PUBLISHER’S WELCOME Robotics is hot! A online search for “high school robotics clubs in USA” returns over 21 million results. The international FIRST Robotics Competition pits 2,900 teams with roughly 73,000 students from 19 countries against one another, competing for over $20 million in college scholarships. National Robotics Week saw multiple events staged in all 50 states earlier this year. This is the incubator for tomorrow’s engineers and scientists.

It’s a sad fact that girls as young as 8 years old are concerned about their body image. Perhaps they think they are too skinny or, more likely, too fat. These are concerns that should not vex any 8 year old, but unfortunately, these issues often follow these girls well into their adolescence. In this month’s Greenwood Health Kick, Alicia Wettrick digs into this topic and offers some tips on what can be done to help these young girls.

The cover story this month features one of our outstanding local robotics clubs: Cornerstone Robotics. Being designed for homeschooled students makes Cornerstone unique. However, its collection of over 100 awards, five earned at World Championship events, makes the club outstanding. Katie Burrell brings you this story about these special Greenwood area students.

Now entering its seventh year of competition, Cornerstone Robotics has grown from being a team of 10 students to nine teams with more than 40 students. The teams range in age from elementary to high school and are located in the Greenwood, Lawrence and Southport areas. In a world that focuses on sports and arts as extracurricular activities, seeing kids who haven’t found their passion yet find it in robotics is very rewarding. This program can be lifechanging for students by exposing them to science and technology in a fun and exciting way.

GIRLS LOOK BEYOND BODY IMAGE

Have you ever gone out of the house without your makeup on and been asked things like, “Are you not feeling well today?” or “You look tired today”? I have! Then I feel embarrassed that somehow I’m “offending” others with my makeup-free face. Wait. That is ridiculous. Why do I feel embarrassed?

The female body image (pretty and thin) is ubiquitous throughout our culture. Women feel pressured by media and peers to keep up with the latest style, make-up, hair and thinness. Unfortunately, we listen to them, and it starts young.

• Body image conflicts lead to eating disorders, low self-esteem and depression.

WHICH CAME FIRST, THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG?

The above statistics have been increasing since the 1960s when Twiggy, an ultra-thin supermodel, became famous, setting off the thinness craze. And since then, there is now a plethora of products, pills and diets out there to make you prettier and thinner.

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM INSPIRING WOMEN

Amy Jo Clark aka “Daisy” from the WIBC radio show “Chicks on the Right” has noted that unlike male-hosted political talk shows, her and “Mock” (her radio co-hostess) are frequently attacked on the Internet for their appearances in hopes to destroy their confidences, but these people do not shake her.

“It is better to be smart than to be beautiful. It is better to be funny than pretty.” Amy goes on to say, “The body is a shell for your soul. The soul is what matters.”

She is also a parent and feels the key to helping her daughter have a positive body image is communication. Conversations about having a good character and how you treat others are what is important.

DeVyn Barker, a Greenwood High School graduate and college softball player, at one time owned a fitness gym for young girls in Indianapolis. She worked with them on physical training to improve athletic skills and fitness. DeVyn was shocked when listening to her young clients talk about their bodies.

“I’m having as young as 8 and 9-year-old girls tell me they want to train with me to be skinny,” she said. “No, I will not make you ‘skinny.’ I will teach you a healthy lifestyle in which to live by. I will teach you strength in women is admirable physically and emotionally. Shame on this world that has made the visual appearance all these girls see! There is beauty in good character, kindness and passionate hearts. … Compliment her character as her true beauty!”

THREE TIPS: LISTEN, TALK, RESOURCES

1) Listen to girls carefully. Notice the clues. If they ask about weight loss methods, a diet their friend is on or make a subtle negative comment about their body, those are good hints. Seize that time to discuss healthy weight, peers and media influences.

Overall, I feel the image that girls are striving for is the fault of us women, not just media. We are the ones that participate. I am guilty of not feeling polished or fully presentable to the world unless my make-up is on.

Understanding a balance is best. Unfortunately, a young girl places her identity and meaning on a certain idea of being beautiful. This is stressful to many young girls. But I think women can change this ideal beauty girl culture by conversation and example.

