NEW CRAVE OPENING AT GEIST MARINA
Amanda and Scott Grollnek are bringing CRAVE Ice Cream Social to the Geist Marina Shoppes.
Writer / Pat Carlini Photographer / Demi Lawrence
If you’re craving some good ice cream these days, you’ll be happy to see the first, new ice cream shop open at the Geist Marina this fall, Crave Ice Cream Social. The Grollneks were dining at Puccini’s one night when Scott’s mom said, “We need some ice cream after dinner. I wish there was an ice cream shop around here.” That comment got the ball rolling. “That’s what made us think,” says Scott. “We do need an ice cream place around here!” The Grollneks looked around for space in the area but couldn’t find exactly
what they were looking for. Then, Geist Fitness announced they were downsizing, leaving a 1200 sq. ft. spot wide open next to Eddy’s Bar and Grill, complete with a separate outdoor patio.
They are looking forward to the opening of the new multiuse trail from 79th and Fall Creek to the Geist Marina area. “That means more traffic looking for some good ice cream!” says Scott.
“That was it,” says Scott. “We found our spot!”
Amanda says they chose a modernlooking industrial, kind of restoration hardware theme for the décor with gray walls and wood tabletops. They signed a lease in May and hope to be in full operation for the holiday season.
Scott says it works out great because they don’t compete with their neighboring restaurants but add more offerings to the area. “We offer dessert after a nice meal or just a cool treat on its own,” says Scott. They also plan to serve pastries, croissants and locally roasted coffee. atGeist.com / NOVEMBER 2016 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 9
The Gollnecks both work full time elsewhere. Amanda, who is from Anderson, is a full-time brand manager at Firestone. Scott is from Southern California and owns Northside Window
and Gutter Cleaning. They have an 18-year-old daughter, who you will most likely see behind the counter at Crave, and they have a new puppy at home! “It’s a busy time,” says Amanda. “But we’ve been planning this for a while, so we are ready!” Crave is hand dipped, premium, homemade ice cream from Anderson. “We just want to be people’s first choice for ice cream in our community! We offer locally made premium products with a comfortable and friendly atmosphere.” Just what you were craving, right? Crave had their “soft” opening October 28. Their grand opening will be the first weekend in November. Check them out at CraveIceCreamSocial.com or facebook.com/Craveicecreamsocial.

Indianapolis physicians, husband wife duo Debbie and Tony Zancanaro opened the Well Coffeehouse to have an impact on people "in their current situation."

The Zancanaros are all about serving both the local and international communities. As much as possible, they included other nonprofits as they built and outfitted The Well. Furniture was bought from a nonprofit that employs ex-prisoners to make the furniture. Store shelves spotlight products from other nonprofits, such as Joyn handbags which are made by outcasts in India. Like the other two Well locations (two more are under construction), the Zancanaros are establishing a “Wishing Well” board where people post their needs, and others can fulfill them. “It can be as little as ‘I need a ride to somewhere’ to we had one girl who was a second semester senior at Lipscomb and could not pay her tuition, and her tuition was paid,” Debbie said. BUY A CUP OF COFFEE, HELP BUILD A WELL Thus far, the coffeehouses combined have funded 13 wells. Once a location is decided upon, on-the-ground partners handle the legal and governmental issues. The Well works closely with Christian Relief Fund, Blood:Water, Life Water International and Mocha Club. Depending upon the site, the building process can be tricky. Droughts make for difficult drilling, and no infrastructure means wells have to be augured by hand.
FUTURE PLANS With the Fishers location off to a quick start, the Zancanaros are hoping that they will have the funds for their first well in Haiti in months. Other future goals include the following: • Taking The Well baristas to visit the wells firsthand. • Funding a well each month. • Creating a second brand of coffee named Jerry Can (a Jerry Can is a water container). Proceeds from sales would provide a dedicated water collection container to families, thereby reducing contamination issues. • Establishing relationships with the coffee farmers directly (most from Honduras) and roasting their own beans versus working with brokers, thus passing more money directly to the farmers. Ultimately, The Well has taken what is many people’s beverage of choice and turned it into a way to pay it forward. Want to help? • Buy coffee and a meal or snacks at The Well in Fishers. • Add a donation to your total at checkout. • Write a donation check and give it to the cashier. • Donate online at wellcoffeehouse.com/projects.

