When Cara Starns chose to attend a session on child victims of human trafficking during a regional conference last year, she had no idea it would alter the course of her life. “It just so happens that I was sitting next to a child trafficking detective from the state during the session,” Starns says. When the presenter revealed that Kentucky had no shelter specifically and solely designed to serve sexually exploited and trafficked children, Starns says, “the detective elbowed me and said, ‘Did you hear that?’” Even though human trafficking had been at the center of her career from the very beginning, Starns, who had recently returned home to Kentucky to develop a Refuge for Women site in Louisville, was shocked to hear that no shelters existed
in Kentucky for trafficked children — especially since the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services reports that there have been 787 reported incidents of child sex trafficking in Kentucky since 2013, involving 949 alleged victims. Still, Starns says, “my first reaction was, ‘What does this have to do with me?’” As far as she was concerned, her work had not changed. It was still to open a Refuge for Women site in Louisville. Before long, however, that elbow nudge from the detective turned into an internal nudge Starns couldn’t ignore. She spent six months conducting research on what it would take for Refuge for Women to open a children’s shelter in Kentucky. Her conclusion was clear, if not disappointing. “I determined that a shelter for sexually exploited and trafficked children would have to be its own thing,” Starns says. “Refuge for Women couldn’t do it.”
When Starns presented her research findings to the national board of Refuge for Women, she thought it was the end of the matter, an inquiry she would ultimately put behind her. Instead, “they told me that if I wanted to take it on, they would support me,” she says. This was the second nudge, which was quickly followed by a third. “A family foundation called and told us they would provide seed funding if we decided to move ahead with the project,” Starns says. Despite all these nudges, Starns knew she was up against tough odds. Several other groups had tried to open shelters for sexually exploited and trafficked children in the past, and each attempt had failed. She had no reason to believe her efforts would be any different than previous ones. Starns decided to continue moving forward, however, and others soon decided to join her.

What started as one woman’s research project quickly developed into a nonprofit organization called Safe Passage, whose mission is “working to open Kentucky’s first shelter for sexually trafficked and exploited children.” In addition to Starns, who serves as the organization’s Founder and President, Safe Passage is led by a seven-member board of directors, one of whom is a survivor of childhood exploitation. “They’ve partnered with me in our absolute hardest stage,” Starns says, “building from absolutely nothing.” Even though Safe Passage is less than a year old, they have already raised more than $150,000 toward their fundraising goal of $200,000 this year. While Starns is proud of this accomplishment, she knows they have a long way to go toward sustainability.
Financial Life Planning Centered on You!
“The shelter will cost half a million dollars each year to run,” she says. She hopes to be able to open the shelter by 2021. Safe Passage will not be eligible for government funding until after the shelter has opened, so the organization is currently focused on raising support from monthly donors and foundations. When it is open, the shelter will provide holistic aftercare to child victims of sexual exploitation and trafficking. The residential program will be geared toward girls aged 1217 and will last up to 12 months. Comprehensive, evidence-based and trauma-informed services will be provided in an environment designed to encourage residents to rebuild safety, trust and community. Outpatient services, such as therapy, classes and case-management, will be available to victims who have a safe place to return. Trafficked boys will also be eligible for outpatient services, and caregivers of trafficked children

will be able to receive support services that will equip them to partner with the child in their recovery. The fact that the shelter won’t open for a couple more years hasn’t kept Safe Passage from finding other ways to address child sex trafficking in the meantime. Safe Passage currently offers a youth prevention program for students across the state called “Raise the Standard.” The program, which was founded under Refuge for Women, has two main sessions: sexual abuse and human trafficking.
before they turn 18, meaning that in any given session, presenters are likely speaking to several children who have been abused themselves.
“We do both because all of our human trafficking victims have been sexually abused before,” she says. “The sexual abuse session is heavy because it’s not just preventative, it’s an intervention.”
The human trafficking session, by contrast, is more preventative. “Most of the time, if people are trafficked, they’ve already left school,” Starns says.
According to the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, one in four girls and one in six boys will be sexually abused Safe Passage is working on developing
a training for foster parents on how to recognize the signs of child sex trafficking and how to intervene. According to the Safe Passage website, “94% of [victims of sex trafficking] already have a history with child welfare.” Starns hopes to begin offering the training as soon as next year. Starns knows that the level of comprehensive prevention and support Safe Passage will offer is needed now more than ever.