ESTATE PLANNING MADE SIMPLE ROBERT K. JOHNSON ATTORNEY

Many of us procrastinate, especially when it comes to uncomfortable situations. Greenwood resident Robert Johnson understands this too well as an attorney who focuses in estate planning. To illustrate, Johnson remembers a client and friend who called the night before his surgery. The request? He wanted his will and health-related documents in order. That trip to the hospital reinforced for Johnson the importance of planning and personal attention in preparing for incapacitation or death.

began asking him for help in estate planning a decade ago, Johnson discovered he enjoyed working personally with clients. However, he didn’t leave journalism completely. Johnson currently writes a twiceweekly sports column for the Daily Journal. Since 1992, Johnson and his wife, Kathy, have called Greenwood home.

That is what is different about this attorney. He specializes in creating a personal estate plan on your schedule and with your needs as the focus. Estate planning can be daunting with specific consideration to clients’ personal needs. Johnson seeks to simplify and work closely with each individual and family. Greenwood area residents Angie and Mickey McDaniel called Johnson to draft an estate plan. “Bob did an exceptional job explaining everything and giving us much comfort,” Mickey said. Angie added that Johnson’s informal meeting style demystified the process, especially in discussing the importance to their children. “It was very simple. He sat down and spoke with us and answered all our questions,” she said.

His goal in estate planning is to not only make it specific to his clients’ needs but also to make it simple. For example, the fixed price package of $975 for a couple includes two wills, powers of attorney (POA), living wills and health care POAs along with initial consultation and answering questions during the process. “What’s different about this is I can meet clients at their convenience wherever and whenever they choose,” said Johnson. “If you need to meet Saturday morning at your kitchen table, we’ll make it work.” This is all about meeting clients’ needs on their schedule with an understandable process and an affordable fee.

Johnson recommends reviewing an estate plan every 10 years or after defining life events such as births of children or grandchildren, changes in assets, or the death of a spouse. Clients often choose to create education trusts for their grandchildren or change how and when children inherit assets.

“We write estate plans in such a way that provides for some of these changes. However, we can’t always anticipate the curve balls that life throws at us so we plan with an eye to the future,” said Johnson.

Johnson began his career as a journalist working for the Evansville Courier & Press before pursuing a law degree from Indiana University at Indianapolis. His expertise became utility law, but when friends

Support from the local businesses is essential in sustaining organizations like DREAM Alive, and the business partners that support DREAM Alive engage because they share a philosophy with the

organization that the community’s youth is a community’s future. For example, Bastian Solutions will hire students from within the DREAM Alive program and place them in jobs within their corporation.

In addition to the business community’s support, the DREAM Alive organization recognizes the importance of having positive mentors on board to work with and help raise up their scholars.

An annual event since 2004, Wishing on Stars was first hosted by former Indianapolis Colts Tight End Marcus Pollard. Fellow Colts players, Indiana Pacers, Indy 500 drivers and other local celebrities are expected to attend the event.

Dwayne Allen, Player Executive for DREAM Alive, has stepped into a leadership role within the organization to assist with Glenn’s mission. Allen, tight end for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts, is making an impact in the lives of Indianapolis at-risk youth. Allen serves not only as the professional face of the organization but also participates in program development and implementation.

“I grew up in the inner city of Fayetteville, North Carolina,” Allen said. “My story resonates so well with the children that we impact at DREAM Alive. I spend every opportunity that I get to spend with our kids. I see so much of myself in each and every one of them. I didn’t have anyone to look up to or have someone who looked like me, who came from similar situations as me, trying to inspire me. That is why I am passionate about wanting the kids to want more in their lives.

“I want them to understand that regardless of where you come from, how you were raised or who you were raised by, you can’t allow your circumstances to dictate who you who are or who you want to be. That’s what our mission is all about. We educate the kids and provide resources and knowledge, so that they can go and be successful in their lives.”

“By them opening their doors to our programs so that we can take the kids to different businesses around Indianapolis and around the state, we can expose the kids to things outside of the inner city. Little by little, this begins to break down the barriers of their world. We take them for walks around university campuses or to a business like WTHR or a military base to expose them,so that they can begin to dream bigger.

“As we continue to grow and obtain more funding, we can expand our reach and develop a model that is replicable in cities throughout the country. Our goal is to replicate the programs in all NFL host cities and team up with players from those teams who will then engage their local school corporations.

