MURPHY'S CRAFT HOUSE COMING TO GEIST FORMER GATHERING LOCATION TO GET A NEW RESTAURANT FROM AN OLD NAME
Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Demi Lawrence
Remember the television show, “Cheers,” with Ted Danson? A place where “everyone knows your name” and what you like to eat and drink? It’s that type of comfort that brings people from all corners of Indianapolis to a local pub and eatery: Murphy’s PubHouse.
Becoming a local pub and eatery means a place has to have a signature feature. Murphy’s has several items they are famous for serving to their customers. Their popular items include the Hoosier Pork Tenderloin and steak burgers along with their famous pizzas and hand-cut steaks. They always offer daily food and drink specials.
"There are a lot of customers who have been with us since day one and that always makes When you step into Murphy’s PubHouse, you feel like you are doing the right thing, conveniently located at 11650 Olio which is serving quality food and drinks Rd., in the Kroger Shopping Center in at a reasonable value with great service," Fishers, it feels like walking into Cheers. Stonebraker said. This sense of belonging and family is the feel that brothers and owners Ryan Stonebraker noted that some customers and Craig Stonebraker want Murphy’s love the food and atmosphere so much, they PubHouse to manifest. are in more than once a week. "Some people 12 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2016 / atGeist.com
are in here five times a week," Stonebraker stated. "I love it. They tell me they appreciate the family-friendly atmosphere. They can bring the kids and enjoy a great meal and family time. A lot of the same cooks have been with Murphy’s since it opened four years ago, and they take pride in knowing their food is being enjoyed." "Our family has been involved in the food and beverage business in Indianapolis since the 1950s," Stonebraker said with a proud smile. "Our grandfather, Orville, coowned and operated a restaurant called The Huddle, and our father, Orville (Stoney), owned and operated several restaurants on the east side of Indy and has owned the East Street Stoney's Liquor Store in Indianapolis for over 40 years."
In later years, The Ah Barista Cafe in downtown Indianapolis and the legendary Murphy’s Steakhouse in Indianapolis were also family-owned and operated. The success of the initial Murphy’s PubHouse has been so welcoming that a second location was opened at 6120 E. Thompson Rd. at the corner of Thompson and Arlington Roads. The success of the three restaurants has allowed the Stonebraker brothers to start a fourth establishment in Geist in the Marsh Shopping Center on Fox Road where The Gathering used to be. They have never been so excited about a new restaurant as they are about the Fox Road adventure opening in the fall. They can't wait to provide a much-needed restaurant to the south shores of Geist as well as Oaklandon, Lawrence and Indy. "This will be our biggest place to date," Stonebraker said. "We will have more tables, live music and a large patio." A final name hasn't been picked out yet. "Some of the possible names include Brakers, Murphy’s Crafthouse and Murphy’s at Geist," Stonebraker said. "We want the neighborhood people to pick out the final name, so we have been asking for help on our Facebook page, facebook.com/MurphysPubHouse. We will let people know when the name has been chosen."

location is already in the works in Carmel at 146th Street and River Road, south of the Rickers gas station, and a 20th store is planned for the Zionsville/Whitestown area in the Anson Development at The Whitestown Park exit. "We have had a great history and have been lucky to keep growing," Arnold stated. "We have had incredibly loyal customers over the years who appreciate our quality." The company has been in business for over 31 years. Classic Cleaners started in January 1985 when Carl Arnold and his sons, John and Steve Arnold, opened their first two stores, Professional Cleaners, in northeast Indianapolis. They became Classic Cleaners soon after. More stores opened later, and in 1990, Leon Neal, now retired, bought into Classic Cleaners as a partner. He was in charge of quality control and wedding gown cleaning and preservation, a popular service Classic Cleaners offers to the bridal community.
"WE HAVE HAD A GREAT HISTORY AND HAVE BEEN LUCKY TO KEEP GROWING." Classic Cleaners is the only cleaner in central Indiana endorsed by the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists and offers a 100 percent guarantee on gown preservation.
"We have always tried to use the safest cleaning products available and have been recognized by the Department of Environment Management for our safe use of chemicals," Arnold said.
Tim Day came on board in 1993 as a partner, serving as Operations Manager responsible for site planning, store construction and mechanical operations. Classic Cleaners also started its first pickup and delivery service and now delivers to a large radius of communities from as far south as Center Grove and as far north as Lebanon and Cicero.
O'Brien noted that Classic Cleaners also contributes to local school programs and not-for-profit organizations. In May 2016, Classic Cleaners offered complimentary cleaning for over 100 dresses and suits for Damar Services of Indianapolis’ annual prom.
