Upon leaving Spring Hill in the early 1970s, Weber set out to prove that she can be successful, and began working with the Jefferson County government (before the merger with the City of Louisville), first as secretary to Judge Todd Hollenbach and eventually working toward administrative assistant. She had the privilege of working for Hollenbach during his entire administration. When asked what she feels was part of her success in this position, Weber responds with a smile. “I was a really fast typist,” she says.
ROAD TO SUCCESS VICKY WEBER REFLECTS ON PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS
Upon leaving Hollenbach’s office, Weber had a brief stint working with Mitch McConnell’s administration, but quickly moved to a position as a management assistant for Sylvia Watson, who was the first female elected as an A District commissioner in Jefferson County, and also for Earl Hartlage, the C District commissioner.

Having the desire to help others, she happily accepted in 2008 and worked with the organization as senior vice president of communications until her retirement. As one might guess, Weber is the type of person who doesn’t sit around for too long. Involvement has always been a key need and fixture in her life, both professionally and socially. Through her work and contacts with Kosair Charities, she was approached about serving on the board of Gilda’s Club Kentuckiana. Our board sponsored a Green Light giveaway, prompted by a suggestion made by Governor Andy Beshear, to turn a green porch light on as a sign of compassion and support for all of us, reminding each person that we will get through this together. We gave away hundreds of those bulbs.”

humanitarian efforts that Asher shared in so passionately.
Alumni Dinner, she was honored with the prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award.
Around 2014, Weber joined the board of the Spirit of Louisville Foundation, most commonly known as the WLKY Bell Awards. The foundation accepts hundreds of nominations for people and organizations who exemplify community service, and who go above and beyond to make the world a bit brighter. Weber became the chair in 2018.
While Weber has had her hand in doling out dozens of awards, she has been fortunate to win a few accolades for herself in recognition of her outstanding work in and around the Louisville community.
“Not only did I attend Assumption, but so did my daughter and daughter-in-law, and now I have a granddaughter there as well,” Weber says. “As you can tell, the school means a great deal to me.”
In 2016, Today’s Woman magazine recognized her as the Most Admired Woman in the Not-For-Profit category, while she was at Kosair Charities. In 2019, Women 4 Women honored Weber with the Heart of the Community Award.
Weber enjoys taking walks with her husband and spending time with her grandchildren. When asked what is next, she says a board position at her alma mater would be nice.
“For several hours our board will pour over the nominees and narrow it down, and then we whittle it down even farther and choose 10 adult winners and two high school students for the award,” Weber explains. “When John Asher passed away it was hard for all of us, as he was a light and a fixture of this foundation, so in his honor we created the John Asher Spirit Award.” The newly created award will be presented to a community leader who personifies the
While she has appreciated all of her successes and awards, there is one accolade that she holds very close to her heart. As a 1970 graduate of Assumption High School, Weber has noted that her education there made an impact on her road to success. In 2019, during the Salute to

Santa Spirit
LOCAL SANTAS EMBRACE THE HOLIDAY SEASON Writer / Julie Engelhardt Photography Provided
Did you know that we actually have Santas living right here in our neighborhoods? Yes, the spirit of Santa (or at least his helpers) is alive and well in Louisville. What inspires these men to take on this persona? What joy do they derive from dressing up in a red and white fur suit, listening to Christmas wishes shared by hundreds and hundreds of children? We’ll begin our story with Santa Michael (last name omitted) in La Grange. You might have seen him zipping around town in his little red car. He began his journey 10 years ago during a recuperation period after undergoing
shoulder surgery. He grew out a white beard during his downtime, which caught the eye of his Santa friend at church. “He asked me to cover for him one night, and I was hooked,” he says. He is originally from the west coast, having grown up in Orange County, California. That is where his earliest memories of seeing Santa stem from. “I remember getting our annual photo with Santa, but only from seeing the photos,” he explains. After he and his wife Laura, who portrays Mrs. Claus, were married, they would visit Disneyland each year for Christmas to visit Santa. “Disneyland really knows how to do DECEMBER 2021 / 11
Christmas,” he says. He’s had quite a busy schedule during the holiday season. He averages about 80 visits per season, but last year his appearances were down some due to the pandemic. “I do all events from preschools to senior citizens homes, corporate parties, fundraisers, light-up ceremonies, parades, the Polar Express experience, and visits with families,” he says. “I do ‘Light Up La Grange’ every year and always enjoy meeting all the kids from my hometown. I also do a Boys & Girls club event in Cincinnati that is wellhosted. It is always an amazing event.” Santa Pat Meehan, also known as the Derby City Kringle, has been appearing as the big man in red since 1979. He began his specific journey when he was
a natural-bearded Santa - he grew his own whiskers - in Colorado in 1955. My father was a designer-bearded Santa, using a prop beard affixed to his face, at the Louisville Central Park Santa Land in 1956. I visited my father but only recognized him after the visit.”

