LET’S EMBRACE OPTIMISM FOR BETTER TIMES IN 2021
rospects for spring are much brighter in 2021 than last year — and for that we are very grateful. Our community has lived through the toughest times this generation has known in the past year. I believe we are stronger people for enduring all that 2020 sent our way. This spring as the trees bud and flowers bloom we can take a collective deep breath and ideally be making plans for summer vacations and a return to all types of recreational activities we’ve missed. Things bode well for the 2021 holidays as well as gatherings with family and friends are likely to be closer to the enjoyable moments from years past. On the other side of difficult experiences, we can look for silver linings. We know self-care practices that help us stay healthier. We know brilliant scientists can work quickly to develop vaccines. We know our health care communities and first responders come through for the people they serve even at their own peril. We also know we have challenges to address to unite as fellow Americans. I believe we have the resolve to do just that. As we emerge from dark days, we have choices to make. Will we live just like we did in the past? Or will we have a new lens on life? What if we choose to be kinder people? What if we smile more and encourage others whether friend or stranger? What if we are more accepting of people who have different opinions from us. That’s the kind of world I hope emerges as spring arrives this year. RUMPKE REMINDS RESIDENTS ABOUT LIMITS ON CART USE, YARD WASTE GUIDELINES Rumpke Waste & Recycling, the contract vendor that serves the City of Jeffersontown, says residents have two options for regular pickups: 2 trash carts and 1 recycling cart OR 1 trash cart and 2 recycling carts per household. Use of more carts will incur additional charges. Also, yard yaste may be placed in empty trash carts. Only shrubbery, grass, weeds, leaves and sticks are accepted. Brendan Kelly, owner of Archadeck of Louisville, is a man of many talents. Though he holds a degree in graphic design and fine arts, he was eager to find a way to create what he calls usable art. “I wanted to create a place you can use, but that is also beautiful,” says Kelly, who in 2016 became an owner in the 40-year-old national franchise. Archadeck of Louisville serves all of Louisville and the surrounding communities. When Kelly was looking into starting a franchise, he considered what was important to him, and outdoor living topped the list. This endeavor was the perfect fit for his passion, ambitions and diverse skill set. “I never thought of this work as construction,” he says. “Designing and building decks enabled me to be outdoors and utilize my degree in a unique way.” Though Kelly is relatively new to the business, his crew is skilled and seasoned, having built hundreds of decks throughout the last 15 to 20 years. For Kelly, maintaining the structural integrity of the product is of paramount importance, and it’s what sets him apart from many other outdoor deck and porch builders. Instead of doing the minimum, he and his crew go above and beyond. For example, local building code states that decks are only supposed to meet 40 pounds per square foot, at a minimum. Kelly and his crew try to hit 60, which means they do
one and a half times what is required. This is important because decks that are built incorrectly simply won’t last. “I’ve seen hundreds, if not thousands, of decks that have not been built correctly,” says Kelly, who estimates that 80 to 90% of decks are not built up to modern code. “The biggest faux pas is when you have a column and there’s a beam on top of it, you really should notch the top of the column that’s holding the deck up. A lot of times they are bolted or nailed to the side of the post so the entire deck is basically held up by six bolts. You should notch it so the beams are sitting on top of the post. That way the whole post would have to disintegrate for the deck to fail.” In addition, his carpentry crew is experienced at framing and trim work. “A deck is structural, yet it has to look nice with finishing touches,” Kelly says. Specializing in custom decks, open porches, screened patios, paver patios and sunrooms, they also do pergolas and fire features, which have increased in popularity this year. Prior to owning Archadeck, Kelly was a teacher of religion, having attended seminary and earned a theology degree. He and his wife Leah have three children, Clare (5), Luke (4), and Monica (6 months). He decided to switch gears and try something new, which he admits was a bit nerve wracking, but he’s been pleased with the result. “I’m proud of what we can accomplish as a crew,” Kelly says. “I love this business and the people I work with.” MARCH 2021 / 9

In January a new prime-time series hit the air on the FOX network, one that has a special connection to Louisville. The new series is “Call Me Kat,” starring “The Big Bang Theory” alum Dr. Mayim Bialik, who is known for her roles in the movie “Beaches” and on her own series, “Blossom,” which aired in the 1990s. The new series is based in Louisville and the main character, Kat, is a 39-year-old single woman who owns a cat cafe (in case

