Exercise and Prevention By Jimmy Girot III What if the best medicine of all isn’t manufactured and widely distributed but instead, is merely a structured exercise regimen? This is the case for Geist resident Marty Bessert, a surgical nurse who wants to give you a new “prescription”. Marty is a beloved training client of mine—together we discussed fitness, health, and the idea of exercise as medicine. What major factors were involved in your decision to live an active lifestyle and to begin an exercise regimen? Marty: “For me, it’s all about prevention—I am 61 years old and work long, physically taxing days so I wanted to strengthen my shoulders and improve my balance. After exercising in a large group setting, I quickly realized I needed a more individually-tailored program.” How frequently do you exercise now and what type of exercise? Marty: “I exercise regularly three days each week. I do resistance training, yoga, walking, and massage therapy.” What are some challenges you have encountered within your exercise regimen and how did you address them? Marty: “The most difficult challenge has been my limited motivation and energy due to the nature of my job. I had 8

to accept that it was fine for me to exercise only on days I didn’t work, which is three days per week.” I know you are a surgical nurse and enjoy a lot of active hobbies—how do you feel exercise has enhanced your life, both personally and professionally? Marty: “Well personally, I feel great! It really is addictive! I have broken both knee caps so professionally, my exercise regimen is all about preventing worksite injury. We focus a lot on balance and strength.” What advice would you give someone who may be hesitant to being exercising? Marty: “More than anything, personal trainers are not all about just losing weight. Don’t be afraid to try a new exercise program—it will improve your quality of life! I would suggest people around my age to speak with a qualified trainer and explore their options.” The health and fitness industry is saturated with unrealistic, intimidating, and frankly erroneous notions. There are no secrets to personal health. Marty is an example of someone who has a realistic and sustainable approach to healthy living. In a society that demands the “quick fix” solution, I challenge you to explore other options and become empowered like this Geist resident.

Tangy, Tropical Salmon on the Grill By Amy von Eiff Grilled Salmon with mango salsa is a popular item on my menu but rarely made in the home. These two items are an easy match to make the dish tangy and tropical.

Jack daniels grilled salmon Preheat grill. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, combine equal parts of Jack Daniels, brown sugar, soy sauce, honey, and ginger. Bring to boiling. Lower heat to medium setting, continually stirring mixture until liquid is thickened and caramelized. Remove from heat. Salt and pepper the salmon fillets. Create a foil platter for your Salmon to grill upon by folding all 4 edges of the foil such that it creates a 1/2” lip around the platter. Place fillets skin side down on foil and grill on a low heat setting. Brush Jack sauce on fillets. Cook for about 7 minutes. Flip the Salmon fillets; the skin should stick to the foil platter. Continue to baste fillets with the caramelized Jack sauce 10

about every 3 minutes until fillets are cooked thoroughly. (About 15 minutes or until Salmon has a light pink color in the middle.) Serve immediately.

mango salsa • 2 cups chopped pitted peeled mango • 1 cup chopped red bell pepper • 1 cup chopped pineapple (try grilling the pineapple!) • 2/3 cup chopped green onions • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice • 4 teaspoons olive oil • 1 jalapeno seeds removed, diced Mix all ingredients in small bowl. A common concern from new “puppy parents” enrolling in one of the many obedience courses is, “How do I speak to my dog to get it to understand me?” Keli responds with a classic thought most of us have never heard before, “Dogs are not born speaking English. They respond to you when you teach through repetitive single verbal or sound commands,” she says with a smile. “When this sinks in, it makes perfect sense since it is the same formula we use to teach babies to understand us,” she adds.