Meehan also keeps very busy visiting good girls and boys throughout the season. He’s been the Santa at Oxmoor Center for 23 years. He’s also appeared at the Louisville Free Public Library, ‘Light Up St. Matthews,’ 4th Street Live!, the Louisville Zoo, and the Lyndon Christmas celebration. “My 18-month-old grandson, who was staying at my home with his parents for a number of months, came to visit me at the mall,” he says. “He did not cry but he was afraid of me.” Tom Dobbins has been portraying Santa

Dobbins takes his Santa duties quite seriously as he is a member of several Santa organizations, including the Fraternal Order of Real Bearded Santas (FORBS) and International Brotherhood of Real Bearded Santas (IBRBS). “I’ve been to two FORBS conventions in California and two IBRBS conventions in Tampa and Denver, and I am going to the Atlanta one in April,” he says.

Comfort. Teamwork. Quality care. These are just a few words that describe the experience you’ll find as a patient at Uof L Health - Brown Cancer Center, and now it’s right in your neighborhood. Brown Cancer Center’s new location at Uof L Health - Medical Center Northeast brings all the advantages of the worldrenowned downtown location to northeastern Jefferson County. Now the quality, services and academic medicine provided by Uof L Health are closer to your home, located at 2401 Terra Crossing Boulevard. “Patients who had historically come downtown wanted to transition to Northeast since they lived out there,” says Beth Riley, M.D., a breast medical oncologist. “We started to see a lot of patients in the surrounding communities come as new patients. It ramped up very quickly, so much so that we’re adding physicians to add even more access.”
With the addition of the Brown Cancer Center services to the Medical Center Northeast location, it has become much easier for members of the Jeffersontown, Middletown, Westport and Crestwood communities to request a screening or receive treatment without having to make a trip downtown. Riley believes the convenient location of Medical Center Northeast is one of the reasons the facility has quickly blossomed.
Beth Riley, M.D.
“Oncology appointments, treatment, scans, echoes - all of that can be done at Medical Center Northeast,” Riley says. “I started out at Medical Center Northeast in October 2020, and my patients love the convenience.”
“My treatment philosophy is to try to ensure patients understand as much about their disease as I know about their disease,” Riley says. “That way we can make betterinformed treatment decisions together.”
At UofL Health - Brown Cancer Center’s northeast location you will also find the same high-quality providers who specialize in treating cancer in the way that’s best for each individual patient. Riley prefers to take an education-based approach with her patients.
One of our inspiring patients at Uof L Health - Brown Cancer Center is breast cancer survivor Melanie Beil. Beil explains that she was playing with her dog at home when she noticed an unusual lump. That is when she got it checked out and discovered she had developed metastatic breast cancer.
16 / DECEMBER 2021
After receiving this difficult news, Beil decided to come to the Brown Cancer Center for a second opinion, and she never looked back. “It was a very easy decision once I talked with the team,” Beil says. Shortly after her diagnosis, Beil began her treatment at the Brown Cancer Center,
signaling the start of her long journey. Beil explains that her treatments came in phases, within a series of different kinds that shrunk her cancer from 5.7 centimeters to 2 millimeters. After undergoing a double mastectomy and radiation treatments, Beil was deemed cancer-free. She has been in the clear for more than a year now, but she still must undergo a maintenance treatment regimen that lessens the chance of her

