“The number-one thing a parent can do to keep their child healthy is ensuring your child is up to date on vaccines.” — Dr. Dana Stewart

D

r. Dana Stewart has known since she was in high school that she wanted to help people. Originally from Indiana, Stewart, now a board-certified pediatrician, finished high school in Maryland and went on to graduate from the University of

Maryland. Then she attended and graduated from medical school at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After marrying her high school sweetheart, recently re-elected Kokomo City Councilman Tony Stewart, she completed her pediatrics residency at Dayton Children’s Hospital and has been practicing in Kokomo since 2005. She opened her own private practice, Meadows Medical Center, in September of 2018.

“I narrowed my career choice to medicine by my senior year of high school,” she says. “I then decided on pediatrics after my clinical rotations and electives in medical school. Being a physician is my ministry, and this is why I took the leap of faith to open my own practice. It has been a challenging and fulfilling journey, and I am so grateful to be able to bring healing and wellness to my patients and to their caregivers. At Meadows Medical Center we are doing health care differently by providing continuity of care, individualized care, nurturing a trusted patient-provider relationship, and respectfully listening to and partnering with caregivers to provide the best care possible for their child.” Stewart says a healthy diet, good hand washing and age-appropriate amounts of sleep are building blocks to keeping your child healthy during the winter months. Avoiding contact with sick individuals, which can be hard to do, is a top priority as well. It is common for healthy children to have up to 12 viral illnesses per year during the first few years of life, with most of these illnesses occurring during the winter months. “The number-one thing a parent can do to keep their child healthy is ensuring your child is up to date on vaccines,” she says. “Vaccines protect against preventable diseases, and as a result, the morbidity and

8 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

mortality rates have drastically decreased since before their implementation.” It’s also important that parents do the most they can, proactively, to stay healthy during the winter months when it seems like everyone and their children are sick. In the winter months, many people are vitamin D deficient due to decreased sun exposure. “Studies have shown that a vitamin D supplement is beneficial for bone health, preventing seasonal depression and overall improved well-being,” Stewart says. “Other vitamin supplements to consider are vitamin C, zinc and magnesium to help boost your immune system, but always consult your provider for what the right regimen is for you.” In addition to in-person appointments, Meadows Medical Center is accepting telehealth (both video and phone) visits, and serves patients in Indiana as well as Michigan. Outside of general health consultations, the practice offers screening, diagnosis, and management of anxiety, depression and attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder. Additionally, Stewart has developed a program structure called R.E.S.T. (copyright pending), to help children from 6 to 18 years of age learn how to recognize and cope with various emotions such as anger, depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. The youth and adolescent programs combine cognitive behavior therapy techniques as well as R.E.S.T. application, and utilization of all five senses to teach children how to cope with everyday stressors. These programs are held after school hours and on weekends. Meadows Medical Center is located at 700 East Firmin Street, Suite 195 in Kokomo. A Beginner’s Guide to Health and Wellness Story & Photography Provided

TownePost.com | February 2024 | 11

E

mbarking on a journey toward improved health and wellness can be both exciting and rewarding. For beginners, understanding the fundamentals of nutrition and exercise is key to establishing a foundation for a healthier lifestyle. This comprehensive guide aims to provide valuable insights and practical tips to kickstart your journey toward a balanced and fulfilling approach to well-being. Before beginning these lifestyle changes, please consult your local health care professional.

NUTRITION BASICS FOR BEGINNERS 1. BALANCED DIET A balanced diet is the cornerstone of good health. Aim to include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats in your meals. This diversity ensures that your body receives the essential nutrients it needs to function optimally.

Memberships available to anyone in Howard and Tipton counties.

2. HYDRATION Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Consider replacing sugary drinks with water, herbal teas or infused water for added flavor without the extra calories. 3. PORTION CONTROL Pay attention to portion sizes to avoid overeating. Use smaller plates, listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues, and savor each bite. Eating mindfully can help prevent mindless overconsumption. 4. LIMIT PROCESSED FOODS Minimize your intake of processed and sugary foods. These items are often high in unhealthy fat, sugar and salt, contributing to weight gain and negatively impacting overall health. 5. MEAL PLANNING Plan your meals in advance to ensure you have nutritious options readily available. Preparing meals at home allows you to control ingredients and make healthier choices.

