He also hopes that the majority of the project will be completed by July 4 for the annual Blast on the Bridge celebration. “We have been trying to meet residents to walk them through what is going on,” said Taylor. “So far, the overall feedback is positive. People are excited. We understand the pain of construction and are trying to minimize it. We have received feedback from the residents concerning the tree clearing along the project.

For 14 years, American Airlines has run their Road Warrior contest, an essay contest asking applicants to depict their adventurous lives on the road. After completing a brief survey and essay, applicants were also asked to pen a poem depicting their lifestyle and finally describe a typical two-week travel schedule.

After seeing the application on every flight for months, I went ahead and took the challenge to write about my career as a Road Warrior," Bedics says. 10 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MARCH 2016 / atGeist.com

While Bedics most assuredly has an extremely active lifestyle, entering the contest didn't necessarily mean she would be a shoo-in to win. The applicant pool, though limited to just those who are frequent fliers, included nearly 1,000 applicants with similar lifestyles. But something in her message really resonated, and Becky was selected as one of the five Road Warriors. American Way Magazine's Content Manager, Anne Weidner, says, "I was so impressed by Becky's ability to balance home life and work life – especially a work life that entails traveling literally every week of the year. Her entry was really clever and showed what a great sense of humor she has which is always a home run with me.

The way in which she described managing her dual roles showed that she's extremely organized but also has a real go-with-theflow, easy personality, which all true road warriors must have to live this kind of lifestyle successfully."

It would seem that being a successful Road Warrior has much to do with balance in the lifestyle, but Bedics has a different take on it. She says, "I think that balance is an elusive concept. Schools fill their heads with knowledge. Help us fill their tummies with food. One in four Hoosier children doesn’t have enough to eat – nearly 90,000 kids in Greater Indianapolis* alone. Gleaners Food Bank is trying to change that with our BackSacks Weekend Food for Kids program. But distributing a school year’s worth of weekend BackSacks in our entire service area comes with a cost of about $2 million. Fundraising events like Wine Women & Shoes and its sponsors help pay for this program. Yet, they’re not enough. A gift of just $20 from you provides a child with a month’s worth of weekend BackSacks. And a $100 gift provides him or her with an entire semester’s worth. Please help us fund this worthy program by making a donation today at gleaners.org

In previous years, the Women, Wine & Shoes event has been the toast of the town when it comes to feeding chronically hungry children through Gleaners BackSacks Weekend Food for Kids program. Last year’s fundraiser hosted 400 guests, targeting high income women aged 30-55+ and has raised nearly $200,000 annually to fund the Gleaners program.

California, and has become a popular sophisticated fundraising platform. The WW&S® team has managed more than 175 events and raised over $37 million for their charity partners that includes the local event benefitting Gleaners. Inspired by the classic country ballad “Wine, Women and Song,” this unique concept offers both charity and corporate clients the opportunity to leverage their successful TownePost.com / MARCH 2016 / TOWNEPOST NETWORK

platform to achieve a variety of goals from charity fundraising and cause awareness to team building and client networking. The event will boast world-class wine tastings, gourmet treats, an exclusive fashion lounge, shopping opportunities for the latest in shoe fashions, a silent auction and of course the company of the striking “Shoe Guys.” What woman could possibly resist a hunky man who knows the difference between a wedge and a platform pump? The Shoe GuysTM are one of the highlights of a WW&S® event. These attractive, fit and friendly guys may look like models, but they are men from the community who support the cause and are willing to brave a

party full of women. Jill Schuman, co-chair of the event, spoke about the collaborative efforts that go into organizing this incredible event and the purpose that continues to motivate her and her co-chairs. “We have been thrilled with the previous years’ success,” Schuman said. “It all began when Gleaners pitched the idea of teaming up with Wine, Women & Shoes, enjoying a day with our girlfriends shopping, eating and wine tasting while raising money for a good cause. It is a relaxing and enjoyable midday event that is designed to be different from a typical black-tie evening gala.” Schuman mentioned that guests will be able to experience a wide selection of wines and delectable foods from local sponsors and restaurants. There will be 10 local vendors and restaurants on-site. As another way to raise money that day, the vendors will donate back 20 percent of the purchases made by the attendees. They will also be able to participate in a variety of contests, and the most incredible raffle prize is a key to a magnificent wardrobe closet, constructed on-site by California Closets and filled with over $12,000 of merchandise, gift certificates and other incredible prizes donated by the 10 vendors at the event.