The services Beil and many other cancer patients have received are conveniently located off of Old Henry Road in east Louisville. and has a very positive perspective of the facility. “The facility is brand new, so it’s a very nice facility to have your treatment,” Beil says. Due to medical regulations during the pandemic, Beil was attending her appointments by herself. She appreciates her doctors at the Brown Cancer Center and shares that their compassion made her feel less alone.
“Dr. Riley and Dr. Ajkay would make sure to explain everything to me so that I would understand why we were doing what we’re doing, as well as why that was the best course of treatment for my cancer,” Beil says. Beil shares some powerful advice for others going through cancer treatments.
Not only does the Brown Cancer Center offer cutting-edge treatments for cancers, but it also offers a variety of services ranging from support groups to different therapies patients can utilize while on their cancer journey. Beil shares how a few of these services have impacted her personally. “I love the wrap-around services that the Brown Cancer Center provides,” Beil says. “It’s truly a holistic approach.” Some of the services that Beil utilized during her time spent with the Brown Cancer Center include partnering with a nutritionist and cognitive therapist, obtaining massages, and participating in art therapy. Beil wholeheartedly believes these services are another aspect of the cancer center that sets it apart from others in the region.
“Finding a team that you’re comfortable with is important,” Beil says. “You also must advocate for yourself. orphaned, displaced or injured.
Eileen and John Wicker
The center was started in the 1980s by John and Eileen Wicker. Eileen had been volunteering as a docent at the Louisville Zoo when she learned that their raptor program was in need of further assistance. She jumped on board and stayed for three years, formulating the idea of opening a place of her own to rehabilitate these special birds. “Our rehab center was something we could do on the weekends,” John Wicker says. “We worked out of our basement, our garage and our backyard.”

Our beautiful state is home to an abundance of spectacular wildlife on land, in the water and in the air. In good times, these creatures are well-equipped to care for themselves without a great deal of human intervention, but there are
This is when centers such as Raptor Rehabilitation of Kentucky, Inc. are extremely essential. It is a nonprofit, volunteer-run organization that tends to eagles, hawks, turkey vultures, owls and other birds of prey if they become sick, 20 / DECEMBER 2021
The permanent center began to take shape in 1992. It has remained the home base of operations since then. “The volunteers today have it good,” Wicker says. “When we first started, we had gravel floors, no heat, no water, and I had to run hoses from my house to the center.” Wicker, with the help of Facilities Manager
Tiffany Dicks and many volunteers, keeps the center going full time, day and night. Eileen is no longer with the operation as she passed away in February of 2020, but Wicker, Dicks and the volunteers keep her dedication and memory alive by caring for the raptors with the same kind of love and respect that she had for these majestic creatures. Dicks volunteered at the center for three years before being hired for her current position one year ago. Her duties and responsibilities are quite varied. “My job involves maintenance of the facility and enclosures, but the majority of my job involves bird care, from triage to making sure they’re getting a proper diet, to prescribing medication, to making sure they’re getting through the stages of rehabilitation and getting them ready for release,” she explains. “I’m responsible for every single bird here on the property.”
year. As of April of this year, the center housed about 60 birds, and when summer rolls around, they can have up to 150 birds in at one time. Annually, they often have 250 to 300 birds come in that need to be rehabilitated. The raptors are brought in for a number of reasons. They may be abandoned baby chicks whose parents can’t be located. They
may have been attacked by a dog, cat or other animal. They may have been caught in a trap, poisoned or shot. They might have flown through a plate glass window and may be trapped inside of a house. The birds first enter the center where they receive medical care. According to Wicker, at one time the center was lucky enough to have veterinarians who would volunteer

Wicker is very grateful to have Dicks on board. “She’s worked hard, she’s learned a lot, she’s studied a lot and she’s my right hand,” Wicker says. “I don’t know what I’d do without her.” The center currently has about 45 active volunteers. “They come in and do everything from cleaning hospital crates and carpets to scrubbing enclosures,” Dicks explains. “We’re a really clean facility and every single enclosure gets cleaned from top to bottom every other day.”

Although the ultimate goal is to release as many birds as possible into their natural habitat, there are those that aren’t able to make it back into the wild because of injuries or due to imprinting on humans. These birds are used as educational ambassadors, or they serve as foster parents for orphaned chicks. These include Spirit, a female bald eagle, Captain Jack and Calypso, North American kestrels, and Hagatha, a magnificent great horned owl.

