HEALTH CARE HEROES: SALUTING LOCAL HEALTH CARE WORKERS ON THE FRONTLINES FIGHTING COVID-19
We are grateful to our hometown heroes in a way that perhaps we never have been in our lifetime because we know the blood, sweat and tears that these men and women have shed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic that has swept through our country, leaving confusion, uncertainly and blind fear in its wake. As schools, churches, restaurants, hair salons, gyms, movie theaters, shopping malls and other businesses shut down, those on the frontlines never stopped working. In fact, many put in overtime, both physically and mentally, to ensure the safety of their fellow man.

Owners Hannah and Aaron Barrick
Good Dog Wesson’s Canine Bakery Cooks Up Healthy Dog Treats Writer / Julie Yates Photographer / Heidi Pruitt
Dog lovers Hannah Barrick and her husband Aaron, are passionate about the health of their four “fur babies.” Their business, Wesson’s Canine Bakery, is dedicated to keeping their customer’s pets just as fit and vigorous. Although it began as the result of a sad event, it has brought joy, knowledge and
tasty treats to the area. In March 2015, Hannah’s beloved Yorkshire Terrier suddenly passed on. Just the week before, when she had been home from college on spring break, Sweetie seemed perfectly fine and healthy. Heartbroken, her mother asked the veterinarian to conduct a toxicology report. atKokomo.com / MAY 2020 / KOKOMO MAGAZINE / 7
“We found that the cause of her death was a chemical in one of the ingredients of a very well-known brand of dog treats. We had been giving treats to reward her for good behavior and just because we loved her. We never thought it would be bad,” Barrick says. A few months later, Barrick got another dog. This time it was a German Shepherd who she named Wesson. Because of what happened to Sweetie, Barrick began researching recipes for healthy dog treats. Avidly interested in the subject, she ended up earning a Canine Nutrition Certification from North Carolina State University. “I began baking homemade dog treats for Wesson,” she says. “The dogs of friends and other family members loved them. I kept giving them away. My mom said, ‘You know, you could make a business out of this’, so I did.”
In 2018, Barrick and her husband moved to Peru. She got in touch with the Office of Indiana State Chemist, located at Purdue University, to find out the requirements needed to get a license to sell pet treats. All ingredients in her products have to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In addition, labeling guidelines have to be followed. “A lot of people don’t realize it’s actually illegal to sell pet treats and be unlicensed,” Barrick says. “After I got the license, we started selling online from our website and going to several farmers markets. Last summer, we were at Kokomo, Fishers, Fort Wayne, Original Farmers Market at the Indianapolis City Market and even went as far south as Avon. As for orders placed on our website, we will ship anywhere. The farthest we have shipped to has been Australia. “We have five flavors of treats, but I hate to say the word “‘flavor’ since it sounds artificial and there is nothing artificial in them,” she adds. “We use organic ingredients and coconut flour to make them grain-free. The blueberries we use come from

