FINE, FINE, FINE: A TRIBUTE TO REVEREND THURMOND COLEMAN, SR.

A giant of a man, with a deep, booming voice and jovial demeanor - that is the first impression Reverend Thurmond Coleman, Sr. made on others. It was natural to immediately feel at ease in his presence, but to hear him talk - no one could ever forget that, and one’s attention would be completely drawn in as he spoke, just hanging on to every word and how it was uttered. Whatever he said was riddled with a smattering of “Amens” and “Fine, Fine, Fines.” One could not help but adore him.

education was of the utmost importance to compete intellectually and economically. One of the gyms at the David L. Armstrong Recreation Center is named in his honor, as is the street where his parsonage was located. In the 1990s, when Skyview Park, which had been established by James Wilson in the 1940s for black children to have a place to play, was renovated and about to be renamed, Coleman was instrumental in making sure the name stayed the same. He was a civil rights activist and worked tirelessly to bring blacks and whites together as a community, not only in Jeffersontown but in the entire state as well.

To list all of Coleman’s achievements and the honors bestowed upon him would take far more space than allotted here, but suffice it to say that he led First Baptist Church of Jeffersontown for 45 years, and he was very proud to have played a major role in establishing the Jeffersontown little league, high School and library, feeling that a good

Reverend Coleman brought with him his wife, Cora Elizabeth, and their five young children, Jane, Thurmond Jr., Thelma, Charles and Donald. At a 2009 meeting of the Greater Jeffersontown Historical Society, Coleman noted, “When I come to Jeffersontown, the church, they said, ‘We’ll pay him $35 a week, and parsonage.’ I said, ‘Well, I’m not coming for the money,’ and the man said, ‘Well, that’s great - well, we’ll give him $30 every week.’ I’ll never make that mistake again!”

racially-open housing, he “talked softly, telling the audience things it didn’t want to hear, and somehow he compelled them to smile and applaud at the end.” Coleman faced many similar situations, often being the only black representative among a sea of angry whites, but all he had to do was start talking in order for others to calm down and listen. He believed strongly in community involvement, and spent many decades fighting racial injustices that had been so deeply ingrained in society. Early on in his tenure at First Baptist, he had to address the issue of the name of the church. At the time, there were two First Baptist Churches in Jeffersontown - one was a white congregation that ultimately built a sanctuary on Taylorsville Road, and the other was a black congregation that took over ownership of the old Union Church property at the corner of Shelby Street and Watterson Trail. When Coleman retrieved mail from the hardware store, he noted that all the envelopes said “First

Baptist, Colored”. Coleman told the proprietor that if he couldn’t address his mail to 10600 Watterson Trail, he’d stop buying anything in the store. The proprietor agreed. Coleman made a lot of difference in this town. In addition to serving as pastor of First Baptist, he also drove a school bus for Seneca and worked as a store detective at J.C. Penney. Many individuals who got caught shoplifting there noted how he saved them, because they knew they would have eventually ended up in jail had he not taken the time to minister to them personally. A 1978 Louisville Times article quoted him as saying, “I believe the whole person must be ministered to, not just his spiritual needs. There have to be rights and justice accorded folks on their jobs, and the church must lead in this.” As pastor, Coleman led by a shining example. Faced with adversity, he remained calm and dignified, a figure to be admired,

whether or not one agreed with his stance on matters. Coleman took care of his community - not just his flock at First Baptist Church, but the entire community. Reverend Coleman passed from this life on September 8, 2019. It seems fitting that he died right when the City of Jeffersontown the community he served for over 60 years - was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of

its hallmark Gaslight Festival. One of the highlights of his life was serving as Grand Marshal of the Gaslight parade in 2000 - his children said he got a kick out of waving to the crowd while riding in the Grand Marshal car. The family delayed putting his obituary in the newspaper until after the festivities were over, feeling that Coleman deserved to be honored without anything to detract from his memory.

