JOB SEARCHING DURING A PANDEMIC Writer / Elizabeth Shultz, M.Ed., CRC, CPRW Shultz Career Consulting
Whether you suddenly found yourself unemployed, or realized job security is not to be taken for granted and have spent time looking for employment, you know the job search game has changed recently. Less than six months ago, the job market was considered an employee market, meaning the average job seeker would likely have multiple options. However, according to a July 2020 report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are now approximately 16 million unemployed individuals in the U.S. That’s a lot of competition. Even the most qualified job seekers are having to make concessions. RESUMES ARE MORE THAN KEYWORDS Prior to the pandemic, only about 2% of applicants received an interview after submitting an online application. If there are 16 million people unemployed and half of those folks are actively applying for work by sending out a conservative estimate of 25 resumes per month, then 200 million resumes are hitting job boards and career portals across the US. How do you stand out? Think culture. An employer will hire someone they like over someone with more qualifications. After all, you can’t teach personality. Think about the impact of a personality that doesn’t fit in with a team. It could be a detrimental hiring move, undermining the productivity of an entire department. Check the employer website for clues about the work environment and
company culture. Then take it a step further and check out their social media sites. What type of image are they projecting? From the website, you may also be able to determine who you will be working with directly. If so, check out their LinkedIn pages. Then, tie this information directly into the professional statement on your resume or cover letter in a genuine way. JOB SEARCH STRATEGY First, let’s explore what jobs are available now. As of July 2020, the following areas saw gains - government, professional and business services, hospitality, health care, manufacturing, transportation and warehouse, real estate, and social assistance. You can increase your chances of finding employment if you consider crossing industries. Start with an inventory of your transferrable skills, or skills that are applicable across multiple industries. Some examples include customer service, leadership, data analysis, adaptability and technology literacy. Networking is a must, even in a pandemic, and LinkedIn is your friend. Yes, it can be intimidating. But remember we all started out with zero connections. Look for opportunities within trade and professional organizations that could include organized activities. Set time aside weekly to engage in posts or private messages to nurture relationships. They will bear fruit. Remember the hidden job market. This refers to jobs that are not publicly posted. By networking, you are more likely to become aware of job opportunities not OCTOBER 2020 / 9
available to the general public. KEEP A POSITIVE OUTLOOK Keep hope. Remember, this is a super competitive market. Little victories should be celebrated, such as getting an employer response even if it’s a rejection. It still takes time and effort to respond to applications, especially considering the employers could be seeing thousands of resumes for one opening. It may take longer to find the right job, but don’t be afraid to accept a job offer in the meantime. Some work is better than no work. Job seekers with gaps on their resumes tend to be at a disadvantage. RESOURCES With all the competition, don’t pull a template off the internet for a resume. Don’t neglect your LinkedIn profile and summary. These are the pillars of your job search, and it makes sense to invest time and effort in them. If writing isn’t your thing, or if you’re having trouble coming up with accomplishments or powerful adjectives, there are resources. Kentucky Career Center, the Urban League, and even the library system offer free services to the general public. If you need a more personalized approach, try hiring a career counselor or professional resume writer like those at Shultz Career Consulting in Jeffersontown. They will have the expertise to establish the best platform to showcase your skills and attributes to the right potential employers, giving you a competitive edge over other applicants. For more information or to speak with Elizabeth, check out ShultzCareer.com or call (502) 819-5881.

