Girls About ToWn Follow us to see where we’re @ - Rachel Q. & Chalene B. -

Saddle Up Saloon & Dancehall “Take two parts COUNTRY, one part ROCK and ROLL, add a splash of SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY, mix and serve … and you’ve got SADDLE UP!” We couldn’t resist checking out this new hot spot that we’d been hearing about recently, located in the strip mall on the corner of 82nd Street & Center Run Drive in Castleton. Lets just say if you don’t have fun at this place, then you just don’t wanna have fun!

On the night our posse rode in, there were all types of people there. We were there for our neighborhood Girls Night Out and, actually, there were a couple other GNO groups there that night. The place was packed! Everyone seemed to really enjoy the DJ’s choice of music! Early on, you’ll hear pretty much all country – everything from

For starters, this place is a legit honky tonk dancehall. It’s big, open, with a true country western look – just like you’d find in the heart of Texas. The three bars, pool tables, and huge dance floor underneath a mammoth Jack Daniel’s whiskey bottle chandelier are all capped off by a mechanical bull and the super cool Jack Daniel’s Whiskey Barrel Bar. And coming from someone who who hails from the Lone Star State, I have to say I was pretty impressed! Even though there’s not much two-stepping going on, the staff-led country line dancing is sure to get your country-fried boot scoot and boogie on! So listen y’all: get there early to get your dance steps down before you get your drink on!! april 2013 |

George Strait to Kenny Chesney. Then, just as you get your new line dance steps down, the DJ adds a twist and starts adding in some rock and roll – everything from AC/DC to Pink. There really is something for everyone here! The locals were super friendly! We were big fans of Gunner, the big cowboy bartender in a ten gallon hat behind the bar. Gunner takes pride in his specialty shots, many with names we can’t share in print! Ask him to mix you up something, and you won’t be disappointed. Nothing like a delicious concoction to get you in the boogie zone!! Suzy, the events organizer, served up a heaping portion of hospitality, as well.

If you’re the more adventurous type, mosey on over to the mechanical bull and do your best Deborah Winger imitation! The mechanical bull ride is sure to get you lots of fun Instagram photo ops. You’ll find the bull up front next to the Barrel Bar. Even if you’re not a “Cowboy Up” kinda person, can’t dance, or don’t usually listen to country music, you’re sure to ride the wave of fun here. So put on your dancing shoes (or boots) and Saddle Up! Maybe we’ll see you out there on the dance floor!

Our Saddle Up excursion turned into a Cambridge Ladies Night Out with (left to right) Cindy Orris, Chalene Braun, Tara Kerpsack, Lori Etheredge, Kim Troyer and Susan Spafford. 10

gaining confidence by

losing inches | By Beth Taylor As swimsuits gain prime retail space once again, thoughts turn to warmer weather. If you’ve kept your New Year’s resolution to work out but aren’t seeing the results you’d like, consider looking into the latest non-invasive targeted weight-reduction methods. The latest procedures make losing the love handles without pain possible. The SimplySkin Med Spa offers CoolSculpting, a revolutionary non-surgical body contouring treatment that delivers results. A certified CoolSculpting esthetician uses cooling plates to freeze and crystallize fat cells. Your body permanently eliminates the fat cells. “Clients can achieve a pants-size loss and are excited to get their closets back,” said Amanda Voss, office manager at SimplySkin Med Spa. Unlike surgical methods, CoolSculpting achieves results without pain or downtime. During the procedure, clients feel an initial cold sensation that soon dissipates. The ideal candidate for this procedure maintains a healthy weight but struggles with stubborn bulges that can’t be eliminated through diet and exercise. Most clients can expect to see results within a couple weeks. “Clients get a wow month about 2 months after the initial procedure,” Voss said. An on-staff doctor determines if a patient is a candidate for CoolSculpting.

In addition to CoolSculpting, the state-of-the-art Medical Spa provides Liposonix, another targeted fat-reduction treatment. This treatment option uses high-intensity ultrasound to heat and permanently destroy targeted fat cells. Skin and tissue are unharmed. Liposonix can be used on the love handles and waistline as well as on small or curved areas. “Liposonix is really energy sculpting,” said Dr. Marcus Jiminez. “We use it to target smaller areas, often working its use into an overall aesthetic treatment plan with other options.” Liposonix treatments cause minimal discomfort, and patients experience little to no downtime after the treatment. “We see excellent results with this procedure, and it usually takes only one time,” he said. Patients can expect to see a result 8 to 10 weeks after the Liposonix treatment, and the average reduction is around an inch (or pant size) from the waistline. Losing inches while gaining definition and strength has never been so easy. At 7e Fit Spa, the 7e Torc Treatment Abs sessions use a device that mimics the body’s natural bioelectricity to work out abdominal muscles more effectively than a traditional workout. “The device contracts the muscles on a cellular level — that’s why it’s so effective,” said CEO of 7e Fit Spa, Steve Nielsen. Clients can see results after the first 30-minute session, but 6 sessions are recommended

