To the Stars Through Difficulties (Above) Lindner Learning’s Karen Lindner Moriarty (left) struggled with dyslexia and A.D.H.D. throughout her childhood. indner Learning Center has served the community for over 20 years as a 1-to-1 ratio learning center and school for non-traditional learners. The students at the learning center span from elementary school age to adults in need of study skills, academic support, and specific strategic intervention for dyslexia, A.D.D., NVLD, comprehension weaknesses, Asperger’s syndrome, and other learning differences.

What makes Lindner Learning Center methods successful? Assistant Director, Erin Lindner Uber, explains the formula: “We are fueled by the longevity of superbly trained, degreed teachers carefully chosen for their experience and expertise in learning interventions. I feel that we have the best teaching team in the county. In addition, we select only proven methodologies for our instruction. We understand the importance of each student’s time and each family’s investment. For this reason, we have multiple levels of cross-checking for each tutorial session and willingly collaborate with the student’s home, school, mental health advisor, or physician to ensure the best outcome possible.” Additionally, Lindner Learning Center offers the Hands on External Learning Program (H.E.L.P), a highly individualized school program designed to serve various school needs of adolescent learners. We have students who thrive at LLC for their entire junior high or high school programming, but we also have students enrolled in one or two accredited classes for course recovery, public school enrichment, or simply individualized instruction in a difficult course.” How is Lindner Learning Center different from other learning companies in the Indianapolis area? Executive Director and owner, Karen Lindner Moriarity, explains:

educational community. Many of our students bring with them expensive and extensive testing, said Lindner Moriarity. At Lindner Learning Center, we are able to review a student’s evaluation, develop a custom intervention for each student, implement it, and then send our student back to our referral source for post evaluation.” Karen continues to survive, accept, and thrive as she lives her own life as an adult dyslexic with A.D.D. She reflects, “In the beginning, before our company had a name or was, for that matter, a company, I tutored two students out of my laundry room. I know the heartache that formal education can hold for a student like me. This is the reason for Lindner Learning Center’s strong mission statement to better the lives of every individual that enters the center. We understand that families are entrusting us with developing the potential of their student and we are honored to be invited to be part of that child’s success.”

“We are a locally owned and operated company, and we share a life and community with the students we serve.

We have a highly individualized, methodologically sound program to offer. Our experience has shown us that each student is perfect in their essence and brings with them a unique set of issues. We know that there is no such thing as a miracle fix for our students. It is a step-by-step process through meticulously planned, executed, and documented sessions that result in an excellent intervention.” How do families seek out services at Lindner Learning Center? “Lindner Learning Center is predominately a referralbased business by the psychological, medical, and M arch 2 0 1 2 |

Clara Hedden

Clara Hedden, best known for her Slovenian Potica and other cooking delights, turns 90 this weekend. Holy Spirit at Geist Catholic Church members might recognize Clara from serving breakfast and lunches during elections and running the church’s kitchen for special events, priests’ dinners and funeral luncheons.

Clara was born in Haughville, a Slovenian community near downtown Indianapolis, to immigrant parents. She met and married Frank “Pop” Hedden who was a Butler University teacher and coach. Today, Clara has two children, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

They moved to Masthead in 1987 and are proud to have been a part of the Holy Spirit at Geist inception in 1990. Ten Local Spring Break Excursions By Kathi Moore Each year around this time, as cabin fever edges into our psyche and we tire of brown landscape and salt-stained carpet in our cars, thoughts turn to…Spring Break! I think adults are just as excited as the kids are, to think of a blissful week on the beach or a visit to the famous mouse. That’s nice…but many families can’t pull the time off work or don’t have the budget for a tropical vacation…so must turn to a more, well…local vacation….the not-nearly-asexciting “StayCation”. Luckily Indianapolis has many great opportunities to be a tourist in your own town, and surrounding areas are also doable. Here are 10 to consider as you plan out your week (in no particular order). Try to explore somewhere you and the kids haven’t been yet! 1. Pinewood Derby at the Indiana State Museum; Touted as the world’s longest and fastest Pinewood Derby track, this 125-foot speedway is rigged from the second floor balcony down to the main floor for lots of wooden auto-racing fun (museum has a stable of cars, or bring your own). March 27 – April 1, 2012

2. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is an obvious, as it is on many “best of” lists for family attractions in the country. “The Adventures of Mr. Potato Head” is now open through May, 2012. 3. Duckpin Bowling in Fountain Square; easier for the younger kids than regular bowling, this is a good lesson in history, too. Fountain Square is walkable and has many restaurants to choose from, plus interesting shops. 4. Take a walk along the Tow Path past Broadripple and Butler University and end up at the 100 Acres park at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. This is a well-thought out blend of art and nature is fun for all ages, costs nothing and you can even bring along the family dog! 5. Of course, if you haven’t been to the Indianapolis Zoo lately, its always a great place for the family. Be sure to visit the Oceans exhibit for a chance to pet a shark or get up close and personal with the big cats. 6. Take a bike ride on the Cultural Trail, followed by lunch downtown (didn’t you always love going downtown when you were a kid?). City Market is a great choice for lunch and you can park your bikes right there. Bonus: Winter

