MARTINO’S ITALIAN VILLA CO-OWNER TALKS RESTAURANT’S PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE Writer / Julie Yates Photography Provided

Martino’s Italian Villa is undeniably one of Kokomo’s most popular eating establishments. It has been at its current location on North Washington Street since 1972, and has existed since 1962. Mike Martino, son of Angela and Frank Martino who originally opened the restaurant, credits its success to delicious food made

from authentic recipes. In order to be proactive and ensure future generations can enjoy the same experience their parents and grandparents did, the owners decided to put the eatery, including its recipes, up for sale.

the time I was about 9 years old, I was peeling onions and sweeping floors. At age 14, I was on the schedule doing carry-out. My parents did it the old way - if you want it done right, do it yourself. My 85-year-old mother is still here every day cooking and doing bookwork.”

“The restaurant has been our life,” Mike Martino says. “As a kid, I spent more time at the restaurant than I did at home. Around

It’s situated on the north end of town, and 90% of patrons are local and make a conscious decision to come to Martino’s.

Most come in for a meal, and for years families have chosen the spot for occasions such as birthdays, rehearsal dinners, baby showers and even funeral dinners at the restaurant. Several generations of the same family have been employed there as well. “We couldn’t do it without the customers and our staff,” Martino says. “People come in for the food and the atmosphere. We are actually serving the fourth and fifth generations of families. I went to school with the grandparents of some of our employees, and we have had three generations of the same family - grandmother, mother and son - work for us.” It is hard to pin down the most popular items, since many patrons tend to rave about everything on the menu. All the dishes are made from Angela Martino’s old-world recipes. Italian roast beef sandwiches, pizza, lasagna, chicken parmesan and spaghetti with meatballs are huge sellers. “I eat as much of our restaurant’s food and pizza now as I ever did,” Martino says. “I never get tired of it. A newer item, which has been on the menu only in the last five years but existed before as a special or if anyone asked for it, is Rolla Vacca. Rolla Vacca looks like a burrito, but it is Italian roast beef and mozzarella

Some people ask for it to be made with Alfredo sauce.” Martino has many memories associated with the restaurant, and one in particular stands out. “During the ice storm of ’91, most of Kokomo lost power, but for some reason we didn’t,” he recalls. “Everyone was trying to find a place to eat that was open and people flocked in. It was an honor, but exhausting. We were just running on adrenaline.” Since he is in good health and enjoys a steady stream of customers, many people wonder why Martino and his mother are selling the restaurant. The answer is that with no children or interested family members to take over, he doesn’t want the recipes and traditions of Martino’s to cease. Martino hopes for a smooth transition, during which he would work with the new owners. “We know that when the time is right, the right person will come along,” he says. “It’s a great opportunity for someone. We are old-fashioned - we do everything by phone. This place has a lot of potential for someone who can keep up with trends like online ordering. I still enjoy going in every day, but I want to have the foresight to make sure Martino’s is around for future generations.” Martino’s Italian Villa is located at 1929 North Washington Street in Kokomo. SECRET TO SUCCESS

GRINDSTONE CHARLEY’S ENJOYS RARE STAYING POWER IN THE LOCAL DINING SCENE

10 / KOKOMO MAGAZINE / FEBRUARY 2021 / atKokomo.com

Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Jim Hunt

In a business where establishments shine brightly when they initially appear on the scene only to fizzle out within a few short years, the longevity of Grindstone Charley’s Restaurant + Bar is considerable. Opened by the Fogelsong family in 1998, right in the heart of Kokomo at State Road 931 and Alto Road, the eatery has three generations of experience behind it. Blake Fogelsong, owner and director of operations, and his father Perry Fogelsong, president and CEO of Clancy’s Inc., credit the restaurant’s success to the ability to change with the times, yet maintain consistent quality and the capability to provide excellent customer service. “In 1965 my grandfather opened Clancy’s Hamburgers in Noblesville,” Blake says.

“It closed in 2004, but it was innovative at the time since it was the first double drive-through fast-food restaurant in the Midwest.” In 1982 Perry began to open Grindstone Charley’s restaurants, which began the company’s growth into full-service eateries. “When my dad began to grow the fullservice side in the 1990s, we had to deal with national chains,” Blake says. “We’ve really strived to brand our company as local and family. We don’t try to compete as a chain restaurant anymore - we want to be known as the local neighborhood gem at any of our concepts. We also want to use as many local products as we can.” The staff and leaders at Grindstone Charley’s in Kokomo feel fortunate to have maintained loyal customers who have frequented the restaurant through the years.

They keep coming back for a couple key reasons. While they know the items ordered will always have the same delicious taste expected, the menu itself isn’t stagnant. Several seasonal menus are offered at different times throughout the year. Sherri Chorrushi, General Manager (22 years)

“My official title is president and CEO, but I’m really the ‘Director of Continuous Improvement,’” Perry says. “We have an attitude of always looking forward, getting to the next level. Exceptional customer service is the rule. There are members of the Kokomo team of employees that have been with the company ever since it opened. Their motto is, ‘The answer is yes. Now, what’s the question?’” The challenge of COVID didn’t prevent the restaurant from continuing to serve residents. Although closed for indoor dining during the government-mandated business shutdowns last year, online ordering for carry-out and delivery through DoorDash and Grubhub was implemented. When the restaurant reopened a couple months later, customers appreciated safety protocols such as the installation of plexiglass between seating areas. “It’s all the little details that separate good restaurants from great ones, and I think I learned that early on from growing up in a restaurant family,” Blake says. “We would go out to dinner and my dad pointed out what things to look for, like checking on the landscaping when pulling into the parking lot, all the way down to the salt and pepper shakers being aligned on the table properly.” Grindstone Charley’s specializes in American cuisine, and the choices span from appetizers to desserts. They are known for steaks and seafood, as well as popular items such as pork tenderloin sandwiches and specialty burgers. Comfort foods include homemade chicken and noodles as well as soup. Indiana’s state pie, sugar cream, is just one of the indulgent desserts available. Prices run from around $10 on up for

appetizers, salads and soups. Most mains start at $12.99 for a six-ounce top sirloin, to $29.99 for a 16-ounce serving of prime rib. Desserts are around $5. “After growing up in the business I really learned to love it and couldn’t see myself doing anything else,” Blake adds. “It can be stressful and long hours, but when I was growing up my dad used to tell me three things - focus, intensity and concentration. We tell the story of the company’s history by giving our customers the best products we can, all while giving exceptional hospitality. We really want to thank Kokomo for their overwhelming support and loyalty.” Grindstone Charley’s is located at 3830 South Lafountain Street in Kokomo. For more info, call 765-453-9125.
