MAYOR JEFFERSONTOWN 2022
It’s all about priorities!! People ask “Why do you want to be Mayor of Jeffersontown?” We all want the same thing! To keep Jtown a safe place to raise our families & grow old. We love our community. It’s our home! I want to maintain our strong independent police & public works departments, so we can continue providing the important services of public safety, garbage collection, snow removal & road maintenance. These are my top priorities.
1/2 PAGE AD
Maintaining a strong working relationship with our business community is also important. 80% of our budget comes from them. We need to keep Jeffersontown the place they want to locate their business. In doing so we must prepare for the future. Quality of life amenities like our Senior Citizens Center, baseball & football ball fields, parks & the museum are also things that make Jeffersontown a special place to live. We are a community of people not just a spot on a map. Juggling all these is going require someone who understands how to prioritize spending & a balanced budget during these challenging times we are now living in. I have been doing exactly that for the past 30 years in my restaurant and for 14 years as your city councilman. I am the person who will get the job done!! I respectfully ask for your support as Mayor in the primary election May 17th. Thank you & God Bless America!

F O R J E F F E R S O N T O W N M AYO R Having honorably served as your City Councilman for 12 years, I have the discipline, dedication, & determination to guide our City into the future. I also have extensive experience as an entrepreneur having successfully grown startup companies as an owner and continue to hold those positions. Professionally I've served as President of three separate Local & State Trade Associations then several years as President of Plainview Residents' Association as well as many non-profit Boards of Directors. As the City's Finance Chairman for 10 years, I have worked closely with the Mayor to develop sound fiscal policies enabling us to eliminate $17 million of long term debt without ever raising taxes. As a member of the City's Economic Development Committee, we enacted business friendly incentives which attracted new businesses while also retaining & growing existing businesses. Our future economic success depends on our 1,850 businesses & their 38,000 employees all of whom will demand & deserve an innovative Mayor with a vision for growth. Since being elected in 2010, I've been a consistent vocal advocate for the safety of our citizens. Public Safety is the foundation of government as well as the primary issue across our community and is my highest priority. I continue to be supportive of our police department and am particularly proud to have voted to implement two forward thinking initiatives; our Angel Program for substance dependent individuals & their families and our new Victim's Advocate Liaison. To further improve future policing for J-town, the next infrastructure project will be our "State of the Art" Police Department Facility which is scheduled for completion in 2023.

As a member of the City Council I have always voted to protect our infrastructure and provide extended amenities such as our improved Veteran's Memorial Park, Senior Citizens Center, Jeffersonian Community Center, Library, Museum, Arts Program, Plainview Swim & Tennis facilities, Skyview baseball, softball, & football complex, and Bluebird Gymnasiums. All of these, individually & collectively, are critical for a vibrant City and its residents to flourish. Our current project is an innovative Amphitheater scheduled for completion later this year & will grow our "Arts Program for All" in a quantum leap. These newest facilities along with our new Public Works Building (2020) are the very type of capital investments in our community necessary to secure J-town for the next 50 years and I am committed to bringing them to fruition for each of you. As residents, you deserve a leader who is for you. A leader with insight so you can continue pursuing happiness at your own leisure and these measures will clearly enable that pursuit in Jeffersontown. The next Mayor has a duty to your future. I ask for your vote on May 17th for Jeffersontown Mayor as we step into the future together because, "Leadership Matters".