TAKE YOUR HOLIDAY COOKIE TRADITIONS TO THE NEXT LEVEL Writer & Photographer / Abigail Hake
What is it about the holidays that just screams cookies? Can you imagine the holidays without thinking about all the different cookies out there at the same time? They go hand in hand. There’s no holiday without them. By the time you have gone to holiday parties, visited family, participated in a cookie swap, or just decided to leave some out for Santa, you’ve made your fair share and have probably eaten quite a few too. Making holiday cookies each year is a great family tradition for lots of people. Many people put this on their holiday or winter bucket lists. One of the best parts of this tradition is that if you do it as a family, you can watch the kids grow into their roles more and more each year. Traditions don’t have to be complicated. Actually, it’s better if some traditions are simple so
they can easily be replicated year after year. There are so many cookies out there to choose from that baking together each year can be exactly the same or completely different. The good news is that holiday cookies don’t have to be fancy. The best part about baking around the holidays is that the cookies are homemade and baked with love. That said, for the cookies to turn out good enough to share with friends and family without embarrassment, you do need the right supplies and recipes. Our favorite cookies to make around the holidays are classic, decorated sugar cookies. These are the perfect cookies to make with the kiddos because they are fairly simple and, obviously, sweet. Did you know that sugar cookies have been around since the mid 1700s? They are believed to have been created by

German Protestant settlers in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and were originally known as Nazareth cookies. We also like making chocolate chip cookies (which date back to 1938) and gingerbread cookies (which date back to Queen Elizabeth I during the 16th century), but it’s always fun to add in some new recipes. The holiday baking tradition continues this year as we will be in the kitchen taking on typical cutout sugar cookies, and trying some new ones like Santa’s trash cookies and holiday fudge. With so many easy sugar cookie recipes out there, here’s a different type of cookie recipe to try by yourself or with your loved ones. These Santa’s trash cookies have plenty of flavor to satisfy salty and sweet cravings. Can you really pass up cookies with potato chips in them?

SANTA’S TRASH COOKIES What you’ll need: • 14 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature • ½ cup granulated sugar • ½ cup brown sugar • 1 large egg • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon baking soda (make sure it’s not expired) • ¼ teaspoon salt • ⅓ cup crushed potato chips • ⅓ cup crushed pretzels • ½ cup mini white chocolate Reese’s Cups • ½ cup mini chocolate Reese’s Cups • ⅓ cup milk or semi-sweet chocolate chips • ½ cup M&M’s (I used red, green and blue) • ⅓ cup white chocolate chips • ¼ cup sprinkles of choice • Sprinkles of flaky sea salt for tops of cookies
First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Next, in a medium bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda and salt together until they are combined, then set aside. With a mixer, cream the butter and sugars together in a large bowl until light and fluffy, usually about one to three minutes. Once the mixture turns pale yellow and has a light fluffy texture, it’s done. Make sure to not over-cream the mixture. Then, beat in an egg until it’s combined. Next, add in the dry ingredients with the wet until they are combined. It will be very thick. After that’s combined, add in the pretzels, potato chips, M&M’s, Reese’s Cups, chocolate chips and sprinkles, and mix together gently.
Call us today for all your blinds, shades, draperies, plantation shutters and wallpaper needs.
Using a cookie scoop, scoop your dough balls onto your sheets with parchment paper and slightly press them down. Before putting into the oven, sprinkle lightly with sea salt. If you’d like, you can add additional pretzels, chips, candies and sprinkles to the tops of the cookies for a little extra pizzazz. If you prefer the cookies to be thicker, don’t press down as much. Bake until the edges are just starting to get golden, usually about seven to eight minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool two to three minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely. Happy holidays from our kitchen to yours!