Keli Andrea, owner of Alpha K9 University, is considered one of the top dog training experts in Indiana. Recently, she shared with me how she decided to open such a comprehensive, all-under-one-roof canine facility. “When I started in this business many years ago, I was driving from one side of town to another, and one state to another, participating in many different courses and training programs. When I found this location, I saw the opportunity to serve many different needs and to put down roots for my business, which is all about the care and love of dogs.” Indeed, Alpha K9 University is a well-thought out diverse model, which provides so many needed services and specialized training courses for dog owners and handlers. But make no mistake, this K9 University is operated by experienced professionals with proven track records, excellent reputations, and extensive dog sport and 12

Elizabeth Haywood, customer service director at Alpha K9 University, explains how she is working with her new puppy to understand “No/Stop” by using a verbal sounds of “Agh-Agh, which the dog now clearly understands upon observance. “Some owners or show dog owners will use a clicker or some other kind of sound for their dog to recognize and follow, we use verbal markers. Marker training opens a very clear line of communication that the dog understands very well. Obedience is about teaching and nurturing the total canine in mind and spirit. Our obedience approach is not a crank & yank style,” she states. Ryan Andrea, Keli’s son, is in charge of dog behavior and

pack management, an important element of their services. “What I love the most about my position here is seeing the dogs smiling and tails wagging when I am greeted by them. I enjoy learning from them, while they learn from us as well as witnessing all of the different stages of life/training. And certainly the smiles on our clients faces at the end of the day makes it all worthwhile,” Ryan said. Because Alpha K9 University offers so many different and specialized training courses the following is a brief overview of their services: 1. K9 Puppy Freshman Course: Goals of this puppy class are designed for owner/handlers basic commands and exercises such as: attention getting exercises, watch me, leave it, sit, down, and other general commands. It also includes, socialization skills, proper nutritional and housebreaking techniques, as well as addresses individual issues/and/or needs that will help the owner with training. Courses are scheduled every six weeks on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. 2. K9 Sophomore Obedience Course: Goals are to create positive communication between the handler and the dog, while creating environmental sustainability. The handler will learn leadership skills, becoming the pack leader and creating a bond that will last a lifetime. This course also teaches basic obedience commands and exercises such as sit, stay, sit/stay, down, down/stay, walking on a lead, recall, etc. Courses are scheduled every six weeks on Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m. 3. K9 Junior Obedience Team Work Course: The first half hour of this course will be utilized to teach the handler how to improve on commands/exercises taught in the sophomore class, as well as additional exercises such as recall and off-lead heeling while increasing distractions. The remaining time (typically 45 minutes) will be utilized to practice team bonding taught in one of the large indoor arenas where there are maneuvering obstacles, jumping and dock-jumping to name a few. Courses are scheduled every six weeks on Thursday evenings at 8:30 p.m. 4. Improving Novice and Introductory Rally Skills: A weekly Senior level drop in class for trainers and/or dogs with intermediate/and advanced Novice level skill. This is an ongoing maintenance and improvement class that focuses on helping you to continue refining your AKC Novice level training on a regular basis. Regular attendance will prepare you for entering advanced level Obedience training (AKC Open and Utility). Prerequisites: It is for graduates of Alpha K9 U’s sophomore or junior level classes or equivalent. Classes scheduled every week on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. 5. Basic Intermediate Dock-Diving Course: Goals of this