Shawna O'Brien, who handles marketing for Classic Cleaners, said that in 2004, Classic Cleaners became the first dry cleaner in the Indianapolis area to introduce 24-hour drop-off and pickup locker service. "People leaving on business trips or vacations love the convenience of being able to get their clothes at any time," O'Brien said. "They have told us in person and on our Facebook and Twitter accounts how much they appreciate the ability to stop off and pick up their cleaned items at any time day or night with our 24-hour locker service." The 24-hour drop-off and locker service features were first added to the store at the 131st and Hazel Dell location in Carmel. The service is now available in 14 of their 19 stores. In 2012, Classic Cleaners invested over $300,000 to convert to eco-friendly cleaning machines and fluid. Classic Cleaners stopped using perchloroethylene (PERC) and invested in new eco-friendly cleaning machinery and fluids, resulting in a better cleaning service and long-term energy savings. INDY DUCT SPECIALISTS Indy Duct Specialists is run by longtime best friends, Justin Bauserman and Nick Winn, specializing in duct sealing. Most homeowners don’t think about how efficient their HVAC system is – only that it succeeds in blowing out hot air in the winter and cold air in the summer. Justin and Nick at Indy Ducts ensure that in-home HVAC systems are running at maximum capacity to help you save energy, and in turn, help you save money on your utility bills. Whether in basements, crawlspaces or attics, Justin and Nick’s duct sealing goes beyond what the builder of the home did in installing the HVAC system. Duct sealing helps to make sure the air that the HVAC system projects is not only clean, but not breaking the bank either. RICHARD PHILLIPY RETIRES AFTER 38 YEARS IN TEACHING
Old Oakland Golf Club hosted the retirement party for long-time Lawrence Central High School teacher Richard Phillipy. Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies
Lawrence Central High School teacher Richard Phillipy spent 30 years inspiring his students to make books, poetry and art come to life, seeking to engage students in understanding the author’s voice so that they could begin to understand their own. After 38 years of teaching, hundreds gathered at Old Oaken Clubhouse to celebrate his accomplishments and likely mourn his retirement on August 12. While much can be written about the facts of his career, the truth is so much more could be written about the impact he had on his students and why so many students made it their goal to have his class at some point in their career at LCHS. He cared as much about his students personally as he did their grasping the greatest works of Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson. Phillipy demonstrated this by understanding what mattered in his student’s world by attending their sporting events, band and choir concerts and theatre productions. “He is passionate and intelligent, but he really cares about you. ST. GEORGE FESTIVAL OFFERS MIDDLE EASTERN FOOD AND DANCE Writer / David E. Summer
Samantha Saba coordinates the children’s dance performances at the St. George Festival held September 16-17 at the church on 116th Street in Fishers. Samantha, whose parents are Palestinian Christian immigrants, says she is teaching the girls to dance to Middle Eastern songs. The group includes about a dozen girls ranging in age from 3 to 12. “I have always loved kids,” she says. “You can have the worst day possible, but kids can change your whole perspective. They warm my heart.” Besides teaching Sunday School and advising the St. George teenagers, Samantha coaches a YMCA children’s basketball team. She grew up in Indianapolis and graduated from IUPUI. Food, always the main attraction at the St. George Festival, will include separate booths selling lamb shanks, falafel, grape leaves, gyros, vegetarian plates and honey balls as well as a bake shop with Middle Eastern pastries. Entertainment includes live music and a children’s carnival with bounce houses and a zip line. A silent auction with gifts from local merchants is always a highlight. Last year’s attendance was estimated at 7,000. Fr. Nabil Hanna, pastor, says, “Our festival historically offers a sense of intimacy, and guests see us as a family. This is our home, and we are trying to share a little about ourselves, our faith and our background. It presents our heritage of faith, hospitality, good food, music and crafts from our roots in the Holy Land, the Middle East and the cultures that make up our congregation.” He says it originated as the Middle Eastern Festival in 1995 and was renamed the “St. George Festival” in 2014 after the church moved from its old location on Sherman Drive. Founded by Middle Eastern immigrants, the diverse congregation now includes a large number of Protestant converts and families with backgrounds from more than 15 countries. Susie Baranyk also grew up at St. George Orthodox Church, which her grandparents, who were Syrian Christian immigrants, helped found in 1926. Susie coordinates several volunteer greeters who ride the shuttle buses with guests from the off-site parking lot at Lutheran Journey Ministries about a half-mile away on 116th Street. “We talk about the festival, the various food booths, the entertainment and what to expect. We tell them about the church tours, which explain the unique architecture and the iconography. We tell them how much we appreciate their taking the time to visit our festival,” says Susie. “I hope our guests will leave appreciating the artistic beauty of the church and learning a little about our faith.”

Grant Nesbit, Director of Athletes and Wellness
NORTH VS. CENTRAL LAWRENCE NORTH VS. LAWRENCE CENTRAL SHOWDOWN SET AT LUCAS OIL
Writer / Ray Compton
If your zip code is 46236, 46256 or another five digit number in Lawrence, you realize what the biggest game in the community is every football season. The match doesn’t pair the Colts against the Patriots. Or the contest between Hoosiers and Boilermakers. The giant every year is the friendly and sometimes unfriendly rivalry between neighborhood foes Lawrence Central and Lawrence North. This annual argument on turf features a shortage in seats; unwieldly concession lines; and traffic headaches on Hague and 56th Street before and after the feud. No one understands the holiness of the Battle for Lawrence better than Grant Nesbit, former athletic director at Lawrence North who shifted over to the district’s Director of Athletes and Wellness two years ago. Let’s flip back the pages to last September on the Friday of the North-Central game at Lawrence North. Nesbit and his wife, Katie, were booked at Community Health North, awaiting birth of their first child. “I had to somehow see the game,” remembered Nesbit. “But I also had to be with Katie. So, I was able to talk the hospital into giving us a room on the east side of the hospital. The room faced the football field. I could watch the game and hear the announcer.” Eventually, little Wyatt Nesbit was born. Meanwhile, Lawrence Central won the football game. Now, comes this season’s bout and Grant Nesbit has hatched his enormous dream. Not only has he moved the Bears and Wildcats game to Lucas Oil Stadium, but September 2 has evolved into Lawrence Night at Lucas Oil Stadium. This is the first time the home of the Colts is being used exclusively by one district’s football teams and not a multi-school event. There are no Panthers or Tigers, but, oh my, only Bears and Wildcats.
