Murphy's PubHouse I
f you haven’t already discovered the gem of a place called Murphy’s PubHouse, nestled in the strip mall on the northeast corner of 116th Street and Olio Road, you’re in for a surprise! First off, let’s just say NO SMOKING. No need to worry about your hair or clothes reeking of smoke when you get home! You can’t help but notice the friendly owners, Ryan & Craig Stonebraker, whose philosophy is “get to know your customers, embrace the community, and treat your employees like family.” They possess a boyish enthusiasm about everything from the food they serve to the customers who visit them. You’ll meet these owners once, and they’ll remember you the next time you stop in – guaranteed – or your next meal is on the house. Okay, we exaggerated that a tad!

We’ve noticed the customers here are really varied. On one side of this PubHouse you’ll find the family-friendly restaurant, and on the other side you’ll find the bar. It’s at the bar where we noticed the eclectic clientele. At one table, you might find Lacrosse moms discussing the night’s game. At another table, you might find a group of neighbors discussing politics. At the bar, you’ll find people who came in with others or by themselves. The one thing you’ll appreciate is being able to hang out at a place where you can hear yourself talk because there’s no blaring music. And you might like a place that doesn’t make you feel like you’re in the middle of a pick-up zone. To you singles out there – don’t let that keep you away…lol! This place is homey, fun, and comfortable – a neighborhood hangout serving up great food and spirits. On the night we visited, we were bellied up to the bar chatting away with the ever-so-funny bartender Dennis Bowling. If you’ve ever met Dennis, you’re sure to remember him and his signature deep hearty laugh. He’s an outgoing character with a sarcastic flare always ready to engage in conversation. We asked him to fix us up with some specialties, and he served some beautiful martinis that were unforgettable! The first was his Salted Caramel Martini drizzled with chocolate and caramel sauces on the inside and outside of the glass rimmed with salt. Drinking this martini, OMG nothing like it! Your top lip tastes the
salt and your bottom one tastes the caramel – now give me a drink! DELICIOUSNESS!! Oh wait! Were we not supposed to have dessert first?! Oopsie – well how about the next martini, The Drunk Shrimp. It’s an appetizer in a glass! The seasoned salted rim welcomes you to a martini that somewhat tastes like a Bloody Mary. The kicker with this martini is the jumbo horseradish-stuffed shrimp skewered along side a jalapeño-stuffed green olive. Wow! This drink really should be classified as an appetizer – YUM! While enjoying our cocktails, we couldn’t help but notice the older gentleman sitting next to us in the big red IU jacket. He was watching the #1 Hoosiers on one of the bar’s many TV screens. As we struck up a conversation with Frank, we learned that his son had just passed away the day prior. Frank didn’t want to be home alone. Murphy’s seemed to be the best place for him that night. He spoke to us about his son and seemed to appreciate being able to share a few stories with strangers. On the other side of us was a girl who had just graduated from Ball State in December. She had just learned that day that she had gotten a job, and she wanted to celebrate! We also met Gary Politan a 25-year patron of the local Murphy’s restaurants, enjoying a spinach salad with a beautiful piece of grilled salmon laden with bacon bits and pecans. We wanted to dive right into that salad,

mushrooms, tomato, red onion, and provolone cheese served with a teriyaki Parmesan sauce. The Ham and Cheese Pretzel Panini…WOW, we could have that every day!!
but unfortunately, Gary wasn’t offering us even a bite. Fortunately, the luck of the Irish was with us and the owner brought us some food of our own: Char Grilled North Atlantic Salmon, 4 ounces of mmm mmm good with sautéed teriyaki veggies. This large appetizer could easily be a noguilt dinner! We’ve never seen a salmon teriyaki appetizer anywhere. It was tender and flaky, and we would definitely get it again. We also tried two of Murphy’s favorites – their Portabella Panini Melt and their Ham and Cheese Pretzel Panini. We had eaten the Portabella Panini here before, and we had already recommended it to friends. It’s a grilled wheat panini with seasoned and grilled Portabella
As if the great food, great atmosphere, and great drinks weren’t enough to get you to try this new establishment, Murphy’s has a three-day St. Patrick’s Day event coming to you March 15-17. Would you expect any less from a place called Murphy’s?!? There will be a huge tent party, beer trucks galore, kid-friendly by day, and adult party by night. Nashville recording artist and Indiana’s own Corey Cox will be performing, too! For more details, check out Murphy’s PubHouse on Facebook or go to www.murphyspubhouse.com. A quick little note about us. We’ve been friends for twelve years. Our families have traveled together and spent holidays together. We know we’re lucky that we have husbands who support our social calendars (of course, they really don’t have much of a choice). We love the Geist area, and we look forward to sharing our experiences with you! If you know of a place that you think should be featured in atGeist, contact us at girls@atGeist.com. Consider joining us the night we cover your suggestion! See you next month, and remember to follow us if you want to know where it’s @!!!

