Old-fashioned service at the soda fountain being served up by (left to right) Tori, Lenzy, Crystal and Andrew.
Indulge in Fortville’s New Old Splurge Photos and Story by Pat Carlini “Indulge” is a new place to, well, indulge yourself! Everybody needs to indulge every now and then, and when you do why shouldn’t it involve some creamy, cold ice cream with a cherry on top…in surroundings that make you smile. That’s exactly what you will find at the newly-opened “Indulge” on Main Street in Fortville. Formerly a five-and-dime store where you could find about anything – along with a soda fountain – back in the ’40’s, and another shopping spot called Phoebe’s Corner in the ’80’s, the space at 10 East Main Street is alive again with customers for a new place called “Indulge” – a spot for ice cream, candy, and the arts, too. 8

“We opened it as a soda fountain during some holiday festivities and it was such a hit, we decided to open it up as an ice cream parlor again!” says owner and Fortville resident Lenzy Hendrix. “It’s been three weeks now and we have gone through thousands of scoops of ice cream!” Hendrix is an architect at his day job and was once an “imagineer” for Walt Disney in California. To this day, he enjoys working on themed architecture in casinos and restaurants. So with his Disney and architecture backround, along with a love of theatre, Hendrix has managed to “build” an ice cream parlor that looks like no other! “We call it where Lady Gaga meets Willy Wonka,” laughs Hendrix. “It’s pink zebra couches, paper-like chandeliers, and an old-fashioned soda bar made from repurposed wood. It’s bins of candy, including everything from skittles to fine chocolates Hendrix finds at a store in Anderson. Tables are

set up in the back of the store for artists to display and sell their wares. “My vision is to have this place be the Mass. Ave. of the northeast side of Indy,” says Hendrix who is a big supporter of the arts, as well. And yes, there is ice cream and plenty of it. There are milkshakes, sundaes, floats, malts, and a favorite around town – marshmallow cokes. “There’s an art to topping the coke with marshmallow,“ says Hendrix. “You have to be careful…if you trap the gases, it can blow up on you! The staff of Tori, Crystal, and Andrew seem to all know how to make the sundaes and floats and they also serve up a lot of personality which helps keep customers coming back.
Indulge’s iconic soda fountain.
“Indulge” is a fun place to indulge yourself with a sweet treat or just hang out in the comfortable chairs and couches, do some work with wifi at a table, and soon enough be able to shop for some great artwork.

• 1 cup diced prosciutto • 6 tbsp. shredded Parmesan • 1 lb farfalla pasta (bow tie shape) • 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves ( julienne cut) • 1 cup cherry heirloom tomatoes cut in half • Lemon zest • Gourmet option: goat cheese pearls and toasted pine nuts Bring a large pot of lightly-salted water to a boil. Add pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, until al dente, and drain. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large saucepan over mediumhigh heat and cook the shallot for 4 minutes, until tender. Mix in the garlic and continue cooking 2 minutes, until shallot and garlic start to get golden brown. Set aside shallot and garlic. Return the shallot and garlic to the saucepan and stir in the white wine. Cook until reduced to 1 tablespoon. Mix in the chicken stock, lemon juice, and lemon zest. Reduce heat to medium and continue cooking 10 minutes, until reduced to about 3/4 cup. Mix the heirloom tomatoes and peas into the saucepan and cook just until heated through. Business Spotlight
Geist F.C. Tucker Co.
Connected to the Community for Over 20 Years
By J. Andy Murphy 1986 was the era of double digit interest rates. The F.C. Tucker Company made a leap of faith. They broke ground with the first and only free standing real estate office in Geist. You may recognize the original structure if you drive down Sargent Road. The “pods,” as they were affectionately called, still stand on top of their stilts along the side of the road. In 1986, our Geist community was the middle of nowhere with only a few homes. F.C. Tucker saw beyond the bean fields and knew this was going to be a great area to raise families. The company felt so strongly about this commitment that 12

in 1991, F.C. Tucker built the familiar two-story red brick building located at 79th and Fall Creek Road. This office is now home to over 40 agents along with their managing brokers, Joe Dowd and Kristi Snider. The agents, many of who have been there for over 20 years, will tell you that their office feels like home. “We are a team of people who live in the Geist community. We believe in and love the uniqueness of our little corner of the world,” said Dowd. This busy real estate office is filled with licensed realtors who also believe in giving back and show it through their own team involvement in the community. If you mention the Geist Half Marathon, you will quickly hear stories about the water stop that several agents worked
| J u n e 2 0 1 2
The first offices for the Geist F.C. Tucker Co. agents in 1986 was located at their current location in these “pods” as shown here. In 1991, these pods were moved to Sargent Road and a new red brick building was built which is home to 40 agents today. at this year. They also feel strongly about their schools, volunteering and supporting many of the public, private and parochial schools in the Geist area. St. Mary’s Center, United Way, Realtor Foundation and Teacher’s Treasures are additional programs that the Tucker agents feel privileged to serve. One of the most popular seasonal events would have to be the long running “Santa Claus at Geist” program. It is indeed a program that families look forward to every Christmas season. A generation of kids has walked through the office front door to take part in the party and gift giving that makes this event so special. Some of these kids have returned to buy their own homes from one of the 40 full time team members who also live in the area. Ten of these estate agents are from the original team formed so many years ago. It’s interesting to note that these realtors live in the Geist neighborhods of Cambridge, Admirals, Highlands at Geist, Glen Cove, Crystal Pointe, Feather Cove, Cardinal Woods and many more. Many of them are longtime residents who have raised their families while helping new families move to the area. So the next time you drive past the F.C. Tucker Real Estate office at 79th and Fall Creek, tip your hat to the hard working professionals who have sold more houses and placed more families in our Geist neighborhoods than any other company. We guarantee it wouldn’t be the same Geist without the help of people who dedicate their professional time and community energy to make our area a great place to live!