“I want this to be our biggest game ever,” said Nesbit. “The very biggest.” And to make it the biggest football game involving Lawrence teams, Nesbit and his partners at North, Central, Belzer Middle School and Fall Creek Valley Middle School are pulling out all of the bells and whistles. Some of the night’s features include: • Youth football games involving the Lawrence Youth Football League, starting at 5:15 p.m. • A contest between Belzer and Fall Creek Valley, beginning at 6:30 p.m. • And the prime-time headliner, the bash between Lawrence Central and Lawrence North that will launch at 8 p.m. Both teams have huge hopes as they enter the 2016 season. But move over Bill Veeck, the legendary owner and promoter who harvested some of the most entertaining events in the history of baseball. Nesbit will not have pigs dancing on the football field, but his entertainment card includes an 85-person choir from Belzer singing the National Anthem and the 300-member Marching Pride Band performing in pre-game tailgate activities and at halftime of the CentralNorth game. The night will also include fundraising opportunities for the band and its upcoming trip to the Rose Bowl Parade.
“Again, we want this to be the biggest event in school history,” Nesbit said. “Why do you always want to do things the same way every year? Let’s try something bigger.” Nesbit has been thinking outside the walls since moving to the administrative offices on Sunnyside Road. He regularly meets with his athletic directors ( Jeff Irwin at Central, Mike Penrose at North, Mike Connors at Belzer and Brad Phelps at Fall Creek Valley), collectively focusing on the financial and competitive needs for the district. And Nesbit expanded his approach to the district’s athletics last season when he worked directly with the 11 elementary schools and expanded the basketball programs at the schools beyond the seventh and eighth grades. Each school added sixth grade boys and girls basketball teams. The campaign included a post-season tournament and sellout crowds at the hosting schools. “It was great,” Nesbit noted. “Our superintendent (Shawn Smith) understands the importance of athletics to education and supports these kinds of efforts. We want to work with the community and connect athletics to the community.”
Nesbit comes from an academic family. His parents were teachers in the Warren Central Nesbit and his marketing partners snared district and Nesbit followed his father’s Ed Martin Automotive Group and Financial footsteps into wrestling. (He strongly denies that he jumped off the top ropes with a Center Federal Credit Union as presenting mask on.) After earning his undergraduate sponsors. If all the cards fall correctly, degree at Ball State and Master’s at Butler, Lawrence Night at Lucas Oil Stadium will score a financial touchdown for the district. Nesbit went for the academic cycle by atGeist.com / SEPTEMBER 2016 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 31
earning his Specialist’s and Doctoral degrees at Ball State. After serving as an assistant athletic director at Greenfield Central, Nesbit came to Lawrence North as an assistant athletic director. In 2001, he became the youngest athletic director in the state at 27, succeeding Scott Weise.
SEPTEMBER 2, LUCAS OIL STADIUM
During his 14 years at Lawrence North, the Wildcats won 10 IHSAA state championships. Nesbit also oversaw several improvements to the physical facilities. And with the assistance of Jim Inskeep, Nesbit was instrumental in the growth of the powerful Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference (MIC), undoubtedly the strongest conference in the state.
®
“It’s hard to imagine a state championship game of any kind without a MIC team in it,” said Nesbit.
A Little bit
He also is adamant that the Lawrence teams will continue to be threats in the conference and state. Both Central and North are undergoing major football stadium renovations in the upcoming months and each department will be fueled by naming rights and other revenue insertions. Both schools will have again have sturdy basketball teams this winter.

