McCordsville has been relatively quiet for the past few decades, but that is all changing. With just over 5,000 residents and 1,700 rooftops, McCordsville is on a record-setting pace for new construction permits. Trail projects, a new Town Hall Park, and recent business additions have the Town Manager Tonya Galbraith excited. And she should be. Find out how Geist’s sleepy little community is coming to life.
It’s been the Fox, the Fox Grille, and Michael’s South Shore. This anchor tenant in the Geist Shopping Center near Fox and Oaklandon Road is now changing hands again, this time to The Gathering Bistro & Pub with two sisters at the helm. Find out where Jill and Molly McGlinchey are from, what they plan to do different, and how the menu will change in the next few months.

Sewer Line Under Indian Lake Could Cause Environmental Disaster Supt. Solenberg
| Neal G. Moore It is not hyperbole to suggest that a potential environmental disaster is lurking beneath Indian Lake in Lawrence Township. Concern about the structural integrity of a decades-old iron sewer pipe and the possibility that it could fail, has utility officials and the mayor’s office working on an action plan to avoid what would be a malodorous problem – and worse. The following are portions of recent interviews (Jun. 6, Aug. 17) with Lawrence Mayor Dean Jessup, and Utilities Superintendent John Solenberg, about what lies beneath Indian Lake – and what they plan to do about it.
Supt. Solenberg
The only folks that are really intimately aware of this issue… are the folks that live here at the lake, and have lived here since the mid 70s. They are all aware that there’s an issue underneath the lake. It’s a ticking time bomb. So, they’re very, very interested in seeing this corrected, and we think we’ve got a very good plan to do it.
Mayor Jessup
How we do it is, we stop the flow just upstream of Indian Lake. And the way we do that is to install a lift station. To bring it down to simple terms, a lift station is nothing different than basically a sump pump that someone would have in their basement. So, the water flows into it, it’s picked up and it’s moved. Once the water is picked up, from that point, it’s put into what’s called a force main (because the water is being forced, it’s not running by gravity.) So, it runs through a force main and, that in turn, will run downstream and connect in to our original connection point with the Indianapolis system.
Mayor Jessup
There should be no concern over ground water, over a sewage problem, capacity problems – at this time. However, if we don’t do this, there would be major concern in both areas because we have some stations that are called SSSOs (sanitary sewer overflows), and those would contaminate the environment should they overflow.
[There is] 4,200 feet of metal sewer pipe (ductile iron) that runs underneath Indian Lake over near the dam. It has a 50-year shelf life. It’s been in the ground for over forty years now. That would imply that it’s eighty percent used up. If that were to break and cause a leak, it would mean serious implications for not only all of Lawrence, as far as sewage goes, but would also mean serious implications for Castleton and the other parts of Indianapolis that drain into the same sewer system, which eventually goes down to the 402 Interceptor. We connect with Indianapolis right at the end of this 4,100 feet of sewer pipe, and then it goes on down into the Indianapolis system, down to the 402 Interceptor, which is near the Fort. If this sewer pipe failed, that would cause the 402 Interceptor to fail, which is why all of the sewer systems north of that would be in jeopardy. So, the challenge is either upgrade the 402 Interceptor – which is extremely expensive – or, route around it and abandon this 4,100 feet of sewer pipe.

Superintendent of Lawrence Utilities John Solenberg talks about a potential environmental hazard at Indian Lake. A 40 year-old sewer line underneath the lake is nearing the end of it’s lifespan, forcing the City of Lawrence to look at a potential $20 million project to remedy the problem. SUPT. SOLENBERG
It is a hidden issue, but it would become a very public issue if this pipe failed under Indian Lake. It would be a catastrophe on the scale that we’ve never seen in the city of Lawrence, and at that point in time, all bets are off on the cost to repair.

MAYOR JESSUP
We have it in [engineering] design now… and we hope to start work next spring. It would be about a year-and-ahalf project probably to complete the entire project.
SUPT. SOLENBERG
The engineers estimate is $20 million for the project. We will be seeking a bond issue for the work. We are in discussions with the EPA [because] we would like to use funds that are currently set aside for EPA projects as the funding source for the bond. We believe we will prevail, so there will not be a sewer rate increase related to the diversion project.

Carroll Rd Sidewalk Extension | Tom Britt
A vital pedestrian link between the Marina Village and neighborhoods south of 96th and Carroll Rd. is finally going to happen. For years residents in Admirals Bay, the Woods at Geist, and Cardinal Woods have wanted a safe passage way along Carroll Rd. near the Treasure Pointe subdivision. Thanks to a community partnership spearheaded by the Town of McCordsville, the
design of a new 900-foot sidewalk is now underway. After an unsuccessful bid for a federal grant in 2012, the project was put on ice due to lack of funding. Since then, residents and local businesses have come forward offering money and in-kind services to help the project along. With some assurances from the Geist locals, the Town of McCordsville agreed to proceed with the first part of the engineering study. “Once we have a survey done, we can get an idea as to how much excavation, aggregate, asphalt, and retaining wall materials we will need to shore up from donors or outside funders,” said Mark Witsman, engineer, Town of McCordsville. What’s planned is a widening of Carroll Rd. by approximately eight feet to the west, starting at the entrance to Treasure Pointe on the south, to the sidewalk across from Cardinal Woods Dr. on the north. A cross walk will be installed at the south end to connect the Woods at Geist neighborhood sidewalk which now is a dead end. Another cross walk will be installed on the north end for Cardinal Woods residents. Estimated timeline for completion is August 2014. Local businesses in the following areas that would like to participate in this community project are urged to contact Tom Britt (Tom@atGeist.com): Asphalt, concrete pavers, masonry, and excavating. While some corporate sponsors have given preliminary commitments, none will be firm until the engineering study is completed by the Town of McCordsville. For updates follow the Geist Community Newsletter on Facebook (/atGeist) or on Twitter @atGeist.

