Locals have developed their own friendly traditions for the Geist Half Marathon. This group of friends has their own set of “water stops” along the Geist Half route. Before this year’s race are (left to right) Jim Halsey, Joe Weisenberger, Liz Halsey, Jamie Cogan, Tim Surber, and Vicky Halsey.

Runners Turn Geist Half into 13.1 Party | By Pat Carlini The Geist Half has become a tradition for many, but for one group of runners, it is a tradition that is celebrated in the most non- traditional way. They train year round like other athletes, but when it comes to the Geist Half, they trade their water bottles for tall boys and cocktails! They even fuel up on carbs the night before, but instead of the traditional pasta, this group fuels up with tacos and margaritas. “It does sound funny,” says Jim Halsey who says the unique tradition started by trying to spend some time with his daughter, 27-year-old Liz. “I talked her into coming home to run with me, but I had to slow it down so we could be together. Next thing you know, I had a bloody mary in my hand!” Jim’s other daughter, 23-year-old Laura Halsey, has recently joined the group and wife Vicky is a runner, as well. Then about three years ago, runner Jamie Cogan was taking it slow along the race route due to a recent surgery, when she came up on the group near Marsh with tall boys in hand. “I thought it was a joke at first,” laughs Jamie, “but then they offered me one and a tradition was born!” 6

geist c o m m u n i t y

Geist_June_2013.indd 6

As the group of party runners grew, neighbors along the route started cheering them on. One group in Feather Cove offers up Mimosas and bloody marys as they come by. “They are great!” says Jamie. “They even let us in to use their bathroom!” says Jamie who now runs with her boyfriend, Tim, new to the group this year. While some may turn up their noses to the idea of drinking and racing, Jamie is quick to tell the story of how they helped a fellow runner one year. “We came across a runner that didn’t look so good and the medical stand was out of salt tablets,” says Jamie. “So, we offered up our margarita salt and we saw her cross the finish line!” The race this year went well once again for the party runners. Jamie’s best half marathon time happened at the Geist Half (2:07 in 2008) and she says her goal is to crack the 2-hour mark. While that may happen if she dropped the alcohol, Jamie and the party runners know the Geist Half just wouldn’t be as much fun – without the booze! Five years old and ashamed: How LearningRx transformed a kindergartner’s self image | Neal Moore

eather Koenig did what responsible moms do when their children are struggling in school: she went looking for a solution. Her daughter, Alexandra, was falling behind; her young mind filling with self-doubt and shame. “I was on the Internet and saw an advertisement for LearningRx,” recalled Koenig. “Alex was in kindergarten at the time and I knew something was going on. LearningRx intrigued me. It sounded like the perfect thing.”

H

At school and home, Alex was experiencing a kind of data disconnect. She would listen as her teacher or gymnastics coach rattled off instructions, but then finish only part of a task. This processing malfunction led to confusion, followed by embarrassment and “acting out” in class. “I was mixed up,” remembered seven-year-old Alex. Heather made an appointment to have Alex evaluated, and during the follow-up meeting with LearningRx Executive Director Lynne McCauley, learned that her distracted daughter had an auditory processing disorder. “It’s different than autism. She wasn’t processing verbal instructions correctly,” explained Koenig. “You go in nervous, and when you find it can be fixed it’s a huge relief.” “Many kids struggle with auditory processing issues,” explained McCauley. “The ear has to hear sounds correctly, of course, but what is the brain doing with that sound as an electrical impulse? Does it discern the difference between sounds? If not, the words rad-red-rid can all seem the same.” Inefficiencies or inaccuracies in how the brain is handling such sounds can overwhelm a child’s ability to keep up with the pace that the sounds are coming, and they zone out or shut down and miss information. “Kind of like overloading your computer at home,” said McCauley. “So, it can look like the child’s not paying attention, when really it’s information overload.”

learning how to focus in a noisy, potentially distracting environment. One of her tasks included adding columns of numbers out loud, on beat, within a certain time frame. “They walk around chirping numbers, reproducing an over-stimulated environment to helps kids learn to tune out distractions and focus on the task or information,” explained Koenig. Since completing her LearningRx brain training, and incorporating the brain training principles into school work at home, Alex’s classroom performance at Hoosier Academy has improved dramatically. “The teacher now knows she gets the full set of instructions,” said her mother. “The skills were already there, she just needed to get to them. The one thing I wanted for her was to not feel embarrassed or ashamed by ‘failure’. I didn’t want her labeled.” “There’s a lot to be said for a mother’s instinct,” offered McCauley. “If you suspect there’s a learning issue, bring your child in for an evaluation. When kids struggle day after day, and no matter what they do or try, the situation doesn’t change or improve, they start to lose motivation to keep trying.” What typically develops are confidence and self esteem issues, and a sense of dread about going to school or sitting down to homework. “By identifying the underlying cause of the learning problem, you can identify the right solution and give your child the tools to be happier and more successful at school, at home and in everyday activities like sports and extracurricular activities,” said McCauley. “Who doesn’t want that for their child?” Neal Moore has over 30 years of media and communications experience, including TV news anchoring and reporting in Indianapolis. For more information, visit www.NealMoore.com.

McCauley noted that parents come to LearningRx not for a Band-Aid, but a permanent fix. “About 80 percent of learning problems are caused by inefficiencies in how the brain actually processes information – things like memory and attention,” said McCauley. “In as little as ninety minutes, we can pinpoint the underlying cause and create a customized brain training solution that puts people on the path to easier faster learning.” Alex’s action plan included several 90-minute sessions for 12 weeks with LearningRx cognitive skills trainers,

Volunteers from Roche Diagnostics give a thumbs up on a collective effort from the whole school.

Oaklandon Elementary Gets a Lot of Trees for its Forest | Janet C. Striebel On May 10, the students, faculty, and administrators could finally see the forest through the trees on its premises at Oaklandon Elementary School of Environmental Studies. On this day, a school-wide day of activities and tree planting occurred. What started out as ten acres of open field has suddenly taken on a whole new look of a young forest. “This is our third year as a magnet program, and in that time we have made remarkable progress due to grant money and partnerships within 10

geist c o m m u n i t y

Geist_June_2013.indd 10

“Twice, we have received $10,000 grants from the Dr. Laura Hare Charitable Trust for Ecological Restoration. In addition, federal money has supported our curriculum and property development.”

