When David Dale first moved to Southeast Asia 15 years ago, he didn’t know he would find his life’s calling, but that’s exactly what happened. He initially worked for an agriculture company that promoted soybeans. Over time, however, he learned all about the farming community and the plight that upland farmers faced. Unlike the wealthier farmers who planted rice, soybeans and other crops in the lowlands, upland farmers plant their crops on the mountainside. The purpose of any JROTC program is “to instill in students in [the United States] secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, and personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.”

Living in North Carolina in the 1970s, Ebert was on the track to retirement and wondering where his next adventure would be. An old friend, Col. H.J. Huntzinger, approached Capt. Ebert and asked if he would like to join him in starting a JRTOC Program in Jeffersontown, KY. “We being marines, we were used to taking new jobs,” Capt. Ebert says. “I figured I could go up and try it out, and if I decided it wasn’t for me, I could go someplace else.” At that time, the Jeffersontown High School had only been operating for a few years. Col. Hunzinger and Capt. Ebert traveled from North Carolina and spent the weekend exploring and learning about the Jeffersontown community and the school. “The principal had been a marine in WWII, so they were looking forward to having

a [JRTOC] program. Everything went as planned, so we decided to take the job in the summer of 1971,” Capt. Ebert says. The program needed 50 cadets to enroll to be a successful start. By the first football game, Capt. Ebert had all 50 cadets trained and dressed in uniform performing the Color Guard that evening. “As the program grew, we had a rifle team, a drill team, color guard and a flag program,” Capt. Ebert says. “The program got continuous exposure through competitions and through the community.” By the second year, they had more than 100 cadets. But it was much more than just numbers for Ebert. The feedback he received from teachers and parents was more than encouraging. “The teachers noticed the change in discipline, and then the parents would come in and say they couldn’t believe how much

we’d accomplished in the short time we had the kids,” Capt. Ebert says. “They were saying ‘yes, ma’am’ and ‘no, sir’ at the dinner table and being respectful. It was a great feeling to know the program made such a difference in these kids’ lives.” Now, many years later, Capt. Ebert still stays in contact with several students and mentors the ones who are on their way to graduation and the next chapter in their lives. “Many of the kids stayed in contact with me through the years,” Capt. Ebert says. “They will call and tell me the program taught them so much about leadership. Even the ones who did not go on to join the service tell me what an impact it made on their lives. I am grateful for that.” Currently, Capt. Ebert is retired and living in the community. He still serves as a mentor for JROTC High School students in the area.

RING, RING! A HISTORY OF TELEPHONES IN JEFFERSONTOWN In this day and age, practically everyone owns a cell phone. In fact, most people would probably find it hard to function if that little piece of technology was not within their grasp. From the moment it was invented, the telephone became indispensable to our society — a “lifeline” that connected people who could not be together in person and gave them a feeling of security, knowing others were literally just a phone call away.

The first telephone exchange in Jeffersontown was operated in a back room of the Groves Building, which once stood at the corner of Watterson Trail and Taylorsville Road in the space now occupied by King Southern Bank. It was run by the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company, and Miss Jessie Gray was one of the first phone operators to work from the “hello” station there. When she resigned in February 1909, after 3 and a half years of service, The Jeffersonian newspaper noted her professionalism and pleasant attitude in dealing with irate people.

Although the first practical telephone was invented in the 1870s, Jeffersontown had no phone service until 1904. In August of that year, phone lines were run down Taylorsville Road from Louisville. It would be another eight years before electricity made its way to Jeffersontown.