ndiana’s generally feeble embrace of physical activity is well documented. We’ve all heard it: Get outside! Move! So, instead of beating a dead horse about exercise, the Hoosier Mountain Biking Association (HMBA) is beating the drum for its all-ages mountain biking trek at the forthcoming Ford Hoosier Outdoor Experience. Produced by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Hoosier Outdoor Experience is an extravaganza of highly-participatory activities taking place September 21 and 22 at Ft. Harrison State Park in Lawrence. The free event features canoeing, riflery, horseback riding, archery, 12

and scores of other choices. “Forty to fifty organizations will be there to get people outdoors, and to introduce new kinds of outdoor recreation,” said Steve King, HMBA board member. “We are the biking organization and we want folks doing something they’ve never considered trying.” In recent years, HMBA carved three permanent mountain biking trails in the hills and dales of Ft. Harrison State Park including a one-mile Beginner’s Trail described as flat, tight, twisty and fun; the Lawrence Creek Trail, a fourmile excursion with topography similar to Brown County with more hills and challenges for intermediate riders; and the Schoen Creek Trail, not long, but grueling for expert riders who are looking for a serious challenge. “DNR wanted us to introduce kids to mountain biking and to show off the Ft. Harrison trails,” explained Mark Finney, Bicycle Garage Indianapolis (BGI), which is a major HMBA supporter.
At Outdoor Experience volunteers will fit kids and adults with helmets and appropriately sized bikes, and teach novices how to negotiate simple trail obstacles. Kids will ride on guided tours of the flat, one-mile Beginner’s Trail, winding through park woods with a few minor elevated grades and turns. The advice for first-timers is simple. “Keep your eyes up and pedal, other than that, you’re in good shape,” said a smiling Finney. The bikes for the event are donated along with equipment used to mark the trails. “BGI has a large fleet of mountain bikes in all sizes that we’ll add to those owned by HMBA. Do Indiana Off Road (the state’s largest promoter of mountain biking events) is generously donating trail obstacles and the snow fencing for safety barriers,” Finney noted. DNR’s overarching purpose for Outdoor Experience is to provide a free opportunity for people to

Making Dam Sure
How Safe Are Indiana’s Dams, Including Geist? | Neal G. Moore It is arguably the most important man-made structure in northeast Marion County. Standing 799 feet tall, the Geist Reservoir dam is impressive in scope, and yet people pass by it daily without giving the dam much thought. It’s there and the water stays where it’s supposed to. If, however, the structural integrity of Geist dam were ever seriously compromised, the result could be catastrophic. It pushes the limit of understatement to say that thousands of people, homes and businesses rely on a safe, structurally sound Geist dam. Earlier this year, a highly critical report was issued by a blue-ribbon engineering association about America’s decades-old infrastructure – including the condition of its
dams. The 2013 Report Card for America’s Infrastructure provided a sobering judgment of Indiana’s roads, bridges, dams, wastewater treatment facilities and the like. Using the familiar letter-grade system to rank the quality of each state’s infrastructure, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) slapped Indiana with a grade of D, based on physical conditions and needed fiscal investments for improvement. Hoosier dams earned the lowest of Indiana’s marks, managing only a D-. Citing Indiana data, ASCE reported that more than 50 percent of the 1,088 dams regulated by the state needed remediation, adding that, “today many dams in Indiana are deficient as a result of age, deterioration, and a lack of maintenance.” The report also noted that many of the state’s dams were built 30 or 40 years ago. september 2013

The report’s troubling data prompted Townepost (publisher of atGeist and atFishers magazines) to seek a status report on the Geist dam. This is what we learned.
basis to ensure there’s no seepage,” explained Malone. A piezometer is an instrument for measuring the pressure of a fluid.
Construction on the earthen and concrete Geist dam was completed in 1943 – 70 years ago. “We would describe the Geist Reservoir dam as being in very good condition,” said Ed Malone, director of production, Citizens Energy Group, when questioned about the dam’s structural integrity. “We have no concerns related to its age. We inspect to evaluate the conditions associated with the dam, and any predictive or preventive maintenance needed.”
While there is every reason to believe the Geist dam is structurally sound, and that it is subjected to rigorous safety inspections and regular maintenance, one potential threat looms – an earthquake. The New Madrid Fault Line centered in southeast Missouri is capable of causing a significant earthquake with shock waves reaching Indiana. The New Madrid zone had four of the largest North American earthquakes in recorded history, and seismologists have long warned it is overdue for a seismic event of some consequence. New Madrid researchers say a violent shifting of its tectonic plates could potentially result in significant damage in seven states, including Indiana. The Wabash Valley fault system is also capable of wreaking seismic damage.
Geist Reservoir and the dam are privately owned assets of Citizens Energy Group (CEG). The dam is subject to regulatory oversight by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and carries a federal designation as a high-hazard dam, meaning a failure could cause loss of life, homes, buildings, utilities, etc. High hazard dams in Indiana must be inspected every two years. CEG’s Malone noted that the Geist dam receives annual inspections by a third-party engineering firm. “Typically, there may be minor issues that are fixed immediately. The dam and spillway are monitored daily [by CEG], 365 days a year. Someone is there to physically inspect it, looking at both sides (of the structure),” he explained. According to the DNR, in July of last year, Indianapolis engineering firm Cardno ATC conducted the required third-party inspection of the Geist dam, giving it an overall “fair” rating – the second-highest of five designations. “No existing dam safety concerns were recognized for normal loading [pressure] conditions,” explained Phil Bloom, DNR spokesman, who added, “Infrequent hydraulic or seismic events would probably result in dam safety deficiency” for structures with “fair” ratings. Bloom emphasized that the highest rating (“satisfactory”) is difficult to achieve, and to reach it, “The dam would have to have a safe performance under all conditions, including earthquakes,” he said.
In 2008, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake centered in Illinois struck the Midwest, shaking buildings in Chicago and Indianapolis (source: US Geological Survey report.) DNR spokesman Bloom said, “Possible damage to Geist Dam from an earthquake would depend on conditions such as the magnitude of the earthquake, the geologic condition under the dam,” and other factors. Liquefaction (shaking causing a severe loss of soil strength) is a risk associated with earthen dams. CEG‘s Malone said any such seismic activity impacting the Geist dam would be determined quickly. “We do have tremors periodically Map showing New Madrid and Wabash Valley Earthquake Zones . Source | earthquake.usgs.gov
When contacted by Townepost to discuss the Geist dam, Malone said a considerable amount of dollars are spent to ensure the longevity of each of the utility’s dams. “You’ll find we spend a considerable amount of time and effort… in assuring the reliability of this dam (Geist),” he emphasized. In 2010, CEG made improvements to the dam’s upstream slope and crest (the water side). The work included pouring concrete over steel mats to mitigate erosion; raising the vertical wall on the face of the dam by two feet; replacing security fencing and installing security cameras; and driving metal sheets into the earthen dam to inhibit seepage. “Piezometers inside the dam are monitored on a monthly 18