She got a part playing a munchkin in a production of “The Wizard of Oz.” “That was such a huge, crazy thrill,” she recalls. When asked if she’d ever performed at the Derby Dinner Playhouse in Clarksville, Indiana, she replies, “I can’t sing and I can’t dance, so musical theater wasn’t an option. If I could sing and dance I wouldn’t have left. I thought theme parks were the be-all and end-all of performing. If I could sing and dance I’d be at Dollywood right now in a show. I would have just lived and died in
Sevierville, Tennessee.” After high school Hunt decided to go to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, to study theater. She’d been advised by a high school counselor to attend that university, plus she received advice from Moses Goldberg from StageOne to go there as well. “I think Northwestern taught us a lot about paving our own way and creating our own performance experiences,” she says. Hunt appeared in various plays during her college years, plus she and her friends

would create and produce their own small productions to perform. “We wrote a children’s show and ended up touring to various states and schools,” she recalls. That was her first experience with writing and getting paid for it. “To this day, I probably still make $25 a year from that show,” she says. Hunt continued on, doing what she calls ‘metaphorical tap-dancing,’ to find work in
from Northwestern, and we performed it in and around Los Angeles.” This friend happened to be friends with actor Sean Hayes, who was starring in the NBC comedy “Will & Grace” at the time. “Sean came to see the show and was like, ‘I love that so much! Can I be in it with you?’” Hunt recalls. “I was like, ‘What is happening?’” Hunt wrote a part for Hayes, a ‘Kentucky guy’ character, as she describes it.

her Screen Actors Guild card. Her next move was to Los Angeles. Her big break occurred in the early 2000s. “I had an idea for a play - sort of a comedic, 45-minute kind of series of sketches, or oneact plays,” she says. “I did it with a friend

there were agents there who discovered that Hunt had great talent as a writer, and who wanted her to sign on to work with them. “The creators of ‘Will & Grace’ also came to see the show and they asked me to write an episode for the show,” Hunt says. “That was my first writing assignment.” The episode was titled, “Dyeing is Easy, Comedy is Hard.” Hunt says her writing career turned towards selling television pilot ideas to networks. “It was exciting, but they were never picked up to go to series,” she says. She then pitched the pilot of “The Big C” to Showtime and it was picked up.
roles she holds producing “Call Me Kat.” It’s been a perfect fit. “I had tried to pitch shows that were set in a more rural area, to sort of honor the rural area where I grew up,” Hunt explains. “I wanted this show to be a little more urban than that, but I didn’t want it to be in New York or L.A. It should feel kind of more normal.” She saw her new series as a chance to honor Kentucky, so she pitched the idea of setting it in Louisville. “I gave Mayim the opportunity to change that if the idea of Louisville didn’t speak to her,” Hunt says. “She’s from San Diego, so I told her we could set it there, but she had just come from visiting Louisville and she was on board with the setting. She was like, ‘Louisville is so cool and so great.’ ”
“It was my first experience selling to a cable network,” she says. Hunt does what she can to incorporate Hunt’s hard work and tenacity through the years definitely prepared her for the multiple Louisville landmarks into her show.
“I’ve never written a show where I’ve referenced the town so many times,” she says. “I’m just doing that instinctively because I love shouting out to Louisville.” If you’re wondering what those shout-outs entail, references have been made to the University of Louisville, the characters being “Cards” fans, Churchill Downs, The Brown Hotel, the Courier-Journal, and bourbon tasting. “I hope people will stick with our show,” Hunt says. “TV is kind of a living, breathing thing and it evolves and moves forward, and I feel like we’re just hitting our stride. I hope people become invested, as we really want to tell this genuine story of a woman of a certain age that may not be totally represented on TV. There’s a lot of heart in the show. It’s a bit of a love letter to Louisville.” Call me Kat airs Thursdays at 9/8 C on Fox.

with the organization. Her younger brother Matthew has Down syndrome and had been a client there for a number of years. During her internship she had a firsthand account and insight into what Cedar Lake Lodge does for the community and for clients. She was ensconced in the depth of care for people who often do not have the same advantages as others, due to conditions beyond their choice and, often, understanding.

