Later Eastern Airlines and Trans World Airlines operated at Bowman, until those operations moved to Standiford Field in 1947. In the 1940s Bowman was known as the busiest airport in the country, serving as a training facility for American troops during World War II. It was even in the movies, serving as the backdrop for the film “Goldfinger” in the early 1960s. Today it serves as a local home for private aircraft and is the place where many aspiring pilots get their wings.

It’s unlikely Bowman could imagine the site today, especially the upcoming spectacle of thousands of people racing down the airport’s runways. The IPA 5K on the Runway (presented by the Independent Pilots Association) is just one of the highlights of BowmanFest, a celebration of the historic aviation hub that will include displays of historic aircraft, airborne military maneuvers and plenty of Noentertainment.one,ofcourse, enjoys the idea of a delay when it comes to airports, but 2022 will be the first opportunity for Bowman officials to hold a 100th anniversary celebration. For the past two years, the event has been postponed due to COVID-19-related issues, according to Pat MacDonald, who leads the group producing the event. For the record, Bowman Field’s official opening date was May 12, 1920, when Bowman and partner Robert H. Gast began operations there.
It was just over 100 years ago when A.H. Bowman went into business, setting up shop on Taylorsville Road, primarily to operate an aerial photography business. That site became Bowman Field, a pristine 426 acres that has seen neighborhoods and businesses spring up at its edges in the intervening

He says the two-day BowmanFest drew 25,000 people throughout two days in 2019. However, the 100-year celebration should be the biggest one to date, he says. More than 1,000 runners are expected to dash down the runways as part of the IPA 5K on the Runway race, which includes opportunities to sprint down Bowman’s historic runways. The course takes runners on a unique path around the site, past live plane displays and interactive family activities. Because it is one of the flattest, fastest courses in the city, many individuals will be shooting for personal bests. Hildreth, who has lived in the Louisville area most of his life, did a number of recordings and some touring before meeting Jamey Aebersold and becoming a member of the faculty for the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops. In 1999 Hildreth got a call from Paul Hegele, pastor at Ascension Lutheran Church.
At the time he was expecting his first child, so he knew he wasn’t going to be touring for a while. He became Ascension’s director of music in January of 2000. Right from the start he felt at home, and he appreciated the fact that folks at the church encourage creative endeavors such as themed services like Dixieland/ragtime, Caribbean, Brazilian or Hispanic.

“That’s when I discovered jazz,” Hildreth says. He graduated in 1989 with a music degree with a jazz emphasis. Two years later he earned an English degree. He put the English degree on the back-burner and became a professional musician, playing with a number of different jazz and rock groups, including a group he formed in 1992 called Java Men, which incorporates traditional jazz, fusion, world music and InAmericana.1994heplayed on the second stage at Lollapalooza, a four-day music festival. He also played at the Knitting Factory in New York City, a club that books musicians who don’t follow the usual boundaries of rock and jazz.
“Thereclicked.was something about the place that just felt right,” Hildreth says.

“I liked music but I never took myself too seriously,” he says. Though the pull of creativity was always there, he had other interests too, so he attended Bellarmine to pursue a degree in English and become an English teacher. On his way to classes, however, he took a detour and stopped through the music department where he played piano in practice rooms, and chatted with teachers and students. This felt like the world he belonged in, so ultimately he decided to switch his major to music.

“He told me, ‘We’re looking for a music director and someone with jazz experience. Would you like to do that?’ and I said, ‘Nope, I don’t think so,’” Hildreth says with a chuckle. Hegele persuaded Hildreth to come for a visit and when he did, something

“We’ve had straight, traditional jazz, and more electric, modern, soul jazz, as well as jazz with a fresh feel,” Hildreth says. “[The festival] has really been a labor of love for Hildreth,me.”who has two children, enjoys long walks, good coffees and binging on Netflix. Music, however, remains his great passion. People who lament quitting music often ask Hildreth what made him stick with it. He tells them he didn’t have a choice.

gospel and soul music. Four years ago the church council gathered and the parishioners suggested starting a yearly jazz festival. Hildreth’s ears perked up, as the idea was right up his alley. Soon after, the ALC Jazz Festival was born. They came up with a template in which six bands would perform on two stages (one indoor and one outdoor). Bands perform at the top of the hourone on the outdoor stage and the next on the indoor stage - so there is never a lag in “Thisperformances.way,one band can start the minute the other finishes, so the music is continuous,” Hildreth says. The event features a variety of local and touring artists (usually around 70 musicians in total), offering various types of jazz from different generations and from all parts of the city.