There will be 160 tickets sold at $160 per ticket, and at the end of the event, the lucky ticket holder will take home all of the prizes and the opportunity to have California Closets come to their home and build a custom closet. In the closet are hidden boxes with additional prizes such as a certificate to purchase a pair of designer shoes with the assistance of a personal shopper at Saks Fifth Avenue at the Keystone Fashion Mall and other elaborate and fun gifts. “This year’s event will feature the Saks Fashion Lounge,” Schuman added. “There will be a bar and music in this area. We will have a live auction with some incredible donated items, and we will have a presentation for our guests on the Gleaners BackSacks Weekend Food for Kids program and how the event and all of its components supports Gleaners. We will also have a ‘Fund a Need’ segment. There will be several photo opps and fun contests such as ‘Best Shoes’ and ‘Best in Dress.’” Schuman also expressed that one of the more unique and entertaining parts about the event is the presence of their Shoe Guys. “Our Shoe Guys are absolutely phenomenal,” she said. “We will have ‘shoe cards’ with each of their faces printed on the cards. Our guests will vote for their

favorite Shoe Guy, voting through the Gleaners website during the event. They can donate as little as a dollar or whatever amount that they wish. Whichever Shoe Guy wins the most votes will be honored and recognized on stage and is awarded some fun gifts. In the past, we have awarded them fun trips and even a foursome at Crooked Stick Golf Course. “I would really like to emphasize that all of our gifts and prizes are generously donated by our amazing donors and sponsors who are very supportive of this event. We couldn’t do these things without them. I also work with an amazing committee of dedicated women who are very talented and focus on making their parts of the event successful, entertaining and fun. We identify the list of things that need to be done and then we divide and conquer.” The event is supported by a plethora of community and corporate sponsors such as Moyer Fine Jewelers, Saks Fifth Avenue, Pillow Talk, Sullivan’s Steakhouse and so many more wonderful local businesses. GENDER REVEAL A

here’s an exciting new trend among expecting families called gender reveal parties. If you’re asking yourself, “What’s a gender reveal party?” then you either don’t know anyone who’s expecting, you aren’t expecting or you live under a rock. A gender reveal party is a party to find out the gender of an expecting couple’s baby. Generally, gender reveal parties lie somewhere between the pregnancy

announcement and the baby shower. Thanks to social media, this trend is exploding with some good and bad reviews, but it’s a trend that is not going anywhere any time soon. Who is doing it? A lot of people. Gender reveal parties started popping up around 2011 with a simple cake you could cut into to find out reveal the baby’s gender: blue for boy and pink for girl. What started with a small gathering of immediate families has grown to include friends, extended families TOWNEPOST NETWORK / MARCH 2016 / TownePost.com

and even the whole world. Celebrities like Snooki, Dave Annable and Carrie Underwood, just to name a few, revealed their baby’s gender on national television or video to not only tell their families but the entire world. Other celebrities have used gender reveals on their Instagram and other social media pages. If you are invited to a gender reveal party, you should expect food and games, maybe even together. Be prepared to have some

cookies or cupcakes either pink, blue or some neutral color. Games often include guessing the gender of what you think the baby might be, predicting the day of birth or learning old wives’ tales of boys versus girls. Finally, the reveal — is it a boy or a girl? If you are thinking of bringing a gift, it’s not necessary (unless it’s a shower and gender reveal in one). Thinking of throwing one? Let your sonographer know ahead of time that’s the plan, but you can always know and keep it a secret too. Bring an envelope if you don’t want to know and ask the sonographer to put the gender inside. At that point, you can give the envelope to a trusted friend or family member or give it directly to your baker/party planner. If you plan on doing a cake reveal, contact a local bakery and see if they accommodate your request.