In the newly-formed telephone business, young men originally served as operators but that changed rather quickly due to complaints about their “rudeness and filthy language.” The Bell Company encouraged the hiring of women, as they could be paid less and had more patience than men. Only

single women were allowed to be hired — once a woman married, she had to leave the company. That proved true in Jeffersontown as well as the rest of the country, since at least two local operators resigned their posts to marry their managers. Both of those girls were Hokes — five of the sisters from that family served as phone operators in Jeffersontown, the youngest of whom ended up working more than 35 years for the phone company. As was noted above, The Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company was the first to serve Jeffersontown. A few years later, The Citizens Telephone Company and the Home Company from Fern Creek offered their services for “long distance” — which at the time simply meant the ability to call people outside the Jeffersontown area, who were not also Cumberland subscribers. As always seems to be the case, no company

provided comprehensive service, and the rates of the various companies were rather convoluted and prone to being raised on a regular basis. Of course, for people unwilling to pay higher individual rates, that meant sharing a party line. Residents could pay for a 2-party, 3-party, 4-party, or rural party line (5 or more), which meant that the line was shared with that many other residences. Each home on that line received a designated number of rings, so if the phone rang, all the houses on that line had to wait and figure out how many times the phone would ring, then the one with that designated number would pick up. At least, that was the ideal – usually any or all of the residents on that line could pick up and listen in on calls – and they did. People who shared the line were notorious for talking too long, preventing other calls from getting through, and not allowing others to make their own calls. By the 1940s, Southern Bell Telephone

and Telegraph Company provided service to the Jeffersontown area. In 1941, Jeffersontown converted to a Dial System, so individuals could dial the number of whomever they wished to call, without the help of an operator. This benefitted the town, as in 1947, there was a strike by the phone company that left most communities without the services of an operator to connect their calls. The 1940s also saw the advent of outdoor telephone booths. During World War II, the service was needed for Army bases, defense projects, and housing units. Phone booths did not become generally available for public use until 1951. One used to stand on the town square in front of the old Jeffersontown Fire Department that was located where the Jeffersontown Chamber of Commerce is now. An outdoor phone booth similar to the one that stood on the town square is currently on display in the Jeffersontown Historical Museum, and it produces a great deal of wonder and

enthusiasm — especially from children who have never seen such a thing. Even “dial” telephones amaze and confound the little ones, who just cannot understand the purpose or logistics of using a rotary dial. Ever since the telephone came to Jeffersontown, the number of people who wanted service steadily increased. In 1955, E.C. Ries, suburban manager for Southern Bell, noted that there were 1,588 telephones serving Jeffersontown, up from 1,454 the previous year. He pointed out that “telephone growth could be used as a barometer of over-all local progress” and added that he was “proud that Southern Bell could be an integral part of the forward movement of Jeffersontown.” By the 1950s, phone numbers had increased from the original two digits plus a ring number, to four-digit numbers. In 1957, a new means of assigning phone numbers came into being – from that point on, numbers in each area of the county would contain a call letter and a numerical prefix, plus four digits (most customers would get to keep the four digits they were already using). Jeffersontown received the designation ANdrews 7 – or 267, the common prefix known throughout the town before the use of cellular phones became prevalent. In 1961, the area went to “all number calling” and did away with prefixes like ANdrews. According to the July 24, 1969, VoiceJeffersonian newspaper, “some people at the time were not sure of the ease in which they could dial an all numeral telephone number.” Interestingly, the same article, which touted the growth of the phone company and the importance of phones, posited the following questions and statements in the final paragraph: “What about the next 20 years? What will technology add to suburban progress? Well, there will be many new ways of communicating. The picture phone service may be the most common means of communication. Then you will have face to face communications across our continent and over oceans without being there.” It took a little longer than 20 years, but they seemed to know what they were talking about. 12 / JEFFERSONTOWN MAGAZINE / DECEMBER 2019 / JeffersontownMag.com

With the holidays upon us, our thoughts turn towards readying for the days ahead which includes gift shopping, decorating our homes and other preparations. Prospect residents Jay Kluckhohn and his wife Amanda Spalding are really no different from the rest of us when it comes to prepping for the season, yet, they have a unique talent — one that our readers need to keep close to the vest. Here’s the scoop: Jay and Amanda are Santa and Mrs. Claus. OK, so they may not be the ‘actual’ St. Nick and his dear wife, but they certainly play the parts quite well. Jay is a tall, robust, jovial man with rosy red cheeks and a head full of snowy-white hair and a beard to match. In

