Find out why he chose to live at Geist, the parallels between him and Reggie Miller, his teammate and fellow Geist resident George Hill and his favorite dish at Bella Vita Lakeside.

Thanks to a grant, the project now has funding and momentum. Unfortunately, the tri-county connector project also has some obstacles which could slow delay the completion to 2015.

Rick Goren, 54, built his business initially installing home theater audio/video systems (and still does). Now thanks to the Internet and smartphones, his oerings have expanded to include full home automation and energy management. He also talks about his latest invention, "Movieman."

A Holiday Tradition You Can Really Sink Your Teeth Into

| Lynda Hedberg Thies In our fast-paced world where nearly everything is obsolete the moment it comes out, there is something very reassuring and endearing about our holiday traditions. Traditions remind us that some things are truly meant to last. For some, the holiday means traveling to see loved ones, pumpkin pie, stuffing and turkey roasting in the oven, while for others it means lying around watching football games or planning for Black Friday sales. Why not try a new tradition that will truly make a difference? Consider participatin g in the 11th annual Wheeler Mission Drumstick Dash! The 2013 Drumstick Dash will be held in Broad Ripple on Thanksgiving morning, Thursday, November 28 at 9 am for the 4.6 mile competitive run/ walk and the 2.5 mile fun run/walk.

The Lil’ Gobbler’s Run is at 10:15 am. Wheeler Mission is expecting around 18,000 participants. Brian Crispin, Director of Marketing for Wheeler Mission, says the race “was the first Thanksgiving Day event in the state and is now the third largest organized run in the state with participants from not just Central Indiana but also from 48 states." The event is hosted by Blue Mile and will benefit homeless men, women and children in our community. According to the Coalition for Homelessness and Prevention, an organization dedicated to tracking the number of homeless men, women and children, the number of homeless in Indianapolis will be around 1,600 in 2013. Wheeler Mission is a non-government funded facility that runs their five

BREAKING THE BARRIER Montford Point Marines Being in the presence of Corley and Washington is being in the presence of history itself. Both of these men are Marines. They were both proudly part of a special place in history, shattering glass ceilings and leading the way for change in the US military. For they were members of the Montford Point Marines, the first black Marines. 10

Cpl. Averitte Corley

Before Corley became a Marine, he felt so strongly the desire to serve his country that he dropped out of Crispus Attucks High School, lied about his age, and joined the Air Force. While at the USAF reception center at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Corley saw a peculiar sight – a unit of Japanese Americans training. Corley would later find out that this unit (the 100th battalion of the 442nd regimental combat team) fought along side the 92nd Buffalo Soldiers in Italy and Europe, becoming one of the most decorated units of the war.

FISHERS RESIDENTS

Speaking with the awe of a curious youth, Corley speaks of meeting a Tuskegee Airman in Ft Wayne while he was loading C47s. Corley was impressed that the Airman had access to the officers quarters and was truly inspired by him. Shortly thereafter, the USAF discovered Corley’s true age gave him an Honorable discharge. Corley then began working on the family farm in Hamilton County until he was of age to reenlist, this time with the Marines. Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina had a separate camp for blacks, this was Montford Point. Corley shares that their black drill Sargents were tougher on them than their white drill Sargents. “They wanted us more prepared, tougher, stronger and more focused than any other Marines and we had to be – given what was ahead, we needed the strength and moral character to lead.” Corley was part of the group that relieved the soldiers of the 52nd on Saipan. There he was part of the group guarding Japanese POWs. “I was in charge of feeding 7 of the largest and meanest Japanese soldiers I’d ever seen. They only wore loincloths and had murdered and cannibalized a family of locals and were to be hanged.” In another recollection, Corley describes an interesting situation en route to chow line, for walking toward him, seemingly leaving the mess hall were three men. US soldiers were flanking a Japanese officer who had come out of hiding and was walking alongside the soldiers. Corley pulled his gun on him and told him hands up, to the surprise of the oblivious soldiers on either side of the new prisoner.

Cpl. Averritt Corley

For his actions, Corley was given a promotion and transferred over to Guam where he was over 4 other Marines and was issued a vehicle for transport. At the time, this was against the segregated protocol of the Marines. Corley received little if any friction for his new promotion. He was treated respectfully in his new position. Corley received an ‘honorable discharge’ as a First Lieutenant in August 1947. In 1949, Averitte Corley graduated from Jackson Central High School (later named Hamilton Heights High School), and using the GI Bill, he attended Purdue University where he majored in Agriculture. Corley then went to Indiana University for a master’s degree in Counseling. Corley spent a long career with the Indianapolis Police Department, retiring as a Sergeant, and then worked for the US Postal Service.

Regimental Sgt. Major Johnny Washington

Sgt. Major Washington made a career for himself in the Marines, for he served for 30 years before retiring, having served in not just WWII but also Korea and Vietnam. Not many soldiers can claim all of those on their record and live to tell. Washington states, “Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina, was my home that I would come back to repeatedly for 30 years.”

“The Marine Corps is the story of my life”, says Sgt. Major Washington, “starting with boot camp where the civilian life is erased, establishing a military foundation.” Being a Marine established such a strong foundation for Washington that he claims he couldn’t get enough of it. Few soldiers lived in as many different locations in the US and around the world as Washington has. When Washington and his platoon were preparing for Korea, the experience was different from the 1940s, for this was the end of segregation in the military. Washington states, “Color was never a problem with the Marines. All blood is red.” After 12-15 months of combat in Korea, Washington returned to Lejeune which was his home sweet home that he and his family would return to every few years. Sgt. Major Washington is one of the most-decorated Montford Point Marines, having served in three major wars and been rewarded for his acts of bravery. He was a nononsense platoon commander who was the toughest on his men. “I would be given the rowdiest, laziest group of boys and turn them into one of the best platoons of soldiers. Boys to men is what they would become under my command. The troops didn’t like it, but I did my job.” Regimental Sgt. Major Washington would spend his final months in active duty working along with the Inspector General.

“I’ve seen more than my share of combat, and I still miss it,” says Washington. Not long after this interview, I spent some time with current Camp Lejeune Marines. Having shared my conversation with Corley and Washington, a soldier asked, “What was it like being in their presence?” These heroes/soldiers/men of valor invoke awe with Marines today. These brave, pioneering soldiers are the stuff of legend. Punching through the glass ceiling, their generation paved a smoother path for minorities and women serving proudly around the world. Corley and Washington are members of a small, exclusive club of proud Montford Point Marines. Both are now living quietly in the Fort Benjamin Harrison area, close to military and family ties. “Once a Marine, always a Marine,” says Sgt. Major Washington. “Oorah!”

