Governor Pence attended the event. He welcomed and celebrated the veterans present, cited the service of his father in Korea and shared that he’s a proud father of a Marine.
were planes belonging to other “wings” of the CAF, such as the Missouri wing who owns and maintains the B-25 that was on hand. “Honoring our veterans, educating about military aviation history and inspiring youth is what this event is all about,” says Chair of Warbird Expo Mark Van Zant, also a USAF veteran. “We are thrilled that our event has grown over the last couple of years, and we’ll be moving it next year to Indianapolis Regional Airport [formerly Mt. Comfort Airport].”
“We were so blessed with the veterans who attended this year, and having the Governor speak at our program was an honor," shares Schell.
With growth of the air show comes an increased need for additional volunteers. Jill Fewell of VeteransEvents.org and member of the WWII Roundtable, assisted with gathering veterans to the Warbirds Air Show.
It’s the love of military aviation that brought this gathering together. Attending the famous Oshkosh Air Show as a kid inspired Schell to join the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a weapons systems officer in an F-15E. “My position with the USAF was knows as a ‘back seater,’” says Schell.
“I was thrilled to be involved in gathering and coordinating veterans for honor flights and the Honoring Veterans Program,” shares Fewell. “We were able to sponsor their lunch and make it a special day for all of them. If I can help make veterans smile, feel respected and loved, then my job is complete.”
The CAF runs some of the larger air shows around the country, so it seemed natural to their members to rejuvenate the tradition locally, enlisting the help from others to make the event a success. On hand

More and more Indiana microbreweries are making plans to move north to tap into growing communities, such as Fishers, Carmel and Noblesville! Some are open now, and others are set to open soon.
The new facility will have a five-barrel brewing system that visitors can view through a large window, a patio and familyfriendly restaurant space. They will also offer some other local brews such as Scarlet Lane.

Named after preferred growing regions for hops, 48th Parallel Brewing Co. is planning to open in the heart of Fishers, but no schedule has been announced at this time. Jason Wuerfel opened Books & Brews in the Fishers area at 9402 Uptown Dr. It’s a unique concept mixing brews with food and a quiet spot to read a book. In Noblesville, Barley Island Brewing Company at 639 Conner Street is going strong, serving crowd favorites such as Dirty Helen and Blind Tiger. Head up to the Union Brewing Company at 622 N. Rangeline Rd. in Carmel where you will find artisan ales handcrafted two barrels at a time.
Or you can visit Upland Brewery, 820 E. 116th St. in Carmel, where you will find 10 draft lines and rotating seasonal selections. Fifteen years ago, fifth grader Alex Navarre invited her grandfather to attend the first USO-themed luncheon celebrating WWII veterans. Navarre was a student of Stephen Hardwick’s fifth grade class at Indian Creek Elementary, which called their event the “Tribute” luncheon. Her grandfather, Staff Sergeant Albert Navarre, served with the 104th Evacuation Hospital in General Patton’s Third Army. “I was so happy my grandfather was able to attend,” says Navarre. “He came from Ohio and was thrilled with the event.” In addition to any friends or relatives that the students knew, Hardwick reached out to the local American Legion for leads on WWII veterans, resulting in a total of 19 attendees that first year. The students served lunch for the veterans, including Spam, and sang songs from the ’40s such as Rosie the Riveter and military branch songs. “It was interesting to see all of the veterans there,” recalls Navarre.
“We saw how special and important it was to them and how much they appreciated their [military] song being sung.” When Navarre was a senior, she did her cadet teaching in Mr. Hardwick’s class. This arrangement enabled her to help his students prep for the Tribute, which was a completely different experience than what she recalled from the first year. “First of all, I realized all of the work that goes into a program,” says Navarre. “There were many more veterans in attendance and a lot more acts. Watching Hardwick transform himself into Jack Benny for laughs was a great addition to the Tribute. You could tell that he absolutely loves this, and it took on a life of its own. The best part is watching the joy on the faces of the veterans. It really takes them back in time.” Now a first grade teacher at Harrison Hill Elementary School in Lawrence Township, Navarre ran into Hardwick at a district-wide faculty meeting three years ago and offered to help out with the Tribute again. “He took me up on the offer and put me to work. I was amazed at how it grew over the years and loved how it all came together.”

