HURT & HEALING: JHS SENIOR & CANCER SURVIVOR IS HELPING OTHER PATIENTS THROUGH TOILETRY DRIVES
Good housekeeping facilitates good health. A clean, sanitary environment is especially important to families caring for a child receiving treatment for cancer. However, maintaining a stock of household products and cleaning supplies can be elusive to caregivers who are busy monitoring and managing their child’s health care. Jace Hurt, who was treated for cancer in 2015-2016, knows the importance of a clean home to minimize risk of infection to the patient.

TREBLE MAKERS YOUNG JEFFERSONTOWN MUSICIANS CREATE MOVING MELODIES Writers / Kathryn Wigger & Ashley Sumner
When you walk through the doors of Farmer Elementary and Tully Elementary before school on Tuesday and Thursday mornings the sound of music fills the halls. You see students engaged and actively making music, singing, dancing, playing instruments and improvising. You hear students behind xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels and drums playing, creating and composing melodies and rhythms together. These are the student musicians of the Treble Makers Orff Ensemble. The Treble Makers Orff Ensemble is a group of musicians made up of third, fourth and fifth grade students from Farmer Elementary and Tully Elementary in Jeffersontown, directed by Ashley Sumner and Kathryn Wigger. This group of young musicians performs, creates and improvises
using xylophones, recorders and percussion instruments while also integrating movement and speech. These young musicians are productive collaborators as they work effectively to accomplish the common goal of music making, even though they are at two different schools. Using FaceTime and written music notation, students create and compose together, giving each other thoughtful and meaningful feedback on compositions and musical creations. Students not only practice separately at their own schools but also practice at a central location that allows students to meet and make music together. This unique collaboration offers students who attend these public schools in Jeffersontown the opportunity to make music and form lasting friendships, while growing into emerging innovators. They ask each other musical questions, they challenge one another and together
they seek to learn and take musical risks, making adjustments that result in beautiful music that is creative and innovative. Musicians in the Treble Makers are taught using the Orff Schulwerk approach and perform music by Carl Orff, as well as music they have created themselves. Orff Schulwerk is Music for Children. It is a model for music and movement education that offers opportunity for active and creative music making by all children. Developed by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman, the Orff Schulerk builds musicianship through singing, playing instruments, speech, movement and improvising. Through the Orff Schulwerk, musicians become prepared and resilient learners, demonstrating musical knowledge, reflecting on their musical successes and challenges and making appropriate adjustments in order to grow musically.

The Treble Makers enjoy performing for their community. Throughout the school year, the Treble Makers not only perform in their schools for their peers but also perform for community events, such as playing Christmas Carols at local health facilities, performing at the Festival of Trees and Lights and performing for music educators at the Kentucky Orff Schulwerk Association and the Kentucky Music Educators Association Convention. Performing outside their local schools allows the Treble Makers to give back and share their love of music with their local community. It allows them to pause where they are in their learning process to showcase their musical skills and reflect on the hard work and dedication it takes to be music makers and learners. The directors of the Treble Makers are Kathryn Wigger and Ashley Sumner. Wigger is the music teacher at Tully Elementary and Sumner is the music teacher at Farmer Elementary. The two met

eight years ago while completing their Orff Schulwerk Certification at the University of Kentucky. Wanting to enhance their school music programs, they created a combined Orff Ensemble that has grown over the years from a small ensemble, that only performed once a year, to what is now the Treble Makers. Wigger is currently in her ninth year as the music teacher at Tully Elementary, teaching general music k-5. Kathryn was named the 2017-18 Jefferson County Public Schools music teacher of the year. She received her Bachelors in Harp Performance from New England Conservatory of Music and a Masters in Secondary Education from Xavier University. She is a Nationally Board Certified teacher. Sumner graduated from Murray State University with a Bachelors Degree in Music Education and from Walden University with a Masters in Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. Sumner is currently in her 14th year teaching in Jefferson County Public Schools and is currently teaching general music at Farmer Elementary to students k-5. The Treble Makers are honored to be invited to play at the Jeffersontown Family Performing Arts Night, organized by Rhonda Rowland-Jeffersontown Arts Program Manager, on Friday, February 15 from 7:00-9:00 p.m. They will be playing pieces from “Music for Children” by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman, arranged specifically for the Treble Makers by ensemble directors Kathryn Wigger and Ashley Sumner. In these pieces, students will improvise and perform melodies and rhythms together, as to showcase their musicianship and confidence in music making. Jeffersontown Family Performing Arts Night will be at the Jeffersonian. Wheeler Elementary will open the performance, singing old favorites from “Get America Singing” from Hal Leonard by John Jacobson. Louisville Trio will accompany the Wheeler students who are directed by Sara Manchak, Integrated Music Teacher. The community is also invited to join the Treble Makers at their Spring performance on Thursday, April 18 at 6:00 at Tully Elementary School. 8 / JEFFERSONTOWN MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2019 / JeffersontownMag.com