TAXMAN BREWING CO. EXPANDING TO FORTVILLE
Leah and Nathan Huelsebusch have experienced much success with Taxman Brewing Co. in Bargersville. They now have their eyes set on Main Street Fortville for early 2017.
Taxman Brewing Co. will renovate three storefronts right next to the railroad tracks on Main Street in Fortville. Scheduled opening is April or May 2017.
Writer / Matt Keating
Nathan Huelsebusch, president and CEO of Taxman Brewing Company (13 S. Baldwin St. in Bargersville), has enjoyed so much success at the southside location that the Taxman team is ready to launch a new restaurant and pilot brewery in Fortville. "We just celebrated our second anniversary in September in Bargersville, and we are really excited to be launching our second location in Fortville," Huelsebusch said during a recent interview. "We want to expand our northside presence and help grow the Fortville Main Street business district. I think we will draw a lot
of customers from the communities surrounding Fortville: Geist, Fishers, Indianapolis, Carmel, Noblesville and Zionsville." The new Fortville location, which will be located at 29-35 S. Main St., is scheduled to open in late April or May of 2017. It covers three parcels of land and will take up three storefronts on Main Street. Once construction is complete, the restaurant will seat approximately 120 guests and have a private dining room that can accommodate up to 50. Huelsebusch plans to garner the same enthusiastic response in Fortville that Taxman has rapidly enjoyed in Bargersville,

Taxman Brewing Company has a nice industrial modern feel with farm-to-table food and Belgian-inspired beers. Huelsebusch credits his team and the company’s commitment to the community for the success of the business. His wife, Leah, is Taxman's COO of Retail Operations. Taxman Brewing Company's beers can be found in numerous bars, restaurants and retail locations. Taxman has an extensive variety of Belgian inspired beers, some of which are classic Belgian styles, while others have a decidedly American slant. Taxman's house beers include such clever names as La Maison, Gold Standard, Deduction, Exemption, Qualified and Hop Collection.

Realtors? Yes. Different? ABSOLUTELY! $250,000 returned to clients over the last 2 years. Yes, $250,000 over 2 years by a handful of agents is what the Indy Plus Realty Group has given back through their Community Contributors program. Dr. Tom Galovic (Dr. Tom has a PhD!) started the Indy Plus Realty Group in 2014 with the intention of giving back to the community in a profound way. He created his own program, Community Contributors, to honor important individuals who truly make a difference in our communities. "We know of no one else who is doing what we do to give back," says Troy Dixon, aka
NZ Troy, who is from New Zealand, and lives with his wife and two daughters in the Geist area. NZ Troy partnered with Dr. Tom in 2015 with Indy Plus Realty Group. “I was drawn to the Indy Plus Realty Group due to their sense of fun and culture, for we are truly people-centered. The Community Contributors program is a great example of that,” shares Geist Luxury Agent Drew Keller, who lives in the area with his family and was a natural fit with the group.
“As a school administrator, I developed close relationships with our first responders,” shares Dr. Tom, who is a former high school principal. “I feel our educators and first responders should have more recognition, as do our military personnel.” “We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we do value our commitment to our clients. Growing up in a very small town in New Zealand, our sense of community meant everything. Everyone who volunteered with our Fire Brigade, teachers, and first responders were all valued,” shares Troy Dixon, who ran a recent campaign for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, striking a “Zoolander” pose at the Fortville Fashion Show! (Geist April issue)
The mission of the Community Contributors program is to provide financial savings to the people who provide extraordinary services to our nation and our communities every day. The Indy Plus Realty Group does this by providing a credit Dr. Tom, NZ Troy and Drew (sorry, no of their earned commission at closing for nickname yet) are seen out and about at qualified clients.

All three men started in other industries and were drawn to real estate. It’s clear that they love what they do. “This is where my passion lies,” shares Drew, who handled contracts for his business ventures and for his brother, who played in the NFL. There is a playful competitiveness among the team and all have a mutual respect for one another, firmly believing a rising tide raises all ships.

“We have fun doing this,” states Dr. Tom. "We value family and with our business, it’s the relationship piece that makes all the difference.” Dr. Tom, NZ Troy and Drew (still no nickname!) have gravitated to one another based on shared values. Giving back is important to all who are on their team. Working on a stronger community is something that every agent bought into it and are passionate about it. All have their own reasons, but common thread is their belief in giving back to those who serve.