Cedar Lake Lodge has been in the Louisville area for 50 years, providing assistance to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With a workforce of over 450 employees, some having been with the organization for 40-plus years, one can imagine the dedication, drive and empathy that these caregivers have for their clients and patients who come to Cedar Lake Lodge to heal, learn and grow. One such person is Tara Oliver, who serves as director of corporate and foundation relations for this revered organization. Oliver didn’t start at that level - she worked her way up through the ranks beginning as an intern when she attended the University of Louisville. Before her time at U of L, she had been
attending Kentucky Wesleyan College under an academic scholarship in biology, with a focus on becoming a research geneticist. After two years at Wesleyan, Oliver felt this was not the right direction for her career. She came back to Louisville and took some time off from the collegiate world, and resumed her work with Kentuckiana Allergy, where she worked during summers off from Jeffersontown High School and college.
When Oliver went back into the workforce, she was ready to create her own identity, and she worked with organizations like Path Forward, who had similar programs to Cedar Lake Lodge, such as job placement services. While she enjoyed her work there, she felt a calling to make it back to Cedar Lake. Having completed the internship, Oliver was certainly known there among the management, and she expressed interest in working there in the marketing and communications department. It wasn’t long before Cedar Lake asked her to come on board. Starting in the marketing and communications department, Oliver’s talents quickly earned her a rise within the organization, always in a fundraising mode and sometimes serving as the sole person in the department. Her eight years with Cedar Lake have been some of the most rewarding of her professional life.
When asked about how her work has coincided with her brother being a client, Oliver is quick to share that she is able to be successful because of Matthew’s success. Through these support options, the Cedar Lake residences were formed. Within these residences, Cedar Lake tenants go about their daily lives just like we all do - they tidy up the house, go to work, play some video games, hang out with friends, and go to dinner. These are the types of achievements that prove to Cedar Lake Lodge and its vast range of clientele and supporters how invaluable their services are.

While Matthew loves movies, he is also an artist. Oliver shares that he loves to draw and that his family has several of his pieces hanging on the walls of their respective residences. While drawing is a favorite medium for her brother, she also mentions that he is into clay and pottery. In fact, his artistic work has been on display for Zoom Group, which showcases the talents of artists like Matthew.

Like many other parents, there was fear of how their son would develop and navigate adulthood. Fortunately, Cedar Lake Lodge offered the services that would enable Matthew to grow and learn. He lives in an apartment that is part of the Cedar Lake facilities, of which there are 36, including several in the St. Matthews and Jeffersontown area. The housing that has been developed allows freedom and socialization for its residents. Aside from living on his own, Matthew holds jobs at both Rainbow Blossom and Cinemark Theatres.

And yes, Matthew is certainly one of those success stories. Unfortunately, that wasn’t always the case. Oliver shares that when Matthew was born, he didn’t cry. As he was diagnosed with Down syndrome, it was suggested that he go to a special facility. What a hard decision for a parent who has a special needs child.

in raising money for this worthy cause, and that is part of what makes Oliver’s career challenging. She is always in a fundraising frame of mind and relishes the opportunity to share the success of Cedar Lake. It doesn’t hurt that she has had a bevy of support from others regarding the often-choppy waters of raising money, and she shares her appreciation for working with Jim Evans for a time, who is wellversed in the waves of that particular sea. We, as a society, have changed dramatically from the earliest days of Cedar Lake Lodge’s creation. There was a time that the word “retarded” was used as a blanket term to describe someone with developmental difficulty. “That word is not a part of our vocabulary, and when I hear it in conversation, I do my best to explain to the user of the harm that the word exhibits to its intended subject,” Oliver says. “Our vision is of a community where those with and without disabilities learn to share and enrich each other’s
lives through meaningful interactions that cultivate mutual respect and unconditional love. We live the mantra of unconditional love each and every day that we spend with these marvelous people, and we are the better for it.” While Cedar Lake Lodge has been a big part of Oliver’s life, she has become involved in other activities. She currently serves on the Jeffersontown High School Scholarship Board and is deeply involved in Tully Elementary’s parent-teacher association (PTA). She shares that at Tully, PTA involvement is a very important expectation of parents. Also, Oliver and her family welcomed Lina, a foreign exchange student from outside Frankfurt, Germany. She attended Jeffersontown High School until this past March, when she went back home due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The city of Louisville has an extensive range of dining options, ranging from pizza joints to some of the top restaurants in the commonwealth, and even the country. Although we love patronizing our regular hangouts and culinary mainstays, it’s always a tasty treat when restaurateurs take the plunge and open a new establishment.
He had been the owner of a Thrifty Car Rental for eight years, and says that in August of 2001 he’d actually had his best month with rentals. After the attack on the World Trade Center, he had to shut down.

