have a full retail store for all your shooting needs. The club has been there since the 1960’s and has enjoyed tremendous growth over the last 5 years since Phillip Baker and his wife, Amanda, have managed the property. During the Bakers’ tenure, the membership has risen from approximately 500 to over 1100 members today. Membership costs $100 the first year and then $50 for every year thereafter. Membership entitles you to discounts of $2 per round of Trap and Skeet and $10 per round of Sporting Clays.

From the moment you meet Bob, you quickly learn that he is dedicated to helping his pupils learn to shoot better and delights in watching them improve. Bob offers instruction to all ages in private or group settings. Within the same day, Bob may find himself one hour giving some fine-tuning advice to a lifelong shooter who is going pheasant hunting in Spain to the next hour instructing a junior novice shooter; both are equally important to him. When the super bowl was in town, Bob hosted an event for members of the NFL. Bob also offers gun fitting from his office on site. Bob can be reached at shotgundisciplin@aol.com. I encourage you to discover this family-friendly gem in Fishers. Come out and enjoy some Trap, Skeet, or Sporting Clays. Or drop by to observe others. And keep the gun club in mind for your next corporate outing. Whether you are new to the sport or looking for some additional instruction, Bob will be happy to work with you to enhance your enjoyment. july 2013

BARTHULY IRRIGATION: A BUSINESS OF BROTHERS | Neil Lucas Brothers Larry and Ken Barthuly have been operating their business, Barthuly Irrigation, Inc., together for 21 years. The business’ beginnings can be traced back to a summer job Ken got in the eighth grade while living in New Hampshire. The Barthuly’s father wanted to instill a strong work ethic in his sons and therefore demanded that his youngest son Ken get a job at an early age. Ken, while “technically” underage, got a job working in the landscaping/irrigation department for the Anheuser Busch plant in Merrimack, New Hampshire. Shortly thereafter, Ken helped Larry to get a summer job in the same irrigation department with the King of Beers. The boys spent several summers working at various irrigation companies. Following graduation from Purdue University, Larry got a job in the insurance industry where he worked for six years.

While Larry was working in the insurance business, Ken followed Larry to Purdue. In the summer of Ken’s senior year at Purdue, the brothers agreed to install an irrigation system in their parent’s newly purchased house in Crown Point, Indiana. Larry, still working in insurance, went to the office that next week and told one of his co-workers that he and his brother had just finished installing an irrigation system at their parent’s house. The co-worker asked if they would do the same at her house in Carmel. While doing the installation at the co-worker’s house, her neighbors started to stop by and ask Ken and Larry for a quote to install a system at their house. This experience gave the brothers the belief that they could start their own irrigation business. Ken said he and Larry made it a goal to have their own business in order to have some control of their future. Both of the Barthuly brothers watched as their father’s career, a pilot flying private aircraft for large corporations, was constantly

subject to the whims of corporate management. Their father’s profession required the Barthuly’s to move frequently. In starting the business, the brothers had little to no resources and no building from which to operate, except for Larry’s one bedroom apartment at Pickwick Farms. Each night the brothers would carry the materials they needed for the next day’s job up to Larry’s apartment, including 20’ pieces of PVC pipe, for fear that they would be stolen otherwise. Ken said he can still remember sitting in Larry’s apartment having a beer at the end of a long day with piles of PVC pipe under his feet. By providing quality service at reasonable prices with a personal touch, their irrigation business grew quickly. As the business grew, they progressed from working out of Larry’s apartment, to working out of his house, to ultimately, in 2000, building their own facility at their current Zionsville location on 106th street. Three years ago they expanded beyond the Indianapolis market when they bought an existing irrigation business in Lafayette. The work ethic instilled in them by their father and the technical expertise that they developed in those summer jobs in the irrigation business gave the Brothers the tools they needed to build Barthuly Irrigation into one of the largest irrigation companies in the state of Indiana According to Ken and Larry, the future of irrigation will be directed toward water conservation because it is inevitable that water regulations will become more stringent and water more expensive. To meet the future, Barthuly Irrigation is one of the few companies to be recognized as Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditors (“CLIA”) in the state of Indiana. Not

surprisingly, Barthuly Irrigation offers an array of water saving devices, some of which are relatively inexpensive. For example, Barthuly Irrigation offers a rain sensor that can be installed on your home irrigation system for only $228 that shuts off your system when it is raining and restarts it when the rain is over. How many times have we driven down the street in a blinding rain and seen someone’s sprinkler wasting both water and money.