A Beautiful

Marriage Proposal | Natalie Love Engagement season is almost here! Statistics show that engagement season starts on Thanksgiving Day and ends Valentine’s Day. Deciding to propose marriage is a big undertaking. You have to ensure that you are prepared to make this co mmitment of spending the rest of your life with your mate, and you have to feel pretty certain that your mate is on the same page. If that isn’t enough pressure on its own, you then have to figure out just how to go about proposing marriage because it’s no longer as easy as dropping on one knee and saying those four special words, “Will you marry me?” The first decision you need to make is the type of proposal you want to have. Your proposal can be private, intimate or public. A private proposal involves just the two of you; an intimate proposal can extend to a few family members and/

or friends; and a public proposal, just as its name describes, happens in a public place. Any of the three can be simple and classic or intricately planned out. The best piece of advice I have for you on choosing the right type of proposal is to know your mate. Think about what they like and what will mean the most to them. If you know your mate is socially awkward or dislikes being the center of attention, then you definitely should not opt for a public proposal. No matter how you plan to propose, I have some tips on what you can do and some great Fishers locations and businesses you can use to help you along the way! Natalie is the owner of Events By Love, a full service wedding planning boutique in Fishers. Natalie resides in Fishers with her husband and two sons. Contact Natalie at natalie@eventsbylove.com

The Family Game Night Proposal

This is much along the lines of the family dinner if you love games and fun. Playing games like Pictionary, Taboo or Scrabble are perfect for a marriage proposal your mate won’t expect! You can draw a picture of a ring or spell out “Will you marry me?” using these games.

The Scavenger Hunt Proposal

Lead your mate on a scavenger hunt, leaving personalized clues to get them where you want them to go. At each stop, have a small gift for them until they gets to you and the biggest gift of them all. How to do this in Fishers The new art chalkboards downtown are a great place to have as your last stop on the scavenger hunt. The chalkboards conveniently have the words, “One day I will…,” printed. You can place goals/dreams on each chalkboard with the last one being the big one, “Marry my best friend!”

The Family Dinner Proposal

If family is a special part of you and your mate’s lives, having your marriage proposal happen at a family dinner is perfect. It will be intimate and special. You can even get everyone in on the big surprise and plan a “unscripted” conversation leading up to the big reveal!

The Movie & a Dinner Proposal

Simple and classic but always a great proposal, go out for a movie and dinner date, and you will have one dinner that you’ll never forget. Get the restaurant staff on board with you for a beautiful surprise. Just make sure to call the restaurant ahead of time to discuss the best way to propose at their restaurant and see how they can help.

The Trip Down Memory Lane Proposal

Take a trip down memory lane and reminisce on some of the best moments in your relationship. This can be done by making a weekend of it by going to some of the special places you’ve gone to previously. It can also be done at home by leaving love notes about special moments throughout the house. Either option should lead to an ending with you proposing marriage.

The Massage Proposal

Give your mate a massage, leaving their hands for last. Once you get to their left hand, slip the ring on their finger, kneel down and pop the big question!

The Romantic Walk Proposal

Take your mate on a romantic walk and talk about life in the past, present and future. Once you get to a special place, it’s time to get on one knee. How to do this in Fishers Try Saxony Beach, 13288 Pennington Rd. It is a beautiful spot, and the piers and water make the perfect backdrop for a marriage proposal.

The Fake Photo Shoot Proposal

Schedule a photo shoot for you and your mate. If it’s very unlikely that the two of you would take couples photos and it would cause too many questions, pretend as if you’ve won a contest. During the photo shoot at some point, have your mate turn their back to you for a photo, and when they turn around, it’s go time!

Eric Neer and Stefanie Turk recently got engaged at the Broad Ripple Art Center. Eric utilized the romantic walk proposal method on one of the scenic trails.

How to do this in Fishers Photographer Brenda Staples (brendastaplesphotography.com) is well versed with the Fishers area and great places to take photos. She has a great style and captures emotion in a beautiful way. Also make sure to book her for your formal engagement photos!

EVENTS

You’re Invited

to a Downton Abbey Tea Party!

| J. Andy Murphy Downton Abbey fans, don’t get your knickers in a twist if you can’t wait for Season 4 of the PBS hit show Downton Abbey to begin January 5. On November 17, Dame Rita Beck, proprietor of Rita’s Backyard Garden Center, will transform her lovely Tea Room into a perfect Highclere Castle Manor setting, rivaling the elegant and stately dining room fit for a Queen’s Court! This is one tea party you won’t want to miss, but space is limited so make your reservations soon. Dame Rita and her Downton Staff, referred to as Nippers (reference originated from the scurrying in and out between

tables by the wait staff as they served their guests), will greet you in true English maid outfits created by server Rachel Powell for this special event. Born in Luton, England, the very English Kathleen BennerHart (known to us on this day as Mrs. Patmore) is the Head Cook. Be prepared for a wonderful menu created from her own original English recipes that will keep you coming back to Rita’s Backyard long after the fun of the Downton Tea Party. Be advised: Don’t eat very much before you come as the wonderful sandwiches, soups, desserts and other surprises will more than fill you up. The teas, served in beautiful china teapots, will delight you beyond any other tea you’ve ever had. You must try the honey served with your tea as it is harvested from Rita’s own beehive at the Garden Center. It is like no other honey on the market, and yes, it is for sale! Lady Cora loves this honey! Guests are invited to dress in the period of Downton finery and to be prepared to connect with like-minded Abbey Geeks who will be put to the test with an after party game that awards the winner who knows the most about the residents and servants of Highclere Manor with a stately Grand Prize. Rita’s Backyard is quaint and whimsical by design and filled with unique and lovely retail items that just might make your holiday gift buying so much easier. Before you come, Dame Rita thought you might want the skinny about how the serving of tea began. History About the Partaking of Tea The actual taking of tea in the afternoon developed into a new social event in the late 1830s and early 1840s. It was Anne, Duchess of Bedford, one of Queen Victoria’s ladiesin-waiting, who is credited for first “inventing” Afternoon Tea. It seems the gap between lunch and supper was widening, so Anne started asking for tea and small cakes to be brought to her private quarters. She quickly realized that a lot of gossip could be shared if she invited other ladies to her quarters to share her cakes. Queen Victoria herself was encouraged to start hosting her own parties as a way of reentering society after the passing of her beloved husband, Albert. Other women picked up the idea and thus the ritual of drinking tea began.