“Trafficking children has never been easier,” she says. “Traffickers pull up their phone and get on Instagram or Snapchat, message 100 kids, and are just looking for one to respond. It’s never been easier with social media. After several months of grooming, a child ends up leaving their house of their own will.” Despite the somber urgency of her work, Starns is quick to point out the importance of maintaining hope in the midst of it all.
HOW YOU CAN HELP CHILD VICTIMS OF SEX TRAFFICKING
“We do everything through the lens of hope,” she says. “We want the people we engage with to feel like they can change things — I can change my life, and I can change my community.”

LOVE YOUR PEOPLE
A CLOS E R LO OK AT HOPE S C ARVE S FOUNDER & PUBLIC SPE AKE R L ARA M ACGREGOR Writer / Christy Cates Photography Provided by Hope Scarves
“Love your people.” That was Lara MacGregor’s response when asked how she has been able to grow her nonprofit over the last eight years. When you meet her, she has a gracious intensity about her. She warmly defines loving her people as being vulnerable, showing up, and listening. She shares a lot about her life, but her narrative is honest, raw, and not another highlight reel. She doesn’t simply preach about loving her people — she embodies it. Having a conversation with Lara means that you are garnering her full attention. She is present, engaged, and her words are thoughtful and intentional. The entire concept of Hope Scarves is based on this level of thoughtfulness. Upon her breast cancer diagnosis in 2007, a friend of a friend gifted her a box of scarves with words of encouragement. That gift from a stranger is what sparked her to start Hope Scarves in her spare bedroom. Hope Scarves sends scarves and stories of
hope from cancer survivors to cancer patients. The concept is twofold, providing encouragement for someone who is facing cancer and creating a community where people can share their stories. Community and owning your story has been a primary point of healing and connection for many people. Hope Scarves grew out of Lara’s guest room into an office in St. Matthews, with over 1100 stories told and scarves sent to every state and to over 24 countries. In addition, Hope Scarves is also funding additional metastatic research that would otherwise not be possible. Metastatic cancer is a condition where the original tumor has spread to other parts of the body. Research is essential because survival rates are much lower in metastatic cases. Building this community has allowed Lara to share her story. Sharing her story and connecting with others is clearly her passion. When asked what drives her, Lara says “Connecting with people makes having metastatic cancer bearable. If I’m going to have cancer, get chemo, and have all the toxic side effects, at the very least, I want to bring meaning to this suffering. And bring comfort

to others going through something similar.” Lara’s original cancer went into remission for several years, then it came back. The diagnosis of metastatic cancer has forced her to redefine what hope means to her. Her message is no longer about her cancer journey, but how to live life over cancer. Teaching others how to be profoundly broken, while also being deeply whole, her message goes beyond cancer. It is about resiliency and intentionality. “Every time I tell my story, I feel so connected to people,” she says. “When something I say resonates with people, it makes me feel like I can do some good in this world.” This is exactly what she plans to do next. She is launching her new website LaraMacgregor.com, with the hope of sharing her story beyond the cancer community. This expansion will get her in front of a wider audience, to talk about living her life over cancer. She also desires to create multiple platforms to help other people tell their stories too. The endeavor is focused on storytelling, living intentionally, and empowering others. It has been her longtime dream to create a podcast that highlights other people who make this world a better place. Lara MacGregor is inspired to expand Hope Scarves through this new avenue of connection. Follow her on her journey at LaraMacGregor.com.

