FAITH AND FOUNDATIONS JEFFERSONTOWN HAS A RICH LOCAL CHURCH HISTORY building churches was not high on the list of priorities. Still, religious beliefs and practices were of extreme importance to the early settlers of Jeffersontown, and formed the foundation for how they conducted themselves on a daily basis. Church was important to them, even if there were no designated buildings in which to worship. Consequently, the earliest congregations met in the homes of various members, where itinerant preachers and circuit riders (pastors for the Methodist church who served a given area) would conduct services.

Settling a new land in the late 1700s had to have been a daunting task for those few who were willing and brave enough to make the trek into unknown territories. Many of the pioneers of Jeffersontown left behind families and ways of life that were far more comfortable and secure than what was facing them on their trek westward, into an unknown land still suffering from Indian attacks. The early settlers of Jeffersontown brought with them not only a great deal of courage and strength of will, but also the reassurance of their unfailing religious beliefs. At a time when constructing one’s own house was an enormous task, especially coupled with the daily chores of farm life,

The earliest churches in the area were Chenoweth Run Baptist, founded in 1792 and deeded land for a building in late 1799, as well as the German Lutherans and German Reformed Presbyterians, who held services beginning about 1795 in the barn of Jacob Hoke, near the current viaduct on Taylorsville Road. The earliest church on the town square was a small log structure built at the corner of Watterson Trail and Shelby Street, where the German Reformed Presbyterian Church Cemetery is now located. The 1799 deed for this lot, sold to the German Reformed Presbyterians, marks their separation from the German Lutherans. Since money was scarce for the newly formed congregations scattered throughout

the area, four of them decided to build a communal structure that could be shared by all, with each church appointed one Sunday per month for services. Although Philip and Peggy Zilhart did not transfer ownership of lot 35 to the trustees of the churches until 1819, the Union Church occupied the site by 1816, and was known as the “Brunerstown Congregation,” after Abraham Bruner, who purchased the land and sold lots on what became the town square. Members of the Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist churches banded together and molded bricks for the church on the premises, which was common practice at the time, but since the bricks were not fired properly, the building proved to be worthless and had to be reconstructed with stone in 1820. The Presbyterians were entitled to use the church on the first Thursday through the following six days every month, the Lutherans the second, Methodists third and Baptists fourth. When the building was not occupied, it was free for any religious societies to use. As congregations expanded and grew wealthier, they were able to purchase land and erect their own churches in other locations. The first congregation to leave the Union Church was the Lutherans, who were deeded lots 28, 29 and 30, next to the original lots purchased by the German Presbyterians. On September 29, 1833, they dedicated the cornerstone for their very own brick building, which was used until 1895. It was then torn down and a new frame building was constructed upon the old foundations, where Thoroughbred Hall now stands on Watterson Trail. By 1854, the church was known as St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, and later as Christ Lutheran Church. On October 9, 1960, groundbreaking services were held for a new location at Taylorsville Road and Six Mile Lane.

Masonic Lodge

The Old Lutheran Church

Black residents had always been members of the regular congregations in Jeffersontown, worshipping in the loft of the Union Church while the white parishioners worshipped on the main floor. In 1833 Henry Adams, who was a minister of the biracial First Baptist Church of Louisville, formally organized the black Baptist members of the Union Church and installed Reverend Henry Summerfield, a former slave who had bought his freedom in order to preach the gospel, as the first pastor of the reorganized black Baptist congregation. In 1848, a new facility called the “Colored” Union Church was erected a few blocks south on Old Taylorsville Road to house the black Baptists and Methodists. After all of the congregations eventually left the Union Church to set up new buildings of their own, the black Baptists wished to separate from the black Methodists and return to their former location in the old Union Church. “Jeffersontown Colored Baptist Church” bought the decrepit property in 1876 for $175, and the land was deeded over to them in 1877. Throughout the years, various new buildings replaced aging and outgrown structures as the size of the congregation increased at what would become known as First Baptist Church of Jeffersontown. The next congregation to leave the Union Church was the “Old School Presbyterian Church,” which moved to the ground floor of the Masonic Lodge constructed at 10411 Watterson Trail in 1866. In 1870, the local Presbytery wanted them to merge with adjacent churches, but the Jeffersontown