Agility Groundwork & Basic Course: Preface: Agility education begins with some kind of “groundwork” or sometimes referred to as “flatwork.” It isn’t about the obstacles; it’s about what happens between the obstacles as your dog spends more time between the obstacles running with you on the flat than they do performing the obstacle. Approach, guiding the dog, and focusing in on the dog’s foundation and agility skills apply to this course. Courses are scheduled every six weeks on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. Add to all the above, the wonderful dog day care center and luxury boarding suites complete with a wonderful view and, their favorite TV programs. Check it all out with a complete tour of the facility and oneon-one information concerning your own dog and what you expect to accomplish with your pet. As Keli told me, “Every dog is different and that’s why we work with each owner as we observe their own training process in our varied programs. There’s a solution at every level most times. By Beth Taylor With three master gardeners on staff, Wild River Nursery endeavors to be the convenient neighborhood nursery destination for those seeking advice from a professional yet approachable staff. “You don’t need to read the plant tags and wing it, we help you figure out how tall plants will be when full grown. We like to be competitive on price, but our knowledge separates us,” said Teresa Lorton, the nursery’s store manager. Open since early April, the six-acre nursery complex is a great resource for vibrant flowers and shrubs, as well as mature trees. “We’re a great resource for tall trees. We’re so lucky to be in a bunch of neighborhoods where trees are needed,” Lorton said. The nursery store features lawn and landscaping items, including customized rugs and garden flags for Geist residents. You can also find pots and planters as well as fragranced soaps and lotions to complement a floral gift. Wild River Nursery owes its name to the man-made stream that the owners added as a tourist attraction. “If kids like it, the moms will end up liking it too,” said Lorton” Kids get to send rubber ducks down the river to win a t-shirt prize. The river includes resting places where patrons can relax

and take in the wide variety of plants and flowers on the property. “We often see local runners and walkers taking a break on our benches,” Lorton said. Co-owner and former teacher Jane Kay Thomas incorporates many of the same principles she used as a teacher to help customers. “It’s important to me that I help guide those looking for new plants or trees. It’s lot like teaching—you guide,” said Thomas. Thomas also sees it as an opportunity to help her children understand how to manage a thriving business in a hands-on

way. “When people come through the door, I expect them to be treated like family by our staff,” Thomas said. Customers seeking advice can bring in tree samples. “We want to be the place where you find answers. If someone comes in with a tree fungus question, for example, we can learn how to treat the problem,” said Thomas. Beth Taylor is an experienced freelance editor and writer whose work has appeared in several community magazines during her 15-year career. Crafting a freelance business has provided her the opportunity to stay at home with her two young daughters.

Tip #1: Mix it Up

Looking for ways to keep season long color in your yard? “Mixing it up” is the best answer according to Sarah Dykstra, Master Gardener and Landscape Consultant at Wild River Nursery. “A well thought out blend of annuals and perennials can help your garden flourish from May through October.” Perennials are the back bone of the garden, they come back year after year and provide structure to your landscape. As a rule these shrubs and plants bloom beautifully, but rarely do the blossoms last all season long. One exception is the Knock Out Rose, it blooms from the first frost to after Halloween. “With very little attention this shrub is an aggressive performer, almost non-stop flowers in pink, red and now yellow” according to Susan Himmel, Wild River Nursery Owner.

Tip #2: Extend the Season

Adding annuals is the best way to extend the flowering season in your garden. Planting alyssum, verbena or nicotania will add a bold pop of color to any perennial garden that will last until frost. “Don’t forget about beautiful foliage for interest,” adds Dytkstra. “Canna, Coleus or Elephant Ear can add exotic interest to a spot in your garden that’s past it’s seasonal prime.”

By Queenie Bishop I’ve turned into that crazy cat lady. Or, more to the point, my cat has driven me crazy. She was so timid when I got her. She would skitter under the bed at the slightest unexpected movement, or leap from floor to counter to the top of the refrigerator to the top of the kitchen cabinets in the blink of an eye. (No, I’m not even going to pretend I’ve trained my cat not to jump on the countertops.) But somewhere along the way, my angelic little kitty found her roar. Then she apparently decided I needed to step up my game. She made a mental list of rules, and maybe it was my imagination, but I think she tried scratching “Violators beware” into the living room carpet with her rapier claws. And, yes, she did mean me. Through my cat’s reward and punishment system, I think I’ve finally figured out the most critical of her rules. They are as follows: 1. She will receive the proper amount of attention, as deemed by her.