Tips on hiring an irrigation company: • Before getting a quote, make sure the contractor actually comes to your home to check your water pressure, the sun/shade relationship in your yard, water tap location, your preferred location for the water controller and where the best place to “hide” the green valve box. • Ask if the contractor can complete the job where there is a risk of encountering tree roots during installation. Some contractors will give you a quote but will either refuse to do a job or will increase the price once they discover the presence of tree roots. • Does the price include the cost of a permit • Make sure the water coverage plan is designed so that the amount of water going on the turf is different from your plantings (trees, shrubs, etc.). They each have different water requirements. • Because there are no licensing requirements for irrigation specialists in Indiana, make sure they are bonded and insured but most of all BUYER BEWARE!!!

ccording to the Indiana Historical Society, Army Sergeant Robert “Bob” Albright is Indiana’s first and only combat photographer from WWII. He’s the recipient of two Bronze Stars, a Bronze Star Medal and a Victory Medal. “All I wanted was to fly,” says Bob, who will celebrate his 90th birthday on July 9.

Due to an over-abundance of pilots, Bob joined the Army. Immediately after basic training, his entire unit was shipped into infantry – except him. The military was prepping for the D-Day invasion on Normandy. “Someone was looking out for me,” commented Bob, for he was sent to Paramount Studios in NYC to learn photography. He took photos of models and actresses, then was sent to Hawaii. “Kodak kept film in some caves in Hawaii, and that’s where I was sent to july 2013

prep for the Pacific theater,” Bob explains. It was here that he learned Japanese from some local boys, whom Bob terms “Nese boys.” This informal language training would later prove valuable. Sgt. Albright was shipped to the Philippines and then to Okinawa. He vividly recalls the voice of “Tokyo Rose” over the airwaves announcing that “we know you’re comin’ and we’re ready for ya.” Not quite. On April 1, 1945, the U.S. forces (along with the British) arrived in the north, and the Japanese were prepared in the south. It was unprecedented and unexpected to have been met with zero opposition, but that’s exactly what happened. An armada of some 1,300 U.S. and Allied ships lay off the coast of Okinawa carrying some 548,000 troops (at Normandy, there were 284 ships). It was here that the final battle of World War II was fought. The bloodiest battles of the war took place on Okinawa. If it is possible to have experienced WWII with a VIP pass,

Bob managed to do just that. For Bob wore a pass around his neck hand signed by Admiral Nimitz and General MacArthur, indicating that “no one is to interfere with this soldier’s duties.” The “duties” were left undefined, and Bob capitalized on this, explaining that he “may have pushed the limits a bit.” He then rephrases: “I got away with a lot!” It was on Okinawa where, after the capture of the Kadena airfield, Bob took his first battle photographs. Having come ashore with the third wave; the 24th Corps lead by General Hodge, the soldiers captured Kadena airfield. It was here that Bob and some fellow soldiers had a self-imposed mission: “Liberate the Still.” This operation, while not a formal order, involved commandeering the still from the Kadena airfield hospital and turning it over to the cooks. Bob indicated that even the hospital was protected with trip wires and explosives. Apparently, it was worth the risk: with some jam and sugar added to alcohol, Bob said it was the best brandy he’d ever had. When asked about weapons or guns, Bob said the Army gave him a rifle and described it further: “It was more of a nuisance. What am I supposed to do with it? I have to use both hands on my camera, then had this rifle strapped across me. I would lean it up against a tree and hope I wouldn’t forget to pick it back up.” He was finally able to ditch the rifle, but then was issued a 45 automatic. When it was clear to Bob that he could throw it with more accuracy than fire it, he cleaned it and wrapped it in plastic so that when he went through an inspection, it was ready for presenting. Bob clearly argued that there was no “combat” involved for his “combat photographer” designation. Sgt. Albright does confess that he had a camera literally shot out of his hands, although he never suffered from any injuries. Bob was frequently behind enemy lines taking photos. Bob and another soldier were ordered to take a Jeep around Sugar Loaf Hill to “peek around.” They were asked to do this because the battle for this hill on Okinawa was a bloody dance. The Marines would claim it during the day; the Japanese would regain control over it at night. The dominance for Sugar Loaf Hill would flip 11 times in what proved to be some of the heaviest losses for both sides. Some units were totally wiped

