BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
THE MILL TAVERN
Writer / Melissa Gibson
It’s the neighborhood spot to enjoy a burger, beer and time with friends in the community.
The Mill Tavern has been the go-to for many since 2010, and Owners Chris and Kristin Weiler are once again hosting their annual Joey’s Stocking fundraiser.
It’s in honor of Chris’s late nephew, a young man who passed away with several medical complications nearly two decades ago. The couple then hosted a fundraiser to help with medical bills, and after seeing the impact the community had on the family, the Weilers decided to do it again with another family, and the tradition grew.
“We made a promise that we would continue doing this for other families, but when we opened here 14 years ago, we were having trouble finding local families,” Chris Weiler said. “We found that a lot of people in need have a lot of pride, and you try to reach out but it’s not always received.”
They adjusted, working with a local nonprofit before it closed, and then finding Open Doors of Washington Township and partnering with the organization for the past several years.
“Open Doors touches a lot of the basics,” Weiler said. “They have food and clothing, and it’s a really good program run by good people.”
The nonprofit also supports several seasonal programs, from Back to School to Thanksgiving for families in the Westfield area.
Year after year the couple matches the amount donated by members of the community, and typically donates around $4,000 to Open Doors.
As customers walk through The Mill’s front door, they can select one of several stockings cut in shapes like a gingerbread man, Santa, a snowman and others. Donate $5 for the stocking, write a message on it, and watch the number of stockings grow throughout the tavern as the season progresses.
Messages range from pictures to holiday greetings and everything in between.
This year they have a new goal for donations.
“Coca-Cola has been generous in adding their own donations to our efforts,” Weiler said. “They will match our donations up to $6,000. We’re excited about the additional funds. We’re just a small little pub, and
around the holidays there’s a lot of joy in this space. Let’s get the walls covered in stockings.”
With Joey in mind and a heart for giving back to their community, the Weilers hope to make more of an impact this year with the help of neighbors, friends, customers and the support of Coca-Cola Consolidated.
Weiler is reminded of the way the Westfield community rallied when the tavern was closed during the pandemic.
“We were shut down and they supported us,” he said. “They raised $20,000 for us. It’s sort of our responsibility to give back. You want to share your privilege. We’ve been extremely fortunate to not only survive this long, but to thrive. They’ve taken good care of us and this is just sort of automatic for us. We’re not special; it’s just the right thing to do.”
The fundraiser will be active from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day.
Keep moving.

RISE FOR THIS OCCASION
RISE’N ROLL COMES TO WESTFIELD
Writer / Ashley Watters
/ Brian Brosmer
If the smell of warm, rich, nose-leading, saliva-inducing baking is the only thing that will drag you from the comfort of your covers, then you need to try Westfield’s new Rise’n Roll Bakery. The Amish-style bakery is a refreshing deviation from the typical, offering award-winning confections that are baked fresh daily.
“Our bakery has earned recognition for its authentic recipes and dedication to quality,” says Casey McGaughey, co-owner of Rise’n Roll’s Westfield store. “This commitment to quality and tradition has built a loyal customer following statewide.”
A new addition to the Rise’n Roll family, the Westfield location opened its doors at the end of September and hasn’t disappointed. The launch was a success with giveaways and a healthy turnout. A few lucky attendees even snagged themselves free doughnuts for a year, but most keep coming back for a taste
of that special Hoosier hospitality.
“The bakery was named Indiana’s best doughnut shop by Visit Indiana, a testament to the love and loyalty of our customers,” says McGaughey.
The bakery offers items such as doughnuts, cookies, pies, cinnamon rolls and bread, as well as specialty items like cheeses. Of course, the menu wouldn’t be complete without the award-winning cinnamon caramel doughnut, named Overall Fan Favorite by The Underground Donut Tour three years in a row.
“Each item is made the old-fashioned way, free from preservatives and full of flavor,” says McGaughey. “The new Westfield store is especially excited to showcase the beloved cinnamon caramel doughnut that draws visitors from near and far.”