Farmer’s Market continues on Saturdays through March. 7. Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum; sure you’ve been to the race, but have you been to the museum? It’s a National Historic Landmark, with more than 75 rare and exciting vehicles on display. 8. Indiana State Historic Sites; these should be listed separately, but check your map and see that there are many within 2 hours of Indianapolis. T.C. Steele in Nashville, Levi Coffin in Fountain City, or the Whitewater Canal in Metamora…all have stories to tell about Hoosier history. 9. Indiana State Parks; our family has always enjoyed trips to the state parks for hiking, bird watching and just enjoying nature. We’ve even brought the family dog with us on hikes (check first). State Park Inns often offer good, comfort food in addition to inexpensive overnight lodging. 10. Beautiful Bloomington will be blooming, with many recreational opportunities from caving to historic walking tours to shopping. And, its never too early to introduce your kids to one of Indiana’s finest universities. So…formulate a plan…venture out…and do something with the kids that you’ve not done before! And enjoy!

from the

family magazine

In Search of Better Grades, Tutors Where did you begin your search for a tutor? Mugele: “Locally. I trust friends to let me know who is qualified for the job and who might be a good fit with my kids personalities. If I don’t find someone that way, I’ll look for college students who need to log hours for community service or class.” Finnell: “Referrals! I thought about checking out some of the more formal sources for tutoring, but decided to approach friends and co-workers first for some guidance.” How was the response and how easily did you find available tutors?

Indianapolis moms Shari Finnell (left) and Jody Mugele (right) enlisted the help of a tutor for their children who were struggling in school. Writer Joe Wadlington asks them both for some advice in hopes of helping other parents looking for help.

By Joe Wadlington When my mother was growing up, people rarely got straight “A’s.” This had nothing to do with the quality of the students or the education. Back then an “A” meant exceptional work and it was uncommon to be “exceptional” in every single category. These days, with inflated grades and an effort to not leave students behind, children are receiving higher grades than ever. So what is a parent to do? Naturally, no one wants his or her child slipping behind the pack. It can also be difficult for a child to truly shine when the bar is lowered. Many parents look for tutoring or private lessons to give their children a cutting edge. There are many justifications for this; money spent on tutors now may be money saved by scholarships later, maybe private school is just a little too costly but you’re child’s current school is just a little too slow or maybe a parent seeks extracurricular help to keep their child on par. Whatever the reasons for the tutor, attaining one can be a confusing first step. Here is what local parents Shari Finnell and Jody Mugele went through when they realized they wanted to provide their kids with something extra.

Mugele: “Quick. I knew my standards and expectations going in (maybe they were lowish) but it helped get what I needed quickly.”

Finnell: “Fortunately, it didn’t take that long for me to get a personal recommendation for Jonathan Bernardi, who also teaches math at a nearby community college. He was highly recommended by one of my co-workers who had used him as a tutor for one of his continuing education classes.” What qualifications did you need in your tutor? Mugele: “1. Someone who understands my kids are individuals and who will know how to motivate them. 2. Someone who had a specific depth of experience/knowledge about the subject.” Finnell: “It was important to me that I found someone who would push my son without turning him off, as well as someone who had the right skills and aptitude for explaining college prep mathematics. Since I was also looking for someone who could help him with his study habits; again, to help prepare him for college, I thought it was important that it was something he could easily relate to as well as respect.” What other qualities were factors? (Age, gender, availability, etc.) Mugele: “Money matters. Location matters. Availability

from www.wzpl.com matters. I’m big on allowing my kids to be as independent as possible, so one consideration for me was if my kids could walk to their tutor’s studio or home.” Finnell: “I preferred a male so that my son could relate better. Personality was huge … the right “match” from that perspective was a huge consideration. Age wasn’t a huge factor … I wanted someone with experience, but yet who is able to get across to someone my son’s age. Also, I wasn’t necessarily looking for a formal schedule (i.e. meet once a week on Mondays) but rather someone who was willing to work with us as needed.” Did the relationship with your tutor turn out well or did you have to look other places? Mugele: “Worked out very well! My kids have missed tutors when they’ve outgrown them and they still keep in touch.” Finnell: “The relationship turned out really well … it clicked from the beginning, which is saying a lot because my son wasn’t looking forward to working with a mentor. Jonathan took the time to draw up on his own personal experiences in high school to break the ice with my son, which was a huge factor in setting

the tone. He also talked about favorite books that they had in common. Because of the tutor’s passion for math and other subjects my son shares an interest in, the tutoring relationship has proven to be even more successful than originally planned.” Did your child’s work improve? Mugele: “Yes!” Finnell: “Yes. Jonathan has helped my son get over some ‘humps’ in his math classes, as well as encouraged him to improve his study habits in other areas.” Tutors and instructors can be found throughout the city and suburbs. Start your search by asking friends for referrals but also make a point to ask current instructors and schools. They will have listings of tutors readily available.