Bob Nichols was a visionary who knew that in America, dreams can come true if you work hard and never give up! When he got out of the Marine Corps in 1958, he had no car, no money and some would say no future. What he did have was a dream of being successful, and the willpower to make it happen. He borrowed ten dollars from his mother and with the help of Orville “Ducky” Love, an Indianapolis car dealer who sold him a car, a Curtis key machine, some key code books, and keys on credit, he was in business. Mr. Love asked him to cut 18 keys at a dollar each and became his first customer. Bob wentup and down Virginia Avenue cutting keys and repairing locks all day long. His most frequent customer was Ed Clark, who was known as the used car king of east Washington Street. Mr. Clark would call Bob every morning and then he’d call him back all day long. Finally, Bob said “Ed, I’m coming back so much all day long, I’m losing money.” Clark replied, “You should charge me a service call charge when you come to cover your costs of making a trip. How about you charge me a $3.50 trip charge?” With that, Bob was on his way. Bob’s
TEN DOLLARS AND A DREAM B
son Mike started working for the company when he was 12, cutting keys and delivering them on his motorbike. Bob’s business grew so much that he opened his first shop on Shelby Street. Business really took off and his customers were impressed with his knowledge of locksmithing and safe repair. As the business grew, he and his son ran service all over the city and surrounding areas. Bob adopted his slogan “Don’t get robbed, call Bob!” and the company still uses it to this day. Bob and Mr. Maurice Bornman, who owned Bornman Safe and Lock, were instrumental in forming the first locksmith association in Indiana, the Associated Locksmiths of Greater Indiana, ALOGI. Mr. Bornman was the first vice president and Bob was the first president from 1972 to 1974. After a series of moves to larger and larger locations, Bob and Mike later opened a shop at 5631 Madison Avenue in 1981. The store featured a vehicle bay, a warehouse, and two safe showrooms. Bob later left the lock shop in the capable hands of Mike while he moved to Sevierville, Tennessee. When he got to Sevierville, he started the Golden Carat jewelry store and Nichols Properties and INDY METRO / SEPTEMBER 2016 / TownePost.com
became a successful real estate developer. His first love was always the lock shop. In 2013 Bob learned that he had cancer. Mike came to visit and later died unexpectedly in July of 2013. Bob came back to Indianapolis to attend his funeral. Bob died three months later. The business was closed for several months and many thought that the dream had died with the passing of Bob and his son Mike. Bob Nichols
Tim Young, Bob’s youngest son (who had worked in the business as a teenager) purchased the business in 2013, buying a new location at 5651 Madison Avenue (two doors down from the one that Bob and Mike built) and opening a second location in Fishers at 8240 E. 96th Street, in front of the Walmart. Tim has expanded the staff to 10 and has introduced many technological innovations into the business, such as GPS dispatching of service vehicles, as well as adding additional capabilities to the company’s product and service offerings, such as access control products. For 58 years Bob’s Master Safe and Lock Service has provided the best security hardware and services for homes and businesses at a great price. Each location offers many types of safes, and the company’s website offers an online safe store where customers can get free shipping on safes. Safe combination changing and safe opening are also offered.
In a world of change, our focus is steadfast.
The company is also proud to offer restricted key systems from Abloy, DOM and Medeco….with these patent protected systems, only Bob’s can cut the key, and only the customer can authorize the key to be made, saving the customer the expense of rekeying locks when employees are terminated or keys loaned out. The company can make the transponder chip and laser cut keys that are on the new cars, as well as make keys by VIN for most vehicles at both locations. The company also sells and services designer door hardware from EMTEK in both stores. And of course, they still offer rekeying and key duplication services both in their stores and in their trucks. Tim’s goal is to continue Bob’s vision of treating customers as family and providing the best possible products and services at the best prices, keeping Bob’s dream a reality for generations to come!

AT&T PRESIDENT
BILL SOARDS
ON INNOVATION
Entering the office of Indiana’s President of AT&T is a step back in time to the days of Mad Men. The woodwork and furnishings are of a different era. Yet regardless of the resurgence in popularity of mid-century furniture and design aesthetic, the offices are being updated to reflect a change in the times.
who owned a vending machine company and four retail stores, but is best known for serving twenty years as a state legislator. There’s no doubt the influence his father had on Bill’s own civic engagement and career mindset. At the age of twenty-three, Bill was elected and served for four years on the Indianapolis City County Council. After moving to Zionsville with his wife and daughters, he served for an additional five years on the Boone County Council.
As President of AT&T, Bill Soards brings a unique element of youth and energy to his position. Progressive and forward thinking, his leadership comes at a critical time. While all of his predecessors have looked toward the horizon, Soards embraces change like no one before him.
Perhaps the influence of staying current and ahead of trends is what drives him, yet this is someone who is not afraid to take risks. With the dynamics of technological evolution, AT&T is keeping up by supporting tech startup communities to foster STEM.
The remodeling efforts in the building reflect the evolving culture of a company as it strives to stay ahead of the technology of tomorrow. While Bill appreciates the nostalgia and history of his office, he welcomes change.
One way is through sponsorship of Eleven Fifty Academy’s classrooms located inside Launch Fishers. With demand for careers in the technology field, cultivating these students now is critical to Indiana’s tomorrow. “Innovation drives what we do,” says Soards. “A shift in innovation creates change and with the pace of technology, this is a constant. Supporting Eleven Fifty Academy is a natural partnership for us.”
