Local Teacher Raising Money to Build All-Inclusive Playground Writer / Julie Yates Photography provided
As the physical education teacher for Western Primary School, Tricia Harlow knows how important recess is for young students. Not only does it offer a muchneeded break from sitting in a classroom, but it’s also a time for positive social interaction. However, for some children attending the school, having an outdoor recess is not an option. Harlow hopes to turn this situation around in the near future.
“I’ve been thinking about the possibility of building an adaptive, fenced-in playground space for handicapped and special education life skills students ever since they began being bussed to us through the Kokomo Area Special Education Cooperative (KASEC),” Harlow says. “Our current playground ascends downhill and goes from blacktop to gravel and then to a thickly mulched area that is impossible to push a wheelchair through. And while our space is safe for general education students, the equipment isn’t
accessible for the special needs kids.” Harlow presented her idea to Jenna Moree, principal of Western Primary School, in the fall of 2018. Bolstered by Moree’s receptiveness, she met with Western School Corporation Superintendent Randy McCracken, who was also positive. Wendi Campbell, KASEC director, has pledged her full support of the project. “Administration is definitely on board, but the school system does not have the funds for the playground,” Harlow says. “We

have to raise the total amount needed before we can break ground and start to build it.” So far about $72,000 has been raised through various fundraisers, but $120,000 is needed before the construction on the playground can begin. The community has responded by participating in events that range from paying to place flamingos in residents’ yards to student fundraisers where money raised was matched by a few area businesses. Funds have also come from individual donations. When asked what her wish list for equipment included, Harlow responds with enthusiasm, “Everything would be accessible with a ramp. Besides secure molded bucket swings, it would be wonderful to have the type of swings that face each other so a special needs child could be paired with a general education student. Equipment where an entire wheelchair could be placed on would be a must.” “Ultimately my goal is to create an area where regular classes could rotate having recess with the special needs students. Both would benefit from the interaction. Leadership skills could be developed. If we start on the playground, we can create bridges to other areas of life.”

First & Goal Football Coaching Legend George Gilbert Takes Over at Taylor High School
Writer / Matt Keating Photographer / Jim Hunt
To say George Gilbert, the new head football coach at Taylor High School, has a lot of experience coaching different sports and teams, would be an understatement. He has spent 40 years coaching, 36 of them as a head coach. Before he came to Taylor High School, he coached at TriCentral High School where he worked hard to build a successful football program. Before Gilbert arrived at TriCentral in 2009, the team’s record during their first 38 years was 81-288. The team
only had five winning seasons. Gilbert turned things around dramatically during his eight years as head coach with TriCentral. The team’s record with Gilbert coaching was 62-40. During his career, he has also coached at Wayne Trace High School in Ohio, Pioneer High School in Indiana, and Clinton Central High Schools in Indiana. According to the Indiana Football Hall of Fame, Gilbert has a total coaching record of 215 wins, 163 losses and four ties. He is currently 16th on the active coaching list, while 50th on the all-time coaching list.
He has had 20 winning seasons in his career, eight conference championships, and five sectional championships. He has won one Regional Championship, one Semi-State, and one State Championship [2013 Class A].
eventual state championship.
Gilbert also coached wrestling for 25 years, with 10 years as a head coach. He was also a track coach for 20 years.
“My job focused on direction and leadership,” Gilbert says. “I put together an outstanding coaching staff that was very talented, and gradually, the boys and community bought in. It was a collective success story of an outstanding administration and board of education. There were also parents that wanted to see TriCentral become better and an outstanding group of coaches who each had a vested interest
Gilbert was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 2017. Gilbert is also the author of the book, “Team of One, We Believe,” the story of the fiveyear struggle of the Tri-Central football program and its