KENTUCKY NURSES ASSOCIATION LEADS BY EXAMPLE patient care in all settings. There are more than 90,000 nurses in Kentucky working in hospitals, physician offices, nursing As a child, Delanor Manson first encountered care facilities, outpatient clinics, schools, the loving care a nurse provides watching correctional facilities and private settings, her grandmother, who was a nurse at the old among others. Manson, chief executive officer of the Kentucky Nurses Association (KNA), attributes her passion for supporting and advocating for nurses to the steadfast dedication exhibited by her grandmother. The KNA is a professional organization that supports the state’s entire population of nurses. Essentially, it acts as a voice for Kentucky nurses and seeks to work for a healthier Kentucky, according to Manson. In addition to promoting the essential role of registered nurses in the health care field, the KNA serves as an advocate for quality
“In my first year of clinicals I watched nurses communicate with patients and their families and other professionals, and I thought, ‘Wow, they are so phenomenal,’” Manson says. “Then I also saw no one was helping them, so I decided while I was in nursing school that I was going to take care of nurses.” That’s what Manson has done throughout her entire career. In each of her varied professional roles, she has sought to aid nurses in their quest to aid others. Manson earned degrees in nursing and health care management, and has been a 10 / OCTOBER 2020
dynamic leader in both patient care as well as health care administration. She achieved the rank of captain in the U.S. Navy. In her 27 years in the Navy, she applied her nursing education in various positions in the U.S. as well as Japan, Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Puerto Rico. Delanor is the former deputy secretary for the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services. Prior to her work at the KNA, she was the associate vice president of research and design at Hosparus Health in Louisville. There, she provided leaders with innovation strategies, project design and management, and conducted research on best practices in electronic health record management. According to Manson, when the KNA was founded in 1906 the intent was to promote the profession of nursing, and set a standard for education and training. That mission has expanded since then, but the crux of the organization’s vision remains the same.
“The founding mothers established and maintained an educational standard, and instituted advocacy for nursing and nurses,” Manson says. The association’s founders established a foundation to advocate for the highest level of education, encouraged employers to ensure safe workplaces for nurses, and lobbied legislators for policies to keep nurses safe. The KNA is a constituent member of the American Nurses Association, which operates for registered nurses in the U.S. throughout its 54 state and territorial associations. The KNA has 11 chapters around the commonwealth and is the only statewide organization that supports every nurse. “When you have that many people on the front lines providing health care, you have to have a strong foundational base,” Manson says. In Kentucky, approximately one-third of nurses work in hospitals, leaving about 60,000 nurses utilizing their skills in the aforementioned settings. Manson says the KNA has focused recent efforts on educating the general population on the varied skills of nurses, and advocating for their inclusion on community boards and foundations to help improve the health of the nation. The initiative is in lockstep with the World Health Organization, which designated 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. “We have been focusing on really helping people to see nurses in a broader light, to understand how nurses actually impact the health of the nation,” Manson says. No health care crisis in modern memory has tested the resolve and tenacity of nurses quite like the coronavirus pandemic. Since COVID-19 upended the world earlier this year, health care professionals have been on the front lines, risking their own lives to care and advocate for patients.

“When COVID started, I wasn’t sure how the KNA as an organization was going to support nurses on the front lines,” Manson says. “We started getting calls from nurses asking, ‘What should I do? Should I go to work?’ I began to think, ‘How can we support them and let them know we are working for them?’” The KNA created the Kentucky Nurses Helping Nurses program to let all nurses know they are not alone. The program is a volunteer network of active and retired nurses who have expertise in mental health nursing, and are available to support nurses as they care for patients and families in this unprecedented time. The initiative is a collaborative effort between the KNA and the International Society of PsychiatricMental Health Nurses. “We wanted them to know we see you, we support you,” Manson says. The KNA also launched the Apricot Ribbon Campaign to show support for health care

SIX TIPS FOR DEVELOPING RELIABLE SELF-CONFIDENCE Writer / Dr. Dave Schroerlucke Photography Provided
Below are six research-based strategies that you can implement immediately to build the sort of robust self-confidence that can hold up against performance pressures and competitive stress.
Remember when power posing was all the rage? This fake-it-till-you-make-it approach to building self-confidence, popularized by Amy Cuddy, has since been discredited after 1. TRACK YOUR SUCCESSES numerous failed attempts at replication of Research suggests that the most effective her team’s original research findings. and durable source of confidence is repeated mastery experiences. To put it simply, the Though you might be able to fool others more you succeed the more confident you into thinking you are confident, it is become - but only if you actually notice and exceedingly difficult to fool yourself. You have to be pressure. Start a credible confidence log able to tell yourself that you can do it, and where you actually write these experiences believe it. down. This will serve as a sort of confidence memory bank – a collection of positive experiences that you can use to challenge your inner critic.