Some helpful tips from the Lady Violet “Dowager” Rules of Etiquette • Sugar/lemon: The tea is poured first, then sugar or thinly sliced lemon, and never milk and lemon together as it will curdle.

• Milk goes in after sugar: A nice little superstition says, “To put milk in your tea before sugar is to cross the path of love, perhaps never to marry.” • Pouring tea: If you are the hostess, you should pour. If you are taking tea at a tea house, it is the person who is closest to the pot when the pot is brought to the table. • Proper placement of spoon: The spoon never stays in the cup. • Proper holding of cup: Use both hands to lift both cup and saucer to drink from, and please no pinkies. • Scones: The most practical approach is to split the scone horizontally before adding your favorite spreads.

Did you know that High Tea was first meant to be taken in “high chairs” at the dinner table, thus the name attached? Afternoon Tea is actually a meal that the Manor’s working servants had in the late afternoon before they served the evening meal to the Lords and Ladies in the preferred time period of 8-9 pm.

• Proper way to eat: Use your fingers to eat bite-size pastries as well as sliced loafs, breaking off small pieces before consuming. Use a dessert fork to eat larger pastries. • No dunk zone: Unless your tea party is very informal, dunking treats in your tea will garner a scowl from the Dowager.

This separated-class meal came with cold meats and potatoes as well as other foods with tea and perhaps a beer. Funny to note that Americans think that Afternoon Tea is only associated with the top tier of English society and consists of crustless tea sandwiches and scones. Not to upset the American imagination of partaking tea, some London tea houses use the terms interchangeably to keep tourists happy with the image they have while engaging in an Afternoon Tea service. So gather your girlfriends and plan on an afternoon delight as you walk back in time to enjoy tea and tasty food served the Downton Abbey way. It will set the stage for your own memories of a time that still enchants us all! Who knows, maybe Mr. Carson will be your server! Personally I hope it’s Mr. Bates! For more information on the Downton Abbey Tea November 17, please call Dame Rita Beck at 317-842-0235 or email your request for reservations to rita@ritasbackyard.com. Cost: $40. Rita’s Backyard is located at 12244 E. 116th St., Fishers, IN (between Hoosier and Brooke School Roads). J. Andy Murphy is a published author and works as a literary agent for regional writers. She serves as the Executive Director of the WriteStuff Writers Conferences and Events.

oliday Mart isn’t a craft fair, nor is it a hobby show, says Junior League of Indianapolis (JLI) member Tina Hayes of Center Grove. Instead, it’s a one-of-a-kind shopping experience where people can find some of the most unique gifts for the upcoming holiday season. “You’re literally walking into the most unique mall you’ve ever been to when you come to Holiday Mart,” Hayes said. “It’s shopping at its finest. Holiday Mart is absolutely worth

driving to the Indiana State Fairgrounds for.” Beginning on Wednesday, November 13 and running through Sunday, November 17, JLI will host its 43rd Holiday Mart 2013, featuring more than 100 merchants from across the country. Buyers can peruse women and children’s apparel, men’s specialty items, gifts, holiday décor, gourmet food items, jewelry and more. Holiday Mart serves as the primary fundraising event for JLI, an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing

the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Funds raised at Holiday Mart benefit various projects and programs, says Mica Wilson, JLI president-elect of Zionsville. JLI estimates it will net around $300,000 from the event, and all the proceeds will go back into the community. This year, JLI is focusing on preparing students for academic success and is working with three local organizations:

geist, by As a kid growing up in a Los Angeles suburb, he was a pretty good basketball player. However, it was his older sister who was the family hoops star. While playing college basketball in California, his hardwood reputation skyrocketed, leading to selection as a ďŹ rst-round NBA draft pick. Eventually this Indiana Pacer became a free agent, and while tempted by the bright lights of a major NBA media market, he chose instead to re-sign with the Pacers. His name, however, is not Reggie. 26

he parallels between Pacers swingman Paul George and former Pacers star Reggie Miller are remarkable, including choosing to live in houses overlooking Geist Reservoir. “I guess it’s just history repeating itself,” said Paul during an interview after a recent Pacers practice at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. “We have similar stories. Growing up, my sister, Teiosha, was the big-time basketball player, the town favorite (Palmdale, CA). I was her little brother until I came into my own.”

T

Come into his own indeed. After just two seasons at Fresno State University, the Pacers grabbed Paul in the 2010 draft (10th overall). Last year was a breakout season for Paul who

was selected for the NBA All-Star team. In September, he signed a five-year, $90 million contract extension with Indiana. “I just love the city. Other places can have distractions. Here the city loves basketball, the state loves basketball….I couldn’t beat it,” he said. It was a busy off-season for Paul. In addition to contract negotiations, he worked hard to improve his game. “It was a chance to come back a better player,” he said. Paul also bought a home this summer in Diamond Pointe and lives about eight houses away from fellow Pacer, George Hill. Growing up, Paul told his parents that someday he’d live in a big house on a lake.

"I see the big party pontoons come by and people waving. They call out, ‘Good luck, Paul! We’re happy to have you here!’ So it’s great being up there [at Geist]."

Mission accomplished. “When George [Hill] told me about Geist, I fell in love the second I was in the area and immediately started looking for a house,” said Paul who also shot down a rumor that he and George had been Geist-area roommates. “We just carpool together,” he smiled. Paul said he really enjoyed his first summer of lake living. “[Neighbors] are very helpful. The lady next door is in catering, and she brought me desserts and lunch. It was just incredible. Kids come to the door with snacks and treats all the time.” While he’s not bothered that people know where he lives (after all, Paul posted a photo to Instagram), he hopes people will respect his privacy. “As long as they choose an appropriate time to say hello, I’m fine with it,” he explained. With winter on the horizon, Paul decided not to buy a boat just yet. “I didn’t want to when it’s starting to get cold. Next year I’ll have a boat, maybe a couple of jet skis, for people who want to come over and hang out.” He does notice when passing boaters shout greetings to him while standing on his dock. “Yeah, I get that a lot. I see the big party pontoons come by and people waving. They call out, ‘Good luck, Paul! We’re happy to have you here!’ So it’s great being up there [at Geist].” Prior to the start of basketball season, Paul’s parents, Paul and Paulette, visited his Geist home for a couple weeks. Every morning, he’d see his dad out on the dock fishing. “My dad’s a big-time fisherman…so he’s been loving it.” Paul also has been known to drop a baited line on occasion. “George [Hill] owns a boat, so I’ll call him up sometimes and say, ‘George, let’s get on the lake.’ He’ll drive his boat over to my dock, pick me up and we’ll go out for the day and do our thing.” Paul also shared that George recently saved his beloved pit bull after the dog fell into the lake. “I wasn’t there at the time. Thank God George was at my house, and he was able to save him. That dog’s my buddy.” Paul is a big fan of Bella Vita’s Chicken Alfredo but hasn’t yet discovered Mama Bear’s, promising he’ll pay a visit there soon for a cup of coffee. He’s also found a place to call home. “I love it. I enjoy being out there [at Geist]. You guys are friendly. If you guys would like to come by and say hi, make sure you bring some food! Thanks for your hospitality,” he smiled.