SKUVAULT IS FAST BECOMING A MAJOR PLAYER IN THE E-COMMERCE WORLD Writer / Mallory Wright
Our area is full of companies. Companies on the rise, companies rebuilding from a hard hit and companies struggling to stay afloat. Among these companies, the east end houses many mom and pop shops, enterprise level health care facilities, midsize industrial equipment farms, boutiques. You name it and we have it. But what we also have that many people aren’t aware of is a company established and created to help other companies —SkuVault. SkuVault, a warehouse management system, rebuilt from the ground-up on Microsoft’s Cloud and catered towards eCommerce companies, SkuVault’s product was created and branded in late 2011 and launched to
market in 2012. The goal of SkuVault was to create a system that sellers would love and was simple to use. They empire business to business and business to customer companies to optimize their operations at a fraction of their cost. Some of the features of this software include reducing out of stock errors with quality control, simplifying the picking process for warehouse workers, streamlining purchases and lessening time spent on physical re-allocation of products. The main pain points that many large warehouse companies experience, SkuVault strives to alleviate. And the brains behind this business started right in our backyard. Growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, Andy Eastes was one of the “Highlands/ Skateboard kids” as he called himself. When FEBRUARY 2019
he was in middle school, Eastes and his best friend Matt Kubancik, were always on the prowl for avenues to make money. They would raid their parents’ attic and their friends’ parents’ attic always looking for the next hidden gem they could sell. Once they exhausted their options of attics to rummage through, they would hit up the neighborhood yard sales. The saying, “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure,” hit home for them from a business perspective and the two young men were climbing the entrepreneurship ladder quickly. Over time, Eastes and Kubancik took their browsing abilities to the next level by going to outlet stores. It was there that the idea of their business started to take off and they found a mentor who helped them
with their very own start-up business, Street Moda. They evolved from bargain shoppers to account holders with companies and dealing with vendors. Near the end of high school, Eastes was still working the side business but knew college would require his undivided attention. Kubancik continued to manage the business and had attempted to build a custom system for better efficiency but needed some assistance. Eastes was now attending the University of Louisville Speed School for Industrial Engineering where he started learning how to develop custom software solutions for manufacturing companies. Companies consistently were facing the common challenge with their warehouse items and organizational structure — a lack thereof an operating system or software that could speed up efficiency. It was then that Eastes, Kubancik and now Slava Ivanyuk combined forces to build a product — a warehouse management system. Something that they realized they needed and many others would desire. Since then, SkuVault has grown from a startup of four in a 50-square foot closet of a partner company to a thriving and growing business of more than 70 fulltime employees in an 8,500 square foot building in the east end. In 2017, they had a 44.12 percent increase in revenue and received an average satisfaction rating for support of 91.8 percent. Eastes now serves as COO, Ivanyuk as the CTO and Kubancik is actually a client of SkuVault. Their business reaches across five continents, 41 countries and 326 cities. Last year alone, SkuVault closed 67 deals with 66 of those deals being closed with a handshake.

Six years since they have opened their doors, the company has continued to evolve. They have launched their first local marketing campaign in efforts to gain relationships and customers here in the local area. When attending conferences and events across the globe, most people are perplexed to hear about SkuVault being located in Kentucky. ‘Wait, you’re a software development company in Kentucky? Shouldn’t you be in Silicon Valley or something?’ Is the common question faced to Eastes, with his response quickly being “No, we’re a logistics company creating custom solutions located in Louisville, Kentucky,” unto which many people understand that statement much better. Eastes enjoys that most of his time spent is now with the customers and clients as opposed to behind closed doors like most COO’s. He’s proud to say that their company, “Provides the right tools for success for other companies.”