to achieve lasting results. Most clients don’t feel discomfort, and some say the procedure tickles. “You don’t experience soreness because the lactic acid doesn’t build up,” Nielsen said. For those trying to lose weight before warmer weather arrives, Seland Chiropractic Family Wellness Center offers the SkinnyUp program to help you see a daily weight loss of up to 2 pounds. The 23-day option is for those wanting to lose 10-15 pounds, while the 40-day option helps those who need to lose 25-35 pounds. Patients receive FDA-approved homeopathic drops and follow Dr. Simeons’ diet to achieve amazing results. “The SkinnyUp program works to reset your metabolism and serves to detox your body to help get your body functioning better,” said Laurie Seland.

She wants to empower people to take control of the number on the scale. Weekly support meetings provide strategies to help keep people on track.

The frustrating ups-and-downs of weight loss and weight gain associated with emotional eating are familiar to Seland. She has lost 70 pounds on the

| Tom Britt Now that the snow has melted (we hope for the final time this season), potholes are popping up everywhere around Geist Reservoir. Areas of Fall Creek Road, Fox Road, Oaklandon Road, and East 96th Street are extremely bad. Indianapolis and the Town of McCordsville plan on fixing these potholes beginning this month, but they need our help. Indianapolis residents can download an app on their iPhone (search “RequestIndy”) to report potholes, among other things, to the Department of Public Works. You can also go to an online “Pothole Viewer” that allows you to report and check the progress of pothole repairs. Just visit www.maps.indy. gov/IndyPotholeviewer/ and start logging those potholes.

For our Geist residents in Hancock County, namely McCordsville, they have an online action center on their website with a link to “Report a Pothole”. Visit www.mccordsville. org and click on Departments > Public Works > Online Service Requests.

n 1913 E.F. Marburger found himself seated at the lunch counter at a corner drugstore in downtown Indianapolis. The mid-day break from his job in the flooring department at Block’s Department Store would prove fateful in ways young Eli could not have imagined. The druggist, familiar with Eli’s line of work, asked him to measure out a new flooring project for the store. Ever resourceful, Eli rolled up his sleeves and started calculating.

The Girl Scout Bronze Award journey includes six steps: establish a team, explore your community, choose your project, make a plan, put it into motion, and spread the word. One January day, Olivia and Jolie were visiting City of Lawrence Fire Station 36 to complete a First Aid Badge. They formulated questions and personally interviewed the first responders. The girls had an interest in completing their project in an area that affected sick children. As they were touring the ambulance and learning about emergency care, Olivia recalled her experience at four years old when she had a seizure and had to be transported to Community Hospital North. She always remembered that she was less frightened because the Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) provided her with a stuffed animal that she could keep. The girls then asked Lieutenant Mark Fleming, if they still hand out these symbols of kindness. Unfortunately, he told her that they had not had any stuffed animals for a while because none had been donated. This prompted the girls to know exactly what they wanted to do for their community project. “I wanted to help sick kids because I baby sit a lot, and when kids are sick and crying, they want something to hug and hold to make them feel better,” said Olivia. “It makes me feel good to know I am helping out my community that I live in.”

Jolie (left) and Olivia (right) have been best friends since they were toddlers. They are happy to work on this Girl Scout project together.

Two Girl Scouts Earn Community Support and More | Janet C. Striebel Two Girl Scouts from the Lawrence Service Unit have set out to earn the Girl Scout Bronze Award — the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can achieve. These two young role models, Olivia Davis and Jolie Leonard, have witnessed amazing participation from Fire Station 36, Amy Beverland Elementary School, The Bridge Church, Classic Cleaners, and the public. Their project has entailed gathering donated stuffed animals so that children who ride in the ambulance will find comfort. “It makes me feel good because I know it will make kids happy,” says Junior Girl Scout Jolie Leonard. “This was a great experience, and I think this will make kids feel safe and less scared. I also had a lot of fun with this project.” 22

As part of the 20-hour task each girl needs to satisfy for her leadership journey, Olivia and Jolie have worked diligently. First, after getting approval from the Lawrence Township School District, the girls decorated boxes and made signs to collect new and gently-used stuffed animals at Amy Beverland Elementary where both girls attend as fifth-grade students. Also, they placed a box and sign at The Bridge Church in Fortville where they are members. Secondly, after boxes become full, with the help of their parents they take the animals to Classic Cleaners in the Geist Station Plaza. There, the animals are dry cleaned and individually packaged in plastic bags at no charge. “I am impressed,” says Lynn Aills, customer service representative at Classic Cleaners, who has corresponded with Olivia and Jolie since the beginning of their project. “I think this is a good idea for the little ones who are in a frightening situation. I am just amazed at how kids think of other kids.” Thirdly, they transport the animals from Classic Cleaners to Fire Station 36 (Oaklandon between 75th and 79th Streets) where they are given to children during their ride with paramedics. “These stuffed animals will be a great asset to our EMS services,” says Lieutenant Kris Kell from Station 36 City of Lawrence Fire Department. He continues, “I congratulate Olivia and Jolie for getting these donations and having them cleaned and bagged so we can distribute them. When times are tough, it’s the small things that make a difference.”