The start of the new year often means taking a closer look at improving our health. If this examination involves your struggle with allergies, I’d like to tell you about what is widely considered the most effective treatment for respiratory allergies - allergy shots, also known as allergen immunotherapy. Throughout the past 40 years, there has been a large amount of evidence confirming the efficacy of allergy shots in children and adults. Shots are prescribed for allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, allergic asthma and stinging insect hypersensitivity. They have been shown to significantly reduce symptoms and need for medications. They have also been shown to help prevent the development of asthma, as well as decrease the likelihood of developing new allergies.
GET READY FOR SPRING ALLERGIES
WHAT IS THE PROCESS IF I NEED TO GO ON SHOTS? 1. A skin test or blood test is used to identify relevant sensitivities and correlate them with the presenting symptoms. 2. A prescription is written for the contents of a patient’s vial based on the skin test results. Science is constantly adding to understanding of how much of each allergen needs to be included in a maintenance allergy shot, as well as what allergens can be mixed together in the vials. 3. A maintenance vial (usually designated as red in color) is mixed and then diluted (10-fold three to four times for most patients) to minimize the risk of an allergic reaction. 4. It is now important to “build up” to the effective dose, working through the buildup concentrations; progressing through green (1:1000), blue (1:100), yellow (1:10) and red (1:1) vials. This can take several weeks to months depending on the frequency of shots. Most patients will see significant TownePost.com / APRIL 2022 / 9
improvement as they advance through their yellow and red vials. 5. After building up, the frequency of shots is spread out. For example, every two weeks for six to 12 months, then every three weeks for six to 12 months, then once monthly until a complete three- to five-year duration is completed. The take-home message is that shots are needed only every two to four weeks after the initial build-up stage. 6. If three to five years of maintenance allergy shots are completed, patients can have a prolonged, if not lifelong, benefit. A common mistake is to stop allergy shots in the first one to two years, especially if one’s symptoms are resolved. However, it is very important to complete the full duration. Shots are an investment that can pay longterm dividends. Talk with your allergist about the risks and benefits. Don’t wait until you are miserable and finally decide to get shots. Shots need a head start on the season. Resolve to get that head start this year! To find relief for your allergy symptoms, call Dr. Damin at Allergy Partners of Louisville at 502-882-2063.

After his undergrad work was complete, Bernhardt took a year off and began writing for a local newspaper in his hometown. “The joke is, I went into conducting because the baseball fell through,” he chuckles. Bernhardt’s next adventure took him west to the University of Southern California (USC), where he received his master’s degree in instrumental conducting, graduating with honors. After graduation he began seeking a position as a conductor. He landed a job with the University of Alabama as the conductor for their orchestra and opera, and as the director of conducting studies. Bernhardt’s early days were quite busy. While with Alabama he made his conducting debut at Carnegie Hall thanks to his association with P.D.Q. Bach, a fictional composer invented by the American musical satirist Peter Schickele. “I felt like I was in way over my head, but felt deliriously lucky,” he explains. “I was extremely nervous but it was an extraordinary life experience.” He was just 27 at the time.
He also made his conducting debut with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and his professional opera debut with the Birmingham Civic Opera, all while at his post with the university. It was during this time period, in the early 1980s, when a series of events began churning that would affect Bernhardt. Unbeknownst to him, conversations were taking place in Texas that would ultimately result in his journey to Louisville. “The Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra was on a tour of the United States with a gentleman named Helmuth Rilling, who is a Bach specialist,” he says. “They were in Austin, Texas, and after the concert the members of the L.A. Chamber were invited to dinner by the conductor of the Austin Symphony, Akira Endo. Endo was a Los Angeles guy. After dinner, Endo says, ‘I just got a gig with the Louisville Orchestra and I’m going to become their music director. Do any of you know a young conductor who needs a break?’”

It was a fortuitous coincidence that several of Bernhardt’s friends from USC were in the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and they mentioned Bernhardt’s name. “That’s how I got the audition,” he says. Bernhardt was invited to Louisville in the spring of 1981. He drove to town and stayed at the Galt House. He was one of four conductors who auditioned. They were each given 25 minutes to work with the orchestra. After the audition, the orchestra and Endo cast their votes, and Bernhardt was selected. He became the assistant conductor for the Louisville Orchestra in September of 1981. Endo left the Louisville Orchestra in 1983, and during the search for a new music director, Bernhardt took on the role of acting music director. This also led to his conducting the pops series, subscription concerts and educational concerts.