Understanding CBD Products Writer / Dee Dee Taylor, Owner of 502 Hemp Photography Provided
WHAT IS CBD?
CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol, one of the cannabinoids found in the hemp plant. There are more than 113 known cannabinoids that have medicinal properties. The known properties include pain relief, anxiety reduction, reduced inflammation, nerve protection and more.
HOW COULD CBD PRODUCTS IMPACT YOUR HEALTH?
Your body has an endocannabinoid system (ECS). When cannabinoids, via CBD products, enter the body they interact or “plug into” your ECS. From there, your ECS uses cannabinoids for what your body needs in order to reach homeostasis. If anxiety needs to be addressed, cannabinoids working through the ECS can calm nerves and trigger relaxing biological chemicals in the brain. If pain is an issue, CBD can work with the ECS to calm nerves, reduce inflammation and relieve pain. CBD topicals can work with the peripheral nervous system and ECS through the skin the same way. Cannabinoids in the ECS can adapt to your needs naturally with little to no side effects.
DOES IT MATTER WHERE YOU PURCHASE CBD?
Yes. Not all CBD products are created equal. It’s important to know how the plant is grown, how and where it is extracted, and how it is tested. The hemp industry is still new and there aren’t many rules and regulations enforced. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has some standard rules in the food and dietary supplement manufacturing realm that should be applied to hemp. These include growing hemp organically, using a safe extraction method like carbon dioxide, and testing the hemp for heavy metals and other harmful containments. It’s important that the label matches the milligrams on the bottle. The manufacturer or processor should also be audit certified via the Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations enforced by the FDA. This means the facility’s level of cleanliness is above and beyond someone extracting hemp out of their kitchen or barn, and they must keep accurate records of batches and testing samples. There should be a batch number and a certificate of analysis to go along with the bottle you are purchasing. Most companies use a QR code, so you can scan that code and see the test results of the certificate of analysis, usually found on the website. CBD is considered a health food supplement and should be purchased from a respectable and trusted source. Not all online companies are selling quality products. Quality matters when purchasing CBD products. DECEMBER 2021 / 29
DOES HAVING THE ORGANIC SEAL MAKE A CBD PRODUCT BETTER?
No, the organic seal costs the farmers and manufactures more money. You can tell the hemp is grown organically by the certificate of analysis. You don’t need to pay more money for the organic sticker.
IS IT WORTHWHILE TO BUY LOCALLY?
Buying locally made products is better for the local economy, better for local farmers, and better for local processors. Why support another state’s hemp industry when you can keep your purchase local and support Kentucky’s industry?
IS THERE MORE TO KNOW ABOUT CBD? Absolutely. There are a variety of options and products to choose from. CBD doesn’t just come in an oil. There are capsules, gummies, topicals, edibles and more. There are even different milligram amounts per bottle. One size or serving doesn’t fit all. It’s all about finding the best product for your needs and reaching out to a specialist or expert in the industry for trusted advice. Don’t settle and don’t be taken advantage of by misleading marketing ads or dishonest companies. CBD is an amazing product that can help if it is of high quality. Know your source and know your product. Quality truly matters when buying CBD products.