‘real life’ he is an aircraft mechanic inspector for UPS. Amanda has a kind, nurturing spirit about her, a sweet voice, a warm smile and a twinkle in her eye. In her real life, she is a nurse and Medicare claims review manager for Humana. So how in the world did these two make the decision to portray Santa and Mrs. Claus? Jay and Amanda first met on a blind date set up by a mutual friend, and it all worked out, for they have been married for 16 years. Generally, new couples will discuss their past, their work, hobbies and interests, but Jay wasn’t reluctant about telling Amanda about his desire to be Kris Kringle. “I’d been growing my beard for some time, and I told her that I felt like Santa Claus and I thought that I’d be a good Santa,” he says. DECEMBER 2019

Jay’s friend at work, who was portraying Santa at the time, told Jay that he could see him in that role as well. Nothing came of it at first, but three years later a chance meeting with another Louisville Santa convinced Jay to begin pursuing his passion. “In January of 2017, Amanda and I walked into the Oxmoor Center and saw a man wearing a red coat and red hat, with this magnificent straight white beard that was combed out and styled,” Jay says. “That should have been a hint as to who he was. We walked up to him and after talking, he told me that I would make a good Santa. He suggested we get together some time.” This man turned out to be Walt Queen, a very well-known Santa in Louisville.

A few weeks later, the three met up again along with another man who portrays Santa. While they were talking, a little girl seated nearby continued to look at Santa Walt. “She just kept looking and looking at him,” Amanda says. “And Walt just turned it on, and this little girl came up to him and just snuggled up and started talking to him about how she just loved what he brought her for Christmas. It was so magical to see Santa come to life in front of your eyes.” That did it for Jay. He joined the Kentucky-based Bluegrass Santas, and he and Amanda attended the International Santa Celebration hosted by the International Brotherhood of Real Bearded Santas (IBRBS) in Denver, Colorado in 2018. According to Jay, it was a life-changing experience.

“All these men — black, white, Hispanic, Norwegian, short or tall — it was incredible,” he says. “None them of argued. None of them were fighting for left-right principals. None of them were yelling in disgust. They were all strangers to each other, but at the same time they were all together, and they were all friends. They literally impressed me up one side and down the other. Even the guys selling Santa stuff in the back room were impressive. We have greatly enjoyed the camaraderie and fellowship of the Bluegrass Santas and the IBRBS.” As for Amanda, she was a little hesitant, initially, when it came to diving into the persona of Mrs. Claus. “I was 54, and the one thing I was struggling with is that I didn’t want to be frumpy,” she says. “I was just going to be Santa’s handler, his manager. I was going to be the person in the back of the room with the smart headset on whispering kids’ names to him. But, I loved all of the Santas and Mrs. Clauses I’d met at the Celebration in Denver, and I started getting into it a little bit more. The Mrs. Clauses there said I

needed to attend an event called the Santa Nana Holiday University held in Columbus, Ohio. So I did, and that’s where I ‘found’ my Mrs. Claus.” One of the exercises the ladies had to do was tell a story about being Mrs. Claus. “My story was about how I met Santa,” Amanda recounts. “The story goes like this: One day I was eating lunch outside, sitting on a bench, and this bearded man came by and he asked if he could sit down and eat with me and I said yes. When I looked up at him I saw fairies and sparkles all around him, and I could hear bells. He sat down and as we ate, I kept looking at him all the while. Finally, he asked, ‘Why are you staring at me like that?’ and I answered, ‘Well, you have fairies and sparkles, and you’re just radiating magic!’ Santa then looked at me and exclaimed, ‘You’re the one! You can see the magic!’” The ladies simply loved her story and

Amanda admits it gave her goosebumps as she was telling it. Amanda also experienced another epiphany while at the University. She wanted to have her picture taken by the professional photographer on hand, but

she had nothing ‘Claus-like’ to wear. “One of the ladies lent me an outfit which had a gorgeous red wool cape and a big white fur hat,” she says. “I put them on, looked at myself in the mirror and I thought, ‘Oh, my gosh, I am Mrs. Claus!’”

