CURTAIN CALL ON MY CAMPAIGN AGAINST CANCER Writer / Tom Britt
Thanks to all of you for putting up with my endless Facebook posts and updates from my Man of the Year campaign for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. During my 10-week campaign, I was overwhelmed by your generosity and kind words. If you donated anonymously or through one of our donation boxes, “thank you”. If you donated online or sent in an envelope, check for your name on pages 38 and 39. I also listed some of the companies that were instrumental in our “campaign against cancer.” As my final curtain call, I’d like to give a special shout out to a few people that just went above and beyond to help my campaign. Nancy Strickland: Brought the entire Fortville and McCordsville business community together to host the Fab Fortville Fashion Show at the 10 West Conference Center. • JENNIFER LEAR: Helped orchestrate the Fab Fortville event and provided a lot of social media coverage throughout the campaign.
• YOPI HAVLICK: Served on my board, attended every meeting and nearly every event. She brought a lot of her Indy SurviveOars cohorts as well. • DAVE SMILEY: Indy’s favorite radio DJ helped us promote the Landsharks event in Broad Ripple and hung out with us that evening. • RAY & ADAM COX: Went out of their way to provide some unique silent and live auction items for the LLS Grand Finale. They also provided beverages for the Fab Fortville event. • BECKY PFEIFER: Through a small online wager, she energized the Geist Jazzercise crowd. She also attended the Gala with Heidi Tumbarello. • JOHN & DOREEN LONG: Without even flinching, John and Doreen provided everything from campaign posters to bumper stickers. • JEANNE BRITT: Of course, my wife and sidekick was there for every event and helped me keep everything organized.
At the Grand Finale Gala, I was thankful to have my friends and family in attendance. L-R: Jeanne Britt, myself, Eric & Stefanie Neer, Rob Turk & Erin Dickman. 6 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JUNE 2015 / atGeist.com

GEIST HALF WATER STATION CONTEST WINNER Writer / Kara Reibel
With a humid and slightly rainy start to the Geist Half, the volunteers at the Cambridge water stop were ready to cheer on the runners with a new collective inspiration, replete with a dragon boat prop. “We love partnering with the Indy SurviveOars," says Lorna Goodwin of The National Bank of Indianapolis. “They are just such amazing and inspiring individuals. We’ve sponsored this water stop for six consecutive years since joining the Fishers banking community, and this year it was even more special.” Longterm survivor Yopi Havlik is president of the Board of Indy SurviveOars. “When I started with SurviveOars, I was scared to death about it, and now I am in my sixth racing season,” shares Havlik. Havlik is dedicated to helping others
recovering from breast cancer through her work at Fig Leaf in Community Hospital where she does prosthetic fittings for mastectomy patients and compression fittings. “Indy SurviveOars is the perfect group to help you get back to living a full life, and with the support of these women, you know you can do anything,” shares Havlik. Havlik’s parents wear supportive T-shirts that read “SupportOars” across the back. Carolyn and Howard Pugh attend every event and do whatever they can to support the group. “When Yopi was first diagnosed, she would say, ‘I won’t wear pink,’ and now look at this,” shares Carolyn Pugh. “It’s a miracle to watch as a parent. We are so proud of her.” Dragon Boat rower Nancy Collett was recruited for the team upon attending the Pink Ribbon Connection Fashion Show
last year. “Being part of the crew with the dragon boat gives me my freedom back,” shares Collett, who was injured by a drunk driver two years ago and then diagnosed with breast cancer shortly after her accident recovery. “The team has fully embraced me, and I feel like I have my life back.” Accompanying the water station is musician and inspirational speaker Kayla Wyatt. HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME Summer is here! Is there anything better than outdoor concerts? Actually, there is – when those outdoor concerts are FREE! The Fishers Concert Series is back for the 13th year. It’s bigger and better than ever this year with several options for you to enjoy on the lawn at the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. On Tuesday nights from 7-9 p.m., you can grab your blankets, lawn chairs and coolers
and head over to the sprawling lawn in front of the amphitheater. These concerts are usually packed, so come early if you want to sit close to the stage. The Tuesday Summer Concert Series runs from June 2 through July 14. The last two Tuesdays are saved as rain dates for any concerts that were cancelled due to bad weather. Parrots of the Caribbean, Dave and Rae and Endless Summer are just a few
of the bands you can enjoy on Tuesdays. No tickets are needed for these events. Just come and enjoy the show! The AMP After Dark Concert Series runs a little later on Friday nights from 9-11 p.m. These concerts are more geared toward adults. They begin Friday, June 5, and will continue through August. A few acts you can enjoy include An Innocent Band, Firecracker Blues and Slim Pickins. Though you won’t need “Two Tickets to Paradise,” you will need tickets to get into the Eddie Money concert on Friday, July 24. Listening to Eddie Money out under the stars for free? I think “I’m in Love”!!! Get there early for this one. The gates open at 7 p.m. This concert is sponsored by WJJK. As the show gets closer, details on how to get tickets can be found on their website. Just FYI – for this show, coolers are not allowed. We got a chance to go to one of these AMP After Dark concerts in May. If you were a girl in the ’80s, you probably had a crush on Rick Springfield! Whether you watched him as Noah Drake on “General Hospital” or knew every word to “Jessie’s Girl,” you loved him. So needless to say, we jumped at the chance to go see him.