In 1985 Bernhardt began guest conducting for other music organizations. At one point he was working concurrently with the Louisville Orchestra, the Amarillo Symphony Orchestra and the Tucson Symphony. After signing on with Tucson, he was invited to become the artistic director and principal conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic. “In 1991 I was asked to become the principal conductor of the Kentucky Opera,” he says. “By this time the Louisville Orchestra had replaced me in pops with Skitch Henderson. I was a guest conductor every year with the orchestra and I became the principal guest of the opera. In 1997 I became the principal pops conductor of the Louisville Orchestra.”

Blackacre Conservancy NATURE PRESERVE AND HISTORIC HOMESTEAD HAS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
Writer / Gavin LaPaille Photography Provided
As executive director at Blackacre Conservancy, Dennis Craig wears many hats. Some nights you may find him out in the field unloading hay. On other nights he could be doing crowd monitoring at one of the many events Blackacre hosts. Perhaps Craig could be seen at your local hardware store, buying supplies for the latest project Kentucky’s first nature preserve is undertaking. With nearly 300 acres of land, farm animals and a homestead dating back over 200 years, there is always something that needs to be done at Blackacre.
Located off Blankenbaker Parkway near Jeffersontown, it’s open to visitors from sunrise to sunset seven days per week. Hiking, sightseeing, field trips, educational workshops and gardening are some of the activities the community can enjoy. Craig hopes to find new ways to get the community involved. “We say we have something for everyone,” Craig says. “It’s a stress-free environment.” A staff of about six people, mostly part time, keeps the historic homestead running dayto-day, but it’s those who donate their time 14 / APRIL 2022 / TownePost.com
and money who make Blackacre an ideal destination in Louisville. From all ages and backgrounds, Craig estimates volunteers are spending hundreds of hours each month to keep Blackacre operating. Volunteers fill roles such as cleaning the historic structures, performing maintenance, providing care for the farm animals, leading classes, assisting with summer camp or sharing Blackacre history with visitors. Blackacre recently added a volunteer coordinator to connect people with the various service opportunities.
“Volunteers are the heart of what keeps Blackacre going,” says Susan Speece, Blackacre’s programs and events director. “Having volunteers who donate their services goes a long way. Businesses have offered their services for special projects, including electricians, heating and air, and technology companies.” Craig doesn’t assign volunteers to random jobs, however. He wants everyone to feel part of Blackacre, while utilizing their skills
and giving them opportunities to do what they enjoy.
Craig also wants Blackacre to give back to the community by providing a safe and fun atmosphere for people to visit. Blackacre “One of the things we try to do when we has opened the property for more events meet people is to learn more about them,” including the Sunday Sunset Music Series, Craig says. “When they volunteer here, I a summertime concert experience featuring want them to do something they want to different styles of music. “Volunteers go a long way into making sure these events are successful,” Craig says. “The more people we have for the events, the easier it is on everyone. It’s not like working concessions at big events that are crazy and hectic. Here it is so much more fun because you’re interacting with people and enjoying the atmosphere. Blackacre is a hidden treasure in Louisville. When people discover us, they immediately fall in love with the farm animals, the homestead’s history and beautiful trails.” Blackacre Nature Preserve contains one of the county’s most complete 18thcentury farm complexes - the Moses Tyler Homestead. It includes a stone cottage, a two-story limestone springhouse, and a double-crib, Appalachian-style log barn, all built from the land’s natural resources. The 230-year-old barn has stood the test of time, and children love to explore the structure. The homestead is like an outdoor museum where people can walk through history.
Visitors can experience a working farm and feed the goats, horses, sheep and cattle along the fence line. The 1844 Presley Tyler farmhouse is open on select dates throughout the year. Docents dressed in period attire talk about the homestead’s beginnings, including its ties to the Revolutionary War and whiskey distillery operation. Several repairs have been made to the historic structures and education center, improving the property and making it more appealing to visitors. “We want Blackacre to look neat and presentable,” Craig says. “We don’t want things looking in a state of disrepair. People recognize that.” Blackacre offers several trails, great for those looking to get outdoors. Numerous trails wind through fields and forests, and by streams and ponds. Blackacre provides a

