personal stories about how mental health has affected them.
A little over three years ago, the board of the Johnson Memorial Hospital (JMH) Foundation conducted a needs assessment to determine the most pressing health concerns in the community. The one that topped the list was mental health.
“What you soon realize is that practically everyone has a story, and it’s important to share those stories,” says Tennell, noting that, like any other illness, mental illness does not discriminate. It can affect anyone.
“Mental health continues to be an increasing problem for both children and adults,” says Jennifer Tennell, the Executive Director for the JMH Foundation. Therefore, the staff determined to raise money by hosting a gala at the JW Marriott in downtown Indy with proceeds aiding resources to improve access for behavioral healthcare services in Johnson County. Though initially, the hospital staff considered holding the gala every other year, the inaugural event was so well received that they decided to do it annually. “The initial goal during the first year was to raise $60,000, but we ended up doubling that,” says Tennell, who each year puts together a short video clip of several people sharing their
According to Tennell, mental illness is responsible for $193.2 billion in lost earnings each year. In addition, more than 1.7 million youth with major depressive episodes do not receive treatment. Part of the reason for that is insurance-related. Another issue is the stigma that surrounds the subject. “No one asks to be debilitated by mental illness, but it’s a disease just like any other, and it can take you down,” Tennell says. She recalls a meeting soon after she joined the JMH Foundation in 2015 in which a colleague commented that not that long ago it might take a patient up to nine months to be seen by a mental health specialist. “That timeframe stuck with me because frankly, someone in crisis might not have nine weeks, nine days, nine hours or even nine
minutes,” Tennell says. That’s precisely why last year, through grant funding, the hospital secured Tricia Duncan, a full-time navigator and community health worker at Adult & Child Health Services. Housed at the hospital, Duncan is an immediate, on-site resource to any patient who discloses that they are struggling psychologically. “It’s important to treat the whole person and provide a bridge to services and resources so when a patient goes to a doctor’s appointment and makes a connection with someone who will listen, it can make a difference in his or her life,” Duncan says. “They receive help with overcoming barriers and can leave their doctor’s office with a plan and an appointment already scheduled. Because of integrated health care, more people are getting help and improving their health and well-being.” Tennell notes that previously doctors at JMH would see patients for a physical exam and if a patient mentioned that they were going through a tough time, physicians didn’t know how to respond. Now, however, they can

include Duncan in the conversation who then, in turn, gets them pointed in the right direction so that they can get the help they need. The Third Annual Foundation Gala, which grows larger every year, is a swanky, festive soiree, attended by doctors, administrators and the public and hosted by the Indy Channel’s Raphael Sanchez. This year’s gala will be held on February 23, with reception, cocktails, hors-d’oeuvres and a silent auction beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner, program and a live auction at 6:30 p.m. Dancing with the First Impressions Band begins at 8 p.m. “I’ve never been to a fundraiser where from the first to the last song of the night there are people out on the dance floor,” Tennell says. “Last year we had to double the size of the dance floor because it was so popular.” She says it’s nice to not only see people having a great time but to know that so many are passionate about raising money for mental health. “The subject is still at the forefront,” Tennell says. “There’s good traction with what we’re doing. The need is still there.” The Johnson Memorial Health Foundation is located at 1125 W. Jefferson St. in Franklin. Individual tickets for the gala cost $175, which includes drinks and food. (Black tie optional.) Register online at johnsonmemorialfoundation.org or call 317-346-3703.

Greenwood Band Directors Reflect On State Championship Season Writer / Megan Jefferson Provided Photography
Greenwood’s marching band has a history of success. The students have made it to the state level competition 40 times since its inception in the 1970s. They’ve won 14 times. Band Director, John Morse, and Assistant Director, Steven Fletcher have been leading The Marching Woodmen at Greenwood High School for 11 and 10 years respectively. Morse says that when he was younger, like a lot of kids, he tried out many different activities. Playing instruments
was something he was good at and made him happy. He decided to pursue music education at Ball State University so he could teach kids music. “I think there’s a lot of aspects of music that help kids later in life whether they continue with it or not,” Morse says. “Hard work, commitment, teamwork, leadership skills, agreeing on a common goal and working towards it as a group, all of these aspects really benefit kids in the long run.” Fletcher spent the first 15 years of his career working with many alumni from Greenwood, as a group, they would go to
different schools and assist band directors. He gained invaluable experience and learned how things are done. When the Assistant Band Director opportunity became available at Greenwood High School, it felt like it was meant to be. Starting in June, the 163 band members practice for two weeks and then get a month off. They’re at it again, practicing daily in mid-July through November. They practice in the hot sun. They practice every day after school from 2:45 – 4:40 p.m. When competition season starts, the students continue their rigorous practice schedule and compete every Saturday, spending 12-