“Here in Indianapolis, we want to expand in all IPS schools and surrounding areas, so that we can serve the underserved and fill in the gaps, so that no child falls in between. We want to see all children have opportunities to resources that they need to become successful adults. Ultimately, that is how it should be.”

How could a pill created to ease your pain be the very thing bringing you to your deathbed? Over the past year and a half, Indiana has endured a massive epidemic in opioid (narcotic) drug addiction. This addiction can grow out of a normal prescription to pain pills into a patient begging his or her doctor for more medication.

In the late ‘90s and early 2000s, doctors were quick to prescribe these kinds of pills.

However, after noticing a trend in addiction, strict prescription initiatives were put into place to counteract this issue.

ACCIDENTAL ADDICTION TO ACCIDENTAL DEATH?

What feeds an unintentional opioid addiction other than more pills? Heroin. The heroin cartels know a person addicted to pain pills gets the same rush but for 1/3 the cost.

As soon as the medical industry started monitoring the opioids, the floodgates opened, and the heroin epidemic began.

In the 1970s when heroin started making a presence, its potency was only five percent, but now, it is anywhere from 50 to 80 percent.

Tara Treatment Center located in Franklin, Indiana, is a not-for-profit dedicated to the long-term treatment of those suffering with alcohol and/or drug addictions. The Tara Treatment Center has noticed a huge influx in the past year of those seeking treatment for a narcotic addition, reaching 42 percent of their clientele.

Dancing with the Johnson County Stars will make dreams come true for seven area nonprofits and their fearless dancers. Three of these dancers live right here in the Center Grove area.

Michelle is a lifelong Southsider. Her passion is being able to help people in all aspects of their journey to health.

These dancers learned several dances through a partnership with Barbara Leininger at Arthur Murray Studio and will perform them at the Historic Artcraft Theatre on September 25 and 26.

I am not one to get in front of big crowds, so this experience is really getting me outside my comfort zone, but it is for a wonderful cause."

Although you might think the ultimate goal is to be the best dancer and score a "10" the night of competition, there is a special twist to this event brilliantly orchestrated by civic leader Barb Miller. You see, the real winner is the agency that is able to raise the most money. Collectively, the goal this year is to raise $200,000 with all agencies combined.

Last year, the goal was $100,000, and the event raised $180,000.

It’s a friendly competition between agencies to see what unique fundraising events they create and execute leading up to the big dance competition and how many tickets to the event they can sell.

Some of the fundraising activities this year include hosting a Poker Run motorcycle ride, a Family Farm day, a Canvas for a Cause night, loyalty cards to a restaurant and invitation-only dance parties.

The increase in fundraising activities led to a new award this year. The Most Valuable Dancer trophy will go to the dancer who raises the most money for his or her agency. That will join the Judge’s Choice Award given Friday and Saturday nights to the best dancer and the coveted Mirrored Ball Award to the agency that raises the most money.

This year, Friday night (September 25) is family-friendly with no alcohol sold. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for those under 18.

Saturday night (September 26), tickets are $30 and include a beer, a wine or popcorn/soda. They will present the Judge’s Choice award for Friday’s performance, and they will present three awards for Saturday night: Judge’s Choice award for best dancer, Most Valuable Dancer and the Mirrored Ball Award. Judges for Saturday will be Mark Myers, Mayor of Greenwood; Joe McGuinness, Mayor of Franklin; Chris Cosner of the Daily Journal and Janette Koon of Waddell & Reed.

Greenwood Mayor Mark Myer signed a proclamation on July 8, 2015, in recognition of the city’s heroes. The proclamation came in response to the national program, Homes for Heroes (HFH), coming to the city, which offers savings for local heroes who want to buy, sell or refinance a home.

The program started after the nation experienced the harrowing effects of 9/11. Among the cement rubble where once stood the

Twin Towers, heroes emerged — men and women who selflessly serve their city every day.

As the media captured these selfless acts, a family of realtors in Minneapolis desired to thank the heroes of their community in a special way. Their idea proposed to give back to heroes a 25 percent discount on realtor commission fees and a $500 reduction from lending companies. Furthermore, the plan called for title companies to discount closing fees by $100 and inspectors deduct their inspection fees by various percentages. The family’s idea spread,

The national program recognizes heroes who are active or retired in the military (including members of the reserve), law enforcement, firefighters, first responders, healthcare workers, clergy, medical staff and any member of a school corporation.