LoKe Bicycles started their “low key” customer service experience in October of 2013 with the mindset “There’s a bicycle for everybody.” As I peeled back the layers of LoKe, specifically reviewing their comprehensive approach to wellness, I soon realized the depth of LoKe Bicycles made them much more than a bike shop – LoKe is a lifestyle. WHAT IS YOUR NEW "MOBILE UNIT" ALL ABOUT? “Our newest addition to LoKe Bicycles is the LoKe Mobile Unit. Health and wellness is playing a much greater role in corporate culture. Companies that invest in the employees’ health and wellness have seen fewer sick days and fewer trips to the doctor for medical illness, and as a result, lower healthcare costs. It isn’t unusual for a company to invest in an on-site gym or pay for gym memberships for their employees. Some will bring in consultants for lifestyle changes. We noticed that not all employees want to lift weights, swim or
run for their exercise. Our goal with the Mobile Unit is to help get more people into a healthy lifestyle using a bicycle as the catalyst. The mobile unit is available as an on-site repair station for employee bicycles. Companies can help pay for a tune-up, either in full or in part as incentive for the employee group. The services offered can vary greatly by the amount of investment from the host company.” DO YOU HAVE ANY EXCITING NEWS FROM 2016 AND/ OR PLANS FOR 2017? “Yes, some great things happened for LoKe in 2016: LoKe Bicycles has been recognized as one of America’s Best Bike Shops for 2016 by the National Bicycle Dealers Association. The Indy A-List recognized LoKe Bicycles as the Best Bike Shop on Indy’s northside. This recognition is a result of customer voting. In regards to our mobile unit, we are currently booking corporate partnerships for 2017.” LoKe Bicycles is located at 116th and Brook School Road in Fishers, and they are open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m.-8 p.m. To learn more about LoKe Bicycles, visit lokebicycles.com or on Facebook at facebook.com/loke.bicycles.

SPACE CAMP TEACHES LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP STUDENTS TO REACH FOR THE STARS Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies
When you have two exceptionally intelligent, articulate and motivated young girls excelling in school and interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), plus they happen to love learning about space, you do everything in your power to make a way for them to attend Space Camp. And that is exactly what Cindy Corbett, the Visual Impairment Specialist for Lawrence Township, did for Alexis Helpley, an eighth grader at Belzer Middle School, and Kierstin Hall, a sixth grader at Harrison Hill Elementary School. Both girls are visually impaired, and due to the efforts of Corbett and many sponsors, the girls attended SCIVIS, the Space Camp for Interested Visually Impaired Students, from September 24-29 in Huntsville, Alabama.
Kierstin’s gratitude was evident. “Going to Space Camp means a lot because I know a lot of kids that would have liked to go, but they can’t afford it, and we were lucky enough to have the organizations and sponsors to help pay the cost of the trip!” Both Alexis and Kierstin gained invaluable experiences and knowledge that fanned the flame of curiosity for the girls to pursue careers working for NASA. When asked whether Alexis wanted to become an astronaut, she replied, “I prefer to work at Ground Control,” but then entertained the idea of becoming an astronaut. “I would be so famous because there has never been a visually impaired astronaut that has ever gone into space.”
Kierstin echoed the sentiment about working for NASA someday. “I would really like to work on the International Space Station and be a scientist to do experiments.” The girls were assigned randomly Every year, Space Camp offers one week, known as “Week 53” for to different small groups of about 13 girls, and both were chosen Visually Impaired and Blind Students to attend. This year, there as the Commanders of their mission. The camp gave the girls the were 217 students that attended from around the world as well as 89 opportunity to work with students from Australia, Israel, Ireland, teachers; Corbett chaperoned. The camp can be quite prohibitive, but South Africa, Belgium, Greece, France, Nigeria and India, along Corbett helped the girls secure the funds to be able to attend. with students from 25 states. The organizations that supported the girls were from the Delta Gamma Sorority, the Lawrence Lions Club, the Lions Club Glass Recycling Program and the Lawrence Township School Foundation. Kierstin’s father provided the transportation for the girls and Corbett to and from Huntsville, Alabama. This was a community effort!
One of the most surprising things the girls learned about space travel is that it affects the astronaut’s vision. Kierstin said, “What I found to be surprising is when you are in space for six months and you return back to earth, it is proven that you lose some of your vision.” Alexis, also intrigued by this information, jumps into the