By Janet C. Striebel According to the American Sportfishing Association, more people fish in the U.S. than play golf or tennis combined. Many people like to fish as a sport, a hobby, even as a profession. You’ve probably seen lots of anglers fishing at Geist. “Geist is one of the best bass fishing lakes in Indiana,” says 18

Todd Hollowell, local professional bass fisherman. “Geist is attractive to many organizations, such as the Indiana Bass Federation, because it’s such a great fishery.” Thanks to strict conservation and “catch and release” practices, the Geist eco-system stays in balance. As a fishing fanatic, it’s seems appropriate that Todd has made Fishers his home of eight years. Besides working as an insurance agent for Ray Insurance Group (near Scotty’s Lakehouse,) he recently signed with Red Gold Tomatoes (Elwood, IN) to represent them on the FLW Tour in 2012, the highest level of the sport with FLW Outdoors. (www. flwoutdoors.com) If you’re not familiar with professional bass fishing, this is the equivalent to a stock car driver racing in NASCAR. “Since bass fishing is a visibly growing sport, many companies are choosing to get involved as a way to market and expose their brands to a huge demographic that fishing offers,” says Todd. “I’m proud to be associated with Red Gold, who provides thousands of jobs for Hoosiers in

Central Indiana and produces premium tomatoes grown in the Midwest.”

FROM BASEBALL TO BASS FISHING Todd played baseball professionally, for the Indy Frontier League on the Richmond Roosters. He played for two years as a pitcher before facing a shoulder injury that forced him to change directions in his life. He then coached baseball at Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn. Eventually, he realized however, that his focus had changed from competing on the mound of a baseball field to the seat in a bass boat. In 2002, Todd began fishing competitively for the Walmart Bass Fishing League.

BASS FISHING “CATCHING ON” IN OUR COMMUNITY Starting in April, the Tuesday Night Bass Club meets from 5-9pm at the Olio Road ramp. These events have grown in popularity, with this club and with other anglers who visit Geist. Todd says, “There is such a positive economic benefit with people coming here to fish Geist who are buying gas, eating at restaurants, and staying in hotels. Geist is a valuable resource not only for boating, swimming, and skiing, but also for fishing.” One of Todd’s friends is Derick “Dizzy”Grant, guard for the Harlem Globetrotters, who is also a Fishers resident.

FUN FISHING FACTS • Most bass fishing tournaments are judged by the highest weight with each angler allowed five bass measuring at least 14 inches in length. • Todd has been fishing since age 4. Like his sons, he learned how to cast a rod and reel before riding a bike. • Todd fished his first bass tournament with his dad in 1988 at the age of 12, at Geist with the Tuesday Night Bass Club.

They spend time together in the summer and share a common bond with bass fishing. In fact, they took 2nd place in a benefit tournament last summer. Also, they are both passionate about taking children fishing to introduce them to the outdoors.

Mentoring at Marion University Bass fishing is also growing as a collegiate sport. Many universities have bass fishing team such as Indiana, Purdue, and Ball State. Todd mentors the Marian University Bass Fishing Team, which has just started competing in 2012. He has assisted with obtaining sponsors, ordering jerseys, and scheduling tournaments. Todd claims, “College fishing is really taking off and is grooming the next generation of college-educated men and women that will continue to grow this sport.”

Making Baby Sleepers a Zip By Jenn Kampmeier Have you ever had to change a diaper at three o’clock in the morning? You have one eye open, your baby is fussing, and you’re trying to snap the bottom of the kid’s pajamas. Frustrated and cursing under your breath you think; there has to be a better way! Enter Hello World Clothing Company. Hello World® is the brain child of a loving mom, Cynthia Wise, who wanted an easier way for savvy parents to connect with the needs of their children and with their own world. “We realize that busy parents and children have one important common thread: each other. When your child shines the eyes of innocence in your direction, everything else is insignificant,” said Wise. The first product was the SmartZip Sleeper. It comes in blue “Blue Me Away” and pink “Made Me Blush.” Both have brown accents. The sleeper has a two-way zipper that allows you to unzip from the top for traditional dressing, and it has an additional zipper pull at the bottom, so you can unzip from the bottom, where access is needed most during a diaper change. No more little arms wiggling out at the top when you want to change a diaper at the bottom! “Our second product was the SimpleZip Pant,” added Wise. “This pant has a one way zipper at the inseam. This allows for one simple zip when changing the diaper. I loved the snap pants, but didn’t enjoy realigning them. And there weren’t very many on the market. I also would get frustrated when I would be in a public restroom and had to take the pants completely off as they would inevitably fall on the dirty floor. I wanted to simplify a sometimes very stressful situation for all caregivers.”

Hello World Clothing Company founder Cynthia Wise has developed baby sleepers featuring zippers instead of snaps. Your Family Chiropractic Wellness Center

Wise also unveiled a new green color unisex sleeper, “Olive You More,” with sizes ranging from 0-24m.