This year, the NeighborWoods Program of Keeping Indiana Beautiful, Inc., and Roche Diagnostics has partnered with Oaklandon Elementary to plant close to 200 Indiana native trees. Also, another corporate sponsor, Waste Management, has demonstrated to kids the proper techniques for recycling and has agreed to provide receptacles throughout the school.

So far, the school has been able to enhance its property by adding a native prairie, large pond, rain garden, community-raised garden beds, huge greenhouse, courtyard chicken and duck habitat, and a natural playscape.

“A lot of people don’t realize how much trees benefit us,” says Getz, who was instrumental as the grant writer in getting the funding for the progressive changes at Oaklandon Elementary. “Clearly, our school is an exciting

the community,” says Laura Getz, Environmental Science teacher at Oaklandon Elementary School.

koi pond tour comes to Geist Geist resident Pat Tollini is excited to be a part of this year’s Indiana Koi and Water garden club tour! She and her husband built their pond at their Geist home on a wooded lot in 1993, revamping it over the years to include a stream, a small upper pond, and two bridges. She added Koi in 2007 and went on to complete her Master pond class at Coolponds.

The 17th annual Indiana Koi and Water Garden Club Pond Tour will be held June 22 and 23 at Geist Nursery at 9890 Mollenkopf Road from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday and 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday. The pond tour is $8 per person. Vendors will be selling koi fish, fish food, aquatic supplies, plants, and art. A jewelry raffle will take place all day Saturday. For more information, call 317-809-4817 or visit www.IKWGC.org.

Accidents Happen.

Her pond became a certified wildlife habitat this year. Pam says the biggest challenge is keeping the unwanted predators away. “We have had frogs, ducks, snakes, deer, raccoon, opossum, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, hawks, blue heron, and barred owls!” laughs Pam.

But sometimes, you deserve more than apologies.

Pam says she’s looking forward to the pond tour this year as the tours are a great source of information and new ideas. (She says her husband probably thinks she has too many ideas.) She plans to be there on hand to meet visitors during the tour.

Retired Army Special Forces Lieutenant Colonel Lance Rutallie penned a suspense novel called Hollowpoint. He is now working on the sequel - Flashpoint.

Lawrence Special Opps Author

Lance Rutallie | Kara Reibel Lance Rutallie’s resume reads like the perfect bio for a military-esque thriller novelist: 27 years of service in the Army Special Forces, retired as a Lieutenant Colonel, was both a Green Beret and an Army Ranger, a former Marion County Sheriff deputy for 32 years where he helped establish the bomb squad and the S.W.A.T. team, and former Assistant Chief of Police for Lawrence for two years. Oh, yes, and he has penned a novel, Hollowpoint (available on Amazon.com). When asking him questions about his military experience, I am greeted with “I don’t want to talk about it.” In truth, he knows that the government clearances holding this information secret have expired, but he believes firmly that any former Special Ops personnel should not reveal tactics and operative details to anyone, for it may place any service personnel currently serving our country at risk since many of these practices are still in play today. There are some graphic descriptions in Hollowpoint that may have been based upon personal memories, but I am met with the same answer, “I don’t want to talk about it.” In telling of stories from his military days, it was let known to me that Rutallie’s commanding officer was on the mission that captured and killed Che Guevara in Bolivia. No details, just that fact was given. Rutallie has served as a trained sniper and bomb technician. He served with the 7th, 8th, 10th, and 12th Special Forces groups. During his stint with the 10th, a new tradition was started involving a coin. All current and former Special Forces personnel carry one. Apparently, if in the presence of any other Special Forces soldier you are caught without it on your person, you owe that person a beer. He says that it got out of control with the coin slaps on tables and guys put holes in them to wear them with their dog tags because a commanding officer demanded to see coins in the

showers. Rutallie has his in his pocket and carries it with him always. A few years after he joined the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, the Speedway Bomber situation occurred. When a fellow Army Ranger kicked a sports satchel bag in the parking lot at Speedway High School and had his leg blown off, Rutallie was called to the scene. Rutallie recalls, “At the time, the Department didn’t have a bomb disposal unit. They knew I had military training, and I became the bomb squad. The only trouble Lawrence resident was I knew how to put them Lance Rutallie was together, not take them apart.” both a Green Beret He also didn’t know at the time and Army Ranger. the bits of bone fragments along with the bomb material at the scene were that of his comrade. In the next two weeks, he dismantled 23 potential bombs. His favorite shirt reads, “I am a bomb technician. If you see me running, try to keep up.” Ever the character, Rutallie adds, “I’ve never had to run yet.” Rutallie is currently writing his second novel. It is a sequel to the first book, Hollowpoint, named Flashpoint. The book explores a fictional nexus between the cocaine cartels, the Castro regime (now led by Raul), the Russian mafia, and the Iranian government. They are pitted against the protagonist, Cochran (main character), the FBI, Homeland Security, DEA, CIA, and Mossad in their attempt to introduce a nuclear device into the United States. So perhaps if he won’t “talk about it,” we can read all about it in his books. Rutallie and his wife, Susan, now split their time between their Geist home and their 42’ sailboat they keep in Florida. Kara Reibel, owner of Geist Pilates, has been a fitness professional for over 25 years. She is the mother of 3 kids and lives in the Geist area. june 2013

Biking Italiano-style New Road Course Cycling Event Pedals from Geist

| Neal Moore If you’re a bicycle enthusiast, mark your calendar for August 17. Indiana’s first-ever Gran Fondo wheels away at 7:00 that Saturday morning, rain or shine. Presented by the Rollfast Cycling Club of Indiana, the cross-country cycling event will offer three routes of varying length, and is designed to attract riders of all skill levels (participants must be 12 years or older). “Gran Fondo roughly translates as ‘big ride’ in Italian,” said event organizer and club founder, Matt Tanner. “Gran Fondos have been run for many years across Europe. It’s a hybrid between a long-distance recreational ride and a competitive event.” A mass launch of the anticipated 500 riders is planned, with start and finish staged on E. 56th St. at Fort Harrison in Lawrence. Riders will navigate to Fall Creek Parkway, heading north to 96th St. From there, participants will branch off to their chosen course: Piccolo, 25 miles; Medio, 60 miles; or Gran, 100 miles. “This isn’t a race – it’s a timed event,” emphasized Tanner. “While participants will have microchips to record their times, it’s intended to be a relaxed atmosphere.” So, why a Gran Fondo? “It was created for anyone who wants to ride and challenge themselves to do their best time on whichever route they pick,” explained Tanner. “Traditionally, bike clubs are expected to put on events, and we wanted something big, and that hadn’t been done before.” Event co-founder Chris Tanner added that proceeds raised will be donated to Nine13Sports, a local fitness organization targeting childhood obesity. “They’re mission is to get kids on bikes and exercising in a fun and effective way,” she said. Each course will have support stations, with the 25mile course featuring a rolling road closure for optimal safety. Organizers are seeking volunteer course marshals. “Biking is a new-found passion for me, and I’m excited about this. It’s going to be a really cool event for novice and experienced riders,” shared Chris. The Rollfast Gran