MICHAEL HIGDON, REALTOR 502-345-7698 michael@michaelhigdon.com WeMoveLouisville.com
Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
Michael Higdon has been in sales in one facet or another his entire life, having worked in corporate sales, telecommunications and audiovisual corporate business. In 2003, he transitioned into real estate and immediately took a shine to it, selling 30 houses in his first year. Though he utilized the same principals he had practiced throughout his career, he knew that selling homes was a “people business.” “I’m not afraid to ask a lot of questions and find out what a seller’s motivation is,” says Higdon, who has lived in Jeffersontown since 2001 and grew up in the Middletown area. “I like working with individuals to help them make a change in their life.” In the past seven years, he’s found a niche market that he really enjoys —working with probates, executors and administrators. Though a lot of realtors shy away from such sales, Higdon has the compassion necessary to make the process smooth and seamless. Having experienced grief in his own life, he offers clients genuine empathy.
“They’re overwhelmed and don’t understand the process,” he says. “They may not even live in this town.” Higdon gently advises next steps, which involves cleaning out the home, lining up contractors, and readying it for sale. Higdon recalls a time when he met with a client who was getting offers for his older home for $70,000 and $80,000. Higdon suggested that he pull back the tattered green shag carpeting and when he did, he discovered beautiful pine floors that hadn’t seen the light of day in five decades. The walls were also a dated shade so Higdon advised that the client spent $2,000 to rip up the carpeting, shine the floors, and paint the walls.
“It completely changed the look of the “I’m wearing a counselor hat, a contractor hat, and a Realtor hat,” Higdon says. “I have property,” Higdon says. to determine which hat I need to wear at any That’s not all that changed. It’s a great example of of their loved one’s property don’t know why Higdon loves his job. where to begin.
“I want to help you not only get the property ready for sale but also honor your loved one’s estate by maximizing your return for you and your siblings or any other heirs,” says Higdon, proud husband of morning radio DJ Kelly K. “She’s a rock star.” And Higdon is a rock star of real estate, having sold 150 estates in the last seven years. “I’ve had sellers tell me that they don’t know what they would have done without me there to help guide them along to get their house sold,” Higdon says. “I’m happy to do it. I’m on your side.” For more information, call 502-345-7698, email michael@ michaelhigdon. com, or visit www. WeMoveLouisville.com

TAKING THE STAGE THEATRE 502 DEBUTS NEW PLAY THROUGHOUT JANUARY Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photography Provided
Born and raised in Louisville, Diana Grisanti came from a large family who equally adored sports and theatre. In fact, Grisanti admits that she sometimes uses the word “halftime” instead of “intermission” and vice versa when speaking about theatre and sporting events. As a teenager, Grisanti attended Commonwealth Theatre Center in Louisville (formerly the Waldon Theatre).
Theatre of Louisville where she had the joy of meeting other playwrights. She also studied for two years in Mexico. While there she wrote a play called “Semantics” that got her into graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin. “Semantics” is about language, wealth, US paternalism and the limits of good intentions.
with Mike Brooks (the founder who stepped down in 2006), Grisanti and her husband took over as co-artistic directors in 2019.
“The program at UT Austin was sort of two programs in one,” Grisanti says. “As a writer, my colleagues were playwrights, poets and fiction writers. But then, on the theatre side of it, I was collaborating with designers, actors and directors. So I had multiple communities in one.”
Though Theatre 502 doesn’t have a dedicated space, they hold the majority of their performances in Baron’s Theater, an old magic theater located on Main Street.
“That’s where I found my people — other theatre nerds,” she says. Though she had fun acting and singing, deep down she knew she didn’t want to pursue performing as a career. Then she stumbled upon “the literary side of Following graduate school, Grisanti making theatre,” and knew immediately she returned to Louisville with her husband, had found her purpose in playwrighting. Steve, also a playwright. They began working as Playwrights-in-Residence with She studied dramaturgy and playwrighting Theatre 502, a small company that opened at the University of Iowa. After college, in 2011. Initially run by Amy Attaway and she completed an internship at the Actors Gil Reyes (co-artistic directors), along JANUARY 2020
“It’s been intense and amazing, nuts and awesome,” Grisanti says. “It was unexpected, but it felt like the right step for all of us.”
“It’s a strange little space that we’ve come to love,” says Grisanti, noting that 100 people can fit in the building though she prefers setting it up cabaret style with tables, which cuts seating in half. “Every show is sort of its own thing. You have to calibrate the space to the show,” says Grisanti, who is biased to the smaller theatres. “I like to feel connected to what’s there.”
Family-owned and operated since 1979, Scheller’s is your one stop fitness & bicycle retailer. Typically, they fill the house as the theatre has a good reputation in the city for doing polished work. Still, she says she’d love for word to spread and for everyone in Jefferson County and beyond to come see their shows. Historically, Theatre 502 has put on three shows per year on the main stage with sometimes a couple of smaller, less produced productions on the side. Grisanti, who calls this a rebuilding year, has shifted the model of theatre from traditional seasons to project-to-project. “Steve and I are interested in producing plays by other writers, but we also want to carve out a space if we want to write something new or create something with a group of people in the room,” Grisanti says. “Basically, we’re just trying to give ourselves maximum flexibility.” Next up is the play Grisanti wrote called “Lawbreakers: A Fast and Furious History of Women’s Suffrage” which opens in January and runs for four weeks. When she was commissioned to write it, she was excited but anxious because she wanted to get it right. She did a ton of research to ensure that the play featured not just those we always