church deferred action and eventually dissolved. A new Presbyterian Church was formed in 1885, and they constructed a sanctuary at 10411 Taylorsville Road. In 1966, a larger church was constructed next to the old building, but that church closed in 2012 due to lack of membership. Although no records exist prior to 1845 for the original Baptist congregation that used the Union Church, it is known that they moved into the lower portion of the Masonic building on Watterson Trail around 1871, after the Presbyterians moved out. They remained there until 1926, when they constructed a brick building at 10011 Taylorsville Road. Fire destroyed that building in 1937, forcing the members to meet in its basement until they could build a new limestone structure on top of it in 1949. Although the congregation went by several different names after its founding, they were known as both First Baptist Church and Jeffersontown Baptist until around 1956, when, due to confusion in mail service, they officially changed their name to Jeffersontown Baptist Church, and opted to allow “First Colored Baptist Church” to thereafter be known solely as First Baptist Church of Jeffersontown. The Methodists were the last congregation to leave the Union Church when they purchased land at 10219 Taylorsville Road for a church of their own in 1860. That building, constructed of bricks made on-site in 1864, was razed in 1967 to make way for a more modern facility. In 1972, a memorial bell tower was constructed in front of the

building to house the bell cast in 1888 for the old church sanctuary. At times referred to as the Black Methodist Church, St. Paul Methodist Church was formed in 1877. Following the death of her husband in 1886, Rosa L. Leatherman sold town lots 94 and 95 to the Jeffersontown Methodist Episcopal Church, and the African-American congregation constructed the frame church that same year. Around 2004, the congregation left the building at 10525 Old Taylorsville Road, and a few years later it was saved from destruction by the Swetnam family, who renovated it into a lovely wedding chapel. Aside from St. Edward Catholic Church, which was established in 1878, the only other historic congregation housed on the town square was Jeffersontown Christian Church. The original building was constructed on lot 52 in 1839, but it burned in 1878 and a new sanctuary was constructed on the same location at 10408 Watterson Trail. The Christian Church opened its doors to house displaced people from Louisville during the 1937 flood. In 1961 that building was sold to the Moose Lodge and a new church was constructed at 10631 Taylorsville Road. Of course, many other churches have sprung up in Jeffersontown through the years, adding to the diversity of our city. It is amazing to note, however, just how important these historic churches have remained throughout time, woven into the very fabric of Jeffersontown.

that this is whatever I want to make it.” He chose the name Mow Better because of his meticulous approach. Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided

Mason Carpenter was just 10 years old when he began mowing yards in his Kentucky neighborhood. Fast-forward 17 years, and he’s still taking care of a handful of those yards, along with many others including commercial and industrial properties. “I was encouraged to go to college so I did for a short time, but ultimately decided to explore what else was out there for me,” Carpenter says. After studying basic courses he worked briefly as a firefighter and an emergency medical technician, but what he liked most about firefighting was the fact that the schedule enabled him to take care of yards on the side. In 2015 he decided to take the plunge and devote himself full-time to his mowing business when he launched Mow Better Lawnscapes. Taking that leap of faith didn’t worry him - in fact, it inspired him. “There’s no ceiling,” Carpenter says. “I like

“I got into this business because I liked making yards look pretty,” says Carpenter, who prides himself on putting a clean, crisp edge on every lawn, and also instructing his crew not to blow grass into landscapes or leave any marks in yards with equipment. Any time he picks up a new client, the first thing he does is ask what dissatisfied them about their last mowing company. “I want to know what they are looking for in a lawn care service so that we can tweak what we do to make them happy,” Carpenter says. “For instance, some people are very particular about wanting stripes in their yard to go a certain direction. Whatever they want - if they want their yard cut in a diamond cut, vertical or horizontal - we make sure to deliver.” Mow Better, which takes care of both residential and commercial properties, also provides leaf removal, shrub trimming, mulch, full lawn cleanup, dirt, sod, hardscaping, retaining walls, drainage, and MAY 2021 / 9

snow and ice management. Over time, the business has grown substantially. Initially a one-man operation, Carpenter now employs three full-time crews (two for mowing and one for landscaping). During the summer, he usually has 15 employees on staff. What started out as just mowing has turned into a full-service lawn and landscaping company for every season. For those who struggle to envision an end product, Carpenter has software on his iPad that enables him to show clients complete landscaping makeovers. “If you’re unsure about what kind of plants you want to go with, for example, I can use photos of your home or business and insert different plants, shrubs and trees, to give you a vision of exactly how the finished product would look,” says Carpenter, who is proud of how far he’s come and excited about where he’s going. “I remember as a kid seeing big companies with trucks and trailers, thinking, ‘Maybe one day I’ll be there,’ ” he adds. “Now I’ve got five of them. It’s humbling to look back. I’m proud of my team and am thankful for our loyal customers. Everything isPre-K coming Daytogether. Campers”