out. The island was porous with an estimated 60 miles of caves and tunnels in which the Japanese would conceal themselves and their weapons. There were literally cannons on tracks that the Japanese would wheel out at night. On this particular mission, the control for the Hill had flipped 10 times at this point. Bob and his comrade found themselves deep behind enemy lines. Bob was able to capture photographs of the key tunnels, one of which had steel doors, and bring these back to command. Realizing how far they had traveled, they needed to retreat before a sniper bullet found them. The escape route from their location on Sugar Loaf Hill led them down to the beach, which, fortunately, was at low tide, revealing the land mines littering the area. Thanks to the picric acid on the detonators, the bombs were yellow, allowing an obvious path for the men to follow. Along the route, they ran into a group of Seabees. These are military and civilian engineers who were responsible for, among other things, figuring out how to create runways on sand. They were able to build a landing strip by linking brilliantly-designed, lightweight sheets of metal together. Bob informed these men of the main tunnel with the metal door. These brave Seabees risked their lives and welded the “damn thing shut.” Amazingly, no snipers had scopes set on that area during this critical time. That night proved to be a turning point for the Marines. As a result of the efforts of Bob and the Seabees, the Marines were able to capture Sugar Loaf Hill once and for all. Bob and the engineers were awarded Bronze stars for their acts of valor. Bob dramatically downplays his role: “I told them they should figure out a way to seal it. They did it, not me.” For Sgt. Albright, this was his first of two earned Bronze Stars, among other medals he would receive. Due to the nature of Bob’s responsibilities and the sensitivity of his orders, Bob was mostly alone or with one other soldier who would have been his driver. However, Sgt. Albright met a fellow Hoosier and became friends with this man. He was none other than Ernie Pyle. On base,

the photographers and journalists were present for daily briefings. It is here that Bob and Ernie forged a friendship. One day, Bob and Ernie were told that the following day they would both be going to the island of le Shima to report on what was going on there. Later that night, Bob received different orders that were “restricted” (top secret) that he was to head to the southern area of Okinawa. Bob was to photograph a plant which manufactured 2-man and 3-man submarines, the type used during the attack on Pearl Harbor. The trip to le Shima would prove fatal to Ernie, for that is where a Japanese sniper’s bullet found him. As the war officially ended, Bob realized his work was only beginning. Sgt. Albright spent 3 days alone with his new patrol made up of Japanese soldiers (former POWs). The rest of the Allied troops were leaving, and the “occupation” troops were arriving soon. During this time, while clearing out the caves where many Japanese soldiers were still hiding, a grenade was tossed out, landing at Bob’s feet. As fate would have it, it was a dud. Yet nothing could have prepared him for what he was about to encounter. Bob would be part of the first U.S. military personnel to find the Bataan Death March survivors.

second Bronze star for his acts of valor in acquiring these photos for the War Commission. Sgt. Albright was also awarded a Victory Medal from the Philippines government for his work in photographing the Bataan survivors.

One of Bob Albright's photos from a USO tour featuring comedian Jerry Colonna (left) and Bob Hope (right). (His descriptions are horrific and aren’t shared here.) The Japanese patrol did not realize that Bob spoke and understood their language. So when the patrol would say (in Japanese) “don’t take them there…” Bob knew exactly where he wanted to go.