Various companies go further by naming other heroes to their discount lists. For instance, Melissa Trahan of Keller Williams also adds veterinarians to her list of heroes. “When one of my clients qualifies as a hero in this program, I gratefully take 25 percent off my commission fee and guide them to others who can discount their prices as well.”

As a client of Trahan, Marc Fishburn recently sold his old home and bought a newer one. As a Retired Army Infantryman, Staff Sgt. Fishburn qualified for the HFH discounts. “It was the first time I got a check back at a closing,” said Fishburn, chuckling.

“In all seriousness though, it was an easy process. … I was able to remodel my new kitchen with the money from the check.”

W

hen Jay Miller founded Cornerstone Robotics in 2007, he hoped to reach into the homeschooling community and provide a unique extracurricular activity for students. Since then, his reach has expanded into more than his home-based team can serve.

IGNITING A SPARK FOR LEARNING

Now entering its seventh year of competition, Cornerstone Robotics has grown from being a team of 10 students to nine teams with more than 40 students. The teams range in age from elementary to high school and are located in the Greenwood, Lawrence and Southport areas.

The sport requires the team to work together to build a robot that will go on to compete against other robots. At the competitions, robots play games and work to score points by picking up balls and placing them in goals. They can even earn additional points by lifting up the competition. Matches take place over a 2:15 period.

Miller’s interest in this team-building, problem-solving, mechanical engineering sport began when his oldest son — who was homeschooled at the time — began participating in Robotics on the Center Grove team. Miller acted as a mentor for the team.

In a world that focuses on sports and arts as extracurricular activities, “Seeing kids who haven’t found their passion yet find it in robotics is very rewarding,” he said.

It was watching that same discovery in his son that ignited Miller’s own passion for the sport. The eldest Miller child dove into Robotics and led the way for his three siblings. With Robotics growing in popularity over the years, the township school limited participation to CG students only, and the Millers took off on their own to serve the homeschool community.

Miller’s son is now in college, but Jay says he “has years ahead of him.”

With another son in high school, a daughter in middle school and a son in elementary school, he is also working on developing more teams for elementary and collegiate levels. While he can’t coach all of the teams alone, he said that he and the other coaches bring the teams together and guide one another whenever possible.

THE BLUEPRINTS

A Robotics season begins in August and runs through mid-April.

Miller’s team meets for three hours every Wednesday night in his home.

Depending on the age of the students, they classify as VEX or VEX IQ. The IQ team consists of younger, elementary-aged students with no robotics experience. The VEX IQ robots snap together like advanced Legos. Often, the older VEX teams mentor the younger teams.

“For the first 10 weeks, we spend time evaluating what the game is this year,” Miller said. “We tear the game apart, look at different strategies for the game and look at different designs and prototype parts.” And, of course, they build a robot.

It’s after the first competition in November, Miller said, that the fun really begins. The students come back and brainstorm. They document things that go on during the competition, consider what worked for other teams and sometimes completely tear the robot apart to rebuild.

“They get a hands-on experience by doing something fun,” Miller said.

“They don’t even realize they are learning.”

According to the Cornerstone website, “This program can be lifechanging for students by exposing them to science and technology in a fun and exciting way. Students have fun together as they learn engineering principles, problem-solving skills, teamwork and how to compete in a God-honoring manner. It also helps them to learn leadership, teamwork and public speaking skills.”

LIKE A WELL-OILED MACHINE

As a software engineer himself, Miller said that he is proud of what the kids have accomplished. And it’s not even the science and mathematics problem-solving skills that he refers to. It’s the way they all come together and work as a team.

Although the nine teams range in age and location, they come together to scrimmage and bounce ideas off one another. He stresses that the students don’t compete to win at any cost; rather, they represent the sport and their teams well.

Thanks to generous sponsors, five of the teams were recently able to attend the World Championship and win the World Championship Teamwork Award for the second year in a row. The teams combined have more than 85 awards at local competitions, nine awards at the Indiana State Championship, seven awards at the U.S. National Championship and five awards at the World Championship events.

Because of the increasing popularity of the sport, Miller said that the teams are full, but openings occasionally come up, and he hopes to grow even more with the help of new mentors.