He didn’t disappoint! He looked great, and his voice was spot on. He sang all our favorites and added some fun new ones. We stood next to a guy who got there at 3 p.m. to make sure he was in the front row. He and his wife seemed to know every word to even the obscure songs!
can go to @fishersin on Twitter or follow the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater Facebook page. Great job to Fishers for providing entertainment this summer! There’s plenty of parking, lots of room for sitting or standing and just a great atmosphere.
Rick told a lot of fun personal stories and interacted constantly with the fans. The smaller venue made the concert a much more personal Who said the best things in life aren’t free!? experience. He went out to the crowd for the song “Human Touch” and made a lot of ladies’ night by grabbing their hands. It was a fun night under the stars listening to great music. At the events, you can pack your own cooler or buy drinks there. There’s a wine tent sponsored by JJ Winery and Big Dawg Brewhaus, or you can head over to the beer tent sponsored by Four Day Ray Brewing. You’ll also find a food truck in case you get the munchies! Some other events that can be enjoyed at the amphitheater this summer include the 53rd Annual Blues Fest on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. You can also check out our local actors at plays that will be held on stage this summer. To stay up-to-date on what’s happening at the amphitheater, you

A big thank you to AH Collection Owners Anne White and Holly Kirsh who threw fun shopping parties at their boutiques. Restaurants Red Sake and Detour offered up dining out nights with proceeds going to LLS, and musicians and comedians gave their time and talents to a one day Music Fest at the Rathskeller downtown, put together by yet another volunteer, Doug Karr. Topping the list of unique fundraisers was the movie screening of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in the catacombs of the City Market downtown, thanks to Stevi Stoesz Kersh who arranged the evening of fun.

I also want to thank my Campaign Manager Steve Gerardi, president of SG Entertainment, who I met more than 20 years ago when I first came to town with WTHR-13 and “The Bob and Tom Show.” Steve and I would also like to extend our thanks to Klipsch, 500 Festival, French Lick Resort, Live Nation, Pacers Sports and Entertainment, The Palladium, Hoosier Park and Sharon Smith. The Campaign wrapped up Saturday, May 9, at the JW Marriott downtown, and one more round of thanks goes to those who donated items to the silent auction including Dr. Danielle Davidson of Perfect Smiles Dental Care, PC, Holly Paquin of SimplySkin Med Spa and Glassworks by Design of Brownsburg. Congratulations goes to the winner of Woman of the Year 2015, Kelly Treinen, who has a touching story behind her efforts and raised more than $80,000 for LLS! So thank you all once again, and remember every dollar you donated goes to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society who funds research and treatments for blood cancer patients and ultimately finding cures for blood cancers one day! 24 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JUNE 2015 / atGeist.com