Fondo tag line is “We go?!” – a question shouted to riders at the start of most European fondos. It always prompts an enthusiastic, positive response – something the Tanners are anticipating. Online registration is now open at www.rollfastfondo. com. The cost is $75 for general riders, with a $250 VIP option available that includes a night-before party and silent auction with professional riders and other athletes expected to be on hand. Event packet pickup will be at Triton Brewery, where a post-race festival/expo is planned. Additional details are available at www.rollfastfondo.com.

It’s Your Choice! | J. Andy Murphy

Lakeshore Chiropractic celebrates 10 years! ate and Cole Blume are brothers who both chose to be chiropractors. They took this health profession one step further when they decided to open a chiropractic wellness center together. On Thursday, June 6th they will celebrate 10 years at their Geist Fall Creek location with an Open House from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with healthy competitions: a rock wall, adult tricycles races, entertainment for kids as well as healthy refreshments.

N

To say they have accomplished a lot in this health field is a bit of an understatement as they are two of less than 200 doctors that are certified chiropractic wellness practitioners (CCWP) in the world! 20

When paying a visit to their office you will discover a “WellAdjusted Wall of Fame” that documents the road back to health for practice members who are actively living an improved life since discovery of the health enhancement programs provided by Lakeshore Chiropractic: A Creating Wellness Center. “We are very fortunate to have recruited well-trained team associates, plus two interns who make up the core of our wellness practice,” said Dr. Nate Blume adding, “Our team works together to support our practice members every step of the way.” In a very short time, you will learn the foundational truths of this successful chiropractic wellness center: chemical, emotion and physical stress lead to the symptoms people associate with genetics or age, such as fatigue, diabetes, heart disease, pain, etc. The team at Lakeshore recognizes these symptoms are actually adaptations the body makes when subjected to an unhealthy environment

We know health doesn’t come in the form of a prescription. We know that healing comes from the inside out, rather than outside-in. Our approach results in positive outcomes by adjusting a person’s health beliefs and approach to caring for their body. Our detailed health assessments take into consideration all health habits and evaluates the whole person. We support an understanding that it’s replacing bad habits with lifestyle changes that are proven to work, leading a person toward optimal health, adds Dr. Cole Blume. “It’s about the understanding of why we allow these habits to take a toll on our bodies. Why do you think you need that cup of coffee or diet soda or why do you eat processed food

regularly?” said Dr. Nate. The answers are not what you think they might be when you look at it from the trained minds of these two health professionals who have developed a solid outcome for individuals who want to avoid future health issues and more than that, lead a healthier life. There’s so much more about this wellness center that you should learn about from the brother’s Blume, so if you can’t make the Open House on June 6th, phone the office for a consultation which includes a comprehensive review of goals and priorities as it relates to your personal health and well being. It will change your outlook on life and set you on a new lifestyle path. JUNE 2013

That Healing Touch | J. Andy Murphy

cience tells us that nothing is as healing as the human touch, and Charlie Marsh knows this better than most. Marsh was living in Scottsdale, Arizona, when she signed up for a wellness Massage Envy membership. Curious about the franchise after several visits, she inquired about the business side of one of her most favorite places to be. She liked what she heard and tucked it into the back of her mind. Five years later, she decided the time was right to take the next step as a possible franchise owner; but that step took an unexpected turn when she learned the company needed a regional developer in Indiana (where she grew up). She applied for the position and got the job.

S

In 2007, Marsh opened what would be the first Indiana Massage Envy location at 146th and Meridian Streets. Business was swift as the wellness concept of professional massage therapy, delivered by highly-trained massage therapists, quickly spread. The process of engaging in regular massage therapy sessions that relieve strained muscles and pain, while reducing individual stress levels in a relaxing environment, truly does a world of good for the human body as medical reports clearly document the havoc that stress plays on the overall state of our general health. Add to that injuries that can accompany an active lifestyle at any age, and you clearly see what Marsh saw when she first decided to learn more about this very successful franchise operation. “I believe that the three pillars of the Massage Envy concept – Affordable, Convenient, and Professional – contain the wellness foundation that has expanded into over 1,000 locations nationwide,” she said. “We are open seven days a week in community locations that are convenient to our members on all sides of town. All our certified massage therapists have a minimum of 500 hours of professional training in the many areas of anatomy and physiology and meet all state and local licensing requirements,” she added. Massage Envy offers an alternative to your typical day spa with customized services and affordable pricing. They invite you to see what they are all about for $49. The one-hour session includes a consultation, dressing change, and then 50 minutes of hands-on massage with multiple types of therapy available. Massage Envy offers a variety of massage types from which to choose because therapeutic needs vary not only from person to person, but also from day to day. With variations in pressure, technique, areas of focus, and desired outcome, every visit is a chance to find your

new favorite massage or to experience wonderful facials with groundbreaking Murad skincare products specially formulated for Massage Envy Spa facial treatments. All four types of facials offer therapeutic solutions designed to promote healthy skin. Massage therapy helps you relax, re-align and rejuvenate. There are many positive aspects to receiving massage therapy on an ongoing basis. With the busy lives we lead, we can all benefit from a little stress management at a nearby Massage Envy. J. Andy Murphy is a published author and works as a literary agent for regional writers. She serves as the Executive Director of the WriteStuff Writers Conferences and Events.