Founded in 2001 by an Amish family, Rise’n Roll has expanded far beyond its humble beginnings. The story begins with a young Amish couple who baked favorites passed down through generations, initially selling them directly from their front porch. A dream that began in Shipshewana became a reality when the couple opened their first bakery in Middlebury, Indiana, in 2004.
Eventually the bakery was sold to a nonAmish family who continues the tradition of preservative-free baked goods. Now, McGaughey is thrilled to continue that and bring the comfort of Amish-style baking to the Westfield area.
The Westfield location is at 16030 Spring Mill Road, Suite D in Westfield, in the Spring Mill Station development. It’s the newest addition to more than 15 locations spread across northern and central Indiana.
McGaughey hopes to showcase the true tradition of Amish-style baking that is evident in every bite of Rise’n Roll’s mouthwatering treats, and the comfortable atmosphere you’ll find within the store.
“Visitors to the Westfield location can expect a warm, inviting atmosphere where the essence of traditional Amish baking is at the forefront,” says McGaughey.

FROM PASSION TO PURPOSE
JAMIE DEGLER PARLAYS HER LOVE FOR THE WRITTEN WORD INTO TURN THE PAGE BOOKSTORE
Some people dive wholeheartedly into their hobbies, while others turn passion into purpose. Such is the case with Jamie Degler.
Degler has always had a passion for books. In fact, tucking herself into a cozy nook with a good read is one of her favorite pastimes, and one that she wanted to share with others in her community. In 2018 she did exactly that by opening the doors to Turn the Page.
“I have always loved to read,” she says. “With the development of downtown Westfield, I thought a bookstore would be a wonderful addition. I was incredibly blessed that everything came together, which allowed me to follow my passion.”
Turn the Page is a warm, welcoming independent bookstore located in the heart of downtown Westfield. The store is packed with books from a variety of genres and has something for all ages, including a dedicated children’s area. Patrons are invited to leisurely stroll the stacks and then stay awhile to delve into a new selection.
“I want the store to be a place of relaxation,” says Degler. “We have a small sitting space and a sweet little porch where many can sit and enjoy their books.”
Degler wants Turn the Page to be more than a welcoming place to read. She wants to create conversations for Westfield residents. “Our staff is truly unique,” she says. “We are knowledgeable and available to suggest your next read or help you find whatever you’re looking for. If you don’t see something, we’ll order it for you. Helping customers and chatting about books is our primary focus.”
To help further those conversations, Turn the Page also hosts two book clubs that are open to the public and don’t require sign-up. Patrons are invited to come and go as they please. One book club focuses on a variety of genres, meeting every third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. and every third Wednesday at 3 p.m. The second group focuses solely on rom-coms and meets on the last Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m.
Turn the Page also offers quarterly subscription boxes available for purchase for youths and adults. These well-loved packages come stocked with two books and a candle for adults, and two books, a bookmark and a candy stick for kids. These unique subscription boxes make great gifts and delight book lovers in Westfield and beyond.
Additionally, Degler hopes to create more community inclusion by partnering with others to showcase what small businesses have to offer Westfield. She encourages book lovers to check back for upcoming events, which will include murder-mystery parties, silent reading at Urban Apples, book preview events and author signings.
Degler hopes these events will expose Westfield and the surrounding areas to the vibrant small-business offerings in the area.
“It’s really important for people to know that we can only exist and keep the doors open with their support,” she says. “There are many places to buy books, so making the choice to shop and support us really makes a huge difference that most people just simply aren’t aware of.”

GET UP TO SPEED ON CURRENT AND UPCOMING LOCAL HOLIDAY EVENTS
e’re marking our calendars for the busy season, and the City of Westfield will offer plenty for the community to do in the coming weeks. They are gearing up for another holiday season, featuring all of the traditions families and community members have come to expect, but with a few added bonuses.