“Gasping Whiteness” by Will MacAdams, which is a play, community workshop and anti-racist fundraiser. Plus, Grisanti and her spouse are collaborating with senior theater majors at Uof L to draft a play.
“I honestly don’t know how they had the time in their day to do all of these amazing things,” Grisanti says. Told through the perspective of two teenage black stepsisters who are seniors in high school, through magic they go back in time to learn about all of these black suffragists who were doing work in the 1800s and early 1900s. “Lawbreakers” is focused on women of color, specifically black women who were working against multiple injustices.
“We’ll do an invited reading and produce that play a year form this spring,” Grisanti says. “We have multiple irons in the fire.” When it comes to writing plays, Grisanti says that if she’s focused, she can complete a draft in two to three weeks. When her son, Victor, was born three years ago, it actually helped sharpen her concentration.
“It’s one of the trickiest plays I’ve ever written because so many young people are going to see it,” Grisanti adds. “At the end of the day, I want them to leave the theatre excited about voting.”
The topics of those plays vary, though there are themes that show up in a lot of her work. For instance, she’s intrigued by the notion of good intentions that don’t pan out. Plus, all of her work is feminist in nature.
Grisanti is also producing a show called

taking a moment to examine yourself and your own life. Theatre provides that opportunity,” Grisanti says.
She has taught every level, from PreK through college and adult. Currently, she’s teaching a playwriting class at the Commonwealth Theatre Center. She’s also teaching after-school drama programs at Looking for Lilith Theatre Company.
She notes that theatre is also communal.
“I’m constantly hustling on the teaching end because rarely can you make a living just writing plays. There are maybe five playwrights who do and the rest of us need a steady day job or a million side jobs to make ends meet.” Grisanti and her husband are passionate about theatre and the arts because it lets society take a pause from our real lives and consider what it means to be a person. “It makes us reflect on what our responsibility is to other people — just
“There’s something to be said for going into a room and everybody turning off their phones so that they may all participate in the same story. That so rarely happens,” Grisanti says. “With each play, you’re building a community in the rehearsal room and then you’re inviting more people into that community when you open the play.” And none of this even scratches the surface of all of the amazing life skills that theatre teaches — like how to work as a group and how to meet deadlines. “People in the business world are fools to not hire theatre people because we are really good at working under pressure,” Grisanti says.

REJUV MEDICAL 9204 Taylorsville Road Suite 206 Louisville, KY 502-785-7480 rejuvmedicalky.com
Dr. John Baird’s own health journey inspired him to open Rejuv Medical, where he helps hundreds of patients each year through functional medicine. The Fern Creek native earned his medical degree in 1992 and quickly became burnt out from the long hours he was working. “I was trying to figure out why I was feeling
so bad all the time,” says Dr. Baird, who took on moonlight shifts in the emergency room during his already stressful residency. “I was working with a physical trainer but gaining weight, and I was sore and tired all the time.” Dr. Baird met with a chiropractor who told him about adrenal fatigue and found that through lifestyle changes and integrative medicine concepts he began to feel better. JANUARY 2020
Functional medicine, which was started by Dr. Jeffrey Bland, Ph.D. about 20 years ago, looks at discovering the root cause of why a person is sick, instead of masking the symptoms with medications. Medical students are inundated with promotions and marketing by pharmaceutical companies throughout their educational experience, which Dr. Baird says leads to a heavy reliance on diagnosing and treating patients with medication.
holistic approach to medicine, he has been able to help patients regain better motor control, overcome intestinal issues and feel better overall.
“What they don’t teach medical students is what to do when medication doesn’t work,” Dr. Baird says. “Ninety percent of the issues we deal with in medicine are chronic, and we’ve made very little improvements over time. Functional medicine is just a different way of looking at things using specialized testing and improving lifestyles.” Dr. Baird works with clients on improving their diet and sleep habits, stress management and exercise and movements to improve overall health. He looks at the entire person and how they can deal with their emotional needs. “We treat the whole person,” says Dr. Baird, who has treated more than 10,000 patients using these principles. At Rejuv Medical, Dr. Baird helps patients with issues including peripheral neuropathy, obesity, thyroid disorders, infertility and PCOS and more. His services include hormone replacement therapy, testosterone replacement for men and even stem cell signaling. After Dr. Baird completed his residency and other training programs, he moved back to Louisville where he became the first doctor to have a full-time practice doing hormone replacement therapy.