NOT YOUR PARENTS’ SAT…
THE NEW SAT AND WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHY WAIT ANOTHER Beat theMAKE Fall Rush SUMMER? YOUR & Make your Backyard DREAMS REALITY! DreamsA a Reality
Writer / Janelle Morrison Photographer / JJ Kaplan
The agony of taking the SAT® is a rather distant memory for some. Unfortunately for the Class of 2017, the preparation for the new SAT format may be even more daunting, and how university admissions offices nationwide will value the scores is still rather ambiguous. The College Board announced in March 2014 that it was redesigning the SAT. It released an initial 211-page overview that is a work in progress. The redesigned SAT will place greater emphasis on reasoning, analyzing data and critical thinking. The test will incorporate a “rights-only” scoring in which a student will earn points for correct answers with no penalty for incorrect answers. The current SAT penalizes the student 1/4 point for each incorrect answer. The new SAT will have two math sections, one calculator section and one no-calculator section, and will have an emphasis on evidence-based reading and writing as opposed to the current critical reading, writing, math and essay sections, to name just a few of the format changes.

Kurt Spitler, owner and executive director of the Huntington Center, located in Carmel, is prepping students for the current SAT format for this fall while preparing parents and students for the new SAT that will take effect in March of 2016. “If you are a senior in high school now, the changes in the SAT won’t affect you,” Spitler explained. “If you are a junior in the 2014-2015 school year, the current SAT is available only through January 2016 of your senior year. However, for sophomores, you have three options. You can either prepare to take the current SAT this fall in October, November, December or January; secondly, prepare for the ACT only; or your third option is to be the ‘guinea pig’ and wait to take the new SAT in March. “Now if your child wants to get into the IU Kelley School of Business, a nationally renowned business school, you can go on their website, and it will tell you what GPA, SAT or ACT score you currently need to get direct admittance into their school, though there is nothing on their website that tells you what score you will need with the new SAT.
“A perfect SAT score is currently 2400, and it is going down to 1600, the way that it used to be in 2005. I have contacted many universities and asked if they will still superscore the old SAT and for how long. I have also inquired about what are they planning to do for the new SAT, and the response is yes, they plan to superscore the old SAT, but regarding the new SAT, they ‘don’t know.’”
It is unknown at this point how the universities are going to emphasize or value the new SAT when they are looking at seats available for that coming year. By this July, Spitler and his instructors will have all new curricula to prepare students for the spring SAT and the October PSAT that will both be in administered in the new format.

Currently 95 percent of the schools throughout the U.S. superscore the SAT. They take the best critical reading, math and writing scores from multiple SATs of an individual student and then extract these best scores into one superscore. “They’re not going to be able to superscore the new SAT with the old one,” Spitler emphasized. “They haven’t alerted us
as to when they’re going to stop. Last year, Michigan and Ohio State stopped superscoring because of what was coming up in 2016. How many other Big Ten schools are going to follow?” The instructors at Huntington Learning Center are ahead of the curve and are preparing students for the changes while continuing to prepare the students who are

able to take the old SAT before March. So why is SAT changing? “SAT and ACT are competing organizations,” Spitler said. “The ACT has become more prevalent among students looking at higher education options. Typically what we do when a student comes in to our facility, we will give them a practice SAT test and a practice ACT. The ‘practice’ ACT is a retired real test used and not a Huntington test. “We will compare those two tests on a national basis and see where they are starting out higher. Some students will be about equal, and some will see a huge delta with one test over the other. Both the SAT and ACT are approved by the universities, and 99 percent of them, including Ivy League schools, accept both.” The Huntington system has become a proven method of tutoring and preparation because each program is based upon the individual student. Dr. Raymond and Eileen Huntington in New Jersey founded it in 1977. Spitler purchased the Carmel franchise threeand-a-half years ago from its original owner, and their location has been operating for 11 years. “The Huntington system is amazing, and it’s all in how we do it,” Spitler expressed. “Everything that we do here is individualized, and we focus on each student. We are not a crutch, and we are not here to help a student with their homework. Our purpose is to increase their skill sets. If we increase their skill sets, their confidence is going to go up, and if they are confident, they are going to be more motivated.”