issue. “You do the best you can with the tools you have. It’s for others to decide when additional funding is available,” said spokesman Bloom. When asked specifically about the safety and inspection record of the Geist dam, DNR did not raise any red flags, and CEG called the dam’s condition very good. “It has been maintained, and continues to serve its purpose. We take that responsibility very seriously and are always vigilant about safety, stability and long-term reliability,” said Malone.
– two or three in the last ten years, very moderate. Also, we have cameras and can see any such seismic action because of water movement.” According to the DNR, the 2012 Geist inspection report concluded, “there is virtually no probability of liquefaction for the soil conditions at [the dam] under any reasonably anticipated ground-shaking.”
It’s worth contemplating, however, what might happen to the dam in the event of a serious earthquake – a force of nature that, as history has shown, is a legitimate threat in the Midwest. A link to ASCE’s Report Card on America’s Infrastructure is available on our website, www.atGeist.com.
Perhaps most troubling is Indiana’s anemic commitment to dam safety: just $400,000 and only five full-time employees, which equates to 217.6 dams per engineer. In 2005, Indiana ranked 25th in full-time engineers devoted to dam safety. The DNR said it is taking steps to proactively address the

link and you might miss it – a tiny, rustic sign, which has caused many hungry, adventurous eaters to scratch their heads in bewilderment. The sign points them down the small-town roads of Perkinsville toward one of Indiana’s finest gourmet eateries, wedged between neighborhood homes, standing tall in an historical farmhouse. Bonge’s Tavern is a popular destination restaurant that has earned a solid reputation as a memorable “must go” location for hearty, regional fare and tailgating fun.
The name of this Tavern is legendary, and not just in Indiana. The license plates in the parking lot tell tales of cross-country travels. People from across America flock to rural Perkinsville, excited to experience this clash of pickup truck parties followed by a gourmet dinner. Famous dishes that draw the crowds include seasonally-adjusted specialties such as: Perkinsville Pork, Harger Duck, Pork Mignon, Applewood Smoked Prime Rib, and Scottish Salmon. French fries and burgers do not litter the menu posted on a traditional chalkboard above the bar; the selections are surprisingly sophisticated when compared to the rustic setting and casual ambiance that defines Bonge’s. Kirk Cochran, the “Jack of all trades” at Bonge’s, has been working at the establishment since the current chef and owner, Tony Huelster, bought it fourteen years ago. He explained, “I can guarantee that the last plate delivered to a table is the same quality as the first one that leaves the kitchen at 4:30. Our people are dedicated to doing it right.”

red Harding learned the asphalt business the old-fashioned way: Starting with a single dump truck, Harding began paving and seal-coating driveways by hand. The year was 1960.
Today, F. E. Harding has grown to become a TOP Nationally recognized paving company. A one-stop shopping solution for commercial and residential asphalt and concrete needs. Its tenure and reliability in the business has not gone unnoticed. This year, Pavement Magazine (a national industry publication) named the firm one of the Top 10 Asphalt Companies in the United States. It is a reputation built on exemplary customer service. “F.E. Harding Companies prides itself on workmanship, we simply want to do the best work possible,” said Mike Harding. “We believe that customers come first, and we stand behind our commitment to delivering services as promised.” F.E. Harding enjoys an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. In 1994, the firm added nationwide maintenance to its service offerings. Companies can protect parking lots against damage from ultraviolet rays and inclement weather cycles. Harding services include crack fill, seal-coating, infrared repair, pothole repair, and striping (both exterior and interior). Three years ago, a concrete division was added, with an emphasis on decorative concrete. That division not only performs commercial work but also some of the most spectacular residential decorative concrete in the Midwest. Harding’s highly skilled craftsman, with over 60 years of combined decorative concrete experience, make Harding one of the best in residential concrete. About 150 employees serve Harding customers across the Midwest. With the addition of their concrete division they can complete the concrete flat work at your home or facility with sidewalk, curbing, parking bollards, and anything decorative from patios to driveways. Harding has a master degreed landscape architect on staff that will help throughout the entire design process of your hardscape project. Patterns, colors, shapes and sizes are just a few of the items you need to consider when installing that backyard retreat. Harding takes the time to listen to your needs and wants and designs the space that is custom made just for you. Harding customer Colliers Turley Martin Tucker had this to say about F.E. Harding’s services. “The job is done right the first time… you don’t have to baby-sit their crews when they are on-site to make sure they are working and completing the work as promised.” september 2013

experience between them. Their partnership is solid – they are sisters, after all – including an unusual drive to succeed. Four years ago the young women lost their mother to breast cancer. Now, their passion is to build the business to better support financially the American Cancer Society and Susan G. Komen Foundation. You’ll also likely see them tending the bar. Mark McGlinchey, family head and the funding partner behind the restaurant, said business launch plans have brought the girls even closer together. He said the family is very excited to serve the Geist community through the restaurant including activities with local churches, Little League, and the like. “The Gathering will have a new energy,” Mark promised. “It will be more familyfriendly with a big emphasis on service by an attentive, hospitable wait staff.”
possibly expanding to the patio Jill and Molly said their goal is to create an energetic atmosphere for families and friends, where people will come regularly to see neighbors and to mingle. The restaurant name has an Irish connotation. Irish people don’t call it a ‘party’ but rather a ‘gathering’. With a name like McGlinchey, the Irish slant shouldn’t surprise anyone.

Indianapolis Marathon & Half Marathon More Than A Race

F
ew people would argue that one of the best reasons for living in or traveling to the Geist area is, in large part, Geist Reservoir and the beautiful, tree-lined, winding roads – especially at the peak of fall foliage. It was in this bucolic setting that the Indianapolis Marathon & Half-Marathon was conceived by Joel Sauer, a Lawrence resident and Eli Lilly executive and marathon runner, while he trained at Geist and Fort Benjamin Harrison. You could say it was the perspiration that gave Sauer the inspiration to create the marathon, now celebrating its 18th year next month.
While the Indianapolis Marathon is a favorite among local and state runners, it’s reputation has attracted participants from Cincinnati, Chicago, Louisville, even Alberta, Canada. Serious runners can use the event as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, and the event welcomes 32
geist c o m m u n i t y

participants of all ages and skill levels. Whether you are a seasoned runner or walker, a beginner or a child, you can choose between the 5K Run/Walk, the Marathon Relay, or the Kids Marathon. Because of Joel’s passion for running, his dedication to inspire runners at all levels, and commitment to making a difference in the community, this is no ordinary event. Early on, it was important to Sauer to honor his partnership with the state park, and he secured donations to make improvements to the race course that would also benefit the park. A substantial amount of money is raised and then donated at the conclusion of each year’s marathon. Last year, more than $75,000 was raised for local charities, and organizers hope to do more this year. Local charities are encouraged to contact them if a charity would like to participate in the event.
As an avid runner and bike commuter to work, Joel has attended Lawrence civic meetings the past 15 years urging the construction of a pathway along Fall Creek to allow bikers, runners, and walkers a safe path to cross Shadeland. His persistence has paid off. A new pathway under construction on Fall Creek is slated for completion in September and fittingly the Indianapolis Marathon and Half Marathon will be the first event to benefit from it. This is only the beginning of the city’s plans to connect our greenways and parks. The Indianapolis Marathon is, indeed, more than a race. For registration information visit www.indianapolismarathon.com. Lynda is a Freelance Writer, Entrepreneur, and Executive Regional Vice President with Arbonne International for over ten years. A lifelong Indianapolis resident, she is married with two children. What she loves most about her experience is making a difference to others and her community.