In addition, both Olivia and Jolie served as social media representatives as they advertised their project at school by writing the script and pre-recording it so that it could be televised on the Amy Beverland Elementary (ABE) TV internal network. They have also promoted their project to ABE bi-weekly newsletters, Facebook page, and listserv (electronic message system). So far, this mission has motivated a lot of people and the girls have collected hundreds of animals. In a couple months, Olivia and Jolie will inevitably receive the Girl Scout Bronze Award. Yet in actuality, they will have received so much more. They can feel proud knowing that their efforts helped bring their community closer; that is, their school, their church, a fire station, the cleaners, the Girl Scouts, and the public who all came together to fulfill a common purpose. They should feel special realizing that their leadership adventure will brighten the moments for many children. Furthermore, these two young ladies have courageously set a positive example for people of all ages to admire.

"Mr. T" fci science bowl champs | Kara Reibel Einstein. Newton. Darwin. TeGrotenhuis? His name may not be quite as famous as the aforementioned, but he is inspiring young minds nonetheless! Joshua TeGrotenhuis (pronounced teh-growten-house) is a popular 5th-grade science teacher at Fall Creek Intermediate School whose Science Bowl team has won the State Championship 3 years in a row! His secret: amazing kids! (And his passion for teaching science!) Mr. TeGrotenhuis’ students are certainly enthusiastic. Most of the kids who are on the team are current or former students of his. “Mr. T. makes science really fun!” says team member Nate Lytle. “Yeah, he is really cool!” responds another student, Rahil Thanawala. Mr. TeGrotenhuis holds tryouts for Science Bowl in mid October. This year, he witnessed a record-breaking 75-80 students who showed up to take the science exam to participate. He drew the cut line at 34 students. “That size of team is unusually large across the state, but I believe that it is important to give as many kids as possible the chance to be part of a team and to give them some extra science experiences! I’d have taken them all if that was manageable!” said Mr. TeGrotenhuis. The competition, put on by the Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP) and Purdue University, is held online for teams comprised of middle-school-aged students. There are three rounds of competition. The entire Science Bowl team competes in two of the rounds. The third and final round is limited to 4 26

students who take individual tests. All schools competing do so on the same day. The test results are then judged, compared, and posted online. The success of the FCI Science Bowl team is indicative not only of its students, but of the exemplary leadership of their teacher. Coming from a family of educators, TeGrotenhuis realized his calling to be a teacher was genetic. Science has always been a passion of his. When asked what he loves about his “job” – he prefers to call it his “passion” – the response was: “*every minute of it, *the hundreds of little/huge moments daily that I have made some sort of difference in a student’s life, *seeing my students be successful in whatever is important to them, *when a bunch of individual students become a group or team, *when I get the chance to support a student who may have made a mistake or had a loss, *when former students mention things to me that we did in class and I can’t remember, *when i can fully trust students to do the right thing, *when students go beyond my expectations because they want to, *my students inspire me, and inspire me to do more, *when my Science Bowl team will not accept second place…. it scares me too! *supportive parents who truly care about education, *a district that tries hard to equip me with everything I need, *colleagues who care as much as I do, *I could go on and on and on about what I love about teaching!” Since taking over as the Science Bowl coach, the first year the team came in 3rd place. The next three years, they have come in first place. The students have set an amazingly-high performance standard for themselves in years to come. With an educator like Mr. TeGrotenhuis leading them, nothing seems impossible. There may not be banners hung in the school to celebrate the Science Bowl team championships, like there are in the gymnasium for sports teams, but there should be!

Amy Beverland sixth grader Mikayla Stephens accepts the award from Michael Brown, Sertoma Club of Indiana - Northern District Governor, for winning the District's essay contest entitled "What Freedom Means to Me."

