The Greater Lawrence Chamber of Commerce (GLC) exists to further the interests of local businesses and organizations while supporting the community. Originally tied to the City of Lawrence, it has expanded as Lawrence Township has grown. Its members are located throughout the northeast corner of Marion County and Indianapolis, which includes not only traditional Lawrence, but also the areas of Binford, Castleton, Geist and Oaklandon. Members enjoy the perks of belonging to the GLC in an area that is continuing to expand and thrive. They find making contacts becomes much easier with increased opportunities for interaction. Membership also enhances credibility. Since February of 2020, the GLC has been enthusiastically led by President Brad Klopfenstein. “Businesses or organizations benefit by joining the chamber,” he says. “It gives members the chance to network and be exposed to potential clients and customers. Belonging shows employees that their employer cares about the community. The chamber supports various festivals and many organizations such as the Lawrence Advisory Council on Disabilities. The chamber also attends mayor’s meetings, council meetings and city committee meetings. We stay up to date on issues affecting the community and we are a conduit of information to our members. Plus, we are here to help members negotiate the bureaucracy of government.” The GLC offers five levels of membership and corresponding benefits. Nonprofit organizations receive 20% off the price of any tier. Membership begins at $275 for the Copper level, and includes base amenities. These include job postings, coupons and press releases on the GLC website, as well as a ribbon-cutting ceremony and host duties for an after-hours business mixer. GreaterLawrenceChamber.org | 7

Each level adds increasing support. The midpoint membership stage is $1,600 for Silver, and this is the level where brand exposure kicks in. Logo placement and the opportunity to create a mini web page on the GLC website are some of the perks. The highest level is Platinum, for $5,500. At this point advertising is increased, and tables of eight are reserved for important city occasions such as State of the City and State of the School addresses. The organization is structured in a way that promotes and advances both its members and the community. It is led and governed by a volunteer board of directors who serve two-year terms. Day-to-day operations are executed by a professional staff of Klopfenstein and Rebecca McVay, marketing and events coordinator. A dedicated group serves as ambassadors, and works to recruit and maintain members. “What is so great about the Greater Lawrence community is the diversity of people that you don’t find anywhere else in Indiana,” Klopfenstein says. “We have such a broad range from the whole City of Lawrence, Castleton, north Shadeland and Binford. There is still a bit of military presence and the hub has shifted to the revitalized historic Fort Harrison campus, where you can walk to restaurants and businesses. It’s even got a 1,700-acre Fort Harrison State Park. Klopfenstein says the organization has room to grow. “Our goal is to give our members a feeling of belonging and a sense of place, with a leg up on everything Lawrence has to offer - and it’s got a lot,” he says. The Greater Lawrence Chamber is located at 6501 Sunnyside Road in Indianapolis. For more info, call 317-541-9876, email info@greaterlawrencechamber.org, or visit greaterlawrencechamber.org.

CREAM OF THE CROP MSD of Lawrence Township Makes a Massive Investment in Schools Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

In January of 2014, when Dr. Shawn A. Smith became superintendent of schools for the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township, he saw a hole in the district with regard to facilities planning and long-term maintenance. Therefore, he spearheaded the Blue Ribbon Facilities Plan, the district’s multiyear initiative to update, secure and plan for the future. “Every student and employee deserves a vibrant, safe environment that is conducive to learning and teaching,” Smith says. “Strong schools yield strong communities.”

Hill Elementary, Lawrence Central and Lawrence North softball stadium upgrades, Sunnyside Elementary, and Amy Beverland Elementary. In 2020 district leaders broke ground on a new transportation facility, scheduled for completion in late 2021. They also started full renovations at Lawrence Central, Lawrence North, Brook Park Elementary, Forest Glen Elementary, Oaklandon Elementary, Winding Ridge Elementary, and the four Early Learning Centers. The Early Learning Centers and elementary schools will be completed this fall.