Where were these gems when I was changing diapers? Not only does this new company make great products, they understand that part of being in business is giving back to the community. Hello World Clothing Company has a giving back foundation that donates 5% proceeds of online sales to The Aidan Brown Foundation, a local charity that raises money to provide iPads to children in the hospital with cancer, in honor of Aidan Brown, who fought Neuroblastoma and won! They donate sleepers and 5% proceeds to The New Life Home Orphanage in Kenya through the Amani Foundation. This was inspired by a local girl in Wise’s daughter’s school, her family created the Amani Foundation to help support the orphanage where they adopted their daughter. “We are currently working with a tube fed children’s organization. It turns out our sleepers are a great answer for tube fed babies. The two-way zipper allows for an opening anywhere along the body. The parents typically cut holes in clothes or use gowns. Our sleepers keep their babies warm and comfortable while keeping the tube in place. I get letters all the time from parents wanting bigger sizes and more colors. Our hope is to run a yearly holiday campaign to provide one sleeper to the foundation for every one sold on our site,” Wise stated. Hello World made their first sale in June of 2009, they continue to grow and learn new things daily. Thoughts on being a business owner, what does it take? “Money! It takes money to start and keep going, but sales take time to catch up to that initial investment. I believe if you do your research, continuously ask questions and give it your all, you will succeed. In the end the business may fail, but at least I took a risk, had fun and learned a lot about myself. I also have more enthusiasm and less trepidation about launching new ideas.” That’s good, because we love those zippers! Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce board members (left to right) Andrew Lee, Jana Karrmann, and Mike Peck have reason to be optimistic. With 30% growth in the last 12 months, a new Executive Director (Jessica Tower), and rave reviews from new members, the value proposition is better than ever.

Cultivation in Progress By Janet C. Striebel Since 1984, the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce has grown significantly in size and in its scope of mission. The mission of the Chamber is to be a resource to businesses providing information, connections, advocacy, and opportunities. This non-profit organization provides services for its members not only to help businesses prosper but also to strengthen and support the Lawrence community. Although there have been some stagnant periods along the way, the chamber has taken root and is sprouting new life among the Lawrence business sector. “We’re in a period of reestablishing and regrowing,” says Andrew Lee, the current President. “The way we’ve approached it is to go back to our roots and figure out who we are what we do and just try to better that and build our growth accordingly.” With the help of new board members, Lee and his team, aim to not only establish progression, but also add significance to what they do amid their mission.

Delineating and Preserving “The Feel” of the Chamber Recently, I had the privilege of meeting with a few representatives of the Chamber’s board of directors. I found it refreshing to absorb the excitement and motivation in their presence and to grasp their intentions as they volunteer their time to make a positive difference. Before becoming President of the Chamber, Lee worked in government for six years. He came to the U.S. in 1999 from Bristol, England. After earning his MBA, he started focusing on organizational development of non-profits. Incidentally, besides volunteering his time at the Chamber, Lee is also Executive Director of Art with a Heart—which promotes hands-on creative expression to help educate and inspire Indianapolis children who are at risk. (www. artwithaheart.us) Lee and his team, reflect back on the rudimentary stages of their plans to improve the chamber. With his crisp British accent, Lee declares, “Every chamber is the same. And every chamber is different…Eighty percent of members in almost all chambers say that they’re for networking. But every chamber has a different feel to it. For us, the idea was

to figure out what the members think the feel is…what do we need to do to keep that going? When people tell you that the feel of the chamber is small, that everyone knows everybody and there is a lot of comfort, our job is to focus on how to keep this same sense despite the fact that the chamber is on a growth path.”

Establishing Goals, Enveloping Member Value “We want to add meaning so that it’s not just another breakfast, or just another lunch, or another networking event, but to make sure that what we’re offering is meaningful for our members,” says Jana Karrmann, First Vice President. After many conversations about “member value,” the board has focused on making the chamber attractive to new members and increasing retention rates. One major priority has been to make sure the goals of the members align with the goals of the chamber board. “We’ve created our goals based on the feedback of our members,” says Mike Peck, Marketing Committee Chair. “We conducted a survey and found that the members are finding value in the programming and services we provide. So, we’ve made steps in the right direction and continue to set goals that support what members value. Ultimately, what we want a chamber member to say is, ‘Connecting with community business leaders is an important part of what I do every day because it helps my business.’” The research from the survey also concluded that when members attend events, the chamber environment felt approachable, comfortable and welcoming. In addition to serving as Vice President, Karrmann also chairs the membership committee, and elaborates, “When the renewal comes twelve months later and they’re looking at the cost, we want members to instinctively take out the checkbook and rewrite the check because there’s no question in their mind that it was money well spent and a good return on their investment.” Collectively, the board plans each event in the hopes that all members will leave with new ideas, connections, resources, concepts, and energy that germinates continuous inspiration. Active Executive Committees: Engaging Members and Merit

extremely optimistic about achieving that goal of great member value.”