Cultivating Her Roots Martha Hoover Flourishes Where She is Planted
Writer / Kara Reibel
The motivation behind opening Café Patachou at 49th and Penn was fueled by the need to fill a void for the type of place Martha Hoover wished to frequent. The location selected for this gutsy venture was close to home, close to her roots. “Investing into my community is natural for me,” shares Hoover. “It only makes sense to invest in the place that you love.”

Hoover’s investment in her own neighborhood is substantial. It’s evident she believes in the Broad Ripple / Meridian Kessler neighborhoods, for her investment in these areas is consistent and generous. Not only does she have four of her restaurants in the area, but the Patachou corporate office and production kitchen are located here too. “Not only do we have several locations concentrated in Broad Ripple and the Meridian Kessler neighborhoods, but each time Hoover remodels and improves the properties, it is with significant thoughtfulness and care,” says Patachou Inc. Brand Manager Christina Pippen. “Martha only does things one way, and that’s top notch, down to the last spoon.” Rejuvenating a dilapidated building and turning it into a casual walk-in restaurant along the Monon is a prime example of the love Hoover has for the area as well as fostering Patachou Foundation’s mission to feed hungry kids. Public Greens, Hoover’s new concept restaurant, is entirely committed to giving back to the community she holds dear. But it means far more, for they grow much of their own produce onsite. Hoover partnered with Growing Places Indy, supplying gardener Joe Huff as the in-house farmer at Public Greens to maintain and cultivate the raised beds along the Monon Trail. Huff is scheduling “growing” workshops for the home gardener. “We plan to cover topics such as companion planting,” says Huff. “For instance, planting basil with tomatoes helps with spacial efficiency which is an element of sustainable urban farming.”
Joe Huff
Farm Manager Tyler Henderson of Growing Places Indy is thrilled to be working with Public Greens and The Patachou Foundation. “At Growing Places Indy, our mission is to empower individuals and communities to Grow Well, Eat Well, Live Well and Be Well,” shares Henderson. “The Public Greens Micro Farm on the Monon Trail is a great addition to our other urban farming sites including the White River State Park, the Cottage Home Neighborhood and the Chase Near Eastside Legacy Center.” atGeist.com / JUNE 2015 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / 35

A SUMMER OF PAYING IT FORWARD question: If you had one week to impact the rest of someone’s life, what would you do? This summer, the four men will embark on a journey in an RV visiting 14 colleges from coast to coast, Eugene, Oregon, to Gainesville, Florida. Their mission: to inspire people to make the greatest impact on people’s lives in the shortest amount of time. They’ll spend five days at each of the 14 campuses. To start, they’ll interview local residents and ask them the central question: If you had one week to impact the rest of someone’s life, what would you do? Then the four team members will review the answers and deliberate to select the person who they feel would make the greatest impact. They’ll spend the remaining four days helping that person devise a plan to make an impact and carry it out. The four fraternity brothers will take plenty of video footage throughout the journey, and in the end, they’ll create a documentary showing the world what it means to truly

make an impact. “We want the documentary to be a testament to the huge impact Xavier had on us in such a short amount of time,” Hall said. “We want to share that with the rest of the world as we spread the same love he had for life and positivity across the country.” This ambitious project seems overwhelming for the four soon-to-be seniors who would be embarking on their final summer of freedom. At a time when thoughts of most seniors turn to the home stretch of college, interviewing and selecting the “perfect” job, these four are determined instead to spend the summer paying it forward.
While the teammates are spending the summer focusing on giving, they also hope to gain something from it. “I expect to take some time for self-reflection,” Rose said. “So much of our lives we spend working on things for other people like teachers, friends and parents, but we often fail to take time to