3. A steady supply of cat toys is to be proffered — foam balls, miniature fuzzy mice and plastic rings are all acceptable. However, she reserves the right to borrow, without guarantee of return, any ponytail holders left unattended. 4. She shall be fed twice daily according to her schedule. I broke her first rule almost immediately. The phone rang — a friend I don’t get to talk to very often — and when she nudged my hand with her head, the universal feline signal for “pet me NOW,” and I didn’t reciprocate right away, she squeezed behind my television set and screwed up my cable so all I got was an infuriating black screen with the words “no signal” in the middle of it. I broke rule No. 2 when I woke her up from a nap on my lap to run to the bathroom. When I returned, she was spread out on my laptop and the document I’d been working on had vanished. I thought I was doing an okay job on the cat toy front, but

I still found myself sprawled on all fours under the dining room table in search of a ponytail holder. The clincher that put the final nail in my sanity coffin was feeding time. Because for two years I’ve been feeding her at 7 a.m. and then another little scoop sometime in the evening. But then, a week ago, I was awakened by a distinct pressure on my chest. Is this what the beginning of a heart attack feels like? I wondered. I finally pried my eyes open and there sat my cat, on my chest, giving me the evil eye. I turned my head and looked at the clock — 5 a.m. I turned back to face those unblinking yellow eyes. “No, it’s too early.” I closed my eyes again.

“No!” I shooed her off my chest and pulled the covers over my head. Then the meowing started. Not your average, run-of-the-mill meow, but an incessant, high-pitched yowling. I stuck my fingers in my ears under the covers, but I could still hear her. At 5:07 a.m. I flew out of bed, down the hall and filled her cat bowl. She knew she really had me then. But just as a reminder of who’s boss, she’s taken to attacking my toes under the covers with both claws and teeth just as I’m drifting off to dreamland. So, I’m waving the white flag and asking for a truce. I just hope she doesn’t shred it.

Celebrating Americanism and Community Appreciation By Janet C. Striebel

How Did Her Involvement Begin?

The phrase “Fishers Freedom Festival” conjures up images of happy children getting their faces painted, beautiful crafts being displayed, and flamboyant fireworks illuminating the sky. For Fishers residents and beyond, this hopping, actionpacked, two day event symbolizes continuous entertainment with fun things to do in the summertime such as the 5K Fun Run & Walk, Disc Dog Competition and Children’s Parade. Besides putting smiles on our faces, this festival undoubtedly accomplishes another feat—it connects the members of our community all year round.

One summer back in 1990, Jennifer had a friend who needed help with drawing posters for the Parades. This friend, Brenda Berding, happened to be the former Executive Director of the Fishers Festival. Eventually, Jennifer expanded her volunteer efforts to obtaining more sponsorships and donations. After her friend, (Berding) moved to Michigan, Jennifer became the new Executive Director. She recalls, “My work evolved into finding more sponsorships and dollars and trying to grow with the town and meet the needs of this community…When I first began helping with the Fishers Festival, this area was a transient town but now represents a more stabilized area where people are staying for longer periods of time and

“We try to have something for everyone,” says Jennifer Kehl, Executive Director of the Fishers Freedom Festival. “Almost everything is free. Anybody at any income level can come out and enjoy the day and participate in the activities.” Jennifer has served as the Executive Director for 19 years. “Jennifer is a pretty amazing individual. We all have a personal tie to her,” says Don Dragoo, President of the Board of Directors of the Fishers Freedom Festival Committee and Parade Coordinator. “She’s always looking to expand the Freedom Festival membership into other involvements for two reasons: 1) to keep events continuing and 2) to run them in an efficient manner so that we have funds to invest into future events. Dragoo was among the volunteers who were present at the very first Fishers Freedom Festival twenty-four years ago. In celebrating Independence Day, a few volunteers organized a one-day event with a parade, some children’s games and a community picnic. It was so popular that the tradition continued and has grown to represent the epitome of a closeknit community.

FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS The 24th Annual Fishers Freedom Festival will offer amazing fun on June 23rd – June 24th. There will be 130 crafters, 30 food vendors and 100 business vendors present. The Children’s Tent will offer face painting, temporary tattoos, and all kinds of crafts. Also, K-ID’s BMV will be on site to make personalized kids ID’s for free. The younger children can watch the puppet show and balloon art in the Park Building. As for the older kids, (12 and up) there will be a climbing wall, water balloon launch and bungee trampoline. After 6:00pm on both Sat. and Sun., everyone can enjoy listening to RadioNOW (100.9) with a live DJ, dancing and free giveaways. On Sunday, beginning at 8:30am, a non-denominational 26

fireworks display. Canned goods or new toys will be collected to support our local pantries. Over 300 volunteers are still needed for this occasion. All ages are welcome to help (12 and up.)

other annual events The Fishers Festival Committee plans for so much more than just the two-day jubilee in June. This organization has scheduled other exciting dates throughout the year. As with all events, volunteers are still needed and canned goods/new toys will be collected for local pantries.

Oct Craft Show The Oct Craft Show is like celebrating “Christmas in October” with over 150 juried arts & craft vendors. This event will be held at Fishers High School from 9:00am3:00pm on October 13th. Food sales will benefit the school’s PTO and proceeds from the raffle will support the “Roy Holland Backpack for Kids” program. Shoppers who bring either canned goods or new toys will receive $1.00 off

Here are some of the other worthwhile events/programs: Firefighter Combat Challenge IU Saxony Hospital presents the first regional Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge (FCC) on August 3rd (5:00pm11:00pm) and August 4th (9:00am4:00pm) at Roy Holland Park. The main purpose of this national event is to highlight the skills, talent, and bravery of our American firefighters while promoting an exciting sports competition. This regional event draws interest from the news media, such as ESPN, to help promote capturing positive stories within our community. Spectator attendance is estimated to reach between 5,000-10,000 people throughout the competition. Aaron’s Kids Combat Challenge The FCC will also host a miniature version of the adult physical fitness/firefighter competition for kids (ages 4-11yrs old.) This is an exciting day for kids to dress up in fire attire and get to spray the hose. Signups will be held at 9:00am on Sat. (Aug 3rd) The Aaron’s Kids Combat Challenge will be held at Roy Holland Park. Roy Holland Backpack for Kids Program

Many may not realize that the Fishers Festival is an independent organization, separate from the Town of Fishers and the Fishers Chamber of Commerce. This not-for-profit group operates on a budget of $269,000 to orchestrate the festival and other events. All financial support stems from sponsorships, fundraising, booth space rentals, grants and contributions from nearby area businesses and residents. In honor of Roy Holland, this new program was launched in 2000 to help supply HSE students in need of backpacks and school supplies. Any children living within Hamilton Southeastern School district and needing a backpack (even if they are home-schooled or attend a school outside the district,) may go to their home school and request one. So far, over 3,000 backpacks have been distributed. Fishers committee will be collecting materials during the Fishers Freedom Festival. Items can be dropped off at the Food Drive Tent or placed in any of the grocery carts throughout the park.

Fishers Summer Concert Series Fishers Parks & Recreation will present the 2012 Fishers Summer Concert Series, and is celebrating the event’s 10th year with another great line up of regional and local musicians. Some favorite musicians return, and new groups have been added for a great season of family-friendly music on the grounds of Fishers Town Hall. Seven free concerts will be held from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday evenings in June and July. The first concert will be with Living Proof on June 5.

People are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics to enjoy music, family time and fellowship with neighbors and friends in the heart of downtown Fishers. People are also encouraged to carpool, walk, and ride bicycles to the concerts this year to help with general traffic congestion during construction of the Nickel Plate Trail. Bicycle racks are available for those who bike to the event.