Fishers High School junior Cat Bouwkamp (left) with her friend Riley Dismore prior to the prom this spring. Bouwkamp was one of the first athletes to qualify for the 2012 London Paralympic games this August.
The Girl with the Olympic Tattoo By Kara Reibel Two years ago, atGeist.com featured an article on a 13-yearold fencing phenom who had just switched to wheelchair fencing from able-bodied fencing. Cat Bouwkamp’s goal at that time was to compete in London at the Olympics. Her goal is becoming a reality. Cat was one of the first athletes to qualify for the 2012 London Paralympic games this August. Listed as one of the Top 12 Paralympic athletes to watch, Cat is the youngest fencer on the team. Cat is also the only female on the USA Paralympic fencing team to qualify. Her sponsors include Nike and the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana. This summer, Cat will first compete in the Fencing World Cup in July in Warsaw, Poland. Next, she will attend the Paralympic opening ceremonies in London, with the Queen, 14

on August 29. Her event, foil, will be held on September 4, after she begins her junior year at Fishers High School. “Life is full of obstacle illusions.” – Grant Frazier. Nothing could be closer to the truth for Cat. Born with fibular hemimelia in her right leg, she endured multiple surgeries. Naturally right-handed, and with her right ankle being a fixed joint, she had to become ambidextrous and fence with her left arm. As she and her peers matured, the challenge with her leg became more pronounced. Her talent and potential was recognized by wheelchair judge, Sean Schumate, whom Cat deeply admires and respects. Where others see a limitation, some find an opportunity. Schumate and the National Paralympic Coach, Maestro Les Stawiki, approached Cat with the idea of switching to wheelchair fencing. Cat and her parents, Alan
| J u n e 2 0 1 2
and Janet Bouwkamp, carefully considered the switch. The bottom line of their decision process was that wheelchair fencing leveled the playing field. Once seated in a competition, competitors are at an arm’s length away and held in a fixed position. Arguably, this is the most aggressive form of the sport. Whereas during an able-bodied match fencers are able to shuffle backward, if only for a moment, in wheelchair fencing, the brain/body reactions must be instantaneous. There is nowhere to hide, not even for a nanosecond. Switching to wheelchair fencing has opened up a whole
new world to Cat. She has friends all over the world who share her ethic of good sportsmanship and, like her, have overcome challenges to be where they are. Cat is a golden girl, regardless of the results in London. Cat Bouwkamp is a member of Indy Sabre. She can be followed on Twitter, ESPNHS, and PBS Medal Quest. Kara Reibel, owner of Geist Pilates, has been a fitness professional for over 25 years. She is the mother of 3 kids and lives in the Geist area.
Lawrence Central Journalism Teacher Wins National Award Lawrence Central journalism teacher Elizabeth Granger has captured top 2012 honors nationally for faculty adviser of a school publication from the National Federation of Press Women. She is the adviser of LC’s Cub Reporter student newspaper. She also took second place in education stories. Her entry consisted of two articles, one published by atGeist in September 2011 about the new principals at LC and LN, and the other published in Student Group Tour Magazine about a Teaching American History program which included several LC teachers. Granger earned the right to compete at the national level when she took first place at the state level with the Woman’s Press Club of Indiana, NFPW’s state affiliate. j u ne 2 0 1 2 |