Writer / Kara Reibel Photographer / Brian Brosmer
Bill grew up on Indy’s north side and graduated from North Central High School and then studied at Butler University where he majored in political science and telecommunications. He’s fortunate to have known at a young age where his interests lie, and not only majored in them, is living them daily. Bill’s father was an entrepreneur
“The need for a skilled tech workforce cannot be overstated,” says John Qualls, President of Eleven Fifty Academy. “We are grateful that AT&T shares our vision, for it’s TownePost.com / SEPTEMBER 2016 / INDY METRO
partnerships such as theirs that will enable us to skill up Hoosiers to meet the demand for jobs in this field, which is increasing exponentially.” The AT&T Engagement Center inside of Launch Fishers also includes an AT&T space for product demos and prominent advertising to their members. Bill refers to the partnership with Launch Fishers as “an experiment”, which is fitting since experiments are what lead to innovation. ”A presence inside of Launch Fishers is equally beneficial for internal as well as external reasons. We are a global, integrated communications company providing wireless and broadband access but our industry is changing rapidly,” states Bill. “We are creating innovation internally and we want our employees to be a part of the innovative community as a whole.” “AT&T has been an awesome partner with Launch Fishers. From conducting hackathons with our community, to their support of our Launch Fishers High School Fellowship, they have proven their interest in helping our innovation economy continue to grow and thrive!” says John Wechsler, Founder of Launch Fishers. AT&T was once a startup. Alexander Graham Bell was inspired by his mother. In spite of the fact that she was deaf, she
became an accomplished pianist, inspiring young Alexander to take on great challenges throughout his life. The Bell Telephone Company filed for corporate status in July of 1877, 139 years ago. Alexander Graham Bell was an early entrepreneur whose love of invention started a company that is today the world’s largest global communications company. Bill Soards is technically President of Indiana Bell.
“Communications is continually disrupted - by devices, technologies - we are moving faster, smarter, trying newly innovated projects and ideas, and while I appreciate the nostalgia of the history of our company and industry, it is entirely based on change. That’s why we support new initiatives like Eleven Fifty Academy and Launch Fishers,” says Bill.

AT&T Brand Ambassador, Vanessa Cretsinger, works a few days a week inside of Launch Fishers where she coordinates vendor events and networks with members of Launch Fishers. “By learning about community entrepreneurs, we can explore what AT&T can do to help their businesses grow,” shares Vanessa. “When you align with a vision of technology and entrepreneurial innovation, good things happen,” says Bill, who is open to the happy coincidences of unintended results. Inspired by Launch Fishers, AT&T created their own co-working space for their employees. AT&T has owned the 220 Meridian location since 1907. “Having been with the company for over sixteen years, it means something to be back in your home town doing something special,” says Bill, who has moved around the country with AT&T, recently living in Denver before moving back to his home state.

"This isn't an AT&T store,” says Vanessa of working inside of Launch Fishers. The AT&T corporate-owned retail stores are known internally as CORE. “The intention is for Launch members to discover what AT&T does and for us to discover what they do and how we can work together,”

“Denver is a great city. We spent four and a half years there, but it’s made it even better to be home,” says Bill. “We can't be Austin, Boston, Denver - we need to be authentic to Indy.” Bill insists that every co-working space needs it’s own brand of authenticity, true to its local roots.

in case you receive the invitation to return. The Alex, Jeffrey and Wilson Trio suggests going as far as having a third number ready. The trio did an exceptional job with the song, “Mary, Did You Know?” for their first audition. When they received the callback, the trio performed a fun number called “Santa Buddies,” a twist off the rendition of “Santa Babies.” With the final auditions complete, the judges announced the winners. The trio had indeed claimed a spot in the grand finale. Why the suggestion for a third number? ”We, as a bunch of teenagers, didn’t want to upstage Sandy Patti’s version of ‘Mary, Did You Know?’” said baritone Alex Milligan, supporting a mischievous smile. “We were all told to use familiar holiday songs for our stage performances. While ‘Santa Buddies’ was an exhilarating number, it wasn’t a familiar holiday song. We ended up singing, ‘The Christmas Song.’” Whether planning two songs or three, audition rules highly advise against singing a capella. Instead, performers bring a CD or an accompanist to the auditions. (A keyboard will be available for auditions.) How do performers choose between the two options? According to the 2015 gospel group Zions Joy!, they keep in mind factors such as the style of the song, the amount of pre-audition practice time and the feel you want to portray to your audience. Zions Joy! President Kay Insley clarified by saying, “If you're singing a big, uptempo song and don't have a full band backing you, it's probably best to sing with a CD. If an accompanist comes to every practice, live music is always a plus.” In closing, Insley humbly said, “The bottom line is that you should feel incredibly comfortable with your musical selection before your audition. You want to walk in feeling confident, prepared and ready to have fun. Whether or not you make it to the big stage, you are gaining experience and memories that will last a lifetime.”
THE ESCAPE ROOM OPENING A NEW LOCATION IN FISHERS THIS FALL
When The Escape Room Fishers opens this fall in The Edge building at 8890 E. 116th St., guests can expect five totally new interactive escape room experiences.
"The lounge will have a secret entrance that will look similar to an old-fashioned speakeasy door," Harbron said. "I think people are going to love it. It will have five brand new themed and unique escape rooms."
Brendon Harbron, co-owner and Chief Game Designer for The Escape Room, said the entrance of the new place will look similar to a shop or library.
They will include two Race Rooms, a Titanic Room, a 1776 Room, a World War II Prisoner of War Camp Room and a Castle Room.