Setting the date a month in advance for your gender reveal party is enough time for you to plan and invite guests. Decide how you want to do the reveal — Cake? Balloons? Silly string? Reveal tees? If you have something more out of the box, this is definitely the place to go for inspiration, ideas and one-of-a-kind decor. And to see what not to do, search YouTube. Whether you have been to one, think it’s ridiculous to have one, are thinking of having one for your first or your third or never heard of one, one thing is for sure — this trend is not going away. Prepare to see more Instagram reveals, YouTube videos and whatever social media platform is coming next. My advice, enjoy the cake.

A BRITISH INVASION AT GEIST Writer / Pat Carlini

Sharon Osbourne called their performance "spectacular."

You may be seeing a little more of a British band called "Next of Kin" in 2016 after the three brothers band invaded Geist over the holiday season!

"It's been a tough road for them," says Melson. "But they stuck together through it all. They just needed some good management."

The band was invited to the Geist home of Christina and John Melson who discovered the band on a Disney cruise ship last year. "We were so impressed with their music that we kept going back to see them!" laughs Christina. "Their harmonies were incredible, and we couldn't figure out why they were signed by someone!" The Melsons eventually had a chance to meet the band and hear their story. The three brothers, Nate, Mark and Kieran from Essex started playing music together during their school years and have stuck together through their 20s. In 1999, Next of Kin was destined to be the next big thing after touring with Britney Spears, Westlife and Boyzone. But they were dropped by their record label the following year, and their music career slowed to a halt.

The Melsons invited the band to their Geist home to meet friends in the entertainment business, such as local entertainment attorney Gary Sallee who may be able to help promote their music career. They were introduced at Murphy's PubHouse last November where the crowd enjoyed the band's songs and perfect harmonies. Now all the Geist support may be paying off for the British band. They received an early Christmas gift of a contract from renowned producers Dann Huff and his brother David who produce pop and country artists from Nashville to Los Angeles. This may finally be the year for "Next of Kin" who say they'll be back…after enjoying their time in Geist and help from their new friends along the way! Pat Carlini is an experienced television/radio personality associated with NBC in Indianapolis and the syndicated Bob & Tom Show. She can be contacted at patcarlini.com.

They resurfaced in 2013 with a performance on the UK's "The X Factor" where the band received a standing ovation from the judges. atGeist.com / MARCH 2016 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 27

Brandywine Creek Farms Battles Hunger and Helps Community

Writer / Matt Keating

Imagine a program to help stop hunger in Indianapolis that also encourages and helps war veterans and at-risk kids. Jonathan and Amanda Lawler have. The couple operate a special place called Brandywine Creek Farms in Greenfield. Their goal is to put an end to hunger in central Indiana, while also

helping different groups of people in need of additional assistance. Brandywine Creek Farms, located just 14 miles east of Indianapolis' city limits, is a sustainable produce farm changing to nonprofit status to address food insecurity, while empowering atrisk youth and military veterans with hands on agriculture and horticulture training.

28 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MARCH 2016 / atGeist.com

"What we do is very therapeutic for a lot of people," Jonathan Lawler said over coffee at Mama Bear's in Geist. "It gives them a feeling of being productive without any pressure, and they enjoy being outside." Brandywine Creek Farms previously operated as a for-profit business for several years and raised nearly 700,000 pounds of produce and pork.

Jonathan, executive director of Brandywine Creek Farms, said the first year goal of 500,000 pounds is a very realistic possibility based on the farm's capacity and the addition of an army of volunteers committed to helping throughout the season. "What we do is very therapeutic for a lot of people," Jonathan said. "It gives them a feeling of being productive without any pressure, and they enjoy being outside." His wife Amanda agrees. "The at-risk kids we work with are happy to be put in nature. It grounds them to see how great growing something is," she said. The at-risk kids not only learn where their food comes from and how it is grown, but the value of helping others in need.

are working side by side with someone and serving as a mentor, you can get them to open up about their problems. They know they have a friend who will listen to them and empathize." He added that working with livestock on the farm also provides educational opportunities as the kids and volunteers get to see the animals as part of the farm operation. The questions asked lead to some great conversations, and the kids end up learning a little about animal husbandry. Brandywine Creek Farms has also partnered with Gleaners Food Bank, Kenneth Butler Soup Kitchen and many other food banks in the Indianapolis area as distribution partners.