Throughout his more than 25 years of medical experience, Dr. Baird has gained great experience working with those who suffer from chronic pain and who deal with crippling side effects of autoimmune disease on a daily basis. “We offer the most comprehensive hormone therapy in the area,” he says. “Louisville is still behind the curve in this area and remains one of the most obese cities in the U.S.” Patients at Rejuv Medical can opt to do Red Light Therapy, resulting in incredible spot reduction of excess fat in key trouble spots around the body. The technology was first discovered by NASA to treat astronauts coming back from space. They found that certain wavelengths of light gave energy to the body, almost like a grow light for plants. “In the process of studying this, they found that if you put the light over an area of the skin with a lot of fat, it pokes holes in the JANUARY 2020

BOWMAN FIELD TO CELEBRATE 100TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2020 Writer / Anna Kate Goshko Photography Provided
Historic Bowman Field, a Louisville icon and an aviation treasure, was established nearly 100 years ago. One of the longestrunning commercial airports in the United States, Bowman Field is situated on 426 acres with three buildings and is on the National Register of Historic Places. You might pass by this iconic landmark and not think much of it - there’s a dive bar and
a seemingly vacant building nearby. But this historic treasure has plenty of people striving to keep its history alive. During World War II Bowman Field served as one of the nation’s most prestigious training bases and as the nation’s busiest airport. It was also the Air Force’s school for flight surgeons, medical technicians and flight nurses. Today Bowman Field is no longer bustling with war-torn aircraft or soldiers JANUARY 2020
in training, and now serves a different purpose - sharing history. Between military and civilian involvement, it’s hard to find someone who has not been touched by Bowman Field. Since 2014 Bowman Field officials have hosted BowmanFest, a celebration of the iconic Louisville landmark. The event includes military and civilian aircraft exhibits, an airshow, plane rides, reenactments and live music.
Festival director Pat MacDonald developed the event in anticipation of Bowman’s 100th anniversary in 2020. At the festival, attendees can get a taste of what a soldier might encounter in years past. Military tents from previous wars, restored aircraft and live music all bring yesteryear back to life through hands-on experiences. Those that attendeding the festival each year in October might see future soldiers peering through the belly of a massive military helicopter, or testing their imagination while sitting in the cockpit of a personal aircraft. It’s all a part of a collective effort to keep Bowman Field’s history alive. “Word spread pretty quickly about the festival and a lot of people wanted to be involved,” MacDonald says. “There’s a community of airshows and festivals celebrated around the country. Those that are involved come and help us find the historic aircraft that are important to the history of the field.”

More than 30 military and civilian airplanes were shown at the previous festival, along with military re-enactors and encampments, historic military and aviation exhibits, vintage cars, motorcycles and military vehicles. The C-130 Hercules, one of the largest aircraft to ever land at Bowman, was also present with other aircraft flyovers and air show maneuvers.

Adults can also participate in Four Roses Bourbon tastings as well as educational sessions, craft beer and food trucks. MacDonald believes that in order to keep history alive for younger generations, experiences like BowmanFest are necessary. “It’s such a unique experience and we didn’t want the anniversary to pass without Bowman getting the recognition it deserves,” he says. Each year MacDonald and his team have slowly expanded the festival, incorporating a mix of both military and civilian aircraft. Feedback from the community fuels ideas for the following year, and people come from all over the state to experience the history of Bowman Field. “Since 9/11 the (security) fences have gotten taller, and there’s no longer a big push to get people on the field to experience the aircraft and aviation