When asked what kind of joy they receive from portraying the most famous couple from the North Pole, Jay says, “It has been the most remarkable, rewarding type of work you can do. It must be like what a priest goes through. The children respond to you positively. The adults respond to you positively. It’s not you making believe — you are Santa for the period of time that you’re in front of the children.” Amanda loves it because of the magic their characters bring to the families. “Seeing their eyes light up and watching them interact with Jay, it’s just wonderful,” she says. Jay and Amanda say they’d like to build this into a business and have enough income to do home visits for children and families who can’t afford to pay for a Santa. They would like to make hospital visits and work with the Shriners.

“We don’t want to get rich off of this, we want to give back to the community,” Jay says. Last year was the first year for Jay and Amanda to appear in public. This year, their appearances included a visit to the Eastern High School Band Holiday Boutique in November, plus they’ll be at Kiddie Kastle Children’s Furniture Store, and Wild Eggs in Westport Village, along with a few other spots around the Louisville area. It’s easy to see why they both simply love playing Santa and Mrs. Claus. “It’s all about building your own North Pole,” Amanda says. “You’ve got to come with all of your backstories, and how you’re going to answer questions ahead of time. You’ve got to think of all of the things the children are going to ask you, and you need to know your backstory so well that you can answer as Santa.”

Aerus Electrolux manufactures and distributes a number of Healthy Home products, including systems for air purification, floor care and central vacuum. The powerful but quiet central vacuum systems, which can cover up to 10,000 sq. ft., are low-maintenance and greatly improve air quality in the home. Dan Welker, who has been in the business for more than three decades, purchased the Aerus Electrolux franchise 16 years ago. Welker is proud of the five-star rating the company has received on Home Advisor because he prides himself on providing excellent customer service. For instance, customers have referred to Welker as “extremely professional, knowledgeable and down-home friendly.” Welker recognizes that people appreciate the little things — like that he takes his shoes off when he enters their home and that he takes the time to properly explain things. “It had to be something that would fetch a high enough price on the market that would make it worth our while as well as worth the while of the farmers to plant and sell it to us,” Dale says.

“We came along and that was the piece of the puzzle that was missing,” Dale says. “Not only could we provide them with the crop and technological expertise to successfully cultivate, plant and harvest that crop, but we could also provide them with the market to sell it.”

the day, Laos was known as one of the countries in the Golden Triangle (the area where the borders of Thailand, Burma, and Laos come together) and was the leading region from where opium was sourced. The mountainsides were covered in opium poppy. Then in the early 2000s, Laos joined the international community and the government carried out a program to eliminate poppy cultivation. Opium plots were cut down, but the farmers were never given sustainable cash crops. “That kind of poverty led these upland peoples to all sorts of problems, including sickness and human trafficking of young girls,” says Dale, who knew that by increasing people’s economic situation, vulnerability to human trafficking would be alleviated. He set out to do that with coffee. Dale admits that his plan did not go smoothly at first. For one thing, he and his Lao employees were seen as outsiders to the upland farmers. They didn’t trust the suggestion of planting this new crop. Dale understood their apprehension. After all, coffee wasn’t an established crop or livelihood in northern Laos. “People who are in poverty are very risk adverse because they can’t afford to take a chance and fail,” Dale says. “It was difficult to get them to try something they had never done before.” Ultimately, Dale made believers out of everybody, and in the end, prior to moving to Louisville in 2016, he promoted coffee cultivation to more than 800 families and

20 different villages in the province of Luang Prabang. “It wasn’t a silver bullet,” Dale says. “It takes time, but it can definitely help the farmers to begin the climb out of poverty.” When Dale and his wife, Tou, and their children Elijah, Hannah and Jonah left Laos, they didn’t shut everything down (they had opened two coffee shops in Laos while there). “We were involved with coffee production all the way from planting the seeds and growing the trees through harvest processing, roasting and then with our coffee shops actually grinding, brewing and serving cups of coffee and espresso,” Dale says.

