ONCE A PILOT, ALWAYS A PILOT

Josh Reckley has been hooked on flying since a 4th grade field trip at Amy Beverland Middle School. (Photo by Kyle Duell)

Writer / Ray Compton

So what would you expect a thirdgeneration pilot to name his two young daughters? Would the youthful pilot and his wife go the biblical route, choosing names such as Jezebel and Elisheba? Or would the cloud navigator and his companion travel the soap opera path, selecting from a list of names that includes Bianca or Phoebe? Or, perhaps, the thoughtful aviator and his partner would journey down the list of sports names, picking Mia or Serena.

CHOPPER 13 PILOT AND LAWRENCE CENTRAL GRAD JOSH RECKLEY

Well, if you selected doors one, two or three, you were mistaken and did not follow a big clue. We are discussing a man who lives in the blue skies almost as much as his feet touch the pavement. Josh and Dana Reckley named their 3-year-daughter Amelia (as in Earhart) and picked Piper for her 1-year-old sister. (Okay, Piper’s first name is technically Scarlett.) You could say once a pilot, always a pilot. “I was hooked (on flying) after a field trip to Indy Regional Airport (formerly Mt. Comfort Airport) in the fourth grade,” recalled Reckley who has been a helicopter atGeist.com / OCTOBER 2016 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 9

pilot for WTHR-Channel 13 for two years. “I knew at a young age that I wanted to be a pilot. I thought flying was just the coolest.” Mother Jan, a longtime educator in the Lawrence Township Public School system, remembers the day her 9-year-old son bounded home from the airport and radiated with exhilaration from the field trip to Mt. Comfort. “He came home that day and knew what he wanted to do,” Jan said. “He knew he wanted to be a pilot. He told me he wished he knew a pilot.”

It was a short trip to uncover a pilot. His father, Mike, had his pilot license. And grandfathers J.J. Carr and Tucker Reckley were longtime pilots.

me up in a small airplane (Cessna 15). We attended several airshows with my grandpas. I guess it ran in the family.” By his senior year at Lawrence Central, Reckley had attained his private pilot’s “My dad was the most influential in me license. He went to the aviation school at starting to fly,” said the younger Reckley Indiana State where the school allowed who attended Amy Beverland Elementary students to work at their selected pace while School, Belzer Middle School and Lawrence in flying training. By accelerating his class Central. “He got his pilot’s license before schedule, Reckley was able to work as a flight I was born but gave it up when my sister instructor during his sophomore year. The path provided a jump start in building flight (Raven) was born. He was the first to take

“I enjoyed instructing, but some of my most scary moments were instructing students in the helicopter,” Reckley said. “It seemed like the students were trying to kill you on a daily basis. Helicopters are much less forgiving than airplanes and less stable. You can let your students make mistakes in an airplane to help them learn, but helicopters require immediate reaction or intervention before a mistake builds into a dangerous situation.” One frightening moment for the instructor happened when a green pilot rolled the throttle, creating a similar effect to failing the helicopter’s engine. “I took the controls and entered an auto-rotation (engine out gliding maneuver),” Reckley said. “That rolled the throttle back, but needless to say, his ride was over.”

There was also the time when departing LaGuardia Airport in New York when the airplane’s landing gear would not retract.

However, there were occasional rocky flights when instructing students how to fly, particularly when teaching students on piloting a helicopter.

And there have been other hairy moments while piloting airplanes for Reckley. Once while approaching Chicago O’Hare, lightning slapped Reckley’s plane. “The noise was so loud, it made me jump,” he said. “But the aircraft and passengers were fine.”

“You wouldn’t think that would be a big issue,” said Reckley. “But after 20 minutes of troubleshooting and running checklists, it was time to land. We opted to go to the nearest, longest runway which was JFK Airport. We declared an emergency just in case we overran the runway. The landing was great, and everything worked. But we made a spectacle at the airport with all the emergency vehicles trailing the airplane.”

Undoubtedly, his mom’s heart dropped when she heard this story, just as it may have skipped a beat or two when her son was shadowing tornadoes in Kokomo on August 24. “I was getting texts from friends wanting to know if he was up there,” said Jan. He was…of course. “Even though the picture looked dark, we were at a very safe distance from the cell,” Reckley said as he downplayed the situation. “In fact, we were in clear blue skies if the camera zoomed out. We always error on the side of caution, and I always leave myself an out.” Reckley’s career has skyrocketed after graduating from Indiana State. His resume includes being a First Officer at Republic Airways; a helicopter pilot for Freedom Helicopters in Fishers; a tour pilot for Papillon Helicopters in Las Vegas; lead EMS pilot for IU Health Life Line; another tour in Las Vegas with Maverick Helicopters; and now his fulltime role at WTHR.

the aerial perspective enhances the storytelling.”