Effective Spring Cleaning Tips Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
It’s that time of year again when everyone around you is cleaning, sorting, organizing and decluttering, right? Yes, spring cleaning is a thing, and we love it because it gives us an opportunity to freshen up our home and get a head start on the coming hectic seasons we tend to have in the spring and summer. We’ve got a few tips to help you survive and dominate cleaning this spring.
Find an Ultimate Checklist This may sound kind of funny, but lists are very helpful. You can find many different options for this on Pinterest, but find one you like. The nice thing about having an ultimate checklist is that it will get you on the right track and keep you from forgetting about areas like baseboards, vents or those pesky blinds.
Create a Schedule
Just like you might plan out meals each week, try setting up a cleaning schedule. Not only will this help you stay on top of everything much easier, but it also spreads out the work so that you aren’t letting your cleaning take over an entire day. Try doing some tasks every other day of the week, like floors on Mondays, windows on Wednesdays, bathrooms on Thursdays and laundry on Sundays. Spreading out the tasks will help you feel accomplished without feeling overwhelmed.
Have the Right Tools
Nothing is more frustrating than starting a job and not having all the things you need. Make sure you’ve got your mop heads, squeegees, microfiber cloths and cleaning

solutions (for carpets, bathrooms, kitchens, floors and windows). Here’s a quick top-10 cleaning supplies list for every home - a good sponge, towels, microfiber cloths, a squeegee, a bucket, a spray bottle, a scrub brush, an old toothbrush, a good broom (with a dustpan) and a good vacuum. With these you’ll be on the right path to clean surroundings for sure.
Clean by Room
Sometimes cleaning room by room is the most effective way to deep clean. Grab that ultimate checklist from above to help you see what you need to do in each room, and remind you where you might need to spend extra time in each space. Make sure you focus on areas you may have neglected through the winter months. While in each room, take a few extra minutes to organize the spaces. Sort items into

Next, sparingly spray the water over the dry ingredients and start mixing with your hands. You don’t want to add too much water, so go slowly. Remember, you can’t take it back once you drop it in. You’ll know the mix is ready when it starts to clump, which means it’s time to fill the molds. Next, you’ll make balls and push them into the mold. Don’t fill all the way to the top, as the mixture/bombs will most likely expand and puff up when they start to dry out. Give them one to two hours to dry and your garbage disposal bombs will be ready for use, and your garbage disposal is going to smell fresh and clean!

THE COURTYARDS AT CURRY FARMS “The whole community’s premise is based on privacy, so we try to keep the neighbors from having a direct view into each other’s courtyard areas,” Heareth says. Homeowners can utilize the courtyard spaces however they like - for example, with a water feature, a fire pit or a garden. “Some people plant flowers or little tomato plants,” Heareth says. Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
The Courtyards at Curry Farms is an Epcon community whose tagline is, “Life is meant to be lived on your terms.” It’s an attractive notion for folks of all demographics, including empty nesters and those in search of an easier lifestyle with fewer home-care responsibilities. "We help so many people who've raised their families get to enjoy hobbies and traveling," says Michelle Heareth, sales and design manager. "Because of their work schedules or their personal lives, they like having someone to mow and mulch for them. They also love living in a community that offers so much for them to do; from walking, swimming, pickleball and a work out room." Though Epcon communities exist all across the country, this is the first of its kind in the Louisville area. The Courtyards at Curry Farms offers seven different floor plans, which buyers can personalize. Should a buyer choose to build a basement, they can purchase a walkout lot with a private back view.
The community, which will ultimately include 176 homes, features a clubhouse with gathering space, full kitchen, exercise room and dining area (which can be used for business meetings). There is also a heated pool and two pickleball courts. The average price of a home is roughly $460,000, though some smaller floor plans start in the $320,000 range. “Realistically, no one ever buys a base house because they add features to make it their own,” Heareth says. “People can live here for as little as $375,000 or as much as $600,000, depending on the floor plan, the features, and whether they do a walk-out or add a second floor. We can be as affordable as someone needs to be, based on the space that they choose.” According to Heareth, the floor plans provide the best use of space in the kitchen, living room and master bedroom. “All the other rooms are ancillary, really,” she says. “Though if you need a floor plan with a home office, we have some that can accommodate that as well.” TownePost.com / APRIL 2022 / 25

