It might just be that Drew Skillman was destined to be a racecar driver, since he grew up running around and working in the Skillman race shop. When the factory-made 2010 Ford Cobra Jets arrived to sell, the driver within him emerged. Drew recalled that he intended to race only once, but his grandfather, Ray Skillman, joined in the fun. At 70 years old, Ray resurrected his drag racing career with his 24-year-old grandson by entering their supercars in the Bristol Showdown. In 2012, Drew’s father, Bill, also found his inner driver, and the three generations bonded around their passion for straight line racing.

It didn’t take long for Ray and his racing crew to make their supercars launch flat out off the starting line. However, Drew realized that consistency is as important as speed in their Elapsed Time sport. Absorbing knowledge in his early years at the Ray Skillman Race Shop and Dealerships, Drew had an advantage of learning from experienced teachers. Bill referred to Donnie

Gardner, a former Pro Stock crew chief, when he stated, “Drew got a good mental education from him, and so I think he was way further ahead of the curve.” Drew confirmed that Donnie got him into drag racing, taught him the basic fundamentals and gave him insight into some possible racing challenges.

Drew found quick success at Atlanta in 2012 and made history by becoming the youngest driver to pull off double wins at a national event in NHRA Stock and Super Stock in the same day. He forwarded his career by taking a championship in the 2013 Division 3 Stock Elimination and came very close to winning more championships the following year.

Ready for bigger challenges in 2015, Drew joined the Elite Motorsports team of Freeman Pro Stock Racing with his bright red Chevrolet Camaro. Feeling lucky to have such a head start with great teachers and very good equipment, Drew explained, “Erica Enders taught me to drive a Pro Stock.” When coming off the starting line, he mastered how to let go of the line lock and the clutch at the same time the light flashed. As a result, he reached

his fastest speed at 214.80 mph, and in St. Louis, he won his first professional level race. Drew proved to be a great student of the sport and was awarded Rookie of the Year, placing fifth in the championship.

This year began with new rule changes in the Pro Stock Class, which included switching to fuel injection engines and lowering the rpm levels. The engineers on the racing crew strategized and struggled on how to regain speed with the new limitations. Another change occurred for Drew, this time in his personal life, when he happily married Brittany Ladd. As a newlywed, his wife supports his racing and joins him at the track when her work schedule allows.

In June, Drew swapped racing teams by leaving Elite Motorsports and combining the forces of Skillman Motorsport with Gray Motorsports.

Breaking down the relationship between the teams, Drew clarified that the engines are leased through Gray Motorsports in North Carolina. Along with the engines, very skilled engineers work to create more horsepower. He added that a great engine has to work

with the chassis, and both must follow the rule book. However, he analyzed, “What isn’t in the book is what we are doing,” and Bill interjected, “You are always looking for the gray areas.” Working with two teammates, who have their own cars and crew chiefs, Drew disclosed that all three teams collaborate and share with each other.

In August at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, Drew collected his first win of the season and also secured the sixth spot in the championship chase. Problems with the car began after his win, and he dropped to eighth with four races to go in the season. Drew stated that they would aggressively attack the upcoming races and even predicted to move back into sixth with Bill guessing fifth.

At Pennsylvania, the conditions were rainy, and Drew’s issues continued as he didn’t make it out the first round after qualifying.

Winning in Texas at the AAA NHRA Fall Nationals, Drew and his race team rallied to get back on track as they head into the last two Pro Stock races of the season. In a post-race interview, Drew stated, “This was huge for us. We were down in the points. We rallied. We did not have a good racecar this weekend, but we had a great team.

The people at Axalta, Indiana Car Exchange, I just can’t thank enough people.” Moving up in the points from eighth to sixth place in the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Championship, Drew is hoping to continue his surge at Las Vegas and Pomona, California.

Fast forward to next season, Drew will have a new 2016 Camaro to drive, and he will begin with testing in the off-season. Drew concluded, “We’re going to win the Championship. That’s our goal for next season. It all comes down to the last six races, but you have to do well during the regular season.” With his racing family behind him and sponsors secured for years to come, Drew is optimistic about his future. Possessing the resources, knowledge, skills, positivity and a laidback personality, Drew Skillman might just be destined to win many championships in his drag racing career.