Boater Safety Emergency Protocols for Geist Reservoir
Ron Lipps, Deputy Fire Marshal (on left) and Sergeant Mike Janes, Police Officer/Paramedic (on right) are both aboard the Geist Guardian, Fishers’ new Public Safety Boat.
Have you ever wondered what you would do if you needed immediate attention while boating on Geist? Residents within the community should be aware about what to do if ever they are in a crisis and suddenly need help. Depending on where your boat lies on Geist, you may either be in Marion County or Hamilton County. If your boat were to capsize, catch fire, or if one of its passengers experienced a medical issue, would you be able to explain your whereabouts to the dispatcher? Pinpointing the exact location of your boat with reference to the surrounding shoreline can be challenging, especially when you are in a hurry and every second counts. “Through a partnership with Fishers Fire and Police Departments, we want to create a greater presence for enforcement and safety,” says Clint Crafton, Fishers Dive 20
geist comm u nity
newsletter
Team Commander. “This presence will allow everyone to have a fun and safe summer.”
The All New Geist Guardian Although last year was the pilot program for establishing a presence, this year represents an increasing awareness for water safety — especially with the new Fishers Public Safety Boat, Geist Guardian. This new 27-foot Boston Whaler will be staffed during peak times including approximately six hours on Saturdays, several hours on Sundays, and a few hours on alternating Thursdays and Fridays. If an emergency occurs during any other time, Fishers Fire and Police departments will have quick access to maneuver the Geist Guardian to any designated spot on Geist if necessary.
| J u n e 2 0 1 2
The Geist Guardian is equipped to perform firefighting capabilities, dive procedures, and advanced forward-looking infrared/sonar search and rescue operations. In addition, she is also prepared to monitor communications between Hamilton and Marion County dispatch centers. After all, both counties work together by responding to emergency calls with “Automatic Mutual Aid Response” for all waterrescue missions.
1. Anyone owning a boat should take some type of safety boating class such as the online DNR (Department of Natural Resources) class. http://www.in.gov/dnr/3165.htm
Furthermore, the Geist Guardian also contains a GPS screen, siren, diving platform, deck gun and hand line hose (that use lake water) for fighting fires, and medical equipment such as an Automated External Defibrillator.
2. Drinking and boating carries the same consequences as drinking and driving. Everyone should be careful while boating or operating a vehicle.
What to Do If You Witness an Emergency
3. Everyone should wear an appropriately-sized life jacket, especially children or anyone on board who has difficulty swimming. Every boat should have at least one life jacket on board for each of its passengers as well as a throwable Type IV PFD in case of emergency.
If ever you witness an emergency on Geist Lake, here are some safety steps to follow: 1. Call for help by dialing 911. If you don’t have a cell phone, then attempt to call for help on Marine 16 (VHF radio channel.) If this fails, as a last resort flag down a passing boater to assist you in calling for help. 2. Provide a landmark to dispatcher. Ideally, you should provide a cross street or known location such as “cocktail cove” or whereabouts in reference to the two marinas, Fall Creek Marina or Olio Road Marina. 3. Provide flotation. If a person is in the water, throw him/ her a life jacket. Try to reach the victim with a device such as a pole, rope, or ladder. 4. Remain in location. If a person submerges, stay in location to give rescuers/diving team an exact position. Through a partnership of the Town of Fishers and the Geist Lake Coalition, efforts are being made to label dockside addresses for easier identification purposes. “One of the biggest challenges of water safety remains with

identifying landmarks for emergency crews,” says Steve Orusa, Fishers Fire Chief. “We’re in the process of trying to develop reflective offshore signs to help expedite the waiting time during emergency situations.” These reflective numeric signs would be placed near the shoreline so boaters could easily provide a point of reference to the dispatcher. As we continue to enjoy our time fishing and boating on Geist, we need to remain respectful to everyone who shares this body of water. Orusa reminds us, “We just want to remind people to have fun but to have fun safely.” Janet Striebel serves as a freelance writer. Executive Director Connie Sherman works to give underserved preschoolers a world-class Reggio Emiliainspired education at St. Mary’s Child Center in Lawrence.
It Takes a Village St. Mary’s Child Center Serves Our Area’s Youngest Needy
Photos by Brenda Staples - Story by Tom Britt
It’s lunchtime and just west of the Fort Benjamin Harrison YMCA, a small school bus full of smiling faces pulls up to the Gilliatte Building. Afternoon preschool begins for some of the area’s most underserved three- to five-year-olds coming from Indianapolis’ east side and Lawrence.
St. Mary’s Child Center, an outreach of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and a United Way community partner, provides an advanced early childhood education program serving 215 children, 95% of whom are living in poverty, at three Indianapolis locations. Children of all races converge with Reggio Emilia, Italy-inspired educators to receive an accredited education in their most formidable years. Executive Director Connie Sherman, a former school teacher, leads the charge at St. Mary’s Child Center. Her passion for the mission reignited while attending a lecture by Marian Wright Edelman, CEO and Founder of the j u ne 2 0 1 2 |

Children’s Defense Fund at Butler University, in 2001. “She explained the ‘cradle to grave pipeline’: one in three black boys in poverty will end up in jail,” she said as her eyes welled up. “That touched me; I knew that we were doing the right thing at St. Mary’s.” Not only was Sherman’s heart in alignment with the St. Mary’s mission, the curriculum was eye opening to her as well. Hailed as one of the best preschool programs in the world, the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education process looks at children as “competent, resourceful, curious, imaginative, inventive, and desiring to interact and communicate with others.” Teachers are viewed as co-learners, chalkboards are replaced with group poster boards, and students are encouraged to learn from each