"Kids from urban areas who have really liked the program have told us they decided to go to Purdue University to study agriculture," Amanda said.

Amanda said Brandywine Creek Farms also plans to offer four intern positions to U.S. military veterans who are interested in pursuing a specialty crop agriculture operation of their own.

Jonathan noted that the kids are really looking for a second chance. "When you

reference to Leviticus 23:22. This passage reads: "When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you. I am the Lord your God." "I love that passage because the farm is Biodynamic, meaning that large stands of trees and ground cover are kept to enrich the soil and environment," Jonathan said. Organic farming methods are utilized, and everything is kept as natural as possible, while still maintaining the same production standards as a conventional farm. Wildlife such as deer, hawks, foxes and great horned owls can all be seen at Brandywine Creek Farms. Jonathan also owns a transportation consulting firm and believed he could address food insecurity after his son talked about children at school who take food home from the school pantry. "Hunger is not isolated," Jonathan stated. "It can be an issue where you do not expect it."

"Project 23:22 [is] in reference to Leviticus 23:22. This passage reads: 'When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and for the foreigner residing among you. I am the Lord your God.'" I thought about the large impact I could make if my farm's production was directed at food banks and soup kitchens instead of retail and wholesale outlets. The great thing about Brandywine is that it gives people a food education, it's an outreach program and it helps people with a limited income grow their own food." "To reach our goal of a half million pounds of local produce and meat donated to food banks, Brandywine Creek Farms will put 30 acres into production." One of the main goals is to increase acreage every season. The farm will be open to the public June 1-October 1. "We are still looking for more funding to get completely off the ground. We are still $62,000 short. We won't be self-sufficient for six to seven more years." Lawler is excited to be teaming up with organizations such as Gleaners to increase the fight against hunger. "We are looking forward to working with so many different groups of people and inspiring them to make sure people don't go hungry. We welcome all the help we can get." Brandywine Creek Farms is located at 5332 North 400 East, Greenfield. Donations are currently being taken by mail or online at BrandywineCreekFarms.org. Contact Jonathan Lawler and Brandywine Creek Farms at jlawler@ brandywinecreekfarms.org, 317-246-8640 or on their Facebook page (Brandywine Creek Farms). THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT TRIBUTE TO LONGTIME LAWRENCE NORTH COACH JACK KEEFER Writer / Ray Compton . Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Perhaps if we dialed back a time machine, we may have a better perspective on the long and successful tenure that Jack Keefer has had coaching basketball at Lawrence North.

It was 1976.

It was 1976.

Meanwhile, Indiana and Indianapolis sports were moving forward. Market Square Arena was just two years old; Bob Knight and the Hoosiers were fresh off their 32-0 NCAA championship season; and Gene Keady was still an assistant coach at Arkansas. Not to be forgotten, a lanky lad named Larry Bird struck out at Indiana and returned to his friendly confines in French Lick. Three years later, Bird would push Indiana State to the Final Two of the NCAA tournament.

The median household income was $12,686, some new cars cost as little as $2,000 and a stamp for your letter was just 13 pennies. It was 40 years ago when Keefer arrived at the new high school in North siders enjoyed dining at establishments labeled Stable Inn, Lawrence. After graduating from Ball State (and earning his master’s Victoria Station and a weird haunt called Caves and Caverns on degree at Indiana University and coaching at his former high school 86th Street. Oak Hill), the 34-year-old Keefer was selected to lead the inaugural Wildcat program. It was 1976.

Now think about this. That same year, there was a presidential election garnering attention; we were a long way from the Donald and Bernie. The incumbent Gerald Ford was matched against a Democrat from Georgia, Jimmy Carter. Some of the top movies released that year were “Rocky,” “Taxi Driver” and “All The President’s Men.” Sylvester Stallone, Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman were budding box office stars.

Indeed, it was 1976.

atGeist.com / MARCH 2016 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 35

So, it was 40 winters ago when the Jack Keefer Era launched at Lawrence North. The first Wildcat edition managed a modest 8-13 season. Since that beginning, Keefer’s Green and Red squads have posted a remarkable 36 winning campaigns with only three losing sessions. Almost 700 wins later, the gymnasium was dedicated in late January as Jack Keefer Gymnasium. “I’m just so honored,” said an emotional Keefer as he was surrounded by local celebrities at the ceremony before the game with Center Grove. “They usually do these things when you are retired.”

THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT

After a brief inspection of the honor roll of players and the trophies at the high school, it takes little time to see why Keefer was voted the United States 2006 High School Coach of the Year and selected to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007. Think about this resume: • As of February 19, Keefer’s Lawrence North outfits had attained 679 victories. (Including his Oak Hill marks, the total climbs to 740 victories, the fourth highest total by an Indiana high school coach.) • Four state championships (1989, 2004, 2005 and 2006) and one national title (2006). • A whopping 17 sectional, six regional and eight Marion County tournament championships. • A locker room filled with all-State players and future college standouts such as Mike Conley, Chris Hill, Greg Oden, Tom Geyer, Eric Montross, Jeff Robinson, Brad Leaf, Eron Harris, Todd Leary and the late John Stewart. • And let’s not misplace this year’s 16-5 Wildcats who feature numerous freshmen and sophomores but are ranked in the top 10 in the state.

THE PUNDIT

In 1976, Bob Lovell was a member of the Indiana basketball coaching fraternity, heading up Franklin College’s program. After that tour, Lovell moved to IUPUI and became athletic director and head basketball coach of the Jaguars. He was well aware of the talent that Keefer was molding. “Jack teaches kids as well as anyone in the state,” said Lovell, now a top voice for high school sports in Indiana with his weekend radio network (Indiana Sports Talk). “He is just a tremendous teacher of the game.” When Lovell was first watching Keefer’s team, the Wildcats ran mainly a motion offense. That has changed, noticed Lovell. “He has adapted his style,” assessed Lovell. “He has four or five offenses that he can use. He has been able to mix in the old with the new. He still realizes the game is for the kids. You can tell that the players love him.” 36 / GEIST MAGAZINE / MARCH 2016 / atGeist.com

Lovell also remarks that Keefer treats all players the same, stars or non-stars.

That passion and teaching spills beyond the October to March timetable, said Etherington.

“Jack has really navigated well the politics of high school sports,” said Lovell. “Everyone understands that it doesn’t matter if you are a Division I player like a Montross, Conley, Oden or not. You will be treated the same.”

“He would be at the gym at 7 in the morning until 6 at night in the summer,” remembered Etherington. “He loves his family first, but he also loves the challenges to get kids to buy into a system. He is great with the x’s and o’s, but he is also a great motivator.”

Lovell notes that Keefer could have succeeded at the college level if he had pursued the opportunity.

And, Etherington recalls, Keefer was clever in inserting psychological moves into his strategies. For instance, Keefer is known to be properly attired on game nights. He and his assistants wear suits with ties and white shirts.

“There’s no doubt he could have coached at that level,” said Lovell of the 74-year-old Keefer. “But he found a home where he can have a family and where he can be impactful. And let’s remember, he still has the fire.”

THE SIDEKICK

Jim Etherington has witnessed the fire in Keefer for almost two decades. He was a top assistant at Lawrence North for 14 years and was an assistant for another year at rival Lawrence Central. “No one outworks Jack,” said Etherington. “And you don’t see burnout. He loves coaching, and no one loves being with kids more than Jack Keefer. He is passionate.”

“Jack believes game nights are 20 of the most important nights of the year,” Etherington said. But there have been nights when Keefer shows up in a denim shirt with jeans and puts a Men at Work sign behind the Lawrence North bench. In another pitch of motivation in 2001, the Wildcats were about to face rival Pike without ailing all-state player Chris Hill. Before practice, the players entered a room attached to the gymnasium. The room was dark and contained about 50 flaming candles. It also hosted a closed casket.

NO ONE OUTWORKS JACK. AND YOU DON’T SEE BURNOUT. HE LOVES COACHING, AND NO ONE LOVES BEING WITH KIDS MORE THAN JACK KEEFER. HE IS PASSIONATE.

- JIM ETHERINGTON -

A few moments later, Keefer sprang out of the casket and declared, “We’re not dead yet.” The players howled in delight, and the undermanned Wildcats defeated Pike the next night.

and parents, but he is not interested in coaching the parents. He wants to win, but he also understands the bigger picture of making the kids better as players and people.”