SkuVault harbors a loyalty to their customers that exceeds expectations, taking an active role in helping to develop their customers’ business with them. SkuVault is reaching beyond the realm of satisfaction with their clients. As stated on their company website, “SkuVault harbors a loyalty to their customers that exceeds expectations, taking an active role in helping to develop their customers’ business with them.” This type of service isn’t achieved by one individual but by a company that stands together on their core values and their efforts to make an impact locally. One of the ways they’re doing this is their commitment to working with TechHire — the Obama administration’s initiative to connect middle-class Americans to technology jobs. They’re doing this by hiring locally, partnering with YMCA Safe Place and Dayspring Community Living and participating in Louisville GLI, Code Louisville, YEC and Endeavor Louisville. Even through all the involvement and growth of SkuVault, when you ask Eastes what makes him most proud, it isn’t the client list or even the achievements. But the company and culture he has helped create. He doesn’t reference his employees as employees but as teammates. He believes the way he treats his teammates is a “direct reflection of how they will treat clients and how they will welcome strangers inside their building.” His goal for 2018 is to build and foster more relationships here locally in Kentucky and in Louisville. Producer & Host Kimberly Greenwell
MY SOUTHERN HOME Local Producer Kimberly Greenwell Talks Excitement of New TV Show Airing This Spring Writer / Angela Partee . Photographer / Patricia Longmire
here is no place like your home sweet home. Whether you’re looking for a new home or need tips on renovating your home, “My Southern Home,” television show is your home coach. The show airs in Louisville, KY on CW 58 Sunday at 10 am. and in Nashville, TN on MYTV 30 on Saturdays at 10 a.m. A new show will begin airing in Lexington, KY on April 2019. The show is created, hosted and produced by Kimberly Greenwell and features information from builders, contractors and home improvement vendors. Greenwell, originally from Bardstown, KY, resides in Louisville. She is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University. After graduation, she worked for Landmark Community Newspapers for a year and a half, then worked for WAVE-TV 3 for seven years. She was recruited by Borrell Associates to be an interactive media consultant. She helped television stations launch their internet ads. She also taught their interactive ad platforms and helped them sell ads. It was work that prepared her for her own show. “Basically, all that background has enabled me to do what I have been doing right now,” she says. “I would never have thought back then that I would have my own television show. It wasn’t something that was in the front of my mind.” During the time she worked at Borrell, the market fell out of the industry. She was laid off. While she was laid off, she decided to start her own company, KAG Media Consulting, LLC. Around 2011, she landed a contract with the Home Builders Association of Greater Louisville. She
helped them with member-to-member marketing, advertising and public relations for their big events – Homearama and the Home, Garden and Remodeling Show. Meanwhile, WBNA 21 was looking for a home show host. “Towards the end of 2014, out of the blue, I got a call asking if I wanted my own television show on WBNA-21 in the home industry,” Greenwell says. “And I was like, ‘Of course I do!’ It kind of fell out of the blue but everything that I had done up to that point made the position for me. So, I started meeting with WBNA-21 and we came up with the name “Your Kentuckiana Home.” I basically started the show from the ground up for them. The first show of “Your Kentuckiana Home” aired in April 2015. Last summer, some creative issues prompted Greenwell to go to the general manager to express her interest in managing
the show and he agreed. “So basically My Southern Home was born,” she says. “Your Kentuckiana Home” stopped airing in July of 2017 and the first episode of “My Southern Home,” under my company’s ownership (KAG Media Consulting, LLC) and my leadership began in August 2017.” Southern in the show’s title refers to the region. “What was cool, the Friday before the first show Vinny Barber with the Barber Cabinet Co., called me and said, “Hey, would you be interested in bringing the show to Nashville and Lexington? And I said yes, I would, so before the first show had aired I had expanded already,” Greenwell says. “It took me a while to get to those markets because at the same time I was launching My Southern Home, I was also starting the first reality television show that aired in Louisville, called Renovating Kentuckiana. “It was the first reality show which aired in Louisville that was shot at our station about home improvement. The beginning of this year I had an hour block of home improvement television that was all mine. The first from 12 to 12:30 was My Southern Home, the second from 12:30 to 1 p.m. was

“I make it a point before we go on camera to talk to clients about what they want to talk about,” Greenwell says. “So, they kind of know, we’re talking about things that they talk about every day. My goal is to help them tell their story.”
Greenwell wants to help people renovate. She says there are little things that can be done to satisfy the craving for something new. For example, she suggests buying a brand-new shower curtain and some towels ($50). It completely changes the bathroom, giving you something new.
The goal is for the Lexington show to start in April 2019. The Louisville and Nashville shows’ new season will start March 2019. The show runs two seasons a year: Spring is March, April and May and Fall season is September, October and November. Reruns of the previous season are aired in the summer.