Amy Beverland Student Wins State Sertoma Club Award In November, 2012, all students in Mrs. Macalister’s sixth-grade class at Amy Beverland Elementary School (ABE) were asked to write an essay titled “What Freedom Means to Me.” This annual event, sponsored by the Sertoma Club of Indiana, asks fifthand sixth-grade students from participating schools all across Indiana to write an essay about Freedom. School officials select the best essays and submit them to their local Sertoma club which, in the case of ABE, is the Lawrence Sertoma Club. At the time, sitting in Mrs. Macalister’s class Mikayla Stephens had no idea how impactful this essay would be for her. She simply wrote the following from her heart:

What Freedom Means to Me

Freedom is a word that has different meanings to everyone. So what does freedom mean to me? Well, it is the describing word for our country. It’s the description to why I’m not a slave, why I can choose a religion, and why I have a choice every day. Freedom means so much to me. It means being able to have a choice. Without freedom in my life, everything would be different. I would be forced to wear clothes that I wouldn’t want to wear; I would wake up knowing that I don’t have a choice. Freedom 30

means being able to make my own decisions in life. Freedom is what has allowed me to choose what I am, what religion I am, and what choices I’m going to make. Freedom is something everybody takes for granted. We shouldn’t, though. At one point, in the United States slaves didn’t have the freedom they deserved. The slaves were like puppets that the American people could control. The slaves couldn’t vote, they didn’t have a choice on what they were going to do that day, and they couldn’t say what they wanted. But then President Lincoln came, and he gave them freedom with the 13th Amendment. They were grateful and had their freedom. They were free. Freedom has allowed me to have fun in life, to go to school, and to make a choice in life. I can watch a movie, or I don’t have to. I could hang out with my friends or I could hang out with my family, and it’s all my decision. Freedom also means that my choice is a choice only I can make. People can certainly influence me, but I am the one to make the ultimate decision. I can make my choices be heard, or I could keep them to myself. That’s a choice within a choice. Choices are within everyday life, and you may not even notice it. For

example, you chose to read this article, and I bet somebody influenced you; but, like I said, you made the ultimate decision to read this. Freedom is being able to have control of what I do. People can give me a command, but I decide on whether I follow their command or ignore it. I control who I am and what actions I take. I decide who is my friend, and nobody can stop that.

Sertoma Club of Indiana." Sertoma clubs from all across Indiana were represented at the banquet, as were the essay winners from each club. Each student who read his/her essay did an outstanding job and truly represented themselves and their schools at a remarkably high level. At the end of the night, Mikayla was thrilled beyond belief to hear her name called as the 1st place winner for the Northern District! She was presented with a beautifully-engraved plaque and another very generous check from the Sertoma Club of Indiana.

Freedom is also our perspective; it’s our point of view. I may view the world differently than you do; I view what people say different than you P r i v a t e do. And I can express how I view things to my friends and family without fear. Writers express their opinions through their books; companies express their feelings through their products; and people express their feelings through words and body language. Everybody has their own way of expressing their feelings, and that’s part of their freedom.

the Bank that’s Close to home.

Freedom is something most people take for granted. But outside of the United States, people don’t have the kind of freedom we do. Freedom is a choice, and we need to take that freedom and use it. People don’t realize how lucky they are to have freedom. Freedom is our choice and we need to use that freedom.

At the National Bank of Indianapolis, we’re proud to be the Indianapolis area’s largest locally owned national bank. Our private bankers, our directors, even our shareholders live and work in Greater Indianapolis. Decisions are made locally by people

Mikayla was honored to learn that her essay, among others, was selected by ABE school officials to be submitted to the Lawrence Sertoma Club for their consideration. To later learn that her essay was one of two finalists in Lawrence Township was amazing. Mikayla read her essay at a banquet sponsored by the Lawrence Sertoma Club on February 5, 2013. That night, she learned that her essay was selected as the 1st place winner. She received a very special plaque with her name engraved on it and a substantial check from the Lawrence Sertoma Club.

Mikayla said “I was surprised, but very happy to start preparing for February 23 when I would read my essay to the

The 18-hole golf course is a time-honored Bill Diddel design from

1924. It is extremely well manicured and features lightning-fast greens. Measuring 6,518 yards, the par 71 layout has always been a favorite of local golfers. The practice range is complemented by a large, separate complex for putting, chipping, and bunker practice. There is a full-service Pro Shop. When out on the course, golfers feel as if they are far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, even though the course winds its way through the beautiful Avalon Hills neighborhood located just west of 1-465 on Fall Creek Road and Shadeland Avenue. Club Membership Options include Golf, Junior Executive Golf, Corporate Golf, and Social (pool and clubhouse or dining and clubhouse). The club facilities are also available for tournaments as well as business, social, and civic events. J. Andy Murphy is a published author and works as a literary agent for regional writers. She serves as the Executive Director of the WriteStu Writers Conferences and Events.