“THEY SURPRISE ME EVERY DAY. THE COURAGE THEY GO ABOUT LIFE WITH AMAZES ME EVERY DAY." conversation and shares, “So an astronaut that goes up with 20/20 vision could return with 20/50 vision.” It’s an irony not lost on either girls. NASA is still trying to figure out why this happens. Kierstin seemed captivated that astronauts can’t eat carbs up in space. “Gus Grissom brought a sandwich on the flight to eat and share with his friends, but the crumbs ended up in the panels and the keys, nearly causing the entire system to crash.” She also added, “I thought it was interesting that they have to exercise for two and a half hours a day because the bones deteriorate in space. The exercise equipment has to be tied down to the wall, and even so, the re-entry is tough because even after all this exercise, they are still weak when they return.” Corbett beams like a proud parent, having worked with the girls most of the school careers. Helping them navigate the day-to-day challenges and struggles, she knows what a trip like this means to the girls. “They surprise me every day. The courage they go about life with amazes me every day. To see them in action in their groups and socializing was a great opportunity. Because of being in a public
school, they might be the only one that has a visual impairment, so it was exciting for me to see them with so many kids they have something in common with, and that was really for me! And to see them shine academically on top of this was amazing!” The feeling is mutual. The girls are so connected to Corbett because of the journey they have been on together. Their mutual love and gratitude for all Corbett has done to help them is evident. Corbett knows the girls’ exceptional academic strengths combined with her determination to help them find success will create extraordinary opportunities in the years to come. Even though they might not be able to see the stars, they definitely will be among them. "I've spent an awful lot of time here and have met a lot of wonderful people over the years," Farmer said as he prepared to start up the Zamboni. "I come here and work part-time at the Fuel games and in the Youth arena. The crowds are always easy to deal with, and I like being a part of the fun staff that goes on here.” Farmer stressed that the biggest thing for him to remember is to just drive slow and turn right. “That's a big one,” Farmer said. “I'm really glad I don't drive this at the horse shows. "I'm blessed to be with this team, and I'm really enjoying this third season. We have the greatest fan base, and I love talking with them. There is a real party atmosphere before and during the games. There are a lot of interactive things going on such as the face painting, bidding for jerseys and hitting a tennis ball into a goal. It's a lot of fun." Allan, who is also the emcee for The Indianapolis Indians, said staying busy works for him. NITRO IGNITES THE CROWD
I'm excited from the time the doors open until they close."
No one gets Fuel fans riled up the way Nitro, the team mascot, does. He knows how to mingle and get everyone fired up about the games.
Nitro says he doesn't have any trouble getting around the ice rink or the coliseum.
"The best part of being Nitro is being a part of the game itself," Nitro said in a recent interview. "I love the noise, the crowds, the music, the team and the whole experience.
"I just use my eyes and look for fans," he laughed. "I am pleased that everyone is happy to see me. Kids are always excited to see me and want to chase after me. That's

great because I'm like a big kid myself." Nitro likes to keep his true identity as secret as he can. He says he's like a super hero. He wants to keep people guessing. He's usually good at getting around, but he does have a mishap now and then. "I fell down behind the Zamboni machine one night, hit the wall and fell down. I had a hard time getting back up, and the audience roared with laughter. They loved it. I grabbed on to the back of the Zamboni and was dragged across the ice. They laughed even more." Nitro, who graduated from the University of Arkansas, said he hasn't seen the Netflix comedy "Mascots" yet, but he says many of his mascot buddies appear in it. "I would really love to see it," he stated. "I've heard it's very funny. I hope it shows how much fun it is to be a mascot."
PILOTING FROM WAY UP HIGH
Spencer Stevens has a bird's eye view of all the Fuel game intermissions from his post in the rafters. He watches from a lofty position as he pilots a 16-foot blimp with his remote control. "The crowd loves it, and I enjoy looking for a fan who is not paying attention, so I can land the blimp near his or her head," Stevens said. "I also fill the blimp with prizes and drop free tickets, Chickfil-A gift cards and Community Health Network information. I also chase after Nitro and hit him in the back of the head with the blimp." Stevens works at Hobby Shop RC (Radio Control), 1102 S. Franklin Rd., Suite A, Indianapolis. He pilots the blimp with his dad, Marty, and John Gaither, who also pilots a blimp at the Indianapolis Colts games.

PURDUE UNIVERSITY CREATES STEM INSPIRED HIGH SCHOOL IN INDIANAPOLIS Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies
On October 3, 2016, Purdue University announced the launch of a unique partnership between Indianapolis Public Schools and the city of Indianapolis that will result in a STEM focused charter school. Purdue Polytechnic High School which will be an IPS Innovation Network School, will open in the Fall of 2017. Purdue President Mitch Daniels said, “We thank IPS and the city for the partnership, which we hope will build a new pathway to Purdue and to successful careers for future students from downtown Indianapolis. Students enrolled in the school, which will be located in the former PR Mallory building at 3029 E. Washington Street but during renovation of that location, the inaugural class will have temporary residence nearby at 201 S. Rural Street.” Mayor Joe Hogsett is thrilled for the partnership and investment Purdue is making in the community. “When the doors to the
school open in a little more than a year, we will be doing more than merely putting Indianapolis kids in a high quality educational environment, we will be heling the Young mean and women from Englewood and other Eastside neighborhoods reach their full potential, prepared for today’s fast-moving economy.” IPS Superintendent, Lewis Ferebee is thrilled with the partnership and shared that, “it is certain to have a profound impact on IPS students, our educators and our community.” He further added, “With the expertise of Purdue’s faculty and research, we have the opportunity to inspire students and unlock their limitless potential.” The school has been in the development stage for over a year. The high school curriculum will mirror the Purdue Polytechnic Institute on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus and will serve as a pipeline to the college. Applications are available through the high schools website at https://pphsi.purdue.eud/(Https://pphsi.purdue.edu/) and are being accepted from October 3, 2016 through February 3, 2017. Students who live within IPS boundaries will have first preference for spaces.

