LAWRENCE MAYOR LOOKS TOWARD A POSITIVE FUTURE
Writer / Matt Keating
Lawrence Mayor Steve Collier is still getting used to being called Mayor. To many people, he is still Steve. “It has taken some getting used to,” he said. “I still like keeping things informal when I can. That’s just the way I am, and I prefer being called Steve. I’m more
comfortable with that, but I’m adjusting to being called Mayor and appreciating the title and its responsibility.” After 33 years as a teacher, coach and administrator for Lawrence Township Schools, Collier has spent the last six months as the new Mayor of Lawrence, and it is a role he has taken on with a lot of energy and enthusiasm.
“I love Lawrence and always have,” he said in his office overlooking the entrance to Fort Harrison Park. “The number of great and talented people we have is amazing. It really is inspiring to live in a great place when you are taking on the role of mayor.” This is what Mayor Collier had to say on the following topics as he reflected on his first six months in office and his vision for Lawrence:
On his long career in education:
A Little bit
“I had quite a bit of fun as a teacher and had a great time during my last school year. I was out of the classroom in the middle of my career for nearly 12 years. I stepped into a position at Lawrence North High School that was supposed to last six months and wound up lasting for a 12-year run. I was Home School Liaison for two years, Dean of Students for three years, Athletic Director for three years and an administrative assistant for a year and half. I spent 24 years coaching football, wrestling and baseball at Lawrence North.”

“I thought I was going to be retired, but sometimes the Good Lord has a plan for you. I was retired for six months when I was approached by my friend, Paul Ricketts, to run for a counselor position. We went to high school together. Being a teacher has good name recognition, but it would still be a whole new career. I saw it as an opportunity to dive in and work in municipal government. I was later considered to be a good choice for a mayoral candidate. It was a transition to go from being semi-retired to becoming essentially a ‘head coach’ again. I spent a lot of time talking about it with my wife, Chris (a retired teacher from Harrison Hill Elementary in Lawrence), and decided it would be a rewarding challenge.”
“On his first six months in office: “I began the transition in November, and what made the first days easier was having good people helping me. By the second week in December, I had my team in place. I’ve made some great choices in the selection of my staff. I selected David Hofmann (LPD) and Dino Batalis (LFD) to lead our Public Safety. We’ve developed strong relationships between our safety personnel and the community. We want to build citizen engagement, and education is the key to bringing the citizens of Lawrence and City Hall together.
with plans to bring in more industry and a number of new companies. We want even more employees to settle in the city of Lawrence. We have bi-monthly meetings to listen to members of the Chamber of Commerce, local business owners, community organizations and members of the Common Council. To date, our ideas
“I also think Jason Fenwick and Jason Streeter have done a great job in our Controller’s Office. Julie Kukolla is my executive assistant. I have known her for years. I never thought I would be that guy who would be so busy that I needed someone to guide my daily schedule, but she has done an outstanding job as my gatekeeper. I’m impressed with Scott Salsbery’s leadership at utilities and believe his experience and institutional knowledge will pay dividends for the citizens of Lawrence. “Cam Starnes and MaryJo Rothenbush lead our Economic Development with some innovative ideas, which is very exciting. I couldn’t have better people to lead the Department of Public Works than Bill Anthony and Dave Lotts, and as always, Eric Martin is doing a great job with the Parks Department.”
His vision for Lawrence: “I want Lawrence to be recognized for all of its assets. We have an outstanding state park with Fort Harrison, beautiful terrain and homes along Fall Creek. Property tax caps will mean that we have to learn to do more with less. We have good ideas for quality economic development atGeist.com / JULY 2016 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 11
have been well received. “We are not different from any other city of our size, and we are meeting with business leaders on how they can help. We are working to get processes in place that will make it easier for new business owners to start their enterprises. We want
to rewrite many of our codes and practices to streamline the process. We have a business roundtable that is contributing ideas and plans to implement. We want to help large businesses expand and hire more employees. We would also like to see more hotels in Lawrence to host the large number of families of athletes that come to our parks for tournaments.”
On the Lawrence community following Principal Susan Jordan’s tragic death at Amy Beverland Elementary: “It was so encouraging to see all of the different entities working together after Mrs. Jordan was tragically killed protecting her students. It was inspiring to see people come together to help the teachers, students, parents and community. It says a lot about the high quality of people we have living in Lawrence.”