“It always seemed that the bigger the challenge, the better his teams play,” said Etherington. “He always makes you think that you can get anything done."

THE PARTNER

THE BOSS

There was another big event 40 years ago in central Indiana, at least in the Nesbit household. That was when Lawrence Township Athletic Director Grant Nesbit was born. After serving as an assistant athletic director at Greenfield-Central, Nesbit became the athletic director at Lawrence North in 2001. He became the district athletic director this fall and was instrumental in having the gymnasium dedicated to Keefer. “We have had a wonderful relationship,” Nesbit said. “This may be his 48th year of coaching, but he works just as hard as he ever has. He is so competitive, but he also knows when it is time to fight and when it is not time to fight. He understands what it takes to have a good organization.”

They say that behind every good man is a good woman. Perhaps no one fits that description better than Jan Keefer whose favorite seat at Lawrence North games in behind the Wildcat bench. And her most fond time of the night is greeting husband Jack immediately after the games. “She is with him every step of the way,” said Etherington. “They are a team.” Their son Jake is also a Wildcat senior. For the female Keefer, the games add more hours to her schedule. In the day time, she is a top attorney at Bingham Greenebaum Doll, one of the city’s top law firms. “But she also knows the game,” Etherington said.

Kentwood provides one-stop shopping for residential and businesses with their selection of new, remanufactured and used office furniture options and services. "What makes us stand out is that we are the only company in Indiana that can combine high quality, value oriented product, remanufactured and used product to help clients meet tighter budgets," says Kentwood President Bob Koehne. "Other retailers will try to sell you all new, or all used, but we can blend the three together to hit good price points." Kentwood Office Furniture’s motto is "Go Green. Save Green." Kentwood is truly an environmentally sensitive company evidenced by their repurposing efforts with used furniture and creating a "like new" feel and look to these pieces. This is done without the upcharge to create refurbished product. "Clients are still buying ‘used’ furniture and should pay appropriately," says Koehne. "We do not use the ‘green’ labeling to create a higher price tag." Sustainability along with the multitude of available options is attractive and looks professional with the combination of Kentwood Office Furniture solutions. They provide comprehensive services, extending beyond design to include installation, reconfiguration, asset storage and moving. Referrals drive their business. For these clients, Becker and his specialists are able to offer recommendations for specific types of trees and plants that will attract several species of birds or other wild life if the client is interested in assisting the ecosystem while designing their landscapes. Trees like the Grey Dogwood or Wild Cherry trees act as a single-source feeder to many native Indiana birds and are commonly included in the design process for this reason.

“After Mom died, we all began worrying more about Dad.” —Kate Weese “Having raised 10 children in our family, our Mom and Dad were always busy and very active socially, even after we all left their home. When Mom died suddenly, we knew it would be difficult for Dad to transition into a “new normal” in an empty home. With the help of all the kids, from coast to coast, we sought a retirement community that would provide Dad with a safe and active life. We all agreed Westminster Village North was our best option and to him, a perfect new home.”

Scotty's Celebrates Years in Business

Writer / Kara Reibel Photographer / Brian Brosmer; Provided

Celebrating 20 years, Scotty’s Dawghouse is the latest of the brand expansion with the most meaningful experience taking place in his hometown. Scott Wise grew up in Muncie, attended Yorktown High School and transferred to Ball State after his freshman year at DePauw. “I knew I wanted to own my own business,” shares Wise. After graduation, he worked in Texas at a sporting goods chain as a copywriter and bartended at night. He hated his 9-5 job but loved working in the service industry at night, foreshadowing what was to come. Wise comes from a family of entrepreneurs; his parents own their own businesses. He was known around town by his parent’s contributions to the community. Wise wished to make his own mark. Upon moving back to

Muncie, he heard a corner bar was for sale. Wise created a business plan and presented it to his father, who was impressed with the attention to detail and thoughtful consideration of the plan. The first Scotty’s opened on the corner of University and Martin Streets. The original Scotty’s is still standing. This year marks the 20th anniversary of its opening. Given the college town success, naturally the second location would be in Bloomington. Now there are 14 restaurants under the Scotty’s branded empire. Butler University will celebrate the first bar on campus in over 200 years, Scotty’s Dawghouse. Located close to Hinkle Fieldhouse, Scotty’s Dawghouse promises to be a popular hangout for students and local patrons. All of the Scotty’s restaurants personify Wise’s personality through brick and mortar along with good food. To Wise, each restaurant is a living, breathing child of his.