in leadership. I directed the process but all the credit goes to the administration, community, coaches and players. Winning does not happen unless this process takes place.” Gilbert is ready for new challenges at Taylor High School. “I have never been a coach
to walk into an established program with lots of available money and a large group of student-athletes to coach,” Gilbert says. “Every school that I have been at has been a struggle early on. Taylor is no different, but like Tri-Central, I will not be in the building and that makes it even more difficult. The difficulty will be getting the boys and parents to buy into a different direction
and give me a chance.” Gilbert is ready to overcome those difficulties. “I have coached against Taylor, (as I had coached against TriCentral,) and there may be some clouded ideas as to who I am, and what I am about,” he says. “This can create more roadblocks in trying to get the program organized. So I will
10 / KOKOMO MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / KokomoMagazine.com
rely on those coming out to do what is necessary to build the program.” Gilbert adds that he “has never had a large number of boys leave football once they start in the program and usually our numbers will go up. I believe, if the boys give the program and coaching staff a chance, they will get better and become more competitive. I
have been fortunate to recruit an outstanding staff, with several coaches that have been with me for many years. Plus, I feel fortunate to have one coach stay on from the previous staff to give the staff the continuity to move in a positive direction.” When asked about his goals for the season, Gilbert says, “First, I have enough boys to play competitively. I do not believe it worthy of a coach to come into a school and offer false promises. Teams that I have coached usually get better throughout the season and that will be our objective. Taylor has one of the most outstanding football facilities in Class A football. The community has worked hard at creating an incredible venue, now the program needs to move in a positive direction.” Gilbert has already met the players. “I have met around 20 boys that have said they plan to play,” Gilbert says. “I hope so. I have seen five boys regularly during the summer. Those five boys I have worked with this summer have worked hard and have made great strides toward preparing for the season. Unfortunately, football is a sport where 11 play at one time, and I am hopeful the boys will show up for the start of football and we can begin the process. “We will be behind most of the schools we play, as we have not been able to put a team together this summer to begin learning our program offense and defense. If the boys show up and have good attendance, the program will develop. I just need boys to buy in and give us a chance.”

You Can Take Control Women often believe there is nothing they can do about their issues “down there,” such as pain with sex, severe menstrual cramping and difficulty controlling urinary or bowel function. In fact, these symptoms are often caused by a dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles and can be rehabilitated with pelvic floor therapy.
pelvis and spine are destabilized. This creates symptoms like sciatica, tailbone pain, prolapse and more. Pelvic floor dysfunction can also cause embarrassing and painful issues for women.
What Is the Pelvic Floor? The pelvic floor muscles are part of a biomechanical network of bone, nerves, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissues that reside at the base of the abdomen, in the female private parts, or “the down low.” The intimate and intricate structures of the pelvic floor provide the mechanism for important pelvic functions like sitting, using the toilet, giving birth and having sex. The pelvic floor provides support for the internal organs of the urinary, reproductive and gastrointestinal systems. It also provides stability for the spine. As a result, when the pelvic floor muscles are off balance, the
Pain With Sex One in five adult women currently experience pain with sex and three out of four women will experience pain with sex at some point in their life. Seeking care for sex can feel shameful or even taboo for some women. However, treating a pelvic dysfunction is a valid and appropriate solution to resuming a healthy and rewarding sex life. Gynecologists and urogynecologists both recognize pelvic floor therapy as a proven and effective treatment option for pain with sex. Severe Menstrual Cramping Nearly 85% of women report menstrual cramping. When cramps become severe, they can interfere with work, school and other daily responsibilities. One in four women report absenteeism due to menstrual cramping. Menstrual cramping is essentially caused
by muscular overactivity of the uterine wall, which can aggravate hypertonic pelvic floor muscles and cause muscle spasms. Women will often experience the symptoms of menstrual cramps during sex, exercise or after eating certain foods, even when they are not menstruating.
Leaky Bladder and Bowels Currently, one in five women wear diapers and the adult diaper industry is on pace to outgrow the baby diaper industry. Stereotypically we think of bowel and bladder dysfunctions as an age issue, but 65% of female athletes experience accidental bladder leakage as do 30% of postpartum women. It is also estimated that 15% of women experience accidental bowel leakage or smearing. A popular misconception is that bowel and bladder dysfunctions can be cured with “Kegel” exercises. Exercising an injured muscle can make issues worse so when bowel or bladder issues are caused by an injured or overstimulated pelvic floor muscle, the Kegel exercises can cause further injury and worsen

or Kokomo native Amanda Lewton, opening Tin Man Brewing Co. downtown nearly three years ago was, figuratively speaking, a bit like coming home. Lewton’s family has been in the brewing business for four generations now, starting with her great-grandfather who founded a distribution business that was subsequently operated by her grandpa and then her father. “It’s so funny, even my husband is in the beer business, and originally I thought, ‘Okay, enough, I’m going in a completely different direction,’” Lewton says. “I got a degree in elementary education and really didn’t think at the time I would someday be involved with brewing.” As it turns out, however, Lewton was destined to immerse herself in the industry