W

hen the house lights come up in the Zionsville Performing Arts Center (PAC) on Wednesday, June 19, the mettle of 32 young women will be tested as they vie for the 2013 crown of Miss Indiana in the preliminary round of competition. More than simply a beauty pageant, the Miss Indiana Pageant is, as co-director Frank Ricketts likes to say, “a scholarship organization in a beauty pageant format.” Zionsville and the Indianapolis area will host the week-long series of events leading up to the crowning of Miss Indiana on Saturday, June 23, and the crowning of Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen on Friday, June 22. Umbrella of Miss America Pageants The Miss Indiana Pageant falls under the umbrella of the Miss America Organization and includes the Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen, Miss Indiana, and Miss America pageants. At the state level, the Miss Indiana Pageant exists as a nonprofit, and none of the positions are paid. Volunteers staff every job. Thirty-three local pageants feed into and are licensed by the Miss Indiana Pageant. Local competitions are comprised of both closed and open pageants. According to http://www.missindianapageant. com/contestant.html, “Closed pageants are defined by groups of counties or by a university. Open pageants are available to women who meet residency requirements to compete in Indiana.” Miss Indiana State Franchise The Miss America Organization awarded Ricketts and co-director Aren Straiger the Miss Indiana franchise nine years ago. At the time, this dynamic duo were successful local co-directors of the Miss North Central Indiana Pageant and were one of four groups to apply for the franchise to the

Miss America Organization. The two did their homework and put together a proposed state board and identified the PAC as their perfect Zionsville venue for their home base. With local support from then-Zionsville School Superintendent Howard Hull, the Zionsville Lions Club, and the community, they presented an application that the Miss America Organization couldn’t resist. Ricketts credits his years of watching Burt Parks and the talented Miss America contestants as his inspiration for becoming involved in the pageant circuit. Straiger, however, is just following in her parents’ footsteps. As 40-year volunteers in the Miss America Organization, they currently function as executive producers for the Miss Indiana Pageant. “Their passion for the Miss America Organization was instilled in me at a very young age, and it is something that continues to this day,” she said. After receiving the franchise, Straiger and Ricketts set some lofty goals for the pageant:

1. Increase number of local pageants that were qualifiers for the Miss Indiana Pageant 2. Increase number of contestants 3. Increase number of people attending the pageant 4. Increase media exposure They’ve since met all those goals and then some. Under their watch, they’ve added the distinction of having Indiana’s first Miss America. In 2009, Miss Indiana, Katie Stam, won the title of Miss America in Las Vegas, Nevada. Both Straiger and Ricketts know all the hard work has been worth it. “We had ideas of how we wanted to see the state [pageant] run. We both believe that if you want something done, get busy and do it yourself,” Ricketts said.

Where’s the Money? The Miss Indiana Pageant would not be possible were it not for the help of generous sponsors. The title sponsor for the 2013 pageant is Indy Laser. Many other sponsors donate goods and services and money for the scholarship fund. “Miss America is the largest source of scholarship money for women in the world,” Ricketts said. The top ten winners all receive scholarship money. Several colleges also offer in-kind scholarships throughout Indiana, and the girls can qualify for scholarships during pageant week by winning awards in several other categories including academic, community service, and talent, just to name a few. “It’s gratifying to see these young women grow whether or not they win a title,” Ricketts said. Platform: Children’s Miracle Network Each young woman who enters the Miss Indiana contest must have a community service platform to promote if she is the winner. “The job of Miss Indiana is not just the Miss America Pageant,” Ricketts said. It’s a job that includes promoting her platform with appearances throughout the entire year. Straiger added, “Our contestants learn community involvement and become passionate about their personal platforms. They continue to develop their talents and strive to live healthy and active lifestyles,” said Straiger. Part of participating in the program includes promoting the Children’s Miracle Network, which is the platform of the Miss America Organization. In lieu of an entrance fee, the contestants to the Miss Indiana Pageant must raise money for this charity, which is then donated to a local hospital in the Children’s Miracle network. In Indiana, Riley Hospital for Children receives the donations. Consequently, the money raised from each state pageant stays in and benefits local children. june 2013

Pageant Details With the pageant date rapidly approaching, each young woman is busy preparing for her areas of competition. All contestants must compete in five areas: talent, interview (a private, 10-minute interview with the panel of five judges), onstage questions, evening gown, and swimsuit. Preliminary competition is held on Wednesday and Thursday of pageant week, and the top ten move on to final competition and the crowning of the winner which, this year, will be held on Saturday, June 23. Ticketed events and the entire schedule can be found at http://missindianapageant. com/competition.html. Overall, Ricketts stresses the importance of each contestant being herself. “We don’t want them to fit a mold; we want them to be individuals,” he said. “I don’t care if you’re a size 2 or a 20. You need to be in the best shape you can be; it’s not a size.” As we anticipate the crowning of Miss Indiana 2013 from the field of accomplished contestants, Ricketts emphasizes that as far as Miss Indiana is concerned, the true definition of beauty is “being talented, confident, articulate, and involved in community.”

Geist Water Quality & You: Make a Difference!

This is an example of a rain garden installed at Fort Harrison State Park Visitor Center. | Janet C. Striebel et’s face it. The water quality of Geist affects all of us. The property values of our homes and small businesses in the entire Geist community are undeniably tied to the quality and reputation of this reservoir. As one of the city’s three main sources of drinking water, the waterquality issues we deal with today are not just a few people’s problems or those who live directly on Geist, but rather everyone who lives in this community.

L

Do you know where rain water goes once it runs off your roof, through your downspouts and out of your yard? Much of it ends up in the storm drain which dumps into the nearest stream, river, pond, or lake without being filtered or treated. If you live along Geist, your storm water runoff probably runs directly into the reservoir. This is a problem because the water is carrying a lot of pollutants with it. 32

“Water is a precious resource and one of our most basic needs. It has no end or beginning, rather a cycle, and whatever it collects along its path, it distributes,” says Leslie White, Fall Creek Watershed Partnership coordinator. “What each of us does to protect, conserve, or contaminate water upstream, downstream, and around the globe eventually comes full circle to affect us all. There is really just ‘one water.’ Take advantage of the Soil and Water Conservation Districts. We offer educational, technical, and some financial assistance to help you put projects in place for clean water, healthy soil, and natural resources.” According to the EPA, fresh water is very limited – water in lakes, streams, rivers, and reservoirs makes up less than 0.01 percent of the Earth’s water. Fortunately, there are several funding opportunities available to help you with projects on your property that can reduce or eliminate pollution and make Geist Reservoir a healthier, safer body of water for everyone. We all want clean water —

for drinking, recreational use, and wildlife. Read on to do your part and make a difference.