The Escape Room Fishers will have several surprises to enhance the escape room experience, and there will be the continued attention to detail with history added in. The owners state, “Attention to detail is important. If we can bring history to life through this interactive experience, we have created even more of a one-of-a-kind place to build relationships and learn along the way. We want people to feel as if they are really in 1776 or on the Titanic. Creating a place to do this in a fun atmosphere with family, friends and coworkers is our goal." Co-owner and Charitable Giving Coordinator Daniel P. Chillemi said, "We have created an experience that is a unique entertainment alternative. Nothing like this existed in Indiana when we started The Escape Room Indianapolis." Chillemi is looking forward to The Escape Room at The Edge, which will feature a vintage race and restoration shop as one of the rooms people have to escape from. "People are going to have to race against the clock and each other to get out," he stated. "I think the Fishers location is an ideal spot for the new Escape Room. We studied different locations, and Fishers matched up perfectly with what we wanted. We want to bring the fun and unique experience of our downtown location to Fishers." A TASTE OF MEXICO
SAMANO’S TAQUERIA BRINGS AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD TO FISHERS
Writer / Demi Lawrence
Hamilton Town Center is full of restaurants of all different shapes, sizes and styles. Even then, Samano’s Taqueria sticks out as one of the most unique in the area. Opening shop this past March, Mexico City native and owner Adrian wanted to bring a different kind of Mexican food to Fishers.
and everyone likes it. It’s fresh,” Adrian explained. “The reason I didn’t want to do a lot of marketing for the restaurant is because if I have a line out the door, it’s going to be slow because we make everything on spot.” Aside from burritos, Samano’s offers tortas (sandwiches), gringas (quesadillas) and a variety of Mexican desserts. It’s fresh, simple and delicious. They also have vegetarian options and a kids’ menu, making it any Mexican food lover’s hotspot.
“Not many places sell tacos around here, and if you want a good taco, you have to drive pretty far for it,” Adrian said. “Everyone loves Mexican food, so I wanted to open a restaurant with more authentic “It’s a place that I hope everyone will enjoy and come back to. This food. If I’m going to make something, I’m going to make it right.” has been a dream of mine, having my own restaurant. I didn’t think it’d ever go through, but that was the goal,” Adrian said. Samano’s features a variety of different tacos and burritos with Adrian’s Burrito easily being the best-selling. This heaping dish Working for many restaurants in the past, like McAlister’s and City offers a bacon-wrapped flour tortilla with your choice of chicken or Barbeque, he finally tired of working for someone else, and that’s steak, then avocado, chipotle dressing, green peppers, rice, beans when he decided to open Samano’s. “I’m working hard with a lot of and cheese. long hours, but I hope that it all pays off soon.” Adrian’s Burrito was made when Adrian was just messing around with some dish options, and when this unique burrito got extensive social media attention, Samano’s decided to add it to the menu. Needless to say, it could easily feed two people and then some.
Samano’s is located just off Campus Parkway on Bergen Boulevard, attached to the Shell gas station. Visit samanosmexicanfood.com to see their menu.
“Everything I make is by order, and I think that’s why it’s so good
If you love authentic Mexican food, specifically tacos and burritos, Samano’s will definitely not disappoint you.

BOOMBOZZ PIZZA TAPHOUSE'S WORLD CHAMPION PIZZA
9887 E. 116TH ST., FISHERS, IN 46037 | (317) 577-2699 | BOOMBOZZ.COM Writer / Matt Keating
BoomBozz Pizza in Fishers was attracting positive attention before it even opened on August 9. Brian Hall, the enthusiastic operating partner of BoomBozz Pizza Taphouse, also started the Carmel location in 2010 and believes the success of the Carmel spot helped ensure customers at the Fishers restaurant. "We didn't run an advertisement or have a website up, and we had a 45-minute wait on our first night," Hall said. He adheres to a recipe of success that helped him over the last several years. "I keep things real simple," Hall said during a tour of the kitchen. "We use fresh ingredients and hand cut and slice everything. We cook the meats from scratch. We marinate the chicken. We come in at 7 a.m. every day and get busy. The majority of items are fresh and never frozen. We work hard to make people good food." Attention to detail has paid off for Hall. He recently won the 2016 World Pizza Championship at The International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas.
"You go through different divisions, and we won each round," he explained. "I liked the non-traditional category, which means there are no rules. I love that, and it enabled us to win the title." He has won the 2016 World Pizza Championship twice and The American Pizza Championship twice. "I love doing things in a unique and fun way, and that has also helped me with BoomBozz." The name BoomBozz comes from Italian slang and means wild, crazy and fun. Hall, a former casino manager in Las Vegas and Indiana, said he has a passion for food. "I stress unique flavors with our Mediterranean and Fajita pizzas." Hall added that he also provides a good value at BoomBozz. "We give you a gourmet experience for less than $20, Hall said. “I tell people to bring the kids and spend less than $50." BoomBozz also offers $5 and $6 Social Hour values. The $5 Social Plates include BoomBozz's Famous Asiago Bread, Goat Cheese 50 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2016 / atGeist.com
Marinara, Soft Pretzels, Hummus, Stuffed Portobello, Loaded Potato Nachos, Toasted Ravioli and Bruschetta. The $6 Social Plate includes House Made "MeatBozz," Award Winning Wings and Southern Fried Boneless Bites. Daily drink specials are featured every Sunday through Thursday. "On Tuesdays, we feature a Craft beer for $2," Hall said. Beers on tap include a BoomBrew Collaboration Rotator, a Local Rotator, a Three Floyds Rotator, a Daredevil Lift Off, West Coast IPA, a Fountain Square Backyard Porter, a Tin Man Damascene, Apricot Sour, a Tin Man Rivet, Irish Red and a host of dozens of other drinks. "I go to other cities to keep up-to-date on current trends," Hall stated. "I'll go to New York City or Washington, D.C., to experience new flavors and bring that flavor back here."