MICHAEL HIGDON, REALTOR 502-345-7698 michael@michaelhigdon.com WeMoveLouisville.com

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

Michael Higdon has been in sales in one facet or another his entire life, having worked in corporate sales, telecommunications and audiovisual corporate business. In 2003, he transitioned into real estate and immediately took a shine to it, selling 30 houses in his first year. Though he utilized the same principals he had practiced throughout his career, he knew that selling homes was a “people business.” “I’m not afraid to ask a lot of questions and find out what a seller’s motivation is,” says Higdon, who has lived in Jeffersontown since 2001 and grew up in the Middletown area. “I like working with individuals to help them make a change in their life.” In the past seven years, he’s found a niche market that he really enjoys —working with probates, executors and administrators. Though a lot of realtors shy away from such sales, Higdon has the compassion necessary to make the process smooth and seamless. Having experienced grief in his own life, he offers clients genuine empathy.

“They’re overwhelmed and don’t understand the process,” he says. “They may not even live in this town.” Higdon gently advises next steps, which involves cleaning out the home, lining up contractors, and readying it for sale. Higdon recalls a time when he met with a client who was getting offers for his older home for $70,000 and $80,000. Higdon suggested that he pull back the tattered green shag carpeting and when he did, he discovered beautiful pine floors that hadn’t seen the light of day in five decades. The walls were also a dated shade so Higdon advised that the client spent $2,000 to rip up the carpeting, shine the floors, and paint the walls.

“It completely changed the look of the “I’m wearing a counselor hat, a contractor hat, and a Realtor hat,” Higdon says. “I have property,” Higdon says. to determine which hat I need to wear at any That’s not all that changed. It’s a great example of of their loved one’s property don’t know why Higdon loves his job. where to begin.

“I want to help you not only get the property ready for sale but also honor your loved one’s estate by maximizing your return for you and your siblings or any other heirs,” says Higdon, proud husband of morning radio DJ Kelly K. “She’s a rock star.” And Higdon is a rock star of real estate, having sold 150 estates in the last seven years. “I’ve had sellers tell me that they don’t know what they would have done without me there to help guide them along to get their house sold,” Higdon says. “I’m happy to do it. I’m on your side.” For more information, call 502-345-7698, email michael@ michaelhigdon. com, or visit www. WeMoveLouisville.com

TAKING THE STAGE THEATRE 502 DEBUTS NEW PLAY THROUGHOUT JANUARY Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

Born and raised in Louisville, Diana Grisanti came from a large family who equally adored sports and theatre. In fact, Grisanti admits that she sometimes uses the word “halftime” instead of “intermission” and vice versa when speaking about theatre and sporting events. As a teenager, Grisanti attended Commonwealth Theatre Center in Louisville (formerly the Waldon Theatre).

Theatre of Louisville where she had the joy of meeting other playwrights. She also studied for two years in Mexico. While there she wrote a play called “Semantics” that got her into graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin. “Semantics” is about language, wealth, US paternalism and the limits of good intentions.

with Mike Brooks (the founder who stepped down in 2006), Grisanti and her husband took over as co-artistic directors in 2019.

“The program at UT Austin was sort of two programs in one,” Grisanti says. “As a writer, my colleagues were playwrights, poets and fiction writers. But then, on the theatre side of it, I was collaborating with designers, actors and directors. So I had multiple communities in one.”

Though Theatre 502 doesn’t have a dedicated space, they hold the majority of their performances in Baron’s Theater, an old magic theater located on Main Street.

“That’s where I found my people — other theatre nerds,” she says. Though she had fun acting and singing, deep down she knew she didn’t want to pursue performing as a career. Then she stumbled upon “the literary side of Following graduate school, Grisanti making theatre,” and knew immediately she returned to Louisville with her husband, had found her purpose in playwrighting. Steve, also a playwright. They began working as Playwrights-in-Residence with She studied dramaturgy and playwrighting Theatre 502, a small company that opened at the University of Iowa. After college, in 2011. Initially run by Amy Attaway and she completed an internship at the Actors Gil Reyes (co-artistic directors), along JANUARY 2020

“It’s been intense and amazing, nuts and awesome,” Grisanti says. “It was unexpected, but it felt like the right step for all of us.”

“It’s a strange little space that we’ve come to love,” says Grisanti, noting that 100 people can fit in the building though she prefers setting it up cabaret style with tables, which cuts seating in half. “Every show is sort of its own thing. You have to calibrate the space to the show,” says Grisanti, who is biased to the smaller theatres. “I like to feel connected to what’s there.”

