like hidden gems. You can find everything from coffee to realtors to hairdressers.

When walking inside the doors of The Nest, also known as the former Jonathan Byrd’s Cafeteria, the restaurant turned business center just off of the I-65 Greenwood exit amazes many people due to it’s complete remodel. The Nest Event Center takes up most of the building, but the goal of the space wasn’t just to create an area to hold weddings and parties. It’s also a hub where community and business are tied together.

Each business comes together to create a wholesome community. A common thread through all the business is that they all know each other — working to support each other in their unique ventures. Owners and renovators of the building, Randy and Julie Faulkner, even have an office for their business Faulkner Restorations at the location.

Within The Nest, many businesses are

“We’re bringing back the small-town feel of business,” says Alison Giebler, co-

owner of BayBerry Spa. Co-owners Giebler and Jennifer Hagner created BayBerry, a high-end hometown spa, to give the community specialized massage therapy along with delicious body treatments. From the luxurious and natural body products they use to the relaxed environment of each of their four rooms, there is no doubt you’ll find tranquillity. “We take time to get to know our clients and hear their needs,” Giebler says.

storytelling.

Instead of doing the same massage on everyone, Bayberry Spa’s goal is to get to know their clients, customizing every massage to the person. “Everybody flocks to wholeness, they want their product to mean something,” says Sara Redmon, co-owner of Materia Medica. “Everybody brings in good energy and wants to create a connection with people.” With an herbal room to create customized natural remedies and skincare, Materia Medica takes a wholistic and non-conventional approach to their waxing, tanning and derma-planing, health coaching and makeup. Ablog Cinema is another business that has created a network with the other owners inside The Nest and the local community. They want to create a close connection with the people in the neighborhood through videography

“We [the businesses in The Nest] genuinely care about each other and the success of each other,” says AJ Ablog, owner of Ablog Cinema. “We care about our community.” Even Brickhouse Coffee Co. provides a space for the community to come in and enjoy the growing passion for coffee and the coffee culture. With the owners, Jared and Lora Stayton, working in the roastery and the coffee house with their two daughters, the aroma of family and intentional interaction with the local community is prevalent. The selling point of the building for Bruce and Dee Richardson, the owners of Bruce Richardson Realty, was the chapel inside the building. Not only can you have a full wedding with the Nest Event Center, but business owners and clients have access to the chapel where prayer and meditation are welcome.

“We sensed the peace of the Lord was going to be in this place because of their [Randy and Julie Faulkner’s] leadership,” Richardson says. Other businesses are in the building as well, such as The Station Hair Parlor, Amp/Tech, Faulkner Restoration, and Keystone Chiropractic, Real Estate Mortgage Network, and The Nest Event Center. Each is an intrinsic blend of hometown spirit and professional enthusiasm. All in all, the cultivated authenticity of the shops at The Nest is the reflection of the people behind the businesses. They are kind, genuine and eager to bring wholesome products to the community. “We all try to help each other and encourage each other in our business,” Giebler says. “We’re excited to be here.” The Nest is located at 400 Byrd Way in Greenwood.

Charity Riders 10th Annual Goin’ to the Dogs Motorcycle Ride Returns September 21 Benefitting the Johnson County Animal Shelter

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

Ten years ago, Tom Bland’s good friends, Mike and Cindy Woods, tragically lost their teenage daughter, Sara, in a car accident. “I had known Sara ever since she was a baby,” Bland says. “She had a love for animals and would always bring home strays to her parents who would find forever homes for them.” After the accident, Bland wanted to do something to honor Sara’s memory so he thought it would be great to raise money for the Johnson County Animal Shelter — specifically a fund that was earmarked to go towards the adoption of furry friends. “Sara’s Fund” goes toward spaying and neutering dogs and cats as well as paying for all of their shots. Bland rallied his group of motorcycle friends, located all over Johnson County. The “Charity Riders,” as they call themselves, come together several times a year to organize motorcycle rides for various causes. In the last decade, Bland has spearheaded rides that have raised more than $400,000 for various organizations. Following Sara’s passing, Bland arranged an annual ride named “Goin’ to the Dogs” where riders pay $20 per bike and $10 per passenger. In the past 10 years, they’ve raised more than $60,000. “In doing this, it took the Johnson County Animal Shelter to the top in the nation on animal adoptions,” Bland says. In addition to covering spaying and neutering costs, these funds are used to purchase medical supplies and provide veterinary care to injured or sick animals. “It’s great because if, say, a dog or cat gets hit by a car and is seriously injured, if the owner can’t afford treatment, rather than putting the animal down, directors take money out of Sara’s Fund to treat it,” says Bland who notes that since they started the fund, no animals have been euthanized at the shelter. The ride, which typically attracts between 150250 riders, originally took place in July, but the weather was too scorching hot so they moved it to September. This year’s ride will be on Saturday, September 21—rain or shine. “I remember when we did this ride on a burning hot