other. “Kids in poverty enter kindergarten 1-1/2 to 2 years behind, and the gap widens as they progress through school,” added Sherman.
local volunteers make a difference Behind the mission of providing a high-quality education to our less fortunate children is an army of volunteers and donors. Thanks to them, St. Mary’s raises over 60% of their operating budget from four annual charity events: • Spring Soiree (March 2) • Annual Raffle (June 28) • Golf Outing (August 9) • Miracle Ball Black Tie Event (November 16) In late 2000, Geist resident Bob Koehne got a phone call from a St. Mary’s supporter Dan Esposito offering him and his wife, Liz, a seat at his sponsored table for the Miracle Ball. “We had a great time and loved the mission of helping these kids. The next year I wanted to go back, but Dan told me I had to buy my own table,” laughed Koehne. He went on to be a board member, president of the board of directors, and now serves as a senior advisor. “If you really want to make a difference in someone’s life, this is the place to be.”
support paying just $5 per week. Students are taught in a 6:1 child-to-adult-ratio class, receive snacks and lunch, transportation to and from school, and free social services. “Annual costs for our services are $7,000 per child,” explains Sherman. A breakthrough program developed years ago is called the Godparent program. Koehne estimates that 140 Godparents have committed to donating $2,000 per year to St. Mary’s “by writing a check for $2,000, selling 20 raffle tickets for $100 each, or sponsoring a foursome at our golf outing and a table at the Miracle Ball.” “The Godparent program has been a great way for us to engage people who might not have the time to serve on our board or volunteer, but they can help financially and that is important, too,” added Sherman.
Open Enrollment for Fall Starting this fall, St. Mary’s will begin enrolling nonscholarship students to their schools. Sherman says the experiment began at their Butler Lab School at IPS 60 when members of the Butler University community began putting their children in the Reggio Emilia-taught classrooms. Their attraction to the program: exceptional quality. “When you have social and economic diversity, both groups come out better than they would have otherwise,” claims Sherman. “Besides, it also helps us expand our scholarship program by adding more revenue to our bottom line.”
Sherman is quick to point out the success of their programming is directly related to all the area school groups that volunteer, the board members who give countless hours, and committee chairs that not only organize their fundraisers but execute at a high level every year.
Rates for non-qualified students will be $90 per week for ½ day preschool and $175 per week for full-day enrollment. Parents who are interested should call 317-361-4887 or visit the website at www.stmaryschildcenter.org.
Reggio Emilia curriculum is typically offered at private schools. St. Mary’s Child Center is one of the only preschools in the US offering this program to the poor, with 95% of their students qualifying for their scholarship

A Teen Dream Room
Before

A
s Lexi Miller began thinking about turning sweet 16, she also began thinking about a dream room for her bedroom. She was ready to transition from her pre-teen pink and black theme to a more sophisticated pre-dorm type of room. A new color scheme was needed, and the bunk beds took up so much room there was no space to hang out with friends. And the carpet, well, let’s just say it sported more nail polish than a teenager’s manicure. So, for Lexi’s birthday, her family decided to invest in their

nest and put together a teen’s dream room. “We emptied the room, “ says faux painter Lisa Murdock. “With the carpet and furniture out, we were working with a clean slate.” First, the walls were all painted white (Certa Pro painters) to erase the heavy pink, the sharpie drawings, and pin holes from years of pinning up photos of pop stars. Then, from a Benjamin Moore color strip they chose “Wedding Veil” and the complementary colors for the walls and trim. A knotty-pine engineered hardwood flooring (ICC Floors) was chosen for a fresh, classic, cool look.
| J u n e 2 0 1 2
“Sometimes an accessory, a painting, or a rug becomes the inspiration for an entire room,” says Lisa. “In this case, it was a peacock blue rug found at Z Gallerie.” With the colors of a peacock feather in mind, the room was filled with shades of blue, green, even white, and mirrored accessories to match. Lisa painted swirls of glittery silver paint on the ceiling for a whimsical look. The heavy bunk beds were replaced with a white loft bed so a bean-bag chair and a desk with chair could fit under the bed. A dresser (T. J. MAXX Home Store) was painted white, and an oversized consignment mirror was painted a silvery blue to top it all off. “I find a lot of things for kids’ rooms in consignment shops,” says Lisa. “The furniture is usually well built, and just about anything can be painted!” Lexi’s favorite part of the room is the corner where they found room to hang the macramé swing she purchased on a recent trip to Costa Rica!
Francina’s Fashion Consignment at Geist 11650 Olio Rd., suite 100 Fishers, iN 46038
Now there’s plenty of space for Lexi and her friends to hang out in her room, and the room is decorated to last through sweet 16 and many years to come! For more information and pictures go to www.patcarlini.com and online atGeist.com.