(Left to right) Missy Tennant is looking to take the reigns from John and Doreen Long at Davant Indy.
DAVANT: IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING Writer / Pete Walkey Photographer / Demi Lawrence
After building a successful marketing business over the past 30 years, former professional drag racer John Long and his wife Doreen are excited about the future. “We hired right, put people in the right places and created a family atmosphere where it was more fun than work. Our success is tied to our people,” said John. They have been longtime supporters of many community organizations, including the Geist Half Marathon. The Longs are transitioning their business to a very enthusiastic Missy Tennant who has worked with them for the past 12 years. “The new name is Davant, even though it’s the same company, products, services and people,” said Doreen. John will shift into an advisory role for Missy, and Doreen will continue to be involved full-time, working with her current and potential clients. John will also take time to “repurpose,” most likely while riding his Harley. Missy came to the company in an unusual way. Ten years ago, her husband Rod was an employee for the Longs. He developed lung cancer, so Missy came in as Rod’s assistant
to help out. John and Doreen put a recliner in his office, so he could rest after chemo treatments. As Missy became more involved with Rod’s work, it was evident that she would be a great fit in a full-time capacity.
and friends, are local business owners who live, work and play in this community. Our commitment to Indianapolis and its surrounding areas goes beyond doing business.”
“Missy has done an excellent job working full-time and raising two kids on her own,” said John with a fatherly pride. “She has that entrepreneurial spirit and is going to do a great job. It’s like selling the business to our daughter.”
e Davant team members are active in Th the community as well. Dave volunteers at The Caring Place of Indianapolis. Missy volunteers with Outreach Inc., while also staying active on the Advisory Board of VOA and the Domestic Violence Network. Missy is also a Domestic Violence Advocate within Hancock County and serves as the chair of the Faith Based Committee. Davant continues to provide services locally and globally with their mission trips, wrapping presents for local organizations, helping with food drives and providing for the hungry. “We believe in sharing the blessings we have received and are proud that we have such a caring team,” said Missy.
The name Davant is a combination of Missy’s last name and General Manager Dave Beattie’s name. It means “blessed by God.” And after spending time with John, Doreen and Missy, it’s evident that faith, family and fun are the fuel for their professional and personal lives. They talked of mission trips to Haiti and community involvement. Businesses and nonprofits are only as strong as the communities that surround them. By embracing this, Davant has formed InkIndy, a program that will reach out through the impact of color and design. “We, like many of our clients, partners 40 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2016 / atGeist.com

Wine Down at Geist DANIEL’S VINEYARD
Writer / Chalene Braun Photography / Natalie Weber & Chalene Braun
The long, hot days of summer around Geist seem to end too soon for avid boaters and outdoor enthusiasts, yet for some this year, it has seemed to be all too long. Why's that? Because there's a soft aroma of wine in the air as local enthusiasts await the opening of the brandnew production and wine tasting facility at Daniel's Vineyard! Six years ago, the Cook family of seven planted their first grapes with the hopes of growing a vineyard to sell the
grapes. They quickly learned that the surrounding communities loved their setting and location and were asking for more ... a place to unwind and drink local wine in a beautiful 80-acre setting! The Cooks, along with many friends and family and that very same community base, came together and will soon see their newest dream become a reality with the opening of Daniel's Family Vineyard and Winery this fall! At the vineyard's third Cellar Club release party in May, the introduction of four new wines afforded eager members a glimpse 44 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2016 / atGeist.com
into the new production and wine tasting facility that will be the face of Daniel's Family Vineyard and Winery. Friends, family and Cellar Club members were able to taste all four of the new wines released with magical small-bite pairings while touring the new facility. Glass walls will provide a dramatic backdrop of the high-tech production facility behind the 50' wine tasting bar where, once opened, visitors will be able to sample wines and enjoy a pizza or small bite from the fullyequipped wood-burning kitchen. The Cooks' eclectic design is a self-admitted
work-in-progress that is intended to provide a barn warehouse feel with flexible usage space. The two-story facility will house the corporate offices upstairs, a tremendous 325-plus capacity banquet hall and a fully-furnished chic and unique bridal suite for weddings and family gatherings. The large 15' deep covered balconies will wrap both levels, providing a majestic view overlooking the entire vineyard. Painstakingly planted in perfectly straight rows of eight different varieties of grapes, the vineyards are producing 15 high quality varieties of wine.

