Changing Footprints
Local Organization is Making a Difference in Indy & Beyond Writer / Jennifer Brugh Photography Provided
Since 2005, the leaders of Changing Footprints have been taking in local donations to make a global change. What started out as a simple shoe collection project in Rushville, Indiana, has now grown into five collection and sorting facilities across the state, including a location in Greenwood. Founded by Maureen Leisure and Bob Broughton of Rushville, Changing Footprints has used more than 600 volunteers to distribute over 400,000 pairs of new or gently used shoes over the last 15 years. The organization distributed 80,000 pairs of shoes in 2019. While a majority of the shoes stayed local, others went around the country and the world including Ghana, Haiti, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kenya and Nepal. In Greenwood, Scott Splichal serves as the Changing Footprints manager and team leader for southside Indianapolis, and he works alongside board director and business networking specialist Noah Barrow as well as outreach ministries coordinator Jack Williams. Together, the three men volunteer their time to collect, sort and distribute shoes to those in need. “I love being involved and giving back because I know how lucky I am to have the things that I’ve had,” Splichal says. “It’s all about giving back to the community when you feel fortunate for the things you have.” And giving back is what Changing Footprints is all about. According to Williams, collecting shoes is just the tool the staff uses to get out into the community and into the right places around the city. In fact, the south Indy location has collected everything from coats and clothing to household items and food.
“This stuff just comes into us,” Williams says. “We never know what we’re going to get.” Changing Footprints partners with other local organizations to host giveaways to pay it forward. Partners like the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, the Salvation Army, Wheeler Mission, Orangetheory Fitness, and Coburn Place have all been vessels for shoe distribution or collection, and the south Indy team hopes the partnerships and the giving will continue to grow. “The need has always been there, but the need didn’t know we existed,” Splichal says. “We didn’t know what the need was, but now that we’re coming closer together, this thing is just snowballing.” The growth is encouraging but comes with new challenges. In August of 2019 the south Indy team found a temporary sorting facility, but is now in need of more space, funding, and volunteers that are willing to collect shoe bins, sort and clean shoes, and help run events. Barrow says he initially signed up to volunteer because it was something he could do with his kids. “Volunteering is one of the best things,” he says. “Whether you can volunteer for an hour a month or an hour a day, it doesn’t matter. Everybody is really motivated to help. It’s great. There’s nobody involved who doesn’t want to be here.” Changing Footprints accepts donations throughout the year, and hosts a variety of outreach events around the city. With a strong community and support system, every volunteer can make a difference one opportunity at a time, through one pair of shoes at a time. The Changing Footprints southside Indianapolis facility is located at 5602 Elmwood Avenue, Suite 113 (by appointment only). Preparing your Lawn and Landscape for Spring Writer / Robert Pesto, Founder, Restoration Landscape Photography Provided
With the current lack of snowfall and mild temperatures here in central Indiana, you might have started to see signs of life growing in your landscape. Daffodils and daylilies starting to sprout, buds on trees looking plump and ready to explode into beautiful foliage, or even wildlife that would typically be in hiding until warmer days arrive. No one really knows what the remainder of winter will bring us, but it’s March - that time of the the season to start planning for your spring lawn and landscape projects. Here are a few tips to get your lawn and landscaping ready for spring. 1. Even though your lawn has been dormant since November, now is the time to finish cleaning up all the leaves and fallen limbs that you didn’t get to at the beginning of winter. Large quantities of leaf debris can cause lawn areas to die out due to lack of sunlight and excessive moisture. 2. Lawn aeration is important to allow roots to properly breathe - this stimulates deep root growth. Make sure the ground is not frozen so you can pull the deepest core of soil to the surface. Always aerate first before applying a pre-emergent herbicide so you don’t break the barrier that the pre-emergent herbicide creates. 3. Check your lawn fertilization equipment to make sure it’s operating correctly. If you have this completed by a professional, make sure you’re on their 6 / GREENWOOD MAGAZINE / MARCH 2020 / atGreenwood.com
list to get the pre-emergent herbicide. This is important to help fight off the pesky crabgrass that arrives in the early summer. 4. Fertilize! Fertilizing can be done with scheduled pre-emergent herbicide application, but remember - your plants are coming out of dormancy and they’ll benefit from some extra nutrients too. A 10-10-10 composition mix of fertilizer, or something similar, sprinkled around your trees and shrubs will soak into the ground and provide a boost to the color and overall health of plants. 5. Check your trees and shrubs for damaged limbs or branches that might be overcrowding other plants, gutters or building structures. Also, look to prune plants that might be too large for a given space, to allow air and sunlight into their interior.