In addition, Goodwood Brewing will be on-site, as will the Comfy ForCow.the first two years, the festival was held in July to coincide with the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops, which were twoweek camps that pulled in people from all over the country including New York and California. The ALC Jazz Festival was held on the weekend sandwiched between those two weeks. The camps have since been discontinued, so last year festival organizers moved the event to September for cooler Nowtemperatures.initsfourth year, the festival, which is now called the Autumnal Jazz Fest, will be held on September 10 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Ascension Lutheran Church. The first band to perform at 3 p.m. on the outdoor stage is Isotope, a group of young college students, one of which is a former student of Hildreth. Following their performance, the Sparks Quartet, named after leader Kevin Sparks, will take the indoor stage at 4 p.m. of time of of

At 7 p.m. Street Talk, a smooth-jazz and neo-soul group, will perform on the outdoor stage. The evening will conclude with the Jamey Aebersold quartet playing indoors from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. The festival has grown steadily each year. Last year it attracted around 300 people.
“We play modern jazz with a few surprises,” he says. At 5 p.m. Potassium Man, led by Gabe Evens, will play on the outdoor stage. Evens writes all of the music for this group - a high-energy jazz band made up of seven people with three horns. At 6 p.m. things move back indoors for Old Lou’s Ragtime Band, a group that blends young and seasoned players for traditional ragtime jazz.

Bonifer maintains that the Autumnal Jazz Fest is probably one of the best-kept secrets in “ButLouisville.itshouldn’t be,” he says. The Autumnal Jazz Fest will be held at Ascension Lutheran Church, located at 13725 Shelbyville Road in Louisville.
“People are just really happy to come out for the music,” Hildreth says. “We get a lot of curiosity seekers who want to see what’s going on, and then there are those people who will come to these festivals no matter where they’re located.”
“We don’t yet have the good problem of needing to look for more space, but we may in the future,” Hildreth says. The festival draws a diverse crowd, attracting high school and college students all the way up to retired folks.

Soon after purchasing a house, Kristen O’Meally went on Instagram in search of decor and color inspiration. While scrolling through the site, she came across flashcards with images of children on them. It struck her that every flashcard only included images of Caucasian children.
“Thecards.only marketing we were doing was on social media,” O’Meally says. At the time, they had a small following - around 200 to 300. Now they have thousands. Their posts offered parents tips on how to treat their children with regard to diversity, self-love and self-awareness. For example, one of the best things a parent can do is cultivate diverse friends themselves. The sisters knew SPIN
“I thought, ‘This would be great if it represented all races rather than just one,’” O’Meally says. “At that moment, a light bulb went off in my head.” She called her sister, Lamia Haley, and the two began to brainstorm. She brought up the idea of creating flashcards with different shades of skin tones including African American, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, biracial and multiracial. They took it a step further, thinking how neat it would be if they could find a way to inspire kids to feel good about themselves by using words of affirmation. They decided to make alphabet flashcards with encouraging assertions for each letter. For example, “A is for ‘I am amazing,’” “B is for ‘I believe in myself,’” and “C is for ‘I can change the world.’”
It took the sisters about a month and a half to develop the final design of the affirmation
The women decided to add affirmations to each baby’s onesie. One says, “I am kind.” Another reads, “I am amazing.” A third says, “I am loved.” The dolls come in brown, dark brown, and fair. “We designed the affirmation cards to reflect a different skin tone with a pop of color to catch children’s eyes,” Haley says. In October of 2020, O’Meally and Haley began selling their affirmation cards on their website, kidsforculture.com. Four months later they received an email from the buyer for Walmart’s baby department. She had found Kids for Culture on Instagram through hashtags and was intrigued by the brand. She reached out because she was interested not only in selling the sisters’ affirmation cards at Walmart, but also expanding the line by adding a book and plush toy.
“Our minds were blown,” Haley says. “It’s true that Kristen and I had talked beforehand about what we would do if someone contacted us and said they wanted to sell our product, but we were joking. That meant expediting the timeline, which might not have been difficult except that a pandemic was happening, which exacerbated shipping delays. The Positive Pals are not named, as that’s half the fun of doll ownership. “We want the kids to be able to name their own doll after themselves, their friends or close family members,” Haley says.