Two Inspiring Athletes Named to the USA Gymnastics Senior National Team
Alex and Tristan are close friends and have endured their share of setbacks in their sports career.
| Janet C. Striebel Two local athletes from Geist Sports Academy have recently been named to the USA Gymnastics Senior National Team. Both are top contenders for a spot on the World Championships team to be announced next month. Alex Renkert and Tristan Vannatta have faced their share of pain, injuries and health issues, only to prove that determination can be a powerful pay-off in life. “Many people don’t realize that Trampoline and Tumbling is a sport,” said Amber Vannatta, head coach of the Power Tumbling Team. “The Trampoline event has been in the Olympics since 2000, and the Double Mini-trampoline is in the World Games.” Trampoline and Tumbling includes four events including trampoline, power tumbling, synchronized trampoline and double mini-trampoline. Male and female gymnasts can focus on just one area or compete in all four events. Triple Threats for Alex Renkert & Tristan Vannatta Both Alex and Tristan have conquered three bouts of bad luck or medical setbacks to their training and competing. Never did these obstacles stop them. Perhaps this commonality explains why they remain such good friends. Alex, a twenty year old IUPUI student, has twice been named to the World Championships. He has also been invited to the World Games competition in Colombia later this month. Three years ago, he broke his back, and recalled competing in regionals using a plastic back brace. In 2011, he suffered from a horrible ACL injury leaving him with permanent nerve damage. “Injury is what got me started in this sport,” said Alex, who originally began in artistic gymnastics. At age nine, Alex was diagnosed with a disease in is elbow – osteochondritis dissecans. “The doctors said my future in gymnastics was over. After two and half years, I was cured completely," he explained. "I decided to go into trampoline and tumbling (instead of continuing with artistic gymnastics) because I like the flipping aspect better than the 36
geist c o m m u n i t y

strength aspect. This sport is a lot quicker and more of an adrenaline sport. It’s more risky and extreme.” Tristan, a seventeen year old who attends Pendleton Heights High School, recalled as a seventh grader having endured a major operation involving cranial reconstruction, necessary because of a tumor. The doctors had to remove two of her ribs, and then install them in her skull using titanium screws to replace bone removed because of the tumor. Basically, 75% of her skull was compromised because of the surgery. “I was told I might never bounce again, but I was back in nine months and competing,” she said. Indeed, Tristan tied for third in a world competition in Russia. After being bumped to fourth place in a tie breaker, Tristan felt a major letdown. “I remember feeling devastated that I didn’t receive a medal. But after coming home I realized that I was fourth in the world!” she explained. Tristan began to focus on what she had accomplished, instead of what she hadn’t. In 2010, Tristan had to have an immediate surgery to repair a triple umbilical hernia. Then, right before her first elite meet of the season she contracted mononucleosis, and was not allowed to train, to prevent her spleen from rupturing. She returned the next season and moved up a level. “Alex and Tristan are an inspiration to other athletes who see how hard work and determination can overcome obstacles like

the ones they have experienced," said Coach Amber, who also is Tristan’s mother. “You can look at injuries as either the end of a career, or another opportunity to learn and test yourself, to identify your emotional and physical strength,” she added. Geist Sports Academy took 12 athletes to Nationals. All but one had a top 10 finish. Twenty-two kids take trampoline and tumbling at the facility, and Amber offered words of
encouragement for others to join them. “We’re always looking for more to share our sport. Whereas artistic gymnastics peak at around twenty years old, a lot of trampoline athletes are just beginning at this age.” For more information visit www.geistsportsacademy.com and www.usagym.org. Next Stop McCordsville Moving Toward Strategic Growth with Conductress Tonya Galbraith | Janet C. Striebel
T
he sun is shining brightly in McCordsville as positive plans are set for the future of this growing community. The pace is “full throttle ahead” for the town of more than 5,000 residents as new businesses are being established, and new projects are designed to pamper this quaint Hancock County community, just south of Geist Reservoir, and bordering Lawrence in Marion County and Fishers in Hamilton County. “Like many areas in central Indiana, we are beginning to feel the uptick in the economy,” said Tonya Galbraith, McCordsville town manager. “Our residential building permits are at a level we haven’t seen since 2007. We have several new sections of subdivisions opening and we have completed two growth-related studies to help us better plan for the future. Also, we are developing our first-ever Town Hall Park.”

The new park will be located west of Town Hall and include a mulch walking path (that Eagle Scouts have already implemented), an octagon-shaped shelter with picnic tables, benches, bike racks and a grill. All of these features represent Phase I, set for installation this fall. The park is being developed in conjunction with a Cost-Share Grant from the Upper White River Watershed Alliance. Some additional highlights include pervious pavers for natural storm water removal; native trees and shrubs planted throughout the park; vegetative stream bank cover in the form of wildflowers to help stabilize the stream bank on the eastside of Town Hall; and interpretative signage near the flowers, trees, shrubs and pavers to help inform the public. “We’ve also started instituting some community events,” said Tonya, who serves as a conduit between the residents and town council. We had our first-ever Easter Egg Hunt this year, and we gave away approximately 300 seedlings to residents to help us commemorate our 25th anniversary of being a town.” Another exciting feature for residents is the upcoming “Trails Project” which will connect the subdivisions on the eastside of CR 600W (also known as Olio Rd. in Hamilton County) providing pedestrians with bike/walking connectivity from south of the Emerald Springs subdivision in McCordsville up CR 600W where it will connect with the Olio Rd. trail. Business-Friendly Culture Catching On The business-friendly climate of McCordsville explains why many companies are sprouting in the area. In 2008, the McCordsville Redevelopment Commission embarked upon a branding and marketing campaign. The “Next Stop McCordsville” tag was created for the campaign, with a kick-off held at the Indiana State Museum. “The tagline refers to the fact that McCordsville was once a stop on the interurban line, and we hope to someday to be stop on another transit line. It also means that as development surrounds us, the logical ‘next stop’ for continued and strategic growth would be McCordsville,” Tonya explained. No longer will McCordsville stand like an island surrounded by exterior developments. Entrepreneurs will undoubtedly 42