Heareth suspects that throughout COVID-19, many folks have grown weary of caring for their homes, and have begun to crave something smaller and more convenient. “A move to a place like this makes life more manageable,” she says. “What I really love about this community, first and foremost, is that it feels like you’re on vacation at a resort but you’re at home.”

LOUISVILLE MUSIC ARTIST RELEASES DEBUT SINGLE Writer / Jessica Able Photography Provided
An aspiring singer-songwriter works with music heroes to release a new hit single. It sounds like the start of a dream. For Andi Zyland, it has been. Zyland released “New Static,” an infectious modern pop dance track, late last year. The new project is a departure from Zyland’s previous sound, and she even changed her name. Formerly billed as Andi Ramser, part of Mad Luck, an upbeat pop rock band with Sean Ewing, she retooled herself as a solo singer - Andi Zyland.
In the fall of 2019, when Zyland, a native of Georgetown, Indiana, saw an online contest offering a free production package with the Moxy Brothers, a music production company started by Adrian Young of No Doubt and Todd Forman, formerly of Sublime, she jumped at the chance to work with the two music industry megastars.
She spent a week in Long Beach, California, last summer working with Young and Forman at Young’s home studio known as the Ruby Red Room. Zyland describes it as “a dream come true” and says No Doubt was a huge influence that inspired her to become a singer in the first place. Adrian Young is the drummer for the rock band, with lead vocals by Gwen Stefani.
When she didn’t win, Zyland says she was disappointed at first, but the production duo of Young and Forman heard potential in her unique vocal style. Zyland has been a singer and songwriter for about 15 years. In that time she’s been in “The contest allowed me to make that several bands and acoustic acts. Her original connection,” she explains. “When the world band, Mad Luck, was playing shows and started opening back up, I reached out gearing up for a second album release until again. The timing was just right.” COVID-19 hit and stopped everyone in their tracks in early 2020. 26 / APRIL 2022 / TownePost.com
Then, when her writing partner got an opportunity to join a touring band, Zyland says she knew she needed to find a way to continue her passion for creating music. She took the time to focus on her plan and figure out her next steps. “I had to make my own path and decide what direction to go,” she says. “I wanted to venture outside of my comfort zone. I’m so influenced by the ‘80s and ‘90s.” She adds that she didn’t want to leave her roots completely, but rather experiment with a different sound. “When you’re an independent artist and you’re not expected to make a certain type of music, it gives you freedom to experiment,” she says. “When I think about what I love - Beck, Blondie, No Doubt, Garbage, The Police - I pull from so many different influences. Then add the creativity and experience Adrian and Todd brought to the table, and the song took on a personality of its own.” “New Static” reflects on her time of change and looking inward. Zyland says she really leaned into the uncomfortable and allowed herself to be vulnerable.

Zyland did what she always does when she writes - she pulled inspiration from personal experience. “I lied down on my living room floor with a pen and my journals and told myself, ‘You are going to do this,’” she says. That determination is what fueled her through the doubt she felt. She says she wove her hesitation and willingness to fight through it in the lyrics. “It’s about feeling like an imposter, but the opportunity knocks so I took it,” she says. “Then fighting through all the discomfort, pain and all the self-doubt because it was something I wanted so badly. I could feel it in my veins. I knew I had to give it my all to see where it would go.”
After collaborating virtually with Young and Forman throughout the summer, she spent a week in August in Long Beach with the Moxy Brothers team tracking and mixing the instruments and vocals.