Last March, the board hired a new executive director, Jessica Tower. Lee adds, “Since its relocation to Lawrence, the Monarch Beverage Company has played a pivotal role in the chamber. Their support has helped us land a first class Executive Director.”

Furthermore, with respect to the survey, the board learned a very promising detail—over 85% of members who have been active for six years or less said that they were finding value with the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and they were getting the resources they need. Peck, who was instrumental in the conduction of this survey, affirms, “If our members are saying that their participation is of value, then we’re living our brand promise and we’re going to continue to do that.”

Since Tower has come into light and sprinkled the seeds, a new full executive board of directors has emerged and begun to till the land of Lawrence into a fertile field of crops. As a result, this fervent team has implemented active committees that meet every month in order to build and enhance the chamber’s mission. These committees are as follows: • Membership (Jana Karrmann) coordinating and enticing new members into the organization • Finance (Jason Kieninger) overseeing all financial transactions • Marketing (Mike Peck) managing marketing and communications • Ambassadors (Scott Maskel) facilitating businesses to know how to engage their members beyond basic membership • Young Professionals (Jake Rhodes) connecting with young people in organizations to help them realize the power of networking and value of connecting to the community

Living the Brand Promise So far, within the last year, the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce must be doing something right. The membership enrollment has climbed steadily and keeps growing. Within a year of having the Executive Director (Jessica Tower) in control, the assets are up 30% for the organization. Lee asserts, “In seeing this increase in just nine months, we’re

Amid the enthusiastic vibes in the air, Karrmann chimes in, “Everybody wants to be a part of something that’s growing…If a company’s doing well, people buy its stock. We may not have stock to offer but we do have many beneficial opportunities.” The Lawrence Chamber of Commerce hosts many networking events such as the “Breakfast Before Hours” held on the first Thursday of the month and “Business After Hours” held on the third Thursday of each month. Follow Your Energy Flow to Find Your True You Photos and Story by Stephanie Carlson Curtis 42

ho are you? Are you truly who you are meant to be? Are you living your life fully, in the moment, fulfilling your purpose? These tough questions are difficult for most of us to answer as we evaluate and reevaluate our lives, searching for signs that will help us make sense of our place on earth. According to Michelle Wozniak, if you open your heart and mind to the energy flowing through your body, awareness could be the food that nourishes your soul. And understanding your energy might help you make changes or encourage you to stay on course. “I believe that everyone has special gifts and are completely one with God,” said Wozniak, who does not really practice a specific religion. Born and raised in Lawrence, the Indiana University graduate, graphic designer, wife and mother to two teens, affirms that fully embracing our gifts is a choice of freewill. “I have always known that my life purpose is to help others remember who they truly are.”

provoking writer. Several years ago I was prompted to read his manuscripts and was amazed at how our beliefs matched exactly,” said Wozniak. “I took after him by questioning all spiritual belief systems and determined what felt most comfortable for me.” Comfort and privacy are two of her top concerns when she creates and interprets energy drawings. Comfort was the first concern she had with Tom Britt as she prepared to interpret his past life expressed in his energy drawing, and how his past life affects what he is bringing into his present existence as a crusader. “I didn’t really know what to expect,” said Britt, publisher

Solutions for Life’s Transitions

As a youngster, Wozniak felt older than her biological age, which sometimes made her feel out of place. It was often difficult for her to tolerate energies, especially in large crowds where she was affected by overwhelming feelings of negative impulses without really knowing why. “Fortunately, by contemplating these lonely feelings, it made me truly remember I am never alone. God is always in my heart,” said Wozniak, reflecting on her childhood experiences. “When I was very young, my imagination always got the best of me and as a teen I started having out-of-body experiences which were frightening at first. Over time, I’ve learned to enjoy the ride.” During these unexpected moments, she completely identifies with her true spirit and nothing else exists.

Wozniak credits her grandfather, who passed away before she was born, for his guidance, “He was a very spiritual man and a thoughtM arch 2 0 1 2 |

of the Geist and Carmel Community Newsletters. “She started telling me that I was a Knights Templar in a previous life. evolve from the Divine, which is pure love. “This love is then shown on paper, explaining how they project their core energy. No matter if a person’s energy is blocked or needs adjustment to the flow, they can still see who they truly are.”

When Wozniak settles in her quiet place to begin a drawing, she completely centers herself, relaxes into the person’s energy and prepares to receive messages. “First I ask permission of the person and their higher self. I won’t get into a person’s energy unless they let me in.”

Wozniak never discussed her experiences until she was well into her twenties and then only privately, but she says her children and husband know this is part of who she is and they embrace it. “So many people are frustrated because they are not living in perfect Tom Britt’s alignment with their perfect energy drawing depicts his selves,” said Wozniak. “The key to orange (passion) and pink (love) energies being figuring out your purpose is to BE dominant with the sign of the Knights Templar at in every moment, quiet the noise his heart. All symbols, lines, and colors represent something different in all people. and use your God given gifts.”