Mom

of the

Vicky Andritsch Nominated by her husband Todd Vicky is a a mother of five children ranging from 18 to 6 years old. Other activities include being the Founder/ President of Team Luke Corp, a Board member of Vines For Life, founder of Triple Threat Indiana, member of New Hope Church in Fishers, Team In Training Participant and a committed runner/triathlete. She is a caring, loving mother and wife first and foremost who sets an example for her family and friends. Her kids are proud to call her Mom, and I am proud to call her my wife. Also nominated by Dean and Amy Hershman Vicky’s lovely. Her grace is modeled in how she interacts with her family and how they show love and compassion to each other. She knows the heart of a mother who’s child suffered and chooses to seek good in each experience. Vicky’s family formed Team Luke to bring hope to families fighting terminal illnesses. Whether delivering Rhythm Paks to Riley, counting pennies for patients at Geist Elementary, or volunteering in the community she puts the needs of others before herself. I can't summarize in 100 words other than to say - she is a gift to all who know her.

Michele Dowless My wife and I opened up a restaurant in Fortville back in May of 2011. She holds a full time job at Eli Lilly and works part time at our restaurant as the Pastry Chef and part time bookkeeper. We have three children ages 14, 12

and 10. Michele works tirelessly taking care of our children as well as all her other responsibilities. She sees our children off to school in the morning before driving to work and sometimes making pitstops to the Kroger for items needed at the restaurant. After work Michele stops and shops for the restaurant Mon-Fri at the restaurant depot. Putting all items on a flat cart by herself and loading them into her vehicle to deliver them to the restaurant. The items she gets from the RD are very big, bulky and heavy. 35# containers of fry oil, cases of tomatoes for sauce, 50# bags of flour and sugar and so on. She also takes our sons to boyscouts once a week. When our sons are playing Lacrosse she takes them to practice and waits for them to finish. She also takes our daughter to her horseback riding lesson twice a week and many more little things she does like keeping the house clean, laundry, making lunches, helping the kids with school projects as well homework. Not to mention keeping our chickens and dogs well feed and cared for. We also chop firewood for our fire place as well. Michele does all these things for our children, restaurant and myself and never, ever complains about how hard the work is or how tired she is. She never really does much for herslef because she is either to tired or she is simply sacrificing for someone else. She is truly an amzing woman and my hero! Forgive my jumping around. I'm at the restaurant and I wanted to write this quickly before we get busy. Thank you for considering her for Mom of the Year!

At nearly 103 years old, my mother has been the best mom there is for all of my nearly 69 years. I am sure that my older brother and sister agree, as well as her 8 grandchildren and 18 living great-

Vote before April 15! www.atGeist.com grandchildren. She has been a wonderful example of Christian living for those around her--in the community and at her church. Although her advanced years have robbed her of most of her eyesight and hearing, she remains positive and is daily thankful for all of her many blessings.

Lisa Lasher

Nominated by her husband, Brian I am nominating my wife as the mom of the year for several reasons. First, she has a health issue that only affects one in a million people. This special lady in my life NEVER complains for what she does. Her attitude is that it's a part of life - just deal with it and move on - life's too short. Lisa just loves to take care of her family and church. Second, our two kids have health issuses that she has to deal with every day. Our daughter who is 16 has been in and out of Riley Hospital for the last couple of years at periods of time from one to two weeks. Lisa stays with her while she is in there. My wife never complains about being out there. When our son, who is 12, needs something, she always stops what she is doing to take care of him. Her father suffers from dementia and he is gettng worse. She also is a caregiver so she goes to his apartment which is about 20 minutes away every day. While she is there, she makes him breakfast, prepares him a sandwich for lunch, makes sure he has taken his medicine, and cleans his place. She is also very active in our church. The passion and love

she has for kids is awesome. She serves on our Children's Ministries Team. She has been our VBS director for the last six summers. This summer will be her seventh summer leading us during a long, hard, awesome week. On Sunday mornings, she serves as a Sunday School teacher for the elementary kids. Then she also is the Sunday School superintendent. There are also things she does around the church to help out and does all of this without being asked. This is why I think she deserves to be Mom of the Year. I hope you agree with me.

Rebecca Perry Nominated by her daughter, Kathryn

My mom never fails to exceed my expectations and needs. I often come home from school in a bad mood and she is always there to cheer me up or put me in my place if I give her an attitude. Recently, we discovered that my mom has skin cancer, dimentia, and ADHD. Even when fighting her own battles, she puts on a strong face while she works three jobs to support our family. She acts tough for our sake but she is going through a lot. My mom should receive this award because she always puts our minor problems before her major ones and that's hard to do when she has four children to care for. In addition to wearing the title of "Mom of the Year", our winner will receive a prize package of:

T

he Indy Ski School on Geist is celebrating its ten-year anniversary. This is probably the coolest summer school offered (literally) since kids can learn how to ride the waves in their comfort zone. Lessons are offered during the week when the water is much calmer than on the weekend when so many boaters are out.