where I wanted to find a new challenge for myself and focus in. It was a no-brainer.”
She says Mayor Greg Goodnight, while researching various types of businesses to attract to the greater Kokomo area, determined that opening a new brewery in town would complement the existing restaurants and shops throughout the city. Goodnight reached out to Lewton’s father to help find the right fit, and she knew the timing was right to get involved.
Nick and Sara Davidson, co-founders of the original Tin Man Brewing Co. Evansville location, had been considering an expansion into the northern Indiana market, and Lewton offered to forge a partnership and take the reins in opening a brand new brewery and taproom.
“Mayor Goodnight has put a big focus on how to keep people in the city and living in our Kokomo community and what people are looking for as far as things to do,” Lewton says. “Breweries kept coming up again and again, and when he contacted my father I knew it was perfect timing. I was at a point in my life
Soon the logistical pieces came together. The City of Kokomo had purchased the historic downtown train depot building and officials were searching diligently to find a fitting brewery tenant. By December of 2016, Lewton had officially taken over one of the depot spaces and began building out her brewery and taproom four months later. “It’s a beautiful, historic location, and with the restaurant they already had in the other

space there and a community room upstairs, having our brewery on the back end is perfect,” Lewton says. Now in her third year of operation, Lewton and her head brewer, Jack Sramek, who previously worked at the Tin Man Evansville location, offer several core brew selections year-round in addition to specialty, limited-run flavors.

“I initially tried to replicate the success with some of the beers we did in Evansville, although we’ve gotten away from that at this point and are doing different one-offs and interesting new beers we’ve never tried before,” says Sramek, who worked at Two Brothers Brewing Company in Chicago before joining Tin Man in Evansville back in 2015. Tin Man’s 24 tap lines typically include around 20 in-house selections along with a few guest taps. Sramek says his Overloaded Double IPA and Mango Malfunction IPA have both become favorites among patrons, and a few of his specialty selections like the Partner in Wine, a dry ale made with wine must at a high fermentation temperature, have also become popular. Sramek brews one to two times per week using a five-barrel system, totaling about 155 gallons per batch of beer. Tin Man’s brews are available for carry-out in 64-ounce growlers or 32-ounce grumblers as well.

“We’ve been able to put out about five to 10 barrels per week,” Sramek says. “Our target is to hit 500 barrels per year. We just started doing a Blood Orange Wheat, which has been very popular. We plan for that one, our Hibiscus Petal Pucker sour ale and a couple others to be year-round.” Despite being a brewery at its core, Tin Man is an all-ages, family-friendly facility where patrons can bring in their own food — a feature that Lewton feels has helped to promote local restaurants. “Because we only do beer and drinks, we can bring people in and then they can support the local pizza guy, and the steakhouses and Mexican restaurants and things like that,” she says. “We’re a great place for a couple or a family
to go because we’re not a bar or a restaurant. You can bring the kids on Friday night then come back Saturday with your spouse.” Since opening, Lewton and her staff of seven, including Sramek and her seasonal summer help, have hosted birthday parties (human and dog alike), graduations and even high school prom photo sessions. “Our goal has been to give people a place to go as a family — we have board games and pets are welcome,” Lewton says. “We do a lot of family and community events. We’ve partnered with IU-Kokomo and they have a program that’s been integrated into their coursework where students design glasses that we sell.” The original Evansville location has shut down operations, leaving Lewton with the