“All of the effort that we put into this show is worth it when we see a veteran tearing up at their military branch song or singing along with the songs from the ’40s,” shares Hardwick. “It was a tough decision to have this be the last one. With 2015 marking 70 years since the end of WWII, it seems fitting to align with that end.” This year, it’s a reunion of sorts for former students of Hardwick’s who all want to help one last time. “The students have shown such incredible support for this event over the years,” shares Hardwick. “I am so grateful to have experienced such great kids who come back year after year.” Navarre has given the opening remarks at the last two shows with Hardwick in costume as Jack Benny. “Some of the veterans have been to every Tribute since its inception,” says Navarre. “They always come up to me after the show, telling me how they appreciate me helping out each year.” “As a fifth grader, it taught me a valuable life lesson, the kind that as a teacher, you hope for every student you teach gets to experience: having a positive impact on the lives of others. I have to thank
Steve for understanding just how important the lesson of showing appreciation to those you love is,” shares Navarre. “Seeing how my grandfather was touched by the gratitude years after he served was a deeply satisfying personal experience for me.” “It has been wonderful to witness this from all different angles. Last year, we had 95 veterans, both WWII and Korean War vets, plus countless others who came to witness the show,” shares Navarre. “It is really sad to end this tradition, but it is ending on a high note, and this will be a very special sendoff.”

and Special Forces until battling a traumatic brain injury. Now Zack is focused on helping other veterans who are suffering. He and his brother, Adam Smith, also Special Forces, are training for something really special — a coast-to-coast bike ride to raise awareness for PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. “This ride to me is an opportunity to be a part of something bigger than myself,” says Zack who has always believed in reaching out to help others in need. Zack used to attend Holy Spirit at Geist with his mom, Della Garner. He was very active in Life Teen before he joined the Army and was deployed twice to Iraq. Eight years ago, I wrote an article about Zack as he reached out to his Holy Spirit Life Teen contacts. He was looking to spread the word to Geist residents about sending cards and toiletry items to cheer up members of his unit stationed in Baghdad. Since then, he has not only served in Iraq and the U.S. Army Special Forces, but he has also completed two more tours in Afghanistan.
TWO GREEN BERETS RIDING COAST TO COAST WITH ONE CLEAR MISSION
Unfortunately, on September 11, 2013, Zack had a seizure while in Afghanistan. He learned that he had suffered a traumatic brain injury, and as a result, he was medically discharged. Writer / Janet C. Striebel
The Department of Veterans Affairs issued a report indicating that since 9/11, nearly 30 percent of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans treated at VA hospitals and clinics have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)*. This percentage would even be higher if we were to account for all those who haven’t been diagnosed.
“When medically separated from the special operations community, I felt I had lost my identity,” says Zack. “There was no heads up, no time to start mentally preparing myself; I went from standing among the U.S. Army’s elite to being a 30-year-old who was trying to figure out what he wanted to do with the rest of his life and balance a family at the same time.”
So far, first year treatment is costing the government more than $2 billion or about $8,300 per person. What’s more, veterans account for 20 percent of U.S. suicides**. This rising concern for PTSD and its effect on our soldiers is catching the attention of some citizens such as former Geist resident Zack Garner who has served in the Army

As they ride their bikes from coast to coast, they plan to visit the bases where Special Forces soldiers are stationed. Though Zack came from a small town in Geist, his mission is huge in his intention to help as many soldiers and their families as possible. “I know that there are plenty of soldiers that have been in my situation, and some that have had it much worse than I did," he says. "If I can take my struggles, share my lessons learned with others and provide resources to make their transition successful, then I have completed my goal of once again being a part of something bigger than myself.”

“Take the leap, and the net will appear,” said Sylvia McNair, one of 19 women featured in a book by Michael S. Maurer, “19 Stars of Indiana: Exceptional Hoosier Women,” IU Press. This statement by McNair adequately sums up Mickey Maurer’s approach to life. Maurer has been many things, and the term “entrepreneur” doesn’t seem to do him justice.