The opening lines of the song echo that sense of determination:
Zyland sang the lead vocals, Young played drums and guitar, and Forman played keyboard, synth bass, and horns. Young’s son Mason also played guitar on the song. These days Zyland is listening to a mixture of rock, pop, alternative and favorites from the 1980s, including St. Vincent, Half Noise, Gorillaz, Metric, Talking Heads and David Bowie. HEART FOR HELPING APRIL IS NATIONAL VOLUNTEER MONTH
Writer / Julie Engelhardt Photography Provided
Did you know that April is National Volunteer Month? This is the time when all can give a hearty thanks to those who spend countless hours in their communities to help a variety of organizations. Volunteers are often referred to as the “heart” or “backbone” of these organizations - which is so very true. Without volunteers donating their time, their passion and often their money, many worthwhile programs, a majority which are nonprofit, might cease to exist. Here is the story behind National Volunteer Month. Canada began celebrating National Volunteer Week in 1943 to recognize women working on the home front during World War II. Celebrations dropped after the war but eventually picked back up again in the late 1960s and early 1970s. National Volunteer Week became prevalent in the United States in 1974, eventually expanding to National Volunteer Month. President Richard Nixon urged Americans to observe the week by finding volunteer opportunities. He called upon people to “recognize volunteers by observing the
week with special ceremonies to honor those who have given countless hours for the betterment of our communities and the American way of life.” In 2003 President George W. Bush formed the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation, to recognize the worthwhile contributions people of all ages were making through service. The council went on to create a volunteer opportunity database at volunteer.org, and established a program to recognize Americans with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. What exactly are the duties of a volunteer? You’ll find them assisting at animal shelters such as the Kentucky Humane Society, where they feed and comfort stray animals. They dig into the dirt to plant bulbs, trees, shrubs and flowers at the Waterfront Botanical Gardens. They deliver nutritious food to homebound senior citizens through Meals on Wheels. They donate their time to the American Red Cross by being blood donor ambassadors or working on the Disaster Action Team (DAT), where they meet disaster-caused needs of individuals or households. If you’ve never volunteered but have always wanted to, yet feel intimidated by working 30 / APRIL 2022 / TownePost.com
with a larger organization, there are always ways to help out on a smaller scale. Just look for places in your own neighborhood. One place to find volunteer opportunities is at your child’s school. That is how Veronica Berkenbosch began her volunteer career. She stepped up to help when her son joined the marching band at Eastern High School (EHS) in Middletown. “During the summer band camp I helped with meal preparation and serving food, as well as working water duty and with first aid,” she says. “I’ve also worked at the concession stand and I did stadium cleanup.” Berkenbosch also served as the communications secretary with the band’s board of directors. She worked with the band’s uniform department, plus she helped with show props, fundraising, and chaperoning students to competitions. She was also the volunteer coordinator for the band’s Eagle Classic band competition held each fall. Volunteering with the band became a family affair, as her husband John also lent a helping hand. “He volunteered in first aid at the Eagle
Classic and during the band’s road trips,” she says. “He also ran the Christmas tree lots for several years, which is one of the band’s biggest fundraisers.”
“I spent 11 years as a Girl Scout and 42 years as an adult volunteer,” Morris explains. “My mother was my troop leader in the beginning. I had so much fun, I never left.”
The couple’s youngest child graduated in 2017 so their duties with the band tapered off, but she still helps in various capacities.
Morris leads three girl groups - a Brownie troop, a Junior troop, and a troop for middle and high school girls. Their meetings take place at Woodland Church in Middletown. Part of her program involves offering a variety of experiences through meetings and field trips.
“I’ve loved my time as a volunteer with the EHS bands,” she says. “I loved getting to know the kids, and being present for our children as well as their friends. Getting involved in activities that our children participate in is significant as well. It shows our kids that we care about what they are passionate about. I think volunteering is very important because it connects us with the community.” Scouting programs can also use volunteers - especially volunteers like Kerry Morris. She’s been associated with the Girl Scouts program for an amazing 53 years.
“To run an effective troop, you have to love the girls and what you are doing, be very organized and have good parental support,” she explains. “I want my girls to know that they are important and that I am here to help them reach their full potential. By volunteering, I have made a lot of friends, had new experiences and had the privilege of impacting our future.” Local churches are also good places to discover volunteer opportunities.