5 TIPS TO HELP KEEP YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Writer / Abigail Hake Photography Provided
It’s that time of year again — the time when we all start thinking about what we’d like to do more of or be better at in the coming year. Did you know people have been setting New Year’s resolutions for more than 4,000 years! It’s assumed almost everyone has made a New Year’s resolution — and then broken it. It’s crazy,
I know, but if you think about it, even if you fail, it’s a great way to kick off a new year. A resolution is technically something we choose to do, or not to do, but here are a few tips for how you can choose to keep those resolutions in 2020. 1. MAKE A LIST Many people make lists on the daily. Whether it’s a to-do list or shopping list, JANUARY 2020
we like to see things we need to do and what we’ve completed. It’s a visual thing. Sometimes just having something written down on paper helps you stick to it. It also makes it more real. So write out your resolutions on paper or even better get fancy and frame them! But even without a frame, put it somewhere you’ll see it every day so you are reminded of what you resolved to do.
2. C HOOSE THE RIGHT RESOLUTIONS The top three resolutions most years are related to health and fitness, but does that work for you? It might, but it might not. Don’t feel like you have to pick a resolution based on what everyone else is doing or usually does. Be original. Stay true to you and choose a resolution that really matters to you. If you can really get behind something, you’ll have better success with accomplishing it!
Hanna Ankle and Foot
3. TRY MINI-GOALS Mini goals or mini resolutions are a great way to reach a big goal with baby steps! It alleviates the making of a larger, terrifying and daunting resolution and instead breaks it up to make it more manageable. Mini goals are easier and typically require less time. Try to set a smaller goal for each month and by the time you complete all 12 months, you’ll have achieved that giant goal you weren’t quite sure you could take on in January. Setting mini-goals will help you accomplish resolutions in a more incremental way and stay on track all year long!

4. HAVE A BUDDY Accountability is a huge part of forging through tough times and keeping our resolutions in the New Year. Doing it on your own can be hard. But you don’t have to do it all by yourself. Find a friend who has the same goals for the year or similar ones who can keep you motivated when times get tough. Even telling someone your resolutions can keep you accountable. They can ask you how things are going and understand when you need a little pick me up or break. It’s always more fun to do things with friends, and New Year’s resolutions are no different. 5. REWARD YOURSELF Everyone does better with a reward dangling in front of them. Rewards make us all feel good. Maybe if you are working on your food intake, you have a cheat

day if you can get through two weeks of staying on track. Perhaps if you resolved to journal every day, once you’ve done it for a month, treat yourself with a cool new pen! If you were trying to give up those coffee shop visits to save more money, treat yourself to one cup of coffee if you stuck to it for 15 days in a row! Once you’ve completed a resolution, no matter how big or small, rewards can continue to help us move towards our goals. It keeps us motivated and reminds us that we are doing a good job. No matter how it goes this coming year, just do your best. Do what works for you and if you need help sticking to something, make sure to ask for help. Just choosing to embrace change or taking on new challenges in the New Year is a huge step for a lot of people and we believe in you! Wishing you the best success in your resolutions and a wonderful 2020!

ROCKING OUT SCHOOL OF ROCK LOUISVILLE ENCOURAGES MUSIC LOVERS TO TAKE THE STAGE Writer / Christy Heitger-Ewing Photographer / JFHall Photography and JJHuff Photography
Melanie Scofield’s son, Carter, came to her when he was nine years old with a request. He wanted to learn to play guitar so Scofield enrolled him in a School of Rock camp in Chicago, an experience that served to be life-changing. “Carter fell in love with the program and has been involved in it ever since,” says Scofield, whose background is in public relations and marketing. The first School of Rock was launched in Philadelphia 25 years ago, then brought to major cities around the U.S. As the program’s popularity skyrocketed, it was organized into a franchise and grew in other markets. To date, 235 School of Rocks have opened in 10 different countries with a total of 35,000 kids enrolled around the world.
“I love to see music experiences available to all children because I’ve seen what it’s done for our son and many other children over the years,” Scofield says. In October 2018, the husband-and-wife team opened School of Rock Louisville. With so many talented musicians in the area, the pair didn’t have trouble finding passionate, qualified teachers. Currently, they have a total of 10 instructors who teach guitar, drums, bass guitar, piano, keyboard and vocals. For those who want to get started early, School of Rock offers Little Wing, a weekly group lesson for preschoolers. Rookies is also a weekly group lesson for 6- and 7-yearolds, designed to let young students explore various instruments. Most students enrolled in the program, however, participate in either Rock 101 (ages 8-13) or Performance (ages 8-18), School of Rock’s hallmark music program that combines a weekly private lesson with a weekly group rehearsal.
Being a huge music education arts advocate and lover of Louisville’s vibrant music scene, Some kids who first step foot inside School Scofield and her husband, Doug, knew the of Rock don’t have a clue how to play or city was ripe for a School of Rock.
know what they want to play. Others come in who have been playing with a school band or have been taking private lessons and are seeking that performance experience that School of Rock offers. One thing that seems to overlap all experiences is that when kids come to School of Rock, they quickly learn that they have found their tribe. What makes this program unique is that it takes a performance-based approach to teaching music so while students receive private lessons, as they advance in the program, they also have group band practices. This method not only fosters friendships but also lets kids experience the joy of performing on stage for an audience. Scofield maintains that when kids learn in this way, they tend to stick with it. “Sometimes when kids are only in lessons, they can hit a wall and get frustrated when something is difficult,” Scofield says. “This program keeps them energized and having fun so that they don’t get bored or frustrated. Plus, they tend to practice more because they’re working toward a goal of playing in a show.”
30 / MIDDLETOWN MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2020 / atMiddletown.com
Scofield maintains that working toward an end goal is so important — otherwise, taking lesson after lesson can become monotonous. “They feel like, ‘What’s the point?’” Scofield says. “It’s like doing batting practice over and over but never getting to play in a baseball game.” Socially, this program is great in this technological day and age with so much of society interacting virtually rather than directly. Music, however, speaks a universal language. “Kids have to put down their phones to connect musically,” Scofield adds. “Here, they’re developing meaningful relationships that can last a lifetime.” Scofield has been pleased with how the Louisville community has embraced the School of Rock. They currently have more than 100 students enrolled and