As part of his civic duties, Maurer served as the President of the Indiana Economic Development Corp., and the following year, he was named Indiana Secretary of Commerce by Governor Mitch Daniels. “I was paid $1 per year for that job,” shares Maurer emphasizing, “ONE dollar!” Maurer replaced Vera Bradley co-founder Pat Miller as the Indiana Secretary of Commerce. During the transition, Maurer referred to Miller as a “classy dame,” which was spun as an offensive comment by The Indianapolis Star. To the contrary, Maurer was offering Miller, who was not offended in the least, a sincere, heartfelt compliment. This incident inspired Maurer to pen the book, “19 Stars of Indiana: Exceptional Hoosier Women,” highlighting true role models for our society, both locally and globally. “I marvel at Mickey’s perseverance and passion by which he pursues the things that are important to him,” praises Christel House Founder and CEO Christel DeHaan. “He is making a difference. The success of the book influenced Maurer to create one honoring Hoosier men. In the book, he features, among others, Senator Richard Lugar, Eugene B. “Dr. Ejeta researched drought-tolerant and striga-resistant sorghum seeds which reported yields four times larger than traditional sorghum crops. He’s helped save the lives of millions of Africans through his food research which cannot be understated,” says Maurer. Dr. Ejeta still teaches at the Purdue University Glenn W. Sample School of Agriculture in West Lafayette.

“One snowy weekend, I thought I would arrange my underwater photographs into a book,” recalls Maurer. “One year later, the book went to print.” In his most recent book, “10 Essential Principles of Entrepreneurship,” Maurer features life lessons you never learned in school. He dedicates the book to his father, Julius Maurer, and his Uncle Mickey. “My dad and uncle owned Maurer Brothers Auto Parts at Ninth and Senate Avenue,” shares Maurer. “Out on the fence was a sign that read, ‘If you can’t stop in, smile as you go by.’” The lessons shared in the book are illustrated with examples of Maurer’s friends, including Martha Hoover, who exemplifies redefining “barriers to entry.” Hoover is not mentioned once but four times throughout the book.

A weathered wooden pallet sat in my garage for nearly a year before I decided to do something with it. While I’m still unsure of this splintered wood’s origin, I knew that I was tired of looking at it, and I knew where this useless wood was headed — the fire pit. Fast forward six months and a familiarlooking wooden pallet gently rests in my fire pit, still weathered and still unused. Why couldn’t I bring myself to burn this resilient eyesore? One visit to Jason Miller’s “reNEW” in historic Fortville, and you’ll never look at an old piece of wood or furniture the same way. It happened to me with a simple wooden pallet, a piece that has been reborn into a beautiful coffee mug holder. What I saw as useless, Jason saw as a blank slate, an uncarved block ready for molding. I met with Jason at his reNEW shop on Main Street to discuss his passion-turnedbusiness.

“I started reNEW in my Noblesville garage nearly four years ago. I was working as a trim carpenter and restoring historic homes. I started getting requests from my customers to do custom built-ins, furniture, refinishing, repairs, etc., and decided to make it a business.”

“The Cars for Kids Geist Chapel car show was a result of a couple people. Melissa Miles and Ken Gardner, who attend our church, are very much involved and enthusiasts in classic cars and are collectors themselves,” said pastor Luis Llerena. “We were talking about how we had already been supporters of crisis pregnancy centers through other events, and we thought that maybe it was time to create our own event. We wanted to provide a fundraiser that would raise money for those centers as well as be a fun time for our neighborhood to enjoy the fun and exciting time of being able to see classic cars.” The event will benefit Life Centers, a central Indiana organization that provides care for women facing unplanned pregnancies, as well as Geist Chapel Youth. Admission for spectators is free, and car registration for the contests costs $15. To register, visit GeistChapel.org. From 12-4 p.m., cars will be shown in the parking lot behind the church. Judging will happen at 3 p.m. with awards for the top 25 and best of show at 4 p.m. Llerena hopes to see the car show become an annual event for the church. “I really believe in the cause. I am really happy that we can benefit the great work that Life Centers has done and be able to encourage our youth ministry as well,” said Llerena. “We are estimating between 50 and 75 cars [this year]. We are hoping that it will be a great showing, that it will grow and the neighborhood will be excited about it. We will have music playing and refreshments available for purchase. People can just walk around and enjoy these really neat cars.” Geist Chapel, located in Admiral’s Point, provides a place not only for religious worship but for community leisure. It features a basketball court, tennis court and a trail in the 10-acre campus. The church welcomes everyone to the campus, even if they are not a member of the church. “I have been here over 10 years now. We really appreciate the Indiana hospitality and the wonderful people that we have met here,” said Llerena. “It is because of that that we feel so comfortable in the neighborhood. We feel that we have been welcomed as neighbors and are hoping that we can be part of a great community as well as a place where people can come to worship and just enjoy our property here, almost like a park. We enjoy having it here for people to be able to enjoy.” Llerena’s own love for classic cars influenced his excitement for the event. “I am excited to just look at the cars,” Llerena said. “I am one of those oddities that would rather have a fully restored classic car than a new car. A new car loses value every day it leaves the lot. A classic car increases in value, and there are only so many of them. They are a picture of our belief system, in that we believe in restoration of people’s lives. These cars have been restored. s the Geist Half Marathon team heads into their ninth year of planning, leadership has shifted. Mike Napariu, a sevenyear board member, has been elected to replace outgoing president Matt Troyer.
“The thing that you would like to be able to do is always keep the kids coming back,” Napariu says. “That’s the big part of this, the health and wellness of the community.”