Spending a week on the water with Derek was the perfect solution for Addi to tackle her summer ski goals. Improved water confidence and oatmeal creme pies experiences were a bonus! His passion for kids and water made her summer fantastic. Thank you Derek!!” - Juli Bauer 44

We absolutely loved it! Derek was able to accomplish with our girls at 8 years old in one week that which we couldn’t have possibly done throughout the whole summer. They look forward to returning every summer!” - Jayson & April Hills

“We are going on our tenth year,” says Derek Dechert, founder and chief instructor of Indy Ski School on Geist (www.indyskischool.com). “Over the course of years, we’ve had over 800 students take our classes. We provide expert watersport instruction for all ages – and we should probably get a sponsorship from Little Debbie since we consume so many oatmeal creme pies!”

How Did Indy Ski School Begin?

Derek has been skiing since the age of six. He is a certified instructor through USA WATERSKI. After graduating from IU Bloomington in 1992, he went to Los Angeles where he started his career in the entertainment business as a freelance technician. When Derek isn’t skiing, he’s working as a union stagehand where his specialty is lighting. Years ago, he worked on the Jeopardy show and then the NBC soap “Sunset Beach." Recently, he helped with a Super Bowl commercial featuring Deon Sanders. Derek admits, “I have a great freelance career that allows me to take the time to do the ski school each summer and then go back to the entertainment world. In fact, this year I’m cutting the ski school a few weeks short because I have to be in Vegas to light the Cook Medical 50-Year Anniversary Conference.”

New Instructor This Summer The new instructor for this upcoming summer is Jason Highley. Jason Highley is 19 years old and a student at Indiana University. He has lived on Geist for 9 years. He graduated from Hamilton Southeastern High School and is also very active in the youth group of Holy Spirit at Geist. Jason has also competed in an amateur wakeboard league for 2 years and each year placed 1st in his class with an invitation to compete in the Regional tournament. Last year, Jason placed 3rd in the Eastern Regional. He is a member of the IU Wakeboard Team as well and placed 2nd in the Collegiate Regional Tournament as the C rider for their team.

“I have had some pretty amazing local kids as instructors over the last ten years,” says Derek who lives in Geist with his wife, Pam, and four-year-old son, Brodie. They are members of St. Simon Church where Derek has donated lessons. He has always gravitated toward helping others. In fact, when he first moved to Geist he gladly assisted many of his neighbors in learning how to ski. As a result, they told him that he should start a school to help others in the Geist community because they could recognize his sincere patience and passion for teaching watersports. So that’s the path (or wake) Derek decided to take. He continues, “I have had the help of Molly Harrison, a nationally-ranked trick skier; Jessica Hults, an Indiana state champ in wakeboarding; and, of course, Nate Smith, the number one men’s slalom skier on the planet right now.” Derek proudly recalls having taught Jessica how to ski on Geist when she was about ten years old. After completing her senior year in high school, she began to assist him with lessons and is now on the Indiana University Waterski and Wakeboard Team. Furthermore, Kids of all ages have learned how to waterski, slalom, wakeboard, and Nate is featured in the most recent issue of Water Ski Magazine kneeboard from Geist resident Derek Dechert on Geist Reservoir.

I appreciate the use of the boom device that Derek uses during class time. This is helpful to any child that may be afraid or reticent about being out in the water alone when first getting up on water skis.” - Amelia Rose

My kids loved learning how to wakeboard and ski which are now their favorite things to do. The instructors make it seem easy even if you’ve never done it before. Because of the Indy Ski School, we ended up buying a boat because my kids couldn’t stand to be out of the water. It also started a family vacation to Dale Hollow every year.” - Melissa Rogers april 2013 |

It’s impressive what the kids can learn in one week a year. What’s great about Indy Ski School is that they push the kids hard enough that they learn something new each session, yet they never push them so hard that they don’t enjoy it. Derek and his team do a great job taking a lot of photos and sending them out the same day so parents can see what the kids worked on that day. The photos and the Indy Ski School t-shirt are an added plus. My daughter, Kensi, also likes how they mix it up each year as she gets more experienced and they make sure she tries new things.” - Ellen Knowling Our daughter, Myla, looks forward to Indy Ski School every summer. She enjoys wake boarding, surfing, and eating oatmeal creme pies with Derek and friends. Myla has been attending for two years now. She has gained so much confidence on her board that she now calls wake boarding her favorite sport.” - Sandy McAlpin

Making Memories Upon Wake of Instruction

Indy Ski School on Geist offers beginning waterski, slalom, wakeboard, wake surf, wake skate, beginning barefoot, and kneeboard instruction. Both private lessons and four-day camps are available. Derek not only enjoys giving lessons but also taking many photos to capture the special moments. He sends hard copies to parents and posts all the photos on his Facebook page and on the local Townepost (www.townepost.com) website. “I love to see kids ski for the first time,” boasts Derek. One summer, Derek tried having two boats for watercraft lessons; but because he felt unsatisfied by not being present in both boats at the same time to take photos, give instruction, and soak in the glory of watching the kids learn and have fun, he quickly gave up on that idea. He concludes, “I love to see smiles on their faces and knowing that they’ll do this the rest of their lives. They can pass on their knowledge to the next generation.” To sign up for a ski class or to learn how to become an instructor, contact Derek at indyskischool@comcast.net or visit his website, www.indyskischool.com. Janet Striebel is a Fishers resident and freelance writer. She and her husband, Doug have three children: Ryan, Jessica, and Justin. She has been writing for neighboring atGeist.com for over seven years and claims that the best part is meeting all the interesting people in her community.