6. Cut back any remaining expired perennials and dormant ornamental grasses. Grasses do provide some winter interest, but as we get closer to spring, it’s good to cut them back to at least three-quarters of their original height. Watch out for any creatures nesting in them after you have cut them back. Geese and ducks love to settle down in fresh-cut ornamental grasses in the spring. 7. Take a look at your mulch. Hardwood mulches are beneficial to plants by providing nutrients as they start to decompose. Excessive mulch, however, has a harder time breaking down, and causes mold and runoff during spring rains. A good rule to follow is to always have between two and three inches of mulch cover in your beds to help suppress weeds and protect plant

roots from drying out. If you do have thicker mulch in certain areas, remove it first before applying a fresh cover. 8. Dream about the possibilities for your yard and landscape space. This is a great time to consider the outdoor projects you’ve wanted to complete for so long. It might be a patio or maybe a gazebo for shade, or perhaps a fire pit for cool evenings to enjoy with friends and family. Maybe this is the year to get that outdoor kitchen you’ve always wanted. National Girl Scout Week Returns March 8 Through 14 Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided
More than 100 years ago, Girl Scouts of the United States of America was founded in Savannah, Georgia, by Juliette Gordon Low. During a time when women did not have the right to vote, Low saw a need for an organization that enables girls to explore their interests and develop character. Although the Girl Scouts organization has kept up with the times, its leaders still follow its original goal of allowing girls to pursue their interests and improve their communities while having fun at the same time. Girl Scout Week is celebrated each year to raise awareness about the organization, and commemorate its history and traditions. “Traditionally, Girl Scout week always begins with a Girl Scout Sunday and ends with Girl Scout Sabbath in order for girls to be recognized when they attend services at their places of worship,” says Katie Dawson, communications manager for Girl Scouts of
Central Indiana. “It raises attention to the fact that Girl Scouts is about making sure that girls are prepared for a lifetime of leadership and adventure. This year the dates are March 8 through 14.” Leaders of the Girls Scouts organization focus on developing a lifetime of leadership by offering opportunities for girls of all ages - kindergarteners and first graders are Daisies; second and third graders become Brownies; fourth and fifth graders are Juniors; six through eighth graders are Cadettes; ninth and tenth graders are Seniors; those in grades 11 and 12 are Ambassadors. Beyond that, adults can become volunteers. “Parents are encouraged to get involved by becoming troop leaders,” Dawson says. “Other adults can volunteer too.”

Within the various levels of participation, programming is carefully tailored to fit each age group. Girls are guided to develop a sense of self, display positive values, seek challenges and learn from setbacks, form and maintain healthy relationships, and solve problems in their communities. At the same time, science, technology, engineering and math are stressed along with the outdoors, life skills and entrepreneurship. “Troops use their cookie money for community projects,” Dawson adds. “Each troop can decide on their own individual focus to make their community even better.” Recently, Greenwood Troop 1750 earned the Girl Scout Bronze Award, which is the highest honor Girl Scout Juniors can achieve. The group worked with the Johnson County Animal Shelter to improve the quality of life for pigs. The girls researched grass and flower species that would be suitable to plant around a new pig enclosure. “Our girls harnessed their existing talents and interests, built new skills, and reached out to other community members to complete a project that exceeded their and the shelter’s expectations,” says Sandy Saha, Troop 1750 Bronze Award advisor. “As their project advisor, there was nothing quite so satisfying as standing in the pouring rain on planting day and hearing a girl say, ‘We did it!’” Most girls join troops at the beginning of a new school year, but leaders are always looking for new participants. A prospective member can join an existing troop within her school or find the closest troop’s location by visiting the official website. “Girl Scouting is a fun way to learn, acquire leadership skills and develop lifelong friendships,” Dawson says. “For over a century, it has been the premier organization that focuses on nurturing and developing girls.” Visit GirlScoutsIndiana.org for more information.

