Luke Hancock’s downtown Louisville office will soon be sporting a new custom-made desk, fashioned from a choice slab of hard maple. THE FOUNDING OF JEFFERSONTOWN 220 YEARS LATER Writer / Beth Wilder, Director of the Jeffersontown Historical Museum
This year (May 3), marks the 220th anniversary of Jeffersontown’s official incorporation as a city. In the late 1700s, land grants were issued to veterans of the Revolutionary War. Peter Shepherd, who served with General George Rogers Clark in 1778-79, received a warrant for several thousand acres, including land which would later become known as Shepherdsville and Bullitt County. He deeded 500 acres of his land in the eastern part of Jefferson County to Frederick Geiger on February 5, 1794, and on May 6, 1794, Geiger deeded 122 acres of the beautiful forested ridge along Chenoweth Run Creek to Abraham Bruner.
Bruner had very definite ideas as to how that acreage should be used. Since the 1770s, the crossroads that would become known as the town square had been used as a resting place for people on their way to the port city that would officially be incorporated as “Louisville” in 1828. Since people were already stopping in the area to make wagon repairs and rest before completing their journey to Louisville, Bruner decided it would be a good idea to divide his newly acquired 122 acres into lots for homes and businesses. Tanners, taverns, wheelwrights and other establishments soon sprung up on the town square, and the city was officially incorporated as “Jeffersontown” on May 3, 1797.
10 / JEFFERSONTOWN MAGAZINE / MAY 2017 / JeffersontownMag.com
Although it was common practice to name new cities after the current President of the United States, who at the time happened to be John Adams, the primarily German and Scotch-Irish residents of this newly established town agreed more with Vice-President Thomas Jefferson’s politics and opted to name their new home after him instead. Even so, proud of their city’s actual founder, many residents happily referred to the area as “Brunerstown” for the next hundred years. Once the town was incorporated, boundaries were established and the tract was divided into 120 lots, each measuring 66-feet across the front but varying in length. Main Street, the very heart of town, would later become known as Watterson Trail, and Market Street, which crossed the center of town, would become Taylorsville Road. The area encompassed by the town plat was officially considered “Jeffersontown.” Anything outside of those boundaries was considered “near Jeffersontown,” even into the early 1900s. The land surrounding the town was largely devoted to farming, and a handful of people owned rather vast amounts of acreage, which would be subdivided as time wore on. The early population of Jeffersontown was not large, by any means — the 1860 census recorded only 315 people.

“THE BEST PLACE TO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY”
The early 1900s saw the first major growth spurt in Jeffersontown. Many new business ventures opened, such as the Jefferson County Bank in 1904 and The Jeffersonian newspaper in 1907. In 1909, several local businessmen banded together to form a “Commercial Club” - much like a Chamber of Commerce - with the intent to make Jeffersontown a more “progressive” city and thereby lure more people and businesses to the area. This inspired the local ladies to create an “Improvement League” to beautify the town. It helped that the interurban streetcar began running between Louisville and Jeffersontown on May 2, 1903, thus allowing easy transport into town for those who normally might never have ventured here otherwise. Part of the vision held by town leaders was to see an increase in settlement. The first subdivisions in Jeffersontown were Gregg’s Addition and Livingston Heights, both created in the early 1900s. They were followed in 1910 by Jefferson Heights Subdivision, which also included land set aside for a new, up-to-date school. This new area was laid out by Olmstead Brothers, the same parties who designed the Louisville park system. Remnants of their work can be seen in the names of roads such as Maple, Willow and Locust, which represented the trees originally chosen to line each street. The 1920s in Jeffersontown saw a building boom but not for the best of reasons. Two major fires occurred on the town square in 1921 and 1925, destroying many important buildings. At the time, Jeffersontown only had what was known as a “bucket brigade” to fight fires — that is, local residents came running with buckets that
were filled at the nearest town water source (which happened to be the Mill Pond, located behind E.G. Hewitt Hardware, currently Neutz Brothers Used Car lot). The wooden frame structures of the time tended to be built closely together, so fires could, and did, spread rapidly. The 1925 fire was the final straw for the city leaders as the entire northeast corner of the town square was destroyed. They decided that from then on, buildings must be constructed of something far more sturdy than wood frames. Dr. Shacklette, whose home and business was the first in town to be constructed of terra cotta tile, still stands near where the old Mill Pond sat. A more noticeable consequence of the 1925 fire was the construction of one of Jeffersontown’s best-known features — the block of buildings from the corner where King Southern Bank now stands to the Jeffersontown Hardware store. Jeffersontown remained a small, rural town for the next few decades, although its population managed to double every 20 years. In the 1960s, land was annexed and the Bluegrass Research and Industrial Park was founded. Jeffersontown has grown by leaps and bounds ever since. So, the lovely little town that was established 220 years ago this month to provide a tranquil resting place and a hub for business activity has come full circle, becoming a leading locality to live and conduct business.