the Bank that’s Close to home.
“When we finally decided on this project, we knew it had to be this summer. We knew we wanted to do something for Xavier, and we actually chose now because it was our last summer of freedom,” Waters said. “I think as a group we can all say we view it as more of an opportunity than a commitment. We have an opportunity to go out and make a positive impact on people every day all summer and put smiles on people’s faces, just as Xavier did. Not many people get that chance to go out and do what we’re doing, and we are extremely excited about it.” Clark agreed, but while the men see it more as an opportunity, Clark recognizes the project is not without its sacrifices. “We understand that financially it’s not beneficial compared to most kids taking summer jobs and making money, but we understand that it can be even more beneficial in so many different ways. Xavier deserves the attention and honor that this would bring to him because of the wonderful life he lived. I wanted to make a difference and have an impact on others’ lives. Now I’ll be able to do both. It’s a big time commitment, but it will not only make me become a better man for my future but also spread the impact Xavier had on everyone, hopefully causing a ripple effect of good deeds by sharing the love Xavier had for life.”

look at ourselves. This project will allow us to look at certain characteristics of Xavier that people loved so much and reflect on how we can make changes in our own lives to improve upon areas where we’re lacking. I also hope to become more selfless and go out of my way to help people more often.

FEED YOUR HOUSEHOLD LIKE A MASTER CHEF WITHOUT THE HASSLE Writer / Pete Walkey . Photographer / Keeley Miller
Fresh Artistry is a service that delivers locally designed recipes and fresh preportioned ingredients to your home. They help you make chef-grade meals for your family without the hassle. Founder Tom Blessing (IU grad and former investment banker in New York City) grew frustrated with his lifestyle. For three years, he worked long hours and lived off
restaurant food. His third year, he gained 20 pounds, felt terrible and needed to make some changes. After wishing a service existed that would help him cook fresh meals quickly and easily at home, he quit his job, moved back to the motherland and started Fresh Artistry. He designed Fresh Artistry for the busy household who wants an easy way to eat
exceptional, fresh, nutritious meals around the table at home. He fully believes the idea that meals are best shared with each other, so he built a service that helps busy people do that. The way it works is you set up your account online. Then you just sit back and watch spectacular recipes show up on your doorstep. They deliver once per week with three recipes per box.
44 / GEIST COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER / JUNE 2015 / atGeist.com
Each week, there is a menu of seven new recipes to choose from. You can select three recipes per week or be surprised and have them selected for you. You can login and customize each delivery or put it on autopilot. There’s a Sunday midnight deadline to customize your menu for the week. They studied a group of Indiana families to test this out. On average, the families ate at home five times per week, and the two-person households ate at home four times per week. They figure two times per week are either leftovers, pizza or “get dinner on your own.” They want to help with the remaining three times per week when you want to eat together. Your delivery arrives in an insulated box with refrigerated gel packs via a delivery service. If you’re not home when it arrives, no problem. They include enough refrigerant to last overnight on your porch without issue. Tom values the freshness and ingredient control of cooking but is extremely sensitive to convenience. They target recipes made in 30 minutes start to finish because their customers want to look like a master chef to their family without time-consuming prep on the front end. Many of their fresh vegetables come prechopped and spices pre-blended, and recipes are simplified and tested.
They add value by delivering ingredients, organizing all the ingredients and helping customers experience the expertise of a master chef. They targeted $5-$6 per serving. Their research revealed that a family of five might spend $150-$200 per week on groceries, so they wanted to fit into that budget. While there are cheaper ways to feed families, there isn’t an easier way to get fresh,
chef-grade meals on the table at home. Joining Tom on Fresh Artistry’s management team is Brian Carriger and Chef Nick Carter. Nick has been the chef for Wolfgang Puck Catering and Black Swan Brewpub and currently is an Adjunct Professor at Ivy Tech Culinary School. Visit freshartistry.com to learn more.
Proven expertise for uncertain markets.
The ingredients are locally grown when possible. They source Indiana-grown beef and poultry through Moody’s Butcher Shop. No hormones, preservatives or antibiotics are ever added. Their produce is frequently organic, local when possible and always fresh. It’s restaurant grade. The cost for their two-serving plan is $19.99 per meal ($59.97 per box of three recipes). Their family plan is $29.99 per meal ($89.97 per box of three recipes) and feeds two adults and two to three children. They chose this pricing because it’s nestled right between the price customers might pay going out to eat (higher) and the price they pay getting their food from the grocery and doing everything themselves.