Bare Wax and Spa Local Couple Helps Clients Feel Their Best Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Lindy Scott
Visiting a spa is supposed to be a selfindulgent experience full of relaxation and restoration. Years ago, however, Paula Barger had a horrific waxing experience that left her skin burned and ripped. The incident lit a fire within her. “I never wanted another person to endure something so awful, so I decided to alter my career path,” says Paula, who was attending medical school at the time. She promptly switched gears and enrolled in esthetician school. “Not only did I love the work, but loving on people was the business model I wanted to follow,” says Paula, who became determined to eventually open her own spa. It was a tough road however, as Paula, a mother of five (two of her children are biological and three are adopted from
Ukraine), was going through a difficult divorce and struggling to make ends meet. Armed with a fierce love for her family and a driven spirit, she was determined to see her vision through to fruition. In early 2012 Paula met Dean Barger, a divorced father of three who was hesitant to open his heart to love again. Though he was not looking for a romantic connection, he couldn’t deny the spark between them. “I literally realized after our first date that this was the person I wanted to spend my life with,” Dean says. The two admitted their true feelings and began dating exclusively. In the meantime, Paula realized her dream and opened Bare Wax and Spa in September of 2013. Dean, who had worked at a corporate job for 32 years, helped out behind the scenes with logos, marketing and social media. Over time, word spread and Paula’s client list crew exponentially. Spa currently offers waxing, lash and brow services, skin care and permanent cosmetics. In 2014 Paula moved to a storefront boutique and hired four additional staff members. “At that point I told Dean that we couldn’t afford for him to work in corporate America anymore,” says Paula. “I needed him full time at the spa.” The latter decision worked out well, and Dean, who has a background in art, became licensed and certified in microblading and semi-permanent cosmetics.
In July of 2014 Paula and Dean were married on the shores of Key West, Florida, and the couple wrote the names of their eight children - Kelsie, Lake, Sydney, Natasha, Chase, Vika, Colin, and Anya - on seashells placed by their feet during the nuptials. When they returned home to Greenwood, they threw a big celebration for family and friends. In 2017 Bare Wax and Spa moved to its current location on East Main Street in Greenwood, and in 2018 Paula and Dean added the Lash Lounge. The couple, along with the help of Paula’s father Charles and Dean’s best friend Mark, built out the
space, which included plastering, painting, decorating and more. “My daddy and Mark were amazing assets to help us out,” Paula says. “It was tough. Through all of that we still had the spa open, so we were working 90-hour weeks.” All of their hard work has most definitely paid off. The spa attracts clients from surrounding areas including Avon, Shelbyville, Columbus, Muncie, Brown County, Bloomington, Bedford, Terre Haute and Richmond. Paula even has a lash client who travels from Washington, D.C., twice per year. atGreenwood.com / MARCH 2020 / GREENWOOD MAGAZINE / 13
People come not only for the top-notch products and services, but also because they appreciate the heart and soul of the staff. “We have a heart for our clients and that’s the key to running a successful business,” Paula says. “If you’re in business for the right reasons, you’ll never struggle in business. Maybe I’m a romantic, but I truly believe that.” Paula also believes in transforming lives. She refers to the spa as her outreach ministry, and says she regularly sees people come into the spa downtrodden and leave
completely changed. She recalls a lady who came to the spa to have her lashes done. Afterwards the lady was crying, and when Paula asked if she was OK, the woman said she was crying happy tears and that her spa experience left her feeling pretty for the first time in a long while. “She was welling up with pride because she felt so much better,” Paula says. “That’s the most beautiful feeling in the world.”

Will Mattingly
BUILT TO LAST Writer / Seth Johnson . Photographer / Ellie Sophia Photography
FAMILY-OWNED MATTINGLY CONCRETE IS WHEELS DOWN WITH SOUTHSIDE EXPANSION Mattingly Concrete is built to last, and the familyowned company is making good on that promise with its recent expansion into the southside of Indianapolis. With a shop located in Carmel, Mattingly Concrete has extended its service radius to include all sides of Central Indiana, reaching about 45 miles in any direction from its headquarters. In addition to this northside hub, the company has also recently set up another satellite work station on the southside, expanding its services even further into areas like Center Grove, Greenwood and Martinsville.
“We’ve built a great business here on the northside of Indianapolis, and we are excited to carry that over to the southside now,” says Owner Will Mattingly. “We are expanding our service area and anticipate adding 50 jobs to the southside over the next five years.” Mattingly Concrete’s growth has continued rapidly and steadily in recent years. Along the way, the company has garnered plenty of accolades including the 2017 and 2018 Angie’s List Super Service Award, the Indy A-List and more. In 2017 and 2019, Mattingly Concrete was named one of the Indianapolis Business Journal’s Fastest-Growing Companies. “We are a healthy company with a lot of momentum and energy,” Mattingly says. “That is thanks in large part to our stellar employees and our customers. Our customers and their satisfaction are what matters most.”