Writer & Photographer / Demi Lawrence
A new boutique is in South Broad Ripple just off of 54th Street called Junkyard Goddess. Thoughtfully owned by Geist resident Michelle Dolon, the boutique offers beautiful home decor that is not only environmentally friendly, but is made from reused, recycled and restyled items that would otherwise find themselves rotting in a landfill.
items or use environmentally-friendly resources to make their art. Junkyard Goddess is more than just a boutique though. Michelle wanted her store to be somewhere the community could come in, enjoy a complimentary cookie or coffee and just feel like they’re at home.

WELCOME HOME VIETNAM VETERANS PROJECT: HONORING VETERANS WITH JILL FEWELL
Writer / Kara Reibel Photography provided
Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans is an initiative created by the Department of Defense to honor those who fought for our country during the Vietnam War. 2015-2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the homecoming of our troops from this unpopular war. Their return was far from celebrated, and these recent efforts are better late than never. Marking this historic anniversary is the creation of a Commemorative Gift to be given to all seven million Vietnam veterans with 150,000 of these brave
men and women in Indiana. The gift is the first of its kind to be given to our veterans and includes a 160-page hardbound book, feature documentary and an interactive eBook. The organization of this effort extends to the states to take on local fundraising and personalization of a portion of each book, which is a gorgeous, hardback coffee table book specific to each state. Indiana’s only living Medal of Honor recipient is Sammy L. Davis who is leading the Indiana contingency, and nominated veterans’ events expert and Fishers resident Jill Fewell is our state INDY METRO / JULY 2016 / TownePost.com
coordinator for the Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans efforts. “It’s such an honor and a major undertaking,” says Jill, whose son serves in the Navy. “I’m thrilled to be helping with such a rewarding and important project.” Jill has been a longtime supporter of veterans and is the founder of VeteranEvents.org. She’s a member of the World War II Roundtable, and if there is an event for veterans in central Indiana, it’s almost guaranteed she played a role in it. “It’s all about the Veterans, not me,” says Jill, who always spells Veterans with an
“After Mom died, we all began worrying more about Dad.” —Kate Weese “Having raised 10 children in our family, our Mom and Dad were always busy and very active socially, even after we all left their home. When Mom died suddenly, we knew it would be difficult for Dad to transition into a “new normal” in an empty home. With the help of all the kids, from coast to coast, we sought a retirement community that would provide Dad with a safe and active life. We all agreed Westminster Village North was our best option and to him, a perfect new home.”
“ I couldn’t be happier here. My apartment is comfortable, the staff are wonderful, there are many things to do and I’ve met a lot of new friends.” —Don Boyle