Current Threat to Clean Water

Due to the construction of homes, roads, and buildings, our vegetation is depleted by large impervious surfaces (hard surfaces that water cannot penetrate, like rooftops and parking lots.) The problem that occurs is that when it rains, the lack of natural vegetated areas reduces our capacity to slow the water down as it gushes down gutters and into storm drains. As a result, rain is unable to seep into the soil and replenish the groundwater supplies. Consequently, the storm water runoff gradually picks up pollutants from lawn fertilizers, and chemicals, motor oil, pet waste, salt, litter, and soil before flowing into rivers, lakes, and streams. Such pollutants are transported by wind or by particles attached to raindrops that travel downstream and collect in the water supply.

Pollutants and Solutions

“The good news is that we can all make a few small changes in the way we manage our properties to help stop this water pollution and create a healthier reservoir,” says Shaena Reinhart of the Upper White River Watershed Alliance. “Our hope is that Geist-area residents will be excited to do their part and make a difference for water quality.” In addition to reducing local water pollution, the following conservation practices can help reduce maintenance for the landowner while increasing the value of the given property: • Filter strips or buffers (native vegetation planted along bodies of water) • Vegetative streambank stabilization (stopping erosion using natural materials and plants) • Rain gardens (flowerbeds that are planted in a slight depression and capture rain water runoff from rooftops, patios, driveways, or sidewalks) • Bioswales (similar to rain gardens but linear in shape) • Native tree/shrub plantings (planting native species which provide more of an environmental benefit than typical ornamental species) • Green roofs (installing plants on rooftops) • Pervious pavers (concrete or individual pavers that have pore space through which water can infiltrate) • Rain barrels (barrels or other systems to capture and store rain water) • Wildlife habitat plantings (butterfly gardens, prairie plantings) • Phosphorous-free lawn fertilizers (fertilizers without the nutrient phosphorous which most established lawns don’t need anyway) Remember, the first number on the

bag of fertilizer represents Nitrogen, the second, Phosphorous, the third, Potash. You always want the middle number to be “0” such as 28-0-3. “Some people might ask, ‘Why do I need to use phosphorous-free fertilizer?’” says Scott Rodgers, vice president and founding board member of Geist Lake Coalition. “Geist represents two main resources. First it’s a metropolitan drinking-water reservoir, and second, it’s a public recreational asset for boating, swimming, and fishing. Phosphorous and sedimentation from erosion plus other nutrients clearly adds to our algae problems in Geist. The health of this lake not only impacts community property values but also affects nearby businesses and a whole array of stakeholders.” Many residents may be tempted to tackle issues in their yards or off their docks using chemicals that may not be safe for the environment. Rodgers reminds us, “With an increased nuisance and concern of aquatic invasive plants like water milfoil, we need to be smart and careful about how we deal with treating these plants in a drinking-water reservoir and maintaining balance.” “While pouring chemicals near your docks and shoreline may be a short-term fix, it’s a long-term effect that is not a good recipe for a refreshing and healthy glass of water, says Brian Hall, president and founding board member of Geist Lake Coalition. “Applying unknown types and quantities of chemicals into our water supply without the proper permits is bad practice at its worst!” If you are unsure about the safety and impact of a particular product, you should visit www.in.gov/dnr to learn more or contact any of the people noted at the bottom of this article.

Cost-Share Funding Available Now to Area Residents Have you ever thought of creating a wildflower garden to attract birds, butterflies, and other beneficial insects? Or, how about a rain garden to capture storm water from your roof, driveway, or sidewalks? Could your neighborhood retention pond or shoreline property use a shoreline stabilization to reduce erosion and sedimentation? Maybe you have always wanted to reduce lawn-care maintenance by installing a native wildlife habitat. Actually, you may be entitled to partial funding for any of these types of conservation projects.

Below are three cost-share programs available to help you convert your ideas into practical use on your property. june 2013

Event organizers announced that the Geist Triathlon at the Indianapolis Sailing Club, originally scheduled for June 22, will now be held on Saturday, July 27 at 8 a.m. After discussion with Town of Fishers officials, event organizers and town staff grew concerned for public and participant safety given two other large July 4th community events already scheduled within two weeks of the original date.

do; pacing I cannot do. I think having thousands of people around me also running at a steady pace definitely helped! There were kids running through my legs and couples who I swore were training for the Amazing Race, but there were also sweatband-clad older ladies who brought their A-game, which was great. I loved seeing all the families who were running together. You could tell they were at different levels in their running ability, which I found to be one of my favorite things about the 5K: anyone and everyone could do it! The weather was perfect for a race: overcast and 66 degrees, which was cool but not cold, so I could still dress light. I was also sporting a backpack because I missed the gear check: I will never miss that again! Believe it or not, it really impacted my running; but I got over it.

Alyssa Sander (left) & Amber Silva (right) celebrating at the finish line.

Diary of a First Time 5Ker | Alyssa Sander My heart was racing and my palms were sweaty as I walked up to the start line. Completely prepared, focused, and driven, I was ready to win: to be the fastest Geist 5K runner! I was going to win it all and set another PR. Except, that’s not really what happened at all. Quite the opposite really! Mostly because I kind of hate running and decided to just “wing it.” When Tom Britt, whom I work for and who is the Executive Director of the Geist Half Marathon & 5K, would talk about the event, my first thought was, yeah, that will be cool to watch! And then a week before the race, I decided to just sign up. I’ve never run a race before and have really never run over three miles, so I wasn’t sure how I was going to pull it off, but I wanted to. So I started eating healthier, jogging around my neighborhood, and acting like I knew what I was doing: like I ran races all the time. I also invited one of my closest friends, Amber, to run with me. I knew that if there was anyone out there who would yell at, I mean encourage, me it would be her. She was a tough go-getter who wouldn’t let walking be an option, and that’s exactly who I wanted by my side. And so we were off. Not like a horse race: more like a turtle race. Slow and steady, which is hard because sprinting I can 40

geist c o m m u n i t y

Geist_June_2013.indd 40

Something else I got over were the hills. Amber and I charged a big one right before mile two, and I’ll admit I had to catch my breath afterwards. I had heard that the course was a bit challenging, but I didn’t fully realize how hard it was to climb the hills along with fighting the urge to just walk. At one point I even told Amber that I was never running again!