WWII Veterans were honored at Indian Creek Elementary School with their annual USO-style show, highlighted by a book signing by veterans profiled in the new book WWII Duty, Honory, Country.

WWII Duty, Honor, Country | Kara Reibel | Photos by Brenda Staples Photography

“Steve Hardwick and Duane Hodgin began a personal quest to assure that students and those who will populate the future will recall with detail and accuracy the great challenge of this world at war and the men and women who were engaged in the vanquishing of a great evil.” - Taken from the Foreword of WWII Duty, Honor, Country So they have. This collective account from 84 brave men and women whose interviews have been penned to paper and collected in one book reminds us that the “Greatest Generation” has many lessons from which to learn. In February on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Indian Creek Elementary School, militaryclad MPs stood at the entrance to direct traffic while those whose stories have been told in this amazing book made their way to the gymnasium for the book’s celebratory launch. The gym was transformed to resemble a USO hall. A standingroom only-crowd gathered to honor these WWII veterans and perhaps collect their signatures in a copy of the book. Hodgin and Hardwick were quite obvious in their intent of the celebration – it is all for the veterans. Even though they organized the stories and pieced together the book, it was not them seated ready to

pen their name – only the veterans. “It isn’t about Duane or myself,” said Steve, who did a wonderful Jack Benny impersonation. “It’s about these incredible men and women to whom the world owes a sincere debt of gratitude.” The book celebration included music and skits by former students of Steve as well as by WWII Veteran Jim McDowell and Joy Conners (LCHS music teacher). An additional honor was bestowed upon the WWII veterans as Mr. Tom Applegate, former head of Veterans Affairs for Indiana, awarded each veteran with a Distinguished Hoosier Award. The Distinguished Hoosier Award is one of the highest tributes given WWII Duty, Honor, Country co-authors Steve Hardwick and Duane Hodgin interviewed 84 WWII out by the State of Indiana to its citizens. veterans for their book. It is solely granted at the discretion of the Governor to Hoosiers who have uniquely brought admiration and respect to the state through their character and accomplishments. No one could argue that there is not a more deserving group of recipients. For Hardwick, this all began while studying at Indiana State University in the fall of 1985 when he interviewed Terre Haute resident and Holocaust survivor, Eva Kor, for an assignment. Two years earlier while Hardwick was serving in the military in West Germany, he had visited two concentration camps. The visits had an impact on him. Mrs. Kor asked Steve to volunteer for the CANDLES (her Holocaust museum in Terre Haute, www.candlesholocaustmuseum.org) inquest into the death of Dr. Josef Mengele, who performed inhumane experiments on prisoners at the Auschwitz death camp (Mrs. Kor and her twin sister were part of his “experiments”). After the inquest, Mrs. Kor asked the volunteers how they would use what they learned. Hardwick announced to the group that his hopes were to share the stories of the Holocaust survivors when he became a teacher. Forever inspired by Eva Kor’s miraculous story of survival and forgiveness and those of WWII april 2013 |

veterans, Hardwick – in his roles of teacher, father, and now author – has dedicated much of his time to honoring those who served our country. Co-Author Duane Hodgin’s involvement in writing this book was personally motivated as well, but for different reasons. On July 13, 1944, while stationed in New Guinea, Everett Hodgin was serving his country during WWII. Back in Richmond, Indiana, his wife, Ellabell, gave birth to their son, Duane. Like thousands of American servicemen, Everett was not present at the birth of his son. In May of 2004, Duane took his father, Everett, to Steve Hardwick’s WWII Tribute put on by current and former students of Hardwick’s.

Cogan said, “In combat, every day is a life time.” WWII: Duty, Honor, Country is available on Amazon.com and also online at BarnesandNoble.com and available as an eBook. The Carmel Barnes & Noble will host a book signing April 13 from 2-3 p.m. for the authors, and several veterans will be available to autograph books. For more information, visit ww2dutyhonorcountry.com. Kara Reibel, owner of Geist Pilates, has been a fitness professional for over 25 years. She is the mother of 3 kids and lives in the Geist area.