After interviewing four ambitious interns here in the Johnson County area, as an intern myself, I have come to the conclusion that without networking, our internships would have been tremendously harder to come by.

Jessie is an upcoming junior at Taylor University majoring in Public Relations and minoring in Management. She hopes to one day become a Director of PR and Marketing at a corporate level.

Jessie acquired her internship at Tilson because her school advisor knew Mr. Tilson and thought the job would be a perfect fit.

LINDSEY MORGAN Lindsey will be finishing up her senior year at IU Bloomington. She is majoring in Human Biology and gearing up to apply to med school. Her internship at the Greater Greenwood Chamber and Johnson County Community Foundation arose out of prior work involvement.

Working directly under Tilson’s PR and Marketing Director has opened up a slew of opportunities for Jessie. She has been able to work with a PR agency during the time of her internship, which is where she could see herself working once graduating.

Emily is approaching her third but final year at Franklin College. Her major is PR with a minor in Leadership. Emily was aware of the internship position for the Greater Greenwood Chamber and Johnson County Community Foundation through relationships she built in previous jobs.

Through her internship, Lindsey has built connections with people in the field of optometry that could potentially help during her ambitious endeavor to becoming a future optometrist.

ME (HANNAH STURM) I am a junior at IU Bloomington seeking a major in PR and Advertising with a minor in Management. After thinking strategically about who I knew in the field in which I wanted to intern, I landed an internship at Spotlight Strategies.

Emily loves her internship as a member services coordinator and part-time position as a Johnson County Court House assistant, but ultimately, she could see herself working in the field of publication design.

My experience this summer has been critical to my learning and growth as a young business professional. In the future, I aspire to be a Director of Marketing and Communications or own my own business.

A neat aspect binding each of us ladies together is our companies’ involvement with the Greater Greenwood Chamber. Of course, Lindsey and Emily work directly for the Chamber, but Tilson, Spotlight Strategies, Johnson County Community Foundation and the Center Grove and Greenwood Community Magazines are all members.

Emily says the sole purpose of the Chamber is "when one succeeds, we all succeed." Each of us in some way or another described our respective companies’ cultures to coincide with that purpose. All of us have a great deal of respect and appreciation for our companies’ conscious effort to give back and be involved with the community.

Every intern had nothing but praise about their supervisors and coworkers. A common misperception among us was that going into the job with a lack of experience in the field would cause a difficult learning curve. All of us felt humbled when taking their internships but grateful for the opportunity. Alecia commented, "I thought it would be difficult getting the hang of what I would need to do within a few short months, but I was able to catch on quickly."

In the end, we were all impressed with our work results and how much guidance the supervisors provided. We agreed that being given the chance to work in a professional environment has built our confidences and exposed us to the unspoken rules of the workforce such as proper email and meeting etiquette along with knowing when it was time to swallow our pride and ask for help.

With the assistance of patient and attentive supervisors, each intern agreed that after a week or so, we felt well certified to accomplish the tasks asked. We would like to express gratitude to our managers for taking the time out of their busy schedules to help them grow as young professionals.

At the end of our wonderful experience, we were able to meet together at The Revery located in downtown Greenwood. The food was wonderful, and the company was even better. Being around young professionals with a like-minded passion for the future is encouraging and exhilarating!

Imagine if you had to meet your dad after going 13 years of your life never knowing who he was? Or experiencing at age 16 a parent abandoning your family, leaving behind no food or money? Youths’ brains are not yet mature enough to know how to appropriately process their conflicted emotional states in such situations. Therefore, they often lash out, and some participate in juvenile crimes.

GUIDING YOUTH

Youth Connections provides services for youth 18 years and younger susceptible to juvenile delinquent behaviors including theft, drug abuse and modest assault. They found after-school programs to be an effective way to teach kids how to deal with hectic life situations in a constructive way. Different programs such as Jumpstart Group Mentoring and Project Safe Place help kids manage their emotions in appropriate ways and practice good study/work habits.

Pay It Forward Johnson County (PITJC) funds allowed Youth Connections to expand their Safe Place program into more schools. In 2014, the program message reached over 15,859 youth and adults, which resulted in assisting 83 youth through the Safe Place helpline. Initiatives for this program include healthy relationships, education on substance abuse and bullying awareness.