recognize the value of this prime territory and capitalize on it. Here is what business professionals are saying about their experience: “We have always valued our relationship with the Town of McCordsville and found their long-term vision and real-time perspective in alignment with the interests of the hospital and its services. In 2008, Hancock Regional Hospital made a commitment to grow with the McCordsville community by building a 7,500 square foot building to house an outstanding group of internal medicine physicians – Northeast Medical Group – and to add an imaging center, laboratory, rehabilitation and immediate/urgent care services to the community. We continue to examine the use of our location in McCordsville and want it to align well with the needs of the local community.” - Rob Matt, Vice President, Business Development, Hancock Regional Hospital Beyond the 10 acres allotted for Northeast Medical Group, Hancock Regional also purchased 20 additional acres behind the building. This extra land may be used for a wellness center and/or additional office space for specialist doctors to complement the primary care physicians. “Ameri-Stor Self Storage and Office Suites came to McCordsville because of its location and the need to provide a Class A facility to meet the needs of this growing community and the surrounding area, both from a self-storage point of view and what we felt at the time was a need for new office suites in the McCordsville community. The Town of McCordsville staff is very professional and has been a pleasure to work with. Over the last five years, the owners and staff of Ameri-Stor Self Storage have worked very hard to maintain a Class A office and storage facility, which in-turn helps future business owners and developers know that Ameri-Stor Self Storage and the Town of McCordsville are committed to a bright future for the area.” - Rick Schmadeke Managing Partner, Aspen Self Storage, LLC

“After having two locations in Indianapolis, one north and one east, I began looking for a more businessfriendly environment, one that also provided the technical infrastructure my business required. With reliable and reasonably priced utilities, and with an emphasis on electric power and telecommunications, I found the right combination in McCordsville. The biggest factor influencing my decision was the availability of fiber optics. Very few cities and towns nationwide can match McCordsville’s all-fiber telecommunications services available to every home and business. “Once the decision was made to move, I began a search for the perfect building. I renovated the circa-1870s house located at 6425 W. Broadway, whose first known owner was Jacob McCord. One fact omitted from the history is that during the time the house was owned by the local postmaster, my mother, as a small child, played in the house with his children. With a renovation complete, the property served as office space for my business until it was converted back into a single-family dwelling. I think the people of McCordsville are best described as ‘cherishing the past while embracing the future.’” - Robert L. Olson Owner of Input-Output Unlimited, Inc.
obviously nice to live close to work, that wouldn’t happen if they didn’t enjoy the area.” - Brent Archer Vice President of Proportion-Air, Inc. “Now that the economy is coming back, we’re looking for that next step, which is the commercial piece, explained Tonya. “It’s got to be the right fit with our architectural standards and all. This piece we’re missing, such as grocery stores and restaurants and is where we will turn our focus.” Intentional Growth is Community Driven McCordsville continues to prosper with the help of the entire community. With the guidance of two steering committees it is no accident that the tactics for growth spell success. For instance, 4th year “Urban Planning” students from Ball State University spent six months completing a project titled, “Imagine McCordsville” whereby they surveyed residents to identify their needs and vision in the town center including everything from the type of pedestrian trails to the style of restaurants they would want to see in their town. These students set up a booth at the Lord’s Acre Fest and helped bring the focus of the future to life.
“McCordsville has the perfect location for retailers. Eight years ago, we were attracted to the corner of 600W (Olio Rd.) and Broadway because of the local traffic patterns and strong growth in the area. Our retail building and the adjoining CVS enjoy exposure to more than 30,000 commuters every day – on their way to work or just running errands. The variety of businesses in our building are thriving, and are reporting increasing sales as rooftops are added in the neighboring subdivisions. McCordsville has a great outlook towards future development, and keeping a close eye on the needs of its residents. They understand the importance of maintaining the right balance between development, community spaces and activities to make it an attractive place to call home. This discipline and focus assures a bright future in McCordsville!” - Jeff Clark Owner, McCordsville Commons, LLC “Proportion-Air was founded in McCordsville in 1985 and has resided here ever since. We’ve enjoyed growing in this area and have attracted employees from all over; some drive from as far as Muncie, New Castle, and Westfield. We actually have three employees who drive from Ohio, and the owner, Dan Cook, works out of our R&D facility in Florida with three other employees. One thing I’ve noticed is that many employees try to relocate their families to this area, myself included. While it’s september 2013

It would appear that McCordsville’s future is as bright as the morning sun the day of my visit.
“The thing that people like about McCordsville is that small-town feel, the friendly neighborhoods,” said Tom For more information, visit www.mccordsville.org. Strayer, current vice president, and former president of the McCordsville Town Council. He continued, “I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of several steering committees Janet Striebel is a Fishers resident and freelance writer. She and over the last ten years trying to make sure that whatever her husband, Doug have three children: Ryan, Jessica, and Justin. growth happens stays within this type of framework.” In She has been writing for neighboring atGeist.com for over seven talking with Tonya and Tom, I realize that every move years and claims that the best part is meeting all the interesting appears to have been thought out completely. “During the people in her community. downtime of the economy, the council used that time to work to become selfP r i v a t e B a n k i n g sufficient by breaking away from the Hancock County Planning and Building Commission so that when the economy did come back we would be a one-stop shop. We now have our own engineer, building planner and inspector,” Tonya explained.
the Bank that’s Close to home.
Even the newly built Town Hall has proven to be a purposeful, longterm investment. The two-year-old construction project received a Community Achievement Award in 2011 from the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns. “This new structure serves as a fully functional Town Hall for now, but will eventually be the public works building as Town Hall will ultimately move to an integral part of the town center. We were able to pay cash and use today’s money for a future building,” said Tom, who works for Quantum Architecture, Inc.
At the National Bank of Indianapolis, we’re proud to be the Indianapolis area’s largest locally owned national bank. Our private bankers, our directors, even our shareholders live and work in Greater Indianapolis. Decisions are made locally by people close to the community. So if you’re looking for professional banking service from someone who cares, call Sherry Hyska today at 261-9736. She’ll make you feel right at home.
Furthermore, the town council has planned 30 years ahead in designing a re-alignment of 600W to help with traffic flow and maintaining the unification of the town center. “One of the reasons I was attracted to this area was the fact that I could walk or ride my bike to work every day,” said Tonya, who was born and raised in Anderson. She graduated from Ball State and has served in as town manager of McCordsville for the past nine years. “My goals are to work with our town council and the residents of the town to continue moving in a positive direction. I would like to add more community-based events to enhance the quality of life.”