EXERCISE ESSENTIALS FOR BEGINNERS

1. START SLOW If you’re new to exercise, begin with lowintensity activities. Walking, swimming or cycling are excellent choices for beginners. Gradually increase the intensity and duration as your fitness level improves. 2. SET REALISTIC GOALS Establish achievable and realistic fitness goals. Whether it’s walking for 30 minutes a day or completing a short workout routine, setting attainable goals will keep you motivated.

3. MIX IT UP Variety is key to maintaining interest and preventing boredom. Incorporate a mix of cardiovascular exercises (e.g., walking, jogging) and strength training (e.g., bodyweight exercises, light weights) to target different muscle groups and improve overall fitness. 4. PRIORITIZE CONSISTENCY OVER INTENSITY Consistency is crucial in building a sustainable exercise routine. Aim for regular, moderate-intensity workouts rather than sporadic high-intensity sessions. Consistency leads to lasting results. 5. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY Pay attention to how your body responds to exercise. If you experience pain (not to be confused with the normal discomfort of a challenging workout), give yourself time to recover and consider adjusting your routine.

INTEGRATING NUTRITION AND EXERCISE

4. BUILD A SUPPORT SYSTEM Surround yourself with a supportive community. Share your goals with friends and family, or join fitness classes or groups. Having a support system can provide encouragement and accountability. Health and wellness for beginners involves understanding the fundamentals of nutrition and exercise. By incorporating

balanced nutrition, gradual and consistent exercise, and mindful lifestyle choices, individuals can pave the way for a healthier and more fulfilling life. Remember, small changes add up over time, and the key is to find a sustainable and enjoyable approach that aligns with your personal preferences and goals.

1. TIMING MATTERS Consider the timing of your meals in relation to your workouts. Eating a balanced meal or snack before exercising can provide the necessary energy, while post-exercise nutrition aids in recovery. 2. SEEK PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE If possible, consult with a nutritionist or fitness professional, especially when starting a new regimen. They can provide personalized advice based on your individual needs and goals. 3. CELEBRATE PROGRESS Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Whether it’s completing a workout or choosing a nutritious meal, recognizing progress fosters a positive mindset and motivates continued efforts.

WORKHORSE GYM HELPS MEMBERS FOCUS ON PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL HEALTH Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Dylan Senkus

TownePost.com | February 2024 | 17

R

on Nichols with Workhorse Gym and Freedom Strength and Fitness says he enjoys empowering people to meet their fitness goals.

“I’m the heart and soul behind Workhorse Gym and Freedom Strength and Fitness,” Nichols says. “My journey in the fitness world has been driven by a desire to redefine traditional fitness norms. Instead of fixating on the scale, we focus on empowering individuals, particularly those over 40, to reclaim their health and confidence. This philosophy stems from my own experiences and observations in the fitness industry, where I noticed a gap in services that cater to the unique needs of the 40-and-over demographic. Our approach is holistic, focusing on emotional and physical well-being.” Nichols loves working with his clients. “As the founder and majority stockholder, I’ve dedicated my career to making Workhorse Gym more than just a place to exercise,” he says. “It’s a community where we support each other’s journeys. We don’t just sell memberships. We create relationships. Our gym is about personal attention, ensuring every member, especially those facing challenges, feels guided and valued. This commitment stems from a personal belief that fitness is a lifelong journey and everyone deserves a supportive environment to thrive in.” Nichols says the location was chosen for its accessibility and sense of community, and he enjoys making members feel welcome. “Workhorse Gym was founded in 2016 out of a deep-seated need to bring authenticity back into the fitness world,” Nichols says. “Witnessing the transformation of a local gym from a community hub into a faceless, big-box establishment, I was driven to create a space where people could connect, not just exercise. Workhorse Gym is the result of that vision - a place where every member, regardless of their fitness level, feels like they belong and can achieve their health goals.” Members enjoy the fact that Workhorse Gym focuses on people over 40, helping them stay healthy and avoid getting hurt.