Let’s also not forget passengers Amelia and Piper. And there is also a 7-year-old Beagle mix named Maverick – of “Top Gun” fame of course.

While Reckley calls the helicopter “the ultimate ATV,” he loudly lauds the support he receives at home.

Ray Compton is a former journalist and longtime sports marketing person.

“It’s been a wild ride,” he said. ”We have moved across the country, chasing this dream, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of Dana. She’s been by my side from day one.”

“He hated to leave home,” said Jan. “But he told us that this is what he had to do to get where he wanted to be.” His experience in Las Vegas included flights over the Grand Canyon. “Someone asked once when was the Grand Canyon dug out,” Reckley noted. He also had encounters with the unusual. “And on my last day, a kid vomited all over the back of the helicopter, completely missing the sick sack.” A typical day at WTHR starts at 5 a.m. for traffic and accident reporting and can stretch if the fabled breaking news calls for aerial views. And there are Operation Football Nights when he teams up with sportscaster Dave Calabro to skip from game to game.

Our children are bilingual, and we made a promise to return to Brazil as often as we could to stay connected with Marcia’s family. This worked out well for them because Marcia’s father and three brothers live right there, and they have apartments two blocks off the beach from Copacabana. Over the years, we have created our own exchange program, bringing her niece and nephew in from Brazil to live with us for the summer and sending our kids to Brazil to live with her family for the summer.” The family had the privilege of being comfortable travelling around Rio and also being American where they connected with a lot of the U.S. athletes like Michael Phelps and made for some pretty tremendous photo opportunities.

This was not an easy task, especially since the family was happy with their community, and Bridges was comfortable in his role as Head of Muskegon Catholic Central, a K-12 school system in Michigan. THE INDIANA CHILDREN’S WISH FUND

HONORS GEORGIA BUCHANAN AT THEIR 25TH ANNUAL “PORTRAIT OF WISHES GALA” her dad to save them for her when she was a child. She couldn’t read it all, but she tried. She kept the papers under her bed by the stove in the kitchen in their flat above the pool hall. Georgia spent her first couple years of high school at Manual. Up until that point, she studied at The Settlement House. As she walked hand-in-hand with friends across the city blocks, her eyes opened to a world previously foreign to her. She had never crossed West Street to the east or south of Maryland until that moment. The walk across the city to school and back each day expanded Georgia’s world exponentially. The Indiana Children’s Wish Fund began in 1984. “Our small staff does huge things,” shares Executive Director Terry CeaserHudson. “We are a local Indiana organization that honors a lot of wishes each year for children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses. Our fundraising is mainly done through unique and fabulous events.”

milestone birthday and entering her 10th decade, she’s sharp as a tack and as spunky as ever.

Born to Greek immigrants in 1926, Georgia Gianakos grew up in downtown Indianapolis on West Washington St. above a bakery and a pool hall. This land is now home to the Eiteljorg Museum. Georgia’s father owned The Manhattan, a Greek restaurant located near their home. When asked why her father named it The Manhattan, Georgia shared what her father had told her, “When my ship approached the mouth of the Hudson and the Statue of Liberty was in view, passengers were shouting, ‘Manhattan! We made it to Manhattan!’” Newspapers would be left on chairs and tables in the mornings, and Georgia asked 24 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2016 / atGeist.com

“The manager at the back door of the Circle Theater would let us sneak in to watch films,” recalls Georgia. “I thought it was a palace with the velvet chairs and ornate woodwork. This exposure to film left an indelible impression on me. How ironic that I would become a movie critic!” When Georgia was in the midst of her high school years, her parents realized their American Dream, buying their first home off 40th and Illinois. Leaving the 24 steps to their walkup apartment where Georgia’s bed was next to the oven in the kitchen, the Gianakos family of six moved into a beautiful new home. Georgia transferred to Shortridge High School for her junior and senior years. Georgia knew, without a doubt, that she wanted to be a writer. She was so astute with this decision that after graduation, Georgia walked boldly into The Indianapolis News/ Star office and announced she wanted to be a journalist. She was ready to get to work. “When I was asked where I went to college, my answer was ‘Shortridge High School.’ To his credit, instead of laughing at me, the employment director wrote my name down and told me to go to college and come back in four years,” explains Georgia. “He said

he would hire me, so I earned my degree at Butler University, and he was true to his word. Later, he told me he did not hire me for my talent – he hired me for my guts. He said that ‘guts is the most important thing in the newspaper business.’” Georgia began writing promotions but longed to be upstairs writing a column with a byline. There were two female writers upstairs; one wrote a radio column and the other wrote the obituaries. One day, the managing editor wanted to see her about a newly available position upstairs. “I thought to myself, ‘Don’t be obits,’” shares Georgia. The gal who had been writing the radio column was pregnant and leaving her position. Georgia was her replacement.