Expectations for Holiday Celebrations | Gina Kammerer The holiday season is near, and what do we hear? Is it cheers of joy? Sighs of stress? Why again do we do this, and where do we sign up to protest?

There are so many obligations and expectations placed on each and every one of us during the holiday season. Why do we place so much emphasis and pressure on ourselves for the two months of November and December? What about the other 10 months of the year? Is it not important for us to see Aunt Ida and Uncle Clive January through October?

Better Options. Healthier Legs.

So why do we put ourselves through so much stress, anxiety and angst when facing the emphasis and obligations of holiday expectations? What drives us to do it all in a two month period? The answer lies in what we know: generations after generations of traditions, what we were taught, expectations and religious afďŹ liations, our own need to be part of something bigger than ourselves, to have a sense of belonging.

Let us not overlook the need to split our time fairly, what with in-laws, stepfamilies, foster families, blended families and oh yes, our own immediate families! Perhaps it is family traditions, rituals or religions that drive our need for family gathering. Let us not forget that commercialism also has its place! And last but not least, we always feel as though we need to pick a cause to help those less fortunate than us whether with time, talent or monetary donation.

www.indyveins.com

While the majority of us human beings have a need for security, familiarity, tradition, ritual and the need for placement or acceptance, this does not mean that what has been replicated for years continues to work in the present. When so much is packed into a two month period with very high expectations, there is bound to be disappointment, frustration and disheartenment. Family traditions from long ago may not be applicable for the more modern families with busy schedules, two working parents, single parents and declining economic funds. Well hello, opportunity! Reevaluating family traditions, expectations and obligations for the holiday season is a great place to start.

Ask all stakeholders, otherwise known as our family members, what is important for them in regard to holiday traditions and values, what would they like to see more or less of and how can we lessen the burden without compromising the importance of the holiday. Try planning additional family events throughout the other 10 months of the year. Start traditions and rituals that are not only associated with the holiday season. Choose a cause to support in the spring or summer months when time, talent and monetary funds may be more plentiful.

It is highly unrealistic for us to think that the holiday season will be any less full of obligations, but perhaps we can alleviate a portion of the stress if we change the direction of our emphasis.

ooking for some help with your home and personal style? Well look no further than the three ladies known as The Gypsy Chicks! These women are on a mission to enhance your style with a unique connection to one another. Christy Ferguson, Gina Kammerer and Taya Millikan have a very long history together that spans over three decades. All three of them grew up in Grant County, not far from one another, and were childhood and high school friends. Then 25 years later, they ended up settling

down with their husbands and children in the same general area. Recently they decided to coordinate their efforts and talents in order to provide a service and fulďŹ ll a mission. Christy Ferguson is a redesign queen and resides in Fishers. Before becoming a redesign specialist, Christy’s occupation as a dental hygienist sharpened her skills for a distinct awareness to detail and precision. She has been redesigning homes in the Fishers/Geist area on her own for approximately six years. As her business has grown, taking her into Indianapolis and the surrounding areas, she has

enlisted the help of her assistants, Gina and Taya. Christy enhances your home by mixing what you have with things she purchases. She has never met a piece of furniture or home décor accessory that she could not make look great! Gina Kammerer is a makeup artist, clothing stylist and organizer extraordinaire and resides in the McCordsville/ Geist area. Gina’s background is in social work, providing counseling to children and families. Some might find her background a far cry from home redesign, makeup artistry and clothing styling, but what these three have found to be true is that home and personal style goes much deeper than what meets the eye as enhancing lives is part of their mission. Gina enhances the beauty you possess with her makeup and styling finesse. She can make sense of your image and style and organize your closet with room to spare while on a budget that your bank account can bear! Taya Millikan is a clothing stylist and personal shopper aficionado and resides in the Noblesville/Westfield area. Previously Taya owned a home cleaning service, so she understands the importance of clients entrusting the care of their home and personal belongings to someone else. She focuses on the premise that when your house is in order, you are in order. Taya has a keen eye for fashion, and it shows through her fierce passion for keeping you classy and sassy! She is always ready to

shop for you, birthdays, anniversaries or special events. You name it, and she can do it without a lot of stress. The Gypsy Chicks believe that everyone should have a nice home to retreat to, no matter the size or cost. They want you to exude confidence and self-esteem with your personal style. The services that they provide span from home redesign, furniture and décor refurbishing/repurposing, event and holiday decorating, home/closet organizing, makeup artistry and wardrobe styling for family/senior pictures and special events, makeup application lessons and personal shopping for home, office, birthdays, anniversaries and special events. Because it is important to The Gypsy Chicks to enhance the lives of families, they will be looking for ways in which to use their talents for charity purposes with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Dress for Success. Within the next six to 12 months, they will open a retail space in downtown Fortville on Main Street, but for now, The Gypsy Chicks travel to you to fulfill your order. Contact The Gypsy Chicks at thegypsychicks@comcast.net for all your style needs. I promise you, these ladies will make your life easier and much more STYLISH and yes, just a little bit easier!

New Development in the Tri-County Connector Trail | Tom Britt Just as local businesses were lining up to do a barn rising for the sidewalk along Carroll Road, a federal grant comes along and saves the day. A few weeks after atGeist.com published an update in August entitled “Carroll Road Sidewalk is Becoming a Reality,” the Town of McCordsville submitted another grant request to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization to get funding for the 990-foot long sidewalk. This time, the grant was approved. What’s being called the “Tri-County Connector” now has some funding for a project estimated to cost $207,915; however, there are still some shorter hurdles to overcome. 1. The grant requires a 20 percent match from the Town of McCordsville and does not cover preliminary work or engineering. Simply put, the Town of McCordsville has to cover about $54,000, and they budgeted only $26,000 for the project. To help cover this gap, Geist Harbours Property Owners Association (“GHPOA”) voted to approve $20,000 from the 2013 operating budget to help McCordsville offset these extra costs. 38

geist C O M M U N I T Y

Geist_November_2013.indd 38

2. The grant only covers the Hancock County portion of the trail which is roughly the northern 800’ of the 990’ sidewalk. The southern portion, technically in Marion County, is not included in the grant. Therefore, GHPOA and/or other organizations will have to come up with the funds to pay for the southernmost piece of the project. 3. Since the funds are coming from a federal grant, the process is more time-consuming and will require a longer timeline to completion. This pushes the completion date back until late 2014 or early 2015, given there are no hiccups in the process. To stay up-to-date on this project, visit www.atGeist.com or download the Townies Super Local App to your smartphone or tablet. We will be posting updates online and to our Facebook page (/atGeist) and Twitter feed (@atGeist). Tom Britt is the publisher and founder of atGeist.com and the Geist Community Newsletter which is celebrating its 10th year of publication. For story ideas, email Tom@atGeist.com.