Bob’s military photography experience launched him into the corporate world after serving his country, Eli Lilly hired him as their first photographer. The FDA announced that it would no longer accept artist’s sketches for approval submissions from drug companies. In fact, all medical textbooks at that time were artistic renderings of all things medical. In this time of change for the medical and drug industry, Bob was the right man for the job. Bob was one of the first to photograph through a microscope. He and a team at Lilly built their own equipment to accomplish their assignments. A true pioneer in medical photography, Bob was awarded many international accolades. This proof is for you

A new Lake EXperience planned for Geist | Pat Carlini A new musical event is planned for the shores of Geist this summer and the supporters are already hoping this will become an annual tradition! Long time Geist resident Mike Mercho is spearheading the effort dubbed the Geist Lake Experience set for July 20th. The plan is to set the bands up along a grassy stretch of land located in the Diamond Pointe neighborhood facing out to the southside island on the reservoir. The bands will set up along the shoreline for all boaters to enjoy! “I want to see families with kids, adults and everyone who wants to have some fun on the water,” says Michael. “The Fourth of July is always fun on the water, we just need more events like that.” Michael is working closely with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Marion County officials and the DNR to make it all happen. “They’ve been great to work with,” says Michael, who also has worked to get the neighbors’ okay on having a concert so close to home.

Michael – who is Project Manager with Keystone Construction – has been working on the Geist Experience project for months, and has secured three dance bands for entertainment: DJ Nicolas Rage, the Dub Knight, and nationally known Caroline D’Amore. All have agreed to perform. Michael says they originally had planned on the bands playing from a barge closer to Cocktail Cove at the other end of the lake, but decided to keep the music on land for the first year.

Supporters of the Geist Experience are partnering with the Kaleidoscope Foundation – a United Way Agency dedicated to providing low income families with affordable out of school enrichment programming for their children (www.kycindy.org). They also hope some area businesses will help with sponsorship, as well. In the meantime, you can keep up with the progress of the Geist Experience on their Facebook page or go online to atGeist.com.

The island just off of Admirals Sound on the south end of Geist Reservoir will be a good place to view the concerts from your boat. Summer Special

Geist’s Consigned By Design Opens New Location in Fishers | Pat Carlini In Italy, they call it “Il Mercantino” or “the little market” when referring to consignment shops. In recent years “the little market” is big business and in the Fishers/Geist area, consignment shopping is hotter than ever! “Consigned by Design” — an upscale furniture/housewares consignment shop – opened its doors at 7035 E. 96th street (Near Sam’s Club) last month. This is the store’s second location after several years of success at its Geist location (11659 Fox Road). “We had about 700 visitors for the Grand Opening,” says Dana Johnson who owns the store with husband Jeff. “We had a great turnout and great sales!” The Johnsons took over the Geist store in 2009 (it originally opened in 2004) and business has been booming ever since. So, what’s the attraction? “Repurposing is very popular now,” says Dana. “One of your ‘under loved’ items could be exactly what somebody else is looking for. You make money without the work of a garage sale!” Consigned by Design is full of clean furniture arranged with coordinating accessories. These are not thrift shop pieces at thrift shop prices. I found items ranging from $18 decorative shelves to a Fairmont Designs table with 6 chairs for $1,399.00. The emphasis is on quality and not just the lowest possible price. Speaking of prices, all tags show the date of the next price drop (items only stay 120 days) leading to a waiting game as shoppers hold off to see if their desired item is still there when the price drops. “I tell people if they like it, buy it today because most likely when they come back it will be gone,” laughs Jeff. “I’ve seen it happen to my own mother!” Consigned by Design is now open daily from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm. If you are interested in selling your items, give them a call at 317-823-1300. You can get more information at www.consignedbydesigngeist.com, and on their new Facebook page, as well. Stay tuned, we may see more Consigned by Design shops pop up if “the little market” continues to be such big business! july 2013