Four Day Ray owners (left to right) Brian Graham, Chris Welsh , Mitch Ackerman and Matt Troyer wanted to bring a landmark brewery to downtown Fishers.
Writer / Kara Kavensky . Photographer / Brian Brosmer 48 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2016 / atGeist.com
“Four Day Ray” was a nickname given to a railroad worker who called off work one day a week. The acronym FDR also pays homage to our 32nd President who, during his first year in office, ratified the 21st Amendment and brought an end to prohibition. A new brewery in the Nickel Plate District of Fishers pays homage to both by borrowing their name and initials for a new venture centered around craft beer and a gastropub bistro.
the brewing formulas. Graham created the recipes, and the team tested their brews for over two years to create a solid, scalable product. Once confident with their results, the concept of a full production facility and complementing services were added. Troyer and Welsh bring their own acumen to the team, handling the real estate and business elements for the venture.
The founders of FDR settled upon the Nickel Plate District after extensive Four Day Ray brings together beer lovers searching for an ideal location. The team Brian Graham, Mitch Ackerman, Matt Troyer aspired to create more than a production and Chris Welsh. The idea originated with facility. A certified beer judge, Graham sought a professional brewer to complement “We felt it was important to put this his concept. He found Ackerman online together where we live,” states Troyer. “The via probrewer.com. “We share a similar location is perfect, and we wanted to do philosophy to brewing,” says Graham of something that we knew this area needed.” Ackerman. “Mitch was looking to relocated to the Midwest, and this presented the The building is 20,000 sq. ft. family-friendly,” says Welsh, a father of five. In addition to filling their own taps, FDR is supplying to other restaurants and bars. They are achieving this with a 3 vessel, 15bbl brewhouse, along with 4 fermenters and 2 bright tanks which gives them a production capacity of about 2000 bbls per year. “I am excited about FDR and confident with the direction we are going,” says Ackerman. Four Day Ray may be new, but the experience is one that resonates from a seasoned, experienced team. “We make an exceptional product,” states Graham. “No cutting corners. With our technical brewing process, if the flavor is off, we make adjustments and begin again. We strive for consistency and have an exceptionally high standard of quality.”
“There’s a story behind every brew."
The attention to detail put into the Four Day Ray concept extends from the brewing process to noticeable features throughout the building. From the hooks and charging outlets under the bar to the A/V options in the meeting room on the second floor and the walkup access for patrons for growlers, the consideration for a positive customer experience is clearly a priority. The wood beams, lighting and natural accents give a feel of Old World industry. Industrial garage doors open to outdoor patio seating with heat lamps, a fire pit and retractable awnings for sunshade. Another thoughtfully planned experience is the walkup line. Customers can grab a growler or retail merchandise “to go” without disrupting the service staff in the main dining room or at the bar. Experienced Chef Andrew Miller, a graduate of the College of Culinary Arts from Johnson & Wales University, was
brought on to lead the scratch kitchen. “We are a world bistro, featuring globally inspired food. We will add and change items as we grow and welcome customer feedback,” shares Miller. The ciceronetrained staff is ready to match a beverage with any food item on the menu and ready to assist with the extensive craft offerings with spirits as well. Of the 18 taps to fill inside the bar, FDR has produced Track Jumper IPA, Doonright Scottish Ale, Laplander Blonde, Coffee Blonde, Brick Arch Porter, Inauguration Day Stout, Take The Day Mild, Identity Crisis, Coffee Blonde and Malty Mofo Stout so far. Guest bottles will be available. The guys warn to be careful around them, for friends and customers are fair game for inspiring a beer. “Naming the beers is part of the fun. For instance, we have had an eccentric electrician named Igor,” says Ackerman. “For winter, we are making a 50 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2016 / atGeist.com
Russian Imperial Stout called Prince Igor.” Their Laplander Blonde, which inspired a mural on the side of the building that’s drawing some attention, is an early popular brew. “The Laplander is a great boat beer,” says Ackerman. “It’s malty and sweet with a fruity character. It’s a medium-to-light beer and finishes dry with hints of citrus, cedar and marmalade. It’s to be enjoyed any time of day.” “There’s a story behind every brew, and we encourage our customers to ask our staff about these,” says Graham. Troyer indicates the drink selection has a “heavy focus on craft” with Indiana artisan Cardinal Spirits, Hotel Tango and small batch wineries on their list. Non-alcoholic craft root beer and sodas are also featured.