his is the time of year to plant flowers! Flowers bring extra beauty and happiness into our world, and the best kind of flowering plant is the kind that keeps coming back year after year — the perennial. Growing perennials is one of the easiest ways to garden. I have more than 40 varieties of perennials in my yard, I just love them because they give me a great ‘cutting’ selection all growing season long in which to make beautiful floral arrangements. In the summer months, entertaining and gardening life go hand in hand.
the eye move freely through the plot. This is more of an English gardening technique.
DIGGING A NEW HOME
I give perennials a good watering when I get them home. Then, trim off any tired foliage or blooms. I like to plant in the lowest heat portion of the day, usually in the morning. Roll the round edges of the plastic container on the ground to loosen the soil, and then tip the pot to gently lift out the root ball
into your hand. Check the root system, claw away some of the dirt so that the roots become loose and free to branch out when planted in the soil. Place root ball in the prepared hole. The top of the dirt from the pot should be level with the top of the hole at soil grade. Backfill the dirt into the hole and gently press to firm up the plant. This also helps remove any air pockets. Water in well.
PURCHASING PERENNIALS
Different sizes of containers will yield more or less bloom. The bigger the plastic pot, the older the plant, thus, more blooms. Check the roots for an established root system with lots of little root ends showing. If roots have become root bound, which looks like rope wrapped around the base of the plant, choose another specimen. A root-bound plant has been there awhile, so there is more of a chance to bring home disease, too. Also, believe it or not, I often smell the soil. It should be earthy and fresh smelling, not sour or decaying in smell. In addition, when picking the right plants to purchase from your local nursery, check the foliage for any disease. Look for the red spider mites or white aphids, which kind of look like cotton. If there is any indication, find another flowered friend!
SUCCESSION PLANTING
When one plant is finished blooming and the last bloom fades, I always design my gardens so that another plant begins to bloom. This keeps the garden in perpetual motion, with color consistently ever-present. It is called, succession planting. Another great tip is to design the flower garden with plants low in the front and high in the back. I also like to repeat a perennial three times in the garden plot, spaced apart from each other but in equal distances, this way there is easy rhythm in the design and JeffersontownMag.com / MAY 2017 / JEFFERSONTOWN MAGAZINE / 15
CHOOSING THE RIGHT PLANT Choose plants that are indigenous to your area for the very best results. Always add a new and interesting plant each year. Select plants with interesting foliage as well as bloom. Fragrant blooms are best and add so much beauty to your life. Divide existing perennials to create more inventories. Keep fertilizing, deadheading, watering and weeding.