| Kathi Moore It had been a long drive from Daytona, Florida to Indianapolis in the confined space of a dog-transport trailer. A good pee is usually the first thing the dogs need, but little Candy leaped off the truck and dropped to the ground, begging instead for a belly rub. A couple dozen volunteers from the Prison Greyhounds Rescue program forgot how cold they were in the blustery February temperatures, as they saw the little black and white greyhound, followed off the transport by five other dogs, newly retired from the Daytona Beach Greyhound Track. It was the fourth dog drop for this rescue group, formed in 2012 with a mission to help these young retired racers make the transition from professional athlete to pet, and ultimately finding their forever family home. In March of last year, the Putnamville Correctional Facility in Greencastle began collaborating with the Prison Greyhound program. It’s the first program of its kind in a state-operated facility, and Superintendent Stanley Knight has already expressed his

desire to expand the program even more. Currently they take four dogs at a time and assign a team of two handlers to each. “The handlers are participants and graduates of our Clean Lifestyle Is Freedom Forever (CLIFF) program,“ explained Alisia Lawrence, public information officer. “This is a substance abuse and methamphetamine recovery group, and the handlers must also have a clear conduct record with no history of violence or acts of cruelty against animals.”

feel a sense of accomplishment when their dogs excel in the program. Many have expressed a desire to work with animals after their release. More importantly, the offenders value the companionship the dogs provide, as they live within the housing unit with the handlers,” he added. “They are permitted to accompany the handlers to work, programs, education, chapel and recreation but not the dining room or medical unit.”

P

Prison Greyhounds Rescue in Indianapolis realized these nonviolent inmates are eager to make amends, and this might help solve the foster problem created by too many dogs and not enough homes to foster them until they are adopted. “It is a win-win program,” commented Michelle Padilla, a Prison Greyhound volunteer (and adopter). “We help rehabilitate their inmatehandlers who gain job skills, teamwork experience and the opportunity to explore a better way of living before being released into our community.”

Greyhounds are a unique breed of dog dating back to the Middle East about 4,000 years ago. Their running speed is second only to the cheetah, capable of reaching 45 mph in just three strides. In spite of this athleticism, the dogs are known to be very gentle, nonconfrontational and good-natured pets – a kind of “45 mph couch potato”. Before 1982 it was highly unusual

GREYHOUND FUN FACTS • All greyhounds have tattoos in their ears; the left ear tells the litter registration number, and the right tells the birthday and what order of litter they were tattooed • Retirement comes at age 2-5, and life expectancy is 12-14 years

to see a greyhound other than on a racetrack or the side of a bus, but in recent years adoption rates have grown. This is attributed to the American Greyhound Adoption movement that began working with racetracks to place retired racing dogs in newly formed rescue groups across the country. In 2011, 11,759 greyhounds were registered to race at parimutuel tracks. They race for a brief 18 months or so and are then placed with adoption groups. The group must find foster homes to hold and socialize the dogs until they find permanent homes. Unfortunately,

these fosters are in short supply. Only 90% of the dogs are adopted, the rest live their retirement in cages or are often euthanized. Prison Greyhounds, Inc. is working to push that number to 100%. To learn more about becoming a foster or adopting a greyhound, visit prisongreyhounds.org.

• After six races, a dog is retired if they haven’t won/placed/shown • There are 22 greyhound tracks in 7 states, but casinos and offtrack betting are affecting their success • You can track online your dog’s racing record, litter mates, etc. • Greyhounds rarely bark and are highly intelligent • They can curl up into a tiny ball…or spread out on your bed!

Toilet Troubles?

Nobody likes to talk about it but it can be one of the biggest aggravations in your home: a toilet that won’t flush. As the amount of water per flush has been reduced, some toilets simply can’t handle it. TOTO can. TOTO was designing low volume flushing systems years before they were required and they continue to maintain flushing tests more rigorous than industry standards for true one flush performance and water savings. With three different flushing technologies you can count on TOTO to flush it all down the first time, every time. Visit our showroom and learn more. Say good by to toilet troubles with TOTO. ne of the most talked about donut shops in Geist delivered a first round TKO to our Donut War judges. Tim’s Bakery in McCordsville, noteworthy for the line of people waiting outside to get the hot “out of the oven” donuts, delivered a one-two punch of deliciousness and family-style service that set the bar for the next three rounds.