neutering all pets goes a long way to reduce the number of unwanted animals. Additionally, spayed or neutered animals have a reduced risk of health issues.
Neighborly Pet Laws | Daniel Shackle, J.D. Animal issues, as they relate to neighborhoods, are often overlooked. When I took charge of the Indianapolis Animal Care & Control Division of the Department of Public Safety in September of 2012, I was not aware of the existence of many of the animal ordinances in effect in the City of Indianapolis. As a resident of Admirals Bay and a Geist Harbors Property Owner’s Association board member, I would like to pass on some tips and information regarding responsible ownership of our furry friends. Please note that the rules and ordinances outlined below only affect the City of Indianapolis. The four excluded cities in Marion County (Beach Grove, Lawrence, Southport, and Speedway) have their own animal-related ordinances and enforcement component. Marion County has a large pet overpopulation problem. It is estimated that tens of thousands of homeless animals roam the streets and neighborhoods of Indianapolis. Indianapolis Animal Care & Control takes into the shelter approximately 16,000 animals per year. The best way to ensure that we keep this problem under control is to spay or neuter your pets. While not required in Indianapolis, spaying or 48

Geist_September_2013.indd 48
The city’s Community Cat Program, which allows for the trapping, spaying or neutering, and release of feral or stray cats, is effective at reducing the number of stray and feral cats in the community. The idea is that if we can fix as many cats as possible they will reduce in number by attrition. This program has been successful in other cities and can reduce the number of cats brought to the city shelter, thus reducing the number that must be euthanized. If you have stray cats in your neighborhood you may register with IndyFeral as a community cat caretaker. Caretakers are responsible for feeding the cats in their colony, identifying cats which require spay or neuter, and seeking assistance for cats with medical issues. Note: It is a violation of the ordinance to feed “atlarge” cats, or other animals, without being registered with IndyFeral.
Indianapolis has ordinances addressing “at-large” animals. With the exception of cats that are a part of the Community Cat Program, all animals must be on a leash or confined without means of escape and under the control of their owners. Basically, owned cats and dogs must be kept indoors or in a fenced-in yard. Please do not let your cats roam outside, especially if they are not spayed or neutered. At-large animals can be a nuisance to your neighbors, may breed, thus adding to the homeless pet population, may be aggressive toward other animals or people, or they may be at risk of being injured by other animals. “Curbing” is the confusing term for allowing animals to defecate on public streets, byways, municipally owned or public land or buildings, or upon private property. Per ordinance, citizens must remove and dispose of any feces if not on their own property. Obviously, this is difficult to prove, but please be a good neighbor and pick-up after your dog or cat. All owned animals in the City of Indianapolis must have permanent identification. Permanent identification can be accomplished by having a tag affixed to the collar of your

furry friend or an implanted microchip. The identification method must contain the name of the owner, and a current address and phone number. I push the microchip option because the chip cannot be removed from the animal. The reason for this requirement is to allow for the safe return of your pet if they get lost or stolen. You must keep your animal up to date on their rabies vaccination. This rule seems obvious, but Animal Care & Control officers write thousands of citations for this violation every year. We have not seen a dog or cat case of rabies in decades because of the rabies vaccination requirement. Skunks, opossums, and bats do sometimes carry rabies and can be a risk to your pets.
residents of the Geist community; however, there are many more. For a complete listing of all of the ordinances for the City of Indianapolis, please go to www.municode.com/ Library/IN and select “Indianapolis – Marion County.” Animal ordinance, specifically, are under Chapter 531 of the Revised Code of the Consolidated City of Indianapolis – Marion County. Daniel Shackle is the Administrator/ Chief of the Indianapolis Animal Care
There are relatively strict laws about keeping your dog on a tether in your yard. The reason for the ordinance is based on providing the best care and treatment for your animal. If you choose to tether your dog in the yard the tether must be at least 12 feet in length, have swivels on both ends, and the collar must not be a choke collar. Additionally, the animals must have access to food/water, a dog house sufficient to shield it from the elements, and it must be fixed. A dog may not be tethered between the hours of 11:00pm and 6:00am. These are a few examples of ordinances, which apply to

Tony Sandlin, owner of Midwest Balloon Rides, says the landing he did on the Geist Reservoir bridge was nothing out of the ordinary.
Hot Air Balloon Lands On Geist Reservoir Bridge | Tom Britt Tony Sandlin, owner of Midwest Balloon Rides, Inc. (www.MidwestBalloonRides.com), has flown hot air balloons for many years. Sunday August 11, Sandlin and two passengers launched at Noblesville Elementary School around 8:00 p.m. with a southeasterly breeze carrying them toward Geist Reservoir. “Our plan was to land around 116th St., but the winds were blowing a little stronger than we anticipated so we decided to go over the reservoir and land somewhere on the east side,” said Sandlin. “We don’t have a steering wheel so we pretty much have to go wherever the winds take us.”
Fishers police block traffic while Midwest Balloon ground crews deflate the balloon on the Fall Creek Road bridge. 52

Geist_September_2013.indd 52
Once his yellow balloon reached 116th St., the winds slowed from 8-10 miles per hour to about two miles per hour. Sandlin had to make a decision: “Do I try to go over Geist Reservoir and land around 86th and Carroll Rd., or do I set it down on the Fall Creek Rd. Bridge at Geist?”

After consulting with his ground crew, Sandlin decided to land on the bridge since there were no power lines or trees around. Fishers Police were called to help block traffic on the bridge with the assistance of the Department of Natural Resources. “It was a picture-perfect landing,” Tony added. Several boaters and motorists captured photos of the landing which looked like a promo event. Sandlin explained that landing on a street or cul-de-sac is not uncommon, but added, “The fact that the bridge has so much traffic, and there is water on both sides made this a little more unique.” Typically, hot air balloons are only flown in the early morning and at sunset to avoid volatile winds that occur during mid-day. Sandlin refuted initial reports that he made an emergency landing. “We were getting dangerously close to nightfall, so if we had tried to go past the bridge and land beyond the reservoir, then it could have put us in an emergency situation.” Several Geist residents posted messages and photos on the Geist Community Newsletter Facebook page (/atGeist) with stories about a balloon landing on their property or street. While some people felt inconvenienced by the landing, most were very receptive and offered to help the two-person ground grew deflate the balloon – and share a celebratory glass of champagne!

| Lynda Hedberg Thies Dr. Concetta Raimondi, superintendent, Lawrence Township Schools, announced August 14th she will retire to pursue her dream of teaching at the university level. Dr. Raimondi has accepted a position at Indiana University in Bloomington. Dr. Raimondi will end her tenure December 31, 2013. Although her new position started in August, she wanted to ensure a smooth transition for the township. “It was difficult to let go because I am very passionate about Lawrence Township Schools and I am very proud of the work we accomplished together," said Dr. Raimondi, in an interview with atGeist. The school board has begun the search process for Dr. Raimondi’s replacement. Carol Helmus, president, MSDLT Board of Education, appointed Board Member Kathy Varie to spearhead the search. Ms. Varie will be responsible for interviewing search firms and hiring an interim superintendent, if necessary. “We knew this was Dr. Raimondi’s dream job, so now our goal is to build on what Dr. Raimondi established and find the very best candidate for the school corporation," Helmus said. "We will include input from the entire board, colleagues and the community once the search firm has been hired. Dr. Raimondi positioned Lawrence Township in such a wonderful place to move forward in a positive direction.” Lynda is a Freelance Writer, Entrepreneur, and Executive Regional Vice President with Arbonne International for over ten years. A lifelong Indianapolis resident, she is married with two children. What she loves most about her experience is making a difference to others and her community. SEPTEMBER 2013

Geist Fulbright Scholar Headed for Year in Germany 58

| Kathi Moore Omi cried when she heard the news that her granddaughter, Emily Krauter, had been admitted into the prestigious Fulbright US Student Program. Krauter, a recent Indiana University graduate, is moving to Omi’s homeland of Germany for one year to assist in facilitating cultural exchange with students.