GENDER REVEAL A
R
Writer / Eghe Lenze
T
here’s an exciting new trend among expecting families called gender reveal parties. If you’re asking yourself, “What’s a gender reveal party?” then you either don’t know anyone who’s expecting, you aren’t expecting or you live under a rock. A gender reveal party is a party to find out the gender of an expecting couple’s baby. Generally, gender reveal parties lie somewhere between the pregnancy
T
E
I
announcement and the baby shower. Thanks to social media, this trend is exploding with some good and bad reviews, but it’s a trend that is not going anywhere any time soon. Who is doing it? A lot of people. Gender reveal parties started popping up around 2011 with a simple cake you could cut into to find out reveal the baby’s gender: blue for boy and pink for girl. What started with a small gathering of immediate families has grown to include friends, extended families
S
and even the whole world. Celebrities like Snooki, Dave Annable and Carrie Underwood, just to name a few, revealed their baby’s gender on national television or video to not only tell their families but the entire world. Other celebrities have used gender reveals on their Instagram and other social media pages. If you are invited to a gender reveal party, you should expect food and games, maybe even together. Be prepared to have some
20 / JEFFERSONTOWN MAGAZINE / MAY 2017 / JeffersontownMag.com
cookies or cupcakes either pink, blue or some neutral color. Games often include guessing the gender of what you think the baby might be, predicting the day of birth or learning old wives’ tales of boys versus girls. Finally, the reveal — is it a boy or a girl? If you are thinking of bringing a gift, it’s not necessary (unless it’s a shower and gender reveal in one). Thinking of throwing one? Let your sonographer know ahead of time that’s the plan, but you can always know and keep it a secret too. Bring an envelope if you don’t want to know and ask the sonographer to put the gender inside. At that point, you can give the envelope to a trusted friend or family member or give it directly to your baker/party planner. If you plan on doing a cake reveal, contact a local bakery and see if they accommodate your request. Setting the date a month in advance for your gender reveal party is enough time for you to plan and invite guests. Decide
BOY? GIRL?
OR
how you want to do the reveal — Cake? Balloons? Silly string? Reveal tees? The possibilities are endless and honestly a lot of fun! If you are looking for a little bit of inspiration, check out our Pinterest page for tons of ideas. Pinterest is full of tips that you can use for themed gender reveal parties such as Football theme, Ties or Tutus and What will it Bee. Don’t forget to check out gender reveal themed decor. Visit your local party supply store for more ideas. Another forgotten gem for
inspiration is Etsy. If you have something more out of the box, this is definitely the place to go for inspiration, ideas and oneof-a-kind decor. And to see what not to do, search YouTube. Whether you have been to one, think it’s ridiculous to have one, are thinking of having one for your first or your third or never heard of one, one thing is for sure — this trend is not going away. Prepare to see more Instagram reveals, YouTube videos and whatever social media platform is coming next. My advice, enjoy the cake.