The Westfield Ice Ribbon season kicked off on November 23 at Grand Junction Plaza. It’s the second year of offering an ice-skating opportunity for the entire family. Tickets are available now for a 90-minute skate session and include skate rental. The synthetic ice rink is open from mid-November through January 4.
“It’s a good entry-level skating experience,” said Kayla Arnold, director of communications for the City of Westfield. “We don’t have to worry about the weather and keeping it frozen. If you fall, you’re not going to get wet. Last year we had some great feedback from parents of little ones and they loved
that the kids didn’t find it too scary.”
The Ice Ribbon is located at the north end of Grand Junction Plaza at 225 North Union Street. Tickets are required and purchased before arrival at theiceatgrandjunction.com. They are $12 for ages 11 and older, and $10 for children under 10.
Visitors can try the new experience throughout the holiday season, but there will only be one day when they can gather to see the official tree lighting in the City of Westfield. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on December 7, the annual Westfield In Lights tree lighting ceremony will celebrate the holiday season with tradition, community and a ton of fun. The community event is held at Grand Junction Station and presented by the Downtown Westfield Association.
“Westfield in Lights is one of our premier community events,” said Mayor Scott Willis. “I may be biased as I love the holidays, but
seeing so many families make this an annual tradition is incredible.”
In addition to the official tree lighting ceremony, families can enjoy a variety of other activities for an entire afternoon of
entertainment.
“We have face painting, carnival games, food vendors, retail merchants and live entertainment,” Arnold said. “We’ll have live llamas and visits from Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The Ice Ribbon will also be open during that time.”
Mrs. Claus will make an appearance at Something Splendid, located at 217 Mill Street, for those who’d like to stop by for some cookies and a photo. No reservations are required.
The tree lighting ceremony will begin at 5:50 p.m. on the main stage, where Mayor Willis and special guests will light the tree at 6 p.m. It’s a busy event, and the City of Westfield wants to make parking and navigating the area as easy as possible.
There will be a free shuttle service picking up and dropping off guests who park
at Christ United Methodist Church at 318 North Union Street, and Westfield Intermediate School at 17710 Shamrock Boulevard, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Parking is also available in the lot at the southwest corner of Poplar and Park streets.
If you’re coming out to skate, visit with your favorite holiday characters or see the official tree lighting, don’t forget to bring your letter to Santa.
“We have direct service to the North Pole and mailboxes will be at Grand Junction Park, Westfield City Services, the Westfield Fire Department headquarters and the Westfield Washington Public Library,” Arnold said. “Be sure to include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope for a quick response.” Those mailboxes are open now through December 15.

THE PURSUIT INSTITUTE
HELPING STUDENTS PREPARE FOR THEIR FUTURES
Preparing for the future after high school can be overwhelming for many students. Hamilton County schools leaders witnessed these challenges and consequently created the Pursuit Institute to help students discover their passions and be equipped for their next steps.
The Pursuit Institute is an independent Career and Technical Education (CTE) district that is a collaboration of the six Hamilton County school systems. The goal of the institute is for students to have the opportunity to experience meaningful jobs. Whether students plan to enter the workforce after graduation or continue their education with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, the Pursuit Institute helps students have a clear connection between the classroom and a career.
Before the Pursuit Institute, Hamilton County students had to travel to the J. Everett Light Career Center in Indianapolis for CTE. Students faced challenges with this arrangement like limited spots in classes and transportation issues. To alleviate those issues, the Pursuit Institute was launched in June 2021 as the Hamilton County Center
Writer / Rebecca Wood
for Career Achievement. In October 2022 the state awarded it CTE status, which provides $500,000 in federal funding annually to the Pursuit Institute and the public school district served.
The Pursuit Institute opened in August 2023 and is currently in its second year of programming. Enrollment increased by over 100 students this year.
The Pursuit Institute aims to keep students close to home, increase revenue to the school district, expand and centralize employer engagement, and maximize impact by coordinating grants and philanthropic investments.