reduce its symptoms. The call for nominations for the Bell Awards will begin in May with a deadline of June 30. People can visit the Bell Awards page at wlky.com for the online link starting at the end of April. If you’re seeking a way to become involved with volunteer opportunities in our area, there are a number of places that can use your help. Kim Bagwell volunteers her time at Westport Road Baptist Church with their Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) program. Her career with MOPS really began 21 years ago when she and her family lived in Brunswick, Georgia, and she was the mother of young children.
of life as an expectant mother to a mother of a child about to start school, is an incredible thing. Being able to pay that forward as a mentor is just as special if not more so. I feel blessed to have been introduced to MOPS all those years ago. It’s been one of the absolute best things I’ve ever been a part of.”
“I first attended MOPS as a parent participant in 2001, and the following year I signed up to be the care team coordinator,” Bagwell states. “My job was to get volunteers within our group to do such things as take meals, diapers, and anything else to moms and their families.”
On a larger scale, Louisville Metro leaders do their part to give thanks to volunteers in our different communities.
She held other positions along the way such as discussion group leader and table leader. In 2019 Bagwell began volunteering with the local MOPS program as a child-care worker with the 2-year-olds group. “When COVID hit, I moved into a mentoring position,” she explains. “We are there to participate in the meeting like the moms do, but we are also there just to talk with new moms, to show them hospitality, give encouragement, advice and emotional support. For the 2021-2022 year I still serve as a mentor for the mothers, plus I recently stepped into the role of coordinating childcare volunteers with my fellow mentors.” Bagwell says MOPS holds a special place her heart. “It obviously had a big effect on me from day one, otherwise I wouldn’t have wanted to be in the roles I had or the ones I have now,” she says. “To be able to lock arms with other mothers, then and now, to get through, enjoy and understand the season
The WLKY Spirit of Louisville Foundation holds the annual Bell Awards, which recognizes individuals who have demonstrated the true spirit of Louisville through selfless volunteer efforts. They recognize 10 adult recipients, plus two individuals who receive the WLKY Bell Awards Youth Service Honor. In conjunction with Mayor Greg Fischer, the foundation presents the Mayor’s Spirit of Louisville Award, and along with Churchill Downs the foundation presents the John Asher Spirit Award. The 2021 Bell Award honorees included George Addison, a lifelong advocate of educational, youth, social justice and civic issues; Elmer Lucille Allen, a founder of West Louisville Women’s Collaborative (WLWC) as well as a volunteer with Western Library, Frazier History Museum, Louisville Central Community Center, Fund for the Arts, and Commission on Public Art; and Doug Pifer, founder of TKO Parkinson’s, a nonprofit, free exercise program for those living with Parkinson’s disease. After his own diagnosis, he became involved with Rock Steady Boxing (RSB), which has been proven to slow down the progression of Parkinson’s Disease and 32 / APRIL 2022 / TownePost.com
In St. Matthews there are organizations such as St. Matthews Area Ministries (stmam. com), Blessings in a Backpack (louisville. blessingsinabackpack.org) and the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org). In Middletown, volunteer opportunities include the Middletown chapter of Lions Club International (middletownlions. net) and Water With Blessings (waterwithblessings.org). In Jeffersontown, you’ll find ways to help through Jeffersontown Area Ministries (louisvilleministries.org/projects-archive/ jeffersontown-area-ministries). If you’d like to do an overall search for volunteer opportunities, sites such as Volunteer Match are a good place to start. Go to volunteermatch.org to find opportunities with organizations that work with children, animals, seniors and more. Finally, gotolouisville.com is another great avenue for locating local volunteer work. Volunteers help with area festivals, at the Visitor Center, and with greeting conventioneers visiting our city. If you know someone who is a volunteer or meet someone who spends their time volunteering, this is the month to show them your appreciation.