LUKE HANCOCK hom e t ow n mvp
Former Louisville Champion Returns to Kentucky for New Career Writer / Dave Schroerlucke
Luke Hancock’s downtown Louisville office will soon be sporting a new custommade desk, fashioned from a choice slab of hard maple. This is no ordinary piece of wood — it is a piece of history, a segment of the basketball court that donned the floor of the Georgia Dome during the 2013 NCAA Final Four, where the University of Louisville men’s basketball team completed their triumphant run to the school’s third National Championship. For Luke, the keepsake will serve as a daily reminder of his role in that championship — a role so vital that he was awarded the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, becoming the only reserve (non-starter) to receive the award in NCAA tournament history dating back to 1939. During the 2012-2013 season, Luke embraced his role as a utility player and, despite coming off the bench, always saw himself as an integral part of the team. “To me I was the glue guy,” Hancock says. “There was a lot of talent on that team. Five of those guys played in the NBA. My job was just to piece it all together. I tried to be that veteran guy that made sure we were focused and doing all the right things.” Of course, Luke’s stellar shooting ability didn’t hurt the team’s chances either. His uncanny knack for hitting big shots in critical situations earned him the nickname “Cool Hand Luke” from Coach Rick Pitino, who considered him to be the team’s best clutch shooter. Luke certainly lived up to his epithet in the Final Four, during which his clutch sharpshooting and veteran leadership were on full display. In the Championship game, with the Cardinals trailing Michigan by
12 points late in the first half, Luke singlehandedly kept the game from getting out of reach by making four three-pointers and scoring 14 consecutive points in the final three minutes before halftime to trim the lead to one point. Luke then drained his fifth three-pointer (perfect in five attempts) with just 2:39 left to play in the game, extending the Cardinals’ lead to 10 points and essentially sealing the victory. His incredible performance solidified Luke’s place among March Madness lore and enshrined him as a hero in the eyes of Louisville fans forever. Following graduation, Luke bounced around in a couple of NBA summer leagues, was signed and later waived by the Memphis Grizzlies and ultimately landed overseas playing in the Greek Basketball League. After only six games, Luke suffered an Achilles tendon tear that forced him to contemplate life after basketball much sooner than expected. Having purchased a home in Louisville prior to playing for
the Grizzlies, Luke had already planned to return to Louisville to live at some point. “It’s a city and community that’s done a lot for me and been supportive of me,” he says. “I have a good group of friends here. There was really no doubt that I was going to come back here.” Luke wasted no time making the transition, promptly accepting a position in the financial sector that had been offered to him before leaving for Greece. Now, with two years of finance experience under his belt, Luke has joined the team at Clearpath Financial, a subsidiary of Raymond James offering comprehensive financial planning services and wealth management. No longer the veteran, Luke’s role is to “get out there and let people know what we do and how we do it.” “We’re not just stockbrokers,” he says. “We’re financial planners who can assist in every aspect of finance.”
“There was a lot of talent on that team. Five of those guys played in the NBA. My job was just to piece it all together.”
JeffersontownMag.com / MAY 2017 / JEFFERSONTOWN MAGAZINE / 27
Just as he did for the Cardinals, Luke prides himself on having the versatility to do what needs to be done in any given situation. “I had to do a lot of different things playing for the Cards,” Luke says. “Now, when people come to me and need help with some type of financial solution, I have to wear a lot of different hats. Whether that’s helping someone sell a business, or managing someone’s 401k or IRA, there’s just such a wide array of things that clients can present. Every situation is unique, and I have to be able to accommodate a lot of different things.” Acknowledging that he could have
ventured out on his own, Luke felt more comfortable joining an established team with a proven track record so that he could “leverage the experience, expertise and resources of those that have been there and done that so I am better equipped to help anyone I come across.” In addition to his work as a financial advisor, Luke has also been collaborating with some software developers on a mobile application called Shortnotice. The app aims at using social media to get people off of social media, allowing local businesses to offer real-time deals and promotions to patrons in the area who are then able to send invites to organize spontaneous
meet-ups with friends. A big advantage of Shortnotice is its customizability. “With some of the larger social media apps, you constantly get bombarded by ads that you don’t want,” Luke explains. “With Shortnotice, you choose the places you want to get ads from. So (the app) has a little more respect for the user, which I like.” When not working, Luke enjoys playing a round of golf at nearby Woodhaven or shooting some hoops wherever he can find a good pick-up game. “I’m still a ‘basketball junkie’” he quips, while checking his smartphone for the

latest scores from NCAA tournament games going on in the background at RecBar, which happens to be one of his favorite J-town hotspots. A self-proclaimed “sandwich guy,” Luke also likes to hit up Potbelly’s nearly every time he is in the area for lunch. When asked if he frequently gets approached by fans, Luke explained that he is far more likely to be recognized when he is wearing a beard than when clean-shaven. “The craziest thing for me is when people come up and they say ‘my son was named after you,’” Luke says. “I’ve signed autographs ‘From one Luke to another.’ Being someone’s namesake, I think that’s pretty wild.” Luke doesn’t let the popularity go to his head but instead relishes the fact that he was able to bring joy to so many people. “The best part of that experience of winning the championship has been how many people it affected,” Luke says. “How many things in your life can you remember where you were, who you were with and every detail about it? For a Louisville fan, us winning the championship was that moment. People come up to me and tell me their stories all the time, how they were able to share that experience with their families. It’s pretty special being part of such a significant moment in their lives.” Moving forward, Luke’s primary goal is to continue having a positive impact in the community by helping people in his new role as a financial advisor.
Let Let our our championship championship team team CLEAR CLEAR the the way way for for your your financial financial Path! Path! Let our championship team CLEAR the way for your financial Path!
“People know me as a basketball player, but my transition into finance has been a great one. It’s something I really enjoy doing,” he says. Focused on building solid lifelong relationships with his clients, Luke looks forward to being able to help individuals and families achieve their financial goals as they evolve across the lifespan. Paraphrasing a quote from the late Zig Ziglar, who influenced his decision to go into finance, Luke expressed his strong conviction about the importance of helping those around him be successful. “I feel that if I can take care of enough people and do the right things for enough people, then I will be happy and successful, and I’ll be in this community for a long time,” Luke says.