Tom Britt interviews Tim’s Bakery owners Tim and Karen Fontaine at the first stop in the Donut Wars Tour.

Owners Tim and Karen Fontaine met at Tim’s first donut shop at Purdue University. Karen went from employee to Mrs. Fontaine and they decided to move back to Tim’s hometown of McCordsville. They purchased the building behind their home facing Pendleton Pike (or West Broadway if you are from McCordsville), bought some equipment, and put a sign in the window for Tim’s Bakery. Twenty years later, Tim’s has become the unofficial capital of the Town of McCordsville. With lines of people longer than the

BMV around the corner, Tim’s attracts locals and donut aficionados from all around. During a live video webcast, Neal Moore and I talked to various customers, die hard fans, and impartial judges to get a feel for the donut mecca. “My friends from Avon drive over here once a month to get these donuts,” commented one local standing in line. When asked about the Donut Wars pitting four local donut shops against each other, several visitors asked, “Are there other donut shops at Geist?” One family waiting in line lived just down the road but had never sampled Tim’s. “We always go to Long’s Bakery but seen [sic] the signs (we plastered an atGeist.com and GeistTV.com banner on the building for the morning) so decided to give this a try.” After their 10 minute wait and at least a half-dozen donut holes later, Tim’s had more raving fans.

Speech,

“I’m not worried about being the best donut, I just want to make our customers happy, that’s it,” said Tim humbly as he demonstrated the twisting of a tiger tail, one of their most requested speciality donuts. His son Justin was more into the spirit of the competition, measuring the coveted “Donut Wars Cup” provided by Geist Jewelers for a display shelf. “I’m thinking about putting it on a shelf behind the counter,” he said with an air of confidence. Town of McCordsville’s Town Manager Tonya Galbraith stopped by to show her support. Donning an American flag blouse, Tonya was celebrating Flag Day and her birthday guaranteeing some extra luck for the hometown favorite. “People ask me all the time ‘where is McCordsville?’,” said Galbraith. “I tell them it’s where Tim’s Bakery is and they all say, ‘Oh! I know where that is!’” Judge Chris Tanner arrived with her

husband Matt via bicycle, for the purpose of enjoying “guilt-free donuts.” And as if Tim’s Bakery needed any more luck, seminary student Rob Hart delivered a blessing during the live webcast. Many thanks to the Fontaine family for their hospitality and patience as we took over their small dining area. We also want to thank our judges who are giving up their time and waistlines to judge four area donut shops. Your sacrifice for the greater good of Geist is not going unnoticed.

We’ve all heard (and likely used) the well-worn phrase that “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.” Well, Judge Carol Terzo apparently never got the memo. Indeed, in 2009, Carol and her husband spent a holiday weekend in Las Vegas for the express purpose of leaving Sin City having charted a new career path for the longtime jurist and Geist resident. “I was ready for something new – but what?” Terzo explained. “I’d recently completed a continuing education course in mediation; and that Thanksgiving weekend in Vegas, I had my ‘aha’ moment.” She would step down from the bench, and in 2011, launched The Mediation Option, LLC, a professional practice dedicated to helping parties deadlocked in legal dustups reach equitable, reasonable settlements. Lori Perryman and Elodie Meuser, attorneys and co-workers in the Marion County Prosecutor’s office, took note of Terzo’s career change – with twinges of envy. Well-acquainted with Terzo thanks to numerous appearances in her court, they, too, walked out the door and into partnership with the good judge. “I was weary of the prosecutor’s office,” remembered Perryman. “When Sundays rolled around and the workweek loomed, you could see a physcial change in me. Friends said, ‘You need to go – you need to be happy again.’” Meuser was equally fed up. “I literally took a walk around the block, made the decision to leave, and called the others to say I was coming, too.” After a lengthy career in healthcare, the firm’s fourth partner, Emily Bubb, came aboard, bringing a non-legal perspective to dispute resolution. “I was pursuing a career in mediation, and had just finished a job-shadow experience with a notparticularly-encouraging male mediator. Ten minutes later, Carol called me, and the rest is history!” The foursome knew the secret to success was in being different. “Most mediation services have a cold, uninviting conference room,” explained Terzo. “We knew there had to be a better way.”