only operating Tin Man Brewing facility. When it comes to the possibility of opening additional locations, whether in Kokomo or elsewhere, Lewton says she’s not opposed to the idea, but for the time being she remains focused on continuing to improve her current facility. “I would love to grow and add locations, but my passion is to keep fine-tuning this one,” she says. “We’re in year three and we have a solid core group of people, and I think it’s important to continue the great foundation we’ve built here.” Tin Man Brewing Co. is located at 500 North Buckeye Street in Kokomo. in a new partner,” Deputy Underwood says. “He was small, fast, sociable and his detection work for narcotics was phenomenal.”
Since he was young, Deputy Joe Underwood has always had the dream of being a K-9 handler. Three years ago, Underwood began working as a decoy for the other county K-9 officers, which served as a crucial role for training them properly. Underwood has been a part of the Howard County Sheriff ’s Office for the past six years. Underwood is on the afternoon shift with “The Team” and is also a member of the SWAT and Dive team. When the department posted the opening for a K-9 handler, Underwood saw it as a way to pursue his dream and applied for it —which he was then graciously chosen. Soon after, Underwood went to Vohne Liche Kennels, which is one of the largest police-dog training facilities in the country, located in Denver, Indiana, and choose his new K-9 partner. Amongst eight other K-9s to choose from, Underwood picked year-and-ahalf-old Fero, a German Shepherd that was born in Hungary. Fero has spent the majority of his life at Vohne Liche, learning how to locate drugs and use his sense of smell to track people. “Fero had everything I was looking for 20 / KOKOMO MAGAZINE / SEPTEMBER 2019 / KokomoMagazine.com
After Fero was purchased, Underwood and Fero then had to attend a six-week course at Vohne Liche. The course was designed to teach Underwood how to work with Fero since he was already trained. Within the course, the classes consisted of narcotics detection, bite work, tracking and obedience. At the end of the six weeks, Underwood and Fero had to pass many tests and scenarios to become certified to work the road.
Available to anyone in Howard and Tipton counties
The duo has only worked six days on patrol since they became certified to work, but since then Fero has changed Underwood’s time on the force and their future experiences together. “He has changed my time on the force by being a department tool that I’m responsible for every day,” Deputy Underwood says. “If I’m on duty or off duty I still have to take care of Fero. We train in some way every day and that won’t stop his whole career for the Sheriff ’s Department.” Underwood says that the potential for Fero is endless. It is up to Fero and Underwood to continue their training to help keep the officers and citizens of Howard County safer. The only obstacles they face is to continue their current training and applying them to real-life scenarios. Fero will then accompany Storm, who is a bomb-sniffing K-9 and will be a good tool for the Howard County Sheriff ’s office to utilize.

7 Reasons To Get Excited For Football Season Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
ootball season is right around the corner and while you may or may not be a diehard fan, lots of people are ready for the season to get started, not only because of the game but because of all that goes along with it! Many Americans would suggest that football is the best sport in the world. Here are seven reasons why fans and non-fans alike are ready for the season to start again.
F
1. Togetherness: No matter what you think, football brings us together. At all levels of the game, people come together to cheer or boo. You bond with those sitting next to you in the bleachers or standing next to you on the field. You root for your team and hope for a win together with all the rest of the fans around you. You watch together with your family and friends in the comfort of your own home. It’s a common bond between you and those on your favorite team. 2. Rivalries Don’t say you like all teams because that’s not true, and you know it. We all know there are teams that just don’t get along and don’t like each other. Like the Packers and Bears, the Cowboys and Eagles, and obviously the Colts and the Patriots. Rivalries bring out the best in athletes and encourage competition, but the most intense rivalries are amongst the National Football League teams. And a good rivalry is not only exciting, but great for ratings!
3. Food Football food is just the best. Dips, pretzels, burgers, nachos, beer. What more could you ask for? The best part of watching a game is lingering around the kitchen island or visiting the concessions during halftime at the stadium. And did you know that more food is consumed on Super Bowl Sunday than at Thanksgiving? 4. Tailgating When you go to a game, high school, college, or NFL, you don’t show up right at gametime. Like any good fan, you arrive a little early and with a cooler! Hanging outside the venue with friends for hours before the big game is a must-have experience and can be extra special if you are visiting somewhere like Lambeau Field or Notre Dame Stadium. No matter the weather, tailgating is all about having fun and indulging in unhealthy food, drinks and games. Oh, and you might even make friends with those on the other side! 5. Traditions Football is a tradition most enjoyed on Friday nights while growing up and Sundays with family. If you love the NFL, it’s very likely that you grew up watching with relatives who followed a favorite team or just the sport in general. I mean, what do you think of when Thanksgiving comes around? That’s right, food and football. Families across the country go out to play America’s favorite sport on the front lawns and when they are done, everyone heads back inside to watch the game. It’s almost religious.
6. Fantasy Football The return of the NFL also means that fantasy football is upon us. Not only is it a hobby for many, it’s a multi-million dollar industry that paved the way for all other fantasy sports. People can compete with friends by picking and following their favorite players to create their fantasy team. It requires a little savvy and strategy, but is fun to follow and also to try to one-up your friends! 7. The Super Bowl Even those who don’t like football love the Super Bowl. Considered a national holiday by many, this is a spectacle enjoyed by all. The rivalries are fierce, the stadiums are packed, the half-time shows are unreal, and obviously the commercials are amazing. The Super Bowl is the culmination of the entire season and watchers everywhere stay up late and call in sick the next day just to enjoy the entire show. In the end, when fall rolls around, we are totally ready for Fridays to be spent at the local game, Saturdays to be taken over by the best college games, and Sundays to be taken over by pregame shows and commentators. We all feel better when football is back in action and we can enjoy the season for all the right reasons, with family, friends and even those who are cheering for the other side.