uppercase “V” out of respect. “They come first to me!” Actor Gary Sinise, Lee Greenwood, Jon Voight, Elizabeth Dole, Paul Page and many other nationally-known celebrities support this effort. Jill’s job is to bring that focus locally to fundraise in order to provide the Commemorative Gift to all 150,000 Indiana Vietnam veterans.
“It’s about time,” says Ponytail Paul Cauley, a Vietnam veteran and President of the World War II Roundtable of the long-awaited honor for those who served in Vietnam. Cauley served with the 101st Airborne, Infantry 3rd of the 506th Currahee. Cauley just returned from a 13th reunion with his unit. reunions since 1995. “I used to not wear anything indicative of my service to my country, but I wear something daily that displays with honor that I served my country, and every day, I have people come up to me to thank me for my service." Cauley returned home from Vietnam in November of 1971 to a rude awakening. That year was marked by public displays of hostility towards the veterans who fought. This included horrific accounts of actions by U.S. soldiers in Vietnam by Senator John Kerry on Capitol Hill and anti-war protests across the country, culminating in the killings of protestors on Kent State campus. Cauley noticed sentiment was changing a couple decades ago during Desert Storm, and the U.S. was starting to support our military. That’s when he began to proudly wear evidence of his service. Indiana is an early adopter state for the Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans effort; however, many states have raised their funds and are distributing the Gift. In Mississippi, their Governor is spearheading the effort. Clearly an important effort by all states, the support for this project is unsurpassed. “We hope to experience a similar success in Indiana,” says Jill, who is hopeful that our State Legislature will create a bill allocating a portion of the necessary funding. Upcoming Vietnam veterans events include the Kokomo Healing Fields reunion in September, which is the largest of its kind. SUE ELLSPERMANN IS LEADING BY EXAMPLE Writer / Kara Reibel Photography provided
We teach what we’ve been taught. We help others in the manner that we have experienced. Sue Ellspermann shares her mentors and those who have impacted her life along with her plans for leadership of Indiana’s largest public postsecondary institution and the largest singly-accredited statewide community college system in the entire country. The new President of Ivy Tech Community College, Sue Ellspermann hails from the beautiful town of Ferdinand where she’s lived since the age of 2. One of six children, Sue and her two sisters worked in their father’s small jewelry store after school and on weekends through high school.
Ferdinand,” shares Sue, who confided only in Sister Kathy, aside from her husband, Jim, about the upcoming Lt. Governor run for office. The St. Benedict rules consist of community, prayer, hospitality and work. “Sister Kathy helps me to remain grounded.” While serving as Lt. Governor, Sue became involved with the Indiana Conference for Women. Now as a member of their Advisory Committee, Sue continues to promote the conference across the state. Conference co-founder Billie Dragoo served on an Indiana Bicentennial committee with Sue for “Big Ideas,” which not only celebrates Indiana, but it provides a strong vision looking forward to our next 100 years of statehood. The full reveal of this plan will be announced in September.
While studying industrial engineering at Purdue, Sue’s keen interest in unstructured problem-solving and strategic planning began. While working for Frito Lay in Dallas, she met Dr. Min Basadur, a thought leader in the applied creativity realm of corporate innovation. “Dr. Basadur became not only a mentor, but after leaving Frito Lay, I joined him as a consultant on a colleague level,” shares Sue. Basadur was the founder of the process she used, and it was his research that provided the foundation Sue expanded upon through her own consultation experience. While Sue was building her consultancy business, another key mentor was Kathy Kleindorfer. “Kathy was an excellent leader,” says Sue. “She emphasized the importance of under-promising and over-delivering.” Sue’s first big client was Kimball International. Jim Thyen, CEO of Kimball International, had a leadership style that Sue admired. “He always did the right thing, even if that meant lowering profits in lieu of laying off workers,” states Sue of Thyen. “He took care of people and was not overly focused on the profit motive.” Later, Thyen would serve as a friend and trusted advisor while Sue was making the decision to run for State Representative. After 20 years of consulting and strategic planning, Sue founded and served as Director of the Center for Applied Research and Economic Development at the University of Southern Indiana. Shortly after leaving this position, Sue received a call from then-Congressman Pence to be his Lt. Governor. “My spiritual director is Sister Kathy Huber (member of the Huber Winery family) and a Prioress with St. Benedict’s Monastery in TownePost.com / JULY 2016 / INDY METRO
“I am beyond excited that one of my initiatives for women was considered,” says Dragoo, who recently attended The Global Entrepreneurship Summit with President Obama and other international business leaders. “Billie is an amazing leader and role model,” says Sue of Dragoo, who also serves as CEO of RepuCare. “I feel very strongly that
the Indiana Conference for Women is an excellent opportunity for women to network and get inspired to do more.” Speaking of doing more, as President of Ivy Tech, Sue brings with her a powerful agenda designed to facilitate success for their students. As Lt. Governor, she served as Vice Chair of the Indiana Career Council, which focuses on aligning

education with workforce needs. The committee set the goal of 60 percent of our Hoosier workforce having postsecondary credentials/degrees by 2025. This means an additional one million Hoosiers need to skill up, and the bulk of those degrees will come from community colleges, such as Ivy Tech. Currently, there are 20,000 graduates with certificates and/or associate degrees from Ivy Tech Community College each year. That number needs to more than double to meet the goal. Sue intimately understands the needed flexibility with earning degrees. It took her eight years of commuting to Louisville from Evansville to complete her doctorate in industrial engineering. A high level of patience and persistence, along with family support, carried her through. The importance of increasing flexibility for degree completion, accompanied with courses that assist with skilling up our workforce such as Ivy Tech’s partnership with Eleven Fifty Academy, are a few ways Ivy Tech is working to elevate the graduation rate for their students.