According to Dale, Luang Prabang is the number one tourist destination in the country of Laos because it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. “A half a million tourists go through there every year,” Dale says. “That’s one way our coffee shop is able to help — because we sell to expatriate communities as well as tourists.”

“There are a lot of ‘do-good’ coffees out there, but some of them don’t taste very good,” Dale says. “I want people to buy our coffee because it tastes great and then it’s gravy to know that this is supporting some of the most disadvantaged people in the world.” Dale sells eight different coffees, all of them single origins except for their blend which is an espresso blend — a medium roast. He notes that a common coffee myth exists that says an espresso roast needs to be really dark. “That’s only true if the coffee is bad, but if you have good beans, you don’t have to roast them so dark, even for an espresso,” Dale says. “People are surprised when they see that our espresso blend is not dark roasted, but that’s probably our most popular one.”

“People get excited about coffee,” he says. “I think it connects to the romantic tendencies in people because it’s a naturally interesting subject,” says Dale, who is pleased by the doors his business has opened to the community.

Sock donations are always welcomed and a great way to give to local shelters. There are plenty of kids who might not have a very magical holiday without donations, so look for local children’s centers and groups where you can adopt a child for the holidays by fulfilling their wish list anonymously. Giving doesn’t have to be done in monstrous ways, you can just grab an item off the donation tree at work, buy a preloaded bag of groceries at the store or even buy the coffee for the person behind you in line at your favorite coffee shop! Often times, it’s the littlest things that make the biggest difference. Not only do you feel good doing it, you know you are making someone else’s day too.

There’s something about driving around on streets lined with lighted trees that transports most to a happy and carefree place! There’s something about the twinkling lights backed by the darkness that makes you feel like you are in a magical wonderland. And if there’s snow, the lights take on an even more magical effect. Paul Erway is co-founder of 50 Abilities Marathons, a group of wheelchair marathoners who also speak at rehab centers to “get patients going” to try adaptive sports. But also to the therapists to let them know how important their role is in the recovery of patients. The group, Erway and his friends Grant Berthiaume and Aaron Roux, set an initial goal to run in 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 weeks.

later hit by a truck in his racing wheelchair in 2006. He was inspired by the late actor Christopher Reeve and wanting to help his Foundation, and by the people and research at Frazier Rehab in Louisville. Erway was an equestrian, like Reeve, and had been doing horse shows since age 11.

The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation funds research to help spinal cord injury patients through grants and advocacy, to improve quality of life. The Foundation is named for the late actor and producer and his wife. Reeve was paralyzed Erway was injured in two separate accidents, after a horseback riding accident in 1995, the first being a car wreck in 1980, the and used a wheelchair for nine years, before weekend of college graduation when he he passed away in 2005. Erway was told he had great stories and that he should write a book, so he attended a workshop by Cathy Fyock, author of “On Your Mark: From First Word to First Draft in 6 Weeks.” He ended up with enough material for two books! His first book, “50 Abilities, Unlimited Possibilities,” covers his first 14 marathons toward his goal of 50, up to the Boston Marathon in 2013. His second book, covering the remaining marathons, came out this past July. The first book covers the team’s first marathon toward their goal in Jackson in January 2013, the Mississippi Blues Marathon. There are also marathons in Houston, Phoenix, Miami, Myrtle Beach,

Birmingham, New Orleans, Albany (Georgia), Little Rock, Los Angeles, Cape May (New Jersey), Knoxville, and Adeline (Kansas). Each chapter of the book describes one marathon and also includes “Behind The Scenes” stories of people that Erway and his friends meet. “I didn’t go to win but to complete each marathon and had so many great experiences I wouldn’t have had,” he says. “Having a series of goals gave drive to come back, asking what can I do, what else can I do, and wrote a book in the process.” The idea began as a way to bring awareness and to raise money for Team Reeve. Erway and his friend Grant Berthiaume had just completed the Oita, Japan marathon, considered the best event in the world for wheelchair racers, as there are only wheelchair racers and no runners, and thought “what next?”