“We have some buildings built in the 1960s and others in the 1990s, so the needs across buildings are vastly different,” says Dr. Between 2015 and 2020, more than $174 million have been invested Dana Altemeyer, director of communications. “One thing that’s in capital improvement projects. That is outside of 2019’s $191 consistent across the board is our commitment to safety, so we put million capital referendum, used to renovate the two high schools and enhanced safety and security measures in place in all buildings, four remaining elementary schools, make aesthetic upgrades to the including the reconfiguration of entryways to make them more Early Learning Centers, and update playground equipment. secure.” To date, the district has completed Crestview Elementary, McKenzie Center for Innovation and Technology, Lawrence Central and Lawrence North stadiums and auditoriums, Mary Castle Elementary, Belzer Middle School’s concessions area and track, Skiles Test Elementary, Indian Creek Elementary, Harrison

Some of the security upgrades include bullet-resistant glass, keyless door access, new video systems and new cameras. The district leaders also implemented a buzz-in system for all visitors to the building, created separate bus and parent traffic, and zoned buildings for limited access.

“I think sometimes there may be a misconception that the school just added a fancy facade onto the building, but there is so much more to it than that,” Altemeyer says.

“These spaces allow the students to better receive services such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and needed medical support,” Altemeyer says.

Contemporary learning spaces are different than they were back in the 1960s, starting with bandwidth capacity in a 1:1 learning environment where students in all grade levels have devices. As for flexible learning spaces, elementary schools have now all been equipped with large maker-space labs, which are multi-purpose rooms that promote hands-on learning in areas such as design, 3D printing, audio-visual, hand tools and programming. New spaces for exceptional learners meet the cognitive and physical needs of students with more profound disabilities.

Over time the scope of the project has continued to grow. Currently, there are 11 different construction projects happening simultaneously. Other projects have tackled inequities among facilities. For instance, Lawrence Central’s decades-old pool, lovingly referred to as a hot tub, needed to go. Lawrence North’s pool, built in 2012, had some structural issues. “When we think about growing the aquatics program as well as equity in the offerings between our two schools, the community

felt strongly that we needed to have two competitive aquatics facilities, and we were responsive to that by implementing a plan for a 50-meter pool at both buildings,” Altemeyer says. The high school renovations are taking place in phases. Work will not be finished until 2024, as school remains in operation during construction. Plans are underway for building a threestory academic wing onto the front of both Lawrence Central and Lawrence North. Once students can move, additional demolition and construction can take place. Capital projects planned for 2023 include Belzer Middle School and Fall Creek Valley Middle School, which will target specific needs at each building. Once those are complete, the district will start over with reassessing the needs of schools. “The district was in a place where some of the buildings had areas that had fallen into disrepair over time,” Altemeyer says. “Maintaining a cycle revisiting all facilities is far more cost effective.” While academics are at the forefront of everything that the school corporation does, curb appeal matters too, as strong schools protect property values. “People don’t want to send their children to dilapidated, outdated

facilities,” Altemeyer says. “We want students, families and community members to be proud of their schools.” Take Forest Glen, which two years ago had carpet on the walls. While the education was still of high quality, as evidenced by the year-round wait list, the building looked tired and dated. “When you step inside a fresh, revitalized, colorful space, it’s inviting and exciting,” Altemeyer says. Feedback from parents, students, faculty, staff and community members has been positive. “As a parent, employee and community resident, the renovations bring an additional layer of pride and excitement,” says Lawrence Central Principal Franklyn Bush. “The vision to ensure that Lawrence Township schools are the top of the line in every aspect is important for alumni, and current and future students.” “The community is proud to live and work in Lawrence Township,” adds Altemeyer, who notes that when they have dedication ceremonies, retired teachers and alumni often come back to see the renovated spaces. “There is a sense of pride as everyone feels the energy and vibrancy of a new facility.”

The Greentree team wants to create an experience for their customers that makes them so outrageously happy with the service that they want to refer us to the people they most care about. No one knows the Lawrence Community better, is more experienced in real estate, and cares more about their customers than the Greentree team.