He had agreed to an exclusive with The Indianapolis News, yet she was unable to leave her desk due to the deadline for their weekend TV edition. Cary surprised Georgia by coming to visit her directly at her desk. “And wouldn’t you know, all of our cameramen were out on assignment, but I at least got him to sign a glossy,” recalls Georgia.

The only time Georgia ever felt nervous during an interview was when she spoke with Edward R. Murrow. He was then anchor of the CBS newscast, “You Are There.” “He was such a giant in the industry,” Harry Truman was recently elected says Georgia. Georgia has done everything she can for her son who is now flourishing in his 50s. Georgia created amazing opportunities for him in an age when support was unavailable. Her draw to the Indiana Children’s Wish Fund is a bond anchored in love and purpose. She has worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for children with special needs and life-threatening diagnoses. In her lifetime, Georgia has chaired 30 events and sat on 10 different Boards. One of the events Georgia chaired was the Second Annual “Portrait of Wishes Gala” and continued on as chair for the subsequent decade. “Georgia entered The Indiana Children’s Wish Fund in its infancy,” shares Terry. “I am who I am today because of her. She is like a mother to me. I can’t say enough about her.” The annual Indiana Children’s Wish Fund “Portrait of Wishes Gala,” one of the largest fundraisers for the organization, will take place Saturday, October 8, 2016, at The Pavilion at Pan Am Plaza in downtown Indianapolis. Special festivities will take place to honor the 25th anniversary of the gala and more than 3,300 wishes granted for Indiana children. For more information, visit indywish.org. Marianne Glick CONTINUING A FAMILY LEGACY AND CREATING ONE OF HER OWN

Writer / Kara Kavensky Photographer / Brian Brosmer

Marianne Glick knows no stranger. Everyone she sees walk into the new offices of The Eugene and Marilyn Glick Foundation receives a warm smile and a hug. As Chairman of The Glick Family Foundation Board of Directors, Marianne is honoring her passion for helping others. Giving has been a common theme, established throughout Marianne’s

Marianne’s mother, Marilyn Koffman, was born in Detroit. Her birth mother died during childbirth, and her birth father never returned for the baby. Marilyn was adopted when she was 6 months old. Marilyn’s adoptive father passed away “There are so many people who don't when she was 10. Several years later, she have the opportunities that I have had,” and her mother moved to Indianapolis shares Marianne. “As a community and where Marilyn attended Shortridge High as a society, we have to be able to assist School. They lived in a home just down the others and provide opportunities to help street from a young man named Eugene develop their full potential in a variety (Gene) Glick. Gene was a year older than of ways.” Marilyn. Their mothers were friends, and life by her mother and father. they attended the same Temple. After graduation from Shortridge, Gene attended Indiana University where during the summer of his senior year in 1942, he was drafted into the Army. His story is shared in Tom Brokaw’s “The Greatest Generation” and in Mickey Mauer’s “19 Stars of Indiana: Exceptional Hoosier Men.”

Not long after the war ended, Marilyn needed one more person for a bridge party, and her mother suggested she “invite that nice Gene Glick over.” They hit it off and were married two years later. “Dad worked issuing GI loans at a bank, and Mom worked at Meridian Life Insurance Co.,” shares Marianne of her parents’ early start. “Before they married, they had

managed to save close to $10,000 and looked for land for building their first home. This began their business.” Gene and Marilyn started a home building and real estate company together during their first year of marriage. Marilyn and Gene were both good salespeople. They worked together on all aspects of the decisionmaking. Gene was in charge of construction, and Marilyn would select and pick up the supplies. One time, she had a flat tire along Fall Creek Parkway and had to call Gene to help her. She routinely hauled a flat bed trailer behind her car and had a load of cinder block, wood and materials upon it the day of the tire incident. The work crew was waiting on those supplies but first had to fix her flat. As their family grew, Marilyn’s role transitioned to being at home, although she was still very much involved in the business. Marilyn would later recall in the memoir she published at the age of 85, “Once Upon a Lifetime,” that these early years were among the happiest of her life.