Once they let her in, she’s never sure who will send the messages that inspire her to draw. The person’s angels, guides, family members and those who have passed on convey colors, direction, symbols and translation. “Sometimes I feel physical pain in my hands, in my head or in my heart.” According to Wozniak, the beautiful thing about these drawings is they show how the person’s energies 44

Wozniak’s college roommate, Siobhan Roark recalled that she had no idea her friend was gifted in this way. “In my energy drawing my sister spoke to her. I had a rainbow over my head but a chain link wrapped around me,” said Roark.

“Michelle said she visualized my sister saying how sorry she was that she had taken her life and taken my rainbow from me. It was very touching.” Certified in Esoteric Healing and Reiki, a spiritual practice developed by the Japanese using hands to transfer positive healing energy, Wozniak reveals her thoughts on sharing her gift in a world that is increasingly becoming more open to holistic healing. “It is such a blessing that the world has evolved to embrace our spiritual awakening with such public acceptance. As I grew older, along my journey, there were only one or two people that I could talk to, but now there are hundreds to listen and to learn from,” said Wozniak. “We are always evolving and expanding our minds beyond the universal consciousness to a place deep within our hearts, to our Creator who has always been there with us.” Kristen Durrett was curious about her energy, “I found her interpretation very interesting. When she explained the colors in my drawing and the meaning of the symbols, I thought it was pretty accurate considering she had never met me.” While Wozniak realizes some will not take her seriously, doubters do not disturb her. “The ego and external world are continuously confronting us with lessons to overcome, that will change our perspective and help us find eternal peace. There is no duality in God, only pure love,” explains Wozniak. “If we are part of God then why should we not enjoy and exist in the same pure love here, in our heaven on earth? She admits her life is no different than that of any other parent as she recalls completing a peaceful session only to find her children arguing over fruit loops in the kitchen. Even so, she believes it is part of her calling to get married, to have children and to be someone who exists in this world, but was showered with a special talent and is called to share her gift with others in order to help them become better people and live life more fully. A cherished phrase sums it all up for Wozniak, “seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and

then all things will be added unto you.” To learn more about Michelle Wozniak and her energy drawings, please visit www.soulincite.com. You may also visit www.atGeist.com to see other examples of energy drawings and watch Wozniak give Britt his reading.

Full Steam Ahead

ometimes a simple repair can lead to a full remodeling job, as in the case of my own guest bathroom, which doubles as a steam shower, and was the most popular bathroom in the house for family members and our guests.

Designer Wendy Prather of Lemire Design was the first to take a look at the room. “We knew that the plain vanity, dated faux painting, and little shower door had to go. In my mind, I wanted to go with a darker, sassy look instead of the neutrals. Wendy agreed and the transformation was started.

So when it came time to fix a small leak in the shower, I decided it was time to Invest in My Nest, with full steam ahead to give this bathroom the makeover it deserved!

The room was gutted and the opening to the shower was widened by 12 inches, which gave the shower a surprisingly larger look. It also exposed the back wall of the shower, suddenly making it a focal point and in need of something

dramatic. We chose a tile pattern (Architectual Brick and Tile) made up of shimmery bronzes with random highlights of silver. It certainly made a statement and we decided on a glass door to show off the new wall of tile. A strip of the same tile wrapped around the rest of the bathroom, topped with a unique black-bronze chair rail, custom flooring and ceramic tile all in the same hues (The Tile shop) really blended together filling out the rest of the bathroom. Every project of redecorating can have it challenges and ours came in the tile selection, which came from three different stores with three different grouts. It took some work to make it all blend. The plain white vanity was replaced with a sleek black cabinet (Zinn Kitchens, Inc.) topped with an exotic stone called Black Thunder (Stone Spectrum). A partially recessed Kohler glass bowl and a Pfister waterfall faucet (Fergusons) brought it all together. The strip lighting and mirror were replaced with a framed backlit mirror (Glassworks by Design) and two chocolate colored crystal pendants that I found on the internet. A bronze shimmery faux finish (Faux painting by Lisa) was added to the walls and a silvery sparkle to the ceiling completing this steamy oasis ready for all to enjoy.

Road to the LPGA Stops in Local Pro’s Backyard Brittany Kelly, Former HSE, Ball State Standout to Play in LPGA Tournament at Hawthorns Golf Club Photos and Story by Stephanie Carlson Curtis

Give an 8-year old a golf club and a little white ball, and you never know what might happen when she tees it up. In Brittany Kelly’s case, that golf club felt like it belonged in her hands, but before it became an extension of who she is, she juggled multiple balls – from soccer to basketball. But, her relationship with golf has had staying power and is now offering opportunities she could only dream about. As a member of the Symetra Tour player marketing team, she has been chosen as spokeswoman for the My Marsh Golf Classic, a $100,000 purse world-class women’s golf event, scheduled to be held at The Hawthorns Golf and Country Club in Fishers May 28-June 3.

play all the sports I wanted to play. I decided golf was going to take me further and I really wanted to play in college at a Division 1 school with a full ride scholarship, so I had to make some tough decisions.” Ultimately, she was able to play goalie on her high school soccer team her senior year.