REDS, WHITES & BREWS GALA SUPPORTING THE HISTORIC CHRISTAMORE HOUSE
Christamore House Guild members: Paige Button (Vice President and New Member Chair), Kim Troyer (Gala Chair), Angela Ostrowski (Past President), Jennifer Mitchell (President)
Writer / Kara Kavensky
On October 8 at Meridian Hills Country Club, the Christamore House Guild will celebrate Reds, Whites & Brews, an event to support the Christamore House. Guild member and Event Chair Kim Troyer is leading the fundraising efforts. The Christamore House Community Center has served the near westside Haughville community for over 111 years. In 1905, Butler University students Anna Stover and Edith Surbey opened
Christamore House with the motto, “Improvement is the aim, friendship the principle.” Beginning with kindergarten, youth clubs, medical care for infants and home economics classes encompassed the early curriculum.
of women working together as a team to enhance the lives of children, families and senior citizens in the Haughville area,” shares Kim. “Working in this organization, you really feel like you're making a difference in people’s lives.”
In order to support the efforts of the Christamore House, the Christamore Aid Society, now known as the Christamore House Guild, was formed in 1908.
Today, the Christamore House includes an Early Childhood Education Program, After School Program, summer camps and a Senior Program. The Christamore House Boxing Club, which began in 1955, is still run out of the Christamore House and is an independent nonprofit.
“I love being a part at the Christamore House Guild because it's a great group 54 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2016 / atGeist.com
“It’s all about the kids,” says Guild President Jennifer Mitchell. “The programming at the Christamore House is strong, providing children the early education they need to springboard into learning. The success of their alumni is a testament to the quality of programming. “I have been involved with the CHG for five years. I decided to join the Christamore House Guild because I believe in the mission, and I like seeing how we make a difference in the lives of the wonderful families in the Haughville neighborhood!”
• By 1913, the Christamore House was serving 4000 participants a month.
Earlier this year, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett presented his first State of the City address from the Christamore House auditorium.
• I n 1951, Christamore House was one of the first community centers to announce that they “served all” regardless of age, race, creed or color. A year later, the number of residents using services at Christamore House grew to 5,000.
“We selected Christamore House because of its long-standing quality service to the residents of the westside of our great City,” shares Mayor Hogsett. “In so many ways, it has been a place of transformation for our children, our youth and adolescents and their parents. By delivering that State of the City there, I hope we sent a message to the people of Haughville and throughout the rest of Indianapolis about how important the quality of life is to all ‘neighborhoods.’”
•T he Police Athletic League runs a boxing program out of the Christamore House. In 1989, Bill Brown coached Lamon Brewster to a State Junior Olympic Boxing title.
In 1985, Christamore House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Broad community support keeps the Christamore House operational, serving a deserving community. “We are so grateful for the generous donations to the Guild, which enables us to support the Christamore House,” says Kim. “Our Guild is all volunteer, and we are always welcoming new members.” Visit ChristamoreGuild.org to learn more about membership or how to donate.

(Harry) Douglas what I would try to be as a senator, except for the philandering part,” said Marra, a standout at several local theaters. “I want to portray the senator as a well-intentioned politician but who is cursed with an overactive ego and libido.” And actress Sherry Compton, who plays the wife and subsequent victim of Douglas’ skirtchasing scandal, vows that she is also not impersonating past or current members of the wives’ club of Washington politicians. “I’m really not trying to take after anyone in particular,” said Compton, who has performed in “Lend Me a Tenor” and other Mud Creek Players performances. “I am focusing on the qualities of Lois as a loyal and naïve wife.” Thus, if you check out “The Sensuous Senator” this month at the Mud Creek Barn, there will be missing elements such as impersonators trying to copy Bill Clinton, John Kennedy and Gary Hart who strayed frequently from their Washington bedrooms. But not absent from the night will be the belly laughs as spectators witness a hoard of politicians and their wandering moments in this wildly entertaining two-hour comedy from author Michael Parker (“Sex Please, We’re 60”). Parker hatched the play in 1998 during the Clinton years in the White House. Reviewers have praised the script, noting
audiences “barely had time to catch a breath between laughs.” The story revolves around Douglas who has decided to run for President on a “morality” platform. But when wife Lois leaves to attend a conference in Chicago, Douglas moves quickly in inviting his secretary and secret lover Veronica (Stephanie Cole) over to his home. But after being unable to connect with Veronica, the sex-starved Douglas calls an escort service and books a voluptuous lassie named Fiona (Nicole Bridgens of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” fame). Chaos breaks out when two other Congressmen (played by longtime character actor and director Paul B. Haskin and rising star Justin Lyon of Tom Jones) unexpectedly arrive and add confusion to Douglas’ sexual playground. Added to the storyline are a reporter (Margie atGeist.com / SEPTEMBER 2016 / GEIST MAGAZINE / 59
Worrell) from the popular grocery store newspaper (the National Intruder) and a challenged law enforcement member (Tom Riddle). As the play roars into the second act with the return of Lois from her aborted trip to Chicago, the senator’s bedroom features scantily clad women and red-handed and redfaced politicians. This one may not be for young children. “It is a rollicking bedroom farce,” reported the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel. And a newspaper in Midland, Texas, jumped in with both feet, hailing the show with “two thumbs up … the funniest stage play in recent memory.” So, the locals will have big shoes to fill. This assignment falls to Arlene Haskin who has acted in over 60 plays but sits in the director’s
chair for the first time. “It’s different being on that side of the stage,” she confessed.