Any time someone asks, ‘Now, where are you located?’ I’ll say, ‘Do you know where Tumbleweed’s used to be in Plainview?’ and they’ll say, ‘Oh yeah!’”
“I had to close that business and find something else to do,” he says.
Putting the restaurant together for its grand opening took a great deal of work.
This past June, after waiting several months for the governor to allow restaurants to reopen, a new place kicked into gear, offering patrons meals that taste as if they were cooked at home by your dear mother. This is Moya’s American Kitchen, and the proud owner is 67-year-old Prasad Kaza who is originally from India.
An opportunity opened up and he was offered a job at Back Yard Burgers on Blankenbaker Road, and he’s currently part owner of that location. This opportunity fit in well with his past work experience, as he’d been part owner of an Arby’s restaurant and owner of a Dairy Queen, so he knew the restaurant industry quite well.
Kaza has quite an interesting story as his path from India to Louisville had a few twists along the way. He’s lived in the midwestern, eastern and southern parts of the country, making his home in places such as Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee and New York. He’s been in Louisville for 15 years, and it was an unfortunate turn of events that actually brought him to this state.
It was about two and a half years ago when Kaza had the idea to open his own fullservice restaurant. He was familiar with the building where Moya’s is now located, and it had been sitting empty for nearly a decade. He also knew the owner of the building, so he contacted him to express interest in purchasing the property.
“We had to redo the inside completely because the restaurant had been vacant for so long,” Kaza explains. “It’s really unique inside. It has a lot of woodwork all over, and there’s a grand staircase that splits into two different directions that leads to the upper floor. We had to re-sand every part of the wood and put on a fresh coat of varnish. The light fixtures have been changed. The kitchen had to be redone, and we had to replace the carpets and tile, and work on the bathrooms.”

They also had to repave the parking lot and refurbish the outdoor wooden deck. “We get a lot of compliments about the look of the restaurant from our guests,” Cunningham says.
According to Cunningham, the two-story structure has an inside occupancy limit of 250, with room for 200 on the bottom floor and 50 on top.

“The upper story is shaped like a big square, kind of like an open loft, with a hole in the middle where you can look down on the bar below,” he says.
Although Kaza is from India, he wanted to open a restaurant that appeals to the American palate.
The restaurant also has plenty of seating outdoors, and when weather permits, guests can sit on the front porch, in the parking lot,
this area I didn’t see many places like that. I wanted this to be a simple place with quality food at a reasonable price. That was my baseline before I did this. We did a lot of research. Sysco Foods helped us and we hired a professional chef to finalize our menu.”
The menu is plentiful with lots of locally inspired dishes to choose from. ELI LILLY RELEASES COVID-19 ANTIBODY TREATMENT

After a year that feels like it’s been full of upsets and letdowns, news that Eli Lilly and Company has produced a COVID-19 antibody treatment, for which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted emergency authorization, is a reason to celebrate. The treatment stems from one of the first coronavirus survivors from the Pacific Northwest.
“When your body has a virus that enters it, your immune system recognizes it and creates antibodies that help your body to rid itself of the virus,” says Janelle Sabo, Eli Lilly’s COVID-19 therapeutics platform leader. “We were able to isolate one of those antibodies and scale it up.” When introduced to the human body, this antibody binds to the COVID-19 virus and helps neutralize it, so that it clears from the body. Once Eli Lilly was granted 24 / MARCH 2021
approval by the FDA, the U.S. government bought a supply that was shipped to Eli Lilly’s wholesaler. Every week, the U.S. government and state health departments across the country decide where the therapy should be shipped. Currently the therapy, called bamlanivimab, is at various locations across the U.S. “We know bamlanivimab is in several hospitals in Indiana, and patients have already been dosed with it,” Sabo says.
What this treatment means for high-risk patients is significant. High-risk patients include those who are older, overweight, or have conditions that predispose them to suffer acutely after contracting COVID-19. The antibody is administered as soon as possible following a positive coronavirus test - within 10 days of developing symptoms.