Giving back to the community was a constant for the Glick girls as they grew up. Marianne is the oldest and has three younger sisters. Their parents believed wholeheartedly in philanthropy. Most of their initial philanthropic involvement was centered around Jewish causes, and then in the 1970s and 1980s, they broadened their scope. “Gene Glick, along with his wife, Marilyn, are among the most generous philanthropists in recent Indianapolis history, and that continues today in their honor,” says Mickey Maurer, Chairman of the Board of the IBJ Corporation and of The National Bank of Indianapolis. Marianne’s first deep dive into philanthropy began with the Women's Business Initiative in the mid-80s. She was just started her own corporate training business and became very impressed with the level of support

provided to women-owned businesses thru the WBI.

Project Committee (GIPC), then later the Children’s Bureau.

By the following year, Marianne chaired their annual conference and entered into the organization’s leadership. “It was inspirational to make a difference in women's lives,” she shares of the experience with the WBI. Thanks to her presidency of the WBI, Tom Binford approached her to lead the first women’s division of a United Way campaign. This was a first in Indiana and one of only a few in the country at that time. The following year, Marianne joined the United Way of Central Indiana’s (UWCI) Board. She was one of three women on this more than 90-member board. Marianne saw a vast opportunity in this discrepancy.

After her father became ill, Marianne began reassessing the Pro100 program. By the program’s 30th anniversary, numbers were down to around 80 students in Indianapolis. The program had evolved away from golf courses, maintaining primarily an outdoor focus

“We clearly needed more women on the UWCI board and other nonprofit boards in the city. When we asked, the men said they did not know of women qualified for board positions,” states Marianne. She worked with Ellen Annala, who had just started on United Way’s staff, to create the Women’s Leadership Program to provide training for women to serve on volunteer boards. This program is still in existence 26 years later. “Within five years, one-third of UWCI’s board was women.” Marianne is still actively involved with United Way. In 2011, she led the first annual campaign to raise over $40 million. “If there is a cause that I am passionate about, I meet with the CEO to see if I assist in some way,” says Marianne, who is clearly not shy about her passionate commitment to community service. In 1982, Gene began a youth employment program called Pro100. The idea behind Pro100 was to match 100 Indianapolis-area students with local golf pros. The students completed beautification projects on the golf courses and gained exposure to landscape architecture and design, construction and groundskeeping. Early origins of this program were run under the Greater Indianapolis

on college campus projects such as Marian University where professional development classes were offered in the afternoon to the students. In August 2014, Pro100 became TeenWorks. In 2016, TeenWorks provided jobs and professional development training as well as assistance with college choices and applications – 325 in Indianapolis.

The Muncie chapter of TeenWorks saw enrollment increase from 20 students to 70. With a proactive stance, TeenWorks secured additional funding and is flourishing as an organization. The rebranding was just what was needed, and this all happened, thanks to Marianne’s vision coupled with an outstanding staff and board of directors.

"The Glick family's positive impact upon our city cannot be overstated," says Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett. "From the Cultural Trail to their Housing Foundation to TeenWorks and beyond, their generosity continues to enhance lives, making our city stronger. While Marianne honors the legacy of her parents, she is a leader and inspiration in her own right."

In addition to all of her philanthropic endeavors, Marianne is an artist. She donates quite a bit of her art to be used in silent auctions to raise money for various organizations. “My parents were collectors,” says Marianne who has always shared an appreciation of art. Her mother’s collection of glass is on display at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. Marianne’s creative style, aesthetic and techniques have evolved over the last 10 years since she began painting. “It is an out-of-body experience to see my art properly displayed and well-lit with appropriate wall spacing,” says Marianne who is a guest speaker for the Indiana Conference for Women at the end of October.

In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.