Upon retiring from Lawrence Township, Hodgin suggested that he and Hardwick interview these veterans and record their stories. The interviews began in January, 2011, with Everett Hodgin being the first to be interviewed. The list of veterans to be included quickly grew to 84, all residents of Indiana. This is the largest collection of personal accounts from WWII to be printed in one book. Other featured veterans include: Edgar Whitcomb, former Governor of Indiana, who was in a bomber squadron in the Philippines when Pearl Harbor was bombed, 3 Tuskegee Airmen, 4 men who served in Okinawa, 2 who were at Pearl Harbor, 6 who fought in The Battle of the Bulge, 6 who participated in the planning and/or storming the beaches at Normandy, many former POWs, 8 women who served on the home front or military, 1 Holocaust survivor (Mrs. Kor), and many, many more. Navy Veteran Ed Moss (USS Neosho) said, “In the war, I learned to serve my country for a purpose greater than myself.” Eight of the veterans featured in the book are no longer with us. When Everett Hodgin was interviewed, he was the oldest at 94. At 95, he was the first of eight who have died since work began on the book. In 15 years, nearly all WWII veterans will have left us. The youngest is about 86 years old right now. As this generation continues to diminish, Hardwick and Hodgin have provided them “a place in the hall of time.” As the last warriors are called home, Hardwick and Hodgin answer the war’s call to “remember and honor.” As Army Veteran (Normandy) Gene

ghpoa to survey carroll road For years, residents living in Admirals Bay along Carroll Road have had questions as to where their property ends and the landscaping easement of GHPOA begins. Many residents have planted trees, shrubs, flowers, and mulched along a property line that is difficult to discern. The GHPOA grounds committee wants to eliminate the confusion by having this boundary of the association surveyed in early April. Axis Surveying, LLC will be out to mark the landscaping easement along the west boundary of Admirals Bay, from 86th St. to the entrance of Treasure Pointe to the north. In addition to resolving the landscaping issues for homeowners, GHPOA's new landscaping vendor Engledow will use this survey to help in the ongoing maintenance of the grounds. ew r N hip! e d s Un ner Ow

The chefs also supply diners with many fish choices including shrimp po’boy sliders, spicy shrimp cocktails, flying buffalo shrimp and fresh edamame steamed and sprinkled with sea salt, rainbow trout, and a Norwegian salmon seasoned with their own lime pepper rub. The Flying Shrimp GastroPub also has vegetarian dishes, chicken, a Hoosier classic fresh-cut tenderloin offered grilled or breaded and delicious mancave wings with a little hotty or raspberry BBQ sauce that is really fingerlicking good!

| J. Andy Murphy You can’t just call it a “Pub” because it truly is a “GastroPub!” Let’s define the meaning of gastropub, which is a British term for a public house that specializes in serving high-quality food, fresh in nature and extremely appealing to the taste buds. The Flying Shrimp GastroPub located at 10462 Olio Road in Fishers does, indeed, live up to this British gastro food experience. A lot of new extras combine family dining and sports viewing including twenty-three 52-inch televisions and four 110-inch projectors for large-screen experience. And they have a very friendly staff who remembers your name. The menu is packed with a solid variety of offerings from a footlong bratwurst to their bison ribeye steaks (which are locally grown). The house favorite would include the 1/2-pound lamb burger seasoned with rosemary and toppings including feta and kalamata olives. A secret sauce is added to make this a super choice of something new in the “burger” menu.

The bar offers a wellstocked selection of bottled beer and on-tap favorites from Flat 12, Sun King, left hand milk stout, and Upland. If you like martinis, this is the place for you as the selection seems endless. Patrons can also enjoy one of the area’s largest fine liquor selections in Geist just south of the reservoir. The Flying Shrimp GastroPub has created daily bar specials with Happy Hours Monday through Friday, which include $2 off all appetizers to boot. You probably are familiar with the site that now holds the Flying Shrimp GastroPub as it was formerly called “Bubbaz.” I asked Matt Leckrone why he decided to change course with this new restaurant. “I wanted this restaurant to be more about my style of cooking and a sports atmosphere where families can meet. As a child, my military parents moved me from one country to the next. At each new school, it was through sports that I quickly made new friends of various ethnicities and social stature. My wife, Paula, was born in Bolivia and I in South Korea. We met several years ago in a sports bar and dreamed of having our own gathering place to share our love of sports, great food, and fine spirits. As a former habachi chef in a Japanese steakhouse, I named our place Flying Shrimp GastroPub because you may see some shrimp flying around. We want you to enjoy your visit and to let us know if there is anything that is less than 100% perfect,” said owner Matt. So if you are looking for a new flavor of dining with fresh, locally-purchased quality food and a friendly atmosphere, look no further than The Flying Shrimp GastroPub. This is just what the Geist neighborhoods ordered!