Hurt & Healing LOCAL SENIOR & CANCER SURVIVOR IS HELPING OTHER PATIENTS THROUGH TOILETRY DRIVES Writer / Angela Partee
He also experienced the thoughtfulness of others who provided household products to his family. So, he decided to help other pediatric cancer families in a similar way. Hurt collected household products and distributed them at the University of Louisville Pediatric Oncology Unit last December. He plans another collection drive this fall. Hurt, a high school senior, began his
journey with cancer in 2015 when he discovered a little knot on the side of his face. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He received chemotherapy and is currently in remission. The diagnosis was a defining moment.
there. You never expect the doctor to say, ‘hey your child has cancer.’ It was hard. I have three other kids. I had a grandbaby on the way. My oldest daughter was living at home too, so there was a ton of stuff going on.”
“During the time I was going through It was during chemotherapy that Jace chemotherapy I was humbled,” he says. noticed a need common to pediatric cancer Teresa Hurt, his mother says he is doing great. patient families. He says his mother’s friend had brought them household items such as “He did really good with chemotherapy,” wipes, toilet paper and more. she says. “He had rounds December 2015 through March 2016. It was very helpful.” “It’s an emotional roller coaster,” she says. “You see all these ads, like for St. Jude and Teresa echoed Jace’s feelings of gratitude for you feel compelled to give $10 here, $25 the household items. “I had a kid at home getting I-V fluids, and I was trying to learn how to be a nurse,” she says. “I had no clue what I was doing. You got this guilt, you got other kids that you have got to take care of, and I just didn’t have time. So many times, I thought I am so glad I have this. Other people from my work would drop things off and a lot of the things were household things and he remembered that, and he was like, ‘Mom, you know what, that is something the hospital didn’t provide. The volunteers always came through and made sure I had stuff, but nobody was really looking out for the moms. I saw that helped you a lot and I want to see if I can do a fundraiser where I can help the parents of kids that are going through cancer treatments so that they can spend more time with their kids.’”
Jace Hurt
The toiletry drive is a prescription for the stress caregivers experience. “The term is caregiver strain,” Teresa says. “It happens to a lot of people. The type of thing where they get overwhelmed. It is a little special in the Oncology Department because you never know how many days your child has, and you don’t want to leave that baby’s side to go home and get toothpaste. Many times, we would see parents come into the Oncology Unit and you could tell they haven’t washed their hair. They probably couldn’t go to the store.” Last year, Jace set up the items by the nurses’ station in the Oncology Unit for people to take what they needed. The items were available for a week or two. He had intended to give a basket of supplies to at