“There will be one million tech jobs in 2020,” says Eleven Fifty Academy President John Qualls. “The number is staggering, and the opportunity is there for students to enroll in coding classes. The partnership with Ivy Tech opens the door for students to reach their potential and bridge this gap.” At various growth stages of Sue’s life, she has had the pleasure of being around inspiring mentors. She believes strongly in giving back and in being a mentor to others. Before leaving office as Lt. Governor, Sue left a legacy by being a part of many amazing programs. She is walking into leadership with Ivy Tech Community College with the skill set to create, perhaps, her most meaningful impact. For more information, visit ivytech.edu or in.gov/ibc. SCARLET LANE BREWERY PROSPERS WITH A WIDE VARIETY OF CRAFT BREW SELECTIONS
Writer / Matt Keating
If there were a contest for the most creative beer and ale names, Scarlet Lane Brewing Company might just take first prize. With names such as Laughing Water Australian Sprinkling Ale, Tiberius Double IPA, Dorian Stout, and Marley’s Ghost Stout, Scarlet Lane Brewing Company, 7724 Depot Street, McCordsville, Ind., is giving its growing number of patrons several cleverlymonikered brews to choose from. The beer names have been popular since they opened at the prospering brewery, which has been so successful the co-founders have established a Legion of Ale member club to enhance the Scarlet Lane experience. “The Legion membership has been a great way for people to enjoy the brewery even more,” said Scarlet Lane Co-Founder Doug Sheets. "The Legion membership includes continued education on the art of beer tasting. “We hope to educate members on what they are tasting, whether it’s good or bad,” Sheets said. “We want them to be more educated while out having a beer and not just assuming.” Legion members also participate in the development of their favorite Scarlet Lane Brewery beers by becoming a sensory panel member. They are also included in research and development teams to taste certain beers before they launch in the market. “There are a lot of people out drinking craft beer right now,” Sheets stated. “It starts with what consumers are wanting to drink and what is catching on. Citrus IPA’s are huge right now. We like getting the feedback and new ideas so we can stay ahead of the curve.” Other perks to being in the Legion include, home-brewing lessons, a membership card, an in-house mug, merchandise discounts, beer verbs and member access to VIP events. The cost for a life time membership is only $85. Both first-time visitors and long-time regulars to Scarlet Lane enjoy the brewery’s wide craft portfolio, which includes the Lenore Dry Hopped Ale, Dorian Stout variants, and Tiberius Centurian, an India pale ale. “We hope to educate members on what Seasonal offerings include Vivian Red IPA they are tasting, whether it’s good or bad” and a favorite by many, Katrina Spiced

THE PRIDE OF PITTSBURGH OPENS AT HTC Writer / Rachel Quade
I seem to be the only person in town who had not heard of the famous Primanti Bros. restaurant when it hit Hamilton Town Center this May. Apparently, if you’re from Pittsburgh, have ever been to Pittsburgh or even know how to spell Pittsburgh, you are familiar with (and most likely a fan of) Primanti Bros.! Having eaten there twice now, I can tell you the place is definitely worth the hype. First off, you walk into the restaurant, and you feel like you’re at a party. It’s a very lively atmosphere with large televisions everywhere, local pro and college pennants hanging from the ceiling, crowds of people and fun and interesting articles framed on the walls. On one side of the building is an indoor/outdoor patio. There’s also a fire pit that gets used in the evenings and when it’s cool outside. On the other side of the restaurant is a large three-sided seating area that serves as the bar and diner counter. You can watch the cooks make your piled high sandwiches behind the counter as you watch TV or talk to friends. Then…there’s the FOOD! They are famous for their two-handed huuuuge sandwiches. Our waiter suggested the Almost Famous Pastrami sandwich. When he brought it to the table, it looked like you would need a forklift to get it into your mouth! Piled on the sandwich was warm flavorful pastrami, melted provolone cheese, sweet and sour coleslaw, fresh-cut fries (yes, you read that right!) and tomatoes served on a thick piece of freshly baked Italian bread. It really was an explosion of flavor and texture. I loved it! They offer several types of sandwiches with all types of meat and various toppings. If you’re looking for a place that will serve you a fried egg on a sandwich, this is your place. To some, this may sound gluttonous…and can I say, I pity those people! Primanti Bros. offers much more than sandwiches. You’ll also enjoy their pizza (go for the Legend), burgers, salads (the steak