programs for Olympic athletes, in which sports psychologists played a prominent role.
SCIENCE RULES
In addition to providing the impetus for application of psychology to sport, the Olympic games also provided a fertile testing ground for some of the claims of the fledgling field of sport psychology. At the 1984 Olympic games, Terry Orlick and John Partington conducted a study of 235 Canadian athletes to explore the relative impact of mental, physical and technical preparation. Their research article, which concluded that only mental preparation showed any statistically significant correlation with final Olympic standing, was instrumental in putting applied sport psychology on the map. The next two decades witnessed a
proliferation of university departments, research laboratories, graduate programs, and peer-reviewed journals devoted specifically to the study of sport psychology, in an attempt to expand the field’s theoretical and applied knowledge base. My own dissertation research, for example, was a comprehensive review of three decades of research literature related to performance under pressure. It is difficult to argue with the evidence, as they say, and the evidence has overwhelmingly demonstrated the benefits of mental training for performance.
THE COOL KIDS
Despite its growing scientific foundation, the sport psychology movement was slow to infiltrate the world of professional and collegiate sports, largely due to the collective distrust of “head shrinks” and bias toward seeing psychology as something reserved for the mentally disturbed. In the 1990s, the credibility of sport psychology received a huge boost from
several high-profile coaches including Phil Jackson and Pete Carroll, and athletes like Michael Jordan and Greg Maddux, who were outspoken about the role of sport psychology in their own successes.
GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS
The next phase in the mental training revolution involved the growing recognition that one need not be an elite athlete to benefit from the principles of sport The impact of testimony from successful coaches and athletes in reducing the stigma psychology, which was rebranded as sport and performance psychology. momentum, and organizational consultants are increasingly using principles of sport psychology to help business leaders prioritize effectively, motivate and empower others, and make influential decisions under multiple and often conflicting pressures. Because high-ranking executives often have both the drive and financial resources to employ a personal coach, executive coaching has become one of the most popular and lucrative domains of mental performance consulting.
SUMMING UP
The meteoric rise of applied sport and performance psychology is the result of a confluence of factors including competitive spirit, scientific inquiry and vicarious
learning. Despite being met initially with intense skepticism, the field has overcome enormous odds to reach its current state of flourishing - but the revolution is far from over. Questions still remain regarding the standardization of training and credentialing in this burgeoning field. However, suffice it to say that, at this point, the secret is out. Mental preparation is an indispensable part of a modern, comprehensive approach to enhancing performance. We have reached the point where mental training can no longer be considered supplemental or optional. Coaches and business leaders who ignore this aspect of training do so at the risk of putting their teams and organizations at a
real disadvantage when going up against more mentally prepared competitors. It is also becoming increasingly clear that mental training is not only for those who are mentally broken, but rather for anyone who stands to benefit from cultivating mental habits, attitudes and skills that enhance one’s ability to regulate their attention and emotions - namely, everyone. Mental training is not only an essential component of elite performance training alongside the physical and technical aspects, but simply part of a well-balanced approach to health and wellness for all of us. With you in the pursuit, Dr. Dave

A Tiny Piece of History
Writer / Beth Wilder, Director Jeffersontown Museum
Many years ago, a child’s shoe was donated to the Jeffersontown Museum. It was a little girl’s slipper made of worn black leather, with an ankle strap and a frayed cloth bow. The interior lining was coming apart, and stuffed inside the toe of the shoe was a faded handwritten note: “Shoe of Ethel Beach Sprowl worn at 9 months when picture was taken, after recovering from Brain fever.” These words conjure up an image frightening at any time, but especially in the late 1800s when medical knowledge was not as advanced as it is today. At that time, effective treatment was not available for brain fever, which we now know as bacterial meningitis. Even in the early 1900s, between 69 and 90 percent of cases were fatal – with still higher fatality rates among children than adults – and in the spring of 1890, newborn Ethel Sprowl was at death’s
door, having contracted the deadly disease. Sadly enough, that was not an uncommon occurrence at the time. Sadder still is the fact that little Ethel’s own mother, Sadie Owings Sprowl, died of blood poisoning just seventeen days after giving birth to her on November 30, 1889, leaving Ethel in the care of her grief-stricken father, E.R. Sprowl (for whom Sprowl Road in Jeffersontown is named). E.R. tried his best to raise Ethel on his own, living in an apartment above Wells Drug Store on the Ethel Beach Sprowl southeast corner of the town square. It was hard for him to both earn a living and tend a telegram bearing only two words: “Ethel to a new baby all day, so his sister-in-law, dying.” Loulie Sprowl, stepped in to help raise Ethel while E.R. was out selling insurance. One can scarcely imagine the anguish they must have felt at this terrible piece of news Aunt Loulie contracted brain fever and died – first the Sprowls lost Sadie, then Loulie, suddenly when Ethel was just six months and now the newest member of the family old. It is believed that Ethel caught the was about to depart from them as well. disease from her and became gravely ill. Obviously, Ethel’s story had a happy ending, Soon thereafter, family members received

as she was photographed at nine months of age, wearing her pretty little black leather shoes. Still, her illness and the fear of losing her must have made an indelible impression on the lives of those who cared for her, since they felt the need to preserve one of the shoes she wore in the photo as a symbol of her recovery and a reminder of just how close they came to losing her. This is just one of countless examples of how precarious Loulie Sprowl life could be for our forefathers, yet they paved the way for civilization with their own unique stories to tell as we know it – including advances in – museums are full of such artifacts medicine. One could easily say that we owe – and you would be surprised at our lives to them. Undoubtedly, there are just how many you might have lying myriad bits and pieces of history floating around your own home. around out there, just like Ethel’s shoe, all