ong before draft beer was on what seems to be everyone’s tap in town, the Ale-Emporium boasted one of the best beer selections in Indianapolis. True to its name, this emporium of beer has quite an impressive, if not downright overwhelming, amount of bottles and drafts from all over the world. Thankfully, they also staff employees who are very knowledgeable about the diverse brews. Ok let’s just say it, Ale-Emporium has a massive amount of beer! And a massive amount of TVs, something like 80! Which leads me to why your Girls About Town are here! To

watch football! Yes, we watch a little football! Monday Night Football at Ale-Emporium is definitely where it’s at on the northside. The place is mammoth as well, but get there early if you want a table to watch the big game because it’s packed. Our bartender, Scott, was more than happy to serve us up and of course take a few pictures. There’s plenty of room as the main bar is two-sided and L-O-N-G! Of course, the TVs surround you, so there’s really not a bad seat in the house, plus you get to check out all the beer taps up close and personal! The whole place has a cool, grill-pub-sports bar feel. Dark but not dank, cool stamped tin ceilings and wood panels make this a very cozy place despite its large size. It’s a great classic bar with arches, large mirrors, brass trim and of course neon beer signs, making it a great place to watch the game. The only thing missing from this bar is smoke! In fact, there’s no smoke at all anymore. You’ll have to step outside to their patio, but it’s pretty cool with lighting, patio tables and even a very nice fire pit. Ale-Emporium shouldn’t be considered just a bar, however. We feasted on the Hermanaki wings, and can I just tell you my mouth is watering right now? I want some Hermanaki wings NOW! UGH! Seriously, they are the best wings in town. Our tending manager, Kevyn Perryman, tried to explain the fame behind these famous wings, but all I can say is they’re just different! Ale-Emporium uses a dry rub, then grills their jumbo wings

Rachel and Chalene feel right at home at Ale Emporium, meeting new friends at the expansive bar with dozens of televisions. 40

before adding their delicious sauces. Good thing we don’t live closer, or these wings could be a real problem! Succulent but not soggy, they really hit the spot! Kevyn went on to explain that his dad, Herman Perryman, is the name behind the famous Hermanaki sauces. Now a part owner, Herman continues to oversee serving up his namesake wings. “The Home of Honest Pizza and World Famous Hermanaki Wings,” Ale-Emporium is more than just a bar; it’s an awesome dining experience. With many swearing by this Chicago-style pizza as being the absolute best in town, this place is a sure crowd pleaser. Your Girls About Town will be back to try out that honest pizza everyone raves about and maybe some more wings…Aaaahhhh there goes my mouth watering again! Go get yourself some wings and beer, then tell the nice folks we sent you! Get there early for Monday Night Football as there’s always a sea of Luck jerseys to swim through! CHEERS!! Wait! Don’t forget to find the baby pink elephant named Baby Tusko! Go ahead, we dare you to ride him! Although we loved the Ale-Emporium, there are many other places in the Geist area to enjoy the game. We always like Casler’s at 116th and Olio. Casler’s has lots of drink specials

on game day, and everywhere you look, there’s a television! Claude and Annie’s at 146th and 37 is another favorite known for their wings. It’s a huge place and always has a friendly crowd. They do allow smoking if you like to smoke a cigar while watching your favorite team! Detour, the Nickel Plate Deli, Bella Vita, the Grill and Murphy’s are other local bars where you can enjoy the game. So if football is what you want, you have LOTS of awesome choices in the Geist area!

grew up on the southside of Chicago, so when given the opportunity to taste-test Apezza’s new handmade corned beef, I was ready. My inner critic was poised for another serving of frozen meat, claiming to be authentic. The Apezza website talks about freshly-prepared ingredients, so I had high hopes. Note: this is a four-yearold establishment which started as delivery only, and the corned beef is a new offering. Owner Steve Wechter of Windermere has worked for months perfecting the recipe, which takes three weeks to complete. I hauled along my friend, Robyn, and we were not disappointed. We even stuck with Diet Cokes rather than color our taste buds with alcohol. The food kept coming, from handmade breadsticks and wings to pizza and of course the new corned beef sandwich. The restaurant, located at 10150 Brooks School Rd., has an ambience that is pretty ordinary (they also have carry out and delivery), but the food is clearly fussed over. Everything is freshly made daily: the dough is prepared in a big metal tub by hand, huge blocks of cheese are shredded daily, sausage is cooked from a blend of Archer’s Meats pork shoulder and Apezza seasonings (yes, it has the obligatory

pizza.’ The aroma in my mouth was “homemade bread” and cheeeeeeese…and then that Italian sausage. Yes, he did it right. There’s only one other place I’ve found in Indy that has the good Italian sausage, so I was glad to find one so much closer to home! Robyn decided to bring her husband next time, as he is apparently always on the hunt for that good sausage too.

Our corned beef was different than expected…so very tender, it literally falls apart in your mouth. Robyn was expecting it to be chewy, but it definitely was not. It was delicious with a very mild flavor (they provide various mustards). It lacks a lot of the grainy pickling spices I’m accustomed to, but I loved it for the tenderness.

On to the wings…I wasn’t brave enough to try the spicy ones, but Robyn declared them good, with just enough kick, though you need lots of napkins! I had the lemon butter garlic wings which were quite good with a teeny kick of spice. We both left very full and satiated. Full disclosure and journalistic privilege: we did not pay for our meals. t was a passing vision, but it inspired something so much bigger, ultimately impacting many hundreds of people.