You might wonder if it is even possible to train yourself to be more reliably confident. The answer turns out to be yes. But like anything worth pursuing, building 2. are flooded with dopamine (the “feel-good” neurotransmitter), which makes you want to repeat the associated behavior. This is the secret behind the addictive quality of smartphone games like “Candy Crush” as well as the effectiveness of to-do lists. You can use the psychology of intermittent rewards to your advantage by breaking up your larger goals into a series of bitesized, dopamine-friendly steps, so that you can receive this behavior-reinforcing chemical reward more frequently. Start with small, easily reachable goals and build incrementally, slowly ramping up your goals and level of stress as you gain momentum and confidence. 3. TALK YOURSELF UP Confidence ultimately comes down to how you talk to yourself, which is why positive self-talk has become one of the pillars of applied sport psychology. Not to be confused with generic motivational chants of the “You can do it, rah rah rah” variety, positive self-talk involves personal
affirmations that are uplifting yet grounded in reality. Create a list of affirmations that put you in a confident frame of mind. The most effective affirmations are: • Brief: a single word or short phrase • Context-specific: a reminder of when you delivered in similar situations • Personally meaningful: it only has to make sense to you
unattainable and unreasonable. These dream killers often want to see you fail as a result of their own insecurities and feelings of inadequacy. Avoid naysayers like the plague. Surround yourself with supporters who want to see you succeed and who supply a steady stream of encouragement. I am not talking about cheerleaders and groupies here (although those are nice too). What you want is people in your inner circle who you trust to provide candid feedback, both positive and negative, in a way that communicates that they want the best for you and are pulling for you to reach your goals.

visualization but has since expanded to include all the senses. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (f MRI) research indicates that the same areas in the brain light up whether you are actually executing a skill or just imagining it. The brain literally cannot tell the difference. Mental imagery is often challenging at first but can be developed with practice. For those with no prior experience, it might be easier to start by imagining a simple, sensory-rich activity like eating a fruit. As you improve your ability to fully engage all of your senses, shift to mental rehearsal of performance-related skills. First, imagine what an ideal performance would look like to an external observer. Then, progress to imagining exactly what it will look and feel like from behind your own eyes. This one might sound a little woo-woo, but there is a reason it is a staple of mental preparation for world-class athletes and performers. It just works.

6. WATCH AND LEARN Finally, another great way to build confidence is to watch and emulate the best. Much like with mental imagery, brain research involving mirror neurons suggests that watching is often just as good as doing when it comes to performance. Find a performer who inspires you and make a point to regularly watch their best performances. When you are practicing or performing, imagine that you are that performer. In the best-case scenario, your model becomes yourself. Try to get your hands on video of yourself during an optimal performance. Watch the video over and over again as a way of training your brain to run that particular performance script.

CARNEY’S CARPET GALLERY 10302 Taylorsville Rd. Jeffersontown, KY 502-267-0558 carneyscarpetgallery.com
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
A family-owned business since the early 1970s, Carney’s Carpet Gallery was founded by John Carney’s father Perry in late 1972. Throughout the past five decades, the business has grown substantially. What started with just three sample boards of carpet has now grown into a 3,000-squarefoot warehouse and 3,600-square-foot showroom. Carney bought the business from his parents in January of 1998. “I’d done the corporate sales thing for a transportation company the prior 11 years out of college, and just got the itch to take on the business I grew up around as a boy,” Carney says. “I absolutely love my job, so I don’t call it work because I really do look forward to coming in.” In fact, he’s grown to love it even more than his hobby. “I used to be a pretty low-handicap golfer, but now I enjoy this place more than the course,” he says. “I just love being around people and meeting new ones.” Sometimes customer conversations don’t lead to a sale, and that’s fine by Carney. “I know we can’t be the solution for