Students can enroll in 13 full two-year programs. An additional four paid capstone experiences are available for those who have taken construction, civil construction, automotive services or welding programs at their home school. The Pursuit Institute offers 24 different certifications, 94 college credits, three apprenticeships, and innumerable hours of work-based learning experiences throughout their programs. Offered programs include choices like
agriculture, aviation, cosmetology, cyber security and many more.
Pursuit Institute programs are offered with on-site experiences at local business and community partners. These programs utilize a combination of virtual and in-person academic opportunities with input and instruction by industry professionals.
The Pursuit Institute partners with many Hamilton County businesses and community partners including Reynolds Farm Equipment, Riverview Hospital and Chariot Automotive Group among others. These industry professionals ensure students receive practical, real-world experiences.
“We want to create an opportunity to link student interest with careers, and to put them into as many real-life situations as possible,” says Kurt Cantlon, the executive director of the Pursuit Institute.
Cantlon is a Westfield High School graduate with deep roots in Hamilton County. He is invested in promoting the growth of the local community and how students can be a
part of that process. He finds joy in helping students find their passion and success.
“We have a lot of options in Hamilton County,” says Cantlon. “There isn’t a need to leave to do a job you are interested and passionate about.”
The Pursuit Institute is always looking for new business and community partners, and those who want to work with students. For more information on being a Pursuit Institute partner or about the program, check out their website at thepursuitinstitute.org. Their phone number is 317-210-3195.

NEW FOOD ON THE BLOCK
GRINGTINOS IS FINDING FAST POPULARITY ON UNION STREET
It’s an exciting time for Westfield. With so much new development and growth as downtown Westfield has become a vibrant area filled with new local establishments, Jake Weber and his wife, Kenia Azaeda, felt it was the perfect time to open their restaurant, Gringtinos.
Gringtinos opened to the public on August 11, and Weber says the experience so far has been great, and that he could not be happier with how the community has reacted.
Gringtinos is one of Westfield’s newest restaurants. Weber says the name is a mashup of the couple, where he’s a “gringo” and she is “Latino”. Azaeda is from Bolivia, studied at a prestigious culinary school and was into fine dining. Weber always worked in corporate America and preferred a more
casual pub setting. So Gringtinos was the compromise, serving upscale food in a casual environment. Inside, there is a cozy, modern industrial aesthetic with exposed bricks, dark paint accents and brass light fixtures. During warmer months there is a large retractable window, and outdoor tables and chairs. On occasion, Gringtinos has live musical performers.
The menu is a mix of pub food of North America and South America. Azaeda is also the main chef, and has created a menu of Latin cuisine and American classics.
The South American portion of the menu features chicken, barbacoa and cheese empanadas, filet mignon, chicken, beef, shrimp and barbacoa tacos, and much more. American pub classics on the menu include
soft pretzels, chicken wings, mozzarella sticks, salads, burgers and pasta dishes.
Gringtinos is also a kid-friendly restaurant offering kids’ options of mac and cheese, quesadillas, spaghetti, grilled cheese, a kids burger, and hand-breaded chicken fingers.
According to Weber, they plan to evolve their menu every couple of months. Most recently they added Detroit-style pizza to the menu to play homage to Weber’s hometown. They plan on adding more menu items at the beginning of next year.
They also serve brunch on the weekends with a menu that features breakfast items like waffles, French toast, crepes, omelets, eggs Benedict, and breakfast burritos, and lunch items such as a club sandwich, BLT and chicken salad croissant.
Gringtino’s is located at 110 South Union Street in Westfield.

NOAH AND ADAM MARTIN
Writer / Renée Larr
Two young brothers from Westfield, Noah Martin, 9, and Adam Martin, 8, have left an indelible impression on the gymnastics world.
Their recent accomplishment of securing a spot on the esteemed Indiana USA gymnastics team - a feat that only the top-five athletes from each state can achieve - is a source of pride for their community. The brothers, who are students at Shamrock Springs Elementary, are also part of the boys gymnastics team at DeVeau’s School of Gymnastics in Fishers, a team that has consistently placed first or second at the state meet for the past decade.