Chris Sargent - Director of Sales and Estimating Amy Wahlstrom - Business Manager Will Mattingly - President
Mattingly Concrete was founded in 1987. Today, the company handles projects across Central Indiana, but the family-owned business originally comes from a humble beginning. “Our roots actually started in the Meridian-Kessler/Broad Ripple area,” Mattingly says. “That is where my father, Dan, got his start, simply knocking on doors with a wheelbarrow in his pickup truck.” Early on, Dan set the standard for Mattingly Concrete projects and the way in which they are completed. “He was very personable and good with people,” Mattingly says. “And we continue that focus today. As a homeowner, once you’ve worked with a couple of contractors, some of your worst nightmares can come true. And if you’re lucky, you come across a contractor who knows those pain points and knows how to ease your anxiety, and that is who we are.” Mattingly Concrete has always put the customer first, no matter how large or small the project happens to be the company makes sure to get the job done on time and has open communication with homeowners that makes the entire process work seamlessly. That promise to its customers is proven through the quality of work and countless customer reviews and testimonials.
“You get to go to work, come home, and we have done what was supposed to be done,” Mattingly says. “You know we took our notes. We just pride ourselves in the level of service that we provide and making sure that our customers are completely satisfied with the job we’ve done.” Mattingly Concrete primarily works with homeowners. In fact, Mattingly estimates that about 75% of their projects consist of driveways and patios. “We’re talking tearing out and totally replacing a driveway or tearing out and totally recreating a backyard patio,” he says. The company also provides services including steps, sidewalks, porches and decorative concrete such as stamped, colored and exposed aggregate. While they primarily work with homeowners, Mattingly Concrete provides commercial site work as well, completing projects involving curbing, parking lots, common areas and ADA ramps. When it comes to their process, the company always makes sure they have someone on hand at their offices to answer questions.
16 / GREENWOOD MAGAZINE / MARCH 2020 / atGreenwood.com
“We look for honesty and integrity over anything,” Mattingly says. “We have a 33-year history and reputation that rides on the line every day, and when we hire people, we express that. The team we have today is fantastic.
“A lot of people find a window contractor or concrete guy, they call, and there’s no answer,” Mattingly says. “So, we try to wow people by answering our phones. It sounds rudimentary, but it really takes just that.” After accepting a quote from Mattingly Concrete, customers are assigned a project coordinator who makes sure everything is completed correctly and on schedule. “We have a dedicated team that takes care of our customers,” Mattingly says. “Their sole job is to walk alongside the homeowners and see the project through.”
WE HAVE A DEDICATED TEAM THAT TAKES CARE OF THE CUSTOMER. W I L L M AT T I N G LY
When it comes to the people they employ, Mattingly Concrete looks for only the best. The hiring process is a rigorous one, and the company only hires highly-trained workers that display professionalism on every job-site.
“We still pride ourselves in having all our own employees — we don’t sub-contract anything,” Mattingly adds. “We’ve separated ourselves from other concrete contractors in that regard. We have all of our own employees and all of our own equipment.” When they’re not on the clock, Mattingly Concrete employees are out making a difference in the community, whether that is helping someone in need or volunteering their time to a local charity. That level of community service is crucial to Mattingly. “We’ve had people call us and say, ‘Hey. Your guy just helped me air up my tire at the gas station,’” Mattingly says, adding that the company also works with local organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels. “Those are the kinds of people that we want working for us. They have our name on their t-shirt, and they wear it proudly.” All in all, Mattingly Concrete looks to continue providing a service at a level that is unmatched, both on the northside and southside of Indianapolis. “We are excited to bring that level of service to the southside,” Mattingly says. “We really stress to people that we’re here for them. You can call us anytime.” Mattingly Concrete’s shop is located at 10620 Bellefontaine Street in Indianapolis. You can also call them at 317-867-4049 or visit them online at MattinglyConcrete.com for more information.

Pursue tax-efficient investing. Investing should be focused on meeting your goals, not just on reducing taxes. But in some cases the two dovetail nicely.