“Marianne is a lovable free spirit with multidirectional deep talents. She can motivate you, amuse you and inspire you – a great lady to invite to dinner,” says family friend Mickey Mauer. Marianne was a challenge for her parents when she was younger. She jokes that she mellowed out and came into her own when she reached the age of 50. Now Marianne does things every day that she hopes her parents would be proud of. “My Mom, if she could see what I am doing now, would say, ‘Gee, she didn’t turn out so bad after all. Who knew?’” says Marianne with a shrug and a smile. The Glick Foundation builds community and creates opportunities. For more information, visit: genebglick.com GlickART.com teenworks.org

INTO THE WOODS

DEBUTS AT BEEF & BOARDS Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre will present its premiere production of Stephen Sondheim’s enchanting musical, Into the Woods starting Oct. 6. The Brothers Grimm hit the stage in this epic fairy tale about wishes, family and the choices we make. The story follows a Baker (Don Farrell) and his wife (Meaghan Sands), who wish to have a child; Cinderella (Amanda Downey), who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack (Danny Kingston), who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break it. They venture into the woods where they meet Cinderella and Jack, who are each on their own quests. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim take favorite storybook characters and bring them together for a timeless, yet relevant, piece. The Tony Award-winning book and score are both

enchanting and touching. Originally opening on Broadway in 1987, Into the Woods was brought to the big screen by Disney in 2014, earning three Oscar nominations and starring Meryl Streep as the Witch, James Corden as the Baker, Johnny Depp as the Wolf, Emily Blunt as the Baker’s Wife, and Anna Kendrick as Cinderella. Into the Woods is on stage for 51 performances through Nov. 20 in the intimate space of Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre. Tickets range from $41 to $66 and include Chef Odell Ward’s dinner buffet and select beverages. Parking is always free. For reservations, call the box office at 317.872.9664 anytime between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays. Discounts are available to groups of 20 or more; contact the Group Sales Department for more details. For more information, including complete show schedule, visit beefandboards.com.

WHEN IT MATTERS: GEIST JEWELERS

Writer / Kara Kavensky Photographer / Amy Unger

Brother sister team Mark Hackett and designer Cheri Hackett-Chappell celebrate 11 years at Geist Jewelers.

Geist Jewelers has been family-owned and operated since 2005. Owner Mark Hackett and designer Cheri Hackett-Chappell, continue to provide exceptional service to their clients. With decades of experience in the jewelry business, Mark has created a unique experience for his customers, offering an impressive array of services. “We can virtually do anything here,” shares Mark. And by “virtually” he is accurately stating the truth. Using the latest technology, clients are able to design their own pieces. From engagement rings to repurposing family heirlooms, there are endless design possibilities from which to explore. “We have many clients who have jewelry that they wish to keep, yet want to freshen up with a new twist,” shares Cheri, who is Mark’s sister. “It’s fun to play with the design options, whether that is following with something traditional or unique. Our clients get to play and explore.” Wedding rings and engagement sets are easily customized through their online CAD system. With prototypes on hand and the computer on the counter, clients can vary the shape, size, and customize in any way they desire. A model of the final design is created, then further adjustment can be made, resulting in the perfect ring for that lucky person. The process takes 4-6 weeks. There is also the ability to customize bracelets, pendants and earrings, as the choices are infinite. “You don’t have to select a piece from the case, but those may inspire," says Cheri. “Some clients have their own stones, so we can customize pieces to fit around what they have. Some wish to repurpose pieces into something new while honoring the integrity of the piece.” Geist Jewelers opened as a result of a wanting to service the area where they live with quality customer care and specialized services. From hand-crafted fine jewelry, estate pieces, repair, appraisals, watches, and more, the team at Geist Jewelers is able to help.

“We have a variety of price points, are local, and available, and after 11 years, we are quite comfortable in our location,” shares Mark. A new line for Geist Jewelers is QALO rubberized rings. This line was created for hardworking hands, which is what Indy Car driver Graham Rahal wears one when he is driving around. Literally. Inside their cases, customers will find the latest contemporary metals, such as cobalt, titanium, and tungsten. Traditional gold, white gold and platinum are available, too. “We offer a variety of price points, fashion pieces, designer pieces,” says Cheri. “Our collection of Estate Jewelry is popular as well.” "Custom jewelry doesn't have to be expensive," says Mark. "It will be a little bit more but it makes sense to explore it for that special gift for someone you love. Regardless of what our customers are looking for, we pride ourselves in having a great selection of jewelry for when it matters.”

A LEGACY OF HEARTFELT GIVING

ED MARTIN AUTOMOTIVE GROUP DONATES $500,000 TO LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP SCHOOLS

Mark and Nancy Martin-Pressley with Mark and Kathy Martin Harrison.

Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies

The Ed Martin Automotive Group has a lengthy history of generosity to the Lawrence Township School Corporation. The latest investment is a $500,000 gift to the district, giving them the naming rights to both new high school stadiums currently under construction and due to open during the 2017-2018 school year. But this investment, like all the other donations they have given to the school, are a direct reflection of their gratitude for what the school system has given them and a heartfelt desire to support this community. When Ed Martin was alive, he shared his philosophy with his daughters, Kathy Martin Harrison and Nancy Martin-Pressley, as

they were growing up. According to Kathy, her father’s message was a very simple one. “He said, ‘No matter what you do, just be the best you can at what you choose to do.’ And we have carried that message forward.” So when Ed Martin passed away 11 years ago, the company was passed down to his daughters along with son-in-law, Mark Harrison, now the President of Ed Martin Automotive. They made a commitment to carry on his legacy. In an effort to honor their father, the family started a scholarship program for a senior pursuing an automotive career in technology or business. And to date, the program has given over $30,000 in scholarships through the Lawrence Township School Foundation, of which Kathy is a former board member.

42 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2016 / atGeist.com

In November 2015, the Automotive Services Program at McKenzie was renamed “The Ed Martin Automotive Group Automotive Careers Training Center at the McKenzie Center for Innovation and Technology.” The donation of $375,000 was given to support the program along with donations to the Lawrence Township School Foundation, the Bridge Fund and numerous athletic sponsorships. Financial support now exceeds $1 million. To the family, these checks were more than a corporate gift; they represented the example that their father gave them and what the school corporation has meant to them. All the Martin children and grandchildren are Lawrence Township graduates. “My best days were in Lawrence Township schools, and I cannot even imagine having to go anywhere else. Every member of my family has attended Lawrence Township schools! The experiences that I had there and the education that I got was wonderful, and I just always felt like I have to give back.”

Kathy went on to say, “We have continued in honor of my father’s legacy. I know he would have been so proud of what we have done.” The donation was presented to the Lawrence community midfield prior to the Lawrence Central vs. Lawrence North football game at “Lawrence Night at Lucas Oil Stadium.” It was an especially meaningful evening, knowing that so many of the people from the township would be gathered in one location. The Director of Athletics Dr. Grant Nesbit shared, “We will be proud to have the Ed Martin name on our new stadiums. The Martin family have been longtime supporters of Lawrence Township, and their generosity helps us get to that next level with all of our student programs.” Also on hand to present the check was Superintendent Dr. Shawn Smith who had this to say about the donation, “We are grateful to the Martin family for their ongoing commitment to our school corporation. Their generous financial

support demonstrates great pride in our district, and we are proud to work alongside their family to ensue top notch facilities for our many program offerings.” Kathy shared, “This was a truly special and magical moment! I really wish my father was here to see it all. Knowing that everyone in that building was aware that what we are doing is making a difference just fills my heart up. The timing was awesome!” This was more than just a donation; it is a visual reminder to be the best and do the best job possible. It’s a legacy of the heart, which will surely be felt for a long time to come, and a legacy Ed Martin would have been proud to leave behind. INVEST IN YOUR NEST: A MASTER BATH MAKEOVER

Before

Writer / Pat Carlini

When Brad Akerman and Jeff Reider decided it was time to update the Master Bath, they knew they were taking on a big project. “This was not a coat of paint we were talking about,” laughs Brad. “We wanted a whole new look.” Brad, a self-employed interior designer at Akerman Designs, and Jeff, Director of Global Business Solutions at Eli Lilly, decided it was time to invest in their nest and redo the master bath from the ground up. “I wanted to get rid of the stained glass window by the bathtub, the red walls and all that brass! It all had to go!” Eric Jensen of Jensen Design got started on the project by clearing the original tile that was on the floor and wrapped around the bathtub. “The demolition was probably the worst part,” says Brad. “It’s loud and messy, but once you get past that part, it goes much more smoothly!” The tub, which was also removed, sat fairly low to the floor and

was replaced by a white, free standing resin tub from the Bancroft Collections by Kohler. New cabinets were topped off with Artisan sinks and Grohe chrome faucets. A neutral, more modern tile was chosen for the flooring, and the glass partition for the toilet room was replaced with a half wall and a pocket door for added privacy without taking up floor space. The heavy red walls were traded for neutral colors to create a more “spa-like” oasis. Final touches such as white, fluffy towels and a clear acrylic chair add to the clean, streamlined, modern feel that Brad and Jeff were looking for. The shower stayed in its original spot, but they were able to cut into the wall to create a built-in niche to store shampoo and other necessities. Brad and Jeff agree their favorite part of the new master bath is the glass front shower with matching Grohe chrome rainshower showerheads and body sprays flanking the sides of the shower. “You enter the new shower through French doors instead of one large heavy door,” says Jeff. “Between that and stepping out onto a now heated bathroom floor, I can’t think of a better way to start any day!” For more information or if you have a project for “Invest in Your Nest,” you can reach Pat at pat.carlini@comcast.net or on Twitter @thepatcarlini.