COMING TOGETHER
COVID, COMMUNITY AND THE JEFFERSONTOWN CHAMBER Writer / Deana Karem, President, Jeffersontown Chamber of Commerce Photography Provided
In March of 2020 the Jeffersontown Chamber of Commerce reached 1,000 members. There was a lot of excitement about achieving this milestone and great anticipation for what would come next. The City of Jeffersontown remained booming, and reaping the benefits of a number of new business attraction projects creating jobs and filling up buildings. The chamber staff and board of directors were excited as they hosted the annual dinner and celebrated another amazing Gaslight Festival. The year was still new and filled with fresh ideas, new expectations and renewed excitement about what would come next. Off in the distance there was a buzz in the news about a global pandemic coming to the states. There were news stories about mask wearing, a pause on global travel and predictions of economic change. Many of us thought, “It’ll just take a few weeks to get past this, and Kentucky will be spared because global pandemics don’t happen in Louisville, Kentucky.”
Well, as a chamber of commerce, what do you think we did? We’re all about gathering and we’re all about networking. We thought, “What do we do now? How do we serve? How do we support our business leaders and provide calm and compassion for each other, even when we are worried about our own destiny?” Never before have chambers had to think differently and rally around community and business needs. Chambers across the country were reimagining ways to serve their members and add value. Some were accessing personal protective equipment in bulk so they could get it out to companies for use by their employees and customers. Some were developing loan programs to help businesses stay afloat. Chambers were utilizing virtual technology for networking opportunities, while others were developing workforce strategies to help fill frontline jobs with people who were being laid off from other industry positions. Some chambers were doing all of this at once. At times it seemed like organized chaos. The Jeffersontown Chamber is proud of the role we played to support businesses. By July of 2020 we were past the shock of the initial crisis, and delivering new opportunities for businesses to connect. We created a COVID resource guide to help companies access loan funds, business counseling and emotional support.
Then, there it was. For the safety of our families, friends, co-workers, students and customers, we had to shelter in place. Wear masks. Coach our kids on algebra. Wipe down groceries. No more community We hosted weekly Chamber Chats to offer gatherings and no more business networking. connection to one another. We started a
COVID series focused on how to manage employees through a pandemic and how to reach customers when you can’t have them on-site. We re-initiated our job board, and upgraded our technology so our own staff could be more resourceful in serving businesses. We held as many traditional events as we could through online platforms. We even created virtual events for the 2020 Gaslight Festival just so we could keep some sense of tradition given the conditions we were experiencing. Today it feels like we might be coming out of this pandemic, and our Jeffersontown Chamber is better for it. As hard as it has been, it gave us a chance to clean closets and file cabinets so we get to start anew. We learned our chamber is more than cocktails and coffee meetings. We are resourceful problem solvers and creative leaders. We are tech-savvy pioneers in managing groups of people via Zoom. We are experienced professionals who care about our community, and will go to extreme lengths to find ways to support our companies. This relentless virus taught us to be ready for anything. My predecessor did an amazing job preparing for a crisis. We didn’t have to let any of our staff go, and in fact have been able to keep all of our positions and even grow by one. Now, in 2022, the Jeffersontown Chamber has launched a new brand with a bold, fresh look. It reflects our new self-worth and our fearlessness in serving others. We continue

And community means more now than ever. This year we are focused on celebrating the businesses of the Jeffersontown Chamber As of spring 2022, we are a better, wiser, of Commerce. We encourage residents to stronger, more creative, more resourceful