Former bob knight assistant leads lady wildcats | Kara Reibel
Let’s Hear It for the Girls! The long-established boys basketball program at LN is accustomed to a high level of attention and hype. Now, LN has another basketball team to cheer about: The girls! The Lady Wildcats won the division title this season (7-0 in conference play) as well as the Marion County Championship. It is the first time in school history that both those titles were celebrated in the same season. Although this is his first year as the head coach of the Lady Wildcats, Christopher Giffin has been with the LN boys basketball program with Coach Jack Keefer for the last nine years. Giffin grew up on the west side of town and graduated from Ben Davis High School. Before coming to LN, Giffin was a student-manager at Indiana University under Coach Bobby Knight. Giffin then followed Knight to Texas Tech where he served on the coaching staff as a graduate assistant. “It was an awesome experience to learn under such an amazing coach,” said Giffin of Knight. “I have always had a great passion and love for the game itself and, specifically, teaching it and watching and helping young men and women develop. I am competitive and thus enjoy the yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily challenges that putting teams together requires,” says Giffin. Giffin’s coaching staff shares his passion for the game. His coaches are a diverse group with experiences playing and coaching at the high school, collegiate, and semi-professional levels.
Giffin began his student teaching at Lawrence North in 2002. He instructs Life Skills in the Special Education Department dealing with students who have moderate to severe disabilities. This only adds to his strength of character. The Lady Wildcats have a strong future as well. Only one of two seniors is able to play. Hannah Farley is out with an injury leaving Mikale Rogers as the lone senior on the court. “Farley, in spite of her injuries preventing her to play on the court, is contributing in the locker room, at team meetings, and has been as committed as anyone to the team,” commented Giffin. “Mikale Rogers has been an incredible leader her senior year, leading by mouth and example,” says Giffin. This leaves a strong support group for Giffin to work with in the coming years. These girls are driven, focused, and apparently rather bright. The team accumulated GPA is 3.5. This statistic makes Giffin most proud. “The entire team is made of leaders – both on the court and in the classroom,” says Giffin. When asked of the future, Giffin’s plans for his team are “to establish and maintain one of – if not THE – premier high school girls basketball programs in the state of Indiana that has as its foundation strong academics, strong individual and team character, and winning.” And winning is what they are doing, on and off the court. Kara Reibel, owner of Geist Pilates, has been a fitness professional for over 25 years. She is the mother of 3 kids and lives in the Geist area.

Better Options. Healthier Legs | J. Andy Murphy How often do you ask questions when visiting your primary care doctor or medical specialist about the important aspect of how they record and communicate your medical records between offices, hospitals and insurance providers or what’s new in technology that benefits you as a patient? These are questions most patients never think to ask, but are really an important element in your personal healthcare.
Communication Electronic medical record systems (EMRs) are now part of the 21st century medical office process allowing quick communication and documentation concerning patient diagnosis of problem(s), direct prescription pharmacy delivery of needed medications, and important documentation reports to insurance providers as well. Records are easy to update, from the front office clear through to the patient examination room. Dr. Jeffery Schoonover (Founder of Indiana Vein Specialists), is pleased to be leading the way to the goal of achieving a near total “paperless” EMR office operation. “We are excited with the incredible advancements in medical technology,” Dr. Schoonover said, “Not only with patient communication systems through the EMR, but with the non-surgical laser treatment advancements in varicose vein disease and related disorders,” he said.
in real time, how their own veins are working as we enter the diagnostic ultrasound process together. And once the problem is identified, patients can indeed watch the medical procedure on screen as we address their vein problem. When patients have this kind of understanding, it reduces so much of the anxiety related to vein treatment,” he added. Indiana Vein Specialists understands that you have a choice for vein care in Central Indiana. They are locally owned and committed to the area. They are also invested in bringing each patient the best and most up-to-date vein care available. A sampling of their services would include: Endovenous Laser Treatment, Cosmetic Sclerotherapy, Therapeutic Sclerotherapy, Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy, Microphlebectomy, Surface Laser Spider Vein Treatment, and Diagnostic Ultrasound Vein Mapping. Dr. Jeffery Schoonover and his associates are shining examples of a medical practice that delivers A+ care and communication and advanced technology to patients who seek relief from painful vein disease. J. Andy Murphy is a published author and works as a literary agent for regional writers. She serves as the Executive Director of the WriteStuff Writers Conferences and Events.

“Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is an exciting example of how the advancement of new technology benefits our patients. Using the newest generation VenaCure EVLT treatment system generally takes less than one hour. This cutting edge system allows better targeting of varicose vein segments with significantly reduced bruising. Patients can usually resume normal activities immediately with minimal discomfort. The success rate of the VenaCure EVLT procedure is also measurably better than the alternatives of surgical ligation or stripping.” Left to right: Maggie Haley, Nurse Sclerotherapist - Diana Clauson, Scheduling Coordinator “Another important benefit of the technology we - Natalie Gilman, Practice Administrator - Dr. Jeffery Schoonover - Nathan Watson, Registered Vascular Ultrasound Technologist - Dona Rice, Registered Vascular Ultrasound have at our office is that patients are able to see, Technologist - Kahla Grace, Clinical Liaison M A R C H 2 0 1 3 | geist C O M M U N I T Y N E W S L E T T E R 15 Geist_March_2013.indd 15

Change of Scenery for 2013
Before
| Donna Marino No matter how long you’ve lived in your home, it’s always fun to shake things up a little bit – and what better time to think about giving one, two, or even three rooms in your home a brand new makeover! A fresh new look will definitely have a positive impact on every single person who lives in your home. Just think about the enjoyment you would derive by sharing something new for your friends, family and guests to admire! Here are just a few ideas to help you get started on your makeover!
Color Your World: If you’re living in an all-white or beige world, then nothing will spark your room’s makeover faster than color! Perhaps it’s just one simple accent wall painted a dramatic and exciting color. Maybe a new piece of art will find a new home over your fireplace mantle adding color and spice to your family room. Replacing a worn area rug that’s seen better days with a new textured multi-colored area rug might “fit the bill” perfectly. Nothing adds more instantaneous drama and pizzazz to you room’s entire décor than color!
Rearrange: Although new furniture definitely gives any home an instant facelift, often times it’s not something new you crave but perhaps simply a new furniture arrangement plan. Have you considered 18
geist c o m m u n i t y
Geist_March_2013.indd 18
newsletter
transferring pieces from one room to another? Have you tried angling your larger furniture pieces? Have you considered adding a new accent table or two? Maybe reupholstering that chair or sofa will do the trick. Frequently, small changes can make the biggest impact.
Light: Unfortunately, improper and inadequate room lighting is very common. Few things can rekindle our spirits on a gray, rainy, or snowy day like a home’s interior bathed in warm light. In fact, good artificial lighting is known to have such a positive effect on one’s moods that some consider it preventive medicine. When developing a lighting plan, you first need to take stock of what types of activities you enjoy in each room you’re considering making over. Then call in a professional decorator to help determine the best lighting plan to accommodate your activities. So, if a few rooms in your home are crying for a facelift, there’s no better time than NOW to begin the process. You, your family, and your home will definitely benefit from a brand new look! Looking for Your Core?
| Tracey Meister
Over the last 3 years, I have noticed a trend in my clients’ desire to train their “core.” How many times have you encountered the word “core” as it relates to your body or exercises you should be doing for your body? Many times, right? So much so you may feel a little silly asking someone to explain what the heck it is and where can it be found? So let me help clarify…or not?! Guess what? As a personal trainer, a patient of various cycles of physical therapy, and a seeker of knowledge, I have confirmed that there isn’t agreement among those who research the core, those who treat the core (therapists), and those who train the core (personal trainers).
Which muscles comprise the core? From what I have gathered in my research (including Wikipedia), many experts agree that major component muscles include the abs, pelvic floor, back, and diaphragm muscles (diagram below). However, the core also recruits many more muscles including the glutes, hamstrings, and shoulders.
nor arched. Stiffened, strong cores provide the foundation of stability, balance, and energy transfer for the entire body. Think about standing tall to walk, bracing (tightening) the core pillar muscles to perform a plank exercise (coming in Core- Part 2), or bending down. A great example is a “base” cheerleader becoming stiff to serve as the foundation of a stunt.
Dynamic Strength So a strong core is one which remains stiff when called upon to balance and transfer energy from one part of the body to another in a balanced and systematic sequence. Understand that trunk rotation or movement is often included in transferring energy/force. I can’t think of an athlete in motion that doesn’t need to be able to transfer energy from his/her arms and legs to kick, throw, plant, tackle, strike, plié, swing, etc., in a sequenced pattern. Everyday housework and yard work are included, by the way. So if there is a weak link during systematic movement, problems may occur (that’s a whole other topic). So how to strengthen your core? To be continued…. Tracey Meister is a Purdue grad, has served as a consultant for USA Gymnastics’ Tyson Fitness Challenge, and a personal trainer for the past 9 years.