Wise was raised to give back to the community. As a kid, he raked the lawn next door to help his neighbor, and he’s always had a soft spot for those with special needs. Wise has his own difficulties with low vision, color blindness and a detached retina. A pivotal moment with Wise and his family occurred in the summer of 2014 when Wise teetered near death with a brain infection. After gratefully recovering from that terrifying experience, he was determined to accelerate doing as much good in the community as he could. “With Scotty’s Brewhouses, we were steady with our community efforts,” shares Wise.

“After my brain infection situation, we went from 30 mph to 100 mph.” It was after that experience that Wise created a stronger vision statement for his company, which included a card that all employees carry every day, reinforcing the message.

your community. Donate your mind, body and soul to something you love. The card was born out of my brain trauma and has transformed the company.”

The folded business card reads, “I will work hard and make _______ proud today.” The employees fill in the blank. Inside, the card has 30 statements, reflecting the golden rule.

This pivot of focus led Wise to a decision he is most proud of: opening a THR3E WISE MEN Brewing Co. at a Courtyard by Marriott in downtown Muncie with the intention of hiring a portion of his workforce from the Erskine Green Training Center for people with special needs.

“They come to work and want to make themselves, their parents, their kids proud,” says Wise. “Every 90 days, do something in

a fellow Yorktown High School grad Jeff Huffman via Twitter. Huffman has a son with Down syndrome and is a major advocate with The Arc of Indiana. He connected Wise with Kim Dodson, Executive Director of The Arc of Indiana, who pitched the idea to Wise. Dodson barely began to speak when Wise interrupted her and said, “I’m in.” Dodson replied, “20-25 percent of your workforce must be composed of the training institute students who have special needs.” “I said I’m IN! 100 percent, I am IN!” replied Wise, who knew with every fiber of his being that this was the right thing to do. “This fit 100 percent with what we are doing. What The Arc of Indiana was asking is what my company is all about,” states Wise. “I am a believer in God. I am supposed to be doing this restaurant.” After committing, the reality set in about consideration for other groups, guests and the other employees. “It’s not as complex as one might imagine,” shares Jason Podell, Director of Training for Scotty’s Brewhouse and THR3E WISE MEN Brewing Co. “Sensitivity training for awareness and how to work with people with special needs was helpful.” Three weeks leading up to the grand opening, the human resources director

came to see Wise with tears in her eyes. “Scott, you wouldn’t believe how incredible this thing is,” says Wise of the conversation. “We thought we were doing something for the people with special needs, but you should see what is happening to the people around them.” “The team is cohesive because of these people,” says Podell. “We’ve never seen anything like it – we lost fewer employees through the process than ever. We average a 30 percent attrition rate before the doors open, and in Muncie, it was less than 5 percent.” “The employees from the training facility are very loyal and productive when focused on a task. Their excellent attitudes are contagious and greatly beneficial for our culture,” says Podell. “After this experience,

we are using this as a model for all of our restaurants.” The special needs employees are the glue that binds the family of workers at THR3E WISE MEN in Muncie. The rest of the employees are protective and nurturing with their co-workers with special needs. With an 82 percent unemployment rate among special needs adults, these are their first paychecks and their first uniforms, and they are jumping up and down with joy. “To be able to celebrate 20 years in business with the new downtown Muncie location is so meaningful in so many ways,” says Wise. "It’s awesome for me to come back and open such an impactful restaurant to celebrate our 20th year.” “I love the fact that we are trendsetters for our community, state and country,” says Podell. “Adults with special needs have the potential of being an amazing workforce, and it’s relatively untapped. It’s the right thing to do. We are honored to be a part of this. It’s eye-opening and heart-opening for all involved.” For more information on the Erskine Green Training Institute, please visit erskinegreeninstitute.org, and for Scotty’s restaurants, visit scottysbrewhouse.com.