“Our hope is that when this therapy is administered early on, those patients will avoid hospitalization and hopefully will be able to ease their symptomology sooner as well,” Sabo says.
Sabo says the virus has caused a strain on many hospital systems.

If they are positive and have symptoms, they may be a candidate for this drug if they are 55 or over, have a body mass index over 35, or have conditions like cardiovascular disease or an impaired immune system. It’s important to note that once patients are ill enough to be hospitalized,

Ergonomic chairs often have backrests that can be raised and lowered, as well as moved forward and backward to eliminate bending or stretching. Firm lumbar support may be an issue if you are sitting for long stretches. If you are sitting for long hours in a chair, it’s worth it to make the added investment in quality seating. Storage solutions are another common issue. If space is at a premium, you may need a desk with its own storage. Most of us are familiar with the experience of choking under pressure - that is, giving a subpar performance in a one-shot-only scenario such as an important competition, examination or job interview. Choking on a big stage is a dreadful experience that every athlete or performer hopes to avoid. Of course, understanding why choking occurs is a critical first step toward prevention.

Despite more than three decades of empirical research, both in the lab and on the field, social and psychological scientists have yet to produce a consensus theory of choking.

Advocates of the skill-focus model have adopted Roy Baumeister’s original idea that choking occurs when performance anxiety causes athletes to become self-conscious and pay too much attention to the conscious processing of skill execution. Such explicit monitoring or reinvestment of attention is thought to have a negative effect on well-learned skills that are typically processed outside of conscious awareness in the form of implicit, procedural memory (i.e. on autopilot). Put simply, the skill-focus model suggests that choking amounts to overthinking something that by now should be second-nature. Cognitive scientist Sian Beilock and her colleagues have referred to this phenomenon as “paralysis by analysis.” The remedy, then, is to get out of your head and let your unconscious memory take over.
Alternatively, proponents of the distraction model propose that choking occurs because heightened arousal causes athletes and performers to shift their attention away from task execution rather than toward it. Attending to external, task-irrelevant information (crowd, trophy, prize money) is thought to overwhelm the athlete’s limited working memory capacity, resulting in less efficient processing of taskrelevant cues and a higher frequency of performance errors. Put simply, the distraction model suggests that choking amounts to a breakdown in concentration. The remedy then, in stark contrast to what the skill-focus model would suggest, is to bear down and focus on the task at hand.

Thus, for Mesagno and colleagues, self-presentation concerns and fear of negative evaluation are the “why” of choking, while skill-focus and distraction are the “how.” Making this distinction between the “how” and the “why” holds promise in serving as a basis for the development of interventions aimed at addressing both the ultimate and proximal causes of choking.

Cheryl Susemichel loves to breathe life, color and vibrancy into whatever she can, whether it’s a garden or old furniture. Her shop, Secret Garden, offers a host of items such as home decor, thoughtful gifts, high-quality garden tools, and other garden items. Some may not know that Susemichel is a trained Fusion Mineral Paint retailer and hosts classes on repurposing old furniture by using a fresh coat of Fusion Mineral Paint. This class is the most popular class she offers, and it’s called “Bring Your Own Piece.” The concept is simple - attendees choose a piece from home they can bring. Students have to be able to carry the piece into the shop all by themselves without a dolly. There is only so much room and time, and Susemichel wants to be sure she can be thorough. They also have to purchase their paint from her.
“People are able to bring in a piece of furniture a family member gave them that’s old and outdated, or even ugly,” Susemichel says. “They don’t like it and they hide it in a basement or spare room. They are able to bring it to Secret Garden and transform it into something they love, and can now enjoy it with their main decor in their home.”

She’s convinced the process of taking something ugly and making it beautiful is good for the soul.