Hundreds of lights will soon brighten the Fall Creek Bridge. Construction for the project has already begun, and by July 4, power outlets will span the southern walkway. The project contains two parts, the first being power outlets which will help facilitate events including the annual Blast on the Bridge. After, the installation of 200 lights will begin. A completion date is not set, but it is expected to be finished in the fall of 2015. The lighting has already been approved and supported by the City’s Board of Public Works and Safety (BPWS) as well as Hamilton County. The Geist
Impoundment Fund board is also seeking to install lighting on the Olio Road Bridge, a similar project to the Fall Creek Bridge but without power outlets. “The purpose of the lighting is twofold. The bridge is currently not lit at all, and we feel that this will provide path lighting that will softly illuminate the walkway and bridge,” said Geist Impoundment Fund member Jeff Lantz. “With the addition of trails connecting up to the bridge on both sides, we are looking to help drive additional pedestrian traffic into the evening hours. COME SAIL AWAY Ever wondered what the Indianapolis Sailing Club (ISC) is all about? Well, we have! The ISC is in its 61st season of sailing on Geist Reservoir. The club facilities and grounds are the finest in the Midwest, and their programs provide a packed calendar with some of the best activities of any sailing or yacht club around. With several different classes of extremely affordable memberships, the ISC has something for everyone. From senior
to junior associate memberships and memberships for boat owners and non-boat owners in all age categories, their goal is to get people out on the lake! ISC has a well-defined racing program hosting regattas ranging from local events to national championships. Many of the ISC’s Associate Members are experienced with sailing cats or other diverse boats. They are ready to crew or help new boat owners learn the ropes.
With free use of club-owned sailboats and junior and adult training sailing classes, the ISC’s strength lies in their diversity and member willingness to help all levels of sailors both on and off the water. Sitting atop Geist’s highest vantage point, the ISC’s beautiful grounds of docks, picnic area and beaches provides the ideal setting for a relaxing afternoon of fun and adventure; a true hidden gem in Indianapolis! Eager to learn more about the ISC and races, your Girls About Town boarded the Mary Morse 2, the Race Committee boat, for a beautiful afternoon of Sunday Club races. Our PRO (Principle Race Officer) was Ken McGinity, who officiated each race and was responsible for the management and conduct of all fleets racing while aboard the boat. Together with Race Committee helpers, they record the finish of each boat as they cross the finish line. Two Safety Boats run about and are in charge of setting, changing and taking down racecourse marks. They are also there to protect the sailors on the water. Once the anchors had been set, the race start line defined and the course established by the PRO, it was time for the races to start! The fleets represented were Thistle, Lightning, Snipe and Portsmouth with each category running its own race upwind to the Windward Mark, downwind to the Leeward Mark and back all over again.

The starting order for all fleets is marked by signs posted on the Race Committee boat for all to see. A one-minute warning horn was sounded as all the boats approached from the ISC, sails hoisted and ready to race! Three minute starting sequences with horns signaled by the Mary Morse 2 prepared each fleet for its start.

