Inspired by God’s Gift of Grace This year our hearts were filled with both joy and sadness. We held our families closer at home. We prayed for our healthcare heroes, all while God showed us our strength and resiliency. In celebration of our Savior’s birth and His gift of Grace, Franciscan Health has never been more inspired to joyfully serve you, as we serve Christ through our mission of caring for the sick and needy. This Christmas season, we reflect on the year God ensured He would always be near. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

researching, she discovered that being an au pair - providing child care for room and board - would give her the opportunity to live in a foreign country. “Lauren found a website that connects au pairs with families in Europe,” Nadia says. “Through the search and interview process, Lauren connected with the Fresia family and accepted the position. She flew to Imperia, Italy in the spring of 2019 and became part of the Fresia family. Marcella Roggero had been an au pair in America when she was Lauren’s age and loved her experience in the U.S. She and her husband Fabri, wanted their two daughters, Nina

and Nora, to speak English and to learn from an American. “When we visited Lauren, we had the opportunity to spend time with the Fresia family. We immediately hit it off and that’s when we tasted Olio Fresia Olive Oil for the first time. We couldn’t believe how fabulous this oil was. Fabri and Marcella always wanted to bring Olio Fresia to the US and had attempted it before, but it didn’t get off the ground. When they met us, they felt as if we were the right partners to make it happen.” The Fresia Family has been making olive oil for more than 100 years. In 1918, Fabrizio (Fabri) Fresia’s enterprising great-

grandfather, Nino, not only started producing and bottling the oil, but was also the delivery man. His hard work paid off when word of mouth spread the knowledge of his high-quality product. Today the tradition is carried on by Fabri and his brother. “What makes this oil unique is that it’s made from the Taggiasca variety of olives found in Imperia,” Nadia says. “This cold-pressed oil is unlike any other that most people have had the chance to taste. Currently we sell two varieties: Rosabianca Extra Virgin Olive Oil and II Gagliardo, our spicy extra virgin olive oil. “The Taggiasca olive tree has ancient

origins that started in pre-Roman times. It took Benedictine Monks to perfect and teach farmers the way to cultivate the olives. The climate on the western coast of Italy was the perfect home for these trees and now 75% of the Taggiasca olives are produced in Imperia. The Taggiasca olives are the key to the unique taste of our Rosabianca Olive Oil. It is a perfect addition for a healthy diet.” Wade says. When asked the best ways to use the oil, Nadia replies, “Sprinkle it with a little sea salt and fresh cracked pepper. Then dip chunks of warm, crusty Italian bread in it. It’s so good! It makes a fantastic vinaigrette for salads. Lauren’s favorite is to drizzle it over avocado toast. I also use it to make a caprese salad of sliced tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil. Chef Fabio, a chef in Imperia, created recipes just for Olio Fresia which can be found on our website.”

Currently, the unique olive oil is available for purchase online. The company’s website showcases the two varieties and explains the history of the company. They are also planning to expand to offer more products, pesto and olives. Olio Fresia US also maintains a Facebook and Instagram page. “Initially, I created a quick post on Facebook and six cases sold in 15 minutes,” Nadia says. “That’s when we thought we had an opportunity to start a business. It’s a very rare and limited olive oil. We are really excited about bringing it to the States. We would also like to partner with local shops and restaurants and hope to one day even have our own store.” For more information, visit OlioFresiaUS. com, @OlioFresiaUS on Instagram or view Olio Fresia US on Facebook.

THE WARRIOR 110 NONPROFIT HELPS MILITARY VETERANS IN NEED 8 / GREENWOOD MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2020 / atGreenwood.com

Writer / Matt Keating Photography / Provided & Sean Byrum

Brian Alvey is willing to go the extra mile for military veterans in need of help. Alvey, a former soldier with the United States Army who served in Afghanistan and retired in 2012, started The Warrior 110 nonprofit organization with his friend Adam Smith. They created the program to raise awareness and funds for veterans suffering from physical and emotional ailments such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, suicide and traumatic brain injury. Alvey and Smith raise funds through

ruck marches - weighted walks often used in military training - that stretch for more than 100 miles. Their most recent ruck march started in New Albany on November 7 and concluded on November 11 (Veterans Day) at The Mint, a bourbon bar in Franklin that Alvey owns. “Adam Smith and I talked about doing something to help veterans and we couldn’t come up with anything at first,” Alvey says. “After I thought about it for a while, I came up with this idea, and Adam loved it.” During their first ruck march in July of 2019, Alvey and Smith raised $50,000. They walked about 115 miles from New

Albany to Franklin. The funds raised are allocated to the Brian Bill Foundation in Florida, the leaders of which endeavor to assist soldiers suffering from a variety of ailments. “The Brian Bill Foundation is an equine therapy facility founded by Scott Bill, the father of Navy Seal Brian Bill,” Alvey says. “It’s a great program that really helps veterans. It’s a good facility that does a lot of positive work to help people who need it.” Alvey served in the 151st Infantry doing long-range surveillance.