“What an honor to be asked to publicize this local tournament that will take place in my hometown on the same course I played in high school, where I qualified for my first U.S. Girls Junior, and became runner up at the MAC championships while playing for Ball State,” said Brittany. “I couldn’t be more excited to play in my own backyard.”

It all started with Hamilton County’s 4-hole junior tournaments. Occasional wins as a junior golfer kicked in her drive to tee it up and keep the ball in play. “The first four-hole tournament I won was at Forest Park in Noblesville,” said Brittany. “I thought it was so cool to get a trophy.” And she learned as she grew into the game, it’s not just cool to get a trophy, but it’s seriously hard work to keep that cool going.

Sponsored by Marsh Supermarkets, Hamilton County Sports Authority and the Ladies Professional Golf Association, the Road to the LPGA will stop in Hamilton County for the first time in tour history. According to Joe Kelley, chairman, CEO and president of Marsh, “We are delighted to help bring the rising stars of the LPGA to Central Indiana as a way to raise valuable funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and further enable this great organization to achieve its goals.” A full field of 144 golfers from around the world will compete to develop their careers. A born competitor, Kelly excelled in athletics as a youngster. Upon entering high school, she was forced to toss around her options realizing she had to choose just one sport when freshman soccer conflicted with tryouts for the Hamilton Southeastern girl’s golf team. “I’m very competitive and it was a big decision between soccer and golf. Both sports were in the same season,” said Brittany. “It was a big turning point for me. I was not going to be able to

Brittany’s grandparents on her mother’s side introduced her to the game of golf. “My sister and I used to ride on the cart and keep score.” Ashley, who is 4 years older, chose not to pursue a career in golf but supports her baby sister. “My dad never played golf until he met my mom and now he’s my caddie whenever it fits into his schedule.”

Upon graduating from Hamilton Southeastern High School, she realized she needed to keep in the swing of things, participating in 18-hole events almost daily, all summer long prior to her participation on the Ball State women’s golf team, “Sometimes it’s so hard when you are not playing well and you still have to show up for work day after day.”

have had a successful college career and everyone you are competing with is as good or better than you. I learned through my rookie season that I have some things to work on, needed to make changes and focus on what was going to be my one up on everyone else,” said Brittany. “I finally got new clubs and was professionally fitted.”

“During spring break, I’d go to Florida and practice golf. It was like a kick off to the season. In fact, almost every family vacation was a golf vacation.” But, even though Brittany worked hard at her game and put in numerous hours and effort to reach the top, she was humbled upon arriving at Qualifying School. “It’s really hard when you

Brittany did qualify for the Symetra Tour during Q-school and she gives her caddie high scores for her winning performance. “Dad started caddying for me when I played in the Indiana Women’s Golf events,” said Brittany. “He’s great at helping with yardage, wind and encouraging me think about things I’m not thinking about at the moment, like play the slope, if I’m putting.” But, on the green her Dad, Ken Kelly, a teacher at Carmel Middle School, normally hangs back and does not read putts. “You know it’s just like coaching. When players are playing well it’s fun and everybody is happy. When Brittany is on her game my job is easy and life is good,” said Kelly, who has coached the Carmel High School girl’s golf team for nearly two decades. “As her caddy, I never really feel nervous until her game gets challenging. I take my job seriously and focus on giving her the facts she needs to make the shot. I try to keep her calm and positive when shots aren’t coming.” Brittany decided to give up her amateur status and turn pro after graduating from Ball State and she has not experienced much glamour. “It’s lonely on the road, I miss my family and there’s not much money at this stage. I have to make my own schedule, be disciplined to practice and workout and find places to stay when I’m in an unfamiliar town for a tournament. But I love it.” Now in her second year on the Symetra Tour, Brittany has the chance to be a big shot in her hometown with her Daddy Caddy in tow. Both are no longer rookies and have learned some valuable lessons marching along the fairway, “Last summer, I let a ‘just don’t leave it short’ comment slip on the putting green after we lined up her putt. She ran it by two feet and I got a glare that could kill. Thankfully, she made the putt coming back,” recalled Kelly. “A few weeks