The sisters already have plans in the works to expand the line to create even more ethnicities and shades. They also recently released a new product - a skin career puzzle.
The sisters, both born in Lexington, attended high school in Louisville. Now O’Meally lives in the D.C. area and Haley resides in Nashville, though their parents still live in Louisville.

There is not a single habit that I’ve kept this consistently and, in the process, this practice has taught me a lot.
Before starting this practice, I didn’t hang out much in a state of gratitude regularly. For the most part, I hung out in a state of survival and suffering. Thanks to the repetition of this daily practice, mantra or even prayer of gratitude, my mind is slowly but surely becoming more primed to seek out what’s right versus what’s wrong.

As a child, I remember seeing the daily Bridge section of the Courier-Journal newspaper and wondering what all that North, South, East and West stuff was about. It seemed mysterious to me then and, honestly, remains that way today. Bridge is not necessarily an easy game to pick up, but it is a game that never gets dull. This is why Dotty Losey, president of the Louisville Bridge Club, has been playing the game for 40-plus years. “It’s probably the most complicated game of all of them,” she says. “I’ve heard chess players say that.”

What is Bridge, exactly? Bridge is a four-person game in which players on opposite sides are partnered up. North and South are partners, as are East and West. Players are dealt 13 cards each from a standard deck of 52 cards, but before any cards are played in what is called a trick, bidding happens. “When you’re bidding, you’re describing what your hand looks like,” Losey says. “You are telling your partner whether you’ve got something worth playing with or not. It’s a conversation.” Bidding goes clockwise around the table until three players pass. A pass is sort of like saying, “I don’t have any good cards,” or “I’ve already shared all the information I can share about my hand.” At this point, actual play begins. To a novice, the bidding process may seem like players speaking in riddles. Fortunately, a player can ask the partner of a bidder, so if East makes a bid, West can explain what that bid means to a player who asks what that bid means. “When we play in sanctioned games, we are always ethical and disclose when asked,” Losey says. “It is kind of like a secret language, but you’re obliged not to keep it secret.” When bidding ends and a contract is set, the person who first bid the contract’s suit (for example, Clubs) becomes the declarer. The player to the left of the declarer makes the opening lead (plays one card from their hand), and the player to the left of that person becomes the dummy. The dummy (always the partner of the declarer) puts all their cards on the table face-up so that everyone can see their hand. The declarer physically plays the cards of the dummy as well as their own hand. Every person must play a card in the suit that was led unless or until a player doesn’t have any more cards in that Oncesuit.every player has put down a card, the trick is done and the person who played the highest card in that suit wins the trick. The winner then leads a card, and the other players, in clockwise order, play a card to the trick, following suit unless they have no more cards in the suit and can play a trump card or must discard from another suit.
Losey’s parents and grandparents played Bridge, and when she was in high school, her mom began to teach her the game but she didn’t take to it. However, in college, a bunch of her friends played so Losey decided to give it another chance. “We played terribly, but we had a good time,” she says. As with many pursuits, the more she played, the more she learned and the better she played. She even met her husband Bob playing Bridge. Given her decades-long interest in the game, it seems obvious why Losey would be president of the local association. Archives suggest the club formed in the 1930s