CARING CHARACTERS

FAN-BASED ORGANIZATION SUPPORTS NONPROFITS AND CHARITIES Writer / Julie Engelhardt Photography Provided

A long time ago, in the year 1977 to be exact, a new movie hit theaters and changed the way we think about films and filmmaking. This was the year audiences were introduced to the creativity and imagination of filmmaker George Lucas, and the first installment of his space opera, “Star Wars.” The film became a worldwide pop-culture phenomenon, and through the past four decades it’s grown into a huge franchise that has expanded into various films and other media, including books, toys, clothing, games, theme park attractions and more. The initial “Star Wars” film, as well as its sequels, prequels and other incarnations,

became so popular that 20 years after the first film’s debut, two fans from South Carolina, Albin Johnson and Tom Crews, began an international fan-based organization. It was organized for the construction and wearing of accurate replicas of the armor and clothing worn by Imperial stormtroopers, Sith lords, Clone troopers, bounty hunters and other villains from the “Star Wars” universe. They named it the 501st Legion, also known as Vader’s Fist. According to Kenzo Barlow, public relations officer for the Bluegrass Garrison, their motto is “Bad guys doing good.” The organization is made up entirely of volunteers, and there are currently 13,000 active members worldwide, on six continents and more than 60 countries. Members can be found right here in 10 / MAY 2021

Kentucky - more specifically, right here in Louisville and its surrounding cities. Their mission is to work with nonprofit and charitable organizations to raise money. No members are paid for their work. The entire Legion is broken down into manageable sections called Garrisons. The largest Garrison is in Germany, with nearly 1,000 members. In the United States, Garrisons are divided based largely on state boundaries or regional divisions. For example, Kentucky was, until recently, part of the Mid-South Garrison along with neighboring Tennessee. As membership increased, it became necessary for Kentucky and Tennessee to separate, allowing for more localized leadership. The Bluegrass Garrison is what you will find in Kentucky, with a few members who live in southern

Indiana. Others who participate in central Indiana are members of that state’s Bloodfin Garrison. According to Barlow, there are 87 members spread throughout Kentucky. Next, Garrisons are broken down into squads, which allow for localized management of events. According to John Hoagland, squad leader for the Derby City Squad, Kentucky has three squads located in the more populated areas of the state. “These include Lexington, northern Kentucky, and of course Louisville,” Hoagland explains. “Events that occur outside of those areas are managed by individuals who reside in those areas, with direction from the Garrison or squad level. An example would be if there’s a convention in Bowling Green, then the Derby City Squad would manage it, but an event in Paducah might be handled by members who live in the region, or we might ask for the assistance of another Garrison close to the event site.”

Garrison size can vary from state to state. According to Hoagland, the Bluegrass Garrison currently has about 90 members, with the Derby City Squad at 45 approved members. Hoagland has been a member of the Legion since May of 2016, after many years of watching from the sidelines.

“My first exposure to the Legion, and into costuming in general, was in April 2005 at ‘Star Wars Celebration 3’ in Indianapolis,” he explains. He says he grew up a “‘Star Wars’ kid” and got every action figure his parents would let him have.

approved costume, a stormtrooper from “Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope,” but has a few other costumes in the works, including a biker scout from “Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi.” Although wearing his costume is a great deal of fun, Hoagland says he gets much more than just a good time out of the Legion.

“When we rode our bikes around the neighborhood, we’d pretend they were X-wing starfighters,” Hoagland says. “When I went to my first convention and I met guys who were wearing screen-accurate stormtrooper costumes, I thought, ‘Man, I really want to get into that.’ ” Hoagland says the requirements to become a member are fairly straightforward,

although somewhat challenging. “You must own a screen-accurate costume, and one that meets the standards set by the club, which can be found in our database,” he says. “Active membership requires that you do what’s called troop - participate in an event - at least one time per year, although I find that most people troop far more frequently.” Hoagland says he currently has a single

Having a way to enjoy ‘Star Wars’ while making other people happy, while doing charity work, while raising thousands of dollars for organizations like Make-A-Wish, Lexington children’s hospitals and St. Joseph Children’s Home - what’s not to love about that?” Barlow says most events are held at schools, libraries and nonprofit charity locations.