Geist Half Marathon & 5K: More Than Just a Race By Pat Carlini The Geist Half Marathon & 5K is great fun for many. But for one family, the race means a lot more. This year’s race was a family reunion the Null family will never forget. “You could say, the race changed our lives!” said Geist resident Becky Null. The Null family’s inspiring story began last August when her mother thought she had an ulcer and went for a check up. The news was grim. The 67 year-old Sue Sangiacomo was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer that had already spread to her liver. It was particularly shocking since she had a colonoscopy 18 months earlier that was clear.

By race weekend, 23 family members from Pittsburgh, Chicago, Indiana, Michigan, Florida, Tennessee and even Budapest descended on the Null family home in the Weatherstone subdivision. Becky’s cousin Joel from Florida was especially excited — he had lost 50 pounds while training for the Geist race.

“We were told to just let her rest comfortably,” says Becky. “But, we knew we couldn’t do that.”

“Out of the 23 in town, 15 family members participated in the race and the rest-including mom- cheered us on!” says Becky. “My brother, who has been in the Boston Marathon, was extremely impressed at how organized the Geist Half Marathon & 5K were. They just had a great time.”

The Null family sprang into action researching hospitals that specialized in treating colon cancer. They chose the University of Michigan where doctors were able to remove tumors from her liver and colon.

The only tricky part came when it was time to go home. “The crowd was huge at the Marina, so my husband jumped in our boat and picked up mom at a nearby dock. We were able to get a family photo and get mom home in no time!”

“They saved her life,” says Becky.

HSE Softball Standout: Alyssa Buchanan By Mark Morrow Alyssa Buchanan spent most of her after-school time in the spring retrieving balls during softball infield practice, keeping a scorebook in the dugout, cheering on her teammates. Cheering on her teammates and being a part of the Hamilton Southeastern camaraderie wasn’t anything new, but her other duties certainly were. Last season as a sophomore, Buchanan was smoking fastballs past hitters. She was one of the top pitchers in Hamilton County. This season, she was being groomed for even bigger things. Everything pointed to her being one of the best pitchers in the state. Buchanan was the workhorse on the mound as a sophomore, pitching 132 innings. She was 15-5 with a 1.70 ERA and 3 shutouts with a 0.98 WHIP while striking out a team-high 101 batters, averaging 5.3 strikeouts per game. She also was a .400 hitter. All of that was before she underwent off-season elbow surgery on her pitching arm. Her coach, David Cook, a two-time HSE state championship 46

high school softball coach (2007, 2010) could only sigh as he looked away while thinking about what might have been this season. Buchanan was officially released from her doctor to start practicing, that is . . . to start swinging a bat the first of May. She actually was able to step into the batter’s box for the first time on May 11, said her coach. And she was productive in the No. 4 spot in the sectional, where the Lady Royals lost to Carmel 1-0 in the championship game. In one of the earlier sectional games, she was 4-for-4 at the plate. The right-hander can’t start throwing again until at least July 4. But everything will be done in moderation. She has, however, thought all along that she would eventually be able to help out the Lady Royals at the plate. Buchanan said she has a strong upper body. When she was working on weights, in particular benching, she thought she stretched a tendon. Turns out she suffered nerve damage. She had to have the nerve in her elbow moved. Literally. The surgery was successful, said Jeff Franciosi, a Methodist trainer for Hamilton SE and Fishers along with Steve Zook. Their medical group, however, was not involved in the surgical procedure or any of Buchanan’s rehabilitation.

“In my 27 years in sports medicine, I really can’t recall many times I’ve heard of this surgical technique,” Franciosi said. “It’s really complex. You can’t even Google it, and get many answers. It’s really that complicated.” Buchanan broke out in a big smile when she talked about her situation. “Well, I guess I’m unique,’’ she said. “This type of surgery is more common in men than women, I’m told. At least if it had to happen it didn’t happen in my senior year.’’ Buchanan tries to put a positive spin on all of this. “I’m used to playing, being a big part of the team,” she said. “So to go through this and not be able to help my team, well, it’s hard . . . it’s difficult to sit and watch and wish I was on the field. But being an observer, well, I can say I’ve learned a lot about our team, our players, and about the game, in general.”