Why do I need to know? The most important role of the core is creating stiffness (static stability) by stopping, holding, and controlling motion in the trunk AND then systematically reacting to the force (dynamic movement) created by moving arms and legs. “The core is designed to be a spring to store and recover elastic energy,” says Stuart McGill, BPE, MEd, PhD, professor of spine biomechanics at the University of Waterloo in Canada, and author of Low Back Disorders: Evidencebased Prevention and Rehabilitation (Human Kinetics, 2007).
Static Strength The goal of making the core stiff is to protect the organs and the spinal cord in its most neutral posture — neither flexed

councillor connection | Neal G. Moore One result of last November’s election is new leadership for the Lawrence City Council. The Geist Community Newsletter met recently with newlyelected Council President Tom Shevlot, 50, and second-term Council Vice President Sherron Freeman, 57, to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the city’s 46,000 residents and its government leaders. The following are their responses to the most pressing issues.
Revenue and Budgeting Shevlot (R) at-Large Councillor: We need stability from a fiscal perspective 30

in local government. Local government is funded primarily with property taxes, and the past couple of years have been a challenge. Our priority is to get a handle on projecting revenues accurately. Our primary responsibility is budgetary: getting expenses under control and revenue forecasting. You have to adjust the way you run your organization. Freeman (D) District 3: Because of property-tax caps, we now have only a set (reduced) amount of money coming into the city. Another drawback is the more than 36,000 property-assessment appeals filed. That money is tied up until those appeals run their course. To me, they should have just left property
taxes alone. The funds would have been there for us to do other things such as a library. We can’t jack up fees because we want people and businesses to remain in Lawrence. Shevlot: If we continue thinking we’re going to get incremental revenue increases from property taxes, that’s unlikely because the last couple years we’ve gotten less. I have ideas about new revenue sources, but the council is limited in what it can do about them. Ultimately, it’s the administration that has to execute them. I believe they are moving that way. I can’t discuss it yet, but there are two new funding options that would not require more taxes.

president are, for the most part, on the same page. “So much is thrown at us, and the way we complement each other seems to be working.”
Shevlot: Public safety is more than 70 percent of the city’s expenses. Bloomington has only 32,000 residents and more police officers than Lawrence. The same is true for Richmond and Columbus. The challenge is that funding has to be appropriated across all the city’s 300 employees. We have to do a better job of creating alternate sources of revenue. We can’t do local government “as usual” anymore because we now have experience with how cities are being funded with reduced property-tax revenue, and it’s not meeting expenses. There comes a time when you can’t cut any more without getting into public safety, so my hope is we can find new funding sources that are sustainable.
"The public doesn’t care about a ‘D’ or a ‘R’ – they just want to know what you’re going to do positive for the city."

A Kitchen Redo!
Kitchen Redo | Pat Carlini When the Hay family decided to update the kitchen in their Geist home, they knew they would have to address the kitchen cabinets. “They were kind of a mess,” says Sue Hay. I wasn’t sure exactly what…but, I knew something had to be done with the cabinets!” The Hays, who have lived throughout the Midwest and East Coast, enjoy their spacious kitchen which overlooks a 34

mixes the paint to match your kitchen, often focusing on one accent such as the cambria countertops in the case of the Hay family kitchen.
The Hays collaborated with Lisa (Designs by Lisa)and decided to paint the kitchen cabinets and stain the island a whole new color. “Painting your kitchen cabinets is a great way to update your kitchen,” says Lisa. "It is an effective way to give your kitchen a new look, and it is done at a fraction of the cost of replacing them with brand new cabinets.” Lisa says she custom
The Hays thought they would lighten and brighten the upper cabinets with old world white paint and a warm gold glaze and do the island in a contrasting espresso finish. Topped off with new brushed nickel hardware, this kitchen would take on a new look in no time. The process starts with the removal of all cabinet doors and drawers and hardware. They are painted off site with

Then, the frame of the kitchen cabinetry, the nooks, shelves, and the island are all painted on site. The process takes a few days, then the newly-painted cabinet doors are returned to the kitchen where Lisa glazes the doors and drawers by hand on site. Then the new hardware goes on, and this kitchen looks brand new with lighter, brighter cabinets and a darker, warmer island! In just a few days’ time, a kitchen can get a whole new look without tearing out the existing cabinets. Always check on painting your kitchen before deciding what you have needs to go!