atGreenwood.com / DECEMBER 2020 / GREENWOOD MAGAZINE / 9

“I tell a lot of people that when we sprain our ankles, we go to a doctor for help,” Alvey says. “Well, when we sprain the most sensitive part of our body, the brain, some people just say, ‘Hey, it’s alright. I’ll just walk it off.’ It doesn’t work that way. It doesn’t make sense. We have to talk to someone and have a dialogue. We’ve got to encourage people to go get some help.” Alvey says The Warrior 110 conveys a message to veterans that there are positive ways to get help. “Some veterans isolate themselves, and that’s not the way to go,” he says. “They can have professionals help them.” Alvey says many veterans struggle with depression after they come home from serving in places like Afghanistan. “The transition back to their old lives can really be rough for a lot of veterans,” he says. “We invited the public to go with us on our walk from November 7 through 11.” Alvey is a busy man these days. Besides running The Mint and The Warrior 110 organization, he also serves as vice president of Festival Country Indiana, and works at The Warrior 110 fitness center in Franklin.

“The Warrior 110 gym is a full-combat gym with Brazilian jiu-jitsu, boxing and other things,” Alvey says. “We have two amazing groups that have joined together to facilitate a majority of the training - the Franklin Jiu Jitsu Club, also known as Griz Cave, and Indy Combat Grappling. Our goal is to facilitate the opportunity for veterans to pick up a new mission in life through the study of jiu-jitsu, boxing, etcetera, and we will be offering such things as yoga as well.” Alvey says the November ruck march was highly successful.

NOW ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS

“We got it done again,” he says. “The hardest part was that I hurt my knee, and had some leg and shin issues, but we finished it. We persevered. We were

able to accomplish what we set out to do, which was spread awareness about some important issues. It’s a shame we didn’t get more local television coverage, but hopefully we were able to inspire some war veterans to go get help if they need it. They need to know that people care about them, and acknowledge all of the great things they did.” For more info on The Warrior 110 organization, visit facebook.com/pg/ Warr110r.

LIGHT IT UP NEWFIELDS HOSTING FOURTH ANNUAL WINTERLIGHTS EVENT

Jonathan Wright, Deputy Director for Horticulture & Natural Resources

16 / GREENWOOD MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2020 / atGreenwood.com

Writer & Photographer / Michael Durr

The only thing better than the silent majesty of a winter’s morning is a holiday evening spent at the Winterlights event at Newfields. 2020 marks the fourth year for what has quickly become one of Indy’s favorite holiday traditions. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, you might be thinking that it’s Christmas and we’re all in misery, but fear not - this year’s Winterlights have undergone a few tweaks and you can keep your expectations high, as the Newfields team members have once again shown they know best when it comes to exterior illumination. Jonathan Wright, deputy director for horticulture and natural resources, leads

the charge for this year’s Winterlights event. Timed tickets, a mask mandate and a one-way flow are just a few of the steps being taken by Wright and his team to ensure the health and safety of all the attendees and staff members. What exactly goes into making the Winterlights event such an incredible holiday spectacle?

the highest branches, with a single tree having as many as 60,000 individual lights illuminating it. The wrapping of those trees can start as early as August, and finishing touches are typically completed leading up until the final days before the start of the show.

“The big joke among our staff is that we spend half the year putting the lights up and half the year taking the lights down,” Wright says.

With more than a million-and-a-half lights glowing throughout the property, it’s not surprising that this endeavor takes months of meticulous planning, preparation and bulb checking. Between staff members and volunteers, there are hundreds of people involved in putting the show together.

Some of the 100-year-old trees located throughout the historic garden are wrapped from the ground to the tips of

“We couldn’t put on this show without the incredible team of dedicated garden volunteers who help throughout the year,

creating some of the components, stringing lights and making ornaments,” Wright says. This year, Wright and his team are excited to unveil some incredibly bright, robotic flood lights that will allow for some breathtaking illuminated backdrops as attendees stroll through the garden. “The show is going to be bigger and brighter than it ever has been, and about 25% of the show will be entirely new,” Wright says. Also new this year is Indianapolis-based Huckleberry Funk’s cover of Donny Hathaway’s “This Christmas,” which will be added to the Landscape of Light alongside last year’s “Nutcracker.” “The Landscape of Light is over 465 panels, and each one of those panels needs to be programmed to the eighth of a second to sync with the music,” Wright says. “It takes weeks and weeks of nothing but programming by our lighting designer, who has the incredible ability of translating the music visually.” Abundant lights, a beverage selection and new features will put a smile on the faces of all who attend. Warm chocolate chip cookies and Just Pop In! popcorn will be available for purchase, along with Sun King Brewing’s Electric Reindeer ale, West Fork Whiskey Co.’s cider, as well as hot cocoa. It might be a bit nippier out this year with fewer indoor activities, so come prepared to be outside this season, and enjoy a safe and socially distanced moment of togetherness. The show this year runs from November 21 through January 3, and is sure to be one of the highlights of the holiday season for anyone living in or around the Indianapolis area. Advanced tickets are required for all guests and members. Newfields is located at 4000 North Michigan Road in Indianapolis. Artist Edward Patterson

CANVAS CALLING Local Painter Creates 10 Images of Bible Stories 20 / GREENWOOD MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2020 / atGreenwood.com

Southland Senior Pastor Steve Schellin Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / Amy Payne

a small sign for Southland Community Church.