everyone’s flooring needs and that’s OK,” says Carney, noting that the best compliment he can receive is when people come back or refer family and friends. “That tells me we’re doing things right.” Currently located on Taylorsville Road, the location is the company’s third since officially opening nearly 50 years ago. The first store was near the zoo and the second was on Bardstown Road, and the company then moved to Jeffersontown in 1977. “People said my dad was crazy because this little town was nowhere near what it is today,” Carney says. “We actually had a cow pasture next to us back then, where five or six cows grazed.” The company’s product mix has also evolved through the years. Gone are the large sheetvinyl displays. They currently carry luxury vinyl tiles and planks. Years ago the business offered a handful of wood sample cards, and now it features large wood displays. Carpet sales account for roughly 60% of total sales, and the company offers carpet displays that take up a considerable amount of store space. The family business is now in its third generation, as Carney’s oldest daughter Rachel helps in accounting and marketing, and his youngest son Jason runs the day-today operations. Carney still deals with customers who bought from his father, and his dad occasionally makes appearances at the business to check on things. “It’s always nice if my dad is here when a longtime customer comes in,” Carney says. “They talk about the old days - the floor he sold and the floor they bought.” Carney considers it special that the man who started it all is still offering insight and advice about the business nearly five decades later. “There aren’t many family-owned businesses approaching 50 years of service,” says Carney, who takes great pride in knowing a third generation in his family is now involved. Sometimes the staff even get visits from the fourth generation. “My wife and I have seven grandchildren - I can dream,” Carney says. “I think we have a good future and we sure do appreciate our past.”
A LOOK BACK AT LOUISVILLE’S BELOVED HALLOWEEN TRADITIONS Writer / Andrew Toy Photography Provided
Springtime seems to be when the world comes to life. However, we’re cut from a different cloth here in Louisville. For us the world comes to life in autumn, when the leaves show their darker colors before disengaging from deciduous trees, when clouds gather more frequently, and gusts of wind twirl the piles of leaves into orange whipped-cream toppers. Gone are the heat-stroke days and the stale, humid air. September 22 marks the official first day of fall on the calendar, but usually it’s the first weekend in October when fall begins. Autumn, in Louisville, is when houses come to life by displaying caricatures of the dead.
and folklore that dates back to before the Civil War, the citizens of Louisville have had a love affair with the dark, the horrifying and the unknown for many generations. This is evident all year long, but most notably during the Halloween season. And let’s face it - nothing is more unknown than how Halloween will proceed during this strange and unsettling year of the coronavirus.
With few movie releases to inspire masks and costumes (but plenty of face masks to go around for thousands of Halloweens to come), there’s no telling what our beloved holiday will look like this year. If kids are allowed to trick-or-treat, will participating homeowners be required to mark a line six feet from their doorstep and hope With an extensive history of haunted houses they make the treats into the bags? Will 22 / OCTOBER 2020
Halloween parties be confined to 10 people or fewer? Will people be too afraid to venture out altogether? While we don’t have a witch’s crystal ball to see what will happen this year, we can at least look back at what Louisville has done in the past to celebrate Halloween. Be sure to look up the relevant information before planning to attend these events. In years past, what normally kicked off the Halloween hullabaloo was the Louisville Zombie Walk, which normally takes place on the corner of Bardstown Road and Eastern Parkway. It typically takes place during the last week of August, when thousands of living corpses gather amidst live music and zombie costume contests.