14 hours traveling and performing. Practice involves perfecting their program and learning many songs. In the case of this year’s show, the students had to incorporate characterization movements of Charlie Chaplin. Months spent marching in the hot sun and practicing nearly every day paid off. Greenwood High School won the state championship title for the 40th time. This year’s band show was titled, Charlie. Music was played from Charlie Chaplin’s movie, “Modern Times.” The band also wove in some era music, such as The
Entertainer, written by Scott Joplin. Eleven students dressed up like Chaplin and all the performers got into character at times — this helped make the performance exceptional. “One thing that made this show so successful is the amount of responsibility that it put in the hands of the kids,” Fletcher says. “They all portrayed the character of Charlie and they just ate it up. It was so fun to watch, it’s amazing what the kids did with it.” Fletcher says that they always start out the season hoping for the best. They plan and work hard and in the end it’s up to the
kids, they are the ones that sell the show. “You prepare the best you can and really you’re mostly competing with yourself. You are judged on a rubric,” Morse says. “The judges use their experience and the rubric to come up with scores, but at the end of the day, it’s very subjective.” Morse explained that his favorite part of his job is the daily interactions with his students. He says seeing them do well competitively is icing on the cake. Watching them learn, grow, persevere through adversity and rise to the challenge has been rewarding for him. “Our band members have to be good

performers and on top of that they work with other students that need things outside of band,” he says. “Whether it’s help academically or socially or just a ride to and from rehearsal, they really give a lot.” Greenwood residents are proud of all student groups including the marching band. The championship win has been
an exciting victory for the community to celebrate. Both Fletcher and Morse are appreciative of the support. “This would not be possible without the huge backing of the alumni, community and band parents,” Fletcher says. “We just couldn’t do what we do without them.” Marching band season is over, but it
actually gets even busier for the band directors at this point. There are two concert bands, two jazz bands, a basketball prep band, a winter percussion ensemble and three winter guards. They’re all preparing for different upcoming performances. You can visit ghsband.org to learn more about school concerts.

Fans of Cabaret-style theater can now go see a performance that will knock their socks off in Greenwood. To see a show of this quality, you would have to go to Broadway, Chicago or even downtown Indy. But thanks to the vision of one world-class director and some talented local performers, you can see this amazing entertainment close by at Stage to Screen Studios.
Tompkins, who gained his theater experience on the world stage, gained credentials most could only dream about. He discovered his passion for dancing through a photo clipping of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly that he found when he was three. Tompkins showed the clipping to his mother and begged to start dance lessons. Dance teacher Sarah Lee gave Tompkins the foundation that would lead him on a path to Executive Director, Christopher Tompkins, perform in Broadway, Vegas, LA, DC and 56 just opened the studio in August of this year, countries, performing in countless musical establishing Johnson County’s first and only theater productions. His travels even took professional live theater venue, and the cast him to a job as a Cruise Director on a cruise put on their first performance in October. line. Without taking a breath, the cast and crew dove right into November’s production, As exciting as it was for Tompkins to travel The Best of Broadway, then December’s the world delighting countless audiences,
he reached a point where he felt a pull of something calling him home. Though the catalyst bringing him back to Greenwood was the need to be near to help his parents and a special needs sister, Tompkins had been ready for a change for some time. “I’ve been blessed to have led such a storied life, making all the right connections to pave the way for success,” he says. “But I wanted to do something I love that’s about more than just making money because stuff is just stuff.” So, Tompkins returned to Greenwood in the summer of 2018 and got busy building his vision. He reconnected with old friends, including Robert Moore (Head Costume Designer) and sought their help in collaborating to put a theater together.