POISED FOR GROWTH

The Lawrence Township School Foundation is Making an Impact Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

Sometimes the best advocate can be the one you don’t even know. Recently a customer was checking out at a local Walmart when they mentioned to the person scanning their items about EdEx. Short for Educators’ Exchange, EdEx is the Lawrence Township School Foundation’s (LTSF) free supply store that is stocked with office supplies, paper, books and craft items to use in classrooms. Staffed by volunteers and stocked with donations from the community, the purpose of EdEx is to supply teachers with free supplies that enrich the curriculum. It’s one of many programs that the foundation supports. The Walmart employee shared the information with her supervisor, who was impressed with the work the foundation was doing and called Board President Barb Austin to encourage her to apply for a grant. Ultimately the store awarded the LTSF a $500 grant, to purchase supplies from Walmart for donation to their teacher exchange. “That all came to be because someone in the community advocated for one of our programs,” Austin says. “We love to inspire that kind of action from the community.” This is why this year, the foundation’s message is, “The power of you.”

Established in 1983, the LTSF serves the Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township teachers and students. Every dollar raised is allocated to various programs to support the students and staff. “It’s a unique relationship between the foundation and the school district, as we work hand in hand to identify those programs that are of greatest value to both our students and our staff in terms of pushing achievement forward,” Austin says. The school district leaders indicate programs they need assistance with, and the foundation works closely with the superintendent and his administrative team in identifying those areas where the LTSF can make a meaningful impact. The programs are balanced across all 21 buildings to include programs for elementary, middle and high school students, as well as faculty and staff. “Where programs aren’t supported by tax dollars, that’s where we fill in,” says Taylor Williams, development associate. “Our foundation’s hard work allows for our school community to provide additional resources to our students that go beyond local, state and federal funding,” adds Superintendent Dr. Shawn Smith. “They support innovation for our district to be a ‘District of Destination.’ ”

The programs fall into one of four categories. These student-centric initiatives include Year 13 Prep; Hands-On Learning; Healthy Body, Healthy Mind; and Today and Tomorrow. This help may come in the form of grants that assist teachers in their classrooms. It may be actual scholarships. It may be a way to give students the chance to go on a legacy field trip. For instance, Creative Impact Grants give teachers the opportunity to apply for funding that supports creative and innovative projects. Last year one of the grants that was fully funded by the LTSF was submitted by Lawrence Central’s performing arts department. “It was a year of turmoil,” Austin says. “Students struggled with feelings of isolation as well as social emotional issues.”

Teachers recognized that student learning was being affected, and they needed an outlet for their pain, frustration and confusion. The performing arts department did a documentary that mainly followed show-choir students in the midst of preparations, as they grappled with the notion that despite the hours of rehearsals, they didn’t know whether they would be able to perform. “It’s a beautiful documentary that allowed students to speak their minds and share their struggles,” Austin says. “It not only provided an outlet for them, but it also shared great insight as to what was in their heads and on their hearts.” The foundation hosts three annual fundraising events, two of which are spring and fall golf outings. Funds raised go towards the

Bridge Fund, which ensures that all students can participate in all school aspects without limitations, such as academics, athletics, extracurricular activities and special projects. In addition, each spring they host an event at the Crane Bay Event Center, which celebrates the impact of their donors and community members. The school district’s tagline is, “Strong Schools, Strong Community.” It’s an adage they live by. “There’s a saying, ‘It takes a village,’” Austin says. “In this case, it takes a community, and we are fortunate that the community rallies around the foundation. We want our donors to understand the impact they’re making. It’s significant, and recognized by the school and the staff.” Lawrence Central alumnus Meghan Hughes says her schooling experience taught her much of what she still relies on now, nearly 40 years later. “I learned how be part of a diverse community, and how to learn from my fellow students, musicians and athletes, as well as my teachers,” Hughes says. “Lawrence Central allowed me to grow and aim high for what comes after high school graduation. I believe all students deserve that. I admire the LTSF mission, and I hope my modest gift contributes to the vision.”

Neal Gore, school community liaison for Harrison Hill Elementary, maintains that the LTSF has been an outstanding community support. “Thank you for all that you are doing to support our students and families,” Gore says of the LTSF. Still, the LTSF leaders would love to double or triple their capacity in order to spring forward. “We need to do more, and we are definitely positioned for growth,” says Austin, noting that it will take a combination of fundraising and community outreach to continue to grow. One group that’s stepping forward is alumni, who are eager to show their support. “We aren’t picky about how people want to get involved and assist,” Austin says. “Anyone who has a philanthropic approach can reach out.” The Lawrence Township School Foundation is located at 6501 Sunnyside Road in Indianapolis.