HIDDEN TREASURES
LOCAL BAKERY AND CAFE IS A MIDDLETOWN HIDDEN TREASURE Writer / Heather Chastain
Tucked away in the cellar of a historic home is a delightfully charming bakery with European flair. The Plump Peacock Bakery and Café made its home in Middletown eight years ago. “I decided to do what my passion is in life, and that’s to feed people,” said owner Elizabeth Wingfield. She started as a vendor in the local farmer’s markets. “People kept asking me where my store was and then this place fell in my lap.” Her loyal customer following has made The Plump Peacock a popular location for breakfast, lunch and a once-a-month reservation only dinner. “People come in and sit down and start talking to one another,” Wingfield says. “They’ll even push their tables together and share a dessert. When people come in, they aren’t on their phones unless it’s to snap a group picture or take a picture of the food. They are talking to each other.” Known for her breads, pies and cakes, Wingfield said she can host or prepare a pastry for any occasion. Chef Liz’s signature maple bacon muffins have been especially coveted. What sets her
sweet goods apart is how she prepares them. Wingfield uses an European style. “They have less sugar. It’s still sweet, but not sickeningly sweet,” Wingfield says. This summer you can come out and sit in the courtyard and enjoy some of her savory café items as well. “I hand pick all of my produce, vegetables and meats,” she says. “I also raise all of my own herbs out front. I have a high standard for customer care and quality of food. I want the best staff, best equipment and highest quality ingredients.” The comfortable, inviting atmosphere has an old-world charm with antique furniture and European décor, white table linens, china and fresh flowers on the tables. Despite being in business for several years, Wingfield says people are still just discovering The Plump Peacock. “Once people find us, they keep coming back. It’s so relaxing in here.” Make sure you find the Plump Peacock when you turn on Harrison, there’s a parking lot in the back.

Just 25 minutes outside of downtown Louisville, you’ll find a 300acre, hidden gem nestled in the middle of the hustle and bustle of city life. Blackacre Conservancy is filled with rolling fields, forests and streams that surround the historic homestead, which lies at the heart of the Blackacre Nature Preserve.
“You can still see the marks on the logs where the pioneers cut the wood,” Josey says. You can also see the Presley Tyler Farmhouse, a two-story house that was originally built for $250 in 1844. It still has its original floors and massive fireplaces for open-floor fires. The spring house was built from limestone and has a split shale roof.
The preserve’s history integrates education, agriculture, nature and historic preservation with visitor programs, a few private residences, a neighborhood garden and community activities.
“We always want to go the extra mile to preserve and protect our property,” Josey says. “We want to leave it better than we found it for the future generations to use.”
“We want to be part of raising responsible people to conserve, preserve and protect the environment,” says Executive Director Dale Josey. “We want to give people an appreciation for nature.”
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Blackacre provides opportunities for visitors to explore the property through school field trips, summer camps, workshops, lectures, concerts and many other programs allow visitors to learn in this place of natural and historic beauty. You can walk the trails, learn about trees and leaves or go on a selfguided tour of the log barn built in the 1700s.
Josey said Blackacre’s community garden program has proved to be a melting pot of different cultures in Jefferson County. “We have Europeans, Somalians, Hmong, Chinese, Japanese and Korean cultures all participating in our community garden,” he says. “It’s a great opportunity for everyone to see all of the crops from the different cultures.” The community garden program allows people to buy a 30x30 plot for $30 a year to grow their own vegetables. This year, they are also

beginning a garden in a box program which will allow people to rent a row in a garden for a reduced price. “We get so many people who are overwhelmed by the size of the larger plot or have never gardened before and want to try it out,” Josey says. “The garden in a box is a great way to get their toes wet.” They also have a community garden manager who can help assist you if you’re new to gardening about when to plant, how to care for them and when to harvest. Josey said they get a lot of returning gardeners every year and have a lot of young families. “It’s really wonderful to see the young families out there together. In fact, once we saw a young mother out with her children showing them how to plant seeds,” he says. “And one of her little guy’s – probably around age 3 – was following behind digging up all the seeds,” Josey chuckled. “it’s cool to see families out doing a garden together.”