Family-owned and operated since 1979, Scheller’s is your one stop fitness & bicycle retailer. Typically, they fill the house as the theatre has a good reputation in the city for doing polished work. Still, she says she’d love for word to spread and for everyone in Jefferson County and beyond to come see their shows. Historically, Theatre 502 has put on three shows per year on the main stage with sometimes a couple of smaller, less produced productions on the side. Grisanti, who calls this a rebuilding year, has shifted the model of theatre from traditional seasons to project-to-project. “Steve and I are interested in producing plays by other writers, but we also want to carve out a space if we want to write something new or create something with a group of people in the room,” Grisanti says. “Basically, we’re just trying to give ourselves maximum flexibility.” Next up is the play Grisanti wrote called “Lawbreakers: A Fast and Furious History of Women’s Suffrage” which opens in January and runs for four weeks. When she was commissioned to write it, she was excited but anxious because she wanted to get it right. She did a ton of research to ensure that the play featured not just those we always

“Gasping Whiteness” by Will MacAdams, which is a play, community workshop and anti-racist fundraiser. Plus, Grisanti and her spouse are collaborating with senior theater majors at Uof L to draft a play.

“I honestly don’t know how they had the time in their day to do all of these amazing things,” Grisanti says. Told through the perspective of two teenage black stepsisters who are seniors in high school, through magic they go back in time to learn about all of these black suffragists who were doing work in the 1800s and early 1900s. “Lawbreakers” is focused on women of color, specifically black women who were working against multiple injustices.

“We’ll do an invited reading and produce that play a year form this spring,” Grisanti says. “We have multiple irons in the fire.” When it comes to writing plays, Grisanti says that if she’s focused, she can complete a draft in two to three weeks. When her son, Victor, was born three years ago, it actually helped sharpen her concentration.

“It’s one of the trickiest plays I’ve ever written because so many young people are going to see it,” Grisanti adds. “At the end of the day, I want them to leave the theatre excited about voting.”

The topics of those plays vary, though there are themes that show up in a lot of her work. For instance, she’s intrigued by the notion of good intentions that don’t pan out. Plus, all of her work is feminist in nature.

Grisanti is also producing a show called

“I always want to see more women on stage,”

“Now when I have writing time, I have to use it. I can’t squander it,” she says.

taking a moment to examine yourself and your own life. Theatre provides that opportunity,” Grisanti says.

She has taught every level, from PreK through college and adult. Currently, she’s teaching a playwriting class at the Commonwealth Theatre Center. She’s also teaching after-school drama programs at Looking for Lilith Theatre Company.

She notes that theatre is also communal.

“I’m constantly hustling on the teaching end because rarely can you make a living just writing plays. There are maybe five playwrights who do and the rest of us need a steady day job or a million side jobs to make ends meet.” Grisanti and her husband are passionate about theatre and the arts because it lets society take a pause from our real lives and consider what it means to be a person. “It makes us reflect on what our responsibility is to other people — just

“There’s something to be said for going into a room and everybody turning off their phones so that they may all participate in the same story. That so rarely happens,” Grisanti says. “With each play, you’re building a community in the rehearsal room and then you’re inviting more people into that community when you open the play.” And none of this even scratches the surface of all of the amazing life skills that theatre teaches — like how to work as a group and how to meet deadlines. “People in the business world are fools to not hire theatre people because we are really good at working under pressure,” Grisanti says.

REJUV MEDICAL 9204 Taylorsville Road Suite 206 Louisville, KY 502-785-7480 rejuvmedicalky.com

Dr. John Baird’s own health journey inspired him to open Rejuv Medical, where he helps hundreds of patients each year through functional medicine. The Fern Creek native earned his medical degree in 1992 and quickly became burnt out from the long hours he was working. “I was trying to figure out why I was feeling

so bad all the time,” says Dr. Baird, who took on moonlight shifts in the emergency room during his already stressful residency. “I was working with a physical trainer but gaining weight, and I was sore and tired all the time.” Dr. Baird met with a chiropractor who told him about adrenal fatigue and found that through lifestyle changes and integrative medicine concepts he began to feel better. JANUARY 2020

Functional medicine, which was started by Dr. Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D. about 20 years ago, looks at discovering the root cause of why a person is sick, instead of masking the symptoms with medications. Medical students are inundated with promotions and marketing by pharmaceutical companies throughout their educational experience, which Dr. Baird says leads to a heavy reliance on diagnosing and treating patients with medication.

holistic approach to medicine, he has been able to help patients regain better motor control, overcome intestinal issues and feel better overall.