Besides the delicacies mentioned above, Copaiba Cookies, which promote body system health, Chewy Cheddar Puffs and Breath Treats are offered. For special occasions, Pup Cakes are available as well as organic antlers for chewing. Visitors can also purchase t-shirts for humans with clever sayings such as, “It’s not hair, it’s corgi glitter” and fun bandannas for dogs. Articles on wellness tips are supplied and customers can also find information about Barrick’s pet wedding attendant services such as making sure a couple’s dog is taken care of during a reception. “We are committed and dedicated to the health, wellness and well being of dogs,” Barrick says. emember the days when the notion of shaking hands with a rock-n-roll star or rubbing elbows with an NBA player made your heart aflutter? Remember the way your children watched superhero movies with their eyes wide and their mouths agape as they sat, mesmerized, at the notion of being able to fly, deflect bullets and neutralize the bad guys? Remember the times you had a random encounter with an A-list Hollywood actress at an airport or a legendary musician while vacationing
10 / KOKOMO MAGAZINE / MAY 2020 / atKokomo.com
in an exotic location? We remember such encounters because we, as a society, have elevated Hollywood superstars, sports icons, music legends and fictitious comic book characters as heroes in our minds. It wasn’t until this spring when an insidious, highly contagious disease swiftly and jarringly upended our routines, our lives, our families and our world that our definition of “hero” was sharply redefined. Suddenly we looked to doctors, nurses, hospital staff,
first responders and emergency personnel with fresh eyes of gratitude and a renewed sense of awe as we recognized the grand and personal sacrifices they were making, daily, for the sake of their communities. We are grateful to our hometown heroes in a way that perhaps we never have been in our lifetime because we know the blood, sweat and tears that these men and women have shed in light of the COVID-19 pandemic that has swept through our country, leaving confusion, uncertainly, and blind fear in its wake. As schools, churches, restaurants, hair salons, gyms, movie theaters, shopping malls and other businesses shut down, those on the frontlines never stopped working. In fact, many put in overtime, both physically and mentally, to ensure the safety of their fellow man. This strange and surreal experience has brought many lessons, the greatest of which is that we have heroes living among us. And for that, we are all eternally grateful. Therefore, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank these beautiful people for their ceaseless sacrifice, unwavering commitment to serve and boundless love of humankind.

When every day brings a new series of harrowing headlines, it can be easy to slip into sadness or flounder in fear. But I assure you, there is a light at the end of the tunnel thanks to this army of men and women as they are the heartbeat of hope that now, always has, and always will work tirelessly to relieve pain, save lives and restore health.
These individuals dedicate their lives to helping us, as a society, live our best lives. Because as the saying goes, “When you have your health, you have everything. When you do not have your health, nothing else matters.” Thank you to all our health care heroes for what you do each day!

Larry Barnhart, owner of Backalley Brewing in Kokomo, says the local community has rallied around his business since he founded the home brew supply store five years ago inside of Kokomo Cycling & Fitness. “I’ve been around Kokomo for quite a while,” Barnhart says. “I’ve worked at Kokomo Cycling & Fitness since 1975. with these businesses. It’s really been great to work with two things I love beer and bicycles.” Barnhart’s wife Sue also operates Backalley Art, which offers original art and whimsical gifts, in the same location. “It’s a lot of fun to have three business in one place,” Barnhart says. “We do get a lot of calls from vendors and interested customers that tell us they think it’s cool we have all of these great businesses in one location. It’s unusual, but we love it. We also have a blacksmith, Mike Shult, who has worked here for 19 years. He makes a great bottle opener, among other things.” The idea for Backalley Brewing stemmed from a local club Barnhart has become familiar with. “I’m in the Howard County Homebrew Club, which promotes the art of craft beer brewing and was started about 13 years ago,” Barnhart says. “It’s a great club. We’re an educational group, and we help each other become better brewers. We were forced to change when we were told we couldn’t make any more bulk purchases as a club.”

“I had been toying with the idea of opening a home brew supply store for a while anyway, so I thought I should open a business and keep the club alive at the same time,” Barnhart says.

The Kokomo community has been supportive of the shop according to Barnhart, a Kokomo High School graduate. “It’s really been amazing how supportive the Kokomo people have been,” he says. “There was no advertising about the brewery when we opened, but there has been a lot of positive word of mouth. We have a lot of regulars.” Barnhart says the Kokomo Humane Society’s Ales for Tails fundraiser with Backalley has been a popular event. “We have a lot of live auctions and fun stuff,” Barnhart says of the event. “It’s very well received. We are scheduled to have another fundraiser with them on June 13.” Barnhart’s personal favorites include Kölsch beer, which is pale and highly attenuated, as well as saison beer, a pale ale that is highly carbonated, fruity, spicy and often conditioned. “Kölsch beer is a white ale that is fermented like a lager, and saison beer is delicious,” Barnhart says. DREEM Nutrition Founders Talk About Unique Products & Company History Writer / Jon Shoulders Photographer / Jim Hunt
Austin Rhodus and Greg Kruger of Russiaville-based DREEM Nutrition feel the timing has never been better to bring their line of hemp-based products to the local and national marketplace. “We’re hearing success stories from people who have integrated our products into their daily lifestyle,” says Rhodus, company president. “We’re trying to make something that can truly impact other humans, and that’s what drives us every day. We have our own lab and make our own custom formulations in-house.” Rhodus joined the U.S. military in 2007 after high school and served for five years. He began researching the cannabis industry after finishing active duty and became intrigued.