The Louisville Bridge Club is affiliated with the American Contract Bridge League, so when individuals play at the Bridge Club, they earn points that can potentially get them to life-master status. Each game costs $7.50 per person.
In-person games are played at the club five days a week - Mondays at 10:30 a.m., Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., Thursdays at 12:30 p.m., and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Interested players can show up about 10 minutes before the game with a partner, if they have one. If not, they can “call the Bridge Club, find out who the director of the game is on the day you want to play, and they will find you a partner,” Losey says.
“In 1936 the Louisville Bridge Club was incorporated,” she says. Through the years the club has had many homes, but it has been in Plainview on Linn Station Road since 2016 - its biggest location to date.

Omar Sharif, the famous actor, wrote a column about Bridge for the Chicago Tribune and penned two books about the game.

My parents owned a restaurant and catering company, so I believe it’s important to eat good, high-quality food at your picnic. It doesn’t all have to be homemade. Don’t overdo it. Set a budget. I prefer to provide the food for my guests instead of a pitchin/potluck. It makes things easier for everyone and you won’t have duplicate items. Also, guests won’t feel added pressure of what to bring and they can enjoy themselves. Who knows - maybe your guests will reciprocate and invite you to the next picnic or party. Set a budget and think of your signature dishes (what you make best), and work from there. I like to serve either fried chicken or sandwiches at a picnic. I like to buy fried chicken from a local restaurant or grocery, or make good sandwiches (ham and cheese on French bread, or BLTs on French bread). Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Keep picnic supplies in one location. I keep plastic cups, plates, silverware, napkins and tablecloths on a separate shelf in the pantry. I’m always ready to plan a picnic. If you don’t have these supplies, it’s an inexpensive investment for cute, plastic picnic supplies.

Picnic Pro Tip: Allow yourself an extra 30 minutes before you leave, and double check your picnic list to make sure you have everything packed and ready to go. 4.PACK AHEAD
I like to pack a supply bag (cups, plates, silverware, napkins, paper towels for any messes, wet wipes, garbage bags and tablecloths) in advance. Keep all the drinks and food in the fridge until shortly before leaving to guarantee they will be cold. I pack the food and drinks in two soft cooler bags with ice packs. Pack some bubbles, Frisbees, hula hoops and other toys for the kids. I also like to bring a wireless speaker to play music during the picnic.
Bonus Picnic Pro Tip: Don’t forget salt and pepper, mayo, mustard and other condiments. I like to use packets so each guest can take a few packets if they need to.

5. HAVE FUN Don’t stress about your picnic. This is the time to ask any guests who arrive early to help unpack the car, and carry the bags and coolers to the picnic table and set up. Take a break and pour drinks for guests, and turn on the music while setting up the meal. You spent a lot of time planning and now it’s time to have fun, enjoy the food and spend time with your guests. The extra planning makes for a successful picnic party.

The ensuing 12 years would see Jeffersontown become an even greater city than local residents could ever imagine, which says a lot for a town that has always been at the forefront regarding business and community.

On a related note, Dieruf also had a website created so residents could easily access Jeffersontown from the comfort of their own homes. CivicPlus, a cloud-based content management system, was chosen to develop the city website, and they continuously provide upgrades to make sure that residents are afforded the greatest ease and transparency when conducting city business online. The website contains information regarding every city department including police, fire and public works, as well as upcoming events and links to social media.
Dieruf holds a firm belief that residents of Jeffersontown deserve the best of the best. Consequently, he hires only the best