They also have a full bar with great daily specials. Wednesday is half price drinks day and Friday means Four-Buck Fridays on all craft beers! They even spike their ice cream shakes. Try the salted caramel pretzel shake. It’s unbelievable! Their Happy Hour menu is full of great deals. The hours are 4-7 p.m. and 10 p.m.close. (Finally a bar/restaurant that’s open late!) There are $3 tots, $2 pizza slices, $5 wings, queso, fresh cut fries, $4 stuffed pretzels, pub pickles with ranch dip and mozzarella wedges. Besides the fact that the food is great and plentiful, it’s really well priced! Finally, there’s the people! The new location employs over 100 workers, and they are full of smiles and upbeat attitudes. Every person who greets you is friendly! That probably has a lot to do with Sean Keefe, their general manager (also known as the “team coach”). He’s a big guy with positive energy, and he seems to be the perfect person to run such an establishment. His enthusiasm is infectious and endearing! When I commented on how reasonable the prices were, he replied,
“We’d rather serve someone four $10 meals It all started in the midst of the Great Depression with Joe Primanti pushing his a week than someone a $40 meal once a lunch cart along Pittsburgh’s Strip District, week.” I like that philosophy! offering reasonably priced sandwiches to the longshoremen and truckers. The Williams Writer / Mary Ryan
If you were to ask Ryan and Shauna Williams 20 years ago where they would be today, chances are they wouldn’t answer with married, raising a family together and running their own very successful businesses. Both Indiana natives and Lawrence Central/Lawrence North grads, these two moved to the Geist area 15 years ago to raise their family. Initially, Shauna was an educator and director, holding a degree in Early Childhood Education from Indiana
University, and Ryan was in retail management for the last decade. As demand would have it, both Ryan and Shauna were very skilled in other fields which led them to leave their desk jobs and start Once Upon a Party and Indiana Farm Table.
a party their guests will never forget. As a passionate advocate for literacy, Shauna not only hands out bookmarks to her guest of honor but gives books as gifts and donates books to those in need. Speaking of books, how’s this for a cool service? Shauna and her team, while not professional photographers, will take pictures at your event and put them into a photo book for you to enjoy forever. This frees up time for the parents to just enjoy watching their child have a great time!
Despite what you’re thinking, Once Upon a Party (OUAP) is not derived from a fairy tale. Shauna describes, “It’s actually literacy based. {A story they will never forget} is our tagline.” OUAP provides personalized parties to families, businesses, churches or anyone looking for OUAP is unique because of the variety atGeist.com / JULY 2016 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 41
of services they offer. Similar to previously planning activities for her students, OUAP allows her to exercise her creativity through face painting, balloon twisting, activities, décor, etc. Take face painting, for example. Shauna recalls, “I kept getting asked to do it, and even though I was once considered an artist, I said I did not offer that. After the third or so request, I could see there was a need for it. Now it’s at least 85 percent of all I do; same with balloon twisting.” A self-taught party planner, she’s contributed to the success of hundreds of parties so far and plans on thousands more. Loving the opportunity to work with children and be artistic, she’s created a party planning company that alleviates stress on the host. In response to a very busy party season this summer, Shauna recommends,
“Plan ahead and plan early. People love to hold events outdoors, so have a backup plan in case of inclement weather. That’s where we come in to keep them busy, so 15 children aren’t swinging from your banisters!” Check out onceuponapartyindy.com for more information or find them on Facebook. Shauna isn’t the only one running a successful business in Lawrence. Ryan has just launched a very successful company called Indiana Farm Table. Ryan recalls, “I got my start building DIY projects for my wife, and everyone loved what I made. I decided to try and sell a table that I made, and it sold in less than a day. The next table I made sold in less than two hours.” That’s when he realized he was onto something big and created a Facebook page. Like several entrepreneurs, the power of social media and Facebook marketing boosted his business so much that he was