are still growing. Their adult program is popular as well. “Why should the kids have all the fun, right?” asks Scofield, though she recognizes that parenthood, careers and other responsibilities pose challenges for adults who wish to explore their musical passions. That’s why School of Rock rocks. “It’s hard for adults to find the time to schedule a rehearsal space or book a gig,” she says. “Here, all they have to do is show up, plug in and play. We do the rest.”
Scofield is thrilled to be in the heart of a city that offers such a wealth of musical opportunities for their students. Not only do students have the chance to play gigs in local establishments like the Blind Squirrel and Zanzabar, but for those students who crave additional performance time, they can audition for School of Rock’s House Band where they perform live shows at local rock venues throughout the year. Students who really love it may undergo a rigorous audition process to join the AllStar Show Team, a multi-city, country-wide music tour experience.
“Students have to be at a certain proficiency of playing and maturity to do those gigs,” says Scofield, noting the huge time commitment that comes with being an AllStar. “Not everybody wants to perform that much, but if this is their thing and they’re serious about pursuing music, they want to do it as much as possible.” To add depth to the program, Scofield periodically invites musicians to speak and perform. For instance, actors from “Million Dollar Quartet,” a musical about a recording of an impromptu jam session involving Elvis

Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash, came in, as did The Kukes, a ukulele band. In addition, last spring, Dallas Schoo, the guitar tech for U2, who is originally from Louisville, stopped by School of Rock to share what he does and show off his collection of 20 guitars. “He also showed the kids pictures of this huge computer tower he has to operate when he’s on stage,” Scofield says. “He’s like Oz behind the curtain, making the shows go smoothly.” Scofield calls it a phenomenal experience. “The guitar tech is a key member of any touring group, yet many people wouldn’t even know what that is,” Scofield says. “We’re always trying to bring these educational experiences to the kids so they can broaden their knowledge about careers in the music industry because, let’s be honest, unless they met Dallas Schoo, who would say, ‘I think I’ll become a guitar tech’?”
Everything they do at School of Rock circles back to the core of the program, which is a profound love of music. The more practice the students get with live performances, the more ease they feel on stage. For instance, Scofield shares how recently their family went to a jazz improv night where her son, Carter, felt right at home taking the stage and falling in with the other musicians. “He didn’t blink an eye because when he’s playing, he’s part of this community that speaks his language,” Scofield says. “That’s what we’re working towards with our kids. As they perform, they gain confidence and composure, eloquence even.”
She goes on to say that these experiences help them outside of the realm of music as well. Scofield has watched, time and again, shy students enter the program who are unsure if they want to get up in front of a crowd. Before long, however, they are on stage killing it. “We are building character, not just musicians,” she adds. His first book, “50 Abilities, Unlimited Possibilities,” covers his first 14 marathons toward his goal of 50, up to the Boston Marathon in 2013. His second book, covering the remaining marathons, came out this past July. The first book covers the team’s first marathon toward their goal in Jackson in January 2013, the Mississippi Blues Marathon. There are also marathons in Houston, Phoenix, Miami, Myrtle Beach,