least 50 families, but they didn’t receive enough donations. Jace is planning on conducting the drive again soon. Teresa says Jace is a better person because of his experience with cancer. “I’m really proud of him,” she says. “I love him. I see God in him. I am just excited for the man he’s going to become. I look at him and I respect the person that he is. He just wants to help people. I am proud of him. I really am.” She’s grateful for all the help they have received. “Even the little gestures people did, it really helped out more than people understand,” she adds. “It put a smile on everybody’s face. We had a ton of community support and I will never be able to pay anybody back for it. I just want to say thank you.” Since he is a senior, Jace realizes that this would be his last opportunity to operate the drive, but he would love to see the drive implemented as one of his high school’s annual drives. Outside school and work, his other interests include playing basketball, video games and fishing. He plans on attending college and pursuing a career in engineering. Right now, he is focused on engineering support for pediatric families. He offers encouragement to pediatric patients. “I would remind the child of the strength they have and of the beauty in their fight because through their fight they are building strength and character,” he says. “And just from battling cancer they have built the strength to get through anything.” He advises parents of pediatric patients to take time to care for themselves. He shares insight with those who want to provide support to the families. “My message to anyone wanting to offer support to families affected by pediatric cancer would be to keep in mind that these families put a lot of stress, time and money into maintaining a child’s health,” Jace says. “When you’re looking for the best way to offer support think of some things you could do that would make the family have to worry less about either of these things.” He also reflects on the lessons learned from his fight with cancer.
We had a ton of community support and I will never be able to pay anybody back for it. I just want to say thank you.
“Having cancer taught me to fight,” Jace says. “It showed me that there is hope in the toughest times. My health has taught me to dream bigger than I ever thought was possible before.” FEBRUARY 2019
BLUE HALO MED SPA 8104 Old Bardstown Road 502-690-6029 bluehalomedspa.com/liposuction
From the moment you step inside Blue Halo Med Spa, you embark on a journey of pampering and internal wellness. Since opening in 2015, the medical spa has focused on results-oriented, minimallyinvasive surgical procedures and treatments to restore the youthfulness of a person’s body, face and overall health. “We try to treat our customer’s mind, body and soul, the whole person,” says Owner Rhonda Hatfield. In addition to offering massages, facials and other treatments, Blue Halo’s qualified staff can provide state-of-the-art AquaShape® by body-jet® Water-jet Assisted Liposuction treatments. The process is used to remove pockets of stubborn fat that are difficult to address through diet and exercise, using a water stream that disconnects fat cells from the body. Compared to traditional liposuction procedures, water lipo can offer even more results and shorter recovery time, with fewer side effects. The fat cells can even be implanted in other parts of the body in place of artificial fillers. Patients are not put under general anesthesia, which also helps alleviate some of the risks that come with traditional lipo treatments.
“Dr. Penne-Casanova is very much an artist,” says Hatfield, who has undergone the water lipo treatment herself. “He has a lot of experience and knows how to mold and contour the body for the best results.” Hatfield always stayed away from fitted dresses, even when she was at her most fit, because scoliosis caused a curve in her spine that left the sides of her back uneven. “It wasn’t a big deal, but I didn’t realize how much better it made me feel until after I did the procedure,” Hatfield says. “After the doctor did the fat transfer and contouring, I feel comfortable wearing fitted clothing now.” The confidence Hatfield regained from the procedure is something that has fueled her desire to help others look and feel their best. “If you look better, you feel better,” she adds. Before committing to the treatment, customers are invited to sit down for a private, free consultation to discuss the risks and rewards of water lipo in a no-pressure environment. Pricing is affordable but depends on the areas to be treated.
“The water lipo is the best device on the market if you’re doing any kind of fat transfer,” Hatfield says. Procedures are performed by Dr. PenneCasanova, a board-certified doctor trained on the most advanced aesthetic and cosmetic procedures using the finest equipment. FEBRUARY 2019
Blue Halo prioritizes health and safety. All of their tools are sterile, and Hatfield invests in disposable, one-time use products when she can. Anyone interested in learning more about water lipo is invited to an information session on February 12 at 6:30 p.m. at Blue Halo Med Spa’s facility at 8104 Old Bardstown Road in Fern Creek. NEW JHS PRINCIPAL JARRAD DURHAM TALKS GOALS FOR 2019 & BEYOND Writer / Sarah Showalter, JHS Senior
You’ll find him observing in classrooms, interacting with students in the lunchroom and leading various meetings. He greets every student with a nod and, “How are you doing?” He guides his staff with humble leadership. He is Principal Jarrad Durham, and he came to Jeffersontown High School with a purpose. Although Durham is new to J-town, he is certainly not without experience. Before coming to Jeffersontown in April of 2018, he worked in various positions from teaching social studies at Westport Middle, to being the assistant principal at Fern Creek High
School. Right off the bat, the major difference person has the opportunity for something, he noticed in J-town was the size of the whether it be college, military or workforce school. simply snapped a picture of the ideas, then immediately erased it all. How can you get anything done when a brainstorm of scribbles and abstract thoughts are looking over your shoulders, taunting you about when you’ll have time for them? Durham knew he and his team could not progress in a way that would be beneficial to the school with everyone scrambling to get these ideas finished. He figured out what the greatest concerns were and started with student safety. The first step taken to make the J-town campus more secure was a gate that wraps around one entire side of the school. This gate enables students to pass through different outdoor entrances, such as the gym or music department and to the main building. This gate also prevents an intruder from coming in. Beyond the vision of security, Durham has a clear vision that engages every single student in the school. His primary goal for

the school is to make progression in the field of technology. Many adults will look at technology and be intimidated because of the power it holds and the capabilities it has. Durham, however, embraces the power it comes with and sees the headway it has made so far, and wishes to continue that with each class that comes into JHS. “I truly believe that every student should have access to a computer at some point during every class throughout the day,” he says. The advances that the school is looking to make will greatly improve students’ engagement in the classroom. With the direct instruction that technology will enable, teachers will be able to give students exactly when
they need, when they need it, regardless of other students’ level in the class. Durham’s vision for technology in the school will only aid the connection between student and knowledge. Given that technological advances will help this relationship, the school must also look to the community for help. Like Durham mentioned, students want to know that a career is available for them when coming out of high school. This is why the community is constantly asking for new student employees. Durham’s key is communication, saying, “It’s a give and take relationship. We make sure we are communicating what we need, and at the same time, we are serving the needs of the community. We are raising up the next generation of workers.”