The Martin brothers, with their dedication and versatility, have been practicing at DeVeau’s for the past two years. Adam is at level four and Noah at level 5. Both boys are all-rounders, participating in all six events including floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, parallel bars, vault and high bar, showcasing their diverse skills and commitment to the sport.
“As far as the boys go, Adam is a lot more playful but still serious about gymnastics,” says his coach, Jeff Greene. “Both are very fun to work within a team dynamic. Noah is extremely serious about his love of the sport. Both boys fit in so well on the team and are both hilarious. They’re both very athletic and very talented.”
The boys’ unwavering dedication to gymnastics is truly impressive. They
devote four times a week for three hours each day to practice, a significant time commitment considering their participation in other activities like taekwondo. Noah recently achieved his black belt at Master Yoo’s in Carmel, a testament to his dedication over the past four years. Adam is also on his way to achieving his black belt, just two belts away.
“My wife and I admit, I didn’t know much about the time commitment the sport required initially,” says Kevin Smith, Noah and Adam’s father. We’re learning about the process together. Noah is completely dedicated to being the best he can be. All parents can understand how much it takes to get their kids to all the activities they enjoy.”
Greene says the value of gymnastics includes a structured and consistent environment where kids learn life skills such as confidence, discipline and teamwork. Kevin says his boys have learned all those attributes and more from participating in gymnastics.
Noah and Adam recently participated in the Region 5 2024 State Teams and Regional Testing Clinic in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in October. This event is a prestigious platform where young gymnasts from the region come together to showcase their skills and compete at a higher level. Greene says it was an honor for the boys to participate in such an event.
COPPER TRACE MAKES ROOM
FOR NEW RESIDENTS
Copper Trace — CarDon & Associates’ senior living community in Westfield — has now opened its doors to new residents and families.
CarDon recently unveiled the community’s $8.6 million expansion, which more than doubled the number of assisted living apartments, with the 40 new apartment homes consisting of 27 one-bedroom, 6 large one-bedroom and 7 two-bedroom residences.
Other benefits of the expansion include such new amenities as a renovated dining room, fireside lounge, piano lounge, activity area, and new fitness room. This adds 37,500 square feet full of fresh décor, fun activities and friendly faces to the main campus building.
“This expansion comfortably accommodates the growing needs of seniors in Westfield and surrounding communities,” said CarDon President and CEO Kent Rodgers. “It offers opportunities for seniors who want to remain self-sufficient with the assurance of assistance when needed, as well as individuals coming out of short-term rehabilitation who might benefit from assisted living care.” (Rehab stays are available for all ages — Copper Trace recently provided care for a 34-year-old military dietitian.)
With assisted living, rehabilitation, long-term care and memory support, Copper Trace provides a comprehensive continuum of care.
“It’s the best around,” resident Jan Rushing said. “The nurses really care, and it’s beautiful here. People here have been very comforting to me and my family.”
Other residents describe the community as a home that not only suits their needs and brings them comfort but pleases their loved ones as well.
“It’s so easy to get to know people here and make friends,” resident Betty Belshaw said. “Everyone is so friendly and feels like family. I feel very at home, and I love the new expansion. It’s very warm and cozy.”
AMENITIES INCLUDE
• The Bistro — an expanded, fully renovated dining venue.
• The Colonnade private dining room.
• The Fireside Lounge — a double-sided fireplace lounge where residents can chat with friends and family over coffee from the Fireside Café.
• The Harmony Lounge, where everyone can enjoy live piano music.
• Copper Terrace, an outdoor living space perfect for reading, bird-watching, you name it.
• A beauty shop, movie theater, activity area and more!
Consistently recognized as one of the best places to live in Indiana and the country, Copper Trace’s home base of Westfield is close to such family-friendly attractions as Conner Prairie, the Clay Terrace Mall, Birdies Miniature Golf and the Grand Park Sports Campus — home of the Indianapolis Colts Training Camp and Pacers Athletic Center.