Georgio Dimitrov’s upbringing in Louisville and strategic mentoring from family members have led him to take on an exciting adventure as a football player overseas. His passion for football - known as soccer in the United States, of course - stems from his upbringing. Dimitrov has already begun to make his mark. He follows in the footsteps of his mother, father and maternal grandfather - all are well-known for their athletic achievements throughout their lifetime. His mother, Ludmila Dimitrov, is a former professional ice figure skater and champion from Moscow, Russia. His father served as inspiration for Dimitrov, as he also played soccer while growing up. His maternal grandfather was a coach for the sport as well. These close ties set him up for success as he began to enter into athletic competitions at a young age. “I moved to Barcelona, Spain, at around 12 years of age,” Dimitrov says. “I played and spent most of my teen years there, from ages 13 to 18.” He holds Bulgarian citizenship, and is able to live in Barcelona while pursuing his passion. “I was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and lived there through my childhood,” he says. “I experienced most of my life there, so it always feels special to come back, which I do regularly.”

President and CEO Krish Sastry

IN GOOD COMPANY KRISH SASTRY & APPRISS INC. IS LEADING THE WAY THROUGH INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY Writer / Carrie Vittitoe Photography Provided by Swope Design Group & Caleb Perry

I often drive around Louisville and find myself wondering what happens in the various businesses I pass, especially if it’s a business whose work isn’t obvious or well-known in the community. Most Louisvillians have heard of UPS, Humana and YUM!, but there are thousands of businesses whose work stretches far beyond the borders of our state. One such business is Appriss Inc., a data technology and analytics company headquartered in Jeffersontown that is focused on finding solutions to society’s problems. President and CEO Krish Sastry has been with the company for eight years in various roles, and was drawn to the company in large part due to its mission.

“We all like to have an exalted sense of what we do, how it matters and how it changes the world, but quite literally what Appriss does saves lives,” he says. While he formally took on the role of CEO in late summer of 2020, he worked closely with founder and former CEO Mike Davis to ensure his succession would not only be accepted, but also welcomed by the company’s worldwide staff. Davis founded the company in 1994 with Yung Nguyen when they created Victim Information and Notification Everyday (VINE), a notification network inspired by the murder of Mary Byron, a young woman who was killed by her former boyfriend after he was released from prison unbeknownst to her. While VINE began small, it has grown over the years to include 43 states, Washington, D.C., and Guam. Any person can 22 / MAY 2021

sign up for automatic notifications to find out an incarcerated person’s custody status, such as whether he or she has been transferred to another facility or released on bail. The company’s growing connections with law enforcement entities via VINE eventually helped it move into other avenues of public protection. In 2006 Appriss developed NPLEx, a technology that tracks purchases of cold medicines that include pseudoephedrine, to ensure people don’t purchase it in quantities sufficient to create (and potentially sell) methamphetamines. If you’ve ever tried to purchase Claritin-D at your local pharmacy and been asked for your driver’s license, you’ve probably experienced NPLEx even if you didn’t realize it. It didn’t take Appriss too long to recognize that while meth is a big problem, opioids are an even bigger one, affecting too many families in Kentucky and across the nation. Appriss developed state-of-the-art technology known as prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs), used to monitor opioid dispensations in 43 states and territories.

“PDMPs are used for multiple purposes,” Sastry says. “They help doctors and pharmacists identify potential issues of abuse, addiction or diversion, and make better decisions as they serve patients. They also help state agencies identify potential bad actors that may be running pill mills.” Appriss has gone on to develop tools and technology to assist doctors in analyzing patient risks, and help refer patients to appropriate venues for treatment around mental and behavioral health conditions that may be at the root of addiction and drug abuse. The movement from victim notification to prescription drug monitoring was largely organic, and grew from the connections Appriss had originally made with law enforcement agencies and pharmacies. Those same connections helped the company branch further into a broader array of solutions to improve workplace and community safety, and develop data

and Illinois - a long way from a company of two individuals in 1994.

“We leverage data, technology and analytics to improve the world we live in, and solve what we call forever problems,” Sastry says.