“We are a brewery with a really great food concept. We are focused on a high level of excellence with our execution of this facility,” says Welsh. “Our focus is creating a brand with the ambition of becoming one of the best in the state,” adds Welsh. “But first, we want to make this location a great place by creating a great experience.” If you can be successful in your own backyard, global domination may happen later. "CLUE," THE MUSICAL, AT MUD CREEK Writer / Ray Compton
Control. It has become part of our DNA. All of us seemingly strive to achieve control. For instance, the baseball pitcher practices to control his curve. The salesperson works on his or her presentation to garner control that can lead to a winning result. And the lawyer does his homework before going to trial in hopes of gaining control in the courtroom. The desire to achieve control goes on and on. Frequently, this is the case in acting and directing movies, shows or theater. Do you think Mel Brooks or Martin Scorsese would surrender control of their movies or plays?
audience during the nine performances of “Clue” at the Geist stage on 86th Street. Each night, three members of the audience will select the ending of the performance of the legendary board game turned play. And Williams and his entourage will be faced with the challenge of adapting to whom committed the murder, what weapon was used for the crime and the location of the murder. For those keeping score, the show has 216 possible endings. “It’s the ultimate who, what and when situation,” said Williams before an October rehearsal. “We will have to be ready for some changes. The dialogue does change. The cast will have to be ready. This is real improv. It is really cool.”
Classic Detective Game. Pratt and his wife applied for a patent in 1947, but due to post-war shortages, the game was not officially launched until 1949. Eventually, Parker Brothers acquired the license and retitled the game to Clue. It has been played by millions worldwide. Williams and his partners are bringing to stage the familiar names from Clue. This includes characters such as Miss Scarlett, Professor Plum, Mrs. Peacock, Reverend Green, Colonel Mustard and Mrs. White. Not to be forgotten are Mr. Boddy, the ringleader of the unfolding story, the Detective and another pivotal performer, the Piano Player.
Though the 1985 movie, “Clue,” played to less than raving reviews, the acting list Indeed, that scenario would be doubtful included names such as Christopher Lloyd, The play is a wild and colorful adaption for the directors of such hits as “Young Lesley Ann Warren, Eileen Brennan and of the board game that was created by Frankenstein” and “Raging Bull.” And that Englishman Anthony Pratt in 1944 as family Madeline Kahn. “It’s fun music,” said Block who teaches piano in the Geist area. “You think of cartoon music. There is a lot of dancing and not many solo performances. Our goal is to make it fun.” In a slight twist, the detective is played by a female, Celeste Hattrick, a senior at IUPUI who has performed in numerous local cabarets, including appearances in “Hairspray” and “Legally Blonde.” “I am really excited about the role,” said Hattrick, 23. “I have never had a role this big, and so it is a challenge. My role is fun. My character seems to be a pain in the butt as she will do whatever it takes to find the killer.” Hattrick admits the key to the possibility of adapting to the numerous script changes is “teamwork. We have to work together when we have the different endings.” The “puppeteer” of the story will be Mr. Boddy, played by Russell Watson.
“He controls the game pieces,” Williams said. Of course, a key to the success of the play falls into the lap of Williams, who directed “Odd Couple” last year at Mud Creek and who has been involved in musicals such as “Little Shop of Horrors” (he played the voice of Audrey, the giant plant), “Man of LaMancha” and “How to Succeed in Business Without Trying.” “I would rather be on stage,” admitted Williams, 47 and a one-time student at Ball State. “But it is entertaining too as a director or as actor to help people forget the real world. When a show clicks together, there is a rush.” Williams admits he has been on a controlled rush since holding auditions and starting practices.
Advance sales for the performances – starting Friday, November 18 and concluding Saturday, December 3 – have been brisk, said Williams. “This is really a family show,” said Williams. “This is for the big kids (adults) and the little kids. Some things may go over the kids’ heads, but it’s a terrific show. There is something for everybody,” including dance, song and brilliant colors. “I am a perfectionist,” confessed Williams. “I will be harder on myself than anybody else. I will play close attention to details.” And the attention to detail will go a long way in helping everyone figure out the who, what and where of this bigger than life game.
“Our group is ready to go,” he said. “They have worked very hard to put everything together.”