18 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

“Our core focus is on transforming lives, not just bodies,” Nichols says. “We cater to individuals over 40 who have been disillusioned by yo-yo dieting and standard fitness routines. Our approach is comprehensive, addressing the physical, emotional and mental aspects of health. We’ve seen incredible transformations, with members achieving more than just weight loss - gaining energy, strength and a renewed zest for life.” Nichols says guidance and community are highlighted at Workhorse Gym. “We have a range of equipment, but honestly it’s not about equipment,” he says. “If it was, everyone would have met their fitness goals already. Our philosophy at Workhorse Gym is that the real magic happens through guidance and community, not machines. We emphasize personal attention, with coaches who work alongside you, ensuring that each exercise is tailored to your needs. This approach is particularly beneficial for our members over 40, as it guarantees that their workouts are effective, safe and aligned with their personal health goals.”

Nichols notes that there are a wide variety of classes “Our classes are diverse, offering everything from group training to semiprivate sessions,” Nichols says. “Each class is designed with continuous progress in mind, tailored to keep our members motivated. For those over 40, we focus on practical and enjoyable workouts that enhance daily life, using a mix of strength and metabolic training. We steer clear of repetitive, low-yield routines, instead offering dynamic, engaging sessions that make fitness a joy rather than a chore.” Nichols says there are different ways people can meet their fitness goals in 2024. “My advice for 2024 is to move away from unsustainable diets and constant scale monitoring,” he says. “Set realistic, lifestyleoriented goals like dropping clothing sizes, increasing energy levels or improving mobility. Emphasize real, nutrient-dense foods and celebrate small, daily victories. By finding joy in the process and setting attainable milestones, the results will naturally follow. This approach is especially effective for those who have experienced the frustration of temporary solutions and are seeking lasting change.”

Five Reasons You Need a Massage

1 2 3

Story & Photography Provided by Healing Hands Natural Therapy Spa

STRESS REDUCTION

Massage therapy aids in lowering stress hormones like cortisol, while increasing the production of endorphins, promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety.

20 | February 2024 | TownePost.com

PAIN RELIEF

It can alleviate chronic pain conditions by easing muscle tension, improving blood flow and releasing trigger points, leading to decreased discomfort and improved mobility.

IMPROVED CIRCULATION

Massage enhances blood circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues, aiding in better healing, and flushing out metabolic waste products from the body.

4

ENHANCED IMMUNITY Regular massage sessions have been linked to bolstering the immune system by increasing the activity level of natural killer cells and lymphocytes.

Massages involve many modalities, with Swedish/relaxation and therapeutic massages being the most popular. True Swedish massage incorporates actions like percussion, kneading, vibration, tapping, rolling and sometimes range-of-motion exercises. Relaxation massages may include those same movements, but their primary goal is to use light to firm strokes to relax the client. Therapeutic massage is a more targeted massage that focuses on addressing actual muscle and joint issues that the client or referring partner (usually a doctor) has concerns about. The massage therapist will

5

use modalities of their choosing to achieve the desired results. More than one massage session is recommended for the best results, and massage therapists will work with the client to create a plan to optimize results and/or maintenance. This massage can be full body or just targeted areas - the client and massage therapist create a plan together. Deep-tissue massage is often requested, but unfortunately most people think they want what they see on TV or social media. The most preconceived idea is that a big, burly massage therapist will crank and compress the client’s muscles to oblivion - some have even asked for that! However,

MENTAL WELLNESS It contributes to improved mental health by reducing depressive symptoms, enhancing sleep quality, and fostering an overall sense of well-being and relaxation.

not everyone should receive deep-tissue massage until they have talked with their massage therapist first. A deep-tissue massage will generally work on the more obscure muscles and connective tissue in a specific area. Deep-tissue massage is used to treat musculoskeletal issues such as strains and sports injuries. It involves applying sustained pressure using slow, deep strokes to target the inner layers of muscles and connective tissues. This helps to break up scar tissue that forms following an injury, and reduce tension in muscle and tissue. Contact Healing Hands Natural Therapy Spa at 765-450-4602 for more information.