Marcia Duke, chair for the event, says, “We feel very blessed that so many within our community share our vision. The Center Grove Community is filled with many great people who love helping.”

omething old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. Traditions like this never change, no matter how much weddings change through the years. When Sophia’s Bridal, Tux and Prom closed the doors on its location on U.S. 31 just north of the Greenwood Park Mall this past October 2 and reopened their doors the following day, October 3, at their new location on Southport Road, they kept those traditions and made them even better.

The bridal, tux and prom shop, serving the metro area for nearly 10 years, relocated to their new home at 2025 E. Southport Rd., right in the heart of historic Southport.

The move was a necessary one for Sophia’s and one that also worked beautifully for the local redevelopment commission who is on a mission to revitalize the area by repurposing the historic buildings

with a fresh, modern look to attract more customers. The four-year revitalization plan calls for the area to be transformed to a village-type area featuring new shops, restaurants and events. Already, the spot across the street from Sophia’s new shop, formerly a gravel pit, has been cleared out and readied for new construction. Sophia’s Owner Jessica Limeberry says, “We’re happy to be a part of it.”

The journey down the aisle to Sophia’s new location was not full of diamonds and fairytales. Limeberry and her husband bought the bridal shop in January 2014 from the previous owner with whom she’d been friends. As the owner of Lemongrass Photography, another business in the wedding industry, Limeberry seized the opportunity. “I love working with brides and their families,” Limeberry says. “I love being part of all the excitement.”

Limeberry capitalized on that excitement and built upon Sophia’s reputation.

“Sophia’s service is the best of the best,” she says. Not only is their service one of their specialties, but their selection of gowns from exclusive designers, far beyond those in the local chain stores, had customers packing their former 3,200 sq. ft. store.

The previous owner began to consider relocating to a bigger store but couldn’t find a building that was the right fit. When Limeberry took over the shop, she too struggled with finding a new location for the store. As a bridge, Limeberry decided to spiff up and brighten the shop by adding some new dressing rooms. Ultimately, she knew she had to find a stand-alone building.

“We needed to start with a blank palette,” Limeberry says.

Then a perfect proposal happened. The old post office on Southport Road was for sale once again. A local church had purchased the building, which sat vacant for about 30 years. Limeberry says, “After the church bought it, they cleaned it up, then decided

"I've spent an awful lot of time here and have met a lot of wonderful people over the years," Farmer said as he prepared to start up the Zamboni. "I come here and work part-time at the Fuel games and in the Youth arena. The crowds are always easy to deal with, and I like being a part of the fun staff that goes on here.”

Farmer stressed that the biggest thing for him to remember is to just drive slow and turn right.

“That's a big one,” Farmer said. “I'm really glad I don't drive this at the horse shows.

"I'm always having the best time of my life at these games," Allan said during a break from meeting the crowd before a recent game. "I'm blessed to be with this team, and I'm really enjoying this third season. We have the greatest fan base, and I love talking with them. There is a real party atmosphere before and during the games. There are a lot of interactive things going on such as the face painting, bidding for jerseys and hitting a tennis ball into a goal. It's a lot of fun."

Allan, who is also the emcee for The Indianapolis Indians, said staying busy works for him.

"It doesn't leave me with a lot of time to get into trouble," he laughed as he gave a fan a high five. "I enjoy talking to them and getting everyone excited about the games, the entertainment and everything we have to offer."

No one gets Fuel fans riled up the way Nitro, the team mascot, does. He knows how to mingle and get everyone fired up about the games.

Nitro says he doesn't have any trouble getting around the ice rink or the coliseum.

"The best part of being Nitro is being a part of the game itself," Nitro said in a recent interview. "I love the noise, the crowds, the music, the team and the whole experience.

"I just use my eyes and look for fans," he laughed. "I am pleased that everyone is happy to see me. Kids are always excited to see me and want to chase after me. That's

Nitro likes to keep his true identity as secret as he can. He says he's like a super hero. He wants to keep people guessing.

He's usually good at getting around, but he does have a mishap now and then.

"I fell down behind the Zamboni machine one night, hit the wall and fell down. I had a hard time getting back up, and the audience roared with laughter.

They loved it. I grabbed on to the back of the Zamboni and was dragged across the ice. They laughed even more."