able to step away from his full-time job and woodwork fulltime. It’s no secret “farm style” dining tables and furniture are wildly popular right now. Sure, you can purchase a farm table at most of the major retail stores now. What you couldn’t purchase was a handcrafted, solid wood, quality table for a fraction of the cost, until now. Shopping local is a perk too! What’s great about the rustic charm of farm house furniture? Ryan describes, “We can easily build any of our products for outdoor use. We just change the type of wood we use and the finish.” Everything he does is custom, so it’s always what the customer wants or needs at the time. children are quickly following in their eventful footsteps. Their two sons, Coleton (18) and Shaun (9), are busy bees too. Coleton will graduate from Lawrence Central this year and was recently accepted into Harvard, holding a 4.0 GPA all four years of high school. He will be following his mother’s footsteps though and is heading to IU as a Wells Scholar, receiving a full ride to study abroad. Shaun helps his Mom with great new ideas and clues her in to what kids are into and what they might like at a party. Sounds like the Williams family isn’t slowing down anytime soon! Mary Ryan has been a Geist resident for the past 28 years and enjoys spending time outdoors and around town with her husband Cory, 5-yearold daughter Chloe and 2-year-old son Callen.

Indiana and Ball State, there were no college scholarship offers for several weeks. “I was concerned but a coach at Butler told me not to worry,” recalled Quinn. “He said something would happen.” So, it did when 1976 began unfolding. Quinn was invited to Notre Dame (his dream school) and met with Irish coach Dan Devine. “It was not a good visit,” he said. “It was heartbreaking.” But good fortune came when then Purdue coach Alex Agase asked Quinn to his office in the spring. Weighing just over 200 pounds and only about 6-foot-1, Quinn bought shoes with two-inch heels and strapped on extra clothing. “I wanted to look like I was 6-4 and 240 pounds,” he said. Apparently, the makeover worked. A scholarship ensued and when he reported to training camp a team official questioned Quinn about his reduced height and weight. Quinn painfully recalls being the 11th center out of 11 centers on the team roster. But during that red-shirt season, he rose to the No. 2 position and headed into his sophomore campaign with hope. Hope appeared to become reality when the third game against Notre Dame arrived. “It was the night before the game and coach Young came to my room,” Quinn said. “He said our center had the flu and that I was going to start. I called all my family to tell them about it. But then before the game, the center showed up. I was crushed.” After his dad “talked me off the ledge,” good fortune arrived two weeks later. Quinn moved into the starting lineup at touted Ohio State. A rout ensued (Ohio State, 460) but Quinn performed admirably against an all-American Buckeye defensive tackle. However, after one of his blocks buried the talented foe, Quinn launched a brief celebration on the field. “We watch the film and coach Young had
the block rewound and rewound, showing it five times,” said Quinn. “I was scared I was in trouble for celebrating when we were losing. But coach said that he wanted to find 21 more starters who played with that kind of passion.” The Quinn era had arrived and it coincided with Purdue success. After a 5-6 mark in 1977, Quinn, Herrmann and the Boilers peeled off 9-2-1, 10-2 and 9-3 records. The football career expired after the senior season. Surgery scared off potential draft suiters, though that size issue probably would have reduced the Boiler center to being a late pick. There were no draft combines in those days and money was scarce for those who ventured into backup roles. “Sometimes I wish I would have given it a shot,” admitted Quinn. But his business career has been a solid replacement. Quinn and his commercial real estate partners have morphed from Summit Realty to Cushman and Wakefield to Colliers International. All have been rousing success stories. In the meantime, Pete and Susanne have sent all three children (Peter, Kristen and Hanna) to, of course, Purdue. Quinn has remained in the starting lineup at Purdue. This fall will be his 25th season as an analyst for the radio network and he anchors the Boilermaker Business Exchange. And he bleeds black gold when his telephone rings. The ring is the whistle from the Purdue train. “I will stand with Purdue through thick or thin,” he said. Indeed, he does. PURDUE WAS PROBABLY THE FIRST COLLEGE TEAM TO USE THE SHOTGUN. HOW DID YOU AND MARK HERRMANN HANDLE THAT RADICAL MOVE? I think we mishandled only one snap and that was when Mark hurt his hand. But it helped having a quarterback who was 6-5. WHAT IS ONE STORY THAT YOU CAN TELL US ABOUT JIM YOUNG? Jim just had his 81st birthday but he says he always wants to learn. He learned to play the piano when he was 70. He plays it very well. HOW DO YOU LIKE BROADCASTING PURDUE FOOTBALL GAMES? I love it. I live and die on the games but I have learned to get over the losses quickly. My 300th game will be the IU game. DO YOU STILL WORKOUT? I’m addicted to it. WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST WIN AT PURDUE? We were 10-2 in 1979 and beat Tennessee (27-22) in the Bluebonnet Bowl. That was special. AND WORST LOSS? We lost to Minnesota (31-14) that same year and it cost us going to the Rose Bowl.