The all-expenses program is funded by the US government. The scholarship application process is extremely competitive. Annually, some 1,900 students are placed in 140 countries worldwide with the fundamental principle of international partnership at the core of the Fulbright mission.
Emily will be assisting a 7/8th grade teacher in Rotenburg an Der Fulda, Germany, teaching English, and serving as a mentor and go-to person when students have questions about American culture. She feels her background serving as the new member educator for her sorority, and teaching English at an after-school program, plus participation in a bi-lingual teaching course “It all worked out so perfectly, at IU will help her. She also credits Lawrence it must be God’s Central theater teacher, Kathleen Horrigan, for inspiring her to teach culture using a series of plan.” one-act plays – a tactic she plans to employ at the German school.
Emily’s application process started her junior year of college. While studying abroad, Krauter learned that a friend had applied for the grant. Emily had already fallen in love with the German culture, perhaps awakening family roots inside her. She too was anxious to apply, yet concerned she’d studied German for just two years at IU. Part of her application included an interview to be conducted completely in the German language. So, Emily had her father and grandmother, Omi, speak the language with her at home in preparation for the interview.
It is clear that Emily is an extremely bright and mature young woman, an outstanding quality in most Fulbright recipients whose alumni include ambassadors, members of Congress, judges, heads of corporations, university presidents, journalists, artists, professors, and teachers. Bose Corporation founder Amar Bose, actor John Lithgow, and economist Joseph Stiglitz are among notable former grantees. s um $18! M 3 nly o for
During her grant year, Emily will live at the University of Kassel working on her master’s degree and teaching 10-12 hours per week. She’ll also be able to travel to visit cousins and other extended family members. “Its serendipitous how it all worked out,” she commented. “It all worked out so perfectly, it must be God’s plan.” Now Emily’s mother and Omi are concerned she’ll get to Germany and never come back to Indy! (Omi’s book, “From the Heart’s Closet” about being a young German-American living in America during WWII, is available at http://amzn.to/19yzmpD.

| Tom Britt Many Geist residents have longed to have a neighborhood identity. Indianapolis, Fishers, Fortville, and McCordsville all become Geist when you live within earshot of the reservoir. Thanks to the Geist Impoundment Fund and its overseers, Geist now has a logo that you’ll start seeing more of in the coming months. “The one thing we heard at our community meetings early on was that Geist residents did not want to lose their identity,” said Jeff Lantz, one of nine Geist Impoundment Fund (“GIF”) board members and 10-year president of the Canal Place Property Owners Association. “We felt that of all the projects we’re looking to do, this could have the biggest impact for the lowest cost.” Last year, the GIF commissioned RLR Associates Inc. (www.rlr.biz) to create a logo for the new “Geist District.” This followed on the heels of the Nickel Plate District announcement in August 2012. Other districts being discussed include an area near Connor Prairie, 96th and Allisonville Rd., and one at Saxony. “We want businesses, homeowner associations, events, and residents that live here to embrace the logo and be proud of our area,” added Lantz.
Sailboat sculpture featuring the new Geist District logo inside the Brooks School Rd. and Fall Creek Rd. roundabout.
Possibly the first structures to sport the Geist District logo will be the GIF’s next agenda project: Roundabout sculptures. Board members have been working with designers to construct nautical-themed sculptures for the 96th and Fall Creek Rd. and the Brooks School and Fall Creek Rd. roundabouts. And, the statuary won’t only be cosmetic. In addition to being decorative, the sculptures will actually make the roundabouts safer by impeding visibility from inbound traffic, forcing drivers to slow down. Construction could begin as early as next spring. Signage with the new logo will also be placed at key entry points to the loosely-defined Geist District along 116th St. to the north, Olio Rd. on the east, and along major inbound traffic arteries like 96th and 106th Sts. on the west. september 2013

NEWS
With roughly $3.5 million to spend on capital improvement projects, Lantz estimated that the GIF-funded sculptures and branding will leave about $2.5 million to spend over the next three years. “It’s surprising how expensive it is to do these types of projects,” said Lantz. The GIF fund is new tax revenue that was generated from the Fishers-Geist annexation – money earmarked specifically for use in the newly-annexed area. After the sculptures are completed, GIF board members are going to revisit walkability and accessibility projects, and water quality issues that loom on the horizon. All projects, including the Geist District branding and sculptures must ultimately be approved by the Fishers Town Council. Lantz has been surprised as the high level of cooperation and support they have received. “I think the annexation has been a good thing for our community. It was inevitable at some point that we would become part of Fishers. I think there are a lot of great things going on in the Town.” Anyone wishing to utilize the new Geist District logo can obtain the branding guidelines and files by visiting www.atGeist.com/GeistDistrict. Fishers Mom Delivers Her Own Baby | Tom Britt . Photos | Brenda Staples Photography Imagine you are 8 1/2 months pregnant, you’ve been sent home twice already from the hospital for false labor, and your doctor is on vacation. You’ve enjoyed a typical Sunday afternoon including a trip to Costco and dinner with your parents. Now imagine delivering your baby, by yourself, just a few hours after going to bed. Meet the Hake family from Bradford
Knoll in Fishers – including its newest member! Leslie and Christopher Hake live near 106th and Cumberland Rd. in Fishers with their two year old son, Jackson. On the morning of August 5, Leslie woke up around 12:30 a.m., to some discomfort caused by the baby. This wasn’t the first time she had felt this sort of pain. Following the advice of her doctor, she took a hot shower to relax, hoping the pain would subside. As she returned to bed, Chris awoke. SEPTEMBER 2013