Round and Round We Go

By Tom Britt

A new roundabout is being constructed at the corner of Brooks School and Fall Creek Roads by the Town of Fishers, and residents are speaking up. I posted the plan on our “atGeist Community Website” page on Facebook and received over 50 comments. Here is a sampling of what Facebook followers think about the plan. Post your comments at www.Facebook.com/atGeist. Mike Gill: Great idea! Jeff Knurek: Makes sense to me. Nancy Lukes Henning: My parents live on sailplace and hate the idea! Lisa Overbeck Porter: Love it. Need one at mollenkompf and fall creek too. Steve King: Looks fine. Would this intersection be closed for 4 months like 96th and Fall Creek was? That would be a real problem. Jessica Aguilar: Huge fan of roundabout (just make sure they remember to plan for the “trail” traffic too - Fishers has not done a great job of marking trails - ie stop, yield, etc - for user safety) Jason Brooks: It’s probably a good idea, but judging from the picture it’s both too small and inbound traffic doesn’t have enough of a curve to make the vehicles slow before entering the rotary. Consider Hazel Dell road at 126th Street. The reason it’s so dangerous is because vehicles are not forced to slow before entering coupled with the fact that driving. Bruce Morton: Hate it. Too much down time for construction. Too confusing to out of town folk. Not much of a plus for a working intersection. Josh Spaulding: Why? There is no need. That intersection is never clogged. Would be a complete waste of tax payer’s money.

Amanda Wagner: Bad idea because people don’t know how they work I have seen more people almost hit each other at the one at 96. Heather Birk Moore: Not necessary. The stoplight is just fine. Would like to have the money spent on sidewalks around Geist. Especially connecting bridge to admirals bay on carrol rd. The construction for round about would be a nightmare! Susan Baker Brandon: Seems like an unessessary improvement that will have serious impact on property values of homes. Not in favor! I use that intersection multiple times a day and see no need to change it! How about a smart light system?

Shane Dishman: I don’t see the point. I’ve never noticed any traffic jams at this light. Am I wrong? Angie Commorato: Not sure why it is needed. Maybe I am not at the light at the right time, but I have never seen the backups. I know that the neighborhoods and businesses around this will have a real fun time pulling on to Fall Creek during busy times. Kandie Dinger: Pretty soon stop lights will be obsolete... we’ll just be going round and round everywhere we go...

Jeanine Lugo: I like roundabouts, in general. However, that intersection just isn’t busy enough to warrant one. Waste of money. Sure hope they don’t work on it the same time they are working on 79th/82nd street widening. Or we will all be forced to use Olio Rd to get out of the subdivisions! Bill French: It is worthwhile progress. One is needed at the intersection of Fall Creek and Carroll Rd where the existing light systems fails to properly regulate traffic flow.

Michele Lucas McGraw: unnecessary. enough with the roundabouts already! Woody Roeschlein: Looks fine but they should make Fall Creek all 4 lanes, too (which they eventually will) at the same time. Kristen Gill: Oh sheesh...we are all going to be dizzy drivers at the rate they’ve been putting in these roundabouts Evan Morgan: Ought to be fun for anyone hauling a boat to/from the Sailing Club or Geist Marina Dawn Kramer-Baker: Waste of money. Vern Roach: The roundabouts have overall, been a great addition in Carmel. Granted, there are some people whose uncertainty or failure to learn protocall lead to some stressful moments. But they sure facilitate better traffic flow.

Aerial view of the planned roundabout at Fall Creek and Brooks School Roads. The project also includes paving Fall Creek Road south to the entrance to Holy Spirit at Geist and widening the sidewalk from Sail Place to Bridgewater.

Fishers Freedom Festival Looking to Award $4,000 in Scholarships Up to four $1,000 scholarships are available to youth that reside within the Hamilton Southeastern school district to use for their continuing education after high school. The Fishers Freedom Festival is accepting applications for the “Ken Wright Community and Life Scholarship” award which was developed to encourage youth to volunteer their time and talents to their community. All winners will be awarded a $1,000 check payable to the student at their school’s awards program held in May. These checks must be used by the student towards college expenses. The scholarship applications are judged on a point-based system. Completeness and neatness of the application are taken into consideration. Entries are judged on the following criteria: • Must reside in Wayne, Fall Creek or Delaware Townships and registered as a senior student in any high school level institution or home schooling.

Meet the dentists from Fall Creek Dentistry, Dr. Angela Greenaway, D.D.S. and Dr. Stephanie Wright, D.D.S., on TownePost.tv. Dr. Wright was a dental assistant and decided to attend Indiana University to become a dentist. She became classmates with Dr. Greenaway, and upon graduation they decided to open a practice together here at Geist on the corner of Brooks School and Fall Creek Roads (above Jonah’s Market). To watch their 2:00 min. video, go to TownePost.tv.

• Good attendance record. All completed applications must be postmarked or received in person by April 15. Applications are available at www.fishersfreedomfestival.org (click on “Information,” then “Scholarship”) and can be turned in at the Fishers Freedom Festival office at 8591 East 116th Street in Fishers which is on the south side of 116th Street behind Fritz in Fishers car dealership and Gallery 116. They may also be mailed to Fishers Freedom Festival, P.O. Box 930, Fishers, IN 46038. Ken Wright was a prominent figure in Fishers and Hamilton County from being involved in numerous organizations and activities. In 1989, Ken received the third Fishers Key to the Town Award in recognition for efforts to improve Fishers’ quality of life. He had also been a member of the Festival Committee for years prior to his passing. This scholarship was established in 1998 in his honor.