Nitro, who graduated from the University of Arkansas, said he hasn't seen the Netflix comedy "Mascots" yet, but he says many of his mascot buddies appear in it. "I would really love to see it," he stated. "I've heard it's very funny. I hope it shows how much fun it is to be a mascot."

PILOTING FROM WAY UP HIGH

Spencer Stevens has a bird's eye view of all the Fuel game intermissions from his post in the rafters. He watches from a lofty position as he pilots a 16-foot blimp with his remote control.

"The crowd loves it, and I enjoy looking for a fan who is not paying attention, so I can land the blimp near his or her head," Stevens said. "I also fill the blimp with prizes and drop free tickets, Chickfil-A gift cards and Community Health Network information. I also chase after Nitro and hit him in the back of the head with the blimp."

Stevens works at Hobby Shop RC (Radio Control), 1102 S. Franklin Rd., Suite A, Indianapolis. He pilots the blimp with his dad, Marty, and John Gaither, who also pilots a blimp at the Indianapolis Colts games.

On October 3, 2016, Purdue University announced the launch of a unique partnership between Indianapolis Public Schools and the city of Indianapolis that will result in a STEM focused charter school. Purdue Polytechnic High School which will be an IPS Innovation Network School, will open in the Fall of 2017.

Purdue President Mitch Daniels said, “We thank IPS and the city for the partnership, which we hope will build a new pathway to Purdue and to successful careers for future students from downtown Indianapolis. Students enrolled in the school, which will be located in the former PR Mallory building at 3029 E. Washington Street but during renovation of that location, the inaugural class will have temporary residence nearby at 201 S. Rural Street.”

Mayor Joe Hogsett is thrilled for the partnership and investment Purdue is making in the community. “When the doors to the

Vino Villa offers about 500 different wines and 40 to 50 cheeses at any particular time.

“We seek out new and interesting cheeses and wines,” Paul said. “We’re looking for a unique experience to give our guests.”

While Vino Villa does not offer mixed drinks, it does carry a number of beers from local microbreweries, including Oaken Barrel in Greenwood, Taxman in Bargersville, Upland in Bloomington and Sun King in Indianapolis.

Despite Vino Villa’s success, Paul and Laura have plans for the future. They purchased the building behind the restaurant and plan to use that property for additional parking as well as the possibility of moving a portion of the retail sales to the new property, opening much of the first floor for additional seating.

While Paul works fulltime at the restaurant, Laura works fulltime as a healthcare consultant, but both are responsible for the

vision of Vino Villa.

“This is very much a partnership,” Laura said.

Paul and Laura have been married for 30 years, and they have two grown children.

SUPER SOCIAL SUPERINTENDENT OF GREENWOOD “It was new and different,” he said. “Everyone said it was going to make our lives easier. I remember having to get staff members to buy into actually using the computer.”

Fast-forward nearly 20 years and Dr. DeKoninck’s students have never known a time without desktop computers and the Internet. Social media is commonplace. But to most of those of Dr. DeKoninck’s generation, a tweet is what a bird does, not a method of communication.

Prior to starting as Superintendent at Greenwood, he had never used Twitter, but had seen other superintendents starting to use. So in September, 2013, two months after starting his tenure as Greenwood Superintendent, he posted his first tweet, and he was hooked.

Since 2013, he’s tweeted more than 6,600 times, now averaging about 30 tweets a week.

“I try not to be addicted to it,” he said. “I just don’t have that kind of time.”

He doesn’t tweet about personal things, though he has been known to tweet an occasional “Happy birthday” to his daughters or “Happy anniversary” to his wife.

“It shows I’m human and proud of my family,” he said.

He also avoids politics and other controversial subjects.

“I try to keep from embarrassing myself,” he said. “I don’t want to say something really dumb that will come back to bite me.”

Rather, if you check Dr. DeKoninck’s Twitter feed, you’ll see tweets such as an update from Friday night’s football game, photos of Greenwood robotics students at the Endress + Hauser Career Community Forum October 6, or photos from a recent middle school/high school choir concert. “I try to highlight the kids,” he said. “They enjoy being the subjects.

They appreciate me coming to class or other events. They’ll say ‘Hey Dr. D. How ya’ doin’?’ I enjoy engaging in conversations with the kids. It’s what makes my job fun.”

It’s the elementary students who really enjoy seeing their superintendent in their classroom.

“They’ll see me and ask to get their picture taken,” he laughs.