“She knows what she is doing,” said Bridgens. “She has been a great teacher.”
The Haskins lassoed the rights to “The Sensuous Senator” and sold the idea to the Drama Committee at the Barn. There was no accident that the pitch came in 2016.
Meanwhile, the wandering senator is played by Marra, a real life 69-year-old financial planner whose graceful strands of gray hair adds to his character. He, too, admits that the timing of action in the bedroom and elsewhere will be critical in earning crowd approval.
“It’s an election year, and it seemed very timely,” the director said. “We think people need a break from this year’s election and a chance to laugh. They can expect a good time.”
“The timing of the gags has to be spot on,” Marra conceded. “There are so many (gags) that getting blocked out and rehearsed thoroughly will be critical to the success of the show.”
And the audience will need to expect order to Though there are no parts for the Three Stooges or Marx Brothers, there are frantic the actions on the stage. and almost slapstick highlights in “The Sensuous Senator.” “Timing is critical,” admitted Arlene. “When someone goes up the steps, another person has to come down the steps. When someone exits “The last scene is really cute and funny,” assessed Marra. “You have to stay to the end.” the stage, another person enters the stage.” “Timing is everything when you do a farce,” said the 29-year-old Bridgens, a native of Beech Grove who turned to acting and dancing after suffering two broken wrists from a fall as a cheerleader as a youngster. Parker is not afraid to tackle salacious double meanings of words and dropping in tasty lines involving sexual content. “There is a lot of sexual innuendo, and it is very sexy at times,” said Bridgens, who acknowledges that she is “a touchy, feely person, so I love my character.” Bridgens also lauds the work of Haskin.
And Arlene Haskin believes that Marra will earn laughs and praise from the audience. “He reminds me some of Gary Hart (former senator of Colorado whose presidential campaign was derailed when he spotted on a boat named Monkey Business with his girlfriend, Donna Rice),” said Haskin. “Ronan is perfect for this role. He looks like he could be a president.” Meanwhile, newcomer Cole fulfills the need for a sexy secretary to Douglas. “She’s very sexy, and she’s madly in love with Harry,” Haskin said. “She can’t type, but she

can do other things well.” And there’s more hijinks. One scene features older congressman (Salt) coaching young congressman (Maguire) some tricks of the trade. Compton’s portrayal of Lois brings a note of seriousness, though she receives the imaginary pie to the face when she unexpectedly wanders into her husband’s second workplace. “Harry’s sensuous weekend turns into his great personal and political nightmare,” Compton remarked. Missing from the play will be persons named Clinton, Trump and Blitzer. We think. Ray Compton is a former journalist and longtime sports marketing person.

There’s a lot of wedding advice floating around the Internet. But the real question is how do you choose the right advice? How do you plan this crazy monumental party while enjoying the fun of getting married? Sure, there are a lot of useful tools online, but chances are you’re going to be using multiple websites and different vendors, and family and friends are going to have their opinions along the way. It can get confusing and stressful. How do new couples organize? That is what Cristina Goebel and her husband, Matt, were questioning when they first got engaged. Excited to plan, they quickly got frustrated with how complicated everything was that goes into planning a wedding. “Most people have never planned a wedding before, so Matt was thinking there’s got to be something out there that can bring everything together.” And that is how PlanTheDay.com was born. Cristina and Matt, the founders of Plan The Day, created a collaborative planning tool that helps new couples plan their weddings. This tool makes everything easier by bringing everyone involved in the wedding into a centralized platform. Cristina explained that unlike other websites where each one has a specific purpose, Plan The Day brings it all to one space. Photographers, food vendors and family members can all be invited in, so everyone can see the details you choose to share. Less confusion, more collaboration. So they had an idea, got married and started researching soon after. “We knew we had something good when Matt showed people what he created,” Cristina explained. Plan The Day first existed on a big Excel sheet, and they showed wedding professionals what they had 64 / GEIST MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2016 / atGeist.com