What about closer to October? Well, that’s when all the haunted houses open their creaking doors to lure unsuspecting spectators. Frightening tours include the Devil’s Attic, Nightmare Forest and, the most twisted, Black Orchard Haunted House. Some will be open this year and some may not. A good place to see information and scheduled times, as well as ratings of each tour, is LouisvilleHalloween. com. The most COVID-friendly, if you will, is Danger Run. This is a scavenger-huntstyle game played completely in your car, and plays like a self-guided ghost tour. If you ever find yourself strolling down Old Louisville in the fall to gaze at the multicolored leaves above your head, you most certainly won’t want to miss one particular house that used to be a tuberculosis sanatorium. In the early 1900s, the Waverly Hills Sanatorium housed patients that were so close to death, they were practically zombies. In fact, so many sickly patients died that a body
isn’t that a good reason to start drinking pumpkin-spice lattes and gorging on bowls of chili? In 2014 the Crescent Hill Community Council hosted a free event at the Peterson-Dumesnil House, where attendees got to enjoy hot dogs, special “Crescent Hill recipe” chili, s’mores, ghost stories, and fellowship with costumed Zombie walks and haunted houses aren’t the only way to celebrate All Hallows’ Eve in neighbors. Sorry to get your hopes up, but it doesn’t look like this event will be Louisville. There are plenty of kid-friendly ways to observe Louisville’s favorite holiday, happening this year. However… including The World’s Largest Halloween Not all events need to be scheduled. Party held at the Louisville Zoo. affection for creepy circus clowns baring teeth. Some displays feature pirate ships and abandoned skulls. Of course, no Halloween would be complete - as one family on this street is well aware - without Charlie Brown complaining about his bag of rocks and his pal Linus looking out forevermore for the Great Pumpkin. But watch out - if you walk down this delightfully cluttered street, you just might meet a few “statues” that aren’t as fake as they seem. Who knows, it could very well take a lot more than a mere pandemic to squelch these homeowners’ Halloweendecorating spirits this year. Let’s hop across the river for a day trip, shall we? Sure, it’s not in Kentucky, but it’s a popular enough tradition that it counts. If you venture into Indiana, you can have a family fun day at Huber’s Orchard and Winery picking apples and pumpkins, and shopping for pumpkin bread, pumpkin jams, candy sticks and scarecrows. There’s a play
area for kids, ducks to feed, music and food. Let’s not forget that Halloween is a fun (if it can be called that) time to stroll through cemeteries and think about the dead below our feet. A favorite in town is Cave Hill Cemetery, the final resting place of George Rogers Clark, Revolutionary War officer and founder of Louisville. What’s a holiday without a parade? In the past, the Highlands would host a full-blown Halloween parade complete with food vendors, live music, kids and adults dressed
up in their goofiest and scariest costumes, showy Oldsmobiles, games and more. What about those families with young kids who are too sensitive to endure grown-ups dressing up as killer clowns and Sith Lords? Ever heard of Blackacre Conservancy? It’s a nature preserve and homestead located on Tucker Station Road. This little jewel of a park has special events all year long, and like the rest of Louisville, Halloween is their signature holiday, when they host the Corn Island Storytelling Festival. Last but not least (this one is open this year for families in cars), there’s the Jack O’Lantern Spectacular in Iroquois Park. It’s certainly a spectacle not to be missed, especially since other events will be so limited this year, and this would be the perfect time for those who’ve put it off. If you think there are a lot of pumpkins at Huber’s Orchard, you haven’t seen anything like this. Our beloved Halloween may be a bit limited this year, but Louisville will still find creative and unique ways to observe and celebrate the holiday while remaining safe and in compliance with coronavirusrelated rules. Not all events will occur like in past years, but there just might be some new frights that we can take part in during this freaky and weird Halloween of 2020.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FOR TRICK-OR-TREATING Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
Kids (and parents) love the magic of Halloween. Walking around at night, in costume, collecting candy, what’s not to love? But there’s many aspects of the evening that get parents feeling nervous, which is why safety for the evening is especially important.
layer up if it’s going to be cold because you don’t want to be frozen in the middle of your trick or treating route!
STAY WITH YOUR CHILDREN Join in on the fun and walk with them, even dress up if you like! At our house we take turns, one person hands out candy for an hour while the other takes the kids out and then we swap. If that’s not an option, maybe try to connect with a group of friends to Did you know only about one-third of parents trick-or-treat together. You might also try discuss Halloween safety with their kids? But to plan to have your kids go out with your keeping Halloween safe is very important, not neighbors, girl scout or cub scout troop, only for the safety of the kids, but also to keep or even cousins. Always make sure there is the magical feeling of the night. Here are a few some sort of adult supervision. tips to help keep your little ones safe while trick or treating this year: In case you do get separated from your CHECK THE WEATHER AND BE PREPARED Chances are it’ll be chilly, and if it isn’t when you head out, it will be by the time you head back as most fall nights are. reminders to practice and are important things to know for every day too. TRICK-OR-TREATING ETIQUETTE Make sure to only visit homes with a porch light on and only approach doors that are well lit. This one can be tricky these days with automatic lights and decor. Use your best judgment and always remind the kids to never enter a home or car for a treat! STAY VISIBLE If your kids are going to be out after dark then blinking LED safety lights are a great addition to the back of their costume or candy bag! Pick them up at any sporting goods store or order from Amazon. Not only will they stand out for you to see, but they’ll also attract the attention of others, keeping them extra safe. Reflective tape is another option that will make your child more visible when added to the back of their costumes or all sides of their candy bag.