day in 2012. It was 105 degrees, like riding through an oven,” Bland says. “Another year it was pouring down rain, but we kept going.” Breakfast is served at 8 a.m. Registration opens at 10 a.m. at Whit’s Inn in Whiteland. The ride begins at noon and will go through Brown County and back up, concluding at Nailers Brewery around 4 p.m. Riders can then enjoy Brewfest for live music, refreshing beverages, tasty food, raffles and drawings. Anyone participating or attending the event qualifies to adopt a pet from the Johnson County Shelter for half of the standard adoption fee. Bland has also organized fundraising rides for other organizations that are near and dear to his heart. For instance, he helped raise money for Proctor Park in New Whiteland, a park designed to honor those individuals who have protected the community and nation through their service in armed service, law enforcement, fire protection and emergency services. “There was a gold star recipient and New Whiteland resident named Joey Proctor who was killed in Iraq. He died saving 300 peoples’ lives,” Bland says. “The town donated land to build a military park in honor of the fallen heroes.” The National Guard got involved. The Boy Scouts got involved. And so did the Charity Riders. Today, the Madison Street Social Club and the Shelbyville Eagle Riders are also highly involved with the event. The first year they dedicated the park with a memorial to honor all the fallen heroes we have lost since 9/11. The next year, Bland organized a ride dedicated to the Vietnam vets. Last year, they dedicated a wall to World War II veterans in Indianapolis. Next, they’re getting ready to dedicate a Korean memorial. “I’m very proud to see such wonderful results from these rides,” Bland says. “I love riding motorcycles with my friends for a good cause.” Bland’s daughter, Tiffany Woods, couldn’t be prouder of her father’s philanthropic spirit. “It’s the most interesting thing to see a big group of biker men who are actually guys with enormous hearts and a passion for giving back to the community,” she says. To make a donation to Sara’s Fund, make checks payable to MSSC and Sara’s Fund in the memo and mail to Johnson County Animal Control, c/o Michael Delp, 2160 Graham Rd., Franklin, IN 46131. atGreenwood.com / SEPTEMBER 2019 / GREENWOOD MAGAZINE / 13

goal was six to eight homes, and we’ve got some great, iconic properties that folks can see. The community really responded after we put out our Facebook post and got some good buzz going.”

“Old Town Greenwood is growing a lot, and there are so many great historic homes here,” says Craig DeBoor, co-organizer and board member with Restore Old Town Greenwood, Inc. (ROTG). “Franklin, Meridian Kessler and other places do great home tours, and we thought it would be neat to showcase the great historic homes in our community. We also hope that it brings more traffic into Old Town Greenwood in the hopes that it drives people to the small businesses here.”

And there will be plenty of history to experience. The oldest property included in the tour dates back almost 200 years. Its original home was constructed in 1823, and the current house was built 49 years later, just seven years after the Civil War.

As event organizers, DeBoor and his ROTG colleagues initially sent out a post on the group’s Facebook page requesting applications from anyone interested in featuring their home for the tour and followed up with site visits to each home to make their decisions on which homes to include. “It was all by application only — we didn’t have to go door-to-door and ask homeowners if they wanted to get involved,” DeBoor says. “Our

“That property was one of the first 150-acre sections given by the governor to settlers for development in 1823 and 1824 in Johnson County,” DeBoor says. “I don’t know of any properties around here that are older than that. The craftsmanship on these homes is something I think people will appreciate being able to see.” Attendees can register and purchase tickets online and pick up wristbands on the morning of the one-day event along with a map and a brochure full of info on each historic home. Fifty volunteers will be spread amongst the homes to answer questions and provide additional information throughout the day.