“What are you doing?” he asked. “I think I’m in labor,” Leslie responded. Recalling two previous false alarms, Chris jokingly told Leslie, “Well, if we leave now, we can be back home by 4:00 a.m.” Leslie’s pains became more intense and closer together. At 1:55 a.m., Leslie paged her doctor. In the 10 minutes it took for the doctor to return the call, Leslie was in full labor in her master bathroom. Chris called his mother-in-law to come take care of Jackson so he could rush Leslie to the hospital. Chris returned to check on Leslie just moments later and he could see the baby’s head.
the tape, “This baby was on her own timeline.” “I think everyone was in shock when we arrived,” said Ortiz. “Leslie did an amazing job.” As for Jackson, he slept through the night and visited his new sister at the hospital later that morning. He’s still adjusting, complaining only when his
little sister cries. Mom and baby are doing great. Both are getting some rest between the every-four-hours feedings. Chris has a new found appreciation for his wife after her ordeal. “She handled it like a pro, I have more respect for what she did (childbirth) than ever before,” he said shaking his head. “I know I couldn’t have done it.”
Don’t hide your legs for another summer!
“Call 911,” shouted Leslie to Chris, who by this point – and by his own admission – was in full panic mode. In the mere seconds that it took for Chris to give the 911 operator their home address, and the operator to sound the alarm for neighboring Fishers Fire Department Station 94, Leslie gave birth to her six lb., 10 oz. girl, Kennedy, at 2:17 a.m. First responders arrived to find Chris standing at the front door pointing to the upstairs bath. He told them, “Hurry up, she just had the baby!” Fishers Firefighters Bobby Schlageter and Will Ortiz rushed upstairs only to find Leslie peacefully holding her baby swaddled in a blanket. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” said Schlageter. “Most of the time we are able to get there before the baby is born and get them to the hospital in time.” Michael Snowden, executive director, Hamilton County Public Safety Communications, admitted this 911 call did not follow their normal protocols. While operators are trained how to deal with childbirth calls, Snowden conceded after listening to

| Kara Reibel he Geist 5K has had a tremendously positive impact on many who live in our community. One such example is AJ Brisben. As an eight year old running in the Geist 5K with his family, AJ received positive encouragement for being a runner. Finishing in the Top 100 the past two years has made him realize that he’s good at the sport.
T
So good that this summer, AJ qualified and competed in his age bracket in the Junior Olympics. Earlier in the year, AJ had joined Fishers Fire, a local track and cross country club. Fishers Fire is one of a few in central Indiana for kids ages 6-18. “The club is well-run, the kids are great, and all are driven and competitive,” said AJ’s mom, Laura. “I can’t say enough about Coach Norris, Coach Collesano and Fishers Fire.” Laura Brisben is a former Lawrence Central assistant track and cross country coach who now coaches at Holy Cross Lutheran School, where AJ is a sixth grader. “Running is something that we share as a family. It has been exciting to see AJ pick up on it and excel at distance running,” said Laura. Four years ago, she started a running club at Holy Cross because the school was too new for team sports. The club has been used as a platform to promote exercise, and has succeeded in getting kids to love running. The club has been instrumental in encouraging kids to join the track and cross country teams. “We owe a lot to the Geist 5K for building our first sport,” said Laura. The Holy Cross school theme is to ‘Run and bring Glory2God4Ever’. At Holy Cross, the coaches are pleased that so many of their runners, even kindergarteners, finish the Geist 5K. Governed by USA Track & Field (USATF), the Indiana Youth Track Association oversees area clubs and meets/ competitions. The USATF has 16 regions for the US. Indiana and Illinois make up Region 7. Those kids who placed in the top 5 in their regional event qualified for the National Junior Olympics, held this year in Greensboro, NC. Several of AJ’s teammates from Fishers Fire also qualified for the Junior Olympics, as did many of Indiana’s top high school champions. “It was an eye-opening experience,” according to Laura. “Seeing what is required to compete at the top at this level is astounding. The kids from the southern states do quite well.” AJ running on Sunday, July 28th. He finished 37th in the nation for the 1500 final, and 38th in the nation for the 800. 70

Based on his times, AJ finished where he expected to, and is now motivated to improve. “After the meet, AJ began doing

research on the stats and locations of where the top finishers in his events live. To participate in nationals at his age is incredible. We strive to keep it fun,” said Laura. The sport is growing, and it is exciting to see so many kids taking an interest in running. AJ is certainly motivated. “I’m just excited to start up again with Fishers Fire CC in September!” he said. Kara Reibel lives in the Geist area with her family. In addition to writing, she owns Geist Pilates.

A Howling Good Time For A Great Cause
Susan and Kevin at the Halloween Howl in October 2012
October 19 How two women took a Halloween house party & turned it into a huge fundraising event | Mary Ryan
E
ight years ago, two women with philanthropic hearts decided to throw a Halloween party. The ladies had about a month to put

this soirée together, so they hit the ground running. As the pieces fell into place they thought it would be a great idea to do the party to benefit Dayspring (an Indianapolis homeless shelter) because both were on the board of directors, and knew the charity could use the money. They decided to ask guests to bring silent auction gifts. The ladies put together a putting contest and sold chances to win gift cards and prizes. 160 guests and $7,000 in proceeds later the Halloween Howl was born.
Lisa Glenn and Susan Summers are the co-founders of this amazing event. The first Halloween Howl was held at Lisa and Kevin Scheib’s home. This year, Lisa and Susan, with the help of their Halloween Howl team, are pleased to support the ALS–Indiana Chapter with proceeds from the 8th Annual Halloween Howl. The event will be held October 19, at the Murat Shrine Temple. This year’s Howl will honor Kevin Scheib, their dear friend and a Geist resident. “Kevin has been a strong supporter and volunteer for the Howl every year, and is a

Woman’s Life member,” Susan explained. “With so many people close to Kevin and appreciative of his support, it seemed appropriate to support the ALS Association in his honor.” In 2012, Kevin was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease which affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Essentially, your mind continues to function but quits communicating with your motor neurons and muscles, causing debilitating weakness specific to arms, legs, speech, breathing and swallowing. Late-stage patients may become totally paralyzed. Sadly, there is no cure for ALS, but there is a wonderful organization in Indianapolis – the ALS-Indiana Chapter – that assists Hoosier patients and their families through this difficult illness. “Kevin has said that although he feels he has lost control of most things in his life, he at least has peace of mind knowing that the ALS Association is there to help support his family and caregivers,” said Lisa, in describing the assistance received from ALS. “I honestly don’t know how our family would be getting through this difficult time were it not for the help of the ALS Association.” The event will host 300 to 400 guests who all share a love of live music (by The Bishops!), dancing, cocktails and, most importantly, fundraising. It’s for adults only (must be 21) and is a costume party! Prepare to be wowed by the get-ups you’ll see. Lisa and Susan enjoy group costumes with the other Women’s Life members! There is always a costume contest, so bring your A-game. Lisa has lived at Geist for 18 years. Susan grew up in Carmel, and has lived in Fishers 20 years. “Halloween