BE COMFORTABLE While we know some costumes require the right shoe (hello Cinderella), let’s be real on Halloween night while trick-or-treating, no one wants their feet to be uncomfortable. Most costumes can handle rain boots or tennis shoes depending on the weather. Remember, the longer your feet feel good, the more candy you can get! Also, try to keep props to a minimum. If it’s part of the costume, make sure they are easily carried and it doesn’t have sharp edges or points. Try adding a strap to a sword, shield or really anything, so they can be thrown over the shoulder or held on your child’s back while walking from house to house. ADVANCE PLANNING Decide what streets you want to hit and which you’ll skip before you head out. There’s nothing like walking a route that’s too far for a little and getting stuck carrying them home. Make sure the route you pick is

Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing
WTR Computer Sales may be a one-man operation, but the man in charge has considerable skills and a heart for service. Bill Reeve started his career as a Mechanical Engineer with General Electric Corp., but no matter where he was employed, he always became the default information-technology person because he was so good at troubleshooting computer issues. When his colleagues got frustrated, he got motivated. “I’ve always had an interest in working on computers,” says Reeves, who sometimes recruits his wife, Sharon, and daughters April and Crista to help him when the shop gets busy. “I like figuring out what the problem is.”
to recycle a reusable computer, and most importantly, it felt nice to give computers to people who could not afford to purchase new computers.” Troubleshooting usually takes several hours depending on the problem, and if special parts need to be ordered, restoration will tend to take longer. If a customer brings a computer into the shop, Reeves will typically have it up and running the next day. If a customer’s computer has crashed and they are having trouble retrieving files, Reeves can usually salvage files as long as the hard drive hasn’t completely crashed.
“Usually it’s fine, just corrupted,” says Reeves, who offers free estimates. “If we don’t fix it, we don’t charge anything. A lot of companies need to charge something for their time. Since I’m retired this is like a hobby for me, so I just need to make After retiring from private industry, Reeves enough to pay the rent and utilities.” started WTR Computer Sales in 2012. “My vision for WTR Computers began Serving Jeffersontown, Fisherville, Elk many years ago when I would purchase Creek and Taylorsville, the business began parts at discounted prices and build new in a shop in Elk Creek but Reeves eventually computers from scratch,” says Reeves. moved to his current location on Taylorsville “I also started repairing computers for Road in Jeffersontown, a much more active friends. One of those customers is Mona Sullivan, who constantly refers friends and neighbors to his shop. “He’s kind, patient, honest and really good at what he does,” says Sullivan, who recently dropped off four computers with Reeves for hard-drive removal. “Plus, he’s always trying to save you money. I asked him where to take the computers for ecological disposal and he offered to take care of it for me.” Sullivan also appreciates the fact that Reeves sells old monitors, cords and other items at reasonable prices. “I have fair prices and I treat people fairly,” Reeves says. “Once I get their business, I don’t think I’ve ever lost a customer.”

STEPPING DOWN Writer / Andrew Toy Photographer / Armando Garza
“I’m going to go around the room and ask each of you what you want to be when you grow up.” Like in any preschool class, the answers to the teacher’s question varied among the children - an astronaut, a veterinarian, a sheriff. When the teacher got to fouryear-old James Sebastian, his answer was different. He said, “I can’t tell you.” “Is everything all right, James?” she asked, a little perplexed. “I have to tell my mom first,” he responded. True to his word, he came home and told his mom, Mable, what he wanted to be. He received her blessing, and reported to his mom after school the next day that his teacher said she had no doubt in him. Mable knew as well as anyone that fireman

Yet, I’m very proud of him for what he’s done and what he’s accomplished.” Fire Department Station 1. Sebastian says the gratitude and happiness he feels for the opportunity to serve Jeffersontown is foremost in his mind.