“It’s self-guided, so people can come and go as they please once they pick up their wristbands and spend as much time in each home as they like,” DeBoor explains. “The brochures will also feature information about small businesses here like the restaurants and bars and fun things to do here. We’re hoping this will generate interest from locals and from those coming from outside Greenwood.” Founded in 2011, Restore Old Town Greenwood, Inc. is a volunteer-based organization dedicated to the historic preservation and revitalization of Old Town Greenwood and promotion of local businesses. The group partnered with the City of Greenwood to complete restorations on 22 building facades in Old Town Greenwood two years ago. “We’re really trying to create a great community feel with this event and bring people here not only to see the great homes but discover the great restaurants, boutique stores and antique shops here too,” DeBoor says. “The mayor said everywhere he goes, he talks about Old Town Greenwood and the community that we have here. The pride of ownership is great here and being able to expose that is great. We want to show off that we have some great homes and that this is a great place to live, work and play.” For event announcements and updates, visit facebook.com/RestoreGreenwood. SPREADING THEIR WINGS Ale Emporium Brings AwardWinning Wings, Pizza to New Greenwood Location Writer / Megan Stephens Photographer / JWcreative.indy

When Ale Emporium introduced their wings, pizza and brews to sports fanatics in Fishers last March, they opened their doors to a packed crowd that just had their dreams come true. After a year of success in the suburbs, Co-Owners Scott Baun, Tony Kwiatkowski and Herman Perryman have opened a third location in Greenwood this July. This time, the anticipation was even higher. Located at County Line Road and Emerson Avenue, the former Fireside Brewhouse has transformed into a multiplex tavern with an astounding 82 TVs which create video walls that flank the pub on all sides. Although that number is a little shallow compared to the 137 TVs that the Castleton flagship location hosts, there is no doubt that wherever you turn, you’ll have your head in the game. Ale Emporium has been an Indianapolis landmark since 1982 when Marc Luros established the Castleton location. Herman Perryman joined the team in the late ‘80s and so did daughter and son-in-law Shannon and Scott Baun in the ‘90s. Over the decades, sports fans who flood the bar have witnessed Bobby Knight’s chair toss in 1985, Indianapolis’ Super Bowl XLVI in 2012, and other iconic games. “We liked the Greenwood area because it’s a really strong sports community,” Kwiatkowski says. “There are around six high schools within five miles, so bringing the family atmosphere to the Southside is the goal.” If supporting the local high school sports, as well as the professional sports is the plan, then Ale Emporium is accomplishing it fantastically. Within the restaurant, the decor consists of jerseys from the local high school’s sports teams in the family section — like Greenwood, Whiteland, Center Grove, Perry Meridian, Franklin Central, Southport and Roncalli. No matter where you sit, you’ll feel surrounded by regional pride. Construction started in December, and since then, massive changes to the original building have occurred. 18 / GREENWOOD MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / atGreenwood.com

“Everything is brand new,” Baun says. “The only two things that are original are one of the walk-in freezers and one of the range hoods.” The aesthetic of the pub mimics the other two locations: rich and plentiful. Dark wood shiplap shimmies up to brick walls decked with neon signs. The ceiling is a combination of exposed beams and embossed tin tile. Adding to the richness, sliding windows facing toward the new extended patio, which seats 100, will fold back accordion-style so those who sit outside can experience the indoor energy.

NLF Sundays are definitely the busiest, with tables maxed out while all eyes are watching the home team catch the winning score. But booze, wings and sports games are not the only thing you can expect at Ale Emporium. Local bands have been scheduled out for the year to play and entertain every night of the week including My Yellow Rickshaw, The Doo!, Stella Luna and the Satellites and The Why Store.

The widely-known menu is keeping fans hooked. The famous Hermanaki Wings, created by Perryman himself, are still no less than top-notch —winning awards like Best Wings by Nuvo and The Indy A-List since 2013, and, not long ago, named the No. 1 Best Place for Wings in Indiana by BuzzFeed. Everything is homemade from the iconic Honest Pizza down to the blue cheese and ranch sauce. More than 100 domestic and imported beers are also available for the over-21 game-watchers.

“Being a local brand, we like to bring in the local community,” Kwiatkowski says. “[Greenwood sports fans] love their Pacers, Colts and IU Basketball. What better side of town to bring together a community of sports fans than Greenwood.” Ale Emporium Greenwood is located at 997 E County Line Rd. For more information, call 317-300-4298 or visit them online at ale-emporium.com.

“All the food is fresh. The only items we keep frozen are the ice cream and tenders” Baun says.