Barb Austin, a self-proclaimed professional volunteer, has been working on this year's "Light Their Future Celebration" to be held on March 15 in Castleton.
Professional Volunteer Barb Austin leads a platoon of Lawrence Township Foundation volunteers to "Light Their Future" | J. Andy Murphy Mark your calendars for March 15! If you live in Lawrence Township, you have heard the name of one Barb Austin. This dynamic woman is known as a tireless event volunteer professional who goes above and beyond the midnight hours needed to make any event successful. The Light Their Future Celebration, benefiting the Lawrence Township School Foundation (LTSF), is one event you don’t want to miss. Twenty Lawrence Township schools benefit from this special fund raiser. Austin explains that many new and fun elements have been created to generate an exciting and educational theme for this year’s event.
“The Foundation’s mission is to connect philanthropy and education to provide the resources needed for all children in Lawrence Township schools to excel. The possibilities for our schools are endless,” stated Cori Korn, executive director of the Lawrence Township School Foundation. “It’s such an honor to support such a strong, vibrant school district,” Korn added with obvious pride. Serving as the Honorary Chair is Belzer Middle School Principal Troy Knoderer who has served the district in various roles for 20 years. “Every school in the Lawrence District will create 2 table centerpieces that individually showcase their school. It should be very educational for our guests to come and learn about their wonderful school district,” Knoderer said.
Let’s get behind this vital Lawrence Township School Foundation Celebration to make this year’s event the most successful ever! It’s one way to support the schools and the community you live in. It’s certainly a fun way to get involved with a true celebration! dealing with dyslexia kids. Years later, when the connection to this learning disorder was correctly diagnosed, a huge weight was lifted and the process of working through certain staggering elements of this disability was put in place. Today, I know that at least 20% of the population has dyslexia. This means that at least one of your friends, family members, or coworkers is currently dealing with dyslexia and its challenges. For almost a quarter of a century, the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana (DII) has existed to serve children, adolescents, and adults with specific learning disabilities. Beginning with the student at the center, DII serves elements of the community that touch the life of the student. DII provides skills, services, and strategies that enable individuals to attain their full potential by learning to manage the challenges of dyslexia and benefit from its advantages. As a person who has dyslexia, I can share that it has affected my life in many subtle ways. As a child with what today has been identified as a mild level of dyslexia, there were many issues that were difficult for me in the learning process. I knew I was capable, but some simple tasks were overly complicated for reasons I did not understand at that time in my life, as the word “dyslexia” had not been entered into the diagnostic world of learning disabilities. Math was hard and complicated. Transposing numbers and memorizing formulas was overwhelming. Studying another language was difficult, and sounding out unfamiliar words didn’t work for me as, at that time, I didn’t have the learning tools to work through the sounds and pronunciation necessary to master this task. If I 44

heard it pronounced correctly, I had to memorize the sound and repeat it out loud over and over again. Although my grades were usually in the A’s and B’s, my timed test scores did not match my ability to show that I, indeed, knew the subject. It took me longer to whip through a 30-minute paper test than the other kids. I have to admit, in those early days before dyslexia had a name, I always felt that in certain subjects I simply could not compete with other
Beyond academic success, DII promises each student the ability to minimize fear, develop confidence, and celebrate success. Dyslexia does not just affect performance in school or the workplace – it can hinder self esteem, social skills, and the ability to reach one’s true potential.
The term dyslexia refers to a cluster of systems that result in people having difficulty with specific language skills, particularly reading, spelling, written expression, and pronouncing words. Other problems experienced by individuals with dyslexia include: • Learning to speak • Organizing written and spoken language • Learning letters and their sounds • Memorizing number facts • Spelling • Reading • Learning a foreign language • Correctly doing math operations It’s important to note that not all individuals who exhibit these systems are dyslexic. Formal testing is the only way to confirm a diagnosis of suspected dyslexia.

The following information serves as a guideline for recognizing systems that might be related to this learning disability. Signs of dyslexia in young, preschool children include talking later than expected, a slowness to add new words, difficulty rhyming, and trouble following multistep directions. After a child begins school, the signs of dyslexia include: • Difficulty reading single words, such as a word on a flashcard • Difficulty learning the connection between letters and sounds • Confusing small words, such as “at” and “to” • Letter reversals, such as “d” for “b” • Word reversals, such as “tip” for “pit” • Inserting or deleting small words like “not” Having one of these signs does not mean your child has dyslexia; many children reverse letters before the age of 7. But, if several signs exist and reading problems persist, or if you
have a family history of dyslexia, you may want to have your child evaluated. The earlier a parent sees what might be a presenting problem with their child’s learning ability, the better.
learning. Today with the wonderful research and commitment of DII, children have the tools for learning and accomplishing tasks that were beyond my time. What a blessing this is!
Many years ago when I was a child, I couldn’t exactly explain why I had trouble with certain elements of

DII Program Descriptions Wells Tutoring provides one-on-one multisensory instructional services to children and adults with dyslexia. Through this program, students increase their knowledge and understanding of phonics and spelling, improve their study skills, and – most rewarding – improve their ability to read independently. Testing is comprised of a complete educational evaluation consisting of a comprehensive battery of standardized tests and takes approximately 4 hours. Testing at DII helps individuals to understand their learning strengths and needs and is done by a Certified School Psychologist.

