HAYNES APPERSON FESTIVAL FEATURES TOP-NOTCH FUN Writer / Matt Keating Photography / Provided
Kokomo residents and people from across Indiana and other nearby states are excited about the next Haynes Apperson Festival, set for July 1-3, 2021.
Howard County Commissioner Paul Wyman says the annual fair has a rich tradition.
We do the Festival on a July 4 weekend to commemorate the test drive of America’s first car, right here in Kokomo, Indiana, on Pumpkinvine Pike, on July 4, 1894.”
“The Festival was started in 1976,” Wyman says. “It was started by the Pioneer Auto Club Wyman noted that people can’t wait for this to celebrate our Communities Automotive year’s festival. Heritage. It’s Kokomo’s claim to fame.

“It’s an action-packed weekend,” he says. “It’s three days of a lot of fun. We have a lot of car shows to honor Kokomo’s automotive heritage.” The car shows feature cars from the early 1900s, all the way through cars from today. There is also a fun commemorative 5K run, and a cruise-in. “The residents of Kokomo also line the streets of the city for the annual parade at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 3, that goes through downtown Kokomo,” Wyman says. “Everyone loves it. People are especially excited about it this year.” The parade celebrates both the United States’ independence, and the city’s automotive heritage. Wyman says festival attendees this year can once again expect great, high-quality entertainment.

“We will have live entertainment on the stage every night, as well as some really fun rides, great food vendors, and a sports festival,” he says. The sports festival includes basketball, karate, canoeing, tennis, volleyball, the 5K run, pole vaulting, a corn hole tournament and more. “There really is a lot of fun things to do for the whole family,” he says. “We have a lot of people who come back every year, because they had a lot of fun the previous years at the festival.”
The live music this year will also garner a lot of festival goers. “On Thursday, July 1, Sister Hazel will perform,” Wyman says. “On Friday, July 2, we will have Here Come the Mummies, and on Saturday, July 3, we will have Three Dog Night. That’s a great line up.” The festival will close with fireworks. If the weather permits, the fireworks will start immediately following the concert on Saturday evening in Foster Park. Festival goers should feel free to bring a chair or blanket to enjoy the fireworks show. Wyman says the future for the festival is very bright. “It grows each year with the quality of entertainment we bring in,” he says. “We have had Bret Michaels, Loverboy, Starship, and Boyz II Men, to name a few of the past concert performers. We have about 10,000 to 15,000 people that attend every year from Indiana, to surrounding states.” Wyman emphasizes that the festival is free. “We do sell some VIP tickets for seating close to the stage,” Wyman says. The Haynes Apperson Festival is set for July 1-3 in and around Foster Park in Kokomo. For VIP tickets, call The Wyman Group at 765-854-1234 or Palmer Jewelry at 765-452-2505. BREWS ON BUCKEYE
CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL FEATURES ARRAY OF BEER, MORE
Writer / Matt Keating Photography / Provided
Kyle Gibson, owner of The Coterie and founder and organizer of Brews on Buckeye: Indiana Craft Beer & Spirits Festival, says he is excited about the next beer festival. He says he has felt that way ever since the festival began. “When we opened The Coterie, there was a lack of craft beer in Kokomo, and we wanted to showcase all of the fine liquids being made here in Indiana,” Gibson says. “In 2015, we debuted Brews on Buckeye, and it was a huge hit!” Gibson notes that Brews on Buckeye, which takes place in downtown Kokomo on Buckeye Street, has garnered a large crowd each year, and he expects the same for this year’s festival. “The fair this year is Saturday, July 31,” he says. “People can look forward to good beer, good liquor, good food, and good people. We have invited some up and coming breweries, along with some of the crowd favorites from years past.” Gibson says Brews on Buckeye Craft Beer is the only Kokomo craft beer and craft spirits festival that celebrates all the tasty treats that Indiana has to offer. It’s also been an important addition to Kokomo’s downtown district. Gibson is glad he has been able to present more crafty beer and spirits to Kokomo.

He opened The Coteire in 2014, with his co-owner Dustin Ogle, and says he has been able to bring more great beer and food to the local community. The festival has become a big extension of that. Gibson says it’s an array of tasty Indiana breweries and distilleries, food trucks and wonderful people. Brews on Buckeye attracts a lot of different beer and food vendors who are able to give Kokomo residents a great taste of what they have to offer. All of the participants are on hand to give people what they do best: make great beer and food. Gibson’s vision for the future of the fair is
very optimistic. He believes it will continue to grow and prosper from year to year. He has positive feelings about it.
Off Square Brewing, Sun King Kokomo, Viking Artisan Ale, Westwind Brew Co. and Windmill Brewing.
“The future of the fair is bright and looks like it might eventually outgrow the stretch of north Buckeye we are currently on, so hopefully we will need to expand and conquer another area of beautiful downtown Kokomo,” Gibson says.
Distilleries include 12.05, Old 55, West Fork Whiskey and Desnuda Tequilla. Local food includes The Coterie, Oscar’s Pizza and The Struggle Bus.
The event’s confirmed breweries include: 450 North Brew Co., Bad Dad Brew Co., Burn’em Brewing; Cavalier Distributing, City Wineworks, Craftroads Beverage, Elm Street Brew Co.; Four Fathers Brewing, Half Moon Brewery, Hoosier Brew Co., McClures Orchard, Misbeehavin’ Meads,
Brews on Buckeye is set for July 31. The event is rain or shine, with no refunds. Designated driver tickets are $10, including free non-alcoholic drinks all day. WHITE LILIES N PARADISE PUSHES PETALS WITH CARING, KINDNESS Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Jason Graves
White Lilies N Paradise owner Susan Perry is dedicated to supplying Kokomo residents with plants, flowers and gifts to celebrate all the seasons of life. Her caring and enthusiasm spreads to the friendly staff who learn the names of customers and will even assist them in picking out individual bouquets or arrangements when they pop in the shop. While change has happened in the decades she’s been in business, Perry continues to love flowers and the happiness they bring people. “I worked at Carriage Manor Flowers for 23 years until the owner retired, then I took about a year and a half off,” Perry says.
“For a while I worked at Creative Financial Center scheduling events. When the owners of Big Ben Coffee wanted to step away from the flower shop part of their business, I took over. The shop became White Lilies N Paradise during the seven years it was at Forest Park Shopping Center. I moved to the Phillips Street location on Memorial Weekend in 2016, so I just celebrated my fifth-year anniversary here.” “My whole family has always been involved and all three of my daughters have taken part in the shop,” she says. “My grandson helps with delivery. I also do deliveries and while I’m out, my husband Ken watches the store. The way people react when they get flowers delivered is a reward to us. Their facial features and their attitude changes.
I love seeing the smiles when they know someone was thinking of them.” The shop’s starting price points make their silk and fresh plants and flowers available to everyone. Bouquets start at $25. Besides the option of ordering ahead, there is a cooler of pre-made arrangements inside the shop. Staff will also help walk-in customers pick out flowers by the stem. Planters in ceramic pots or baskets begin at $20. Floor plants are between $25 to $40 with the price going up from there. Seasonal blooming plants such as spring daffodils, hyacinth and tulips or autumn mums run about $25 to $30 for a six-inch pot. “It’s always best to order ahead of time to make sure you get what you want.