“This is a company that’s now, for the 25th year in a row, continued to grow,” Sastry says. “We’ve not missed a beat from the 2000 dot-com era through the housing crisis of 2007, and even through COVID.”

Although Appriss began small, it has grown to nearly 1,000 employees. While some staff members have come from direct hiring, others, including staff in London and Poland, have come through acquisitions. In the U.S., Appriss has offices in approximately 10 locations including California, Colorado, Virginia, Minnesota

This unique ability to sustain growth was another trait that attracted Sastry to the company. When Sastry first came to Appriss, he was brought in as the head of product strategy at

“I started out Appriss Health as a separate business unit within Appriss, and had the fortune of guiding it for the first couple years,” he says. He eventually went back to a corporate role in the company on the retail side of things, which meant a move to California. He returned to Louisville in 2018 and became chief operating officer. 10 WAYS TO GO GREEN THIS YEAR Writer / Samantha Kupiainen Photography Provided

At first reference, some might cringe when they hear the phrase “going green.” It can carry the stigma of being not only expensive but time-consuming as well. However, being environmentally friendly doesn’t have to break the bank and it won’t take you forever and a day to make a few lifestyle changes. Here are 10 simple ways to “go green” and live more environmentally friendly.

For students, many teachers and professors now provide their students with lecture notes prior to class. Instead of printing the notes or copying them by hand, an eco-friendly and quicker option is to take notes electronically, such as on a computer or tablet. By taking notes electronically, it saves countless sheets of paper and pens. Plus, you don’t have to worry about your dog eating your homework and the notes last forever.

Although it might take more planning on your part, bringing reusable bags to the grocery store is tremendously great for the environment. Plastic bags take 500-plus years to break down in a landfill, according to the Center for Biological Diversity. Additionally, it costs more to recycle bags than they’re actually worth, so most recycling facilities won’t take them. Investing in reusable bags saves energy and money in the long run.

MEMORABLE GIFT IDEAS FOR MOTHER’S DAY

Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and hopefully we will all be getting back to normal soon and visiting people and places more regularly. Thank goodness. Even though there may be some restrictions still in place, there’s no reason not to spoil mom this year. Here are a few options that are sure to inspire your Mother’s Day plans for this year.

BREAKFAST IN BED While this one might be overdone, it’s still special. I mean, how often is your mom not the first one up in the house? Give her some extra sleep time, and surprise her in bed with her favorite cup of coffee, a delicious breakfast, and a magazine or paper she loves. Then leave her alone to enjoy some peace and quiet. Unless she invites you in - in which case snuggle up, but don’t spill on the bed.

the day, like ordering her favorite lunch or playing a family game.

DOCUMENT THE DAY However you spend the day, document it. Photo gifts are lots of fun, but one way to change this up is to give your mom an Instax camera or pull out the old Polaroid. Have her take photos all day long, and then compile and go through them at the end of the day. Be sure to have plenty of film. Add notes to the back of the photos at that time. Write down silly moments and heartfelt notes, so when you pull them out next time you can remember the day like it was yesterday.

SEND HER SOMEWHERE

Check your local shops and spas to see if they are offering anything special for moms. Maybe surprise her with a day away or a massage. Maybe just send her to her favorite shop at the mall with a gift card, and give her time to pick out a few things she’d like. Sending her somewhere doesn’t mean you SPEND THE DAY TOGETHER have to put her on a flight or send her to No matter how many moms want time away another country (although that gesture on Mother’s Day, there are still some who would be amazing). Whether you send just want to be surrounded by their loved her to the spa down the street or on a girls ones. Some mommas would give everything weekend with her closest friends, the time to have all their kids in one place for an away will be much appreciated. entire day or weekend. Get with your dad and/or siblings and try to have a full day planned, during which you all just hang out WRITE A THANK-YOU LETTER with your mom and add small surprises into This seems like a simple gesture, right? Well, it is. However, it’s easy to forget all 32 / MAY 2021

the things we take for granted that mom does day in and day out - and do we always say thanks for those gestures? Well, this is your chance to thank her for all those things that you think about often, but don’t always verbalize. Write a thank-you note by hand and then slip it in the mail. The gesture of doing it ahead of time, and making sure to mail it so it will make it to your mom by Mother’s Day, will not go unnoticed.