BUTLER UNIVERSITY MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH CHRIS HOLTMANN
Writer / Kara Kavensky Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Chris Holtmann grew up in Kentucky where horse farms and basketball hoops are most prominent. Holtmann has always loved sports, especially basketball. “I loved the games and practices when I was a kid and still do,” shares Holtmann. “Beyond that, I didn’t have much of a social life.” Holtmann played basketball at Taylor University for Hall of Fame Coach Paul Patterson. Patterson was connected to Butler and knew Todd Lickliter and Brad Stevens. This link transcended to Holtmann who aspired to being a coach. He returned to Taylor, taking his first assistant coaching position. Holtmann then went on to be an assistant at Garner-Webb University and Ohio University before returning to GarnerWebb for the Head Coach position. During Holtmann’s head coaching gig at Gardner-Webb, they underwent a massive rebuild of their men’s basketball program. In Holtmann’s third year at the helm, the Gardner-Webb team set a school record for wins and earned a spot in the postseason for the first time in school history. Not long afterward, Holtmann received a call from Brandon Miller.
“I had spoken with Coach Stevens about a coaching job in the past, but it didn’t work out. This was a different moment in time,” states Holtmann of joining the Butler coaching staff in 2013. “Coach Miller and I talked about Butler heading into their first season with the Big East. This call precipitated a tremendously difficult conversation that I had to have with my team at Garner-Webb.” When asked why he left a coveted head coaching job for an assistant position, Holtmann replied, “It was the most difficult professional decision of my life, but Butler is Butler…” Not dissimilar to Lou Holtz having an escape clause in case Notre Dame called him up, Holtmann felt at home in Indiana, and Butler was obviously a big draw. “The reason I came to Butler was because I knew the culture,” continued Holtmann. “I simply could not decline the offer to assistant coach at Butler.” While Holtmann was content with an assistant position at Butler, little did he know how fate would intervene. The day Holtmann was named Interim Head Coach of the Butler Men’s Basketball team in 2014, he and his wife Lori hosted the team and coaching staff for dinner at their home. The lead-up to the evening was a media circus
surrounding the circumstances of Miller’s leave of absence. The subject of Miller's health was and will remain respectful of his family's privacy, yet the future of the men’s basketball team and their leadership remained questionable. “A lot of things can go south and take a bad turn when named ‘interim' head coach. I was certainly nervous,” admits Coach Holtmann of the speculation he and the team faced. “And as a head coach, I would now be speaking to my players a little differently than I did as an assistant.” So that night at dinner, concerns, questions and commitments were openly discussed. The bottom line was that no one questioned their loyalty to Coach Holtmann or to the Butler University basketball program. The team and coaches were “all in” and strategized their plan for the rest of the season. “I can't say enough of how accepting they (players and coaches) all were,” says Coach Holtmann. “The buy-in was 110%.” “When Coach Holtmann became head coach, we all just went to work,” shares Assistant Coach Terry Johnson. “Expectations are always high, regardless
“MY VALUES ALIGN WITH THOSE OF THIS UNIVERSITY. BUTLER FITS ME." 56 / GEIST MAGAZINE / NOVEMBER 2016 / atGeist.com
"WHEN WE STEP ONTO THE COURT, WE WANT TO WIN.” of circumstances. We just follow Coach Holtmann’s lead.” Coming off a tough 2013-2014 season in the Big East, the team was ready to prove themselves. It didn't take long. Butler fans had their faith restored with a big win against UNC. The game was a defining moment for Butler basketball and for Coach Holtmann. "A lot of credit goes to our team leadership. It is the belief of what we can do. Our juniors and senior players had come off a year of struggling, and that struggle gave them an edge," says Coach Holtmann. "That fueled us to a great start that year." Before the start of the 2014-2015 season, the coaching staff huddled up in a conference room to discuss the question: How can we make this the very best year
for our players? This is the question Holtmann and his staff asked again this year and will continue to ask. It's their preseason mantra. The players want to work extremely hard to be the best they can be, and the coaches want the players to become the best they can be on and off the court. “We create an atmosphere that is playerfriendly and want to work with the team to build relationships,” states Holtmann. “My values align with those of this University. Butler fits me. It fits all of us on the staff. We treat others how we wish to be treated, and we encourage our players and one another to be the best people we can be,” says Assistant Coach Terry Johnson. “We stay positive, and these are the type of kids we recruit.

But don’t get me wrong, we are fierce competitors. When we step onto the court, we want to win.” Now at the start of his third season as head coach, Coach Holtmann is ready for business as usual. Butler made it into the postseason the last two years with Coach Holtmann and aspire to do it again with the highest-ranked recruiting class in school history to support the seasoned upperclassmen. Holtmann shared his favorite Ralph W. Emerson quote, "Trust men, and they will be true to you. Treat them greatly, and they will show themselves great.” And adds, “I might have heard Brad say that once.” For tickets, visit butlersports.com and follow them on Twitter @ButlerMBB.