Diana Malmloff of Fishers was driving her van and two children from Indianapolis to Fort Wayne when she noticed smoke coming from a house fire. She was struck by the profound loss and potential displacement of a family from their home and how that would impact the children. Shortly thereafter, she mentioned the spark of an idea to some close friends, Katie Richard, Stacy Neil and Whitni Buckles. Being mothers themselves and united through Heritage Christian

So on the Fourth of July, they hatched a new organization, The Toy Closet, with a seven member board made up of an accountant, attorney, IT person, nurse, marketer and PhD in psychology. Between them, they have 17 boys and three girls, so they truly understand the needs of children. Their mission is to provide new, nice things that those children in crisis can feel are truly their own and to know someone cares about them. They’ve provided backpacks to fire stations and friends of friends and are also looking into other organizations that may need their help. Currently The Toy Closet has a partnership with The Julian Center where they provide a minimum of 25 filled backpacks every month to fill a consistent need. “These children arrive

with nothing,” said Diana. “The backpack can go to school with them and includes a laminated tag with their own name. It is full of age-specific toys, games and a blanket or stuffed animal for comfort as well as a note of encouragement created by groups such as Boy Scouts with a message of hope.” In addition, every backpack has been prayed over. Moms clubs, Bible studies, Girl Scouts, Vacation Bible Schools and more have donated items and dollars for the bags. Diana said the biggest expense is the new toys. They are hoping to find more corporate partners for ongoing provisions of bags, blankets, etc., so they can ultimately expand their mission. You are encouraged to donate through their blog, indytoycloset.blogspot.com. Kathi Moore, a career marketer and public relations director, has a natural curiosity that leads her in many different directions and helps to provide ideas for her writing. She and her husband have 3 children, 3 dogs and 3 cats.

NEW PILATES STUDIO TO OPEN AT GEIST | Pat Carlini There’s a new exercise studio coming to the Fisher/Geist area this fall. | Janet C. Striebel Many Geist residents are anxious to visit the new Ethiopian restaurant, St. Yared Ethiopian Cuisine, off Fall Creek Road near the roundabout at Brooks School Road; it’s just a few doors down from Holy Spirit Parish at Geist Catholic Church. This restaurant, named after the fifth century Ethiopian priest who composed both the chant and dance for the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, just recently opened its doors. The interior has a dining area, a full bar serving alcohol and a coffee bar specializing in Ethiopian coffee as well as others from the great coffee growing regions of the world. “We are truly excited about sharing the eon-aged taste, traditions and cultural bounty of Ethiopia with our fellow Americans; it is part of our giveback to American mission,” says Haile Abebe, owner of St. Yared. Upon walking in the door, you see exotic pieces of art spread throughout the entire restaurant. You can feel the vibes stemming from the bright colors and styles within the decor bringing forth the more than 3,000 year old Ethiopian culture to life.

St. Yared Ethiopian Cuisine & Global Village Coffee Now Open

“The food is amazing! It is so different than anything else I’ve ever tasted,” says Carly Williams, waitress at St. Yared who also coaches soccer. Carly and her mother, Theresa Williams, have helped with the Grand Opening. Theresa adds, “The bread is unbelievably good. It’s made here fresh every day.” Some marvel about the actual dining experience. “Dining at this table tonight fostered a new sense of community and sharing,” says Wade Brown, resident of Geist and Roche colleague. To give you a sneak preview, the dining experience in Ethiopia is characterized by a ritual breaking of the Injera (bread) and eating from the same plate in order to signify the bonds of loyalty and friendship. Further, these bonds are shown in the form of mukulas or gursha which translates to the placing of food in the mouth of a loved one or friend from one’s own hand. This gesture serves as an expression of love, affection and friendship toward a fellow diner. The St. Yared Injera is made from Teff (Teff is like coffee and sesame seed, a grain native to Ethiopia) and self-rising wheat flour. It is this pancake-like bread from which various stew dishes are served. All of the cuisine prepared at St. Yared is free of artificial colorings, flavorings and preservatives. Both Haile and his wife, Etenesh, and their four children (all residents of Fishers) are passionate about sharing their culture with residents and friends in Geist/Fishers. If you ever talk with Haile, you will learn something new as he proudly shares many historical facts about Ethiopia which is not well-known in the rest of the world. NOVEMBER 2013

Others have dubbed it as a “gem” in the heart of Geist.

Rediscover the Younger You.

“It is with great happiness and excitement that we share with you that after a year and half of hard work and heart breaks, the dream has finally come true,” says Haile. “The dream has been to build a cultural landmark in the heart of Geist/Fishers. We have called our landmark St. Yared Ethiopian Cuisine, Body and its sister venture, Global Village Sculpting Coffee, the latter celebrating Ethiopia as being the birthplace of coffee.”

The Grand Opening was a tremendous success. “On our first Saturday and Sunday, we were packed to an overflow,” says Haile who is proud of his family-owned operation. “This has been a blessing for us to open this restaurant and work together as a family in making it the best it can be. We are overwhelmed by the incredible support the community has shown to us.” In addition to the dining area, there are two private rooms and one large party room for conferences, parties and special events. All proceeds from this event will go to Riley’s family.

Technology Interiors A Brave New World

| Neal G. Moore . Photos | Brian Brosmer Listen to Rick Goren talk for a few minutes, and you soon realize we’ve entered into a brave new world of home automation, entertainment and security. Goren, owner of Technology Interiors (10130 Brooks School Rd., Fishers), calls it an ever-changing, technology-driven multi billion-dollar industry. “The home control market has exploded. Home technology today is fully controllable using smartphones. For a minimal amount of money, [you can have] instant communication from and with your house,” Goren explained during an interview at his Geist-area store. Goren, 54, built his business initially installing home theater audio/video systems (and still does). Now thanks to

the Internet and smartphones, his offerings have expanded to include full home automation (lighting and security) and energy management (HVAC monitoring and control). Today’s technology integrates with alarm systems, monitors weather and temperature alerts and can be used for elderly monitoring among other uses. Goren explained that thermostat control is really big now, and $500 will get you a complete, self-contained system capable of managing locks,

A lot of people think [home automation] has to be expensive. That’s not a true statement anymore.

heating, air conditioning and lighting. Another significant leap forward is the ability to customize home control systems. Goren said it works with budgets large or small, providing consumers the opportunity to remotely monitor and change home functions. If multimedia is your thing, install crazy-awesome home theater systems. “Basically, if you think it, you can build it,” he smiled. “It’s speculative reality. If you can spec anything, we have the ability to do it today.” Goren said his firm has quite a bit of work underway including installation projects for several Indiana Pacers including David West who recently purchased Peyton Manning’s house. “We have the ability to meet the standards of the highest paid celebrities,” he boasted. Goren, a serial entrepreneur and inveterate tinkerer, is especially amped about his latest invention. Dubbed ‘Movieman,’ the device is the size of a Walkman (go ahead, channel your inner 1980s). It has a computer chip, a screen user interface and membrane keys and is capable of projecting movies anywhere on any surface. Goren anticipates commercial release by year’s end and predicts a $200 price point.