Sawyer Hitchcock: Geist 5K 4-Time Winner By J. Andy Murphy An interview with the ultimate Geist Half-Marathon 4 time back-to-back winner! Sawyer Hitchcock is a runner. He entered and won the very first Geist Half Marathon in 2008 when he was a freshman at Hamilton Southeastern High School. He has repeated the feat 3 more times. Just finishing up his senior year, Sawyer took the time to talk with us. Q: How do you explain your amazing feat of winning the Geist Marathon since it started in 2008? A: I am lucky to train with a great group of runners at HSE. I use this training to keep me in shape and to concentrate on doing my best every time I run. Q: How many miles per day do you run? A: I guess I can average about 8 miles per day with team practices. Q: When you’re running a course, what do you think about? A: I find that when running, you’re not really thinking so much about things in particular, but you are just concentrating on the pace and the course. It helps to see each mile marker for the time and it lets me know right away if I am on pace. Q: How do you handle the hills of Geist? A: Hills challenge you for sure, but it’s all part of the course. When you come to a hill, it will slow down a bit, but you need to maintain your effort; shorten Sawyer Hitchcock from Hamilton Southeastern has won the 5K race the last four years in a row. Q: How fast was your speed per mile this year?

A: The cool thing about running is it is a simple sport. To get better, you have to run more and work on timing. If you do this, you should improve and have fun running.

A: 5 minutes and 15 seconds per mile. Last year I went about 1 second per mile faster. It was a hot day.

Q: Will you be competing in next yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Geist Half Marathon to defend your 4 time crown?

Q: Have you amassed a few fans since you started running the Geist Half Marathon?

A: I really want to. If I can work out my school schedule and be home in time to do it! Yeah! That would be cool!

Q: Are you going to continue running in Track and Cross Country in college? A: Yes. I am trying out for the team. The coach has been in contact with me, and he has been keeping track of my finishes/times. I love running so this is good to continue on while Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m in college. Q: What advice do you have for a beginning runner?

Golf Haven: Old Oakland Golf Club By J. Andy Murphy Old Oakland Golf Club has a wonderful community history. The original architects were Charles and William Maddox (Chicago), who started the golf course development in 1964. Dawson Development Company purchased the club in April of l987 and have also provided the management services since that date. The continuing efforts have since focused on improving and upgrading the course and the club facilities. In the spring of 1988, construction was completed on 3 new holes (#3 West, #8 West and #9 West) in the woods by Indian Creek. The 3 former holes were converted into Oakland Hills at Geist residential home sites on Royal Oakland Drive. The 19,000 square foot clubhouse was opened in the fall of 1990. This beautiful clubhouse offers excellent golf and social facilities for club members, their families and guests, including the golf shop, locker rooms, dining room, lounge and outside deck. 58

An additional 9 holes were constructed to the south of the existing golf course on hilly and heavily wooded land adjoining Indian Creek. After opening in August of 1994, this expansion has made Old Oakland a 27 hole golf club (one of only 3 private golf courses with 27 holes in Indiana). Green maintenance is excellent and certainly lives up to its reputation of a first-class,

Members are invited and encouraged to give opinions and suggestions with monthly newsletters and regular questionnaires, which allows for continuing club improvements. What does a social membership consists of? Social members enjoy the food services, the social calendar of events and the opportunity to host their own private parties at the club. Guests are always welcome to golf with a club member and enjoy either of the two dining areas. A wonderful Sunday brunch is a near perfect way for families to come together and enjoy the beautiful window views of the golf course. “Old Oakland is also the home course for the Mt.Vernon girls’ golf team. Our ladies golf camps are very successful and growing every year. We also sponsor the Lawrence Township School Foundation’s, “For the Kids Fundraiser,” Palmer said with obvious pride.