c

Whether it was high-fiving kids who were cheering us on, admiring the beautiful surroundings, or singing “Manifesto” by City Harmonic with Amber while running, there were so many moments when I forgot I was even running. The encouragement from those around me, who were all running for different reasons but a great cause, made me feel like I was a part of something. Thousands of people came together from the community and beyond, and it was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. Sure, I only ran for 33 minutes, a PR (considering I’ve never run before), but in that time I felt challenged, embraced, and inspired! And as Amber and I sprinted through the finish line, arms waving around like Rocky, I realized I had conquered more than just running a 5K. My heart was racing and my palms were sweaty, but only because I failed to look at the road closures map I designed and had to take multiple detours to get to the race, which I almost missed. I wasn’t ready to win and wasn’t prepared at all, because well, it was my first race. I wore my hiking shoes if that tells you anything. But I will tell you this: I no longer hate running or will laugh at the idea of a marathon. I found it to be invigorating, and am already looking for other races I can run this year. And, I feel closer to this amazing community. I don’t regret my decision one bit. If there’s ever something you don’t think you can do, maybe just “wing it!” You’ll never know until you try. High Point Market Puts the Accent on Making Statements color, charm, even a little comedy. Make your room make you smile.

| Donna Marino What better way to make a design statement in a room than with a fabulous accent piece? The spring’s home furnishings market at High Point, N.C. showed off a multitude of statementmaking pieces that can give a room a distinctive personal look—special character. Tables, case goods and accent chairs are great ways to add pizzazz to a room. Drexel Heritage, known much for its classic style, showed a rope wrapped table that makes a wonderful statement about organic modernism. And, they showed an ivory curvy Hollywood glam bureau that would dress up any dressing area. Is it classic or contemporary? You decide.

Rugs, always a great accent piece to add color and character, can make another statement as well. Reclaimed materials, or as Uttermost calls them ‘rescued materials,’ are used in a new line of area rugs that feature rescued denim and leather. The reclaimed materials are woven with natural materials including wool, jute and cotton.

These funky chairs were spotted in the Lazar showroom at High Point.

Accent chairs can always add excitement to a room. Funky styles and patterns seemed to be everywhere at market. The message: Be bold. Bring on a fun chair to give your room

The denim colors are blue, black and khaki. The leather comes in tan, brown and black. They are easy to coordinate with what you already have and you can tell your guests you have decorated with materials that otherwise would have been discarded.

“American-made” was an even more prominent theme at this spring’s market. India-based Surya, known mostly for its rugs, was promoting itself as “Your complete source for

New Indianapolis Sailing Club Commodore Paul Kirkpatrick Caught in a Clubhouse Debate

The 13-acre site of the Indianapolis Sailing Club features a dated clubhouse which has become the topic of discussion with members. | Neal Moore

O

ne of Geist Reservoir’s venerable institutions finds itself in a crosswind. The Indianapolis Sailing Club (ISC) is engaged in discussions about the future of its clubhouse. The passage of time, and changing expectations about best uses for the structure, have taken a toll. Thus, at least three proposals for re-inventing the clubhouse are under consideration: Update the 1950s era facility and build an addition to the existing structure. Replace the clubhouse with a new building. Funnel the club’s money and energy toward developing a new generation of sailors and club members. “You get 300 opinions on what we should do,” said ISC Commodore Paul Kirkpatrick. A key argument for either new construction or a comprehensive updating is the need to bring the facility up to modern standards. For example, the clubhouse currently has no air conditioning. Construction proponents say such improvements would, among other advantages, increase the facility’s usage for business meetings and the like. “Now, the clubhouse is basically unused Monday through Friday,” said Kirkpatrick. “”We are one of Indy’s best-kept secrets, and when trying to recruit new members, a modern-day facility would be helpful.” Founded in 1955, the Indianapolis Sailing Club (ISC) currently has about 300 family members – 200 of which

are boat owners who use the 13-acre site overlooking the lake as home base for recreational and race sailing. In addition to the many social activities, adult and youth sailing lessons are offered at the club, and the occasional presence of groups of children is part of the argument for an expansion design that would include a walk-out basement. “In the event of storms, kids and adults need an appropriate shelter,” Kirkpatrick said. A different faction would prefer the club use funds to buy more kid boats for junior sailing programs, with an eye toward growing future membership. “That’s a good argument too – I respect others opinions,” said Kirkpatrick. “[Discussion] got pretty heated around here the first of the year. My approach has been to let things settle down. We’re doing a membership survey to help with the decision.” The club is in the enviable position of carrying no debt, and has a consistent income stream from AT&T’s lease of a small portion of land where a cellphone tower now stands. With interest rates low and money in bank, Kirkpatrick said conditions are right for doing something. “One idea is to keep the building’s look and just make it bigger,” he said. “Others say scrap it and build a million-dollar facility.” However, the thought of a mortgage scares some of the membership. One thing is certain. The first annual Geist Triathlon (July 27) will utilize ISC to stage the swimming leg of the triathlon as participants take to the water in the ISC cove. Information about the Geist Triathlon is available at geisttri.com. Sailing Club info is at indianapolissailing.org. june 2013

Brian Hall, President and Founding Board Member of the Geist Lake Coalition, holds up some algae growing near the Geist Marina docks.