everything configured for growth and manageability, and throughout his time in office he made sure that every department in the city had the most upto-date technology, from computers to the most advanced software, monitors, projector screens, phone systems, digital program signs and security systems. The list of technological upgrades made in Jeffersontown throughout the past 12 years is astounding, and new equipment is added continuously to keep the town progressing and running efficiently.
Having grown up as a part of Jeffersontown’s oldest family-owned and -operated business - Dieruf Hardware, which opened its doors in 1946 and is still going strong - Dieruf was highly aware of the importance of good management and personal, smalltown customer care. He determined to run Jeffersontown in the same manner, with financial skill and that same type of strong customer service, while also bringing a sense of professionalism and accountability to City Hall. One of the first steps Dieruf took was to gain the trust of his department heads and make them understand that they would get whatever their departments needed, but just because money was available in their yearly budgets, that did not mean they were free to spend it all. He came up with a system of improvement projects that determined what was most needed throughout the city, so that funds would be directed to those projects first. Through the course of his 12year tenure (three four-year terms), Dieruf assumed the responsibility to make sure that every department in Jeffersontown received exactly what it needed, from small computer upgrades to complete building renovations. Through fairness in meeting each department’s needs, Dieruf instilled pride and loyalty in his team.

Shortly after Dieruf took office, a tornado hit Jeffersontown, leaving a lot of damage in its wake - trees fallen on cars and houses, wires down and blocked, and flooding all over town. Dieruf and Public Works Director Jimmy Franconia both delayed their scheduled vacations and immediately set to work clearing up the mess. When news reporters arrived three days later to film the devastation, they had to ask where the tornado hit, as they could not find the damage. This brought a huge smile to Dieruf’s face, knowing that city workers did their best to get the town back to normal.
When Dieruf stepped into his role as mayor, Jeffersontown was $17 million in debt. Thanks to his decision to refinance the debt and reduce the payoff date by 10 years, the city saved over $1 million in interest and even paid off the debt one year early, in February of 2021. In fact, the city currently has $25 million in the bank with $17.4 million appropriated for upcoming capital Inprojects.addition to his excellent money management skills, Dieruf is also very pro-business. Throughout his tenure Dieruf has remained approachable and supportive, listening to his employees, trusting them and allowing them to do their jobs. As Damon Sistrunk, head of Jeffersontown’s Revenue Department, states, “Mayor Dieruf makes good suggestions, knows what he is doing and is always a step or two ahead of you. I just trust that he’s got a plan. He’s always prepared, calm and personable.” Those qualities are evident in all of Dieruf’s interactions. He is a very thoughtful, savvy individual, capable of assessing a situation very quickly and immediately providing the perfect solution to any problem.

A community makes a town, and Dieruf has worked assiduously to see to it that Jeffersontown provides the best of everything a town has to offer. In addition to the general ongoing maintenance of the city and its amenities - such as the Plainview Swim and Tennis Center, Senior Citizens Center, Community Center, Historical Museum, Farmers Market and morethe city has also secured more than $38 million in grants for various projects that have further enhanced the town, including streetscapes and a network of sidewalks and off-road paths that provide a more livable and workable community.
Jeffersontown is nearing the end of Dieruf’s time as mayor. It went by fast to be sure, but the legacy he leaves will last much longer.

Office rating ever, which translated into lower insurance rates for every resident and business in Jeffersontown. He has taken leading roles on numerous boards and committees including the Kentucky League of Cities, the Kentuckiana Regional Planning & Development Agency, Campbellsville University, Greater Louisville Inc., and the Kentucky Law Enforcement Council, to name just a few.
Speaking of law enforcement, the Jeffersontown Police Department grew 10% under Dieruf’s tenure, and has also added social workers and victim advocates to facilitate their efforts at crime prevention and community policing. Jeffersontown Police Chief Richard Sanders credits the department’s excellent reputation to the pride and professionalism Dieruf has brought to the town, as well as support from the mayor, City Council and community.
A new facility was recently constructed for the Public Works Department, and an upto-date Jeffersontown Police Department headquarters is also in the works, as well as a 9/11 First Responders Remembrance Plaza, which will stand next to the newly remodeled Fire Department. An exquisite Memorial Plaza and Freedom Wall were created in Veterans Memorial Park, along with an all-inclusive playground. Soon, a performance amphitheater and Grand Lawn will be constructed nearby, continuing the effort to connect the public to the water’s edge of Jeffersontown’s beautiful Chenoweth Run stream.