SECURITY CAMERAS COMING TO GEIST HARBOURS Writer / Tom Britt
Surveillance cameras mounted atop decorative light poles like this one shown here will be installed at three high-traffic locations in Geist Harbours this summer.
In the early ’80s, homes being built on Geist Reservoir were subject to vandals and thieves with little police protection out in the “burbs.” Geist Harbours Property Owners Association (“GHPOA”) hired a private police department to provide 24/7 patrols of the culde-sacs and streets called Neighborhood Patrol (now called Geist Patrol). As the development increased to 2,380 homes, Geist Patrol expanded their coverage to include other Geist area communities such as Cambridge, Sail Place, Geist Marina Village and even Hamilton Proper. GHPOA formed a new Security Committee in 2014 which negotiated a new contract with Geist Patrol, providing significant annual savings on security costs. Those savings are now earmarked to augment police patrols with surveillance cameras at major intersections leading in and out of our neighborhoods. Up to three cameras are to be installed this summer to pilot the program with several more scheduled to be added in 2016. The Committee is working closely with Geist Patrol and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department to identify the best practices and vendors to install and maintain an effective video surveillance strategy.
As a result of the new contract, residents may notice some changes in the Geist Patrol service provided, including: 1. FIVE 8-HOUR PATROLS PER DAY INSTEAD OF SIX. Statistics from local police municipalities and run reports from Geist Patrol showed far fewer calls during certain times of the week/day which could be easily covered by one officer versus two. 2. MARKED POLICE CARS INSTEAD OF GEIST PATROL CARS. Officers are using their issued patrol cars, giving the patrols more presence in the neighborhood and the ability to enforce traffic violations. 3. TACT SHIFTS UTILIZED. At the direction of the Security Committee, Geist Patrol will ramp up patrols and put more officers on the streets during statistically high-crime windows of time (i.e., July 4th weekend, Christmas holidays and ad hoc crime sprees that occur). All area residents are encouraged to lock their car doors in the driveway, keep their homes locked and keep garage doors closed. Follow Geist Patrol on Twitter for updates and alerts in the area @ GeistPatrol. You can also stay up-to-date by visiting their website at GeistPatrol.com or call 317-842-8082.

ARCADIA LOUVERED LUXURY ROOFS ENHANCE OUTDOOR LIVING
Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies
In Indiana, we seem to have a fickle relationship with the weather. We love it, and then without warning, it changes, and well, not so much. But what if there was a way to enhance the seasons and extend your ability to spend more time outside without requiring moving or traveling? What if at the push of a button, you could protect yourself from the heat of the sun, have protection from hot or cold temperatures and shelter from a rain shower, and not have to move a single thing or reschedule? Sound too good to be true? Not anymore! Louvered Roofs have arrived! Arcadia Midwest was started by Carmel residents Claudio and Anna Bertolini to
bring the Arcadia Adjustable Louvered Roof system to the Midwest. Claudio spent his career in the medical device industry and was looking for a change. One of his former coworkers began working with the company and invited them to the headquarters in Atlanta to consider owning a distributorship. After visiting the company, they were invited to dine with the owners in an upscale sushi restaurant in downtown Atlanta on a hot 98 degree day. Their hosts invited them to eat outdoors, but they wanted nothing to do with the idea. As an Arcadia client, the louvered roof opened, the fans began to whirl and then the temperature dropped 20 degrees in a matter of seconds. They were so impressed and immediately recognized a need for the product in central Indiana. Arcadia Midwest was born.