Lakeside Changes at Bella Vita | J. Andy Murphy Henri and Shelley Najem chose the name Bella Vita, which means Beautiful Life, for their Geist restaurant when they opened at Brooks School Road and Fall Creek in 1998. They were happy to find a location where they could realize their dream of operating a restaurant and work together; Henri in the kitchen and Shelley out front with the customers. They also loved the fact that the location was situated in a growing, family-centric community and felt this would allow them to really get to know the customers that dined with them. “This has always been so important to Shelley and me,” said Henri as he reflected on those first few years at Geist. It wasn’t long until Bella Vita became the place to eat at Geist, and the small restaurant with just 180 seats soon grew to capacity crowds, especially on the weekends. When Henri heard that the Blue Herron was available, he met with the owner of the property and building Allen Rosenberg Sr. and soon the deal was closed. “You always think that bigger is better and we had to admit that the chance to expand our seating was indeed motivating.”
last several years helped us realize the changes we needed to make; for our customers and for us as a team,” concluded Henri. And so the changes began. In late January, the name changed from Bella Vita Ristorante to Bella Vita Lakeside announcing a more casual dining experience and atmosphere to come. Next, they dropped the ceiling down from 35 feet and added beautiful new lighting and fitted 15 more new booth spaces inside the dining and bar area creating a more intimate experience. A painting of the walls decision delivered a move away from the previous earth colors to vibrant tones such as oranges and yellows, which creates a color-swatch that matches a sun setting waterfront view. “We were only closed for three days at the end of January for painting,” said Henri. “It would have made more sense to close for the entire month since January is usually slow anyways, but closing would have really hurt my staff and we just couldn’t do that to them.” A new enclosed porch with a dramatic open fireplace with flames glittering from the center of colorful stones creates a
The decision to move into a much larger space and the waterfront location was made and life changed for the Najem family. Their new Bella Vita spot boasted 500 seats in the summertime with the need to have 100 servers on board to handle the dining customers visiting during a typical busy seasonal flow. Add to that an expansive need for 25 bartenders, 40 people in the kitchen area, as well as having to add 3 managers to help in the front end of the restaurant. “We grew big, and I have to admit there was a certain amount of panic when we expanded so fast. We were now working at a whole new level of dining and trying to manage over 1,000 dinners on a Friday night alone. It was a major adjustment in food and customer volume for us,” he admitted. “You always think bigger is better, but sometimes the trade off of being big hits you with losing out on the time to enjoy both sides of the business. Shelley and I sat down last year and revisited why we love our restaurant and how we wanted to move forward. Our customers shared they missed the warmth of our old location. We also took in the comments on Yelp and Facebook, good and bad, which is not always easy to do. The experience we had gained from working 24/7 these

unique dining environment that can be opened year-round, giving customers a lakeside dining experience even when there is snow on the ground. “We have also added 10 new TV’s to our bar area as sports viewing is part of our new design. It carries a familiar ‘Cheers type’ of setting with a casual atmosphere for customers to spend time while cheering on a favorite team. We are in the middle of a wonderful neighborhood and we wanted to create a destination for sports viewing, something customers have been asking for over the years,” said Henri. Bella Vita has also made changes with new food items appealing to more tastes. You can now order American staple items such as sandwiches and great appetizers. They are testing new items such as fillet and tuna sliders that really add a new take on their healthy eating menu. One of the most popular new items on their new menus is their new fresh baked wings. The secret is in the 1,000 degree wood stone oven that allows the crispness on the skin to remain without deep oil frying. So much healthier and the taste is incredible.
‘This was fantastic meal and we really enjoyed ourselves!’ This is what makes Bella Vita a great neighborhood restaurant. Change can be hard, but it can also make a dream of owning a business that listens to its customers and evolves through experience and hectic times worth every minute of every day!” If you haven’t visited Bella Vita Lakeside lately, perhaps a visit during March Madness would be an opportune time to check out the expanded bar and try those new oven baked wings. Follow them on Twitter (@BellaVita_Geist), Facebook (/BellaVitaMarina), or visit their website at www.BellaVitaLakeside.com.
Expert investment management for portfolios of $500,000 or more.
Don’t worry; Bella Vita is still retaining their great Italian dishes such as the very popular crusted Parmesan chicken and other long-time favorites. “Shelley and I have also worked to lower our pricing as we retain our commitment to serving quality foods. Good food at affordable prices with the same great view,” Henri stated as he spoke of all the changes. Henri and Shelley’s commitment also extends to their entire staff. Recognizing that most diners base their satisfaction on not just the food but indeed the service, they have put in place a personalized training program for their servers that help with the learning curve for those workers who are seasonal in nature. Key ingredient is training Bella Vita servers to Henri and Shelley’s expectations, not their previous experience. Most of Bella Vita’s kitchen staff has been with Henri and Shelley for over 8 years. They are like a family and all are involved in making Bella Vita a wonderful place to go for a lovely experience every time you visit. Henri says in closing, “For all of us, we are renewed when a customer says, 48