In addition to students, teachers also appreciate him making appearances in their rooms. He’ll often stealthily pop into a classroom to observe and take photos, but not to criticize.

“Teachers know I’m not in their classroom to scrutinize what they’re doing,” he said, “but to celebrate what they’re doing.”

Parents, as well, seem to appreciate the tweets.

“They can see I’ve been in that classroom,” he said. “They can see I have a pulse on what’s happening. They see I’m engaged and interested in what’s happening.”

When Dr. DeKnoninck began tweeting in 2013 he was excited when he discovered he had 100 followers. He now has more than 2,100 followers, and believes the tweets are a great way to publicize not only the accomplishments of the students and teachers, but also what Greenwood Schools has to offer.

“I want to show the good things happening in our district,” he said.

“I do many things for community outreach, and social media is one more piece. We’re competing for kids with other school districts, and I want to make people aware of what Greenwood has to offer.”

PASTOR DANNY ANDERSON THOUGHTS ON THE UPCOMING HOLIDAY SEASON

As the holidays are quickly approaching, Pastor Danny Anderson of Emmanuel Church shared his thoughts on this special and sometimes stressful time of the year.

His church begins preparing months in advance about the same time that pumpkin spice lattes become available, which gets him into the holiday spirit. Not only at the holidays but every week the church offers a relaxed, come as you are environment.

Their goal is to create a service that is environmentally comfortable so one can be theologically aware. They do not shrink back from the word of God, Pastor Danny stated, “We let the word of God do the work in people’s hearts.”

Discussing what the holidays mean to him, “It’s a great time to reflect on all the wonderful things that God has done in my life. I don’t think we do that enough, we don’t count our blessings…So it’s a great time to sit back and say, wow you know

what, God has been faithful to me.” As a person of strong faith he believes it is a time for praising God. As so many families do at Thanksgiving, his family goes around the table before they eat and each person says what they are thankful for. It is traditions like this, that generate incredible bonding experiences with moving times filled with sometimes tears and laughter.

Looking at Christmas as a time to celebrate the Gospel and the birth of Jesus, Pastor Danny explained, “It’s a special time to look back and to say how did he come into the world? Why did he come into the world and what does it mean that he came into the world?” Feeling added pressure to repackage the same story in a different and creative way to reach as many people as possible, he described it as a rescue mission.

“God sent Jesus into this world to rescue us from our sin,” he also added, “the baby came into this world to reconcile us to God and

that is the greatest message in the world.”

Making his message clear and relatable is his goal; Pastor Danny knows that it is a special opportunity to bring people closer to God. For those who do not normally attend church his message was simple, “Christmas is really about Jesus, it’s the moment where he stepped into this world as a baby to bring the possibility of abundant life to us.” He went on to propose that if someone is searching for the meaning of life or for something to fill a void, then they are really searching for God. People look in all the wrong places, such as drugs, alcohol, success, recognition, popularity and elicit pleasures for satisfaction. Concluding that you cannot find satisfaction in another person, drug, substance or anything, Pastor Danny analyzed, “Your soul is really thirsty for God and you may not even know it.”

The Emmanuel Church focuses on the truth that Jesus came into the world to bring abundant life to people in John 10:10. Teaching that you can live a thrilling and amazing eternal life now and that death is the graduation into the fullness of eternity. Speaking more in depth, he revealed, “What I believe in my heart, I’m utterly convinced that Jesus brought with him knowledge of reality. What is real in this world.” He went to clarify that the things we see are temporary and the things that are unseen are eternal as in the Kingdom of God. When summarizing he said, “He brought with him the opportunity to live a different way, to live a life of love, a life filled with peace and a life filled with joy.

Don’t worry about tomorrow.” The only way to achieve this is to believe there is another Kingdom of God and that is how Pastor Danny tries to live each day.

The church is also known simply as “E” with three locations, one in each Greenwood, Franklin and Banta.

This year extra services will be provided on Christmas Eve instead of the usual Sunday times. Seeking to reach people, who have written off church as boring and irrelevant, Pastor Danny challenges them to join him in a worship service with a free cup of coffee. Witnessing that unfortunately the holidays can bring out the worst in some people, he hopes that those, who are struggling, will turn to the church for guidance, peace and hope.

The Tri Tornadoes are a triathlon team that trains together at the local Baxter YMCA in Greenwood.