“My goal is to do something all of us love, working with people we love for the greater good of the community through the development and delivery of performing arts,” he says. Ramp up to open the theater was quick. Tompkins secured the space in August, and the speedy transformation began. The space went from being a church gathering space to a polished, modern venue with hardwood floors, a stage, curtains, highquality lights and sound system and costumes, all in time for October’s opening variety show. “To see this all come together so quickly, I definitely think there was a greater hand in it. It’s like divine intervention,” he says. The Best of Broadway in November was a larger production than October’s. Featuring vignettes from several musicals, the music and choreography were true to form for Tompkins’ style. “I spent time training with the legendary dancer and choreographer, Bob Fosse, so
I’m a Fosse dancer,” he says. Fosse is well known for lending his choreography talents to All that Jazz, A Chorus Line and Chicago among others. The style is what most know as “cabaret” dancing. “Some of the dance moves push the edge of the envelope just a little without going overboard,” he says. “But it’s true to Fosse’s form and true to the musical. When a song has great rhythm, there’s nothing wrong with adding some subtle dance moves for an element of sensuality. I want people to appreciate true artistry of the music and the dancing.” The nearly sold out show incorporated numbers from Cabaret, Oklahoma, Once, Song and Dance, Chicago, Sweeney Todd, Evita, Annie and A Chorus Line. Tompkins was thrilled at the audience response. But there was one audience member he wanted to impress more than anyone else. Tompkins’ dance teacher, Sarah Lee, attended the show.
“It meant so much to me to have her in the audience,” he says. “Who would’ve thought that the first shuffle step she taught me would take me around the world.” As the curtains closed on 2018’s season, Greenwood’s premier music theater started the New Year with big changes for 2019. Starting the first of the year, the theater was officially renamed Stage to Screen Catered Cabaret Theater, giving Indy’s southside its own dinner theater. The catering will be handled by popular Grafton Peek Catering and Bakery, and the menu will change each show, so check the website or call the theater to inquire. The new dinner show offering launches February 7, changing the schedule of the shows. After the dinner show launch, the theater will offer each dinner show for two to four weeks. The shows will run Thursday through Sunday, with a special 12:30 p.m. lunch matinee offered Thursday for special groups, dinner shows on Friday and Saturday nights at 6:30 p.m. and a Sunday brunch show at 1:00 p.m.
14 / GREENWOOD COMMUNITY MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2019 / atGreenwood.com
Guests at the dinner shows will have a choice of two entrees, salad, a seasonal veggie, rice or potato, rolls and, of course, dessert and beverages. Guests can expect to get the royal treatment with food service on china, silver and linens. Seating is available for 66 patrons, keeping the atmosphere intimate. Though the theater’s focus is on the shows, Stage to Screen also offers acting, voice and musical theater lessons. “As the show’s director, my role is to coach, not teach,” Tompkins says. “So, in show auditions, we choose performers who are well rounded and have that foundation. For those looking to build their skills, we offer classes designed to provide hopeful performers with the foundation they need to have what it takes to deliver a show with the highest caliber vocals and dancing.” Greenwood’s hottest new entertainment venue has enjoyed tremendous success in a short span of time, and there’s no doubt plenty more exciting things are on the horizon for the future.
“Our ultimate goal in the future would be to have two or three venues, allowing us to hire a cast that can gain experience as an entertainer on a steady basis,” Tompkins says.
No matter what’s next for Stage to Screen, Tompkins vows to keep the focus on the theater’s mission, Imagine, Inspire and Involve.
There’s no time for a break or to sit back and enjoy the success. Beyond the stage, the theater is taking part in an important cultural mission.
“We imagined and we established Johnson County’s first professional, live theater in downtown Greenwood,” Tompkins says. “Through our performances, we hope to inspire our audiences to develop and share their talent with others. Finally, we want people in our audiences to become involved by volunteering, auditioning for a show or taking a class.”
“The theater is going to be just one part of the planned arts and entertainment district in downtown Greenwood,” Tompkins says. “We’re doing something to bring culture and enrichment through the arts and hopefully unify the community in the process.” Tompkins invites the Johnson County community to come and see a show. “Our theater’s success would not have been possible if not for the support of our loyal patrons and generous sponsors,” he says. “We ask for your continued support so that we can continue providing this incredible entertainment experience to the community.”

Local Greenwood residents gave us their resolutions for the New Year! “As a steward of our community, I’m committed to carrying the torch for my hometown’s founding spirit: Pride and Progress. Pride in what makes Greenwood an exceptional place to live, work and play and progress toward an even brighter future. I look at what we’ve been able to accomplish and appreciate the support of a community that works together to move us forward. And the most exciting part? We’ve only just begun.” - MAYOR MARK W. MYERS “We are blessed to have family across the country but we don’t always get to see everyone. Connecting with our family throughout the year whether by plane, car or FaceTime will be the best gift we can give ourselves in 2019.” - JOHNNY, STEPHANI AND CHRISTOPHER REMETTA & FAMILY “I want to increase my speed by training harder, faster and stronger, so I can make it back to the IHSAA Boys State Track Meet in June. Last year it was an honor to participate in the meet, but this year my goal is to get on the podium, bring home a medal and earn a college scholarship.” - LEX LOGAN
“In 2019, our family will focus on being content with the lives God has given us and not on the popular notion that more is better. Being content will allow us to more fully enjoy the experiences and moments with family and friends that we might otherwise miss.” - BRAD AND TRISHA SMITH & FAMILY