One of the most important elements of growing a small, locally-owned business is to make sure you capture new customer growth in your own zip code and surrounding areas. Having an established presence oftentimes means competing with national chains that have millions of advertising dollars supporting their famous brands. An interesting statistic from the United States Postal Service tells us that over 43 million new address changes are processed in a year! In other words, new customers are moving in within your business address area every day. These new residents will have a need for many different types of services and products but may not even know that your business exists. Even worse, they may not know how to reach you. This is where Julie and Matthew McCord, franchise owners of Welcomemat Services, should be added to your Rolodex as soon as possible. Why so? Research shows that families and individuals moving into your area are a group of potential customers like no other you have approached before. These customers are actively seeking to discover new neighborhood stores, specialty shops, ice cream and yogurt shops, family restaurants, car repair shops, grocery stores, pet care, cleaners, dentists, doctors, hospitals, and other local resources that they will use to fill their daily needs. And, these new residents will spend 5 times more in their first year of occupancy than the average consumer. If you render the service and they have a good experience with your business, statistics show they will become your most loyal customers. In today’s world, shopping within your own zip code is much preferred.
SO WHAT DOES WELCOMEMAT OFFER? Welcomemat Services is a marketing strategies and technology company providing monthly directmail packages to individuals and families who have recently changed their addresses. Their Welcome to the Neighborhood program is designed to target new residents by presenting professional information on your particular business and location, with a come-see-for-yourself reward of a lovely gift certificate. “Moving is never easy,” says Julie who worked as a successful real estate agent after she and her architect husband, Matthew, moved to Fishers. “I know what it’s like to feel like a fish out of water. You want to belong, be involved, and to get settled in your new neighborhood. Along with this, you need to quickly find those important businesses and services that your family needs. It can be a daunting discovery experience,” she states.
help small businesses think like big businesses. “Our service directly fills the discovery mode for individuals and families when they find themselves in a new area,” said Matthew. “Welcomemat provides one of the nation’s most technologically-advanced and sophisticated neighborhood welcome packages, which is mailed directly to the new homeowner. It is a nationally Welcomemat Services recognized (317) 418-2865 and respected www.welcomematservices.com neighborhood program that immediately exposes your business to a prospective new customer,” adds Julie. You can tailor this service to one zip code or several, depending on the desired reach of your business. Different packages contain gift certificates that are limited to one per business per category. This policy allows value and exclusivity for your business, as you are not lumped in with other competitors who also are looking for new customers. To new residents, this quickly identifies a local merchant’s existence (address, product, service, website/ Facebook/Twitter) and helps them to quickly become acclimated in their new surroundings. When the gift certificate is presented for redemption, a data program is delivered to the business owner and this action initiates a follow-up “Thank you for your Business” postcard, with another promotional discount offer. “We call it a 3-step program that works … and our research is available to show how successful this program is,” adds Julie. Matthew and Julie decided to become franchise owners when they discovered Welcomemat Services and the opportunity to own their own business and to grow the business at their own pace. It opened the door for them to become a family business unit that provides a superior business product with the freedom to work together, as well as the flexibility to be really present in their kids’ daily lives. If you are a small business owner and want to learn more about this service or find out if your exclusive business category is still available, we suggest you visit welcomematservices.com or give Julie a call at 317-4182865 or email jmccord@welcomematservices.com. And from their point of view, the Welcome Mat is always out!

BLAST ON THE BRIDGE BROUGHT TO Donations are Tax Deductible: G
Dear atGeist.com Readers: We hope we can count on your help this year to support the 2012 Blast on the Bridge at Geist – 4th of July Celebration. In these tough economic times we would like to keep this wonderful celebration alive, as it is quickly becoming a community-building event for Geist. Last year’s event was a huge success with over 10,000 guests on the bridge, and thousands more viewing from boats below. This year’s event will expand to include more food & beverage vendors, family activities (face-painting, balloon artists, arcade games) and a i94 & 104.5 WJJK radio station simulcast. The boat-parade, Gordon Pipers and skydivers will again kick-off the festivities and the evening will be capped by another amazing fireworks display. 32

Triton Brewing Company
Micro Brew with
Macro Appeal By Neal Moore What does one do with a decades-old mule barn smack in the middle of what used to be Fort Benjamin Harrison? If you’re David Waldman, you turn it into a microbrewery - with macro appeal. You’ve probably seen the low-slung structure along Wheeler Drive in Lawrence with the decorative brewing vat planted out front. Here, Waldman and two partners brew and pour private-label bottles and growlers of specialty suds on property once owned by the U.S. Army. “We were checking out location options elsewhere,” remembered Waldman. “But our real estate consultant kept nagging us saying, ‘You gotta try the Fort!’ So, we did, and saw exactly what we were

looking for. All the logistical pieces were here, and with much more character.” And, so it came to pass that on September 2, 2011, the Triton Brewing Company opened its doors, but only after Master Brewer Jon Lang transformed the longempty mule (and later jeep, then race car) barn into a state-of-the-art beerbrewing business. Fermentation bubbles away in the huge finishing tanks that Lang installed. The grain and hops are milled on site. Lang, who spent time in Germany and learned to appreciate good beer, described the brewing process as physically tough, but satisfying work. Pointing to a bottle of Magnificent Amber he added, “I like saying ‘This is mine.’” Triton employs a reverse osmosis filtration process that strips Lawrence water to its core. The microbrewery uses lots of water – 60,000 gallons a month – which brings us to the brewery’s name. “Triton was the son of Poseidon, the Greek God of the Sea. Much like our brewing process, he was all about the water,” Waldman patiently explained. “Poseidon carried a trident, a kind of three-pronged pitchfork used for spear fishing. The word trident is Latin meaning ‘three teeth.’ Our logo is a trident, as a reminder of what’s important to us.”

Athena Scholl serves up a glass of Triton brew to some Lawerence area regulars. Clearly, they’re pushing the right buttons. With five offerings including a brown, a stout, and an IPA, Triton brews about 160 barrels a day – a capacity expected to jump to 280 barrels by mid-summer. “The toughest part is no matter how much we produce, we can’t ever meet the demand,” declared Waldman.

Athena Scholl is a Triton waitress (yes, that’s really her first name, and naturally she’d work in a place steeped in Greek mythology). “We have lots of regulars – everything’s been very positive. I think it’s very cool seeing this kind of development in Lawrence.”