BAXTER YMCA TRI TORNADOES HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE A TRIATHLON? CHALLENGING? MEDIEVAL? TRIUMPHANT? ALL OF THE ABOVE? Triathlons come in several distances from the short to the fast sprint to the Ironman – an all-day gut check of 140.6 miles. No matter the distance, they all start the same – an often chilly plunge into a lake, river or ocean, followed by biking, running and then that finish line, an unabashed, exuberant celebration of months or even years of hard work.

As Tri Tornadoes Coach, Todd Shellenberger says, “Triathlon is not worldchanging, but it can be life-changing.”

The adult and kids Tri Tornadoes teams are based at the Baxter YMCA. Shellenberger started the kids’ team in 2008 and added the adult team to the mix in 2009. The two

teams include a diverse group of athletes from 6 years old to 60-something. It’s often said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but for the Tornadoes, a picture doesn’t begin to tell the whole story.

Everyone on the team looks ordinary – all ages, all sizes, all at different places in their development as athletes – but what they are doing is extraordinary. Time after time, they are facing down fears, overcoming obstacles, stepping out of their comfort zones and chasing their dreams.

What started out as a class to teach would-be triathletes the ropes and promote a healthy lifestyle is accomplishing that goal and more.

For Brenna Macias, whose goal is to complete an Ironman before her 40th birthday, this

is obvious. “The team has taught me that people can do much more than they think they can, and that by working together, we’re able to reach our goals.”

While a triathlon is an individual sport, preparing for it is a group effort. Alan Coppinger joined the team in 2011 to prepare for his first half Ironman race. “The Tornadoes made me feel welcome, and their enthusiasm was electric. We are almost like a second family and have accomplished many great things together.”

What has surprised Shellenberger, a two-time Ironman World Championship finisher, the most about his team? “I was surprised when people started striking up

friendships that extended outside of team practices. They have become friends, good friends that look out for each other. It’s not just an exercise class anymore. We spend a lot of time together working toward our individual goals, suffering through hard workouts, doing something we love. We have become invested in helping each other reach our goals – whether it’s finishing a first triathlon, qualifying for Nationals, living a healthy lifestyle or setting a good example for our kids. We are in this together.”

Jessica Thompson, a Greenwood High School graduate who is attending the

University of Indianapolis, was looking for a way to stay fit and active. “The Tornadoes are great because there are so many different athletic abilities and goals. We all work together to be stronger and faster.”

Somehow the team has become something more – a home, an incubator of dreams, a chance to prove that anything is possible with hard work. Todd notes that for the Tornadoes, “Triathlon isn’t the ultimate objective; it is helping people see how much they can accomplish and helping them grow in their relationship with Christ. We see each other at our best and have, literally,

picked each other off the ground when things don’t go as planned.”

Tornado Mark Rich jumped in with both feet and finished his first half Ironman this year. He enjoys pushing himself during team workouts. “The team spends a lot of time together. It is a fun, encouraging environment. There is room for all skill levels from beginner to expert, young and old – everyone is appreciated.”

When Brenna Macias joined the team, she was nervous. “My first couple of mornings, I wasn’t sure of myself, my fitness level, my

ability to keep up – but everyone made it so easy. Getting up at 4:10 a.m. to train wouldn’t be possible without the support network the Tornadoes provide.

I haven’t done an Ironman, but I have fulfilled a long time dream of competing in an XTerra Triathlon this year. I have been celebrated by the Tornadoes for my small personal victories and have been allowed to celebrate others’ victories – large and small. When the rest of the world thinks I’m crazy for doing what I love, I know the Tornadoes understand.”

Abbie McWilliams said what they all eventually learn: “Anything worth having requires sacrifice and commitment.” It also requires something else – people who believe in you, people who are willing to hold you accountable, lift you up, set the example and be a friend. People like the Tornadoes.

GREENWOOD-A-GLOW This Greenwood tradition includes the lighting of the Christmas tree with Mayor Mark Myers presiding at Madison and Main Street. Entertainment will be provided by a local church and school choirs. Santa makes an appearance at the tree and then proceeds to the library for a chat with all of the children. While at the library, everyone has an opportunity to take a ride in a horse drawn carriage, see a puppet show, visit Santa’s reindeer and get a picture with Santa.