Franciscan Health at Stones Crossing Opens in Greenwood New Campus Offers ExpressCare Walk-in Clinic for Patients Writer / Lynda Hedberg Thies Photographer / Ellie Sophia Photography
Franciscan Health Network completed construction of Franciscan Health at Stones Crossing campus and opened its doors on November 14, 2018. Residents of northwestern Johnson County now have a new and convenient option for their health care needs offering a comprehensive range of services and, in doing so, honored the land where it was built.
been demolished, consolidated all of its patient services to the Indianapolis campus in 2012.
“We are always looking to the future with regards to how we operate and continue to evolve,” says Chris DiGiusto, Vice President of Ambulatory Services for Franciscan Alliance. “Part of that has to do with real estate and where we situate ourselves to the populations that we serve. We obviously did that moving Franciscan Health from Beech Grove which was very land-locked. We had Francis Health Network was formed in 1993 14 acres for a 380,000 square foot hospital and is a nonprofit corporation that unites and there was literally nowhere else that Franciscan Health. Formerly St. Francis we could go from a growth perspective. So Hospital in Beech Grove was dedicated in we consolidated that campus and the south 1914, which meant where they built the Indianapolis campus into one on a property hospital was an important consideration. that had much more room and opportunity Today, Franciscan Health operates hospitals to grow. Now we have expanded to the in Indianapolis, Mooresville and Carmel. Morgan County area with our ambulatory The Beech Grove facility, which has since
services. We have always been part of the Johnson County community.” As they were looking to expand, James Callaghan, MD, president and CEO for Franciscan Health Central Indiana noted that “White River Township in Johnson County was chosen because of the dynamic growth in recent years.” The property was sold to Franciscan by the Swartz family. According to Scott Swartz, the fifth generation owner, “Five generations have farmed on this property, the purchased site of the new facility.” The land was purchased at the beginning of the Great Depression by the grandparents of Scott Swartz. “My father Jack, brother Todd and I have been a part of this community our entire

lives,” he says. “Having seen dramatic change and growth in Stones Crossing, Greenwood and Johnson County, it was important to us as a family to be sensitive and diligent in the way this farm would be developed. We are so blessed that the opportunity was brought forward of working with the gifted and caring professionals of Franciscan Health Indianapolis and the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration. Our family is blessed to know that for many generations forward, this facility and the faith-based care it will provide to the community will only grow with guidance that Franciscan Health can provide.” “This was the perfect location with a lot of development going on in the area as well as a central location between our Mooresville
and the Indianapolis locations,” DiGiusto adds. “With continued growth being the focus, they have plenty of room to grow and expand to add services as well. We have about 15 percent of the Stones Crossing complex awaiting further development.” Among the services, patients will find at the three-story Franciscan Health at Stones Crossing complex is family, pediatric and internal medicine physician practices, laboratory and imaging services, mammography, sports medicine, orthopedic care, physical therapy, rehabilitation services and a medical spa which includes massage therapy, body sculpting and hydra-facial services. Another major component that Franciscan Health Care at Stones Crossing is offering
is Franciscan ExpressCare. In addition to treatment of minor illnesses and injuries, this urgent care clinic will offer a fullservice occupational medicine clinic. X-ray and lab services, school, sports and camp physical, electrocardiograms, breathing treatments, employment and insurance physicals, drug and alcohol screenings, flu and tetanus shots and immunization clinics. “We always knew we wanted something that was a walk-in,” DiGiusto says. “We were exploring a free-standing emergency room or a micro-hospital with an emergency room, but we decided that residents needed a walk-in hospital where people don’t need an appointment or have a wait. So, we decided to offer urgent care as a walk-in service. We have been in the urgent care business for more than 10 years
now in Central Indiana but we have been in the urgent care business in northern and western Indiana for three decades.” The model is similar to other urgent care facilities that are open 10-12 hours a day except Franciscan Health at Stones Crossing will be open 18 hours a day. It is important to note that Franciscan Health merged with Immediate Care Centers and
they have been in that model since the 1950s. DiGiusto was quick to point out that “our busiest time is when everyone else closed at 8 p.m., so we knew the need was definitely there because we are packed from 8-11p.m. every night. This is the next best option without having to go to an ER.” Franciscan Health at Stones Crossing is located at 1703 W. Stones Crossing Road
and is open every day from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. No appointments are necessary and most insurance and managed care plans are covered at all Franciscan ExpressCare Centers in Beech Grove, Greenwood and downtown locations. For more information, visit franciscanhealth.org.