Full time staff member Allison Wroblewski, responsible for Programs & Special Events, and Executive Director A. Dale Josey work with a team of dedicated contractors and volunteers essential to maintaining the 300acre historic homestead and state nature preserve located at 3200 Tucker Station RD. Photo was taken in front of large stone fireplace inside the Stone Cottage (c.1795) complete with a 200-year old flint lock rifle donated to Blackacre.
FUN FOR KIDS Other ways young children can get involved at Blackacre is to participate in their Wee Explorers camp. Geared toward children ages 5-8, this year’s program is called Pioneers Then and Now.

“Kids are enamored with electronics, but this gives them a chance to be out in the woods for a week,” Josey says. “We give them a full textile experience. We also have arts and crafts. It really gives kids a chance to appreciate life on the farm.”

On the historic homestead farm, they have cows, goats and horses for people to feed throughout the year, too. “We want kids to be able to understand more about farm to table,” Josey says. “Kids don’t always know where beef comes from. We’ll ask them ‘would you eat a cow?’ and they’ll respond ‘no! that’s gross!’ But then we ask them if they eat at McDonalds and they always say yes. It’s just about educating them.”
GET MARRIED AT BLACKACRE The historic beauty has made Blackacre a popular location for weddings. Josey said last year they booked more than two dozen weddings and special events. If you’re interested in booking your wedding, they suggest booking early as many popular 2017 dates have already been taken.

When Roscoe was still a child, the Goose family moved to the Butchertown area so that work would be easier to obtain. Roscoe Goose, a descendant of one of Roscoe and his four brothers had to do Jeffersontown’s founding families that dates their share in supporting the family, so back to the 1770s, was born in 1891 on they took odd jobs. Roscoe started out the family farm at Rehl and Blankenbaker as a newspaper boy but later received Roads. Roscoe rode to fame in the 1913 Kentucky Derby, astride a horse named Donerail. The horse was so poorly regarded that its owner, Thomas P. Hayes, and Roscoe himself, did not even bother betting on him. Hayes told Roscoe to just “go for cornbread”, that is, just “run well enough to pay the entry fee.” Donerail surprised everyone that year. With 91:1 odds — the longest in Kentucky Derby history, Goose prodded Donerail to win the race by a half-length at the wire. The horse paid $184.90 for a $2 wager, an all-time

Derby record. Roscoe Goose received $500 for the win, which he immediately blew on a party for all the jockeys. He and his brother, fellow jockey Carl Ganz (the German spelling of Goose), who won the Kentucky Oaks that same year, bought a spacious three-story brick house on Third Street near Churchill Downs for their mother. Tragically, she suffered fatal burns in a small fire at the residence. Roscoe married his lovely cousin, Frances Baird, and he continued to live in that house until his death in 1971. Roscoe and his wife loved to entertain, and everybody who was anybody came to the lavish Derby parties thrown by the couple. Carl Ganz, unfortunately, died in a race track accident in 1915, prompting Roscoe Goose to advocate the wearing of helmets by all jockeys and to have helmets become part of their required racing gear. After Roscoe retired from racing following a track injury he sustained in 1918, he made the care of jockeys his life-long pursuit. He served as mentor to many jockeys, allowing them to stay at his home whenever necessary and ultimately ended up adopting a young man who tended the horses of Roscoe’s close friend, local real estate developer and philanthropist, James Graham Brown. Roscoe Goose — nicknamed “the Golden Goose” — was one of the first 10 men to be named to the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame and was president of the Thoroughbred Breeders Association for three years. He is one of the few jockeys to win both the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks (1916). He became a millionaire but never forgot his roots or the poverty he experienced as a youth. Even though he kept company with the rich and famous, Roscoe always took the opportunity to help those who were experiencing difficulties. The National Turfwriter’s Association pronounced him “a thorough gentleman and example of all that’s best in racing.”