Though Sebastian couldn’t always put his family first, sometimes missing his daughter’s tee-ball games or Christmas celebrations, his family always told him to try and push himself as hard as he could.
“On a scale of one to 10, he was a 15,” says Tom Ruckriegel, a retired fireman who worked “Be a perfectionist at your current job, with both Sebastian and his grandfather. and then the next position will become Sebastian got emotionally involved with the available,” he says, by way of advice to rookie firefighters. “That usually means that victims of accidents and horrific tragedies. if you’re a good firefighter, you’re going to be “He would comfort them, and made them a pretty decent sergeant, and so on. Firefighting wasn’t his only accomplishment at Station 1. It’s important to rewind the video footage and look back at the grainy film of 1987, when Sebastian was working as an electrician and volunteering as a fireman. The electrician gig served him well as he learned about building construction, electrical services, and sometimes even the causes of fires. From there he made the switch to full-time for the Jeffersontown Fire Department, as firefighting and worked his way steadily through the ranks, from firefighter to engineer, well as a certificate of need for advanced ambulance services for the community. lieutenant, captain, and finally deputy chief. His accomplishments didn’t stop there, however. Sebastian served the Local Emergency Planning Committee, as a board member on the Jeffersontown Fire Department as a firefighter representative, and as a board member for the Honor Flight Kentucky organization. He played a big role in successfully obtaining an Insurance Service Office Class 1 Rating
During his career Sebastian also implemented a successful evaluation of district resources such as stations and firefighting equipment. He helped reduce district expenses related to maintenance and supplies. He established stronger communication between the board of trustees, command staff, community leaders and firefighters. Sebastian also created and implemented standard operating
procedures, a handbook, medical protocols and a ride-up training program. For his retirement party, the department gave him an ax, which symbolizes strength. It is also one of the first tools that a firefighter grabs before heading into peril. He was also given a helmet and a box containing all of his badges. Mayor Bill Dieruf was present at the ceremony, and spoke about Sebastian’s accomplishments and his service to the community. Sebastian says the things observed on the

job that happen to other people, including loss of life, are often very difficult to deal with. Nevertheless, he is quick to flip to the other side of the coin. “There is just as much, and maybe even more, of the good stuff that’s happened too,” he says. “When you help a family get out of a situation, or help them find some resources to find another place to live, or deal with a death, there is plenty of the good stuff that also happens - but sometimes it’s the bad stuff that sits in your head.” After 33 years of work, Sebastian has nothing but good things to say about his community and the fire department that resides there. “I think that Jeffersontown is the best department out there,” he says. “I love the people I work with. I think they’re the best in the business. I believe it’s never one person that makes or breaks an organization. The reason I got to where I am, or where I did get, is because of the assistance of other people who made my job easier. It wasn’t always just me. It was sometimes a combination of people who helped me achieve what I got. I think the organization is going to do great with the personnel that is there.” As for how he’s going to spend his retirement, the question evokes a smile. “I’ve got a lot of make-up to do with my family,” he says “My goal is to spend time with my family and enjoy being with them. I’ve got two grandkids that I love dearly that are everything to me. To me, that’s retirement.” He vows that he’s not done working in some capacity. “I’m going to do something else - I don’t know what,” Sebastian says. “I do have a lot of payback I’ve got to do for my family, for all the things that they’ve had to deal with in my 26 years of paid service, and 33 years as a whole.” Rest well, Deputy Chief Sebastian. From all of us here in Jeffersontown, we’re grateful to you and your family for your dedication and service. 36 / JEFFERSONTOWN MAGAZINE / OCTOBER 2020 / JeffersontownMag.com

If you’re considering putting on a new roof or repairing an existing one, consider this. Bone Dry is the name many homeowners think of as the gold standard in roofing. More compliments and fewer complaints than anyone. So don’t just have someone throw on some shingles. Turn to the company that hung it’s shingle out over 30 years ago.