Executive Director Tom Bingham says, "I definitely would like to reach out and say how important the dollars from PIFJC were to Youth Connections and the families they serve. I encourage you to support Pay It Forward Johnson County. It’s a great organization serving several not-for-profits here in our area."

Our Johnson County Habitat for Humanity affiliate has been working diligently over the past few years to turn the dream of creating a local ReStore into a reality. Executive Director LeeAnn Wilbur delights in telling the story of how long and winding the road can be to create a business plan, find the right location and execute the sale of a building.

“The new Habitat for Humanity of Johnson County ReStore is a Win–Win–Win.” First, the county will have a centrally located place to drop off resalable building supplies and gently used furniture. Knowing that the items you donate won’t end up in a landfill but will, instead, help a neighbor is gratifying.

Plus, the proceeds from the sale of these items will go to build more Habitat homes here in our county as well as around the world. Lastly, the ReStore will be open to the public as a resource for folks looking for budget-friendly items to spruce up their own homes.

Through the generosity of the Johnson County Community Foundation, Old National Foundation and the Branigan Foundation, the ReStore is ready to become a reality.

Currently, the local Habitat office is collecting inventory to fill the store. The typical items needed include: gently

Items that cannot be accepted: paint, hazardous materials, mattresses/box springs, carpet and fabric-covered furniture.

The local business community donated a forklift and industrial racking to help get the store organized. Although it is preferred to have items dropped off, the ReStore hopes to have a box truck decked out — logo and all — to pick up items when necessary.

Hiring a director of ReStore operations is in the works as well as signing up volunteers to staff the store. The goal is for the store to be open three days a week starting out.

If demand warrants, the store will look at increasing its hours of operation.

Time to de-clutter? Downsizing or cleaning out the garage this weekend? Consider donating items to the ReStore. Let’s help make the grand opening a huge success.

Wondering exactly where the location is and when the ReStore will open? Attend the More than Houses Breakfast on October 28 and find out. The board plans to unveil the opening date and location at the annual fundraiser.

 KATE IN THE MIDDLE

If you are a parent with kids in K-12, as you are reading this column, you probably are thinking, "Where did the summer go?" or "Did we even have a summer?"

Both are questions I am sure we have all, at the very least, said in our minds. I, like most parents, was ready for my kids to go back to school. Even with the balanced calendar and the shorter break, the kids got restless.

This summer was a bit different for us as our oldest can drive and our youngest was involved in two summer sport activities. That probably made it a little more enjoyable — not being trapped in the house.

Every workday, our oldest had to be up and at cross-country practice before 7:15am, Saturdays a little later. There was no sleeping in for him except Sunday. He didn’t have a job at a place of business, but he kept up our yard and a friend’s as well.

Now, all he has to do is look at the app on his iPhone. I update the kids’ schedules on it, and he will place his work travel on it as well as other appointments that would be helpful for me to know.

Having the calendar has made it so much easier to manage the busyness of being an active family. The Google Calendar app cuts down on the craziness life brings trying to track it all.

Our youngest child, who is finishing up middle school this year, played in a PGA junior league all summer. He had practices and matches throughout the summer. He also played in the Center When is our next vacation break? Oh, yeah! That’s in the Grove Ultimate Frisbee summer league. He was able to practice and calendar. play for two hours each Wednesday. It kept him busy.

By the time the kids got to mid-July, they were getting a bit bored.

The novelty of having wheels wore off, and they were ready to return to an even more structured routine. But, with the return to school, my life gets even busier.

So here we are, working toward establishing a routine and trying to figure out how best to keep track of tryouts, practices, meets and matches, back-to-school night, personal appointments, volunteer commitments and work travel plans between my spouse and myself. Sounds a little daunting, doesn’t it?

Smartphones have made it much easier to manage family calendars, and, being an Apple fan, I tried using their iCalendar.

At first, it seemed promising, but, somehow, it went awry.

During the summer, I decided to give Google Calendar a try. We use Gmail and some of their other features.

I started out with the browser calendar and then found the app.

I am not the most frequent shopper of apps, but when I decide I need to find one, I go shopping. After downloading the Google Calendar app, I introduced it to my spouse, and he downloaded it.

He was getting tired of asking me, "What do we have going on?"