E G N A H C G N FUELI LISA KROSH

R O D A S S A B M US KOMEN A

“ WORK GOT ME OUT OF BED, KEPT ME A PART OF A TEAM AND KEPT ME FOCUSED.”

Writer / Jane VanOsdol Photography / Brian Brosmer

The treatment room buzzed with energy as nurses took vitals, explained procedures and prepped for the first chemo treatment. In the midst of her stress and fear, patient Lisa Kroshus, vice president of corporate sponsorships at Indy Fuel, became aware of a persistent clicking sound. She turned, shocked and angry to see her husband taking pictures. “WHAT are you doing?” she asked. “I can’t believe you’re taking pictures of me right now. I don’t want to remember this.” Sixteen months and 18 rounds of chemo later, Kroshus is glad her husband trusted his impulse to digitally document her fight against breast cancer. “It’s amazing to watch yourself go through that transformation because you’re sort of living outside your body the whole time it’s going on,” she said. “I can’t believe I went through all that. There were a lot of moments of not recognizing myself.”

MY JOB SAVED ME The very day after chemo and almost every day since then, Kroshus has been in her office – but not because it was required. On the contrary, Indy Fuel has been incredibly supportive, telling her to take off all the time she needed. Kroshus, however, was determined to not sit at home, focused on cancer. “Work got me out of bed, kept me a part of a team and kept me focused,” she said. Her co-workers showered her with support, asking about treatment and pampering her with useful gifts. As the chemo sessions racked up, so did the side effects. On the rare day she could not physically make it to the office, Kroshus worked from her couch. “My job was the best medicine I had,” she said.

REMISSION With a scary stage 2 triple-negative cancer diagnosis now in remission, Kroshus is a big believer in treatment being “doable.” She is fascinated by recent strides made in breast cancer research and the subsequent change in treatment. The focus is shifting from the stages of breast cancer to the personalities of breast cancer, which allows for a much more targeted treatment.

A DIFFERENT WOMAN During treatment, a team of five doctors closely monitored Kroshus’ condition which was reassuring. Something she didn’t expect, however, in the midst of the relief was the uncertainty she felt after her final chemo session. “The team congratulates you, and then you’re done and walking out the door. I was thinking ‘Where do I go? What do I do? What happens if something happens to me?’” she said. That uncertainty was what at first selfishly (her words) propelled her into becoming a 2016 Susan J. Komen for the Cure® Ambassador. During the introductory meeting, a vulnerable Kroshus found her wings and the answers to her questions within the supportive group of Ambassadors, all of whom had overcome immense challenges. “It was very, very powerful to be around such strong women, and I realized all the sudden that I was one of them, which was really incredible. I felt stronger immediately,” she said. Kroshus’ focus shifted as she realized that she could draw upon the strength of all the breast cancer survivors who had walked this journey before her. She now wants to unselfishly help those

52 / GEIST MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2016 / atGeist.com

undergoing treatment by lending them her strength and knowledge.

THE WORK OF AN AMBASSADOR As an Ambassador, Kroshus’ duties includes attending events to raise awareness or promote research, speaking, handing out information, answering questions, attending fundraisers and doing interviews. “[We are] putting a face to the disease, rather than it just being a generic disease,” she said. Interestingly, her involvement with Komen actually began years ago in Dallas before she was even diagnosed. Each year, she participated in Komen Race for the Cure®. She now marvels at how life has come full circle. “I was actually doing that for myself,” she said. “You never know when you may be saving your own life.” Overall, Kroshus takes great satisfaction in encouraging women who are just starting treatment by helping them realize that although it’s difficult, they are stronger than they realize, and they can do this. “Not to minimize [cancer], but I try to sort of minimize it because I don’t want to give cancer the spotlight. It doesn’t deserve it,” she said.

THE CREATIVE GENIUS BEHIND JUMBLE

Jeff Knurek in his Fishers home office.