As a young boy, Edward Patterson used to paint caricatures on Monument Circle in downtown Indianapolis, charging $1 for his work. For a period of time he stepped away from his art, but returned to it in the 1980s when he was introduced to “The Joy of Painting” television series hosted by Bob Ross.

He spoke to Steve Schellin, senior pastor at Southland, and shared his idea. Schellin met with the church elders, and rather than say no to one painting, they said yes to 12. When deciding which Bible stories to depict, Patterson selected scenes that were not only easily recognizable, but also told a story from beginning to end. Ultimately Patterson completed 10 paintings depicting the Garden of Eden, Noah’s Ark, Parting of the Red Sea, Ten Commandments, Last Supper, Crucifixion, Sacrifice of Isaac, Daniel and the Lion’s Den, Nativity, and Resurrection of Jesus.

“That inspired me to pick up a brush and start painting again,” says Patterson, who traveled all over the U.S. and Europe taking classes to improve his craft. While studying in the Netherlands and Belgium he was intrigued by larger portraits, and inspired to step up his game and attempt to paint on a larger scale. When he returned home in 2013, he made plans to paint the Garden of Eden. He rented out Garfield Park Conservatory, hired two models, and took photos of the scene from which to paint. He was all set to work but wondered where he could display the painting once it was complete. Since his subject matter was biblical he thought a church might be interested, but after several rejections he had all but given up. He was on his way home when he saw

“I happened to be preaching a bird’s eye view of the Bible,” Schellin says. “Having paintings that reflected those stories seemed like a good fit.” Though the plan was to complete the paintings in one year, it took more than eight years because each painting took Patterson roughly 400 hours to complete and factoring in the time his two assistants put in, the number is closer to 1,200 hours. Through the years, roughly 100 volunteers helped bring Patterson’s paintings to life.

atGreenwood.com / DECEMBER 2020 / GREENWOOD MAGAZINE / 21

he realized he could only complete 10 paintings rather than 12.

“Some helped out one night, and others helped all eight and a half years,” says Patterson, who wrote a book about his artistic journey titled “Painting the Bible Story” (available through the official Barnes & Noble website). It describes his inspiration for the project as well as his painting techniques.

One day when he walked into the church, Schellin said to Patterson, “I prayed for you.” He provided no further explanation. Patterson thanked him and kept walking. At his next appointment with his neurologist, Patterson got the surprising news that his neuropathy was in remission.

Work on the paintings slowed when Patterson was diagnosed with motor neuropathy, a condition in which muscles in the extremities gradually weaken. “I couldn’t stand on the ball of my right foot,” Patterson says. “My entire body was getting weaker. Nerve damage went with it and that slowed me down quite a bit.” He plugged along and painted as often as he could. At the time Patterson was 90% finished with the work, but because his medications and art supplies were costly,

“I sent Pastor Steve a note that said, ‘I owe you one!’” says Patterson, who was able to go back to church with renewed vigor. He finished the last painting in the spring of 2020. The final challenge involved figuring out where to hang all of the paintings so that they are not only in prominent display but also well protected. Ultimately, the church built a library with lighting to accommodate all 10 paintings.

“We worked with Mike on listing our home this year. We had a great experience and would highly recommend him. Mike was the perfect REALTOR® to list our home. He took the time to understand and appreciate the neighborhood and quality of our home, which reflected in how our home was presented to potential buyers. Mike was great at navigating us through the whole process from start to finish with ease and understanding. We appreciated the effort he put in to the sale of our home, and also having genuine care in our best interests. Thanks Mike. Congrats and job well done on another success!” – Eric and Shayla B.

MIKE CAGLE 317.888.3311

“It’s a place to grow in your faith and to really focus on these Bible stories, God’s stories of his creation and his interaction with humanity,” Schellin says. Patterson was grateful for the opportunity, as is Schellin. “He painted it for the glory of God, but we can’t say in words how grateful we are to him for the sacrifices he put forth to provide it for us,” Schellin says. Southland Community Church is located at 5800 West Smith Valley Road in Greenwood. Patterson’s paintings can be viewed during church hours, Mon. through Fri. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and before and after services on Sunday mornings.