Grissom Air & Space Expo Returns September 7-8
KokomoMagazine.com / SEPTEMBER 2019 / KOKOMO MAGAZINE / 25
Writer / Jon Shoulders Photography provided
For the first time in more than 15 years, Grissom Air Reserve Base is inviting the public to experience military aerial demonstrations. It will feature the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and the Golden Knights, which is the U.S. Army Parachute Team. On September 7 and 8, all ages can visit the base for the 2019 Grissom Air and Space Expo, which, in addition to the air show, will feature aircraft displays, live music, and food. There will also be a kid’s zone arranged inside one of the base hangars with STEM-related activities, a beer garden and more. Admission and parking are free and open to the public. Doug Hays, Grissom’s public affairs director, says the base expects around 45,000 attendees per day if the weather cooperates.
“It’s going to be highly interactive because we want people to come out and talk to us,” Hays says. “We’ll have our aircrew members out by each of the display aircraft to answer questions and take photos. It’s also a good recruiting tool, and we want to show the different opportunities that the Air Force Reserve offers, hoping people take advantage of them.” The show by the Thunderbirds, the U.S. Air Force’s premier aerial demonstration team, is comprised of eight F-16 jets, with six flying at once in a variety of formations, and two jets demonstrating solo maneuvers. The team pilots will be available to answer questions and sign autographs after the demonstrations. “Depending on the weather they can do a high show, a low show or a flat show - usually you’ll see a lot of formation with what they call fingertip formation,” Lieutenant Colonel Brian Thompson says, project director for the Expo. “The two solos do stuff that’s more tactical in nature, with slow flying at high angles of attack, and some fast passes at right around the sound barrier.” The air show will occur on both days of the Expo, weather permitting. The Air Force band, Roots in Blue, an eight-piece act that plays a range of rock, blues and pop material, will also perform on both days. Hays first filed the proper paperwork with the U.S. Air Force to make a show happen at Grissom back in June
Good
credit is critical
when it comes to getting the best loan rate and term. Keep these Sec Fed Tips in mind during your loan process!
1. Maintain your current job status. A change in employment may adversely affect loan approval. Tell your lender of any changes you are contemplating making. 2. Stay current on existing accounts. Even just one 30-day late notice can cost you.
3. Keep credit card usage below 30% of its limit. The lower the balance you carry, the higher the likelihood of getting a better rate on a loan.

2018, and he says the lengthy hiatus might have actually helped to secure the Thunderbirds. “I think because it had been so long since we had done an air show, they were anxious to come back to our base,” he says. “We’re excited to have them.” Aircraft on display at the event will include helicopters, a T-38 twin-jet supersonic jet trainer, an AC-130 gunship, an F-35 fighter jet, and more. Hays says multiple factors played into the 15-year delay for air shows at Grissom. “We’ve really been at war since 2001 with a lot of mobility deployments and high operations tempo — that stuff is a lot of work, with people deployed routinely and the rapid changeover that we’ve had,” he says. “We tried to do a show back in 2010 but we couldn’t get a big-name act like the Thunderbirds or the Blue Angels, so we decided to pull it.” Hays adds that Grissom officials are hopeful the event will serve as a boost to the local economy. “We’ll certainly be getting a lot of people attending from out of town, and we know that Kokomo is getting hotels booked up,” he says. “We also consider this a big community relations event. We want people to know that we’re here, what we’re all about, and what their tax dollars are spent on.” For additional information on the 2019 Grissom Air and Space Expo, including details on display aircraft, directions and more, explore grissom.afrc.af.mil/ Grissom-Air-Space-Expo/. The Expo will run from 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. on September 7 and 8, with air shows beginning in the late morning on both days at approximately 11 a.m., weather permitting. The event is free to the public, with free parking available (carpooling is highly encouraged as parking will be limited). KokomoMagazine.com / SEPTEMBER 2019 / KOKOMO MAGAZINE / 27