HAVE A MOM “YES” DAY Hear me out, because this can be lots of fun. Make sure the whole family is available ahead of time, and then pop mom in the car and go. Give her the rules (whatever you choose), like spending no more than $100 or traveling no farther than 50 miles, and let her pick four or five things you have to do with her, no matter what they are. If you don’t know what a “yes” day is, look it up. It’s usually done for kids, but with mom at the helm, who knows what you’d have to do without saying no? However you spoil your mom this year, don’t forget to take it all in while you do it. Even though Mother’s Day is supposed to be all about mom, something we learned from the past year is that you never know what’s around the corner. Make sure to enjoy all the little things about the time spent with your mother. She’ll love it just as much as you will.

Maurice Sweeney with his wife, Jannette

Public School, Maurice followed in his father’s footsteps, with involvement in more than 30 boards and commissions. “A lot of people go full-circle following in their parents’ footsteps,” Maurice says. “Their dad is a lawyer, they become a lawyer - dad’s a doctor, they become a doctor. My dad was president of the NAACP in Louisville from 1936 to 1938 and I was president from 1983 to 1984. I thought that was kind of cool.” While Dr. Sweeney fought for equal use of public golf courses and the ability to attend the Iroquois Amphitheater in 1947, many years later Maurice led the participation of minority venders during the PGA Ryder Cup, and his brother’s trucking company helped in the reconstruction and modification of the Iroquois Amphitheater.

Writer / Beth Beckwith Photographer / Andrew Kung

Maurice Sweeney is the youngest child of the late Dr. Pruitt Owsley Sweeney, who was a renaissance man born in the late 1800s in Liberty, Kentucky. Respected in the community, the doctor and his wife Susa raised their four children on their 312-acre dairy farm outside of Middletown, purchased in 1947. Dr. Sweeney purchased the land after selling property he owned across from Louisville Gardens at 5th Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard. That property was sold to businessman James Graham Brown. Dr. Sweeney used the proceeds to purchase the property he

Before there was a Locust Creek, the subdivision in east Jefferson County, there was Happy Hour Farm. Until December of 1999, Maurice maintained 100 head of beef cattle. That same farmland now has more than 400 homes.

Although it took years, Dr. Sweeney was successful in his efforts, which allowed blacks to play golf at public golf courses and led to equal pay for black teachers. As a child Maurice had no idea that his father contributed so much to the black community in Louisville. One early example of Maurice’s leadership ability was at Eastern High School. Maurice helped start and organize the Students to Promote Better Relations club and became the school’s first black student council president. Through the decades, Maurice has worked for the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights, National City Bank, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, where he spearheaded the governor’s management trainee program and ran his brother’s businesses when he died in 1999.

Maurice is greatly inspired by his parents, who worked diligently to bring unity and equality to his family and society at large. His mother, who was raised on her family farm in western Maurice believes nothing builds character Kentucky, obtained her home economics like taking care of cattle and milking twice degree from Kentucky State University and a day every day, as his mother and three was a home economics teacher. In addition, siblings did after Dr. Sweeney died in 1960. Mrs. Sweeney maintained the farm after Dr. While Maurice’s brother Deryl was a captain Sweeney’s death, and it was her perseverance in the Marine Corps and his sister Phyllis and exemplary management skills that was the first black teacher at Anchorage contributed to the farm’s success as a diary

Maurice learned more about his father’s humanitarian efforts when sorting through “I had a lady, who at the time was 101 years old articles and letters after the death old, eagerly tell me stories about selling of his father. One of Maurice’s biggest turkeys to my father,” Maurice recalls. “One surprises when going through his father’s time I was at the barbershop and a man told scrapbook was finding a program from me my dad was like Michael Jordan. The guy Churchill Downs dated May 6, 1952. It had missed my father visiting his school for listed the seventh horse in the fourth race as a speech, and everyone told him he’d really Deryl’s Girl, owned by P.O. The farm was a show place at the time, featuring the first modern milking parlor in Jefferson County. School classes would often come from the city for field trips and venture to the farm to witness how milk was processed. Maurice recalls a specific adventure on the farm.

Although many homes have been built around the pasture where cattle used to graze and where he hosted his famous annual goat roast, Maurice still reminisces about the farm days by spending time in the “While helping a friend move to Jeffersontown basement, where he repurposed wood from the original house. in 1999, there was a drought that year and it was difficult to keep hungry cows fenced With the wisdom and strength of his lineage in,” he says. “My mom called me to say, ‘Maurice, you need to come home now.