“What they don’t teach medical students is what to do when medication doesn’t work,” Dr. Baird says. “Ninety percent of the issues we deal with in medicine are chronic, and we’ve made very little improvements over time. Functional medicine is just a different way of looking at things using specialized testing and improving lifestyles.” Dr. Baird works with clients on improving their diet and sleep habits, stress management and exercise and movements to improve overall health. He looks at the entire person and how they can deal with their emotional needs. “We treat the whole person,” says Dr. Baird, who has treated more than 10,000 patients using these principles. At Rejuv Medical, Dr. Baird helps patients with issues including peripheral neuropathy, obesity, thyroid disorders, infertility and PCOS and more. His services include hormone replacement therapy, testosterone replacement for men and even stem cell signaling. After Dr. Baird completed his residency and other training programs, he moved back to Louisville where he became the first doctor to have a full-time practice doing hormone replacement therapy.

“We’ve been able to completely resolve more than 80% of cases of IBS that have come to us using this method,” he adds. “That’s life-changing for people who couldn’t get out of the house because they were constantly suffering from diarrhea, constipation and bloating.” fat cells and gets rid of fat,” Dr. Baird says. “This allows people to lose two to eight inches of body fat in one session, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, alleviates pain and reverses neuropathy.” The therapy is great for patients suffering from fibromyalgia or chronic lower back pain and, in a more cosmetic sense, can take years off the face by reducing those fine lines. Throughout his more than 25 years of medical experience, Dr. Baird has gained great experience working with those who suffer from chronic pain and who deal with crippling side effects of autoimmune disease on a daily basis. By taking a

“We offer the most comprehensive hormone therapy in the area,” he says. “Louisville is still behind the curve in this area and remains one of the most obese cities in the U.S.” Patients at Rejuv Medical can opt to do Red Light Therapy, resulting in incredible spot reduction of excess fat in key trouble spots around the body. The technology was first discovered by NASA to treat astronauts coming back from space. They found that certain wavelengths of light gave energy to the body, almost like a grow light for plants. “In the process of studying this, they found that if you put the light over an area of the skin with a lot of fat, it pokes holes in the JANUARY 2020

Dr. Baird strives to provide a concierge level of care to his patients, spending 30 minutes to an hour with each person per appointment and giving out his cell phone number so patients can text or call at any time to get help. “We’re medical detectives,” Dr. Baird says of his practice. “We treat things other people can’t help.” Conveniently located at 9204 Taylorsville Road Suite 206 (in the same building as Taco Luchador), Rejuv Medical is open for appointments Monday through Friday. BOWMAN FIELD TO CELEBRATE 100TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2020 Writer / Anna Kate Goshko Photography Provided

Historic Bowman Field, a Louisville icon and an aviation treasure, was established nearly 100 years ago. One of the longestrunning commercial airports in the United States, Bowman Field is situated on 426 acres with three buildings and is on the National Register of Historic Places. You might pass by this iconic landmark and not think much of it - there’s a dive bar and

a seemingly vacant building nearby. But this historic treasure has plenty of people striving to keep its history alive. During World War II Bowman Field served as one of the nation’s most prestigious training bases and as the nation’s busiest airport. It was also the Air Force’s school for flight surgeons, medical technicians and flight nurses. Today Bowman Field is no longer bustling with war-torn aircraft or soldiers JANUARY 2020

in training, and now serves a different purpose - sharing history. Between military and civilian involvement, it’s hard to find someone who has not been touched by Bowman Field. Since 2014 Bowman Field officials have hosted BowmanFest, a celebration of the iconic Louisville landmark. The event includes military and civilian aircraft exhibits, an airshow, plane rides, reenactments and live music.