Warning: Internet Fraud Abounds for Investors By Mario Massillamany Internet sites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn have been a boon for investors, who can research stocks, check out financial advisors/brokers, browse the latest investor news, plan investment strategy or communicate with fellow investors or investment advisors. There’s also a dark side to such easily accessible information. The Internet has become a useful tool for
investment fraud, with online fraudsters getting increasingly better at coming off like a genuine presence through fraudulent websites, email and other communications.
Chat room victims Interactive sites, including chat rooms and bulletin boards, provide many “targets of opportunity” for fraudsters. Be wary of tweet or email for any direct message from an unknown source about special investment opportunities. The latest technology allows “spammers” to send millions of personalized emails about “can’t miss” investments and other opportunities. You can report to the SEC Complaint Center any suspicious activity. Watch out for these favorite ruses: Sound too good to be true? It probably is. Compare the promise of superior returns with reputable stock indexes. If the “incredible” returns are much more, it’s at least high risk, if not actual fraud. “Guaranteed” returns. Most healthy returns are far from guaranteed. The pitch to act right now, lest this golden moment pass you by: a time-honored fraudster tactic. Always take time to check out the offer. Be really suspicious of “once-in-alifetime” opportunities based on special “inside information.”
Fraudsters lurk in online groups Don’t make an investment based solely on the advice of a member of an online group you participate in. Fraudsters love to prey on such groups, seeking to connect with the group and the informal rapport among its members. Even if the advice is from someone you know, that person could have been duped by the fraudulent investment scheme he or she is unknowingly promoting.
Note security and privacy settings Think about how the information you provide on social networks and other sites across the Web could be obtained by those who are not friends, but fraudsters. Know how any privacy or security settings work. 40

Common scams There are a number of tried and true scams on the Internet. Here are some common ones. First they pump, then they dump “Pump and Dump” frauds hype a company’s stock with misleading and outright false statements on websites urging readers to buy or sell a stock quickly before the price drops. They may cite inside information, or a guaranteed method for picking stocks. Such statements may come from company insiders or paid promoters who stand to gain as their shares are “pumped” up by a buying frenzy they ignite. Then they sell or “dump” their shares and stop promoting the stock. Consequently, the price goes down and investors lose money. Fraud can look respectable Fraud can look very legitimate. There are respectable websites and web-based newsletters that offer investment information and advice. And companies may pay newsletters to push specific stocks. This is legal as long as the newsletters provide proper disclosure about who is paying them, how much the companies are paying, and by what means. But fraudsters can lie about such information while claiming to be independent, unbiased purveyors of investment information … who just happen to stand to profit handsomely by persuading others to buy particular stocks, often penny stocks. And it gets worse. Some of these newsletters may be advertised on legitimate websites, such as the online financial pages of news organizations. For advice on how to tell what is legitimate, go to the SEC’s tips for checking out newsletters.
investments run by unlicensed individuals that are often frauds. Superior returns are touted, with little or no risk. A HYIP website might promise (should we say guarantee?”) annual, monthly, weekly or even daily returns of 30 or 40 percent or more. Some use the term “prime bank” program. Offering frauds An offering fraud is a kind of security that’s offered to the public where the terms are materially misrepresented, particularly about the likelihood of a return. Some offerings are not fraudulent, but fail to comply with pertinent registration rules of the federal securities laws. Some offerings are also exempt from this provision. It’s best to see if they are registered with the SEC, a state, or otherwise exempt.

Junior Conner Christiansen (middle) talks over plays with Fishers High School football coach Rick Wimmer on the sidelines. during the third game of the season. He said he liked the bigger stage. He liked the scheme of things. He liked the atmosphere. He liked performing before a full house most games. Most important, he liked the chance to compete for the starting job at quarterback in a big-time program like Fishers, which won the Class 5A state championship the previous season. “It was neat to come from a 2A school and have such a good year,” said Christiansen, a 6-foot, 158-pounder whose season was cut short by the shoulder surgery. He required eight screws in his broken collarbone on his throwing side. “I don’t think anyone really expected it, me having such a good season. I did, though,” he said with a confident smile. Yep, he’s certainly a confident young man…very poised and beyond his years in maturity.
Transfer Leads Fishers Football Photos and Story by Mark Morrow Conner Christiansen spent the high school baseball season sitting, watching, learning, longing to play. Hopefully, there will be two better seasons ahead for the incoming junior at Fishers High School. With a lost baseball season behind him because of a shoulder injury he received from football, followed by 44

a knee injury while rehabbing for the baseball season, the left-hander has turned his attention and focus to the football field. Christiansen transferred from Class 2A Heritage Christian last season for his sophomore year. He sat for a while early, watched, learned a new system, ran the Wildcat offense on occasion, and then he emerged onto the scene as the starting quarterback for the Tigers | J u n e 2 0 1 2
Now, there’s one thing that will keep him smiling. ”I’ll be glad when I get that first hit out of the way and I know that I’m ready and in the shape I need to be,” he said, nodding his head as if taking that first hit has been on his mind for quite a while now. And being named the starting quarterback surely would prompt another smile by him. “I’m not ready to name a starting quarterback just quite yet,” said Fishers coach Rick Wimmer. “Connor and (senior) Ben Pritchett are the main two in the mix, though.” Christiansen would appear to be the favorite to get the job again, based on his experience and the fact he has two years of eligibility remaining. “Connor has had a very good summer in our workouts,” said Wimmer. “He came on strong last season, and it was disappointing the way it ended for him.”