medicine and plant-based products,” he says. “I had some benefit from herbal products after getting out of the military when I had trouble sleeping. I was relying on CBD products and ended up incorporating melatonin to help me with sleep. That was what led me to turn my interest in these products into a business venture.” Rhodus initially launched DREEM in March 2015 and proceeded to lobby consistently at the Indiana statehouse toward reforming the state’s hemp laws. DREEM obtained a license to grow hemp last year, at which point the company leaders began officially manufacturing products at a 42,000-square-foot Russiaville facility. Kruger, who serves as chief operating officer, says the goal with DREEM is to create quality, hemp-based products to supplement the body’s endocannabinoid system. “Science shows that the body’s internal endocannabinoid system is responsible for balancing and creating homeostasis,” Kruger says. “It’s involved in things like inflammation and pain signaling. Our body makes cannabinoids, and there is a plant that makes what
we call phytocannabinoids - these substances from the cannabis plant interact with this system in our body. We’re seeing evidence that these cannabinoids can have a profound impact on things like inflammation and mood regulation.” Kruger says the DREEM staff makes approximately 70% of its products in-house, and the product line currently includes Relief & Recovery CBD Gel, Full Spectrum CBD Oil, Certified Organic Hemp Protein Powder, a CBD oil for pets and more. “Our Terpene Advantage Oil has been one of our best sellers, because when we started we really focused on a zero-THC product line,” says Kruger, who worked in the pharmaceutical industry for 18 years before co-founding DREEM. “The Terpene Advantage offers a CBD product that is enhanced with plant-based terpenes, which have been found to have pharmacologic effect.” DREEM launched its Relief & Recovery Gel last year, and it quickly became a top seller according to Kruger.
18 / KOKOMO MAGAZINE / MAY 2020 / atKokomo.com
“The whole goal with the topical gel was to make an amazing product without CBD in it, and then add CBD, because in our minds different cannabinoids are simply ingredients to enhance your products - they’re not the end-all, be-all, but when they’re combined appropriately, you can make your products better,” he says. Kruger adds that customers aged 18 to 80 have purchased DREEM products, and many customers try the company’s products out as potential relief for joint and muscle discomfort. “I think some of the older population are possibly tired of the side effects you can get from pharmaceuticals, and wanting to try something that doesn’t give side effects and is maybe more affordable,” Kruger says. The pet products DREEM offers are also geared toward potential joint and muscle relief, as well as mood regulation. “All animals have an endocannabinoid system, and our belief is that
any animal has the potential to benefit from phytocannabinoids and cannabis in general,” Kruger says. “Different animals may be more sensitive to different cannabinoids. We have found a lot of people use these types of products if their dogs have anxiety or stress issues, or hip dysplasia and hip issues.” Rhodus says his staff’s collective passion for the products DREEM offers sets the company apart as truly unique in the marketplace. “Innovative plant-based nutrition is what we are all passionate about,” he says. “What we’re trying to do is bring out products that have been around for thousands of years and are just now reemerging. It comes down to focusing on modernizing ancient nutrition that empowers human vitality. We go above and beyond in our product quality to make sure the consumer gets the highest-quality products in the market.” DREEM Nutrition is located at 310 South Union Street in Russiaville. Parenting During COVID-19 6 Essential Tips For Parents At Home With Kiddos Writer/ Abigail Hake Photography Provided
Most of us are finding an unlimited amount of time on our hands during these fairly uncertain times. While it can be a stressful time for many of us, especially parents, we will all get through it and have memories to last a lifetime. Let’s hope that these few survival tips can cut down on stress and also bring a few more smiles into your life while we all stay safe at home.