The Thistle Fleet was first to start the Windward-Leeward Course, which each boat must navigate around twice. Starting upwind between the Race Committee boat and the yellow buoy, each sailboat must round the Upward (Windward) Buoy (Mark), then head downwind (Leeward) towards the Leeward Mark.

For this race, we had 18 boats in participation with seven National Champions represented! On the first downward run, spinnakers (colorful additional large balloon-type sails) were hoisted, giving us a spectacular show of color and speed! Upon rounding the Leeward Buoy, the spinnakers were then lowered, and back windward they headed, tacking back and forth into the wind as they attempted to out-skill the next crew.

Watching the boats round the marks was especially exciting as seemingly all boats were trying to do this at the same time! Yes, slight collisions do occasionally happen; however, the Safety Boats are always on hand throughout the course. We watched several boats capsize, as often, the tacking and required skill heading up wind caught several crews off-guard.

While there are endless sailing opportunities, free use of club-owned sailboats, a crew for skippers that race boats Sunday and Wednesday evenings and year-round docks for keelboats, not everyone is ready for sailing. There are many activities for the entire family at the ISC. All 13 of its stunning acres are surrounded by water. Parties with live entertainment are regularly scheduled. If you’re looking to watch the races, head out on a Sunday afternoon around 1:30 p.m. for the day sailing Club Races or Wednesday evenings around 6 p.m. for Keelboat Racing. Sit back and enjoy a thrilling show on the water! Just remember to stay clear of the racing course! Be prepared for an exciting time! Also a friendly reminder to all motor boaters…boats under sail always have the right of way! The ISC is a member of the Inter-Lake Yachting Association and the Yachting Club of America. These organizations give members of the ISC privileges at clubs literally all over the world! The ISC also boasts a Cruising Club established to encourage and promote travel to national and international ports for cruising. The trips help train people to navigate and handle the problems associated with larger sailboats and help them eventually qualify as Charter Skippers and crew. Many thanks to Luke Mongin and our crew aboard Mary Morse 2 for a fun afternoon learning about the ISC and sailboat racing on Geist! We met many friendly faces who shared their stories of adventure and fun while welcoming us aboard the ISC! Next month, a new magazine will be hitting your mailboxes. Mascot Monthly, a full color sports magazine, will connect local school athletics to their communities, beginning with Hamilton Southeastern. The Mascot Monthly will reach over 16,000 people every month through direct mailing to every HSE school district home as well as free distribution at the games. "My initial reaction was that this could be unbelievable to promote HSE Athletics," said Greg Habegger, athletic director at HSE. "It’s been interesting to me in this office that people in this day and age get their news in different ways. Obviously they can go to their phones and look up Twitter or look up a website. Instantly I thought this is going to fill a void that people are looking for."

With 3,000 students, it can be easy for athletes to be lost in the crowd, especially in smaller sports. There are so many students with stories that never get shared – the female wrestler, the freshman that runs half marathons, the sophomore from Japan that plays baseball because it reminds him of his life back home. Mascot Monthly is a place for these stories, regardless of whether they are the senior football star or the freshman lacrosse newbie. "Something that we believe in as an athletic department is we never use the phrase ‘major and minor sports.’ To those athletes and to those parents and grandmas and grandpas, they’re all major, and they should be," said Jim Self, co-athletic director at HSE. "I sometimes think when you look at local newspapers, basketball and football are covered really well. But we’re really proud of all of our sports. We’ve got kids doing great things in all of our sports, and sometimes that’s hard to get that message out there, what kids are accomplishing in some of our other sports that aren’t basketball and football."
Mascot Monthly will feature student athletes, their coaches, their fans and their teams. The magazine will also function as a program at sporting events. From the publishers of the TownePost Network as well as former Indianapolis Colts Marketing Director and sports columnist Ray Compton, Mascot Monthly will share stories through print, video and social media.

I am amazed that there are still people who don’t know we have 19 sports or state-level competitors in all our sports," said Habegger.
"The Mascot is different because it will be the first monthly publication dedicated only to a high school’s sports activities. It will be the hyper local journalism that we have been doing for 11 years but put into the high school setting," said TownePost Network and Mascot Monthly publisher Tom Britt. "We can provide really good content in a very well-defined market that is not being served at all right now."