Once the youngster started doing things the way Wimmer wanted, life became much better for quarterback and coach. Wimmer openly showed some frustration early on because Christiansen wanted to run the ball too much. The balance came – throwing and running – and Christiansen put up some impressive numbers before the injury. Christiansen – who underwent surgery the next day after being sidelined in the October 14 game at
Brownsburg (which the Tigers lost 3124)- had a 5-2 won-loss record as the starter. Christiansen performed admirably for the Tigers while learning a new system. And it didn’t take him long to make his mark in the “Big Boys” program. He nearly reached the 1,000-yard plateau. He completed 64 of 123 passes (.520 percentage) for 979 yards

Some even believe that Conner Christiansen could be equally gifted as a pitcher. Only time will tell. Regardless, though, both football and baseball programs would appear to be in good hands. Understanding Weight Loss By Jimmy Girot III
clarity and motivation.
“Why can’t I lose weight? I eat well and exercise every day! She [insert digitally/ surgically enhanced celebrity] always looks so toned and thin!” Fundamentally, we are all quite similar but also quite different. In its simplest form, weight loss depends on various psychological and metabolic factors. The enigma that is “weight loss” is a deeply-layered topic. Fortunately, we are able to peel back these layers and find that it has a fairly simple explanation. The underlying science of losing weight and, more importantly, the actual meaning and significance of one’s body weight, needs to be addressed. If your frustration has fallen on unsympathetic ears, hopefully this will offer some
The prevailing laws of physics regarding matter and energy govern all of us. While I can’t speak for you, there is a slim chance I would win an argument with Isaac Newton. That said, arguments against energy balance and “calories in versus calories out” are basically arguments against Isaac Newton. In general terms, calories are units of energy. When the previously-mentioned energy balance reflects a calorie surplus, the human body will normally turn the surplus into a small carbohydrate energy reserve (glycogen) and then into a much larger energy reserve (fat). So what about those dreadful friends that consume an unimaginable amount of calories and never gain weight— were we wrong about caloric balance? Weight loss is overwhelmingly about caloric intake and expenditure which illustrates how we are all alike. Metabolism may be the kicker for some and undoubtedly illustrates how we are all different. Metabolism is the rate at which your body uses energy, or burns calories. Although each person’s metabolism works the same way, the rate at which the body metabolizes nutrients varies in every individual. The primary ways to burn calories as an adult are physical

activity, thermogenesis (generation of heat), and basal metabolic rate (resting energy expenditure). Obviously, you can choose how much exercise occurs in most situations. Unfortunately, you don’t get to choose your rate of thermogenesis and certainly not the basal metabolic rate (calories burned at rest). At this point, the underlying science seems unfair, exhausting, and redundant. That said, an examination of what to consider and even what not to consider in regards to weight loss may be more helpful.

Society is more obese than ever, and those who feel like physiological anomalies are desperately searching for alternative methods of weight loss. If you are one of these many, I urge you to do ample research and consult with an expert prior to experimenting with any alleged weightloss method. Our bodies have homeostatic needs — nutrient levels that must be met for sustainable health. If a certain nutrient is the body’s chief source for fuel and regulates digestion, it doesn’t seem sensible to completely eliminate that nutrient from a daily diet.
This summer, stop hiding your legs!
Instead of becoming obsessed with merely body weight, it is more important and indicative of one’s health to consider comprehensive body composition. More detailed than just body weight, body composition also includes body fat percentage and body circumference. These types of measurements, which any qualified trainer or practitioner can provide, are more important to a person’s overall health and fitness. The best example of body weight versus body composition lies in the fact that two people can have exactly the same body weight but one may have a drastically higher (or lower) percentage of body fat. The person with the lower body fat percentage, despite weighing the same as the other, likely looks more fit and healthy. Weight loss is an important aspect and foundation to begin many health transformations. At some point, to avoid a complete psychological meltdown, other health factors and body measurements need to be considered. You are not alone in your frustrations, and it is entirely possible to reach your weight loss/ body composition goals. Exercise regularly, eat well, and live inspired!

HSE Names Younts as Teacher of the Year HSE High School’s agriculture teacher Tom Younts was selected for district Teacher of the Year. Younts has taught agriculture to high school students and sponsored FFA in the district for over 30 years. A colleague said it well, “He has travelled all over the world with students who wouldn’t otherwise have these opportunities to be recognized for their achievements. He works with them nights, weekends, breaks and holidays from school. He exposes them to a world in which they can find a place to achieve and belong. He helps them find opportunities beyond high school . . . and takes a very personal interest in them and their families.”

Clearer Water at Geist Comes at a Price Zebra Mussels Flexing Their Way Into Geist Reservoir
Photos and Story by Janet C. Striebel Have you noticed any difference in the water clarity of Geist? Some residents believe the water appears clearer lately. This represents a positive attribute for our seven mile long body of water—or does it? Many are speculating that zebra mussels are the reason. These freshwater mollusks which were originally seen as far back as 1769 in the Caspian Sea and Ural River in Russia have gradually been invading our rivers and lakes in America. Now they have entered Geist. These mussels are a threat to our fishermen, boaters, drinking water system, and ecosystem. “I was fishing one day and I caught two invasive species in one cast,” says Dan Wise, Service Manager at Geist Lake 56

Marina. Two years ago, Wise was fishing on Geist when he saw a zebra mussel attached to a Chinese mystery snail. It actually was enclosed in the “trap door function” of the startled snail. Luckily, Wise, President of the Fall Creek Valley Bassmasters in Pendleton, was already well read on the various invasive species when he lured his prized-catch that day. Wise was the first person to report finding a zebra mussel in Geist.
What Are zebra mussels? Zebra mussels, whose scientific name is Dreissena polymorpha, are also called bivalves, because they have two valves or shells, one on the left and one on the right. Incidentally, their dark striped pattern against the light