and ferrets out what is often the hidden, but true reason for a dispute. “We play off each other,” said Judge Terzo. A few participants have stormed out, and doors are occasionally slammed. And the foursome says that’s okay.

“It’s important that people feel empowered, and that they be heard... We don’t want anyone to feel bullied or manipulated.” -Emily Bubb The approach seems to be working. Opposing legal counsel generally embraces the strategy, and clients often thank the team. “We help them move on,” said Terzo matter of factly. “We get agreement about 90 percent of the time.” Perhaps, in part, because clients are discouraged from ending up in a courtroom. “Arbitration is kind of like a private court trial with no rules and is usually the best solution,” offered Meuser. To learn more about The Mediation Option, go to www.tmoindy.com.

The Mediation Option makes the mediation process, which can be filled with emotion, as comfortable and informal as possible. Our practice encompasses all areas of civil and domestic mediation. At TMO we want to resolve differences, securing agreements for you.

Studying the psychological effects of the color palette (note to self – blues and browns are stress relievers), they painted and decorated the office suite at 9302 North Meridian Street accordingly, including living rooms fitted with plush couches and pillows. “We wanted clients to be comfortable; to relax,” said Perryman. With a clientele that is about 70 percent court-ordered, the team employs co-mediation that encourages candor by all

"You're looking live..." with Geist TV experimenting with streaming live video from various events – and with good reason,” noted Britt. “It gives us yet another touchpoint with our communities on a daily basis.”

| Neal G. Moore Anyone who has followed Tom Britt and his Townepost publishing empire knows that the micro-journalism media mogul is never satisfied with the status quo. What started as a website ten years ago (atGeist.com) has blossomed into magazines and websites for Fishers, Carmel, Zionsville, and Center Grove. Now, the focus (pun intended) is on Geist TV. “When sharing stories with a public audience, there’s probably no more powerful way to do so than with video,” explained Britt. “The combination of great moving pictures and compelling narrative, shared on the web via live streaming, is the reason we’re stoked about Geist TV.”

The title Geist TV is actually a bit of a misnomer. There is no television involved. We’re talking about live and on-demand content that is streamed on the Internet. But, most of us find it difficult to walk away from familiar naming conventions – so Geist TV it is. And besides, it’s just like watching television, with the added benefit of doing so when you want to on the

device of your choice. As a longtime TV news personality, I know that the most important element for Geist TV is great stories about people, places, things, and experiences. We’re counting on you to let us know about subjects worthy of the bright lights of Geist TV (okay, we don’t actually use bright lights, but hey, it fits the image). In a sense, you are our collective director – and in broadcasting, the director is the most important contributor. Producing live-streaming video is no different. So, put on your beret, settle into your director’s chair, and get the conversation going. Geist TV is on the air (oops, I mean on the Internet)!

Visit www.GeistTV.com to view archived, upcoming and live events.

Geist TV will feature a regular dose of fresh webcasts featuring news and information about the communities served via the Townepost network. We’ll be promoting your special events, showcasing our advertisers, and generally dishing on Geist culture (and Fishers, Carmel, Zionsville, and Center Grove). Special guests will be invited to share their stories; live webcasts will occur every Friday. “For the past four years or so, we have been

DONUT WARS: ROUND 2 Sunrise Over Fortville

unrise Bakery in Fortville, the least known of all competitors, delivered a sucker punch to our judges in round two of our Donut Wars. Disguised as an old gas station painted yellow, Sunrise Bakery is the pride of Fortville and Mt. Vernon schools. Owners Dave and Sharon Beatson bought the business 12 years ago which had been operating for the previous 8 years in an old gas station just past the pink elephant on Pendleton Pike (East Broadway).