5/29/2013 6:29:48 PM

Geist Lake Coalition to Battle Out-of-Control Vegetation in Geist Reservoir | Janet C. Striebel Many Geist residents are wondering how the excessive weed growth within Geist can be controlled. You may have thought about the possibility of using chemicals, either aquatic herbicides or algaecides, to control the weeds. But first there are some questions worth addressing: Do you know whether the use of chemicals in this body of water will be safe to you and to the environment; are you using approved chemicals; have you obtained a permit? Although the weeds are invasive and annoying, the ideal situation is to maintain some native species of vegetation to provide habitat, shelter, and oxygen for fish and other organisms, plus positively provide nutrient competition for the blue-green algae. After all, these plants provide the base of the aquatic food chain. What’s more, the larger plants in a body of water also stabilize the sediments that would otherwise be erodible.

activity,” says Brian Hall, President & Founding Board Member of Geist Lake Coalition. He adds, “Removing heavy sediment and nutrient loads that are exacerbating the situation by literally feeding the problem, is also of concern. Dredging in key areas of the reservoir is currently under study and in partnership with key stakeholders; a dredging project is likely in the near future.” If you insist on removing the milfoil manually, you should pull up by the roots, keeping the plant intact as you dispose of it. The idea is to avoid breaking off pieces that can float off and reseed elsewhere. Excessive weed control and improper use of herbicides can destroy valuable habitat by releasing nutrients into the water, which in turn can stimulate the growth of algal blooms (rapid accumulation of microscopic algae). These algal blooms will cause water to turn an unsightly green. Once they die off or “crash” they can deplete the water of oxygen and cause a subsequent fish kill. Worse yet is when algal blooms become toxic posing a threat to our health. Algae can be controlled using copper compounds, particularly copper sulfate, which is probably the most widely used of the algaecides or herbicides in bodies of water. Herbicides must be used wisely in the environment to prevent adverse effects to the organisms that live in it. Typically Citizens Water will treat with an algaecide to avoid foul taste and smell in our water supply as a result of high algae growth. However, they don’t normally treat for the invasive Eurasian milfoil. If you are unsure about the safety and impact of a particular product, you should visit www.in.gov/dnr to learn more.

Unfortunately, there are situations in which invasive species of aquatic plants, such as Eurasian milfoil can gain a foothold in a body of water. These plants continue to grow and form a canopy over the surface of the water. This canopy of vegetation will eventually extend, shade out, and kill the native species that are growing below it. “Ultimately the Eurasian milfoil can take over a body of water up to 10’ deep, making it challenging to swim, fish or conduct just about any other recreational Viewing various coves and shorelines on Google Maps reveals the algae problem around Geist Reservoir, like this one in Diamond Pointe. j u n e 2 0 1 3 | atGeist.com 49 Geist_June_2013.indd 49

5/29/2013 6:52:07 PM

GEIST LAKE COALITION KICKS OFF PILOT PROGRAM TO REDUCE EURASIAN MILFOIL The best remedy for algal blooms is a worthy watershed management program. Fortunately, the Geist Lake Coalition along with Geist/Fall Creek Watershed Alliance has invested heavily in a watershed management plan. Hall explains, “We are currently studying and implementing programs that were a result of this study and we need your help as we get these programs off the ground. Whether it’s time, talent or treasure, we need your help!” Invasive species such as Eurasian milfoil should be controlled when new patches of growth appear in the water. Established infestations should also be managed. This is where the Geist Lake Coalition has focused its efforts, and where residents and homeowners associations have turned their attention. Herbicides can be used selectively to remove milfoil from stands of native aquatic plant species, leaving the native species to function in their normal roles as producers of habitat, shelter, and oxygen. The Geist Lake Coalition (GLC) has applied for and successfully received a L.A.R.E. (Lake River Enhancement) grant for a pilot program to treat Eurasian Milfoil on Geist. The biggest challenge for this organization is trying to

match federal dollars with a dollar to dollar match from the GLC. “We need your help to fund our match and the ability to fund our own efforts beyond the grant money available through LARE,” says Hall. “The more funds we can collect from homeowners and associations the more areas we can treat within the reservoir. The contributions you have consistently made toward our fireworks display have mostly funded our programs to date but with the major effort of late we have quickly outstripped those funds! Whether it’s financial support for our annual 4th of July celebration or water quality, it’s the same set of pockets. Please consider a tax deductible donation (we are a 501c3) to the Geist Lake Coalition.” If you or your neighborhood would like to participate, please contact Brian Hall (GeistCoalition@aol.com).

on that bridge,” she enthused.

They came. They saw. They conquered (most of them, anyway). Saturday, May 18, marked the sixth opportunity for thousands of Geist-area runners and walkers to take on the St. Vincent Geist Half Marathon and 5K. And this year, thanks to Mother Nature, those competitors with faster times had a definite advantage, finishing ahead of the rain showers that “back-of-the-packers” endured. Happily, no one seemed particularly bothered by the soggy conditions.

Tom Britt, executive director, said 2013’s race marked the first year using a new event management company, Planet Adventure, and a first with rain. “We’ve always avoided the spring rains until this year. It started drizzling around 9:00 am, two hours into the half marathon, and stayed constant until the last shuttle left at noon,” said Britt. “But, people were troopers and still had a great time.”

More than 6,300 runners registered for the two races, down slightly from last year, likely due to the cold spring and poor weather affecting training schedules. It was the first time rain dampened the event, with drizzle starting about two hours after the start of the half marathon. Feather Cove resident Megan Zimmer, who has participated in every Geist Half, commented that the mist actually helped cool her off, adding that it’s her favorite race (having also run the Indy 500 Mini Marathon just two weeks ago.) “First of all, it marks the beginning of summer for me; but I love finishing 54 geist c o m m u n i t y n e w s l e t t e r | j u n e 2 0 1 3 Geist_June_2013.indd 54

Funds generated by the Geist Half are used to support local schools. “It has totaled more than $236,000 over the past five years, with funding going primarily to Hamilton Southeastern and Lawrence Township schools,” explained Britt. Young Colin and Shalyn Hussey, and their friend, Livy, ran the 5K, explaining that it’s a family tradition, with Livy noting, “but you have to be at least in 3rd grade!” In the near future, dad’s plan is to move the kids up to running the full 13.1 half marathon. They were a small group among the hundreds of kids who participated in the 5K. Several

finishers commented that it added a different and fun dimension to the run, since many other 5K events have a separate race for kids. 5K-ers Rock Ritter and son, Grant, each logged times with which they were happy. They ran with Kelly Brown and her mom, Jen. Rock’s wife, Colette, was busily taking photos from the sidelines. “It’s a fun event, and a really great way to get out there with your family,“ commented Rock, as they headed off to a celebratory breakfast. “Runners love this race,” Britt explained. “In our surveys, people love our water stop volunteers, who are very encouraging and add a lot of excitement. And, our scenery is second to none. Where else can you see beautiful homes, start on a bridge overlooking the water, and end at a marina full of boats? The answer is ‘nowhere but Geist,’” he added. Britt noted that every year improvements are incorporated into the event. Anyone interested in volunteering for the newly-organized Geist Half Advocate group or board should contact Tom Britt at info@geisthalf.com. Race results are available for all participants at www.geistresults.com.