Writer / Kara Kavensky Photographer / Amy Unger

Jeff Knurek and David L. Hoyt share a unique partnership. Over the past eight years, Jeff took over illustrating the Jumble puzzle and was joined by David in 2011, becoming the most syndicated puzzle team on the planet. With a distribution through more than 600 newspapers via the Tribune syndicate, they reach more than 70 million people each day. The popularity of the Jumble puzzle has led to several books and games celebrating their syndicated puzzles. Jeff and David headlined an event honoring the history of the Jumble to a sold-out crowd at Tribune Tower last year in Chicago. When Jeff began cartooning for the Jumble, he became the most syndicated puzzle creator on the planet. “Anyone is fair game of being featured in the cartoon,” shares Jeff who finds inspiration everywhere. “My daughter and son are swimmers (at HSE), and I have featured their coach, the team, people at my gym…” One such featured caricature was of yoga and spin instructor Greta Wilson whose inspired image graced the cover of one of Jeff and David’s books. “Jeff and Kathy attended my cycle class, and we subsequently became great friends,” shares Greta. “It was a fun surprise that my likeness inspired a Jumble cartoon. My husband and I remain close friends with Jeff and Kathy. They are just great people.” Originally, Jeff ’s agent introduced the duo. The agent suggested that Jeff connect with David regarding a game idea of Jeff ’s. A poker fan,

Jeff had designed a new take on the game, Hi/Lo. David interrupted and said, “I know what you are going to show me. Come here.” David led Jeff to his computer where he showed him something he was working on which was basically the exact same idea Jeff had. “Clearly we are like-minded in our thought processes,” says Jeff. David asked Jeff if he could draw cartoons. David, who is known as “The Man Who Puzzles America,” tested him on the spot, having Jeff sketch something on a napkin. David loved the impromptu illustration, even though to Jeff, it was a poor rendering. “That drawing was awful,” confesses Jeff, but David thought it was great. “I was offered $10 per sketch. I created over 3,000 sketches for Dave,” shares Jeff. Those 3,000 sketches accompanied David’s Jumble puzzles in a bar top gaming system. Not long after this joint venture, they began their syndication with Tribune with Boggle BrainBusters. While the Jumble puzzle became their bread and butter, David and Jeff keep busy creating and designing additional games, both together and independently. Both are award-winning game designers. Each has created board games, electronic games and apps. The two also manage licensing for Comedy Magician Mac King who has a popular show in Vegas. Jeff and David help market and license for Mac’s Magic in a Minute magic kits and other merchandise. A lesser-known fact about Jeff is that while he worked at his first job as a toy inventor in Chicago years ago, he created the game, Spikeball. Spikeball, which has become a sport, was featured on Shark Tank last year. “It was wild watching my invention on Shark Tank,” says

atGeist.com / OCTOBER 2016 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 55

Jeff. “The guys (who now own the trademark) were asked if they had invented it, and to their credit, they told the truth and said, ‘No, they bought the trademark when it expired.’ And now I can’t go to a beach or park without seeing my invention.” Jeff confesses that once he got over his frustration at this experience, he explained that Spikeball originally went to market for three years and was subsequently removed from the shelves due to poor response. Who could have foreseen what the future held? Jeff adds, “I am really proud of what those guys have done with it.” “As we did a college visit with my daughter recently to IU, I noticed a flier posted in the natatorium for a Spikeball club,” says Jeff. “It’s everywhere.” Jeff lives in Fishers, and many parents may recognize Jeff ’s efforts with past Spring Fling game themes at Fall Creek Elementary. “We went all out with the games,” says Jeff, whose kids are now at HSE HS. The latest fundraising effort that Jeff is involved with capitalizes on the Jumble and places him, along with David, in their element with “Jumble Live,” a fundraiser benefitting Indy Reads Adult Literacy programming October 18 downtown at the Hyatt Regency. “This is an event for wordy people,” states Jeff with a smile. These are his, and David’s, tribe. For Jumble Live, teams of eight wear the same letters as other teams and must be the first team to complete the puzzles presented by the host. The event is capped at 160 participants with many more attending for the entertainment value. “We are splitting the event to be half ‘Giant Word Winder’ and half ‘Jumble Live,’” shares Jeff. “This allows everyone to have fun.” “We are so excited to be presenting Jumble Live this fall,” said Indy Reads outgoing Executive Director Travis DiNicola. “Jeff and David have been great supporters of Indy Reads for years, donating artwork and their books to our auctions, appearing at our Indy Reads Books bookstore and contributing to our book, ‘Indy Writes Books.’ Working with them in moving the Jumble off the page to the stage has been so much fun. It is going to be one of the most unusual fundraising events ever!” David, who is by far the most syndicated puzzle creator in the world right now, spent much of his summer in Chicago libraries, playing Giant Word Winder with kids in summer camps. On October 18, he gets to apply the fun to adults. For more information, visit the Jumble Live Facebook page or visit jumble.com.