And what of the future? Goren said we’re rapidly moving into a media server world where the traditional remote control will be extinct. “We won’t buy discs but stream media,” he said, noting the shift is well underway. He also anticipates wall-mounted TV screens – now measuring about half-aninch thick – to shrink to three millimeters.

Decisions are made locally by people close to the community. So if you’re looking for professional banking service from someone who cares, call Sherry Hyska today at 261-9736.

Most importantly, he added, is the affordability factor with home automation. “A lot of people think it has to be expensive. That’s not a true statement anymore. You can get great audio for under $400 with phonecontrolled software connected to a network,” he said.

She’ll make you feel right at home.

I don’t know if this is exactly what English author Aldous Huxley had in mind, but we are, indeed, living in a brave new world. For more information, visit TechnologyInteriors.com or visit their showroom at 10130 Brooks School Road in Fishers.

| Neal Moore She was a good student at Delta High School in Delaware County. She was an excellent speller, had a great vocabulary and wasn’t struggling with poor grades. But something wasn’t quite right with Lauren Dybwad, now 19, and a freshman at the University of Indianapolis. “I didn’t like to read,” Lauren recalled. “I didn’t like being called on in classes.” And the hours Lauren spent doing homework were piling up, sometimes until 2 am.

number grids as well as memory games like tic-tac-toe with a math twist. Within weeks, Lauren’s reading comprehension improved significantly, and she was participating in classes. Indeed, the training was so successful, she was valedictorian of her high school graduating class and received a full college scholarship. “Don’t feel like you can’t change. There’s always help for you,” Lauren advised. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

Mom and dad believe the investment of time (driving from Muncie) and money was more than worthwhile. “The most valuable thing we ever did was bring Lauren to LearningRx. There’s no “Whether you or someone you know question about it,” Steve said.

The problem? Lauren wasn’t visualizing the words and concepts on the pages of textbooks. “It never dawned on us that she had a reading problem,” explained her father, Steve Dybwad.

A chance conversation led the family struggles with learning, or you’re looking Lynne McCauley noted that there are to LearningRx, a brain training to be faster, smarter and more efficient enormous long-term benefits for center that helps adults and children students like Lauren. “We are able to improve how they process, recall and in a competitive world, brain training is improve the strength, accuracy and retain information. “Brain training is a solid investment for anyone.” efficiency of a student’s thinking a simple but powerful way to ability by fine-tuning how the brain enhance a student’s core ability to assimilates, processes, combines, stores and retrieves learn faster, easier and better,” said Lynne McCauley, information and outputs that information as knowledge or executive director of LearningRx. “Our brains are like learning. It’s their most important ‘computer’ while in muscles. They function better when all of our ‘intelligence college,” she smiled. “Whether you or someone you know muscles’ – memory, auditory and visual processing, struggles with learning, or you’re looking to be faster, attention and speed – are equal in strength and working smarter and more efficient in a competitive world, brain together well.” training is a solid investment for anyone.” The Dybwads drove Lauren to LearningRx’s Geist office for one-to-one training three hours a week over 12 weeks. Another three hours of home instruction each week helped reinforce training strategies. Steve conceded that he was skeptical at first. “But what Lynne was explaining to us made sense. We decided to give it a try.” Lauren’s transformation started with visualization exercises. She was instructed to create an imaginary white board in her mind and to “place” items on it that she encountered while reading. The purpose was to develop her visualization skills to help strengthen her ability to “see” what she was reading, associate it with auditory information and then transfer it to long-term memory. Other tasks included visual pattern and number cards used to match similar shapes and remember and manipulate NOVEMBER 2013

Quality Meats & Catering at Affordable Prices

| Kathi Moore

Nearly 70 years ago, a small grocery store opened in downtown Fishers and was successful until larger national chains became prominent. Twenty years later in 1966, Ron Archer bought the store and opted to concentrate on being the local butcher shop and meat processor. Archer’s Meats & Catering at 116th Street and the railroad tracks is now the oldest business in downtown Fishers and still famous for being locally owned as “your hometown butcher shop.” Three full-time butchers process bison, beef, goats, deer, pigs and lamb from local farmers. They are the only slaughterhouse and meat processing facility in Hamilton County and Indianapolis. The meat is fresh, much less expensive without the ‘middle man’ and a better quality than what you may find at your grocery store or frozen meat retailer. Manager Denise Weaver explained, “We know the farmers, so we know the meat….We know how they’re fed, so there is that additional level of product control as well as cost control.” You can walk into the store and buy a steak for dinner, fresh bones for your dogs, order a “bundle” (a variety of meats) or side for your freezer, get your deer processed or order catering for your office party, wedding or other event. Catering includes full-service meals with homemade food and disposable place settings. For example, a ham dinner with lasagna, hot sides, cookies and drinks is less than $10 per person. Archer’s Famous Pig Roasts are popular as are the all natural fresh turkeys ($1.99/lb.), spiral-cut hams ($2.79/lb.) and their own turducken ($7.99/lb.) for the holidays.

KIM TROYER Keller Williams Realty

| Diane Harrington . Photos | Brenda Staples Photography Real estate veteran Kim Troyer keeps clients happy by thinking outside the box. For her, it all starts with listening.

“When you’re listening more and talking less, then you’re really getting into the heart of what your clients are trying to say,” Troyer said.

Whether you’re buying or selling your home, Troyer, a broker with Keller Williams Realty, makes sure she hones in on your specific needs. She doesn’t hear just that you want a fenced backyard, but one that will keep a small dog from escaping; not just that you want a dining room, but a space suited for your particular dining room table.

This careful listening allows Troyer to find creative solutions to her clients’ needs. Recently, Troyer had two clients very interested in Geist waterfront property who didn’t like any of the homes currently on the market. Not wanting to give up, Troyer drove them through the area, the buyers cherry-picked their favorite homes and Troyer contacted each of the potential sellers.

“I listen to what they have to say, work with what they need and try to get them the best house or get them the best sale possible,” she said.

Tim Murphy, who worked in sales all his life before retiring, was one of the homeowners she contacted. She ended up selling his house in a deal that pleased everyone.