Erway began competing in wheelchair racing in regionals and went to the world championships in Assen, Holland in 1990. His mentor Marty Ball, a member of the Wheelchair Sports Hall of Fame, recommended the Boston Marathon, considered the greatest race in the US, and he completed it three times. It remains special to him because he qualified for it the first time after he learned he had not qualified for Paralympics, and he wanted to give up racing. Ball suggested he try Boston first. There are marathon runners “50 state” clubs, but the group became the first wheelchair racers to do so. The team then came up with the goal of 50 marathons and began after two years of planning and finding sponsors. Another goal was to visit hospitals and rehab facilities in each city they traveled to, to raise awareness and encourage participation in wheelchair sports. They spoke at Touro Rehabilitation Center,

The team even met some notable friends — descendants of President Eisenhower in Kansas, the president of Saucony Shoes on a plane and a college friend of Christopher’s daughter Alexandra Reeve on a bus to a race. The team also took time to enjoy some great food and sightseeing, like fresh seafood in New Jersey and beignets at Café du Monde in New Orleans. Erway also recommends “Abilities Expo” a traveling exhibit with workshops and demos of wheelchair sports, which the group attended in LA. Of course, the Boston Marathon in 2013 ends up being an unforgettable experience for Erway. He left the race and took a cab to the airport right away. The gate attendant announced he was the first marathon finisher to board. Only after the plane landed did he learn there had been a bomb at the finish line. The experience left him saddened, but inspired by the “Boston Strong” resiliency of the city and its people, and determined to continue his races.

In addition to his busy marathon schedule, Erway also works as a marketing representative for Superior Van & Mobility in Jeffersontown. He has been with the company for more than 20 years. They have been very supportive of his “50 Abilities” goal, even helping sponsor hotel and food costs for the team in the five states where they have locations. He credits the company’s success to their giving nature: “The more people you can help, the more you’ll be blessed.”

Erway’s family has also been very supportive of his travels. He grew up in Pennsylvania as one of eight siblings. He came to Louisville for work and has a brother living in Lexington. His father is 90 years old, and he stated he gets his “perseverance” from him. He credited his wife Barbara also with looking after their “four-legged children” – six dogs – while he is away. Of his books, he says “I don’t think I am a great writer, but I have a story to tell.”

MOREL The Common Morel is often associated with elm, sycamore, hickory, poplar and ash tree root systems.â&#x20AC;Ż Morels can be found during the spring season, just after night temperatures remain above 50 degrees for several days and adequate moisture is available. You can find Morel hiding in the Big Beech Woods in Pope Lick Park, from late March through early May.

SHAGGY MANE Shaggy Mane is often seen growing in lawns from roots or woody material under the soil. On your next adventure through the forests of Broad Run Park, in the late spring through summer, you might come across one of these peculiar mushrooms.

BOLETE Bolete is often found around oaks in late June through August. These mushrooms are defined as any ground fruiting fungi with a stem that does not have gills. Boletes have tubular pores, which release spores, and can be found decorating the ground along Trestle Point in Pope Lick Park.

CHANTERELLES Chanterelles pop up in the summer, 2-3 days after a significant rainfall. This fungus species has gills and exudes a milky “sap” when cut or damaged. You can often spot them around oak trees throughout Turkey Run Forest and The Strand.

CHICKEN OF THE WOODS Chicken of the Woods is often found on decaying oak trees during late summer and early fall. You may come across these fungi while exploring areas such as Trestle Point in Pope Lick Park, The Strand and in the forests of Turkey Run Park.

Although some mushrooms found in grocery stores may be tasty, please remember not to ingest wild mushrooms found in nature. However, it’s pretty neat to be able to walk along a trail in The Parklands and identify mushrooms you may pass.