For those in attendance at the Vines for Life Wine Tasting Event, the speech given by 9 year-old Luke Andritsch from Team Luke was the highlight of the evening. Several people have asked for a copy of his speech, so by request, here is his speech in it's entirety. MARCH 2013 |

Conversation about embracing state-of-the-art mass transit IMS for central Indiana is nothing new. Arguments for and against BEN DAVIS AVON significantly upgrading IndyGo, the Indianapolis ZOO bus system, and IUPUI MICHIGAN ST developing an integrated light rail system to connect adjacent DOWNTOWN counties, have been going on for a couple of decades now. The stumbling blocks have always been a combination of finding the money to pay for it; an “it’s not our problem” attitude by xenophobic elected officials; and the lack of political will to make somethingAIRPORT happen. Meanwhile, peer cities like Austin, Salt Lake City, Nashville and Charlotte have moved forward with transit systems of varying kind to transport commuters in their increasingly congested metropolitan areas. Now, proponents 465 believe it’s time central Indiana punched its transit ticket.

likely double in the next 20-30 years. “We can’t build our way out of this with more roads,” he emphasized. Initially, the current bus system would be expanded, eventually tripling the level of services. Five rapid transit lines have been identified, including what planners call the Green Line (also known as the Nickel Plate Line) – an existing rail bed that snakes it’s way from Noblesville, past the Fishers train station, and into downtown Indianapolis. Gifford credited forward-thinking Fishers leaders (The Hoosier Heritage Port Authority) who, some 20 years ago, bought the rail bed and designated it for future transit use. Gifford emphasized that proposed rail service would be nothing like the State Fair Train rumbling in and out of Fishers each August. Instead, planners are eyeing electric-powered rail cars with rubber wheels to provide a quieter, more environmentallyfriendly experience for commuters, and the businesses and residences located along transit corridors. Gifford said mass transit in other cities has had direct economic impact: where commuter stations are located, business has followed. A proposed funding mechanism would be adoption of what planners call EDIT – Economic Development Income Tax. A three-tenths of one percent increase in income taxes would pay for and maintain the proposed system. That calculates to about ten to fifteen dollars a month for a family of four earning $50,000 annually. “One of the bigger challenges we have is talking to people about why this is an investment that makes

sense. Why should we increase our local tax to pay for this?” said Gifford. “In the current political environment, that’s a tough conversation for some people. In our view it’s really important that this go to local referendum – that the public be allowed to weigh in on this. Ultimately we think a fully informed public will value the investment and vote in favor of it.” A necessary step in making this happen are changes to Indiana law that would provide funding flexibility at local levels of government, and a referendum allowing public voting on the proposal. At the time of this writing, a bill addressing these changes is winding its way through the Indiana General Assembly. Renee Cox, District 3 representative on the Fishers Town Council, is closely watching the legislative developments.
“We have seen, for the first time, a (mass transit) bill come out of committee, and that’s encouraging,” she said. “If we’re going to continue to sell business development for Hamilton County, a good transit system is vital to its success. We’re talking about planning for the future.” Cox thinks the jury is still out on the proposed tax increase. People she has talked with express concern if it would be enough funding for sustainability, fearing future, additional tax hikes. Still, when asked about mass transit, she’s fond of quoting Indiana State Senator Jerry Torr: “We gave the people the Right to Work; now we need to give them a way to get to work.” Her hope is that people will put aside preconceived notions about mass transit, including rumors and misinformation, and come to the conversation with open eyes. “The real beneficiaries are those still to come – people who choose to live, work and play in Fishers and other central Indiana communities,” emphasized Cox. Planners have designated 2013 as a year for discussion about the Central Indiana Transit Plan. Detailed information is available at www.indyconnect.org. Future community conversations are planned across the metro area.

Tricia felt frustrated and stuck in “dead-end jobs.” Now she’s got a great career, new confidence, and a brain she says is “working differently.”
LEARNINGRX: THE APPLIED SCIENCE OF NEUROPLASTICITY Neuroscientists tell us that the brain is “plastic,” meaning it can be molded and changed. Every day, your actions (and even your thoughts!) stimulate your brain to make changes in both structure and function. This amazing ability is called neuroplasticity, and your brain can do it no matter how old you are. What this means is that, given the right stimuli, your brain can be prompted to strengthen, expand or even reroute the neural connections that make up your core brain skills and determine your IQ. At LearningRx, our certified brain trainers work oneon-one with clients aged 5 to 105, using intense mental exercise to stimulate these kinds of changes in the brain. The changes—as you can see from the charts above— are dramatic. More importantly, they create life changing improvements in how the brain thinks, reads, learns, reasons, remembers and even pays attention. 56 56