“I didn’t even know Troyer until she dropped a note in our mailbox and wanted to know if our house was for sale,” Murphy said. He’d been looking to downsize for quite some time, and he said that other real estate agents don’t even begin to compare to Troyer’s energy and work ethic. “We probably looked at 50 different open houses and talked to 30 or 40 Realtors [and] told all 30 or 40 our situation. The grand total of all of those Realtors that contacted us with a client was zero,” Murphy said. “Kim found out we were looking to downsize and immediately acted. The ‛Kim Difference,’ quite candidly, is that she’s simply the best sales executive selling real estate that I’ve ever met. She just makes it happen. I was very inspired by working with her on this. I would highly recommend Kim Troyer for anybody looking to sell a house, especially if they want to sell it quickly.” “Quickly” doesn’t even begin to cover it. When Vince and Angela Ostrowski were looking for a home, they were limited in their options because they wanted to live in a particular area within the Hamilton Southeastern School District. With few houses available, Troyer once again hand-delivered notes door to door. “Lo and behold, one turned up and turned out to be perfect for our family,” Angela said. “Troyer found a new home for that family, sold our home and sold the home for that family — all in two months.” “She worked over and above what a normal Realtor-client relationship would entail, working all hours of the day and pushing the limits when she could,” she said. With Bob and Jan Weber, Troyer performed similar miracles when they sold their home and moved to Michigan. The people buying their waterfront home were required to get flood insurance by their mortgage company — and that started an avalanche of paperwork.

Troyer both lives and works in Geist, so she knows the area inside out. “It’s really important, I think, to be working with someone who is familiar with the area,” Troyer said. According to Troyer, this means she can get you a good, fair deal. Troyer also uses today’s technology to get the best for buyers and sellers. She will talk to sellers about the importance of the Internet if their last home-buying experience was done without it. “I don’t list a house and make it active anymore unless I’ve got professional photos,” she said. Troyer uses a professional photographer because she knows the Internet is the first place many buyers go today. She also knows that if your house doesn’t look good online, buyers will just pass right by it. While Geist is her specialty, Troyer’s no stranger to Meridian-Kessler, Carmel, Zionsville and other parts of Hamilton County. Wherever the client is interested, that’s where she’ll go. “I’m all about the client,” she said. Indeed, she is, Bob said. “We didn’t have to worry about anything from the time we said ‘yes’ to getting paperwork done. She made sure we always knew what was going on,” he said. “Some Realtors will say they’ll list it, and then you won’t hear anything from them for a while. That’s not Kim. She’s a workaholic, very detail-oriented, and her friendliness is contagious.”

“Kim made that whole process easy. She jumped up to the bat and made that whole process go through. That whole problem of them getting insurance down there put us a day behind up here, but she got stuff pushed through,” Bob said. He noted that Troyer was juggling communication with a Realtor and a title company in Michigan, as well as all the folks in Indiana. She managed to get it all done in three or four days and kept everything on track. It helps that Troyer has a team of people in the lending institutions and title companies that make transactions like this even smoother. NOVEMBER 2013

| Janet C. Striebel What if you were the firstborn of a family with a loving mother but an abusive alcoholic father who rejected you your whole life? Imagine being raised by an illiterate black cotton farmer in Mississippi during the time of Jim Crow laws and rigid segregation. What if you grew up never thinking you were worthy enough to gain your dad’s affection while experiencing his emotional and physical abuse toward you but not to your only other sibling, your brother?

I experienced a sense of segregation and a real fear from the Klan in the South. I ventured to Germany during the Cold War where James met Jolande, a young lady, in a quaint little bakery. They comforted each other during a time of great loss as their true love grew. They eventually got married to profess their deep love for each other even though they were from different races and cultures. Yes, they faced their share of harassment as one of the pioneers of interracial couples that is much more common today.

This is just a sampling of the challenges one man living here in Indy has faced along his life journey. He is now retired and attends the Holy Spirit Parish at Geist Catholic Church every day. He volunteers often at church and in the community. His strong faith and friends have helped him overcome the mysteries of his past, helping him connect his hopes to a satisfying future. “I lived history, and I share it,” says James Womack who has written a historical autobiography, Black DadWhite Dad: The James Womack Story. “The title probes the quest for my identity. While explaining my triumphs over insurmountable challenges as a young man, I also describe historical movement of blacks as America transitioned from a ‘separate-but-equal Jim Crow controlled society’ into a fully integrated multicultural society of today.” James recalls in high school in 1956 and 1957 how streetcars and buses had “White Only/Black Only” signs mounted on the backs of seats. Then in 1959, he joined the Army which still had all-black and all-white units. He reminds us that of 92 Army career choices, black soldiers were restricted to four: truck driver, infantryman, artilleryman or cook. Upon first interviewing James, he gave me a signed copy of his book. I thought I would read only a few chapters, but I read the entire book within the next couple days. I felt magnetized to this opportunity to travel back in time to see what it was like to live during the era I had only read about in history classes. NOVEMBER 2013

They raised four children (two sons and two daughters), and their love is still growing strong after being married for 52 years. Unfortunately, due to some tragic events, Jolande is now severely clinically depressed. I traveled to Vietnam and also felt the terror James woke up to every day. I learned so much history from a live source as I turned each page. I am astounded by the obstacles James has lived through from his travels internationally to his settling at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. He defies the odds of how he has turned a negatively dealt hand of cards into a positively royal flush. For instance, when James began schooling in eighth grade at a Catholic school, the nuns said he could not read, write or count. With the help of a tutor, he was able to read on the same reading level as his peers by the end of eighth grade. He eventually graduated with a business degree from Butler University. James hit a very low spot in his life when he faced several perplexing events: he lost his eldest daughter in a semi/ automobile accident; he nursed his wife through two major cancer surgeries; he saved his home from foreclosure; and despite having a bachelor’s degree, he was passed over for a promotion that instead went to a young white girl without a GED who had dropped out of school her junior year to raise three children.

After hearing about a men’s retreat called Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) at Holy Spirit, he attended and was selected to give a talk on spirituality and forgiveness. His presentation ended with 11 men in tears. He says, “My CRHP brothers told me that the world needed to hear my story. This was the embryo for Black Dad-White Dad. I had been totally rejected by my dad my entire life. God shielded the facts of my rejection until I was 58 years old. Both of my parents were deceased, and I had the mental and spiritual maturity to understand and forgive all parties. The men in this retreat energized my soul with the courage to write this story.” As we approach this holiday season, we can never hear too many stories about forgiveness, especially coming from the primary source. James tells his true story with such compassion, reminding us how lucky we are to wake up in America each day with freedom to make choices for tomorrow. He allows us to witness firsthand real love and forgiveness that can only nourish and free our soul. You can follow James on Facebook and LinkedIn.