Watch the full video from the Donut Wars Round 2 on www.GeistTV.com. (Left to right) Neal Moore and Tom Britt talked with Sunrise Bakery owners Dave and Sharon Beatson.

that the previous owner had retired, so I talked Sharon into buying it and the rest is history.” According to several locals, Sunrise has become a mecca for donut lovers, especially those that travel the busy Pendleton Pike corridor to and from work. No one knows this better than Stacie Picha, a neighbor who lives “three doors down” from Sunrise who stops in frequently with her son, Hunter. “I smell them baking every morning,” she said with a laugh. Her favorite donut: the cream filled long Johns with chocolate icing. Hunter on the other hand was happy with a tiger tail and plain yeast. He obviously hasn’t developed the sophisticated pallet of his mother. “One of our best sellers is the blueberry cake donut, it’s delicious,” said Sharon as she showed me around the display case, flanked by Mt. Vernon student workers. No doubt about it, Sunrise Bakery is worth the 3-mile drive to Fortville. Open Thursdays through Sunday from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., I’d recommend getting there early to get the best selection and hottest donuts. While you are there, take a look at the historic photos of the former service station and other newspaper clippings hanging on the walls. You might want to stoop down and pet the smaller pink elephant on the way out for good luck.

Go to www.GeistTV.com and watch an interview with Casler’s Kitchen & Bar General Manager Rosa Fonseca talking about the new patio and lounge furniture on the patio, bands coming this summer, and beach theme.

invest in your nest A Fish Tale | Pat Carlini This Geist home has a nice view of the water but the homeowner often thought how nice it would be to bring that water view inside the home. So, Scott Brown decided to “invest in his nest”, and built the aquarium of his dreams, stocked with colorful fish and a natural setting that would help to bring the outdoors in. “I would walk by this one wall every day thinking, I need something here,” says Brown. ”Then, I thought an aquarium would be just the answer!” Brown called Reef Aquarium, 5612 N. Keystone, which specializes in custom aquariums – fish tanks that are designed and built to fit in almost any spot in the home. Reef Aquarium’s Kevin Hoovler has been creating home aquarium spaces for many years, tucking fish tanks into libraries, hallways even one used as a backsplash in a kitchen. “We may do about eight large custom orders a year ranging in cost from two or three thousand dollars to as high as ten thousand dollars per aquarium,” says Kevin. Hoovler says that the fish business slowed down a few years ago due to the troubled economy, but today it’s a hot business once again. “I think people are staying put in their

homes and they want to make it their own special place,” says Hoovler. ”An aquarium really makes a statement.” There are two types of aquaria for the home: salt water, and a tropical aquarium using fresh water. The latter is the popular choice today and was selected for this Geist home. Hoovler built a floor-to-ceiling natural stone back drop that was pieced together on-site. A center water feature trickles into the tank, with green plantings surrounding a natural piece of driftwood. These touches give the aquarium a rain forest setting – perfect for the stars of the show, the fish! “It turned out great,“ says Brown, who’s really enjoying the new addition to his home. An aquarium can be a great addition to any home, adding a sense of relaxation to any room, and bubbly beauty overall! For more information and photos, go online to atGeist.com. Inaugural Geist Triathlon Has New Date, Course

GEIST TRIATHLON

Geist’s first sprint triathlon on July 27 will start and end at the Indianapolis Sailing Club, but a transition area at Holy Spirit at Geist has been added making the course one of the few two-transition courses in the Midwest. The event will also feature a prerace packet pickup cookout hosted by the Indianapolis Sailing Club for participants, their families, and prospective members. “We were going to use Holy Spirit at Geist’s parking south parking lot for participants anyways,” said organizer Tom Britt. “After looking at the narrow gate entry of the Sailing Club, we decided to move the second transition location to the church for safety reasons.”