RTV6 METEOROLOGIST TODD KLAASSEN
@ToddKlaassen /Todd Klaassen, rtv6
BROAD RIPPLE RESIDENT TODD KLAASSEN TALKS WEATHER AND WHY HE LOVES LIVING IN INDIANAPOLIS Writer / Kara Reibel Photographer / Stephanie Duncan
As a kid growing up in New Jersey, Todd Klaassen was fascinated by the weather patterns. His favorites were coastal storms and the influence of the ocean, especially in the winter. "It alway amazed me how this massive storm could produce only rain along the coast and then 10 miles inland over a foot of snow,” shares Todd. “My parents said that I was discussing details of the weather at a very early age. It was the one thing that I have always been truly interested in,” shares Todd, who vividly remembers Hurricane Gloria uprooting a large tree from his front yard when he was a kid.
Midwest than the coast where Todd grew up, are always changing. In New Jersey, the coastal storms and warm waters would influence the weather patterns along the shore. “I love going in every day. There is always something new,” says Todd. “The weather is always changing, and I love the challenges this represents.” With Todd’s strong science background, he is skilled in forecasting. The CBM, or Certified Broadcast Meteorologist, is the highest certification for a meteorologist. The CMB Seal is awarded by the American Meteorological Society. Kevin Gregory at RTV6 also holds the CBM Seal.

Once the tapes were distributed, Todd received a couple job offers. He accepted a position in Lansing, Michigan, before moving to Indianapolis in 2007.
“As a meteorologist, you can bank on the computer models if they align,” says Todd, who builds the graphics throughout the morning. As part of the RTV6 weather team, he records radio and weather hits for WIBC in addition to broadcasting across the RTV6 television network.
“My job is multi-faceted,” shares Todd. “One part meteorology, one part graphic artist, one part presenter, and now with the social media component, I find myself posting even when I am not on the clock.”
In addition to work, philanthropy has always been a priority for Todd. Soon after he began working with RTV6, Todd was drawn into supporting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society by some friends. In 2011, Todd ran a campaign for LLS Man of the Year. At that time, Todd had no family or

close ties to blood diseases. It was four years later that Todd’s father was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive blood cancer. “My parents were visiting and we were hiking in Brown County, and my dad was having a hard time keeping up, which was unusual,” recalls Todd. “He soon received the devastating diagnosis that he had AML Leukemia.” His father passed away last fall. During the recent campaigns for Man and Woman of the Year with LLS, Todd served as Master of Ceremonies for several events, including an event at The Vogue for Alissa Moody’s Woman of the Year campaign. “I met Todd through a dear friend of mine, and I instantly knew he was the perfect person to emcee the Yacht Rock Revue benefit concert I was hosting for my LLS Woman of the Year Campaign,” shares Moody. “Not only does Todd have an amazing stage presence, but he ran for Man of the Year before having a connection to leukemia or lymphoma at that time until tragically his dad was diagnosed a few years later.” When Todd isn’t working at the station or volunteering, he is seen along the Monon in Broad Ripple. “I love it here,” says Todd. “Indy is a big city with a small town feel. With the concert venues, conventions and other events and with the explosion of urban living, Indy is booming.” Kara Reibel, a freelance writer and storyteller, is a main contributor for TownePost Network’s magazines.