Zebra mussels attach themselves to underwater items, like this boat propeller shown here. Underwater docks, drain culverts, and even shell fish can quickly be covered by this invasive species. beige colored valve is how the zebra mussel earned its name. However, some shells are either real dark or light thereby hindering the appearance of stripes altogether. Since their shells are extremely sharp, recreational users should consider wearing wading shoes in order to avoid stepping on them and getting cuts on their feet. Ranging in size from 1 to 2 inches long, zebra mussels are native to freshwater rivers and lakes in Western Asia and Eastern Europe but were first discovered in the United States in 1988 in Lake St. Clair (located between Lake Huron and Lake Erie.) In 1990 they were found in Lake Michigan and by 1991, they were seen in Lakes Wolf, Syracuse and Wawasee. Zebra mussels generally live for 4 to 5 years and in water depths of 6 to 24 feet. The female produces between 30,000 and 1 million eggs per year. Their rapid colonization may yield clearer water but they bring many negative repercussions to our lake.
Why Should We Care About These Intruders? Zebra mussels negatively impact native aquatic species, eventually affecting entire ecosystems. These bottom feeders can have detrimental effects on fish populations. They attach themselves to hard surfaces including crayfish, turtles, and native mollusks. Some mussels have been spotted with more than 10,000 zebra mussels adhered to them. As seen in the Great Lakes region, zebra mussels have created a filtering activity at such an amazing rate that the water looks much clearer. The assumption would be that the water is cleaner. Unfortunately, this is not true. In actuality, the more visible water (depleted of algae) leads to a food reduction for microscopic organisms. A large zebra mussel population can cause a decrease in other animals such as fish, mollusks, and birds. Unfortunately, the algae and animals consumed by zebra mussels are also the food for

were hundreds of zebra mussels dangling from it. It sounded like a bunch of Christmas lights clanking together.” These organisms have already proved to be costly to water users and power plants that have spent millions of dollars cleaning them out of their facilities. Feeding on algae, the zebra mussels filter water via a siphon—about one liter a day! They also like to attach themselves to the insides of pipes in order to have a steady stream of water and food flowing near them. They can clog water intake pipes which is a concern since Indianapolis obtains drinking water from Geist. larval fish and other native species.
Treatment for Clustering
Wise has expressed concern of the impact of zebra mussels on the “Eurasian watermilfoil” a feathery foliage plant commonly seen in aquariums that has somehow made its way into Geist (possibly from people dumping contents of aquariums.) He says, “As zebra mussels make the water clearer, the sunlight penetrates the water easier causing the milfoil to grow deeper. I have seen boat propellers tangled up in the milfoil.”
“It’s amazing just how ‘explosive’ the growth rate has gotten in just a couple of years,” says Dave Irish, member of the Geist Lake Coalition. “The problem will continue to grow ‘exponentially’ to a point that nobody really knows what all issues they will create or how to fix the problems until it is too late and permanent damage has been done.”
Also, as this foliage continues to spread, fisherman will have a harder time as their hooks get entangled. One time when he was fishing, Wise recalls, “My hook got caught up in a large piece of milfoil. As I pulled it out of the water, there

Although some chemicals can kill zebra mussels, they would also destroy other forms of life in the lake. Removal of these invaders has been done by mechanical scrapers, air, hot water, chemicals and sound. New methods are currently being investigated. Unfortunately, there is not one perfect solution for all affected facilities and situations.

Irish comments, “It doesn’t really matter if they’re at the bottom of the lake or attached to the top of the log, the zebra mussels are there and don’t appear to be going away!”
Five Day Drying or Hot Water Cleaning Now that the zebra mussels have invaded our lake, one thing we can do is help to prevent the spreading of these aggressive species into other bodies of water such as Morse and Eagle Creek Reservoirs which have not been affected yet. “We need to be careful not to transport these mussels from one lake to another,” says Scott Rodgers, Steering Committee Chair of Geist Fall Creek Watershed Alliance and VP & Co-Founding Director of Geist Lake Coalition. He continues, “These mussels are like hitchhikers in that they attach themselves to the bilge or hull of the boats.” They can even plug up the water intake on the inboards and outboards. “Boaters should allow their boats and trailers to dry for five days before entering another body of water,” says Doug Keller, DNR Aquatic Habitat Coordinator. “The zebra mussels and veligers (larvae stage) will not survive out of water past five days.” Keller recommends going to a carwash or power washing the hull and trailer and flush out the motor with water at least 140 degrees. Furthermore, boat lifts and piers should be disinfected if they are removed from Geist and placed in another lake.
and sediments coming into the lake and the two years of zebra mussels colonizing.” With regards to helping to preserve Geist Lake, Rodgers recommends, “We should all help support our legislators on clean water initiatives including those from an individual standpoint.” For more information about Zebra Mussels, visit www.atGeist.com or visit the Geist Lake Coalition (www.GeistLake.org) or Geist Watershed Alliance (www.GeistWatershed.com).

The water in Geist may appear clearer to some this summer. Keller believes, “This may be due to a combination of both the lack of rainfall with no more nutrients