Future 500?

Geist resident races at the Speedway

Former St. Simon the Apostle School and Cathedral graduate Jimmy Simpson with his mother Debra Burns at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway prior to the Indy Lights race. | Neal G Moore Geist resident Jimmy Simpson leads a relatively normal suburban life. He lives with his family in Admirals Sound. He attended St. Simon the Apostle School and Cathedral High School, and currently is a junior majoring in communications at Purdue University. Like most kids his age, Jimmy loves driving cars. But Jimmy drives cars at 200 miles per hour – legally. Last month, he raced an Indy Lights open-wheel car in the Firestone Freedom 100 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Jimmy Simpson is a race car driver. He is 20 years old. 58

“It’s been my dream since I was a kid. It’s what I’m good at,” explained Simpson. “My dream is to reach the Indy 500.” Simpson is following a path familiar to many Indycar drivers. At age five, he started racing quarter-midgets at local fairgrounds. At age 11, he moved up to karting, where he won several championships. Simpson attended the Skip Barber Racing School, and was named “rookie of the race” at an event at Sebring. Midgets, sprint cars, Formula Atlantic, victories – all are on his resume. And now, Indy Lights. On May 24, for one day, one race – Simpson found himself in an Indy Lights car. “It’s like the Triple A baseball of Indycar,” he said. “Indy 500 drivers Conor Daly and Josef

Newgarden are former Indy Lights drivers.” Make no mistake – this was a big-time opportunity. “I’ve looked forward to racing at the Speedway my whole life. All the drivers view Indy’s track as the best,” said Simpson. “It was a real dream come true.” With straightaway speeds at 200 MPH, running Indy is, well, dangerous. Simpson, however, appeared fearless. “No, it’s not scary. You don’t think about crashing. You’re focused on what you’re doing,” he explained. “The first laps at Indy are like ‘whoa,’ but then it’s second nature. Running 160 in a midget car is the scariest thing you’ll ever do,” he noted. Jimmy took seventh place in the 40-lap Indy Lights race – not the finish he’d hoped for, but a worthwhile effort. “Just being there was a success in itself,” he offered. Simpson would like to continue on the Indy Lights circuit, but needs sponsors to pay the freight. Auto-racing is an expensive undertaking. For instance, that appearance at IMS cost about $50,000. The rest of this year’s Indy Lights circuit? A cool $400,000. His mother, Debra Burns, is hoping some entity will come forward with sponsorship. Both understand that money makes the wheels turn, not the engine. “Indy Lights is an important step toward his ultimate goal of Indycar and racing in the Indy 500,” she explained. “So, we’d welcome any kind of sponsorship.” Simpson was just a little kid when he attended his first 500. “I remember Eddie Cheever winning, and then meeting him,” he said. And, he said former Indycar driver Mark Dismore has been a real mentor for him. Indy, you see, is in his blood, and with some luck (and funding), Simpson just might find himself attempting to qualify for next year’s Indy 500.

“ If someone in my family needs surgery, this is where I’ll go.” Donna Hunley

Manager, Medical/Surgical Department

“At St.Vincent Fishers Hospital, we have an atmosphere where patients are made to feel more comfortable for their medical or surgical needs,” said Donna. “Beyond having skilled nurses, physicians, surgeons and support staff 24/7, the new hospital is bright and beautiful. You feel more like you’re in a hotel. And that’s important, because your environment plays a big role in healing.”

invest in your nest Masthead Home Makeover The black appliances were fairly new, so Decker kept those for his black and white kitchen. The rest of the home had a fairly open floor pattern making it easy to work with. Decker says his company does flooring, cabinets and painting so, once they got to the decorating, he called CC Homes in Carmel for a little help. The result is a transitional contemporaty style with a palette of grays, blacks and whites for a cool, clean look. Decker says his favorite room is the master with a bathroom featuring marble floors and a curbless shower for easy accessibility. another favorite spot is his screened in porch with steps leading down to a sitting area and firepit.

| Pat Carlini As the owner of the affordable companies, David Decker has seen a lot of renovations over the years. But, as David will tell you, its nothing like doing your own! when Decker purchased his Geist home, it was bank- owned and had been empty for five years. He knew he would have to invest in his new nest to make this home attractive and livable once again!

The lower level is just as light and bright as the main floor with windows offering views of the woods and the lake nearby. Decker says he is comfortable in his newly decorated home and proud to call his Geist digs, home sweet home! Pat Carlini is an experienced television/radio personality associated with NBC in Indianapolis and the syndicated Bob & Tom Show. She can be contacted at www.patcarlini.com.

So Decker put his home renovation expertise to work and dove into his new project. The roof needed to be replaced and they painted the exterior of the home. Then, he gutted the inside leaving only the exposed brick firefplaces on the main and lower levels. “there was a large built in aquarium in the kitchen that we removed to make way for some new white cabinets, granite countertops and a great looking backsplash,” says David. 70

Geist Teen Reeling from Bass Tourney Win

| Pat Carlini

When 13-year-old Griffin Fernandes headed out on Geist Reservoir last month for the Indiana Bass Federation Youth Tournament, he had no idea he would be reeling in some big awards! Griffin – a 7th grader at Hamilton Southeastern Junior High – won the first Indiana Bass Federation Youth Tournament in his age division held on Geist, April 20. He broke a youth record with five qualifying fish weighing in at 23.43 pounds. Then, his big bass weighed in at hefty 7.72 pounds! “It was exciting!” says Griffin. “When they announced the weight of the fish, I thought I did well but couldn’t believe I won! The young fisherman has been fishing since he was 3 years old and usually packs a few poles and a variety of lures when he heads out on the water. Griffin was one of about 40 boys from Fishers and around the state who participated in the tournament. It was a great day on Geist and they want to thank all their volunteer boat captains, as well! Griffin is now fired up for future fishing events and plans to be at Lake Shafer in June, Lake Tippecanoe in July, and the big “Fish-Off” in September. Congratulations, Griffin! 76