Birmingham, New Orleans, Albany (Georgia), Little Rock, Los Angeles, Cape May (New Jersey), Knoxville, and Adeline (Kansas). Each chapter of the book describes one marathon and also includes “Behind The Scenes” stories of people that Erway and his friends meet. “I didn’t go to win but to complete each marathon and had so many great experiences I wouldn’t have had,” he says. “Having a series of goals gave drive to come back, asking what can I do, what else can I do, and wrote a book in the process.” The idea began as a way to bring awareness and to raise money for Team Reeve. Erway and his friend Grant Berthiaume had just completed the Oita, Japan marathon, considered the best event in the world for wheelchair racers, as there are only wheelchair racers and no runners, and thought “what next?”
Erway began competing in wheelchair racing in regionals and went to the world championships in Assen, Holland in 1990. His mentor Marty Ball, a member of the Wheelchair Sports Hall of Fame, recommended the Boston Marathon, considered the greatest race in the US, and he completed it three times. It remains special to him because he qualified for it the first time after he learned he had not qualified for Paralympics, and he wanted to give up racing. Ball suggested he try Boston first. There are marathon runners “50 state” clubs, but the group became the first wheelchair racers to do so. The team then came up with the goal of 50 marathons and began after two years of planning and finding sponsors. Another goal was to visit hospitals and rehab facilities in each city they traveled to, to raise awareness and encourage participation in wheelchair sports. They spoke at Touro Rehabilitation Center,

Next Step Fitness Center, and Patricia Neal Rehab Center, among others. Each marathon was unique in terms of travel arrangements, hotel issues, even logistics like making sure their racing chairs and everyday chairs were in order. Even going out to dinner became a challenge sometimes, as on one occasion a restaurant recommended by their hotel was not wheelchair accessible, due to the age of the building. One hotel that stated it was wheelchair accessible was not, and the bathroom door had to be taken off hinges to allow entry. Even the weather became an issue in some cities — in Houston, Roux suffered from In a least one race – Knoxville – they were hypothermia due to a cold rain, and had the first racing chairs to enter. Because of to be taken to the race’s medical tent for the hills there, only hand cycles (like a treatment. At that same event, Erway had recumbent bike) were used. They also met two flat tires on his racing chair. After that, two 6-year-old boys there and encouraged each team member carried two spare tires and CO2 cartridges. But they also met many them at entering the Kids Race. Both had

suffered spinal cord injuries before age three and became good friends. In Miami, the team was introduced to the owner of “Shake A Leg,” an adaptive sailing and kayaking program, so they were able to go sailing as well, and a group called Team Achilles helped with picking up race packets, special parking and pre-race food. Team Achilles helps individuals with disabilities participate in athletic events.

The team even met some notable friends — descendants of President Eisenhower in Kansas, the president of Saucony Shoes on a plane and a college friend of Christopher’s daughter Alexandra Reeve on a bus to a race. The team also took time to enjoy some great food and sightseeing, like fresh seafood in New Jersey and beignets at Café du Monde in New Orleans. Erway also recommends “Abilities Expo” a traveling exhibit with workshops and demos of wheelchair sports, which the group attended in LA. Of course, the Boston Marathon in 2013 ends up being an unforgettable experience for Erway. He left the race and took a cab to the airport right away. The gate attendant announced he was the first marathon finisher to board. Only after the plane landed did he learn there had been a bomb at the finish line. The experience left him saddened, but inspired by the “Boston Strong” resiliency of the city and its people, and determined to continue his races.
In addition to his busy marathon schedule, Erway also works as a marketing representative for Superior Van & Mobility in Jeffersontown. He has been with the company for more than 20 years. They have been very supportive of his “50 Abilities” goal, even helping sponsor hotel and food costs for the team in the five states where they have locations. He credits the company’s success to their giving nature: “The more people you can help, the more you’ll be blessed.”
Erway’s family has also been very supportive of his travels. He grew up in Pennsylvania as one of eight siblings. He came to Louisville for work and has a brother living in Lexington. His father is 90 years old, and he stated he gets his “perseverance” from him. He credited his wife Barbara also with looking after their “four-legged children” – six dogs – while he is away. Of his books, he says “I don’t think I am a great writer, but I have a story to tell.”