Festival director Pat MacDonald developed the event in anticipation of Bowman’s 100th anniversary in 2020. At the festival, attendees can get a taste of what a soldier might encounter in years past. Military tents from previous wars, restored aircraft and live music all bring yesteryear back to life through hands-on experiences. Those that attendeding the festival each year in October might see future soldiers peering through the belly of a massive military helicopter, or testing their imagination while sitting in the cockpit of a personal aircraft. It’s all a part of a collective effort to keep Bowman Field’s history alive. “Word spread pretty quickly about the festival and a lot of people wanted to be involved,” MacDonald says. “There’s a community of airshows and festivals celebrated around the country. Those that are involved come and help us find the historic aircraft that are important to the history of the field.”

More than 30 military and civilian airplanes were shown at the previous festival, along with military re-enactors and encampments, historic military and aviation exhibits, vintage cars, motorcycles and military vehicles. The C-130 Hercules, one of the largest aircraft to ever land at Bowman, was also present with other aircraft flyovers and air show maneuvers.

Adults can also participate in Four Roses Bourbon tastings as well as educational sessions, craft beer and food trucks. MacDonald believes that in order to keep history alive for younger generations, experiences like BowmanFest are necessary. “It’s such a unique experience and we didn’t want the anniversary to pass without Bowman getting the recognition it deserves,” he says. Each year MacDonald and his team have slowly expanded the festival, incorporating a mix of both military and civilian aircraft. Feedback from the community fuels ideas for the following year, and people come from all over the state to experience the history of Bowman Field. “Since 9/11 the (security) fences have gotten taller, and there’s no longer a big push to get people on the field to experience the aircraft and aviation

5 TIPS TO HELP KEEP YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided

It’s that time of year again — the time when we all start thinking about what we’d like to do more of or be better at in the coming year. Did you know people have been setting New Year’s resolutions for more than 4,000 years! It’s assumed almost everyone has made a New Year’s resolution — and then broken it. It’s crazy,

I know, but if you think about it, even if you fail, it’s a great way to kick off a new year. A resolution is technically something we choose to do, or not to do, but here are a few tips for how you can choose to keep those resolutions in 2020. 1. MAKE A LIST Many people make lists on the daily. Whether it’s a to-do list or shopping list, JANUARY 2020

we like to see things we need to do and what we’ve completed. It’s a visual thing. Sometimes just having something written down on paper helps you stick to it. It also makes it more real. So write out your resolutions on paper or even better get fancy and frame them! But even without a frame, put it somewhere you’ll see it every day so you are reminded of what you resolved to do.

2. C HOOSE THE RIGHT RESOLUTIONS The top three resolutions most years are related to health and fitness, but does that work for you? It might, but it might not. Don’t feel like you have to pick a resolution based on what everyone else is doing or usually does. Be original. Stay true to you and choose a resolution that really matters to you. If you can really get behind something, you’ll have better success with accomplishing it!

Hanna Ankle and Foot

3. TRY MINI-GOALS Mini goals or mini resolutions are a great way to reach a big goal with baby steps! It alleviates the making of a larger, terrifying and daunting resolution and instead breaks it up to make it more manageable. Mini goals are easier and typically require less time. Try to set a smaller goal for each month and by the time you complete all 12 months, you’ll have achieved that giant goal you weren’t quite sure you could take on in January. Setting mini-goals will help you accomplish resolutions in a more incremental way and stay on track all year long!

4. HAVE A BUDDY Accountability is a huge part of forging through tough times and keeping our resolutions in the New Year. Doing it on your own can be hard. But you don’t have to do it all by yourself. Find a friend who has the same goals for the year or similar ones who can keep you motivated when times get tough. Even telling someone your resolutions can keep you accountable. They can ask you how things are going and understand when you need a little pick me up or break. It’s always more fun to do things with friends, and New Year’s resolutions are no different. 5. REWARD YOURSELF Everyone does better with a reward dangling in front of them. Rewards make us all feel good. Maybe if you are working on your food intake, you have a cheat

MENTAL C.O.R.E. STRENGTH FOUNDATIONS FOR A HIGH-PERFORMANCE MINDSET Writer / Dr. Dave Schroerlucke

Fitness gurus love talking about the importance of developing your core – the region between your chest and hips. It provides the foundation for optimal balance and explosive power.