the walkways with some art. The best thing about chalk though is that it can go so many different directions…get creative! Draw up inspiring messages, create something giant that takes over entire driveways or cul-de-sacs, make up extra-large game boards, or even create art galleries! The possibilities are endless and remember, adults can have fun with chalk too. And, if you have a ton of chalk, share with your neighbors by leaving a piece on their doorstep and ask them to get in on the fun too!
3. Participate in a Challenge
1. Disney+ If you don’t have it, sign up now. It’s super affordable and gives you access to the entire Disney movie library, which you are going to need because the days are very, very long and screen time rules flew out the window weeks ago. Old movies are fun to share with your kids so maybe try to get them to sit down and watch Swiss Family Robinson (a personal fave yet I still can’t get my child to watch the whole thing) or hunker down and watch all the Star Wars one after another or have a Marvel movie marathon.
There are lots of social media and viral challenges out there and while I’m not a huge tech fan, the social aspect of it has given way to some really creative things happening. Maybe do a lip sync challenge video with your entire family, try the garage door challenge (if you are needing a drink and a great laugh), or participate in the plank or push up challenge. You can even come up with your own challenge if you are really feeling creative! Whatever you choose, make sure to nominate another family to try it after you do!
2. Chalk
4. One-on-One Time.
Time to start hoarding sidewalk chalk. As the weather begins to show more signs of spring, more people will be out walking soon and with limited paths available during this time, why not sass up
With us all having quite a few extra moments hanging at our homes these days, we are typically all up in each other’s business. But now is the time to make sure to carve out a little one-on-one time with
20 / KOKOMO MAGAZINE / MAY 2020 / atKokomo.com
your loved ones if you can. About 15 minutes here and there can go a long way. Spend it snuggling in the morning before rolling out of bed if you have early risers, playing a video game, or going on a walk. It’s also important to keep in mind that as adults you might need to find some alone time too. It feels like there are really no breaks during this crazy time, so no judgment if that is time spent hiding in the bathroom.
5. Talent Shows We all have hidden talents, like knowing the entire rap portion of TLC’s Waterfalls song or spinning a basketball on our finger for way longer than normal. Whatever your hidden talent, it’s time to let that cat out of the bag and show off your skills! Gather your immediate family and each share your talents one by one in the living room or make it a family challenge and invite other families and friends to participate in a virtual event! By utilizing the amazing social tools out there like FaceTime or Zoom, the possibilities are endless!
6. Wine Delivery You are gonna need it. Pick a local winery and you will probably be happily surprised to find out they are delivering during this
time! While I don’t encourage drinking in excess, the days can be really quite emotionally draining and a cocktail hour once a week (or every day - you choose) isn’t going to hurt anyone! There are also quite a few Mexican restaurants selling their non-alcoholic margarita mix on their takeout menus now too. Who doesn’t need a Margarita Monday (or Tuesday & Wednesday too)? It’s ok, we get it. After this, we’ll all be drinking Ina Garten style, and if you don’t know what this is referring to, Google it. Remember, this is a special time we’ve been given to slow down and reconnect. Make sure to take it all in. Stay in bed a little longer, try to read that book you’ve been meaning to finish or try a new recipe you’ve been meaning to make. Whatever you do, make sure to check in on friends and family, especially those who are stuck home during this time alone. Some of you were maybe meant for these moments, but for others, this is a real challenge. Thankfully, we are able to still stay connected with technology. Whatever you do to get through this time staying safe at home, cherish it. Remember this too shall pass.
Thank you for 8 years of support, Kokomo!