SPOTLIGHT ON READING STRUGGLES
“NO WONDER MY SON WAS FRUSTRATED AND ANGRY!” We took away his cell phone. Then his car. But nothing we did motivated our son Dillon to study more or do better in school. Despite all our efforts, he just couldn’t do it. It hurt to listen to him read, or to watch him struggle for hours over homework. By the time Dillon reached high school, he seemed ticked off most of the time. He was acting out in class. He was disrespectful at school and at home. I’d tell him to study for a test and he’d refuse, saying, “I don’t have to study. I understood the homework.” But how was I supposed to believe him when he failed every test? The turning point came when we got him tested at LearningRx. Suddenly everything made sense! One of Dillon’s brain skills called auditory processing was really weak, ranking in the ninth percentile. And since auditory processing is foundational for reading, no wonder homework took forever! His long-term and working memory skills were also weak. In other words, he’d been telling us the truth! He really had understood the concepts as he learned them; he just couldn’t hang on to them. No wonder my son was frustrated and mad at the world. And we had not only doubted what he’d been telling us, we’d accused him of being lazy! Within weeks of starting brain training, Dillon
was spending less time on homework. Midway through the program, we saw C’s and D’s turning into A’s and B’s. But what I really loved was that Dillon became happier and more confident. Suddenly he didn’t have to fight so hard. His literature teacher told me Dillon was like a completely “…what I really loved was that different kid. In chemistry, he did so well he was asked Dillon became happier and to tutor other kids. He told me, “Mom, this stuff is more confident. Suddenly he easy.” I’d never heard that didn’t have to fight so hard.” before! By the time Dillon finished the program at LearningRx, he had gained 39 percentile points in auditory processing and 33 percentile points in long-term memory. His executive processing speed—good for planning, paying attention and follow through—showed the LearningRx gets unmatched results in reading improvement because we strengthen the weak cognitive skills that biggest gain, jumping cause 88% of all reading struggles. 56 points from the 3 23rd to the 79th 3.1 Years percentile! the last 9 years, but with our recent growth and office space, we hired Alyssa Sander as our Creative Director and first employee. She’s a Ball State grad; need I say more? Moving our deadlines to the same day each month, adding new publishers to the mix, and training everyone as we go has presented some challenges, but we’re all optimistic and gelling as a team. Geist Half Marathon Our long-time event management company, Vision Event Management, severed their contract with us on February 1 without giving us a reason. Our relationship has been deteriorating over the last few years, and with their contract ending with this year’s race, they exercised their 30-day out clause in our contract. In my opinion, it was a classic case of “you can’t fire me because I quit.” Regardless, participants will not see any noticeable changes on race day. Our board has been taking on more responsibility over the last few years and we hired Planet Adventure to replace them for this year’s race and
next. They put on over 70 events annually, so rest assured that this could be our best year ever. Registrations are ahead of pace, so if you are procrastinating, sign up now at www. GeistHalf.com. Happy Hours We started hosting happy hour each Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in our new Mitford Office Suites above Eddy’s. Surprisingly, we’ve been getting anywhere from 8 to 20 people each Friday stopping by for some liquid refreshments and old-fashioned social networking. This is open to anyone; you don’t have to be a business owner or client to stop by. In fact, we’ve had several Geist-area neighbors just drop in to see the place, shake a few hands, and head downstairs for dinner. Like our “Geist Happy Hour” page on Facebook to see who is showing up each week, or just come by and see for yourself! Gary Fammartino Administrator, St.Vincent Fishers Hospital
“We asked families what they wanted in a hospital. Now we’re excited to show you the result.” The new St.Vincent Fishers Hospital opens April 8.Get a sneak peak— attend our Pre-Opening Event on March 23 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Recently, St.Vincent Medical Center Northeast asked families: What do you want in a hospital? Your response came loud and clear: You wanted a healthcare destination focused on wellness and prevention as well as medical treatment. Now it’s coming in the new St.Vincent Fishers Hospital, which includes: • 50 beautiful patient rooms, including 10 birthing suites where moms can labor, deliver and recover all in one room • More physicians providing expanded services and surgical procedures
• A warm and inviting spa-like environment with many upgraded amenities We will continue to provide fast ER care, multi-service specialists in areas including orthopedics, cardiovascular and pediatrics, a physical therapy program, and more. Come see it firsthand at our Pre-Opening Event on March 23. We’re located just off I-69 at Exit 210. We’d love to see you there.
As Indiana’s first LEED-certified hospital, St.Vincent Fishers Hospital is an eco-friendly facility.