The goal here is simply to better understand what each of these terms means within the context of sport and performance psychology and to begin to appreciate why they are so consistently touted by elite performers and their mental coaches as being essential to optimal performance.

However, there is another kind of core strength – mental core strength –and it’s C is for CONFIDENCE found in the region between your ears. Put simply, confidence is the belief that you can accomplish whatever you set your mind to. In academic psychology, this belief has been operationalized under the term self-efficacy. Research has repeatedly shown that confidence (or self-efficacy) is one of the most reliable predictors of performance.

Confidence appears to exert its positive effects on performance primarily by changing the way we interpret the physiological arousal experienced in competitive or high-stake situations, with confident performers tending to interpret arousal as a good thing – a sign that they Confidence is the most frequently identified are alert and ready to face an exciting psychological attribute of elite athletes challenge rather than anxious about facing and performers. Not surprisingly then, a debilitating threat. enhancing self-confidence is universally viewed as one of the primary aims of O is for OPTIMISM coaches and sports psychologists.

Optimism is a strategy for making a better future. Because unless you believe that the future can be better, you are unlikely to step up and take responsibility for making it so. ~Noam Chomsky~ Whereas confidence is a belief about the self, optimism is a belief about the future. Achieving anything extraordinary requires great discipline and sacrifice. Optimism boils down to a fundamental conviction that hard work pays off – that all the effort and sacrifice will be worth it in the end. Because optimism is the cornerstone of the positive psychology movement, ample research has been accumulated that attests to the positive impact of optimism on performance across a wide range of disciplines.

Resilience is an extension of the first two mental qualities. Being confident and optimistic is one thing. Being able to maintain that confidence and optimism in the face of obstacles, setbacks, and even failure is another thing altogether. Resilience is about being able to get back up when you get knocked down – not just once, but repeatedly.

In the sport and performance context, resilience typically flies under the larger banner of mental toughness. Resilience is often considered to be the pinnacle of all mental attitudes because it translates to an extraordinary ability to maintain undiminished effort in the face of defeat, adversity or against tremendous odds. Indeed, such persistent effort is one of the hallmarks of a successful performer.

Financial Life Planning Centered on You!

Optimism is thought to enhance performance primarily by promoting the mobilization and continued investment of effort and energy toward a goal. Since the outcome of any venture is uncertain, some amount of optimism is required in order to take even the first step in the direction of a desired outcome. R is for RESILIENCE The moment we believe that success is determined by an ingrained level of ability as opposed to resilience and hard work, we will be brittle in the face of adversity. ~Joshua Waitzkin~ Author of The Art of Learning In the physical world, resilience refers to the ability of a substance or object to spring back to its original shape after being deformed (think of a Nerf football). Similarly, in the context of performance, resilience refers to the ability to recover following a mistake, loss, injury or other adversity.

My intention is neither to diminish nor supersede the valuable contributions of these and other researchers. This is simply my attempt to organize and distill a wide range of overlapping psychological constructs into a format that makes sense and is easy to remember. That’s where the acronym C.O.R.E. comes in.

clicking on the links scattered throughout. There is no question that the path to excellence begins in the mind. Investing in the development of confidence, optimism, resilience, and equanimity will pay huge dividends in terms of your ability to reach your training goals and deliver your best when it matters most.

The analogy with physical core strength In mental training as in physical is apt. Just as the abdominals, obliques, training, don’t neglect your C.O.R.E.! and lower back muscles supporting the spine provides the foundation for physical stability, the four mental qualities described here provide the foundation for mental stability by supporting effective regulation of attention and emotions while also serving as a protective factor against fear, fatigue, frustration, self-doubt, and burnout. This article is also intended to serve as a jumping-off point for a more in-depth look at each of these concepts. TRINITY ROCKS COACH LOOKS BACK ON 2019 KHSAA BASKETBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP Writer / Kelsey Schneider Photographer / Scott Scinta

Earlier this year, on Sunday, March 10th the Trinity High School Rocks and the Scott County Cardinals opposed one another on the Rupp Arena court, shooting on their defender’s hoop while obstructing the opposite from shooting in their hoop. During the entire season, Rock Nation supported and proudly cheered on the

Trinity Basketball Rocks’ solid team. Mostly Trinity students, 11,967 fans watched as their peers won the 2019 KHSAA Sweet 16 Boys Basketball State Championship. At Trinity High School, Head Coach Mike Szabo’s basketball team was on a path to greatness. Trinity’s athletics program provides challenges, confidence and strength for the

Basketball Rocks. The basketball program was established in 1954 and in 2004, the team won its first regional basketball title after beating Male. “The team was an absolute joy to play with and be around,” says Mike Szabo. “I had a lot of fun with them.” Versus traditionally strong programs, the Basketball Rocks faced a challenging

schedule at the beginning of their season. Accompanied by three returning starters and players with lots of inexperience, the Rocks were scheduled to play against teams like Fern Creek, Scott County, Male, Lexington Catholic, Bullitt East and Henry Clay, to name a few. Trinity would once again be a participant in two of the finest holiday basketball tournaments in the nation, the King of the Bluegrass, a tournament held in Kentucky that the Rocks won twice before. Trinity won the King of the Bluegrass once in 2009 and again in 2016. The team finished as runner-ups last season. The Arby’s Classic, held in Bristol, Tennessee a top regional tournament won in 2016. The season’s goals were to compete for a Seventh Region Championship and get a trip to Rupp Arena for the KHSAA State Championship. Trinity lost 29-4 in the previous year and, according to their coach, the team was hungry to get back.

The Trinity Basketball Rocks had an incredible season. Trinity played Scott County in the 2019 KHSAA Sweet 16 Boys Basketball State Championship and won with an ending score of 50-40. The Rocks finished the season as state champions with a record of 29-8. Coach Szabo says the team had a great start. Coach Szabo’s best player, David Johnson then hurt his knee against Collins in the semifinals of the King of the Bluegrass and wasn’t able to play in the second half of the game. Johnson was out during the toughest time of the season and missed five games. Johnson has signed to be one of the lead guards for the Louisville Cardinals this season. “David was an absolute joy to play with and be around,” Szabo says. “I had a lot of fun and really enjoy what I do. Every guy was a great guy with a great attitude, the parents as well. They were supportive of

me and the staff and were all about our team and basketball.” During the season, Waggener basketball beat Trinity for the 27th District Tournament title during their game at Atherton High School. The Waggener Wildcats had won eleven straight games in a row when they badly beat Trinity. Both teams were still able to advance to the Seventh Region tournament.

“The Regional Tournament was great,” Szabo says. “It was a great win at Male. We played the most talented teams in our Region.” Trinity advanced to the 7th Region semifinals with a 57-47 win over Male at Male. “We had a task in front of us to beat Scott County. Scott County’s coach is an incredible coach, one of Kentucky’s best ever,” Szabo says.

David Johnson won MVP honors. “David was so coachable and always open to what was best for our team,” Szabo says. “He’s got the best career of anyone at Trinity I’ve coached. Tremendous talent, great person, great teammate. I think he’s going to do great things at the Uof L program and get them to National Championships.” Once a baseball pitcher, Coach Szabo started his teaching career at Washington College Academy in Limestone, Tennessee, a small private boarding school. At the school, he was the Director of Athletics, head coach for the baseball team and the basketball team. Szabo was studying basketball at the University of Tennessee under head coach Kevin O’Neill who’s currently the men’s basketball head coach at the University of Southern California. Szabo then went on to take the job as head basketball coach at the Fort Worth Country Day School. After 18 years at Trinity, coach Szabo has

completed his second state championship (the first in 2012). His trip to Rupp Arena marks his sixth time during his tenure that Trinity has captured the 7th Region crown and advanced to the KHSAA Sweet 16. Coach Szabo explains how he should’ve called a timeout during his state championship victory but seconded himself. He says other coaches in Kentucky are so competitive and that’s what made the season so fun.

“I don’t have to beat myself up for the next six months,” he says. “I was really proud, it was a gratifying feeling with no negative thoughts. The ending of the season was really bittersweet. Walking into the gym the following weekend I wished we were still practicing.” Trinity Basketball Rocks were not just lucky, but beyond blessed. Their coach says they became champions by being consistent, helping everyone on the team and being dedicated to being the very best.
